Abstract Background Prenatal care provides pregnant women with repeated opportunities for prevention, screening and diagnosis that have no current extension to future fathers. It also contributes to women’s general better access to health. The goal of PARTAGE study was to evaluate the level and determinants of adherence to a prenatal prevention consultation dedicated to men. Methods Between January 2021 and April 2022, we conducted a monocentric interventional study in Montreuil hospital. We assessed the acceptance of a prenatal prevention consultation newly offered to every future father, through their pregnant partner’s prior consent to provide their contact details. Results Three thousand thirty-eight women provided contact information used to reach the fathers; effective contact was established with 2,516 men, of whom 1,333 (53%) came for prenatal prevention consultation. Seasonal precipitation estimation in ungauged mountainous areas is essential for understanding and modeling a physical variable of interest in many environmental applications (hydrology, ecology, and cryospheric studies). Precipitation lapse rates (PLRs), defined as the increasing or decreasing rate of precipitation amounts with the elevation, play a decisive role in high-altitude precipitation estimation. However, the documentation of PLR in mountainous regions remains weak even though their utilization in environmental applications is frequent. This article intends to assess the spatial variability and the spatial-scale dependence of seasonal PLRs in a varied and complex topographical region. At the regional scale (10 000 km2), seven different precipitation products are compared in their ability to reproduce the altitude dependence of the annual/seasonal precipitation of 1836 stations located in France. The convection-permitting regional climate model (CP-RCM) AROME is the best in this regard, despite severe precipitation overestimation in high altitudes. The fine resolution of AROME allows for a precise assessment of the influence of altitude on winter and summer precipitation on 23 massifs at the sub-regional scale (∼ 1000 km2) and 2748 small catchments (∼ 100 km2) through linear regressions. With AROME, PLRs are often higher in winter at the catchment scale. The variability in the PLR is higher in high-altitude regions such as the French Alps, with higher PLRs at the border than inside the massifs. This study emphasizes the interest of conducting a PLR investigation at a fine scale to reduce spatial heterogeneity in the seasonal precipitation–altitude relationships.

Improving energy efficiency in the building sector is a subject of significant interest, considering the environmental impact of buildings. Energy efficiency involves many aspects, such as occupant comfort, system monitoring and maintenance, data treatment, instrumentation… Physical modeling and calibration, or artificial intelligence, are often employed to explore these different subjects and, thus, to limit energy consumption in buildings. Even though these techniques are well-suited, they have one thing in common, i.e., the need for user cases. This is why we propose to share a part of the large volume of data collected on our modular education building. The building is located on Nanterreʼs CESI Engineering school campus and welcomes approximately 80 students daily. A network of more than 150 sensors and actuators allows monitoring of the physical behavior of the entire building, preserving optimal comfort and energy consumption. The dataset includes the indoor physical parameters and the operating conditions of each system to describe the physical behavior of the building during a year.

Hydrological modelling of small mountainous catchments is particularly challenging because of the high spatio-temporal resolution required for the meteorological forcings. In situ measurements of precipitation are typically scarce in these remote areas, particularly at high elevations. Precipitation reanalyses propose different alternative forcings for the simulation of streamflow using hydrological models. In this paper, we evaluate the performances of two hydrological models representing some of the key processes for small mountainous catchments (< 300 km2), using different meteorological products with a fine spatial and temporal resolution. The evaluation is performed on 55 small catchments of the northern French Alps. While the simulated streamflows are adequately reproduced for most of the configurations, these evaluations emphasize the added value of radar measurements, in particular for the reproduction of flood events. However, these better performances are only obtained because the hydrological models correct the underestimations of accumulated amounts (e.g. annual) from the radar data in high-elevation areas.

Abstract The effect of interpass temperature on the microstructure and pit nucleation behaviour in wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) deposited ER316L stainless steel is investigated. Lowering the interpass temperature increases the ferrite content and decreases the sigma phase precipitation. Potentiostatic pulse measurements show that the WAAM ER316L pits develop predominantly near sigma phases and have higher pit density compared to a wrought 316L (UNS S31600). The pitting susceptibility of WAAM ER316L increases with increasing interpass temperature due to the precipitation of larger sigma phase enhancing the elemental segregation.

