Abstract Oracle bone script, one of the earliest known forms of ancient Chinese writing, presents invaluable research materials for scholars studying the humanities and geography of the Shang Dynasty, dating back 3,000 years. The immense historical and cultural significance of these writings cannot be overstated. However, the passage of time has obscured much of their meaning, presenting a significant challenge in deciphering these ancient texts. With the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI), employing AI to assist in deciphering Oracle Bone Characters (OBCs) has become a feasible option. Yet, progress in this area has been hindered by a lack of high-quality datasets. To address this issue, this paper details the creation of the HUST-OBC dataset. This dataset encompasses 77,064 images of 1,588 individual deciphered characters and 62,989 images of 9,411 undeciphered characters, with a total of 140,053 images, compiled from diverse sources. The hope is that this dataset could inspire and assist future research in deciphering those unknown OBCs. All the codes and datasets are available at https://github.com/Pengjie-W/HUST-OBC .

Abstract Phenolic compounds have long captivated the interest of organic synthesis, particularly in their quest for selective hydroxylation of arenes using H2O as a hydroxyl source. However, the inherent high reactivity and low redox potential of phenols often lead to undesirable overoxidation byproducts. To address this challenge, herein, we develop an electrophotochemical approach, finetuning substrate oxidative potential and enabling para-selective hydroxylation of anilides. This method showcases versatility, accommodating a wide array of substrates, while revealing high regional selectivity and compatibility with diverse functional groups. Moreover, the protocol allows facile late-stage functionalization of biologically active molecules. Mechanistic investigations demonstrate the activation of anilides by the excited state photocatalyst, effectively decreasing their oxidative potential and enhancing regional selectivity during hydroxylation. By using this protocol, important drug molecules such as Paracetamol, Fenretinide, Practolol, and AM404 could be synthesized, demonstrating the applicability of this approach in drug synthesis and late-stage functionalization.

IntroductionObesity, a pervasive global epidemic, has heightened susceptibility to chronic ailments and diminished the overall life expectancy on a global scale. Probiotics and inulin (IN) have been documented to mitigate obesity by exerting an influence on the composition of the gut microbiota. Whether heat-killed Bifidobacterium longum BBMN68 (MN68) and IN have an anti-obesity effect remains to be investigated.MethodsIn this study, Wistar rats were fed a high-fat diet (HFD), and orally administered heat-killed MN68 (2 × 1011 CFU/kg) and/or inulin (0.25 kg/kg) for 12 weeks. Histological analysis, serology analysis and 16S rRNA gene sequencing were performed.ResultsHeat-killed MN68 + IN treatment showed an enhanced effect on preventing weight gain, diminishing fat accumulation, and regulating lipid metabolism, compared to either heat-killed MN68 treatment or inulin treatment. Gut microbiota results showed that heat-killed MN68 + IN treatment significantly increased the relative abundance of Bacteroidota, Oscillospira, Intestinimonas, Christensenella, and Candidatus_Stoquefichus, and reduced the relative abundance of Enterococcus. Furthermore, heat-killed MN68 + IN significantly increased the SCFA levels, which were correlated with changes in the gut microbiota.DiscussionThis research provides support for the application of heat-killed MN68 and IN in the treatment of obesity, and highlights the combination of heat-killed BBMN68 and IN as functional food ingredients.

Hypercholesterolemia is a metabolic disease characterized by elevated cholesterol level in the blood, which is a risk factor for many diseases. Probiotic intervention may be one of the ways to improve hypercholesterolemia. In this study, three strains with better cholesterol removal ability were selected from 60 strains of lactic acid bacteria, and were orally administered to apolipoprotein E-deficient mice on a high-cholesterol diet. Among the three strains, only Limosilactobacillus fermentum TY-S11, which was isolated from the intestine of a longevity person, significantly improved serum and liver lipid levels in hypercholesterolemic mice. Further study found that L. fermentum TY-S11 promoted the excretion of cholesterol in the feces and inhibited the absorption of cholesterol in the small intestine. As for gut microbiota, the results showed that L. fermentum TY-S11 not only prevented the reduction of diversity caused by high-cholesterol diet, but also increased the contents of short-chain fatty acids in feces. These results confirmed the ameliorative effect of L. fermentum TY-S11 on hypercholesterolemia.

Introducing Holstein cows on Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is a potential solution to enhance local milk production. However, the relationship between milk quality and altitude in China remains unknown. Therefore, the components and plasmin (PL) system of raw milk from different altitudes (sea level, 1600, 2700, and 3800 m) were investigated. The daily milk production of Holstein cows and PL activity decreased as the altitude increased. However, the components content of raw milk, plasminogen (PLG)/PL ratio, activities of PLG and plasmin activator (PA) increased with altitude. The pasteurization resulted a significant decrease in PA activity of all milk and a significant increase in PL activity in milk collected at higher altitudes (2700 and 3800 m), suggesting the pasteurization was unsuitable for preserving milk at higher altitudes. This study offered references for the production and storage of milk after introducing Holstein cows on Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

Abstract Interacting electrons in one dimension (1D) are governed by the Luttinger liquid (LL) theory in which excitations are fractionalized. Can a LL-like state emerge in a 2D system as a stable zero-temperature phase? This question is crucial in the study of non-Fermi liquids. A recent experiment identified twisted bilayer tungsten ditelluride (tWTe2) as a 2D host of LL-like physics at a few kelvins. Here we report evidence for a 2D anisotropic LL state down to 50 mK, spontaneously formed in tWTe2 with a twist angle of ~ 3o. While the system is metallic-like and nearly isotropic above 2 K, a dramatically enhanced electronic anisotropy develops in the millikelvin regime. In the anisotropic phase, we observe characteristics of a 2D LL phase including a power-law across-wire conductance and a zero-bias dip in the along-wire differential resistance. Our results represent a step forward in the search for stable LL physics beyond 1D.

