1. Large-scale 2D heterostructures from hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks and graphene with distinct Dirac and flat bands

Abstract

Abstract The current strategies for building 2D organic-inorganic heterojunctions involve mostly wet-chemistry processes or exfoliation and transfer, leading to interface contaminations, poor crystallizing, or limited size. Here we show a bottom-up procedure to fabricate 2D large-scale heterostructure with clean interface and highly-crystalline sheets. As a prototypical example, a well-ordered hydrogen-bonded organic framework is self-assembled on the highly-oriented-pyrolytic-graphite substrate. The organic framework adopts a honeycomb lattice with faulted/unfaulted halves in a unit cell, resemble to molecular “graphene”. Interestingly, the topmost layer of substrate is self-lifted by organic framework via strong interlayer coupling, to form effectively a floating organic framework/graphene heterostructure. The individual layer of heterostructure inherits its intrinsic property, exhibiting distinct Dirac bands of graphene and narrow bands of organic framework. Our results demonstrate a promising approach to fabricate 2D organic-inorganic heterostructure with large-scale uniformity and highly-crystalline via the self-lifting effect, which is generally applicable to most of van der Waals materials.

3. Improved Plasticity of Ti-Based Bulk Metallic Glass at Room Temperature by Electroless Thin Nickel Coating

Abstract

By restricting the dilated deformation, surface modification can stimulate multiple shear banding and improve the plasticity of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). Aimed at modifying the surface of BMGs by thin layers, a crystalline Ni coating with ultrafine grains was coated on the surface of a Ti-based BMG by electroless plating. With a thickness of about 10 μm, the prepared thin coating could effectively limit the fast propagation of primary shear bands and stimulate the nucleation of multiple shear bands. As a result, the compression plasticity of the coated Ti-based BMG was improved to about 3.7% from near 0% of the non-coated BMG. Except for a small amount of Ni coating was adhered to the BMG substrate after fracture, most of the coatings were peeled off from the surface. It can be attributed to the abnormal growth of some coarse grains/particles in local region of the coating, which induces a large tensile stress at the interface between the coating and the BMG substrate. It is suggested that, for electroless nickel plating, improving the adhesive bonding strength between the coating and the substrate has a better geometric restriction effect than simply increasing the thickness of the coating.

9. Synthesis of Mesoscale Ordered Two-dimensional Hydrogen-Bond Organic Framework with the Observation of Flat Band

Abstract

Flat bands (FBs), presenting a strongly interacting quantum system have drawn increasing interest recently, as partly reflected by its discovery in twisted bilayer graphene in association with superconductivity. However, experimental realization of topological FBs has been hampered by lacking FB materials, and especially remained elusive in the ideal platform of monolayer materials where they arise from destructive quantum interference as predicted in 2D lattice models. Here, we report experimental synthesis of mesoscale ordered self-assembled monolayer of 2D hydrogen-bond (H-bond) organic frameworks (HOFs) of 1,3,5-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)benzene (THPB) on Au(111) surface and the observation of related topological FB. Its formation, atomic and electronic structures have been characterized with a suite of experimental and theoretical techniques in excellent agreement. High-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) shows mesoscale, highly-ordered and uniform THPB-HOF domains, while angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) highlights a FB over the whole Brillouin zone (BZ). Density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations and analyses reveal that the observed topological FB arises from a hidden electronic breathing-Kagome lattice without atomically breathing bonds. Our findings demonstrate that self-assembly of HOFs provides a viable approach for synthesis of 2D organic topological materials, paving the way to explore many-body quantum states of topological FBs.

Abstract

The intercalation of metal is a promising method for the modulating electronic properties in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). However, there still lacks enough knowledge about how the intercalated atoms directly impact the two-dimensional structural layers and modulate the band structures therein. Taking advantage of X-ray absorption fine structure and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we studied how Cu intercalation influences the host TaSe2 layers in Cu0.03TaSe2 crystals. The intercalated Cu atoms form bonds with Se of the host layers, and there is charge transfer from Cu to Se. By examining the changes of band dispersions, we show that the variation of electronic structures is beyond a simple rigid band model with merely charge doping effect. This work reveals that the unusual change of band dispersions is associated with the formation of bonds between the intercalated metal elements and anion ions in the host layers, and provides a reference for the comprehensive understanding of the electronic structures in intercalated materials.