Agroforestry is often seen as a sustainable land-use system for agricultural production providing ecosystem services. Intercropping with food crops leads to equal or higher productivity than monoculture and results in food production for industry and subsistence. Low rubber price and low labor productivity in smallholdings have led to a dramatic conversion of rubber plantations to more profitable crops. The literature analysis performed in this paper aimed at better understanding the ins and outs that could make rubber-based agroforestry more attractive for farmers. A comprehensive search of references was conducted in March 2023 using several international databases and search engines. A Zotero library was set up consisting of 415 scientific references. Each reference was carefully read and tagged in several categories: cropping system, country, main tree species, intercrop type, intercrop product, level of product use, discipline of the study, research topic, and intercrop species. Of the 232 journal articles, 141 studies were carried out on rubber agroforestry. Since 2011, the number of studies per year has increased. Studies on rubber-based agroforestry systems are performed in most rubber-producing countries, in particular in Indonesia, Thailand, China, and Brazil. These studies focus more or less equally on perennials (forest species and fruit trees), annual intercrops, and mixed plantations. Of the 47 annual crops associated with rubber in the literature, 20 studies dealt with rice, maize, banana, and cassava. Agronomy is the main discipline in the literature followed by socio-economy and then ecology. Only four papers are devoted to plant physiology and breeding. The Discussion Section has attempted to analyze the evolution of rubber agroforestry research, progress in the selection of food crop varieties adapted to agroforestry systems, and to draw some recommendations for rubber-based agroforestry systems associated with food crops.

Abstract Corrosion performance of a multi-layered ER316LSi wall deposited using wire and arc additive manufacturing was studied in the as-deposited condition and after stress relief heat treatment at 900 °C, in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. It was found that the heat treatment is not suitable for WAAM ER316LSi components due to the complete transformation of the delta ferrite into sigma decreasing the corrosion performance. The delta ferrite to sigma transformation during heat treatment was facilitated by the cyclic reheating of the part during deposition. The electrochemical response of as-deposited WAAM differed from a wrought alloy with similar composition and linked to microstructural differences: as-deposited WAAM had a higher pitting potential due to the absence of sulfide inclusions and increased metastable-like activity due to the presence of the secondary delta ferrite causing elemental segregation.

This study explores the stability of electrodeposited copper catalysts utilized in electrochemical CO2 reduction (ECR) across various amine media. The focus is on understanding the influence of different amine types, corrosion ramifications, and the efficacy of pulse ECR methodologies. Employing a suite of electrochemical techniques including potentiodynamic polarization, linear resistance polarization, cyclic voltammetry, and chronopotentiometry, the investigation reveals useful insights. The findings show that among the tested amines, CO2-rich monoethanolamine (MEA) exhibits the highest corrosion rate. However, in most cases, the rates remain within tolerable limits for ECR operations. Primary amines, notably monoethanolamine (MEA), show enhanced compatibility with ECR processes, attributable to their resistance against carbonate salt precipitation and sustained stability over extended durations. Conversely, tertiary amines such as methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) present challenges due to the formation of carbonate salts during ECR, impeding their effective utilization. This study highlights the effectiveness of pulse ECR strategies in stabilizing ECR. A noticeable shift in cathodic potential and reduced deposit formation on the catalyst surface through periodic oxidation underscores the efficacy of such strategies. These findings offer insights for optimizing ECR in amine media, thereby providing promising pathways for advancements in CO2 emission reduction technologies.