Diabetes has become one of the most prevalent global epidemics, significantly impacting both the economy and the health of individuals. Diabetes is associated with numerous complications, such as obesity; hyperglycemia; hypercholesterolemia; dyslipidemia; metabolic endotoxemia; intestinal barrier damage; insulin-secretion defects; increased oxidative stress; and low-grade, systemic, and chronic inflammation. Diabetes cannot be completely cured; therefore, current research has focused on developing various methods to control diabetes. A promising strategy is the use of probiotics for diabetes intervention. Probiotics are a class of live, non-toxic microorganisms that can colonize the human intestine and help improve the balance of intestinal microbiota. In this review, we summarize the current clinical studies on using probiotics to control diabetes in humans, along with mechanistic studies conducted in animal models. The primary mechanism by which probiotics regulate diabetes is improved intestinal barrier integrity, alleviated oxidative stress, enhanced immune response, increased short-chain fatty acid production, etc. Therefore, probiotic supplementation holds great potential for the prevention and management of diabetes.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now recognized as the most prevalent liver disease globally. Pea albumin (PA) has demonstrated positive impacts on reducing obesity and improving glucose metabolism. In this research, a mouse model of NAFLD induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) was employed to examine the impact of PA on NAFLD and explore its potential mechanisms. The findings revealed that mice subjected to a HFD developed pronounced fatty liver alterations. The intervention with PA significantly lowered serum TC by 26.81%, TG by 43.55%, and LDL-C by 57.79%. It also elevated HDL-C levels by 1.2 fold and reduced serum ALT by 37.94% and AST by 31.21% in mice fed a HFD. These changes contributed to the reduction in hepatic steatosis and lipid accumulation. Additionally, PA improved insulin resistance and inhibited hepatic oxidative stress and inflammatory responses. Mechanistic studies revealed that PA alleviated lipid accumulation in HFD-induced NAFLD by activating the phosphorylation of AMPKα and ACC, inhibiting the expression of SREBF1 and FASN to reduce hepatic lipogenesis, and increasing the expression of ATGL, PPARα, and PPARγ to promote lipolysis and fatty acid oxidation. These results indicate that PA could serve as a dietary supplement for alleviating NAFLD, offering a theoretical foundation for the rational intake of PA in NAFLD intervention.

Microplastics (MPs) are environmental pollutants and can be inhaled by humans to threaten health. The lung tissue, responsible for the gas exchange between the body and the environment, is vulnerable to MPs exposure. However, from the perspective of cellular senescence, the effect of MPs on lung cells and tissues has not yet been deeply dissected. In this study, we reported that all the four typical MPs exhibited the significant biological effects in term of inducing senescence of human lung derived cells A549 and BEAS-2B in vitro. We further found that polyvinyl chloride (PVC) increased the reactive oxygen species (ROS) level in A549 cells and that PVC-induced senescent characteristics could be largely reversed by antioxidant treatment. Importantly, intratracheal instillation of PVC MPs in mice could effectively impair their physical function, induce the increased systemic inflammation level, cause the accumulation of senescent cells. Our study demonstrates that MPs induce senescence in human lung epithelial cells and mouse lungs by activating ROS signaling, and provides new insight into the potential pathogenesis of MPs on lung diseases.

Momordica Charantia Polysaccharide (MCP), the main active ingredient of M. charantia, exhibits multiple pharmacological properties. However, its effects and mechanisms against ulcerative colitis (UC) remain unclear. In this study, we employed a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced experimental colitis model to investigate the therapeutic potential of MCP. Our results revealed that prophylactic MCP dramatically attenuated the pathological symptoms associated with colitis in mice, including body weight loss, reduction in colon length, and tissue damage. Moreover, we found prophylactic MCP reduced DSS-induced intestinal permeability and enhanced intestinal barrier integrity. Notably, we observe that prophylactic MCP restored the diversity and richness of the gut microbiota, thereby ameliorating gut microbiota dysbiosis in DSS-induced mice models. Furthermore, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) experiments demonstrated that the microbiota derived from MCP-dosed mice remarkably alleviated colitis symptoms. Collectively, our study provided valuable insights into the potential of MCP as a promising prebiotic agent for maintaining intestinal health, and demonstrated that MCP ameliorated colitis in a gut microbiota-dependent manner.

Gastrointestinal (GI) afflictions are prevalent among the feline population, wherein the intricacies of the gut microbiome exert a profound influence on their overall health. Alterations within this microbial consortium can precipitate a cascade of physiological changes, notably in immune function and antioxidant capacity. This research investigated the impact of Bifidobacterium lactis (B. lactis) and Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) on cats’ GI health, exploring the effects of probiotic supplementation on the intestinal ecosystem using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The findings demonstrated a significant improvement in gut barrier function by reducing plasma concentrations of D-lactate (D-LA) by 30.38% and diamine oxidase (DAO) by 22.68%, while increasing the population of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus. There was a notable 25% increase in immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels, evidenced by increases of 19.13% in catalase (CAT), 23.94% in superoxide dismutase (SOD), and 21.81% in glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px). Further analysis revealed positive correlations between Lactobacillus abundance and IgA, CAT, and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) levels. These correlations indicate that B. lactis and L. plantarum enhance feline immune and antioxidant functions by increasing the abundance of beneficial Lactobacillus in the GI tract. These findings provide a foundation for probiotic interventions aimed at enhancing health and disease resistance in feline populations.

In 2023, this study monitored nine types of antibiotics in the influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in the urban and suburban areas of Tangshan. The total antibiotics concentration detected in influent WWTPs was highest in winter, followed by spring, summer, and autumn. The antibiotics concentration in influent and effluent urban WWTPs was higher than that in the suburban WWTPs in spring, summer, and winter, while the trend was reversed in autumn. Roxithromycin and oxytetracycline had a risk quotient (RQ) value of ≥0.1 in the effluent of WWTPs in winter, indicating that they are medium-risk antibiotics that pose a risk to the aquatic ecosystem after discharge. In the study area, the per capita pollution load of antibiotics was highest in spring, summer, and autumn for sulfamethoxazole, while it was highest in winter for ofloxacin. In the urban area, the use of roxithromycin, sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethoxazole, and ofloxacin was highest in spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively, while in suburban areas, the use of sulfamethoxazole, norfloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, and ofloxacin was highest during the same period. The use of antibiotics in the urban area was one order of magnitude higher than that in suburban areas, indicating a possible overuse of antibiotics in urban environments.