The measurements are fully corrected for detector effects, and reported differentially in both the jet transverse momentum and jet radius parameter. We compare the measurements to established leading-order Monte Carlo event generators and find that STAR-tuned pythia-6 reproduces the data, while LHC tunes of pythia-8 and herwig-7 do not agree with the data, providing further constraints on parameter tuning. Finally, we observe that softdrop grooming, for which the contribution of wide-angle nonperturbative radiation is suppressed, shifts the jet mass distributions into closer agreement with the partonic jet mass as determined by both pythia-8 and a next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy perturbative QCD calculation. These measurements complement recent LHC measurements in a different kinematic region, as well as establish a baseline for future jet mass measurements in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC.

The Cn and κn are presented as a function of collision energy, centrality and kinematic acceptance in rapidity, y, and transverse momentum, pT. The data were taken during the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program (2010-2017) at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) facility. Abstract

The dangling-bond-free surfaces of van der Waals (vdW) materials make it possible to build ultrathin junctions. Fundamentally, the interfacial phenomena and related optoelectronic properties of vdW junctions are modulated by the interlayer coupling effect. However, the weak interlayer coupling of vdW heterostructures limits the interlayer charge transfer efficiency, resulting in low photoresponsivity. Here, a bilayer MoS2 homogeneous junction is constructed by stacking the as-grown onto the self-healed monolayer MoS2. The homojunction barrier of ∼165 meV is obtained by the electronic structure modulation of defect self-healing. This homojunction reveals the stronger interlayer coupling effect in comparison with vdW heterostructures. This ultrastrong interlayer coupling effect is experimentally verified by Raman spectra and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Transverse momentum (pT) dependence of flow coefficients (v2, v3, and v4) is presented for minimum bias collisions and three different centrality intervals. Number of constituent quark scaling of the measured flow coefficients in U+U collisions is discussed. We also present the ratio of vn scaled by the participant eccentricity (ɛn2) to explore system size dependence and collectivity in U+U collisions. The magnitude of v2/ɛ2 is found to be smaller in U+U collisions than that in central Au+Au collisions contradicting naive eccentricity scaling. Furthermore, the ratios between various flow harmonics (v3/v23/2, v4/v24/2) are studied and compared with hydrodynamic and transport model calculations.

The new inclusive jet data are sensitive to the gluon helicity distribution, Δg(x,Q2), for gluon momentum fractions in the range from x≃0.05 to x≃0.5, while the new dijet data provide further constraints on the x dependence of Δg(x,Q2). The results are in good agreement with previous measurements at s=200 GeV and with recent theoretical evaluations of prior world data. Our new results have better precision and thus strengthen the evidence that Δg(x,Q2) is positive for xg0.05.

Neutral pions are observed in the forward direction relative to the transversely polarized proton beam, in the pseudorapidity region 2.7lηl3.8. Results are presented for π0s observed in the STAR forward meson spectrometer electromagnetic calorimeter in narrow Feynman x (xF) and transverse momentum (pT) bins, spanning the range 0.172.5 GeV/c. It is further observed that the value of AN is significantly larger for events with a large-pT isolated π0 than for events with a nonisolated π0 accompanied by additional jetlike fragments. The nuclear dependence r(A) is similar for isolated and nonisolated π0 events.

The beam energy scan (BES) program at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) was extended to energies below sNN=7.7 GeV in 2015 by successful implementation of the fixed-target mode of operation in the STAR (Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC) experiment. In this mode, ions circulate in one ring of the collider and interact with a stationary target at the entrance of the STAR time projection chamber. The first results for Au+Au collisions at sNN=4.5 GeV are presented, demonstrating good performance of all the relevant detector subsystems in fixed-target mode. Results presented here include directed and elliptic flow of identified hadrons, and radii from pion femtoscopy. The latter, together with recent HADES results, reveal a long-sought peak structure that may be caused by the system evolving through a first-order phase transition from quark-gluon plasma to the hadronic phase. Directed and elliptic flow for pions are presented for the first time at this beam energy. Pion and proton elliptic flow show behavior which hints at constituent quark scaling, and demonstrate that a definitive conclusion will be achievable using the full statistics of the ongoing second phase of BES (BES-II). In particular, BES-II to date has recorded fixed-target data sets with two orders of magnitude more events at each of nine energies between sNN=3.0 and 7.7 GeV.