Land surface temperature (Ts) integrated in contextual evapotranspiration models can be used to derive the water stress level of forests. One difficulty of such models implemented over forests is related to the impact of trees casting shadows on the remotely sensed Ts, which potentially hide the water stress signature. Until now, there has been no method to correct for this effect at the spatial resolution of current (Landsat) thermal sensors. This study investigates the impact of the solar zenith angle as a proxy of trees casting shadows on the water deficit index (WDI), using Landsat-7 and Landsat-8 data over a 21-km2 area partially covered by a holm oak forest in South-eastern France, for 7 successive summers (2015 to 2021). Results are compared to in situ evaporative fraction (EF) measurements. First, a calibration of the correction of WDI for shadow effects correlates the WDI error (WDI minus 1-EF) with the solar zenith angle. The correction improves the correlation (R) and slope between WDI and 1-EF, from R=0.32 to R=0.62 and slope=0.21 to slope=0.63, for non-corrected and corrected WDI respectively. Second, a calibration of the correction method that does not rely on in situ measurements, evaluates the linear relationship between remotely sensed WDI and the solar zenith angle in dry conditions. The correction improves the correlation and slope between WDI and 1-EF, from R=0.32 to R=0.57 and slope=0.21 to slope=0.50, for non-corrected and corrected WDI respectively.

Haptophytes are an environmentally important phylum of eukaryotic phytoplankton, forming the second most abundant algal group after diatoms in recent estimates of ocean biodiversity. Haptophytes are phylogenetically and functionally diverse, including globally distributed and bloom-forming calcifying species such as Emiliania and Coccolithus, and non-calcifying orders that may form important components of phytoplankton communities in polar (Phaeocystis, Chrysochromulina) through to sub-tropical latitudes (Pavlova). In this review, we synthesize available phylogenetic, genomic and environmental information concerning the diversity of haptophyte life, considering the origins and placement on the eukaryotic tree; the diversity of the five major orders (Pavlovophyceae, Phaeocystales, Prymnesiales, the CSZ clade, and Isochrysidales); and the contrasting biogeographical distributions of haptophyte groups across different Tara Oceans sampling stations and size fractions. We additionally consider outstanding questions within the fields of haptophyte diversity and biology, particularly in the context of newly discovered and largely uncultured major groups (DPL lineages and Rappemonads), and current gaps in our knowledge of genomic content and niche adaptation across the haptophyte tree.

Zinc electrodeposition serves as a crucial electrochemical process widely employed in various industries, particularly in automotive manufacturing, owing to its cost effectiveness compared to traditional methods. However, traditional zinc electrodeposition using aqueous solutions faces challenges related to toxicity and hydrogen gas generation. Non-aqueous electrolytes such as ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have gained attention, with choline-chloride-based DESs showing promise despite raising environmental concerns. In this study, zinc electrodeposition on mild steel was investigated using three distinct electrolytes: (i) halide-free aqueous solutions, (ii) chloride-based DES, and (iii) halide-free acetate-based organic solutions. The study examined the influence of deposition time on the growth of Zn on mild steel substrates from these electrolytes using physical characterization techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicate that glycol + acetate-based non-aqueous organic solutions provide an eco-friendly alternative, exhibiting comparable efficiency, enhanced crystalline growth, and promising corrosion resistance. This research contributes valuable insights into the impact of electrolyte choice on zinc electrodeposition, offering a pathway towards more sustainable and efficient processes. Through a comprehensive comparison and analysis of these methods, it advances our understanding of the practical applications of zinc electrodeposition technology.

In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

Geothermal power is an attractive and environmentally friendly energy source known for its reliability and efficiency. Unlike some renewables like solar and wind, geothermal energy is available consistently, making it valuable for mitigating climate change. Heat exchangers play a crucial role in geothermal power plants, particularly in binary cycle plants, where they represent a significant portion of capital costs. Protecting these components from deterioration is essential for improving plant profitability. Corrosion is a common issue due to direct contact with geothermal fluid, which can lead to heat exchanger failure. Additionally, temperature changes within the heat exchanger can cause scaling, reduce heat transfer efficiency, or even block the tubes. This review critically examines the challenges posed by corrosion and scaling in geothermal heat exchangers, with a primary focus on three key mitigation strategies: the application of corrosion-resistant alloys, the utilization of protective coating systems, and the introduction of anti-scaling agents and corrosion inhibitors into the geothermal fluid. The paper discusses recent strides in these approaches, identifying promising advancements and highlighting impending obstacles. By bridging existing knowledge gaps, this review aims to offer valuable insights into material selection, heat exchanger design, and the progression of geothermal energy production. Ultimately, it contributes to the ongoing endeavor to harness geothermal energy as a sustainable and enduring solution to our energy needs.

