Personality traits, skills, competencies, and capabilities —also generally known as abilities—are terms widely used within the business domain in both the managerial and entrepreneurial contexts. Although the differences between entrepreneurial and managerial roles have been widely discussed among scholars, the literature still fails to identify the abilities that distinguish these roles. Moreover, new capabilities common to both fields have also recently emerged, related to both entrepreneurial and managerial roles, that are strictly connected to the rapid change and uncertain dynamics of the global economy. This research contributes to knowledge by disclosing this new group of capabilities, also known as dynamic capabilities. A bibliometric analysis has been conducted to examine the evolutionary intricacies of both entrepreneurial and managerial roles while shedding light on the specific skills creating these dynamic capabilities.

Abstract Cold-water coral (CWC) reefs of the Angolan margin (SE Atlantic) are dominated by Desmophyllum pertusum and support a diverse community of associated fauna, despite hypoxic conditions. In this study, we use carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses (δ13C and δ15N) to decipher the trophic network of this relatively unknown CWC province. Although fresh phytodetritus is available to the reef, δ15N signatures indicate that CWCs (12.90 ± 1.00 ‰) sit two trophic levels above Suspended Particulate Organic Matter (SPOM) (4.23 ± 1.64 ‰) suggesting that CWCs are highly reliant on an intermediate food source, which may be zooplankton. Echinoderms and the polychaete Eunice norvegica occupy the same trophic guild, with high δ13C signatures (-14.00 ± 1.08 ‰) pointing to a predatory feeding behavior on CWCs and sponges, although detrital feeding on 13C enriched particles might also be important for this group. Sponges presented the highest δ15N values (20.20 ± 1.87 ‰), which could be due to the role of the sponge holobiont and bacterial food in driving intense nitrogen cycling processes in sponges’ tissue, helping to cope with the hypoxic conditions of the reef. Our study provides first insights to understand trophic interactions of CWC reefs under low-oxygen conditions.

Background: To maximize the likelihood of positive outcome in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) survivors, potential benefits of treatment modalities have to be weighed against the possibilities of damage to normal tissues, such as the heart. High-quality data-driven evidence regarding appropriate risk stratification strategies is still scarce. The aim of this review is to summarize and appraise available prediction models for treatment-induced cardiac events in patients with NSCLC. Methods: A systematic search of MEDLINE was performed using a Boolean combination of appropriate truncation and indexing terms related to “NSCLC”, “prediction models”, “cardiac toxicity”, and “treatment modalities”. The following exclusion criteria were applied: sample-size of less than 100, no significant predictors in multivariate analysis, lack of model specifications, and case-mix studies. The generic inverse variance method was used to pool the summary effect estimate for each predictor. The quality of the papers was assessed using the Prediction model Risk Of Bias Assessment Tool. Results: Of the 3,056 papers retrieved, 28 prediction models were identified, including seven for (chemo-)radiotherapy, one for immunotherapy, and 20 for surgical resection. Forty-one distinct predictors were entered in the prediction models. The pooled effect estimate of the mean heart dose (HR = 1.06, 95%CI:1.04–1.08) and history of cardiovascular diseases (HR = 3.1, 95%CI:1.8–5.36) were shown to significantly increase the risk of developing late cardiac toxicity after (chemo-)radiotherapy. Summary estimates of age (OR = 1.17, 95%CI:1.06–1.29), male gender (OR = 1.61, 95%CI:1.4–1.85), and advanced stage (OR = 1.34, 95%CI:1.06–1.69) were significantly associated with higher risk of acute cardiac events after surgery. Risk of bias varied across studies, but analysis was the most concerning domain where none of the studies were judged to be low risk. Conclusion: This review highlights the need for a robust prediction model which can inform patients and clinicians about expected treatment-induced heart damage. Identified clues suggest incorporation of detailed cardiac metrics (substructures’ volumes and doses).