Volatile active ingredients in biopolymer nanofibers are prone to burst and uncontrolled release. In this study, we used electrospinning and crosslinking to design a new sustained-release active packaging containing zein and eugenol (EU). Vapor-phase glutaraldehyde (GTA) was used as the crosslinker. Characterization of the crosslinked zein nanofibers was conducted via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mechanical properties, water resistance, and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. It was observed that crosslinked zein nanofibers did not lose their fiber shape, but the diameter of the fibers increased. By increasing the crosslink time, the mechanical properties and water resistance of the crosslinked zein nanofibers were greatly improved. The FT-IR results demonstrated the formation of chemical bonds between free amino groups in zein molecules and aldehyde groups in GTA molecules. EU was added to the zein nanofibers, and the corresponding release behavior in PBS was investigated using the dialysis membrane method. With an increase in crosslink time, the release rate of EU from crosslinked zein nanofibers decreased. This study demonstrates the potential of crosslinking by GTA vapors on the controlled release of the zein encapsulation structure containing EU. Such sustainable-release nanofibers have promising potential for the design of fortified foods or as active and smart food packaging.

To investigate the gelation process of direct ultra-high-temperature (UHT) milk, a pilot-scale steam infusion heat treatment was used to process milk samples over a wide temperature of 142–157 °C for 0.116–6 s, followed by storage at 4 °C, 25 °C, and 37 °C. The results of the physicochemical properties of milk showed that the particle sizes and plasmin activities of all milk samples increased during storage at 25 °C, but age gelation only occurred in three treated samples, 147 °C/6 s, 142 °C/6 s, and 142 °C/3 s, which all had lower plasmin activities. Furthermore, the properties of formed gels were further compared and analyzed by the measures of structure and intermolecular interaction. The results showed that the gel formed in the 147 °C/6 s-treated milk with a higher C* value had a denser network structure and higher gel strength, while the 142 °C/6 s-treated milk had the highest porosity. Furthermore, disulfide bonds were the largest contributor to the gel structure, and there were significant differences in disulfide bonds, hydrophobic interaction forces, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic force among the gels. Our results showed that the occurrence of gel was not related to the thermal load, and the different direct UHT treatments produced different age gels in the milk.

Sleep deprivation (SD) leads to impaired intestinal barrier function and intestinal flora disorder, especially a reduction in the abundance of the next generation of probiotic Faecalibacterium prausnitzii (F. prausnitzii). However, it remains largely unclear whether F. prausnitzii can ameliorate SD-induced intestinal barrier damage. A 72 h SD mouse model was used in this research, with or without the addition of F. prausnitzii. The findings indicated that pre-colonization with F. prausnitzii could protect against tissue damage from SD, enhance goblet cell count and MUC2 levels in the colon, boost tight-junction protein expression, decrease macrophage infiltration, suppress pro-inflammatory cytokine expression, and reduce apoptosis. We found that the presence of F. prausnitzii helped to balance the gut microbiota in SD mice by reducing harmful bacteria like Klebsiella and Staphylococcus, while increasing beneficial bacteria such as Akkermansia. Ion chromatography analysis revealed that F. prausnitzii pretreatment increased the fecal butyrate level in SD mice. Overall, these results suggested that incorporating F. prausnitzii could help reduce gut damage caused by SD, potentially by enhancing the intestinal barrier and balancing gut microflora. This provides a foundation for utilizing probiotics to protect against intestinal illnesses.

Background: The milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) is a thin film that exists within the milk emulsion, suspended on the surface of milk fat globules, and comprises a diverse array of bioactive components. Recent advancements in MFGM research have sparked a growing interest in its biological characteristics and health-related functions. Thorough exploration and utilization of MFGM as a significant bioactive constituent in milk emulsion can profoundly impact human health in a positive manner. Scope and approach: This review comprehensively examines the current progress in understanding the structure, composition, physicochemical properties, methods of separation and purification, and biological activity of MFGM. Additionally, it underscores the vast potential of MFGM in the development of additives and drug delivery systems, with a particular focus on harnessing the surface activity and stability of proteins and phospholipids present on the MFGM for the production of natural emulsifiers and drug encapsulation materials. Key findings and conclusions: MFGM harbors numerous active substances that possess diverse physiological functions, including the promotion of digestion, maintenance of the intestinal mucosal barrier, and facilitation of nerve development. Typically employed as a dietary supplement in infant formula, MFGM’s exceptional surface activity has propelled its advancement toward becoming a natural emulsifier or encapsulation material. This surface activity is primarily derived from the amphiphilicity of polar lipids and the stability exhibited by highly glycosylated proteins.

Browning and other undesirable effects on Agaricus bisporus (A. bisporus) during storage seriously affect its commercial value. In this study, a strain, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum NML21, that resists browning and delays the deterioration of A. bisporus was screened among 72 strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), and its preservative effect was analyzed. The results demonstrated that gallic acid, catechin, and protocatechuic acid promoted the growth of NML21, and the strain conversion rates of gallic acid and protocatechuic acid reached 97.16% and 95.85%, respectively. During a 15 d storage of the samples, the NML21 treatment displayed a reduction in the browning index (58.4), weight loss (2.64%), respiration rate (325.45 mg kg−1 h−1), and firmness (0.65 N). The treatment further inhibited Pseudomonas spp. growth and polyphenol oxidase activity, improved the antioxidant capacity, reduced the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, and reduced the malonaldehyde content and cell membrane conductivity. Taken together, the optimized concentrations of NML21 may extend the shelf life of A. bisporus for 3–6 d and could be a useful technique for preserving fresh produce.

Ensuring the stability of zein nanoparticles at different pH levels is crucial for their application as nanocarriers. In this study, octenyl succinic anhydride-modified starch (OSA-modified starch) was employed to enhance the stability of zein nanoparticles against different pH levels by forming complex nanoparticles with OSA-modified starch. The effect of preparation pH on the stability of the zein/OSA-modified starch nanoparticles was investigated. Sedimentation occurred in zein nanoparticles as the pH reached the isoelectric point. However, the stability of zein nanoparticles at various pH levels significantly improved after adding OSA-modified starch to form zein/OSA-modified starch nanoparticles regardless of whether they were prepared under acidic or alkaline pH conditions. Notably, the stability of zein/OSA-modified starch nanoparticles prepared at an acidic pH was higher than that of those prepared at an alkaline pH, thereby highlighting the critical role of the preparation pH for zein/OSA-modified starch in maintaining the stability of zein. The stable zein/OSA-modified starch nanoparticles developed in this study exhibit significant potential for use in delivery systems across various pH environments.

