Identifying the biotic and abiotic factors that determine the variation in the distribution and abundance of populations has become a great challenge for the field of ecology in recent years. Thus, in this study we evaluated the effect of abiotic variables and the abundance of predators on the abundance of Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae, the variation in the average length of the individuals between lakes and periods, and the effect of the abiotic variables and abundance of predators on the structure in length of that species. Sixteen lakes of the Cuiabá river flood plain were sampled in June (drying period), September (dry period) and December (flooding period) 2005 and March (flood period) 2006. For M. sanctaefilomenae, the distribution is ampler and the abundance is greater at the end of the drying period, beginning of dry season, reducing gradually over the periods of dry, drying and flood season. Additionally, the period affects the structure in size of the populations that are spatially homogeneous. Smaller individuals were captured at the end of the drying period and the larger individuals at the start of flooding. During the end of the drying period and in the beginning of the dry season, the spatial variation in the abundance of the population was positively related with pH, dissolved oxygen and macrophyte cover and area of the lake, but not with the local abundance of predators in the littoral zone of the lakes Identificar os fatores bióticos e abióticos que determinam a variação na distribuição e abundância das populações, tornou-se nos últimos anos um grande desafio para os ecologistas. Assim neste estudo foram avaliados o efeito das variáveis abióticas e a abundância de predadores sobre a abundância de Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae, a variação no comprimento médio dos indivíduos entre lagoas e períodos e o efeito das variáveis abióticas e da abundância de predadores sobre a estrutura em comprimento. Foram amostradas 16 lagoas da planície de inundação do rio Cuiabá, no período de junho (vazante), setembro (seca) e dezembro (enchente) de 2005 e março (cheia) de 2006. Para M. sanctaefilomenae,a distribuição é mais ampla e a abundância é maior no final da vazante, início da seca, reduzindo-se gradualmente ao longo dos períodos de seca, enchente e cheia. Adicionalmente, o período afeta a estrutura em tamanho das populações, que são espacialmente homogêneas. Indivíduos menores foram capturados no final do período de vazante e os maiores ao início da enchente. Durante o final da vazante/início da seca, a variação espacial na abundância da população foi relacionada positivamente com o pH, o oxigênio dissolvido e cobertura de macrófitas e área da lagoa, mas, não com a abundância local de predadores na zona litorânea das lagoas.

Had been evaluated ecological factors that affect the distribution of the genus Astyanax in Chapada dos Guimarães headstreams, Cuiabá River basin, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Samples in 27 streams had been made in Chapada dos Guimarães, and the fish had been collected through the method of electric fish, and the ambient data had been analyzed with one technique of called ordinance of Principal Components Analysis (PCA). 250 individuals had been collect, being 95 A. asuncionensis, 62 A. abramis, 36 A.lineatus and 57 individuals had been captured identified like A. scabripinnis (Jenyns, 1842) sensu Eigenmann, 1927. In relation the ambient characteristics, the variables gotten allowed two axes of the PCA, who explain 53,114 % of the variance of the seven variables analyzed. Axle 1, Main Component 1, explained 31,147 % and Axle 2, Main Component 2, explained 21,967 % of the variation of the ambient data. The formation of axle 1 was influenced positively by the depth and negative by the conductivity and pH. The formation of axle 2 was influenced positively by the Turbidity and negative to the Dissolved Oxygen. The ordinance of the species throughout for the axes corroborated for the understanding of the distribution of specimens. Foram avaliados fatores ecológicos que afetam a distribuição do gênero Astyanax em riachos de cabeceira de Chapada dos Guimarães, bacia do Rio Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brasil. Foram amostrados 27 riachos de cabeceira de Chapada dos Guimarães, e os peixes foram coletados através do método de pesca elétrica, e os dados ambientais foram analisados pela Análise de Componentes Principais (PCA). Foram capturados 250 indivíduos pertencentes ao gênero Astyanax, sendo 95 A. asuncionensis, 62 A. abramis, 36 A. lineatus e 57 indivíduos identificados como A. scabripinnis (Jenyns, 1842) sensu Eigenmann, 1927. Em relação as características ambientais, as variações obtidas permitiram a formação de dois eixos da PCA explanaram 53,114 % da variância das sete variáveis analisadas. O Eixo 1, Componente Principal 1, explicou 31,147 % e o Eixo 2, Componente Principal 2, explicou 21,967 % da variação dos dados ambientais.A formação do eixo 1 foi influenciada positivamente pela profundidade e negativamente pela condutividade e pH. A formação do eixo 2 foi influenciada positivamente pela turbidez e negativamente pelo Oxigênio dissolvido. A ordenação das espécies ao longo dos eixos formados corroborou para a compreensão da distribuição dos espécimes. Studies on population structure of freshwater turtles belonging to the family Chelidae are scarce in Brazil. Herein we describe the structure of a population of the chelid Mesoclemmys vanderhaegei in a Cerrado area in the municipality of Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso, Brazil. A total of 80 individuals were captured in five collecting sites, from January to March 2007: 42 adult females, 27 adult males, and 11 juveniles with undetermined sex. Among 80 individuals, 24% were recaptured, at least once. This is the first attempt to estimate the size of a population of Mesoclemmys vanderhaegei. Our results suggest that additional sampling efforts are needed for more accurate estimates of population structure. Nevertheless, they surely provide minimum values of the number of individuals of M. vanderhaegei living in the locality sampled. Estudos sobre estrutura de populações de quelônios da família Chelidae são escassos no Brasil. Nós descrevemos a estrutura de uma população de Mesoclemmys vanderhaegei de uma área de Cerrado, no município de Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso, Brasil. Os indivíduos foram capturados entre os meses de janeiro e março de 2007, em cinco sítios de coleta. Foram capturados 80 indivíduos: 42 fêmeas, 27 machos e 11 indivíduos com sexo não determinado (jovens). Dos 80 indivíduos capturados, 24% foram recapturados pelo menos uma vez. Esta é a primeira tentativa de estimar o tamanho de uma população de Mesoclemmys vanderhaegei. Embora nossas estimativas sugiram a necessidade de maior esforço de captura, nossos dados permitem apontar números mínimos de indivíduos para a localidade amostrada.