Abstract

Charge density wave (CDW) is a collective quantum phenomenon in metals and features a wave-like modulation of the conduction electron density. A microscopic understanding and experimental control of this many-body electronic state in atomically thin materials remain hot topics in materials physics. By means of material engineering, we realized a dimensionality and Zr intercalation induced semiconductor-metal phase transition in 1T-ZrX$_2$ (X = Se, Te) ultra-thin films, accompanied by a commensurate 2 $\times$ 2 CDW order. Furthermore, we observed a CDW energy gap up to 22 meV around the Fermi level. Fourier-transformed scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveal that 1T-ZrX$_2$ films exhibit the simplest Fermi surface among the known CDW materials in TMDCs, consisting only of Zr 4d-derived elliptical electron conduction band at the corners of the Brillouin zone., 29 pages, 4 figures, 4 Supplementary notes

The cross sections and their ratios are sensitive to quark and antiquark parton distribution functions. In particular, at leading order, the W cross section ratio is sensitive to the d¯/ū ratio. These measurements were taken at high Q2∼MW2,MZ2 and can serve as input into global analyses to provide constraints on the sea quark distributions. The results presented here combine three STAR datasets from 2011, 2012, and 2013, accumulating an integrated luminosity of 350 pb-1. We also assess the expected impact that our W+/W- cross section ratios will have on various quark distributions, and find sensitivity to the ū-d¯ and d¯/ū distributions.

Abstract

Selective C(sp3) −H activation is of fundamental importance in processing alkane feedstocks to produce high-value-added chemical products. By virtue of an on-surface synthesis strategy, we report selective cascade dehydrogenation of n-alkane molecules under surface constraints, which yields monodispersed all-trans conjugated polyenes with unprecedented length controllability. We are also able to demonstrate the generality of this concept for alkyl-substituted molecules with programmable lengths and diverse functionalities, and more importantly its promising potential in molecular wiring., Direct transformation of n-alkanes and alkyl-substituted derivatives has been achieved under surface constraints to yield conjugated polyenes with programmed length and functionalities.

Abstract

The phenomenon of oxygen incorporation induced superconductivity in iron telluride (Fe1+yTe, with antiferromagnetic (AFM) orders) is intriguing and quite different from the case of FeSe. Until now, the microscopic origin of the induced superconductivity and the role of oxygen are far from clear. Here, by combining in-situ scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) on oxygenated FeTe, we found physically adsorbed O2 molecules crystallized into c(2/3x2) structure as an oxygen overlayer at low temperature, which was vital for superconductivity. The O2 overlayer were not epitaxial on the FeTe lattice, which implied weak O2-FeTe interaction but strong molecular interactions. Energy shift observed in the STS and XPS measurements indicated hole doping effect from the O2 overlayer to the FeTe layer, leading to a superconducting gap of 4.5 meV opened across the Fermi level. Abstract

Two-dimensional honeycomb crystals have inspired intense research interest for their novel properties and great potential in electronics and optoelectronics. Here, through molecular beam epitaxy on SrTiO3(001), we report successful epitaxial growth of metal-rich chalcogenide Fe2Te, a honeycomb-structured film that has no direct bulk analogue, under Te-limited growth conditions. The structural morphology and electronic properties of Fe2Te are explored with scanning tunneling microscopy and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, which reveal electronic bands cross the Fermi level and nearly flat bands. Moreover, we find a weak interfacial interaction between Fe2Te and the underlying substrates, paving a newly developed alternative avenue for honeycomb-based electronic devices., Comment: 12 pages,5 figures

The polarization parameters, λθ, λφ, and λθφ, are measured as a function of transverse momentum (pT) in both the helicity and Collins-Soper (CS) reference frames within pTl10 GeV/c. Except for λθ in the CS frame at the highest measured pT, all three polarization parameters are consistent with 0 in both reference frames without any strong pT dependence. Several model calculations are compared with data, and the one using the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory coupled with nonrelativistic QCD gives the best overall description of the experimental results, even though other models cannot be ruled out due to experimental uncertainties.