Flavor is a crucial parameter for assessing the sensory quality of yak milk. However, there is limited information regarding the factors influencing its taste. In this study, the effects of endogenous lipoprotein lipase (LPL) on the volatile flavor components of yak milk under storage conditions of 4 °C, 18 °C and 65 °C were analyzed via headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) combined with orthogonal partial least-squares (OPSL) discrimination, and the reasons for the changes in yak milk flavors were investigated. Combined with the difference in the changes in volatile flavor substance before and after the action of LPL, LPL was found to have a significant effect on the flavor of fresh yak milk. Fresh milk was best kept at 4 °C for 24 h and pasteurized for more than 24 h. Principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) were employed to characterize the volatile components in yak milk under various treatment conditions. Twelve substances with significant influence on yak milk flavor were identified by measuring their VIP values. Notably, 2-nonanone, heptanal, and ethyl caprylate exhibited OAV values greater than 1, indicating their significant contribution to the flavor of yak milk. Conversely, 4-octanone and 2-heptanone displayed OAV values between 0.1 and 1, showing their important role in modifying the flavor of yak milk. These findings can serve as monitoring indicators for assessing the freshness of yak milk.

Alcohol-induced liver injury poses a significant threat to human health. Probiotics have been proven to prevent and treat alcohol-induced liver injury. In this study, the preventive effect of Bifidobacterium lactis TY-S01 on alcohol-induced liver injury in mice was investigated. TY-S01 pretreatment effectively protected mice against alcohol-induced liver injury by preserving the levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol in serum and maintaining the levels of the inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6 and interleukin-1β in liver tissue. Additionally, TY-S01 could maintain the endotoxin levels in serum, maintain the mRNA expression levels of zonula occluden-1, occludin, claudin-1 and claudin-3 in the gut, and prevent gut microbiota dysbiosis in mice with alcoholic liver injury. Spearman's correlation analysis revealed that there was a clear correlation among serum indicators, inflammatory cytokines and gut microbiota. In conclusion, TY-S01 attenuates alcohol-induced liver injury by protecting the integrity of the intestinal barrier and maintaining the balance of the gut microbiota.

To investigate the difference in aroma between high aroma black tea and traditional congou black tea, electronic nose and GC-MS were used to investigate the key factors that differentiated the aroma quality of high aroma black tea from traditional congou black tea. The results showed that the high aroma black tea had a predominantly floral aroma, while the traditional congou black tea aroma presented a sweet aroma. GC-MS detected 78 volatile substances in the two black teas, among which linalool oxide, linalool, methyl salicylate, pentanol, 2-cyclopropylethanol, (-)-carveol, β-cyclocitral, 2-ethylfuran, 1,3,8-menthatrien and 1,4-pentadiene were important aroma components to distinguish the different flavours of black tea. The total of the response values of the electronic nose detection of traditional congou black tea was significantly higher than that of high aroma black tea. The multivariate statistical analysis allowed S6 and S10 electrode signals for the identification of different flavours of black tea, and predicted that 1,4-pentadiene was an important volatile substance for the identification of different flavours of black tea. The results confirmed the aroma composition characteristics of high fragrant black tea and distinguished it from traditional congou black tea, and would provide a theoretical basis for further classification of different flavor black tea.

Glucoraphanin is an important glucosinolate which is widely distributed in Brassica vegetables and poses an anticancer effect to humans. Although researchers have paid a lot of attention to the changes in glucoraphanin concentration in seedlings of broccoli over 1–2 weeks, there has been little research focusing on the total whole-sprout glucoraphanin content within broccoli seedlings over 1–5 weeks. However, it is necessary to clarify the changes in total glucoraphanin content during the broccoli sprouting stage as broccoli seedlings are novel plant foods. This research explored glucoraphanin absolute accumulation and the biosynthesis mechanism in broccoli seedlings during a 5-week growth period. The results showed that glucoraphanin accumulation content was higher at week 4 than in the seeds. Moreover, the relative DL-methionine contents increased significantly after 3 weeks. Glucoraphanin synthetic gene expression levels were increased after 3 weeks, but the gene expressions of AOP3 (encoding 2-oxoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases) and MYR (encoding myrosinase) were significantly decreased. Furthermore, the 20 essential DEGs obtained can provide new insight into understanding the developmental regulation of broccoli seedlings. In addition, the results can also provide information on how to obtain higher glucoraphanin contents in broccoli sprouts.

The impact of prebiotics on the structural characteristics of yogurt is an important aspect of evaluating its functional properties. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effects of several commonly used prebiotics, including fructooligosaccharide (FOS), galactooligosaccharide (GOS), inulin (INU), polydextrose (PDX), and xylooligosaccharide (XOS), on the gel properties of milk protein and the structural features, with respect to the texture and rheology, of stirred yogurt during and after fermentation. The results revealed that the supplementation of INU, PDX, and XOS was involved in the construction of protein networks during fermentation, promoting a viscous and more elastic gel structure, due to the enhanced protein–water interactions. This resulted in a significant increase (p < 0.05) in structural stability (higher critical strain (γc) and greater thixotropy), firmness, cohesiveness, and rheology (G′ and G″) and a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in the loss of yogurt during centrifugation. Conversely, the supplementation of GOS and FOS did not appear to be involved in the construction of the protein network and barely affected the rheological properties of the gel during fermentation. However, a significant increase (p < 0.05) in viscosity and firmness, and a slight decrease (p > 0.05) in loss during centrifugation were still observed in the yogurt. These findings could be useful for a comprehensive assessment of the application potential of these prebiotics in yogurt, when combined with their respective prebiotic properties.