Coronavirus is an infectious disease that has left tens of millions of deaths around the world, and which has had social, economic, emotional, and psychological consequences. To mitigate the spread of the virus, several countries have adopted restrictive measures that impacted the way people experienced the end-of-life and the death of their loved one. This study aimed to identify the variables associated with prolonged grief symptoms in the context of both pandemic-related losses and the unique challenges related to end-of-life care. An anonymous online survey was disseminated widely through various channels including local press, social media, professional networks and hospitals. Socio-demographic information was collected, as well as information related to loss (cause of death, place of end-of-life care and death) and bereavement, and on the impact of the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. The participants were 163 bereaved who lost a loved one who received end-of-life care during the pandemic in Portugal. Most participants were female, married, professionally active and had lost their grandparents. A hierarchical multiple regression was performed to determine the factors associated with prolonged grief symptoms. The results showed that more prolonged grief symptoms were associated with less social support, worsening of the financial situation, greater psychological impact of restrictions on communicating with the deceased, and the deceas having received end-of-life care in a hospital. The early identification based on these factors of individuals at higher risk for more prolonged grief symptoms could allow for targeted interventions and support services.This study unveils crucial factors contributing to heightened grief amid pandemic-related losses and challenges in end-of-life care, which provide practical insights for healthcare practitioners. Highlight the importance of personalized interventions to fortify social connections, address financial challenges, and offer compassionate alternatives to hospital-centric care. Due to the increased resistance to all available antibiotics and the lack of vaccines, Neisseria gonorrhoeae (the gonococcus) poses an urgent threat. Although the mechanisms of virulence and antibiotic resistance have been largely investigated in this bacterium, very few studies have addressed the stringent response (SR) that in pathogenic bacteria controls the expression of genes involved in host-pathogen interaction and tolerance and persistence toward antibiotics. In this study, the results of the transcriptome analysis of a clinical isolate of N. gonorrhoeae, after induction of the SR by serine hydroxamate, provided us with an accurate list of genes that are transcriptionally modulated during the SR. The list includes genes associated with metabolism, cellular machine functions, host-pathogen interaction, genome plasticity, and antibiotic tolerance and persistence. Moreover, we found that the artificial induction of the SR in N. gonorrhoeae by serine hydroxamate is prevented by thiostrepton, a thiopeptide antibiotic that is known to interact with ribosomal protein L11, thereby inhibiting functions of EF-Tu and EF-G, and binding of pppGpp synthase I (RelA) to ribosome upon entry of uncharged tRNA. We found that N. gonorrhoeae is highly sensitive to thiostrepton under in vitro conditions, and that thiostrepton, in contrast to other antibiotics, does not induce tolerance or persistence. Finally, we observed that thiostrepton attenuated the expression of key genes involved in the host-pathogen interaction. These properties make thiostrepton a good drug candidate for dampening bacterial virulence and preventing antibiotic tolerance and persistence. The ongoing challenge is to increase the bioavailability of thiostrepton through the use of chemistry and nanotechnology.

A dual nutrition mode (i.e., mixotrophy) can be advantageous for alien species in a new environment. In Cearà (Brazil), the symbiotic jellyfish Cassiopea andromeda is rapidly spreading under diverse environmental conditions across natural and human-altered coastal habitats, such as mangroves and shrimp farms. Here we report on the trophic ecology of the alien upside-down jellyfish sampled in these two contrasting coastal habitats during the dry (July–October) and rainy (January–April) seasons, investigated by means of organic biomarkers (lipids, carbohydrates) and bulk tissue stable isotope (δ15N and δ13C) analyses. Total lipid content of jellyfish gonads was generally higher in shrimp farms, whereas no significant difference in carbohydrate concentration was found in jellyfish tissues from the two different habitats. Similarly, there were no significant differences in the δ15N values of jellyfish tissues from the two contrasting habitats, whereas the δ13C values were higher in jellyfish from shrimp farms. Overall, the higher carbon-enriched value in aquaculture ponds supports the hypothesis of differences of available food sources compared to the natural mangrove habitats, where food availability exhibits a stronger seasonality. In fact, aquaculture ponds are characterized by human-driven regular food supply, leading to more stable trophic conditions and to enhanced growth, lipid production, and gonadal output of C. andromeda jellyfish. This investigation may contribute to predicting how Cassiopea mixotrophy may contribute to explaining its differential success in different habitats.

Synapses are an early pathological target in many neurodegenerative diseases ranging from well-known adult onset conditions such as Alzheimer and Parkinson disease to neurodegenerative conditions of childhood such as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCLs). However, the reasons why synapses are particularly vulnerable to such a broad range of neurodegeneration inducing stimuli remains unknown. To identify molecular modulators of synaptic stability and degeneration, we have used the Cln3 -/- mouse model of a juvenile form of NCL. We profiled and compared the molecular composition of anatomically-distinct, differentially-affected pre-synaptic populations from the Cln3 -/- mouse brain using proteomics followed by bioinformatic analyses. Identified protein candidates were then tested using a Drosophila CLN3 model to study their ability to modify the CLN3-neurodegenerative phenotype in vivo. We identified differential perturbations in a range of molecular cascades correlating with synaptic vulnerability, including valine catabolism and rho signalling pathways. Genetic and pharmacological targeting of key 'hub' proteins in such pathways was sufficient to modulate phenotypic presentation in a Drosophila CLN3 model. We propose that such a workflow provides a target rich method for the identification of novel disease regulators which could be applicable to the study of other conditions where appropriate models exist.