Background: Worldwide coffee production, especially Arabica coffee, is threatened by climatic change, plants diseases and vulnerability of smallholders. Meanwhile, consumers’ demand for socially and environmentally sustainable products is steadily increasing, driving the engagement of stakeholders in agro-ecological and social initiatives. Here we present a new organizational model, the “Coffee agroforestry business-driven cluster” (CaFC), which aims at preserving ecosystems while offering producers a fair income. Based on an original local micro value-chain dedicated to sustainable production of high-quality Arabica coffee under agroforestry systems, the CaFC model stands out by addressing the issues around plantation renovation, a crucial process that requires considerable investments from producers. Methods: Based on a pilot project in Nicaragua, we illustrate how the operational principles of CaFC can be applied in a real setting. Using data shared by key stakeholders involved in the project, we assess the profitability of the CaFC model by comparing different scenarios and applying sensitivity analysis. We then reflect on the reproducibility of the model in other contexts, building on lessons learned from ongoing implementations in Vietnam and Cameroon. Results: For producers renovating their plantations, the CaFC model consistently outperforms other scenarios, offering high quality premiums coupled with capacity building, access to highly productive varieties that perform well under agroforestry systems and adapted credit with favourable repayment schemes. Implementation in Vietnam and Cameroon show that the model can be successfully replicated with some adaptation to local contexts. These cases also highlight the importance of mutual interests, trust and communication in enabling collaboration between stakeholders. Conclusions: The CaFC model has great potential for positive environmental and economic impact and offers strong incentives for stakeholders involved in its resulting micro value-chain. The concept was initially developed in Nicaragua for coffee but could also be adapted in other countries or even to other commodities such as cocoa.

The burden of the first year of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was greater for vulnerable populations, such as immigrants, people living in disadvantaged urban areas, and people with chronic illnesses whose usual follow-up may have been disrupted. Immigrants receiving care for HIV in Seine-Saint-Denis' hospitals have a combination of such vulnerabilities, while nonimmigrant people living with HIV (PLWHIV) have more heterogeneous vulnerability profiles. The ICOVIH study aimed to compare the socioeconomic effects of the COVID-19 crisis as well as attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccination among immigrant and nonimmigrant PLWHIV. A questionnaire assessed vulnerabilities prior to the COVID-19 epidemic and the impact of the early epidemic on administrative, residential, professional, and financial fields. We surveyed 296 adults living with HIV at four hospitals in Seine-Saint-Denis, the poorest metropolitan French department, between January and May 2021. Administrative barriers affected 9% of French-born versus 26.3% of immigrant participants. Immigrants experienced financial insecurity and hunger more often than nonimmigrant participants (21.8% versus 7.1% and 6.6% versus 3%, respectively). Spontaneous acceptance of vaccination was higher among nonimmigrant than among immigrant participants (56.7% versus 32.1%), while immigrants were more likely to wait for their doctor's recommendation or for their doctor to convince them than their French-born counterparts (34.2% versus 19.6%). The trust-based doctor‒patient relationship established through HIV follow-up appeared to be a determining factor in the high acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine among immigrant participants.