The escalating ambient ozone (O3) pollution in China has garnered significant attention, necessitating an intensified focus on O3 pollution control and the coordinated management of PM2.5 and O3. This study reviews and analyzes the spatiotemporal characteristics of O3 and PM2.5 concentrations in 13 cities within Heilongjiang Province from 2019 to 2021. The analysis is based on data sourced from the ecological environment monitoring network. In addition to this, correlation analyses were executed to explore the interaction between the two pollutants. The findings reveal a declining trajectory in PM2.5 concentration over the past three years, while O3 concentration has exhibited an upward trend. Temporally, both O3 and PM2.5 concentrations display pronounced seasonal variations, with peaks evident during the spring and summer (May to July), as well as in the winter (January, February, and December). From a spatial standpoint, elevated O3 concentrations were identified in the southwestern cities of Harbin, Daqing, and Suihua, while the northwestern cities of Daxinganling and Heihe exhibited comparatively lower O3 concentrations, but the difference was not significant. Conversely, PM2.5 concentrations demonstrated substantial variation among the 13 cities (districts). Regarding their correlation, a noteworthy positive correlation between the two pollutants was observed in April and May, contrasted by a negative correlation in November and December. Weather categories such as excellent, good, lightly polluted, moderately polluted, and other weather showed a lower correlation, whereas heavily polluted and severely polluted categories demonstrated a stronger correlation. Furthermore, the correlation with severe pollution is greater than that with heavily polluted, further indicating that heavier air pollution is more conducive to the coexistence of O3 and PM2.5 to form composite pollution. On a provincial scale, the correlation between the two pollutants is progressively increasing annually. This signifies a closely intertwined and intricate interaction and transformation relationship between O3 and PM2.5, accentuating the urgency for synergistic control measures.

The phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) gene family in tea plants (Camellia sinensis L.) encodes the enzyme that catalyzes the first reaction of the phenylpropane metabolic pathway. The present study aimed to characterize the PAL genes in tea plants, and get better insights on the CsPALs in anthocyanins accumulation. Seven CsPAL genes were identified and characterized in tea plants by bioinformatics analysis. Systematic analysis of CsPALs was conducted for its phylogenetic relationship, gene structure, chromosomal location, and protein conserved motifs based on tea plant genome. The cis-elements of CsPALs were responsive to light, abiotic stress, hormone, and MYB-binding site. Furthermore, tissue-specific expression analysis showed that CsPAL4 was expressed preferentially in young leaves and buds. Correlation analysis was performed in purple-leaf tea with anthocyanin components, and it was suggested that CsPAL4 was closely related with different anthocyanin accumulated, especially with cyanidin 3-O-galactoside, cyanidin 3-O-glucoside, and delphinidin 3-O-glucoside. Additionally, the putative upstream regulation factors CsMYBs (CsMYB59, CsARR1, CsSRM1, CsMYB101, and CsMYB52) and CsbHLHs (CsbHLH104, CsbHLH3, CsbIM1, CsTCP14, and CsPIF4) could bind to the promoter of CsPALs, thereby activating its transcription. This study provides a theoretical basis for further research to elucidate the functions of the CsPAL genes.

Very thin free-flowing liquid sheets are promising targets for high-repetition-rate laser-ion acceleration. In this work, we report the generation of micrometer-thin free-flowing liquid sheets from the collision of two liquid jets, and study the vibration and jitter in their surface normal direction. The dependence of their motion amplitudes on the generation parameters is studied in detail. The origins of the vibration and jitter are discussed. Our results indicate that when the generation parameters are optimized, the motion amplitudes in the stable region can be stabilized below 3.7 μm to meet the stringent requirement of sheet position stability for a tight-focusing setup in laser-ion acceleration experiments.

Post-acceleration of protons in helical coil targets driven by intense, ultrashort laser pulses can enhance ion energy by utilizing the transient current from the targets’ self-discharge. The acceleration length of protons can exceed a few millimeters, and the acceleration gradient is of the order of GeV/m. How to ensure the synchronization between the accelerating electric field and the protons is a crucial problem for efficient post-acceleration. In this paper, we study how the electric field mismatch induced by current dispersion affects the synchronous acceleration of protons. We propose a scheme using a two-stage helical coil to control the current dispersion. With optimized parameters, the energy gain of protons is increased by four times. Proton energy is expected to reach 45 MeV using a hundreds-of-terawatts laser, or more than 100 MeV using a petawatt laser, by controlling the current dispersion.

The phenomenon of group motion is common in nature, ranging from the schools of fish, birds and insects, to avalanches, landslides and sand drift. If we treat objects as collectively moving particles, such phenomena can be studied from a physical point of view, and the research on many-body systems has proved that marvelous effects can arise from the simplest individuals. The motion of numerous individuals presents different dynamic phases related to the ordering of the system. However, it is usually difficult to study the dynamic ordering and its transitions through experiments. Electron bubble states formed in a two-dimensional electron gas, as a type of electron solids, can be driven by an external electric field and provide a platform to study the dynamic collective behaviors. Here, we demonstrate that the noise spectrum is a powerful method to investigate the dynamics of bubble states. We observed not only the phenomena of dynamically ordered and disordered structures, but also unexpected alternations between them. Our results show that a dissipative system can convert between chaotic structures and ordered structures when tuning global parameters, which is concealed in conventional transport measurements of resistance or conductance. Moreover, charging the objects to study the electrical noise spectrum in collective motions can be an additional approach to revealing dynamic ordering transitions.

In order to explore the origin differences of black tea metabolites, the metabolites in black tea produced in Fu 'an and Youxi of Fujian province were compared and analyzed by using sensory evaluation method and extensive targeting metabolomic determination method of ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The results showed that, Fu'an black tea mainly tasted of “mellow and soft”, while Youxi black tea of “mellow and sweet”. A total of 937 metabolites including of flavonoids, phenolic acids, lipids, organic acids, amino acids and their derivatives were identified by metabonomics in the black tea of the two regions, through the principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) could significantly distinguish different producing area of black tea, and identified 410 species of metabolites with significant difference. The relative content of 291 different metabolites in Youxi black tea was higher than that of Fu 'an black tea, among which Astragalin, EC, L-glutamine, L-aspartic acid, L-lysine, L-tryptophan, L-glutamic acid, chlorogenic acid, phenethylamine, vitexin-2''-O-rhamnoside might have important contributions to the formation of different taste and quality of black tea from the two regions. Metabolic pathway analysis showed that the metabolism levels of amino acids and flavonoids of black tea between the two places were significantly different, which might be the reason for the difference in the taste and quality of black tea between the two places. The research would provide a theoretical basis for the identification of tea origin.