Abstract

Symmetry principles play a critical role in formulating the fundamental laws of nature, with a large number of symmetry-protected topological states identified in recent studies of quantum materials. As compelling examples, massless Dirac fermions are jointly protected by the space inversion symmetry $P$ and time reversal symmetry $T$ supplemented by additional crystalline symmetry, while evolving into Weyl fermions when either $P$ or $T$ is broken. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we reveal that massless Dirac fermions are present in a layered FeSn crystal containing antiferromagnetically coupled ferromagnetic Fe kagome layers, where each of the $P$ and $T$ symmetries is individually broken but the combined $PT$ symmetry is preserved. These stable Dirac fermions protected by the combined $PT$ symmetry with additional non-symmorphic $S_{\rm{2z}}$ symmetry can be transformed to either massless/massive Weyl or massive Dirac fermions by breaking the $PT$ or $S_{\rm{2z}}$ symmetry. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments indeed observed the Dirac states in the bulk and two-dimensional Weyl-like states at the surface. The present study substantially enriches our fundamental understanding of the intricate connections between symmetries and topologies of matter, especially with the spin degree of freedom playing a vital role., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The measurements of particle multiplicity distributions have generated considerable interest in understanding the fluctuations of conserved quantum numbers in the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) hadronization regime, in particular near a possible critical point and near the chemical freeze-out. Net-protons and net-kaons have been used as proxies for the net-baryon number and net-strangeness, respectively. We report the measurement of efficiency- and centrality-bin width-corrected cumulant ratios (C2/C1, C3/C2) of net-Λ distributions, in the context of both strangeness and baryon number conservation, as a function of collision energy, centrality, and rapidity. The results are for Au+Au collisions at five beam energies (sNN=19.6, 27, 39, 62.4, and 200 GeV) recorded with the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR). We compare our results to the Poisson and negative binomial (NBD) expectations, as well as to ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) and hadron resonance gas (HRG) model predictions. Both NBD and Poisson baselines agree with data within the statistical and systematic uncertainties. UrQMD describes the measured net-ΛC1 and C3 at 200 GeV reasonably well but deviates from C2, and the deviation increases as a function of collision energy. The ratios of the measured cumulants show no features of critical fluctuations. The chemical freeze-out temperatures extracted from a recent HRG calculation, which was successfully used to describe the net-proton, net-kaon, and net-charge data, indicate Λ freeze-out conditions similar to those of kaons. However, large deviations are found when comparing with temperatures obtained from net-proton fluctuations. The net-Λ cumulants show a weak but finite dependence on the rapidity coverage in the acceptance of the detector, which can be attributed to quantum number conservation.

Abstract

The study of topological materials possessing nontrivial band structures enables exploitation of relativistic physics and development of a spectrum of intriguing physical phenomena. However, previous studies of Weyl physics have been limited exclusively to semimetals. Here, via systematic magnetotransport measurements, two representative topological transport signatures of Weyl physics, the negative longitudinal magnetoresistance and the planar Hall effect, are observed in the elemental semiconductor tellurium. More strikingly, logarithmically periodic oscillations in both the magnetoresistance and Hall data are revealed beyond the quantum limit and found to share similar characteristics with those observed in ZrTe(5) and HfTe(5). The log-periodic oscillations originate from the formation of two-body quasi-bound states formed between Weyl fermions and opposite charge centers, the energies of which constitute a geometric series that matches the general feature of discrete scale invariance (DSI). Our discovery reveals the topological nature of tellurium and further confirms the universality of DSI in topological materials. Moreover, introduction of Weyl physics into semiconductors to develop “Weyl semiconductors” provides an ideal platform for manipulating fundamental Weyl fermionic behaviors and for designing future topological devices.