Abstract Interactions between farmers and agrobiodiversity are key drivers of agroecosystems sustainability and of the resilience of such systems to perturbations, but research into the human/nature interactions have overlooked some important aspects of agrobiodiversity management. In particular, farmers' ecological knowledge of the spatial organisation of plant diversity remains an open question, although knowledge and practices have major implications for the efficient and sustainable use of natural resources. Our study addresses this question by analysing how farmers spatially organise plant species in agroforests based on their knowledge of species interactions and interactions with the environment. The Analanjirofo region on the north‐east coast of Madagascar provides an interesting context to explore this issue in clove‐based agroforests, as these systems were developed by farmers as a sustainable alternative to the traditional system of shifting rice cultivation. Using an emic approach, that is based on the farmers' perspective, and participatory mapping, we studied plant diversity and its spatial organisation in 17 clove‐based agroforests and in 28 management sub‐units defined by farmers in a village of Vavatenina district. The plant functions and farmers' knowledge of plant interactions with clove tree were recorded in semi‐structured interviews, and the interactions were represented in a cognitive map. Farmers manage more than 50 plant species associated with diverse functions. Analysis of participatory maps identified four main types of species association as a function of the age of the clove trees and the associated plant diversity, and different spatial organisation patterns as a function of the topography and the surrounding species. Analysis of farmers' knowledge provided valuable insights into spatial organisation practices, how farmers perceive the adaptation of plant species to biophysical heterogeneity of the environment and whether they can be associated with other species. Our findings and methods pave the way for further interdisciplinary research on farmers/nature interactions to support the development of agrobiodiversity‐based systems taking into account farmer and scientific knowledge and practices, especially in the tropics where the expansion of cash crops in input‐intensive and mono‐cropping systems has driven major disruptions to smallholder agriculture.

Abstract Background The effect of cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation on the length of mechanical ventilation and mortality in immunocompetent ICU patients requiring invasive mechanical ventilation remains controversial. The main objective of this study was to determine whether preemptive intravenous ganciclovir increases the number of ventilator-free days in patients with CMV blood reactivation. Methods This double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial involved 19 ICUs in France. Seventy-six adults ≥ 18 years old who had been mechanically ventilated for at least 96 h, expected to remain on mechanical ventilation for ≥ 48 h, and exhibited reactivation of CMV in blood were enrolled between February 5th, 2014, and January 23rd, 2019. Participants were randomized to receive ganciclovir 5 mg/kg bid for 14 days (n = 39) or a matching placebo (n = 37). Results The primary endpoint was ventilator-free days from randomization to day 60. Prespecified secondary outcomes included day 60 mortality. The trial was stopped for futility based on the results of an interim analysis by the DSMB. The subdistribution hazard ratio for being alive and weaned from mechanical ventilation at day 60 for patients receiving ganciclovir (N = 39) compared with control patients (N = 37) was 1.14 (95% CI from 0.63 to 2.06; P = 0.66). The median [IQR] numbers of ventilator-free days for ganciclovir-treated patients and controls were 10 [0–51] and 0 [0–43] days, respectively (P = 0.46). Mortality at day 60 was 41% in patients in the ganciclovir group and 43% in the placebo group (P = .845). Creatinine levels and blood cells counts did not differ significantly between the two groups. Conclusions In patients mechanically ventilated for ≥ 96 h with CMV reactivation in blood, preemptive ganciclovir did not improve the outcome.

The study took place in southern Thailand, in Phatthalung province, and is part of “Heveadapt,” a Franco-Thai research project. The aim of this project was to show how smallholder rubber plantations can adapt and remain sustainable in the face of variable climatic conditions and deep changes in socio-economic context. Among the various types of cropping systems, agroforestry practices were identified as promising. Rubber agroforestry systems (AFS) are economically more productive than rubber monocrop plantations and give more flexibility to smallholders, in particular when rubber prices are low, which has been the case since 2013. However, adoption of AFS during the mature period of the plantations is very low in Thailand. The policy to boost rubber agroforestry practices still needs to be developed with all local stakeholders. The objectives of the study were to identify the possibilities and capacities to use current AFS dynamic networks as a basis to set up a rubber agroforestry innovation platform. The research team studied: i) farmers’ collective organizations, groups or networks with rubber AFS partially or entirely and ii) the social dynamic enabling the sharing of knowledge and know-how. An individual producer’s grid, with original farmers or strong knowledge with ease of sharing, was also studied. The role of local institutions involved in the promotion of rubber AFS was also analyzed. This allowed us to design an innovation platform and to define activities that suit the socio-economic context of Phatthalung province. The main aims of the platform are to promote cooperation among innovative producers and the transmission between them of knowledge and know-how about rubber AFS. This could an efficient tool that Thai rubber institutions could set up to encourage the adoption of rubber AFS by farmers.