In this study, 12 flavonoid glycosides were selected based on virtual screening and the literature, and Quercimeritrin was selected as the best selective inhibitor of α-glucosidase through in vitro enzyme activity inhibition experiments. Its IC50 value for α-glucosidase was 79.88 µM, and its IC50 value for α-amylase >250 µM. As such, it could be used as a new selective inhibitor of α-glucosidase. The selective inhibition mechanism of Quercimeritrin on the two starch-digesting enzymes was further explored, and it was confirmed that Quercimeritrin had a strong binding affinity for α-glucosidase and occupied the binding pocket of α-glucosidase through non-covalent binding. Subsequently, animal experiments demonstrated that Quercimeritrin can effectively control postprandial blood glucose in vivo, with the same inhibitory effect as acarbose but without side effects. Our results, therefore, provide insights into how flavone aglycones can be used to effectively control the rate of digestion to improve postprandial blood glucose levels.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the post-heating induced changes in the textural and sensory characteristics of stirred fermented milk. The textural and rheological properties of post-heating fermented milk (55–85 °C, 25 s) with respect to viscoelastic behaviors, viscosity, textural parameters, etc., were monitored, and the friction behaviors and sensory attributes were assessed. Treatments below 65 °C/25 s increased the textural properties of fermented milk such as gel strength, firmness, and viscosity, due to the moderate aggregation and increased linkages of microgels. In this case, despite the size and amount their aggregates increased (~15–~21 μm), they exhibited similar frictional behaviors and sensory attributes. However, treatments above 65 °C/25 s degraded textural properties due to excessive aggregation (~46–~63 μm), accompanied by unacceptable grainy attributes, which could be characterized by their good correlations with tribological coefficients and particle size parameters. These findings could provide an understanding of the quality formation of post-heating fermented milk and a perspective to improve the textural defects of ambient fermented milk products.

Lipid metabolism plays crucial roles in cellular processes such as hormone synthesis, energy production, and fat storage. Older adults are at risk of the dysregulation of lipid metabolism, which is associated with progressive declines in the physiological function of various organs. With advancing age, digestion and absorption commonly change, thereby resulting in decreased nutrient uptake. However, in the elderly population, the accumulation of excess fat becomes more pronounced due to a decline in the body’s capacity to utilize lipids effectively. This is characterized by enhanced adipocyte synthesis and reduced breakdown, along with diminished peripheral tissue utilization capacity. Excessive lipid accumulation in the body, which manifests as hyperlipidemia and accumulated visceral fat, is linked to several chronic lipid-related diseases, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. This review provides a summary of the altered lipid metabolism during aging, including lipid digestion, absorption, anabolism, and catabolism, as well as their associations with age-related chronic diseases, which aids in developing nutritional interventions for older adults to prevent or alleviate age-related chronic diseases.

The composition, structure, and functionalities of prolamins from highland barley were investigated. These parameters were compared with those of the commonly applied prolamins (zein). There are more charged and hydrophilic amino acids in highland barely prolamins than zein. The molecular weight of highland barely prolamins was between 30 and 63 kDa, which was larger than that of zein (20 and 24 kDa). The main secondary structure of highland barely prolamins was β-turn helices, while α-helical structures were the main secondary structure in zein. The water holding capacity, thermal stability, emulsifying capacity, and stability of prolamins from highland barley were significantly higher than in zein, while the opposite results were observed for oil absorption capacity between the two. The diameter of fibers prepared using highland barely prolamins was almost six times that of zein, while highland barely prolamins formed ribbon structures instead of fibers. Therefore, the results provide guidance for applications of prolamins from highland barley.

Background: Zein is the major protein in corn and the main byproduct of the starch industry and, therefore, crucial for global agricultural commodities. Its unique fibre-forming properties, which underline its potential as a biodegradable material, have drawn intensified interest from the public, scientists, and industries because of growing concern about environmental risks. As zein electrospun nanofibre has been studied in different research fields, the recent advances in zein electrospun nanofibres in the therapeutic field need re-examination. Scope and approach: This review provides an overview of various methods of modifications (e.g., crosslinking, deamidation and glycosylation on the fibre-forming properties of zein and different electrospun setups (e.g., emulsion and multi-layer electrospinning) in the last decade and reports current applications in the therapeutic field such as controlled release, wound healing, tissue engineering and biosensor. It also discussed the mechanisms of modifications such as electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic interactions, and van der Waals forces. Key findings and conclusions: The biocompatibility, fibre-forming and encapsulation properties of zein make it a potential replacement for traditional synthetic materials. Since specific properties of zein-based materials are acquirable via different modifications and processing, developing an insight into the relationship between functions and microstructure and conformations of the modified zein-based nanofibres along with different electrospun processes could contribute to high-quality zein-based fibrous products. It also discussed the potential limitations and challenges of zein-based nanofibres.

In this work, the high-energy-density plasmas (HEDP) evolved from joule-class-femtosecond-laser-irradiated nanowire-array (NWA) targets were numerically and experimentally studied. The results of particle-in-cell simulations indicate that ions accelerated in the sheath field around the surfaces of the nanowires are eventually confined in a plasma, contributing most to the high energy densities. The protons emitted from the front surfaces of the NWA targets provide rich information about the interactions that occur. We give the electron and ion energy densities for broad target parameter ranges. The ion energy densities from NWA targets were found to be an order of magnitude higher than those from planar targets, and the volume of the HEDP was several-fold greater. At optimal target parameters, 8% of the laser energy can be converted to confined protons, and this results in ion energy densities at the GJ/cm3 level. In the experiments, the measured energy of the emitted protons reached 4 MeV, and the changes in energy with the NWA’s parameters were found to fit the simulation results well. Experimental measurements of neutrons from 2H(d,n)3He fusion with a yield of (24 ± 18) × 106/J from deuterated polyethylene NWA targets also confirmed these results.