These correlations were measured for both like-sign and unlike-sign charge combinations and versus the centrality. The correlations of pions and kaons show the expected near-side ({\it i.e.}, at small relative angles) peak resulting from short-range mechanisms. The amplitudes of these short-range correlations decrease with increasing beam energy. However, the proton correlation functions exhibit strong anticorrelations in the near-side region. This behavior is observed for the first time in an A+A collision system. The observed anticorrelation is $p_{T}$-independent and decreases with increasing beam energy and centrality. The experimental results are also compared to the Monte Carlo models UrQMD, Hijing, and AMPT.

Abstract

Weyl semimetal emerges as a new topologically nontrivial phase of matter, hosting low-energy excitations of massless Weyl fermions. Here, we present a comprehensive study of the type-II Weyl semimetal WP2. Transport studies show a butterfly-like magnetoresistance at low temperature, reflecting the anisotropy of the electron Fermi surfaces. The four-lobed feature gradually evolves into a two-lobed one upon increasing temperature, mainly due to the reduced relative contribution of electron Fermi surfaces compared to hole Fermi surfaces for the magnetoresistance. Moreover, angle-dependent Berry phase is further discovered from the quantum oscillations, which is ascribed to the effective manipulation of the extremal Fermi orbits by the magnetic field to feel the nearby topological singularities in the momentum space. The revealed topological characters and anisotropic Fermi surfaces of WP2 substantially enrich the physical properties of Weyl semimetals and hold great promises in topological electronic and Fermitronic device applications., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, accepted by the journal "Chinese Physics Letters"

Abstract

Using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we systematically studied the electronic structures of quasi-one-dimensional (1D) ternary material Ta2NiS5 single crystals. Contrary to its sister compound Ta2NiSe5, which is a candidate material for excitonic insulators, we found that Ta2NiS5 cannot realize the ground state of an excitonic insulator according to temperature-dependent valence band dispersions along the Γ–X direction. In particular, the experimental ARPES data reveal that the electronic structures show strong two-dimensional characteristics along with a considerable in-plane anisotropy indicating evident coupling among the one-dimensional chain structures. Moreover, theoretical band calculations have to be compressed by a factor of about 15% in energy in order to match the experimental band structures, implying that some weak electron correlations are neglected in the band calculations.

Abstract

Magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) offer a combination of topologically nontrivial characteristics and magnetic order and show promise in terms of potentially interesting physical phenomena such as the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect and topological axion insulating states. However, the understanding of their properties and potential applications have been limited due to a lack of suitable candidates for MTIs. Here, we grow two-dimensional single crystals of Mn(SbxBi(1-x))2Te4 bulk and exfoliate them into thin flakes in order to search for intrinsic MTIs. We perform angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, low-temperature transport measurements, and first-principles calculations to investigate the band structure, transport properties, and magnetism of this family of materials, as well as the evolution of their topological properties. We find that there exists an optimized MTI zone in the Mn(SbxBi(1-x))2Te4 phase diagram, which could possibly host a high-temperature QAH phase, offering a promising avenue for new device applications., Available intrinsic magnetic topological insulators are rare. Here, the authors study the electronic and magnetic properties of Mn(SbxBi(1-x))2Te4 bulks and thin flakes, revealing intrinsic magnetic topological insulator phase in the phase diagram.

Abstract

The Λ (Λ[over ¯]) hyperon polarization along the beam direction has been measured in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV, for the first time in heavy-ion collisions. The polarization dependence on the hyperons' emission angle relative to the elliptic flow plane exhibits a second harmonic sine modulation, indicating a quadrupole pattern of the vorticity component along the beam direction, expected due to elliptic flow. The polarization is found to increase in more peripheral collisions, and shows no strong transverse momentum (p_{T}) dependence at p_{T} greater than 1 GeV/c. The magnitude of the signal is about 5 times smaller than those predicted by hydrodynamic and multiphase transport models; the observed phase of the emission angle dependence is also opposite to these model predictions. In contrast, the kinematic vorticity calculations in the blast-wave model tuned to reproduce particle spectra, elliptic flow, and the azimuthal dependence of the Gaussian source radii measured with the Hanbury Brown-Twiss intensity interferometry technique reproduce well the modulation phase measured in the data and capture the centrality and transverse momentum dependence of the polarization signal.