Contrast arteriography (CA) is considered the gold standard to evaluate any phase in peripheral arterial disease (PAD) interventions, from diagnostics to final results. Nevertheless, duplex ultrasonography (DUS) mostly used for the pre/postoperative phase and follow-up control, could be a potential intraoperative adjunctive imaging tool to assess the effects of endovascular revascularization in patients with iliac and femoropopliteal lesions. The PAD “duplex-assisted” protocol includes a preoperative DUS control followed by an intraoperative and a postoperative control. The most important parameters are pulsed doppler spectral analysis and waveform changes, which are impossible to detect with intravascular ultrasound (IVUS). By using a similar acronym, the intraoperative DUS has been previously described as extravascular ultrasound (EVUS). B-mode imaging, color flow, and peak systolic velocity (PSV) are considered. EVUS could be very useful to evaluate the effects of endovascular treatment, mainly in cases of unclear CAs, severe calcifications and/or dissections. In the context of the “leaving nothing behind” strategy, EVUS can drive the physician to evaluate the absence of flow-limiting dissections and decide which target lesion should be treated with antirestenotic therapy, further vessel preparation, or stenting. The EVUS protocol could be a safe and feasible option to improve the completion assessment of endovascular PAD treatment. A better ultrasound waveform is a sign of improved luminal gain and compliance, which is extremely important to finalize the results of new peripheral device technology, such as intravascular lithotripsy.

Objective: To assess the complex management of arterial anomalies in Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (vEDS). Methods: We report the case of a 34-year-old male, diagnosed with vEDS, who presented with acute intraperitoneal hemorrhage caused by the rupture of a splenic artery aneurysm, treated in emergency with coil embolization and splenectomy. Computed Tomography (CT) scan showed the concomitant presence of right renal artery (RRA) and common hepatic artery (CHA) aneurysms. Results: Both aneurysms were conservatively managed and the patient went through serial CT imaging. After 3 months, rapid regression of the vascular abnormalities led to complete disappearing of RRA and CHA aneurysms, confirmed at 24-month imaging follow-up. In the same time span, two pseudoaneurysms developed in other sites used for transarterial access, requiring two secondary interventions. The present case emphasizes the unpredictability of disease's evolution and arterial complications in vEDS. Conservative management of complex lesions such as visceral artery aneurysms, which in this case resulted to be the best strategy, avoided the risks associated with surgical intervention in such fragile tissues. Abstract Background In fly brains, the Drosophila Adar (adenosine deaminase acting on RNA) enzyme edits hundreds of transcripts to generate edited isoforms of encoded proteins. Nearly all editing events are absent or less efficient in larvae but increase at metamorphosis; the larger number and higher levels of editing suggest editing is most required when the brain is most complex. This idea is consistent with the fact that Adar mutations affect the adult brain most dramatically. However, it is unknown whether Drosophila Adar RNA editing events mediate some coherent physiological effect. To address this question, we performed a genetic screen for suppressors of Adar mutant defects. Adar 5G1 null mutant flies are partially viable, severely locomotion defective, aberrantly accumulate axonal neurotransmitter pre-synaptic vesicles and associated proteins, and develop an age-dependent vacuolar brain neurodegeneration. Results A genetic screen revealed suppression of all Adar 5G1 mutant phenotypes tested by reduced dosage of the Tor gene, which encodes a pro-growth kinase that increases translation and reduces autophagy in well-fed conditions. Suppression of Adar 5G1 phenotypes by reduced Tor is due to increased autophagy; overexpression of Atg5, which increases canonical autophagy initiation, reduces aberrant accumulation of synaptic vesicle proteins and suppresses all Adar mutant phenotypes tested. Endosomal microautophagy (eMI) is another Tor-inhibited autophagy pathway involved in synaptic homeostasis in Drosophila. Increased expression of the key eMI protein Hsc70-4 also reduces aberrant accumulation of synaptic vesicle proteins and suppresses all Adar 5G1 mutant phenotypes tested. Conclusions These findings link Drosophila Adar mutant synaptic and neurotransmission defects to more general cellular defects in autophagy; presumably, edited isoforms of CNS proteins are required for optimum synaptic response capabilities in the brain during the behaviorally complex adult life stage.