Plant protein has been reported to play a key role in the prevention of obesity and associated complications. It is unknown whether pea albumin may exert anit-obesity and obesity-associated metabolic disorders alleviation. Pea albumin was isolated from pea seed (Pisum sativum L.) and determined its functional role for anti-obesity and metabolic disorders alleviation in high fat diet (HFD)-fed mice. Pea albumin administration reduced body weight gain, improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, reduced inflammatory cytokines secretion, and alleviated hepatic steatosis in HFD-fed mice. Interestingly, pea albumin inhibited lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells in vitro and modulated lipid metabolism by upregulating critical proteins implicated in lipolysis and fatty acid oxidation, and downregulating lipogenesis in vivo. Moreover, pea albumin restored gut microbial composition to normal fat diet condition and selectively promoted the growth of beneficial gut bacteria (Akkermansia, Parabacteroides etc.). Collectively, the data demonstrated that pea albumin protects mice from HFD-induced obesity and associated metabolic disorders.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of incorporating different concentrations of flaxseed gum (FG) into acid-induced soy protein isolate (SPI) gels. The investigation focused on assessing the effects of FG on the textural, rheological, and tribological properties of the resultant SPI gels. The results showed that adding a small amount of FG (0.05%) to the SPI gel system increased the storage modulus (G′) and enhanced gelation while improving textural properties including hardness, viscosity, elasticity, and adhesion. Moreover, these gels exhibited strong water-holding capacity, a desirable property in various food products. However, when the concentration was increased to 0.3%, the WHC of the gel decreased, as did the hardness and cohesiveness. The particle size of the gel also increased with increasing concentration. Tribological investigations revealed that at 0.05–0.2% FG addition, the coefficient of friction (μ) of the composite gel was decreased compared to the pure SPI gel. In the sliding speed range of 1–100 mm/s, the coefficient of friction gradually increased with increasing concentration. When the FG concentration was 0.05%, the μ of the gel system was the lowest. In summary, low concentration of FG (0.05%) was found to play an important role in improving the properties of SPI gel, including enhancing textural, rheological, and lubricating properties.

The effective implementation of in situ thermal treatment (ISTT) technologies requires understanding of gas production and migration in heterogenous media. However, investigations of the effects of high permeability contrast on gas formation, accumulation, and migration, as well as its potential effect on the redistribution of dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL), are relatively rare. In this study, electrical resistance heating (ERH) experiments were conducted in a thin sand-packed cell to simulate common yet not well-studied scenarios encountered during ISTT applications, such as coarse lenses surrounded by finer material. Two packing configurations were employed: 2 mm glass beads surrounded by 20/30 silica sand and 20/30 silica sand overlaying 40/50 silica sand. Each experiment contained an emplaced pool of trichloroethene (TCE) within the coarse material. If permeable material or pathways were present between the coarse lens and the upper cell boundary, the gas migrated along these pathways, and local DNAPL redistribution was limited to near the top of the pool before it vaporized. In contrast, if the coarse material was surrounded by finer material and contained a sufficient volume of DNAPL, the gas accumulated inside the coarse lens leading to DNAPL displacement from the lens. For five selected DNAPLs, this volume was estimated to be 0.1% to 0.5% of the total pore volume of the coarse material. The conceptual model developed in this study improves our understanding of this common geological scenario, demonstrating the importance of considering both lower- and higher-permeability material and their effects on multiphase flow during co-boiling, as well as the design of gas extraction systems during ISTT applications.

The traffic scene understanding is the core technology in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), and it is becoming increasingly important for smart or autonomous vehicles. The recent methods for traffic scene understanding, such as Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), Pedestrian Detection, and Vehicle Detection, have three major shortcomings. First, most models are customized for recognizing a specific category of traffic target instead of general traffic targets. Second, as for these recognition modules, the task of traffic scene understanding is to recognize objects rather than make driving suggestions or strategies. Third, numerous independent recognition modules disadvantage to fusing multi-modal information to make a comprehensive decision for driving operation in accordance with complicated traffic scenes. In this paper, we first introduce the image captioning model to alleviate the aforementioned shortcomings. Different from existing methods, our primary idea is to accurately identify all categories of traffic objects and understand traffic scenes by making full use of all information, and making the suggestions or strategy for driving operation in natural language by using Long Short Term Memory network (LSTM) rather than keywords. The proposed solution naturally solves the problems of feature fusion, general object recognition, and low-level semantic understanding. We tested the solution on our created traffic scene image dataset for evaluation of image captioning. Extensive experiments including quantitative and qualitative comparisons demonstrate that the proposed solution can identify more objects and produce higher-level semantic information than the state-of-the-arts.

As consumers’ interest in nature-sourced additives has increased, zein has been treated hydrothermally under alkaline conditions to prepare a nature-sourced emulsifier. The effects of mild hydrothermal–alkaline treatment with different temperatures or alkaline concentrations on the emulsifying properties of zein were investigated. The emulsification activity and stability index of zein hydrolysates increased by 39% and 164%, respectively. The optimal simple stabilized emulsion was uniform and stable against heat treatment up to 90 °C, sodium chloride up to 200 mmol/L, and pH values ranging from 6 to 9. Moreover, it presented excellent storage stability compared to commonly used food emulsifiers. The surface hydrophobicity caused the depolymerization of the tertiary structure of zein and the dissociation of subunits along with exposure of hydrophilic groups. The amino acid composition and circular dichroism results reveal that the treatment dissociated protein subunits and transformed α-helices into anti-parallel β-sheets and random coil. In conclusion, mild hydrothermal–alkaline treatment may well contribute to the extended functional properties of zein as a nature-sourced emulsifier.