Abstract

We report the first measurement of the inclusive jet and the dijet longitudinal double-spin asymmetries, ALL, at midrapidity in polarized pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy s=510 GeV. The inclusive jet ALL measurement is sensitive to the gluon helicity distribution down to a gluon momentum fraction of x≈0.015, while the dijet measurements, separated into four jet-pair topologies, provide constraints on the x dependence of the gluon polarization. Both results are consistent with previous measurements made at s=200 GeV in the overlapping kinematic region, x>0.05, and show good agreement with predictions from recent next-to-leading order global analyses.

Invariant yields of D0 mesons with transverse momentum pT9GeV/c are reported in various centrality bins (0-10%, 10-20%, 20-40%, 40-60%, and 60-80%). Blast-wave thermal models are used to fit the D0-meson pT spectra to study D0 hadron kinetic freeze-out properties. The average radial flow velocity extracted from the fit is considerably smaller than that of light hadrons (π,K, and p), but comparable to that of hadrons containing multiple strange quarks (φ,Ξ-), indicating that D0 mesons kinetically decouple from the system earlier than light hadrons. The calculated D0 nuclear modification factors reaffirm that charm quarks suffer a large amount of energy loss in the medium, similar to those of light quarks for pTg4GeV/c in central 0-10% Au + Au collisions. At low pT, the nuclear modification factors show a characteristic structure qualitatively consistent with the expectation from model predictions that charm quarks gain sizable collective motion during the medium evolution. The improved measurements are expected to offer new constraints to model calculations and help gain further insights into the hot and dense medium created in these collisions.

Abstract

In 2018, the STAR collaboration collected data from $$_{44}^{96}{\mathrm{Ru}}+_{44}^{96}{\mathrm{Ru}}$$ and $$_{40}^{96}{\mathrm{Zr}}+_{40}^{96}{\mathrm{Zr}}$$ at $$\sqrt{s_\text {NN}}=200$$ GeV to search for the presence of the chiral magnetic effect in collisions of nuclei. The isobar collision species alternated frequently between $$_{44}^{96}{\mathrm{Ru}}+_{44}^{96}{\mathrm{Ru}}$$ and $$_{40}^{96}{\mathrm{Zr}}+_{40}^{96}{\mathrm{Zr}}$$ . In order to conduct blind analyses of studies related to the chiral magnetic effect in these isobar data, STAR developed a three-step blind analysis procedure. Analysts are initially provided a “reference sample” of data, comprised of a mix of events from the two species, the order of which respects time-dependent changes in run conditions. After tuning analysis codes and performing time-dependent quality assurance on the reference sample, analysts are provided a species-blind sample suitable for calculating efficiencies and corrections for individual $$\approx 30$$ -min data-taking runs. For this sample, species-specific information is disguised, but individual output files contain data from a single isobar species. Only run-by-run corrections and code alteration subsequent to these corrections are allowed at this stage. Following these modifications, the “frozen” code is passed over the fully un-blind data, completing the blind analysis. As a check of the feasibility of the blind analysis procedure, analysts completed a “mock data challenge,” analyzing data from $${\mathrm{Au}}+{\mathrm{Au}}$$ collisions at $$\sqrt{s_\text {NN}}=27$$ GeV, collected in 2018. The $${\mathrm{Au}}+{\mathrm{Au}}$$ data were prepared in the same manner intended for the isobar blind data. The details of the blind analysis procedure and results from the mock data challenge are presented.