In this study, a simple method was used to synthesize novel thermosensitive hydroxybutyl chitosan oligosaccharide (HBCOS) by introducing hydroxybutyl groups to C6–OH of chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) chain. The variation in light scattering demonstrated that HBCOS had good thermosensitive properties and the particle size of HBCOS changed from 2.21–3.58 to 281.23–4,162.40 nm as the temperature increased to a critical temperature (LCST). The LCST of HBCOS (10 mg/ml) decreased from 56.25°C to 40.2°C as the degrees of substitution (DSs) increased from 2.96 to 4.66. The LCST of HBCOS with a DS of 4.66 decreased to 33.5°C and 30°C as the HBCOS and NaCl concentrations increased to 50 mg/ml and 4% (w/v), respectively. Variable-temperature FTIR spectroscopy confirmed that dehydration of hydrophobic chains and the transition of hydrogen bonds were the driving forces for the phase transition of HBCOS. Moreover, HBCOS was not cytotoxic at different concentrations. This work generated a novel thermosensitive HBCOS with tunable thermoresponsive properties and excellent biocompatibility, which may be a potential nanocarrier for the biomedical application.

The application of curcumin (Cur) in fat-free food is limited due to its poor water solubility, stability, and bioaccessibility. In this study, zein-gum arabic-tannic acid (zein-GA-TA) composite particles with high physical stability were fabricated to deliver Cur (ZGT-Cur). Their stability and in vitro release properties were also evaluated. The results showed that the thermal and photochemical stability of Cur was improved after loading into composite particles. Meanwhile, the retention rate of Cur in ZGT-Cur composite particles was enhanced compared with Z-Cur or ZG-Cur particles. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed that the hydrogen bond within the particles was greatly enhanced after the addition of tannic acid (TA). The in vitro antioxidant activity of Cur in ZGT-Cur composite particles was higher in terms of 2,2'-azino-bis (ABTS) (93.64%) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) (50.41%) compared with Z-Cur or ZG-Cur particles. The bioaccessibility of Cur in ZGT-Cur composite particles was 8.97 times higher than that of free Cur. Therefore, the particles designed in this study will broaden the application of Cur in the food industry by improving its stability and bioaccessibility.

The emulsion gels have attracted extensive interests due to their unique physical characters, remarkable stability, and control release properties of flavor and functional components compared to emulsions in liquid. In the current work, whey protein isolate (WPI)/κ-carrageenan (κ-CG) composite emulsion gels were fabricated based on the ultra-high-pressure (UHP) technology, in replacement of the traditional thermal, acid, or enzyme processing. Uniform composite emulsion gels could be fabricated by UHP above 400 MPa with minimum WPI and κ-CG concentrations of 8.0 and 1.0 wt%, respectively. The formation of UHP-induced emulsion gels is mostly attributed to the hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bonding. The emulsion gels with different textures, rheology properties, and microstructures could be fabricated through adjusting the formulations (WPI concentration, κ-CG concentration, and oil phase fraction) as well as processing under different conditions (pressure and time). Afterward, curcumin-loaded emulsion gels were fabricated and subjected to an in vitro simulated gastrointestinal digestion in order to investigate the gastrointestinal fate of curcumin. In vitro simulated digestion results demonstrated that the UHP treatment significantly retarded the release of curcumin but had little impact on the bioaccessibility of curcumin. The results in this work provide useful information for the construction of emulsion gels through a non-thermal process, which showed great potential for the delivery of heat-sensitive bioactive components.

Understanding extensive transcriptional reprogramming events mediated by wounding during the oolong tea manufacturing process is essential for improving oolong tea quality. To improve our comprehension of the architecture of the wounding-induced gene regulatory network, we systematically analyzed the high-resolution transcriptomic and metabolomic data from wounding-treated (after turnover stage) tea leaves at 11 time points over a 220-min period. The results indicated that wounding activates a burst of transcriptional activity within 10 min and that the temporal expression patterns over time could be partitioned into 18 specific clusters with distinct biological processes. The transcription factor (TF) activity linked to the TF binding motif participated in specific biological processes within different clusters. A chronological model of the wounding-induced gene regulatory network provides insight into the dynamic transcriptional regulation event after wounding treatment (the turnover stage). Time series data of wounding-induced volatiles reveal the scientific significance of resting for a while after wounding treatment during the actual manufacturing process of oolong tea. Integrating information-rich expression data with information on volatiles allowed us to identify many high-confidence TFs participating in aroma formation regulation after wounding treatment by using weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). Collectively, our research revealed the complexity of the wounding-induced gene regulatory network and described wounding-mediated dynamic transcriptional reprogramming events, serving as a valuable theoretical basis for the quality formation of oolong tea during the post-harvest manufacturing process.

In order to elucidate the ability of stored product insects to resist high temperature at varying temperature conditions, the influence of different heating rates on the mortality of all life stages of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) was investigated. After acclimation from 28 to 42, 44 and 46 °C at different heating rates (0, 1.25, 2.50, 5.00, and 10.00 °C/h), eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults of T. castaneum were exposed at 50 °C for 0 (as a control), 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 min, respectively. The corrected mortality of T. castaneum was determined after 24 h. The results showed that different exposure times and heating rates had significant effects on the mortality of T. castaneum. The mortality of all life stages of T. castaneum with the same acclimation experience increased significantly with the increasing exposure time, and acclimation improved the heat tolerance of T. castaneum. The mortalities exposed at 50 °C for 30 min of T. castaneum eggs (acclimated to 46 °C at 5.00 °C/h), larvae (acclimated to 44 °C at 2.50 °C/h), pupae (acclimated to 46 °C at 5.00 °C/h), and adults (acclimated to 46 °C at 2.50 °C/h) were 62.50%, 54.44%, 58.89% and 53.33%, respectively, significantly lower than that of corresponding life stages of T. castaneum acclimated at 1.25 and 10.00 °C/h. The present results are in favor of developing an effective heat treatment protocol for pest control.

In this paper, we propose the motion recurring pattern analysis (MRPA) method for the lossless representation of a motion database at the segment level instead of the motion degree of freedom (DOF) level. First, we concatenate all the motions into a long sequence in the motion database, and we discover similar posture paths by building a matching trellis structure based on the randomized k-d tree. Second, horizontal segments of paths are suitably refined, based on a self-organizing map, to obtain the optimized segmentation for maximum compression gains. Third, by using the path as a connection agent, these segments are clustered into a forest of trees. With this forest structure, we obtain the prediction residuals (the differences between the nonroot branches and their parents), and the differences between neighboring residuals are encoded under floating-point compression. Relative to previous lossless compression methods, our approach can achieve a higher compression ratio with comparable decompression time costs.