Abstract

In this letter, measurements of the shared momentum fraction ( z g ) and the groomed jet radius ( R g ), as defined in the SoftDrop algorithm, are reported in p+p collisions at s = 200 GeV collected by the STAR experiment. These substructure observables are differentially measured for jets of varying resolution parameters from R = 0.2 − 0.6 in the transverse momentum range 15 p T , jet 60 GeV/c. These studies show that, in the p T , jet range accessible at s = 200 GeV and with increasing jet resolution parameter and jet transverse momentum, the z g distribution asymptotically converges to the DGLAP splitting kernel for a quark radiating a gluon. The groomed jet radius measurements reflect a momentum-dependent narrowing of the jet structure for jets of a given resolution parameter, i.e., the larger the p T , jet , the narrower the first splitting. For the first time, these fully corrected measurements are compared to Monte Carlo generators with leading order QCD matrix elements and leading log in the parton shower, and to state-of-the-art theoretical calculations at next-to-leading-log accuracy. We observe that PYTHIA 6 with parameters tuned to reproduce RHIC measurements is able to quantitatively describe data, whereas PYTHIA 8 and HERWIG 7, tuned to reproduce LHC data, are unable to provide a simultaneous description of both z g and R g , resulting in opportunities for fine parameter tuning of these models for p+p collisions at RHIC energies. We also find that the theoretical calculations without non-perturbative corrections are able to qualitatively describe the trend in data for jets of large resolution parameters at high p T , jet , but fail at small jet resolution parameters and low jet transverse momenta.

Abstract

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we study electronic structures of a Kagome metal YCr6Ge6. Band dispersions along kz direction are significant, suggesting a remarkable interlayer coupling between neighboring Kagome planes. Comparing ARPES data with first-principles calculations, we find a moderate electron correlation in this material, since band calculations must be compressed in the energy scale to reach an excellent agreement between experimental data and theoretical calculations. Moreover, as indicated by band calculations, there is a flat band in the vicinity of the Fermi level at the Γ–M–K plane in the momentum space, which could be responsible for the unusual transport behavior in YCr6Ge6.

Abstract

A flatband representing a highly degenerate and dispersionless manifold state of electrons may offer unique opportunities for the emergence of exotic quantum phases. To date, definitive experimental demonstrations of flatbands remain to be accomplished in realistic materials. Here, we present the first experimental observation of a striking flatband near the Fermi level in the layered Fe_{3}Sn_{2} crystal consisting of two Fe kagome lattices separated by a Sn spacing layer. The band flatness is attributed to the local destructive interferences of Bloch wave functions within the kagome lattices, as confirmed through theoretical calculations and modelings. We also establish high-temperature ferromagnetic ordering in the system and interpret the observed collective phenomenon as a consequence of the synergetic effect of electron correlation and the peculiar lattice geometry. Specifically, local spin moments formed by intramolecular exchange interaction are ferromagnetically coupled through a unique network of the hexagonal units in the kagome lattice. Our findings have important implications to exploit emergent flat-band physics in special lattice geometries.

48. Flatbands and Emergent Ferromagnetic Ordering in Fe_{3}Sn_{2} Kagome Lattices

Abstract

A flatband representing a highly degenerate and dispersionless manifold state of electrons may offer unique opportunities for the emergence of exotic quantum phases. To date, definitive experimental demonstrations of flatbands remain to be accomplished in realistic materials. Here, we present the first experimental observation of a striking flatband near the Fermi level in the layered Fe_{3}Sn_{2} crystal consisting of two Fe kagome lattices separated by a Sn spacing layer. The band flatness is attributed to the local destructive interferences of Bloch wave functions within the kagome lattices, as confirmed through theoretical calculations and modelings. We also establish high-temperature ferromagnetic ordering in the system and interpret the observed collective phenomenon as a consequence of the synergetic effect of electron correlation and the peculiar lattice geometry. Specifically, local spin moments formed by intramolecular exchange interaction are ferromagnetically coupled through a unique network of the hexagonal units in the kagome lattice. Our findings have important implications to exploit emergent flat-band physics in special lattice geometries.

Abstract

We report the study of a tri-axial vector magnetoresistance (MR) in nonmagnetic (Bi1-xInx)2Se3 nanodevices at the composition of x = 0.08. We show a dumbbell-shaped in-plane negative MR up to room temperature as well as a large out-of-plane positive MR. MR at three directions is about in a -3%: -1%: 225% ratio at 2 K. Through both the thickness and composition-dependent magnetotransport measurements, we show that the in-plane negative MR is due to the topological phase transition enhanced intersurface coupling near the topological critical point. Our devices suggest the great potential for room-temperature spintronic applications, for example, vector magnetic sensors., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures
