Abstract Iron is an essential biomineral in the human body. Here, we describe a subset of iron-loaded cancer-associated fibroblasts, termed as FerroCAFs, that utilize iron to induce immunosuppression in prostate cancer and predict an unfavorable clinical outcome. FerroCAFs secrete myeloid cell-associated proteins, including CCL2, CSF1 and CXCL1, to recruit immunosuppressive myeloid cells. We report the presence of FerroCAFs in prostate cancer from both mice and human, as well as in human lung and ovarian cancers, and identify a conserved cell surface marker, the poliovirus receptor. Mechanistically, the accumulated iron in FerroCAFs is caused by Hmox1-mediated iron release from heme degradation. The intracellular iron activates the Kdm6b, an iron-dependent epigenetic enzyme, to induce an accessible chromatin state and transcription of myeloid cell-associated protein genes. Targeting the FerroCAFs by inhibiting the Hmox1/iron/Kdm6b signaling axis incurs anti-tumor immunity and tumor suppression. Collectively, we report an iron-loaded FerroCAF cluster that drives immunosuppression through an iron-dependent epigenetic reprogramming mechanism and reveal promising therapeutic targets to boost anti-tumor immunity.

Abstract A high quality (Q) factor is essential for enhancing the performance of resonant nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). NEMS resonators based on two-dimensional (2D) materials such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) have high frequency tunability, large dynamic range, and high sensitivity, yet room-temperature Q factors are typically less than 1000. Here, we systematically investigate the effects of device size and surface nonidealities on Q factor by measuring 52 dry-transferred fully clamped circular MoS2 NEMS resonators with diameters ranging from 1 μm to 8 μm, and optimize the Q factor by combining these effects with the strain-modulated dissipation model. We find that Q factor first increases and then decreases with diameter, with an optimized room-temperature Q factor up to 3315 ± 115 for a 2-μm-diameter device. Through extensive characterization and analysis using Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, we demonstrate that surface nonidealities such as wrinkles, residues, and bubbles are especially significant for decreasing Q factor, especially for larger suspended membranes, while resonators with flat and smooth surfaces typically have larger Q factors. To further optimize Q factors, we measure and model Q factor dependence on the gate voltage, showing that smaller DC and radio-frequency (RF) driving voltages always lead to a higher Q factor, consistent with the strain-modulated dissipation model. This optimization of the Q factor delineates a straightforward and promising pathway for designing high-Q 2D NEMS resonators for ultrasensitive transducers, efficient RF communications, and low-power memory and computing.

Abstract The East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) supplies vital rainfall for over one billion people. El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) markedly affects the EASM, but its impacts are more robust following El Niño than La Niña. Here, we show that this asymmetry arises from the asymmetry in ENSO evolution: though most El Niño events last for one year, La Niña events often persist for 2-3 years. In the summers between consecutive La Niña events, the concurrent La Niña opposes the delayed effect of the preceding winter La Niña on the EASM, causing a reduction in the magnitude and coherence of climate anomalies. Results from a large ensemble climate model experiment corroborate and strengthen the observational analysis with an order of magnitude increase in sample size. The apparent asymmetry in the impacts of the ENSO on the EASM can be reduced by considering the concurrent ENSO, in addition to the ENSO state in the preceding winter. This has important implications for seasonal climate forecasts.

Abstract BCL-2 inhibitors such as venetoclax offer therapeutic promise in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and other cancers, but drug resistance poses a significant challenge. It is crucial to understand the mechanisms that regulate venetoclax response. While correlative studies have identified numerous genes linked to venetoclax sensitivity, their direct impact on the drug response remains unclear. In this study, we targeted around 1400 genes upregulated in venetoclax-sensitive primary AML samples and carried out a CRISPR knockout screen to evaluate their direct effects on venetoclax response. Our screen identified the transcription factor ZNF740 as a critical regulator, with its expression consistently predicting venetoclax sensitivity across subtypes of the FAB classification. ZNF740 depletion leads to increased resistance to ventoclax, while its overexpression enhances sensitivity to the drug. Mechanistically, our integrative transcriptomic and genomic analysis identifies NOXA as a direct target of ZNF740, which negatively regulates MCL-1 protein stability. Loss of ZNF740 downregulates NOXA and increases the steady state protein levels of MCL-1 in AML cells. Restoring NOXA expression in ZNF740-depleted cells re-sensitizes AML cells to venetoclax treatment. Furthermore, we demonstrated that dual targeting of MCL-1 and BCL-2 effectively treats ZNF740-deficient AML in vivo. Together, our work systematically elucidates the causal relationship between venetoclax response signature genes and establishes ZNF740 as a novel transcription factor regulating venetoclax sensitivity.

Current cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activating immunotherapy requires a major histocompatibility complex I (MHC-I)-mediated presentation of tumor-associated antigens, which malfunctions in around half of patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Here, we create a LCL161-loaded macrophage membrane decorated nanoparticle (LMN) for immunotherapy of MHC-I-deficient TNBC. SIRPα on the macrophage membrane helps LMNs recognize CD47-expressing cancer cells for targeted delivery of LCL161, which induces the release of high mobility group protein 1 and proinflammatory cytokines from cancer cells. The released cytokines and high mobility group protein 1 activate antitumor immunity by increasing the intratumoral density of the phagocytic macrophage subtype by 15 times and elevating the intratumoral concentration of CTL lymphotoxin by 4.6 folds. LMNs also block CD47-mediated phagocytosis suppression. LMNs inhibit the growth of MHC-I-deficient TNBC tumors, as well as those resistant to combined therapy of anti-PDL1 antibody and albumin-bound paclitaxel, and prolong the survival of animals, during which process CTLs also play important roles. This macrophage membrane-decorated nanoparticle presents a generalizable platform for increasing macrophage-mediated antitumor immunity for effective immunotherapy of MHC-I-deficient cancers.

Abstract This study employs a fixed-effects model to investigate the holiday effect in the cryptocurrency market, using trading data for the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization on Coinmarketcap.com from January 1, 2017 to July 1, 2022. The results indicate that returns on cryptocurrencies increase significantly during Chinese holiday periods. Additionally, we use textual analysis to construct an investor sentiment indicator and find that positive investor sentiment boosts cryptocurrency market returns. However, when positive investor sentiment prevails in the cryptocurrency market, the holiday effect weakens, implying that positive investor sentiment attenuates the holiday effect. Robustness tests based on the Bitcoin market generate consistent results. Moreover, this study explores the mechanisms underlying the cryptocurrency holiday effect and examines the impact of epidemic transmission risk and heterogeneity characteristics on this phenomenon. These findings offer novel insights into the impact of Chinese statutory holidays on the cryptocurrency market and illuminate the role of investor sentiment in this market.

Summary: Generative design of promoters has enhanced the efficiency of de novo creation of functional sequences. Though several deep generative models have been employed in biological sequence generation, including variational autoencoder (VAE) or Wasserstein generative adversarial network (WGAN), these models might struggle with mode collapse and low sample diversity. In this study, we introduce the multinomial diffusion model (MDM) for promoter sequence design and propose a structured set of criteria for effectively comparing the performance of generative models. In silico experiments demonstrate that MDM outperforms existing generative AI approaches. MDM demonstrates superior performance in various computational evaluations, remains robust during the training process, and exhibits a strong ability in capturing weak signals. In addition, we experimentally validated that the majority of our model designed promoters have expression activities in vivo, indicating the practicality and potential of MDM for bioengineering.

Macroautophagy/autophagy is an intracellular degradation pathway that has an important effect on both healthy and diseased pancreases. It protects the structure and function of the pancreas by maintaining organelle homeostasis and removing damaged organelles. A variety of pancreas-related diseases, such as diabetes, pancreatitis, and pancreatic cancer, are closely associated with autophagy. Genetic studies that address autophagy confirm this view. Loss of autophagy homeostasis (lack or overactivation) can lead to a series of adverse reactions, such as oxidative accumulation, increased inflammation, and cell death. There is growing evidence that stimulating or inhibiting autophagy is a potential therapeutic strategy for various pancreatic diseases. In this review, we discuss the multiple roles of autophagy in physiological and pathological conditions of the pancreas, including its role as a protective or pathogenic factor.

Abstract Background To introduce the surgical technique and our team’s extensive experience with tunnel method in laparoscopic adrenalectomy. Methods From July 2019 to June 2022, we independently designed and conducted 83 cases of " Tunnel Method Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy,” a prospective study. There were 45 male and 38 female patients, ages ranged from 25 to 73 years(mean: 44.6 years).The cases included 59 adrenal cortical adenomas, 9 pheochromocytomas, 6 cysts, 4 myelolipomas, 1 ganglioneuroma, and 4 cases of adrenal cortical hyperplasia. In terms of anatomical location, there were 39 cases on the left side, 42 on the right side, and 2 bilateral cases. Tumor diameters ranged from 0.6 to 5.9 cm(mean: 2.9 cm). Utilizing ultrasound monitoring, percutaneous puncture was made either directly to the target organ or its vicinity, and the puncture path was manually marked. Then, under the direct view of a single-port single-channel laparoscope, the path to the target organ in the retroperitoneum or its vicinity was further delineated and separated. This approach allowed for the insertion of the laparoscope and surgical instruments through the affected adrenal gland, thereby separating the surface of the target organ to create sufficient operational space for the adrenalectomy. Results All 83 surgeries were successfully completed. A breakdown of the surgical approach reveals that 51 surgeries were done using one puncture hole, 25 with two puncture holes, and 7 with three puncture holes. The operation time ranged from 31 to 105 min (mean: 47 min), with a blood loss of 10 to 220mL (mean: 40 mL). Notably, there were no conversions to open surgery and no intraoperative complications. Postoperative follow-up ranged from 6 to 28 months, during which after re-examination using ultrasound, CT, and other imaging methods, there were no recurrences or other complications detected. Conclusions The completion of the tunnel method laparoscopic adrenalectomy represents a breakthrough, transitioning from the traditional step-by-step separation of retroperitoneal tissues to reach the target organ in conventional retroperitoneoscopic surgery. This method directly accesses the target organ, substantially reducing the damage and complications associated with tissue separation in retroperitoneoscopic surgery, As a result, it provides a new option for minimally invasive surgery of retroperitoneal organs and introduces innovative concepts to retroperitoneoscopic surgery.

Abstract Arising from the extreme/saddle point in electronic bands, Van Hove singularity (VHS) manifests divergent density of states (DOS) and induces various new states of matter such as unconventional superconductivity. VHS is believed to exist in one and two dimensions, but rarely found in three dimension (3D). Here, we report the discovery of 3D VHS in a topological magnet EuCd2As2 by magneto-infrared spectroscopy. External magnetic fields effectively control the exchange interaction in EuCd2As2, and shift 3D Weyl bands continuously, leading to the modification of Fermi velocity and energy dispersion. Above the critical field, the 3D VHS forms and is evidenced by the abrupt emergence of inter-band transitions, which can be quantitatively described by the minimal model of Weyl semimetals. Three additional optical transitions are further predicted theoretically and verified in magneto-near-infrared spectra. Our results pave the way to exploring VHS in 3D systems and uncovering the coordination between electronic correlation and the topological phase.

Abstract Background Studies on the factors affecting vault after posterior chamber phakic Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) have been carried out, but most of them are single-centered and subjective selections of parameters. The present study aimed to systematically analyze the factors for vault. Methods A systematic review of case series, case-control, and cohort studies derived from the articles published in PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, CBM, Wanfang and VIP, as well as ClinicalTrials, which were conducted to search for studies on factors of vault using four core terms: phakic intraocular lenses, vault, risk factor and observational study, from January 01, 1997, to February 20, 2023. The included studies were meta-analyzed quantitatively and described qualitatively. Subsequently, meta-regression and subgroup analysis were used. Results We identified 13 studies (1,607 subjects), and 14 factors were considered. Meta-analysis showed that anterior chamber depth (ACD), horizontal corneal white-to-white (hWTW), ICL-size, and age are dual effects of the abnormal vaults; anterior chamber volume (ACV) and lens thickness (LT) are a one-way effect; while axial length (AL), ICL- spherical equivalent (ICL-SE) and Km are insignificant. In addition, descriptive analysis of anterior chamber angle (ACA), horizontal sulcus to sulcus (hSTS), ciliary processes height (T value), crystalline lens rise (CLR), and gender showed that all factors except gender tend to have significant effects on vault. Sensitivity analysis showed stable combined results. Country and design respectively affect the heterogeneity in ACD and ICL-size at low vault, while design affects the heterogeneity in ACD at high vault. No publication bias exists. Conclusions Vault after ICL is related to multiple factors, especially anterior segmental biologic parameters, and they are weighted differently. We hope to provide a reference for the selection and adjustment of ICL.

Given the escalating potential risk associated with X-ray radiation exposure to patients, scholars have been dedicated to investigating advanced algorithms for low-dose CT (LDCT) imaging. The utilization of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) has gained significant traction in the field of LDCT denoising research over the past few years, owing to its notable performance advantages. However, variations in the distribution intensity of noise and artifacts in the LDCT image can compromise the robustness and denoising performance of GAN. In this paper, we propose a scale-sensitive generative adversarial network to enhance the robustness of GAN used in LDCT denoising. Our proposed network incorporates an error feedback pyramid generator to improve the denoising network’s sensitivity towards noise and artifacts present in LDCT images by performing feature extraction and noise reduction at different scales. Additionally, we introduce a multi-scale residual discriminator with a wider receptive field and stronger feature extraction ability to enhance the discrimination between true and false samples. Furthermore, specific constraints are incorporated into the loss functions based on the network structure, thereby enhancing the effect of adversarial training between the error feedback pyramid generator and multi-scale residual discriminator while improving the performance of the denoising network. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed network outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of artifact suppression, structural preservation, and model generalization capability for LDCT denoising.

Density Peak Clustering (DPC) is known for its rapid identification of cluster centers and successful clustering tasks. However, traditional DPC encounters several issues, which include simplifications in local density and distance metrics, a non-robust single-allocation strategy and limited fault tolerance. To address these challenges, this study introduces an innovative density peak clustering algorithm, named Graph Distance and Adaptive K-Nearest Neighbors Selection-Based Density Peak Clustering (GAK-DPC). Our goal with the approach is to enhance the algorithm’s adaptability to non-linear and complex data structures. We achieve this by replacing the traditional Euclidean distance with graph distance. Additionally, we redefine the method for computing local density based on information from K-nearest neighbor data points. By introducing the concept of natural neighbors, the neighborhood radius r is obtained when all instances in the dataset have at least one natural neighbor. Then for the current data point, the number of data points falling within a circle centered on it with radius r is counted as the K-value of that data point. Thus, we achieve the adaptive selection of the K-value. This adaptive K-value strategy takes into account the dataset’s characteristics and inter-point neighbor relationships, which enhances the algorithm’s adaptability and robustness. Finally, we optimize the secondary allocation strategy for sample points to improve the algorithm’s fault tolerance. By conducting comparisons with traditional clustering algorithms on UCI datasets and synthetic datasets, we demonstrate the effectiveness of GAK-DPC.

Tomato fruit ripening is an elaborate genetic trait correlating with significant changes at physiological and biochemical levels. Sugar metabolism plays an important role in this highly orchestrated process and ultimately determines the quality and nutritional value of fruit. However, the mode of molecular regulation is not well understood. Galactinoal-sucrose galactosyltransferase (GSGT), a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFOs), can transfer the galactose unit from 1-α-D-galactosyl-myo-inositol to sucrose and yield raffinose, or catalyze the reverse reaction. In the present study, the expression of SlGSGT2 was decreased by Potato Virus X (PVX)-mediated gene silencing, which led to an unripe phenotype in tomato fruit. The physiological and biochemical changes induced by SlGSGT2 silencing suggested that the process of fruit ripening was delayed as well. SlGSGT2 silencing also led to significant changes in gene expression levels associated with ethylene production, pigment accumulation, and ripening-associated transcription factors (TFs). In addition, the interaction between SlGSGT2 and SlSPL-CNR indicated a possible regulatory mechanism via ripening-related TFs. These findings would contribute to illustrating the biological functions of GSGT2 in tomato fruit ripening and quality forming.

BackgroundIntestinal microbiota have been demonstrated to be involved in the development of NAFLD, while the relationship between the severity of NAFLD and intestinal microbiota is still not fully elucidated. Sheng-Jiang Powder (SJP) showed exact efficacy in treating SFL and great potential in regulating intestinal microbiota, but the effects need to be further addressed in NASH and liver fibrosis.ObjectivesTo investigate the differences in intestinal microbiota of NAFLD with different severity and the effect of SJP on liver damage and intestinal microbiota.DesignNAFLD mice models with different severity were induced by high-fat diet (HFD) or choline-deficient, L-amino acid-defined high-fat diet (CDAHFD) feeding and then treated with SJP/normal saline.MethodsBiochemical blood tests, H&E/Masson/Oil Red O/IHC staining, Western blot, and 16SrDNA sequencing were performed to explore intestinal microbiota alteration in different NAFLD models and the effect of SJP on liver damage and intestinal microbiota.ResultsIntestinal microbiota alteration was detected in all NAFLD mice. SJP induced increased expression of Pparγ and alleviated liver lipid deposition in all NAFLD mice. Microbiome analysis revealed obvious changes in intestinal microbiota composition, while SJP significantly elevated the relative abundance of Roseburia and Akkermansia, which were demonstrated to be beneficial for improving inflammation and intestinal barrier function.ConclusionOur results demonstrated that SJP was effective in improving lipid metabolism in NAFLD mice, especially in mice with SFL. The potential mechanism may be associated with the regulation of intestinal microbiota.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic inflammatory autoimmune disease that severely impacts physical and mental health. Autophagy is a cellular process involving the degradation of cellular components in lysosomes. However, from a bioinformatics perspective, autophagy-related genes have not been comprehensively elucidated in rheumatoid arthritis. Methods: In this study, we performed differential analysis of autophagy-related genes in rheumatoid arthritis patients using the GSE93272 dataset from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Marker genes were screened by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator. Based on marker genes, we used unsupervised cluster analysis to elaborate different autophagy clusters, and further identified modules strongly associated with rheumatoid arthritis by weighted gene co-expression network analysis. In addition, we constructed four machine learning models, random forest model, support vector machine model, generalized linear model and extreme gradient boosting based on marker genes, and based on the optimal machine learning model, a nomogram model was constructed for distinguishing between normal individuals and rheumatoid arthritis patients. Finally, five external independent rheumatoid arthritis datasets were used for the validation of our results. Results: The results showed that autophagy-related genes had significant expression differences between normal individuals and osteoarthritis patients. Through least absolute shrinkage and selection operator screening, we identified 31 marker genes and found that they exhibited significant synergistic or antagonistic effects in rheumatoid arthritis, and immune cell infiltration analysis revealed significant changes in immune cell abundance. Subsequently, we elaborated different autophagy clusters (cluster 1 and cluster 2) using unsupervised cluster analysis. Next, further by weighted gene co-expression network analysis, we identified a brown module strongly associated with rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, we constructed a nomogram model for five marker genes (CDKN2A, TP53, ATG16L2, FKBP1A, and GABARAPL1) based on a generalized linear model (area under the curve = 1.000), and the predictive efficiency and accuracy of this nomogram model were demonstrated in the calibration curves, the decision curves and the five external independent datasets were validated. Conclusion: This study identified marker autophagy-related genes in rheumatoid arthritis and analyzed their impact on the disease, providing new perspectives for understanding the role of autophagy-related genes in rheumatoid arthritis and providing new directions for its individualized treatment.

Abstract Designing promoters with desirable properties is essential in synthetic biology. Human experts are skilled at identifying strong explicit patterns in small samples, while deep learning models excel at detecting implicit weak patterns in large datasets. Biologists have described the sequence patterns of promoters via transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs). However, the flanking sequences of cis-regulatory elements, have long been overlooked and often arbitrarily decided in promoter design. To address this limitation, we introduce DeepSEED, an AI-aided framework that efficiently designs synthetic promoters by combining expert knowledge with deep learning techniques. DeepSEED has demonstrated success in improving the properties of Escherichia coli constitutive, IPTG-inducible, and mammalian cell doxycycline (Dox)-inducible promoters. Furthermore, our results show that DeepSEED captures the implicit features in flanking sequences, such as k-mer frequencies and DNA shape features, which are crucial for determining promoter properties.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the molecular mechanism of triptolide in the treatment of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) via network pharmacology and experimental validation.Methods: The network pharmacological method was used to predict the key targets, detect the signal pathways for the treatment of OSCC, and screen the critical components and targets for molecular docking. Predicted targets were validated in cellular and xenograft mouse model.Results: In this study, we predicted action on 17 relevant targets of OSCC by network pharmacology. PPI network demonstrated that Jun, MAPK8, TP53, STAT3, VEGFA, IL2, CXCR4, PTGS2, IL4 might be the critical targets of triptolide in the treatment of OSCC. These potential targets are mainly closely related to JAK-STAT and MAPK signaling pathways. The analysis of molecular docking showed that triptolide has high affinity with Jun, MAPK8 and TP53. Triptolide can suppress the growth of OSCC cells and xenograft mice tumor, and downregulate the expression of Jun, MAPK8, TP53, STAT3, VEGFA, IL2, CXCR4, PTGS2 to achieve the therapeutic effect of OSCC.Conclusion: Through network pharmacological methods and experimental studies, we predicted and validated the potential targets and related pathways of triptolide for OSCC treatment. The results suggest that triptolide can inhibit the growth of OSCC via several key targets.

ObjectiveComparing the specific advantages and surgical outcomes of each step in radical prostatectomy under 3D vs. 2D laparoscopy.MethodsFrom October 2019 to January 2023, our urology department treated 63 cases of prostate cancer, using an odd-even arrangement method to divide into two groups. This is a non-randomized prospective study, with 33 odd-numbered cases in the 3D group and 30 even-numbered cases in the 2D group. The surgery was divided into four steps: (1) establishing an extraperitoneal pneumoperitoneum (2) pelvic lymph node dissection (3)excising the prostate (4)bladder-urethral anastomosis, comparing the two groups in terms of surgical time, blood loss, and relevant postoperative indicators for each step.ResultsAll 63 surgeries were successfully completed without any conversions. Comparing 3D and 2D laparoscopy groups, there were statistically significant differences in total surgery time (123.5 ± 15.3 min vs. 145.6 ± 17.2 min, P 0.05). In terms of urinary incontinence rates, the 3D laparoscopy group was lower than the 2D group, and in terms of preserving erectile function, the 3D group was higher than the 2D group, with significant statistical differences (P 0.05).ConclusionCompared to traditional 2D laparoscopy, 3D laparoscopy can shorten the operation time and reduce bleeding in the steps of prostate excision and bladder-urethral anastomosis, but there was no significant difference in peri-operative outcomes.

Hierarchical buckling is a novel phenomenon observed in elastic fibers subjected to transverse confinement; however, the deformation mechanisms and modal transitions of this unique phenomenon remain to be elucidated. This paper investigates the hierarchical buckling of elastic fibers with elliptical (circular) cross-sections under transverse confinement through analytical derivations and numerical simulations. Various magnitudes of hierarchical buckling of fibers are observed with the variation of the controlled elastic matrix stiffness. An analytical solution is first derived for the fiber’s buckling phenomenon, and the hierarchical buckling is accomplished through the superposition of buckling at various modes. The theoretical results are validated against the finite element simulations with good agreement. It is demonstrated from the parametric results that the hierarchical buckling phenomenon is primarily influenced by the stiffness of the external transverse confinement (matrix), which is defined as a dimensionless parameter. It is thus illustrated from the computational results that the buckling of elastic fibers within a solid or fluid matrix can be controlled and customized. The present work provides theoretical guidance for the application of elastic fibers in stretchable conductor fibers and flexible electronic devices.

Ca-Cl brine is a highly mineralized special water body occurring in oceanic ridges or basins. The deep part of the western Qaidam Basin is rich in Ca-Cl brine, which is essential for the formation of (MgSO4-deficient) potash deposits. Previous studies on this type of brine in the Qaidam Basin focused on its source tracing, but different carriers led to different conclusions. Moreover, the genesis of Ca-Cl brines in inland basins still remains unclear. In essence, a solid understanding of the relatively abundant Ca sources for the formation of Ca-Cl brines in inland basins has not been reached. In addition, a metallogenic model for this type of brine has not yet been established. Through hydrochemical analysis as well as Band Li isotope tracing, this study clarified that the main elements (Na and Cl) in these Ca-Cl brines mainly originated from the dissolution of existing evaporites in the inner basin. Further, trace elements in Ca-Cl brines (such as Band Li) mainly originated from lixiviation; atmospheric rainfall infiltrated and interacted with ore-rich mother rocks along the basin-margin fracture system under suitable temperature-pressure conditions; alternatively, they may have originated from mixing with magmatic hydrothermal fluids. This study showed that Ca-Cl brines in the western part of the Qaidam Basin have a typical “binary structure” in terms of their sources. In addition, the sources of Ca in Ca-Cl brines were further discussed based on B and Li isotope data, thus exploring a new genesis of Ca-Cl brines in inland basins. Finally, by integrating the above findings, an ore-forming model of this type of water body in the western part of the Qaidam Basin is proposed. This study is valuable for understanding the genesis mechanism of Ca-Cl brines in inland basins, and also has practical significance for the prediction, exploration, and evaluation of this type of brine resource.

Aim: This study aimed to describe the prevalence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of hypertensive heart disease (HHD) at the global, regional, and national levels and analyze epidemiological trends. Method: We extracted global estimates of prevalence, deaths, and DALYs related to HHD in 204 countries and regions from the 2019 Global Burden of Diseases Study. Average annual percent change (AAPC) was calculated to represent temporal trends. Joinpoint regression models were used to analyze time trends from 1990 to 2019. Finally, the decomposition analysis showed the driving factors of burden changes. Results: From 1990 to 2019, the global prevalence of HHD cases increased by 138 %, reaching 18,598,025 cases (95 % uncertainty interval [UI]: 13,544,365–24,898,411). DALYs also rose by 154 %, reaching 21,508,002 (95 % UI, 16,400,051–23,899,879). The death rate increased to 14.95 (95 % UI, 11.11–16.52) per 100,000 people. Of the five sociodemographic index (SDI) regions, the prevalence rate related to HHD was the highest in the high-middle SDI region. In contrast, the death and DALY rate related to HHD were the highest in the middle SDI region. In other regions, the prevalence rate was the highest in East Asia (548.87 per 100,000 people; 95 % UI, 395.40–747.83), and the death rate was the highest in Central Europe (42.64 per 100,000 people; 95 % UI, 30.58–49.38). At the national level, the Cook Islands had the highest prevalence rate for HHD (703.08 per 100,000 people; 95 % UI, 532.87–920.72), Bulgaria had the highest death rate (75.08 per 100,000 people; 95 % UI, 46.38–92.81), and Afghanistan had the highest DALY rate (1374.12 per 100,000 people; 95 % UI, 467.17–2020.70). High body mass index, a diet high in sodium, alcohol use, lead exposure, high temperature, and low temperature were identified as risk factors for death and DALYs related to HHD in 2019. Aging and population growth were the major drivers of prevalence, death, and DALYs. Transients in hydraulic systems are normally simulated by one-dimensional (1D) method of characteristics (MOC). When local three-dimensional (3D) flow patterns have crucial impacts on the hydraulic system characteristics, 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation should be incorporated. Since simulating an entire long system by the 3D CFD method is unrealistic, we have proposed several 1D-3D coupled simulation methods. However, the coupled methods are difficult to apply and popularise because most CFD codes are inaccessible and implementation details are unclear. Consequently, we utilised the open source toolbox OpenFOAM to develop a 1D-3D coupled simulation method and proved its feasibility by applying it to analysing practical problems. This paper describes the implementations of water compressibility, 1D-3D coupling, gas-liquid flow simulation, and dynamic mesh; shows their verifications of accuracy by benchmark cases; demonstrates the simulations of the closing and opening processes of a 194 km long water conveyance system. The gas-liquid flow patterns in the gate chamber and the maximum/minimum water head envelopes along the tunnels, which support the design optimisation of the project, are presented. It is shown that the method is computationally efficient and accurate, and can be applied to hydraulic transient analyses for water conveyance systems, pumped-storage power stations, etc.

The electric scroll compressor is driven by a built-in electric motor that rotates the scroll disk. It is known for its simple structure, adjustability, and high efficiency, making it highly promising for various applications. This paper reviews the current application and research status of electric scroll compressors. It covers topics such as the optimal design of scroll compressor profiles, scroll disk leakage sealing, and computer simulation optimization design methods. Additionally, the progress and development trends of vapor-injection scroll compressors (SCVIs) are discussed. This paper also presents the latest research progress on the application of the new refrigerant CO2 in electric scroll compressors, along with its latest applications that align with sustainable development requirements. Finally, this paper concludes with recommendations for the application of electric scroll compressors and suggests future directions for research.

Penicillium digitatum is a major postharvest pathogen that threatens the global citrus fruit industry and causes great economic losses annually. In the present study, inhibitory properties of cinnamon bark oil (CBO) against P. digitatum in vitro were investigated. Results indicated that 0.03% CBO could efficiently inhibit the spore germination, germ tube elongation, mycelial growth, colonial expansion and conidial accumulation of P. digitatum. The results of fluorescein diacetate (FDA) and MitoTraker Orange (MTO) staining also proved the suppression effects of CBO against P. digitatum. Meanwhile, CBO could inhibit green mold rots induced by P. digitatum in citrus fruit when the working concentration of CBO exceeded 0.06%. In addition, the expressions of 12 genes critical for the growth and virulence of P. digitatum were also significantly regulated under CBO stress. Through a transcriptomic analysis, a total of 1802 common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were detected in P. digitatum after 4 h and 8 h of CBO treatment. Most of the DEG products were associated with carbohydrate, amino acid and lipid metabolism. They directly or indirectly led to the disturbance of the membrane and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Our results may deepen the understanding of antifungal properties of CBO against P. digitatum and provide the theoretical foundation to uncover the antifungal mechanism of CBO at the molecular level.

The HSE-12 strain isolated from peanut rhizosphere soil was identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens by observation of phenotypic characteristics, physiological and biochemical tests, 16S rDNA and gyrB gene sequencing. In vitro experiments showed that the strain possessed biocontrol activity against a variety of pathogens including Sclerotium rolfsii. The strain has the ability to produce hydrolytic enzymes, as well as volatile organic compounds with antagonistic and probiotic effects such as ethyleneglycol and 2,3-butanediol. In addition, HSE-12 showed potassium solubilizing (10.54 ± 0.19 mg/L), phosphorus solubilization (168.34 ± 8.06 mg/L) and nitrogen fixation (17.35 ± 2.34 mg/g) abilities, and was able to secrete siderophores [(Ar-A)/Ar × 100%: 56%] which promoted plant growth. A three-phase to single-phase modular multilevel converter based advanced co-phase traction power supply (MMC-ACTPS) system is an effective structure to address the concerns of phase splitting and poor power quality of the conventional electrified railway. Due to the large number of MMCACTPS system modules, I/O resources and computing speed have high requirements on processors. Moreover, the module capacitor balance is challenging because the sorting time is too long when the traditional sorting algorithm for voltage balance is used. To solve the above issues, a digital implementation scheme of flexible power control strategy for three-phase to single-phase MMC-ACTPS system based on field programmable gate array (FPGA), which has sufficient I/O resources, has been proposed. Due to the parallel execution characteristics of the FPGA, the execution time of the controller and the modulator can be greatly reduced compared with a digital signal processor (DSP) + FPGA or DSpace. In addition, an improved sorting algorithm is proposed to reduce the sorting time and the implementation steps are analyzed. Finally, simulation and experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed control strategy.

Rehabilitation movement assessment often requires patients to wear expensive and inconvenient sensors or optical markers. To address this issue, we propose a non-contact and real-time approach using a lightweight pose detection algorithm–Sports Rehabilitation-Pose (SR-Pose), and a depth camera for accurate assessment of rehabilitation movement. Our approach utilizes an E-Shufflenet network to extract underlying features of the target, a RLE-Decoder module to directly regress the coordinate values of 16 key points, and a Weight Fusion Unit (WFU) module to output optimal human posture detection results. By combining the detected human pose information with depth information, we accurately calculate the angle between each joint in three-dimensional space. Furthermore, we apply the DTW algorithm to solve the distance measurement and matching problem of video sequences with different lengths in rehabilitation evaluation tasks. Experimental results show that our method can detect human joint nodes with an average detection speed of 14.32ms and an average detection accuracy for pose of 91.2%, demonstrating its computational efficiency and effectiveness for practical application. Our proposed approach provides a low-cost and user-friendly alternative to traditional sensor-based methods, making it a promising solution for rehabilitation movement assessment.

Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) can effectively reduce radiation exposure in patients. However, with such dose reductions, large increases in speckled noise and streak artifacts occur, resulting in seriously degraded reconstructed images. The non-local means (NLM) method has shown potential for improving the quality of LDCT images. In the NLM method, similar blocks are obtained using fixed directions over a fixed range. However, the denoising performance of this method is limited. In this paper, a region-adaptive NLM method is proposed for LDCT image denoising. In the proposed method, pixels are classified into different regions according to the edge information of the image. Based on the classification results, the adaptive searching window, block size and filter smoothing parameter could be modified in different regions. Furthermore, the candidate pixels in the searching window could be filtered based on the classification results. In addition, the filter parameter could be adjusted adaptively based on intuitionistic fuzzy divergence (IFD). The experimental results showed that the proposed method performed better in LDCT image denoising than several of the related denoising methods in terms of numerical results and visual quality.

The microstructure and corrosion property of super 13Cr martensitic stainless steel (S13CrMSS) processed by quenching, one-step tempering and two-step tempering were investigated by XRD, SEM, EBSD and TEM-EDS analysis. It has been found that volume fraction of the reversed austenite in the sample treated by two-step tempering treatment was 13.5 vol. % up to the maximum. The reversed austenite almost always nucleated and distributed in martensite laths boundary during tempering and the diffusion of Ni, Mn and C promoted its growth. Enrichment of such elements as Ni, Mn, C and the ultrafine size of the reversed austenite were considered to be the main factor that accounted for the stability of the reversed austenite. At the same time, martensite and reversed austenite satisfy the (1 1¯ 1)γ // (011)α' and [011]γ // [1¯1¯ 1]α' Kurdjumov-Sachs (K–S) orientation relationship. Potentiodynamic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicated that two-step tempered specimen exhibited a higher pitting potential, lower corrosion current density, thicker passivation film and superior pitting resistance than the quenching specimen (without reversed austenite) as well as one-step tempering specimen (3.6 vol.%). It has been confirmed that the reversed austenite has a beneficial effect on the corrosion property of S13CrMSS.

Metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive type of breast cancer. Combination of systemic chemotherapy and immune checkpoint blockade is effective but of limited benefit due to insufficient intratumoral infiltration of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and the accumulation of immunosuppressive cells. Herein, we designed a lenvatinib- and vadimezan-loaded synthetic high-density lipoprotein (LV-sHDL) for combinational immunochemotherapy of metastatic TNBC. The LV-sHDL targeted scavenger receptor class B type 1-overexpressing 4T1 cells in the tumor after intravenous injection. The multitargeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) lenvatinib induced immunogenic cell death of the cancer cells, and the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) agonist vadimezan triggered local inflammation to facilitate dendritic cell maturation and antitumor macrophage differentiation, which synergistically improved the intratumoral infiltration of total and active CTLs by 33- and 13-fold, respectively. LV-sHDL inhibited the growth of orthotopic 4T1 tumors, reduced pulmonary metastasis, and prolonged the survival of animals. The efficacy could be further improved when LV-sHDL was used in combination with antibody against programmed cell death ligand 1. This study highlights the combination use of multitargeted TKI and STING agonist a promising treatment for metastatic TNBC.

Abstract Background Acute pancreatitis is the sudden inflammation of the pancreas. Severe cases of acute pancreatitis are potentially fatal and have no specific treatment available. Premature trypsinogen activation could initiate acute pancreatitis. However, the mechanism underlying premature trypsinogen activation is not fully understood. Methods In this research, a primary pancreatic acinar cell or mouse acute pancreatitis model was constructed. The effect of acid ceramidase (ASAH1), which is responsible for sphingosine production, was investigated in trypsinogen activation in vitro and in vivo. Meanwhile, the proteins regulating ASAH1 or binding to sphingosine were also detected by co-immunoprecipitation followed by mass spectrometry. Results The results showed that ASAH1 increased in acute pancreatitis. Increased ASAH1 promoted the activation of trypsinogen and cathepsin B. On the contrary, ASAH1 downregulation inhibited trypsinogen and cathepsin B. Meanwhile, ASAH1 regulated the activity of trypsin and cathepsin B through sphingosine. Additionally, E3 ligase Mind bomb homolog 1 (MIB1) decreased in acute pancreatitis resulting in the decreased binding between MIB1 and ASAH1. Exogenous MIB1 diminished the elevation in trypsin activity induced by acute pancreatitis inducer. ASAH1 increased owing to the inhibition of the proteasome degradation by MIB1. In acute pancreatitis, sphingosine was found to bind to pyruvate kinase. Pyruvate kinase activation could reduce trypsinogen activation and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production induced by sphingosine. Conclusions In conclusion, during the process of acute pancreatitis, MIB1 downregulation led to ASAH1 upregulation, resulting in pyruvate kinase inhibition, followed by trypsinogen activation.

Abstract Great attention is paid to the role of androgen receptor (AR) as a central transcriptional factor in driving the growth of prostate cancer (PCa) epithelial cells. However, the understanding of the role of androgen in PCa‐infiltrated immune cells and the impact of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), the first‐line treatment for advanced PCa, on the PCa immune microenvironment remains limited. On the other hand, immune checkpoint blockade has revolutionized the treatment of certain cancer types, but fails to achieve any benefit in advanced PCa, due to an immune suppressive environment. In this study, it is reported that AR signaling pathway is evidently activated in tumor‐associated macrophages (TAMs) of PCa both in mice and humans. AR acts as a transcriptional repressor for IL1B in TAMs. ADT releases the restraint of AR on IL1B and therefore leads to an excessive expression and secretion of IL‐1β in TAMs. IL‐1β induces myeloid‐derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) accumulation that inhibits the activation of cytotoxic T cells, leading to the immune suppressive microenvironment. Critically, anti‐IL‐1β antibody coupled with ADT and the immune checkpoint inhibitor anti‐PD‐1 antibody exerts a stronger anticancer effect on PCa following castration. Together, IL‐1β is an important androgen‐responsive immunotherapeutic target for advanced PCa.

Abstract Biomass is considered as a promising source to fabricate functional carbon materials for its sustainability, low cost, and high carbon content. Biomass‐derived‐carbon materials (BCMs) have been a thriving research field. Novel structures, diverse synthesis methods, and versatile applications of BCMs have been reported. However, there has been no recent review of the numerous studies of different aspects of BCMs‐related research. Therefore, this paper presents a comprehensive review that summarizes the progress of BCMs related research. Herein, typical types of biomass used to prepare BCMs are introduced. Variable structures of BCMs are summarized as the performance and properties of BCMs are closely related to their structures. Representative synthesis strategies, including both their merits and drawbacks are reviewed comprehensively. Moreover, the influence of synthetic conditions on the structure of as‐prepared carbon products is discussed, providing important information for the rational design of the fabrication process of BCMs. Recent progress in versatile applications of BCMs based on their morphologies and physicochemical properties is reported. Finally, the remaining challenges of BCMs, are highlighted. Overall, this review provides a valuable overview of current knowledge and recent progress of BCMs, and it outlines directions for future research development of BCMs.

Individual identification and authentication techniques are merged into many aspects of human life with various applications, including access control, payment or banking transfer, and healthcare. Yet conventional identification and authentication methods such as passwords, biometrics, tokens, and smart cards suffer from inconvenience and/or insecurity. Here, inspired by quick response (QR) code and implantable microdevices, implantable and minimally-invasive QR code subcutaneous microchips (QRC-SMs) are proposed to be an effective approach to carry useful and private information, thus enabling individual identification and authentication. Two types of QRC-SMs, QRC-SMs with “hole” and “flat” elements and QRC-SMs with “titanium-coated” and “non-coated” elements, are designed and fabricated to store personal information. Corresponding ultrasound microscopy and photoacoustic microscopy are used for imaging the QR code pattern underneath skin, and open-source artificial intelligence algorithm is applied for QR code detection and recognition. Ex vivo experiments under tissue and in vivo experiments with QRC-SMs implanted in live mice have been performed, demonstrating successful information retrieval from implanted QRC-SMs. QRC-SMs are hidden subcutaneously and invisible to the eyes. They cannot be forgotten, misplaced or lost, and can always be ready for timely medical identification, access control, and payment or banking transfer. Hence, QRC-SMs provide promising routes towards private, secure, and convenient individual identification and authentication.

In this study, we established a new methodology for preparing 5′−nucleotidase (5′−NT) with the aim of enhancing our understanding of its enzyme activity and laying a basis for regulating the content of umami−enhancing nucleotides in pork. 5′−NT was prepared with Sephadex gel filtration and reverse−phase high−performance liquid chromatography, and its enzymatic properties and catalytic activity were evaluated. The results show that the molecular weight of the prepared 5′−NT was 57 kDa, the optimal catalytic temperature was 40 °C, and the optimal pH was 8. Zn2+, and sucrose showed inhibitory effects on the activity of 5′−NT, while K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, glucose, fructose, and trehalose promoted the activity of the studied compound. The prepared 5′−NT exhibited higher catalytic activity and selectivity against IMP compared with its commercial counterpart, while its catalytic activity against XMP was not significant (p > 0.05). In brief, we established a new methodology for preparing 5′−NT, enhancing our understanding of its enzyme activity and providing a solid basis for regulating the content of umami−enhancing nucleotides in pork through the control of endogenous 5′−NT activity.

Capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) has been widely studied due to its excellent resonance characteristics and array integration. This paper presents the first study of the CMUT electrostatic stiffness resonant accelerometer. To improve the sensitivity of the CMUT accelerometer, this paper innovatively proposes the CMUT ring-perforation membrane structure, which effectively improves the acceleration sensitivity by reducing the mechanical stiffness of the elastic membrane. The acceleration sensitivity is 10.9 (Hz/g) in the acceleration range of 0–20 g, which is 100% higher than that of the conventional CMUT structure. This research contributes to the acceleration measurement field of CMUT and can effectively contribute to the breakthrough of vibration acceleration monitoring technology in aerospace, medical equipment, and automotive electronics.

Surface acoustic wave resonators are widely applied in electronics, communication, and other engineering fields. However, the spurious modes generally present in resonators can cause deterioration in device performance. Therefore, this paper proposes a hexagonal weighted structure to suppress them. With the construction of a finite element resonator model, the parameters of the interdigital transducer (IDT) and the area of the dummy finger weighting are determined. The spurious waves are confined within the dummy finger area, whereas the main mode is less affected by this structure. To verify the suppression effect of the simulation, resonators with conventional and hexagonal weighted structures are fabricated using the micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) process. After the S-parameter test of the prepared resonators, the hexagonal weighted resonators achieve a high level of spurious mode suppression. Their properties are superior to those of the conventional structure, with a higher Q value (10,406), a higher minimum return loss (25.7 dB), and a lower ratio of peak sidelobe (19%). This work provides a feasible solution for the design of SAW resonators to suppress spurious modes.

3D printing provides a novel approach to fabricate bulk metallic glass components without limitations in size and geometry. However, defects (porosity and partial crystallization) are inevitable, which are detrimental to mechanical properties. The present work shows that by careful control of these defects in a 3D-printed BMG (Zr60.14Cu22.31Fe4.85Al9.7Ag3), a promising combination of high strength (1.8 GPa), and fairly good plasticity (>1%) and fracture toughness (∼45 MPa m1/2) can be achieved via utilizing the strengthening effect (nanocrystalline precipitation) and toughening effect (micropores-induced shear banding). The results indicate that the mechanical properties of 3D-printed BMGs could be tailored by the defect engineering strategy.

The sources of social exclusion are very wide, ranging from the closest people to strangers. However, current studies mainly reveal the electrophysiological characteristics of social exclusion by means of binary comparison between social exclusion and social inclusion, and lack of in-depth analysis of the differences caused by different sources of exclusion. In this study, a static passing ball paradigm system including close and distant relationship identity information was used to reveal the electrophysiological characteristics of individuals when they were excluded by people with different close and distant relationships. The results showed that there was a degree effect of P2, P3a, and LPC components when individuals were excluded by people with different close and distant relationships. Specifically, the amplitude of P2, P3a, and LPC components was larger when individuals were excluded by more distant people. The results indicated that individuals would become more alert and perceive stronger exclusion experience when they were excluded by more distant people, which provided more diversified evidence for the conclusion that electrophysiological components were larger under the condition of exclusion, and revealed the electrophysiological basis behind the multiple motivation models. The results also helped to explain the physiological reasons behind individuals’ different coping behaviors toward excluder with different importance of relationship.

In this work, an acylhydrazone derivative (QN62) was developed via the one-step condensation of 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic hydrazide with quinoline-8-carboxaldehyde. The structure of the QN62 compound was characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HR-MS (ESI), and X-ray crystallography. As a dual-functional turn-on fluorescence chemosensor, QN62 exhibited rapid recognition for Zn2+ in DMSO-H2O (4:1, v/v) and Mg2+ in ethanol-H2O (9:1, v/v). The enhancement in fluorescence detection was associated with the coordination reaction between QN62 and the target ions, which promoted intramolecular charge transfer and prevented the CN isomerization process. Simultaneously, a rapid color change from colorless to yellowish-green or yellow under UV light (365 nm) was easily visible to the naked eye. Under optimal conditions, the limit of detection and limit of quantification were 32.3 nM and 97.8 nM for Zn2+ and 16.1 nM and 48.9 nM for Mg2+, respectively. The recognition mechanism was reasonably speculated based on analysis of the Job’s plot, HR-MS, 1H NMR, and density functional theoretical calculations. Utilizing silica-gel plates fabricated from the QN62 chemosensor, the visual and rapid identification of Zn2+ and Mg2+ was successfully achieved, which could provide a convenient approach for on-site detection in environmental fields. The QN62 chemosensor could also quantify trace amounts of Zn2+ and Mg2+ in water samples. Furthermore, the cell imaging experiments indicated that QN62 could effectively sense intracellular Zn2+ and Mg2+, providing potential applications in biological systems.

ABSTRACT: With increasing challenges towards continued scaling and improvement in performance faced by electronic computing, mechanical computing has started to attract growing interests. Taking advantage of the mechanical degree of freedom in solid state devices, micro/nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) could provide alternative solutions for future computing and memory systems with ultralow power consumption, compatibility with harsh environments, and high reconfigurability. In this review, MEMS/NEMS-enabled memories and logic processors were surveyed, and the prospects and challenges for future on-chip mechanical computing were also analyzed.

During the investigation of underground oil storage, only the apparent inclination and apparent dip angle are obtained from the measurement of structural plane occurrence of the inclined hole in rock mass due to the angle between the reference system of the TV imager and the ground, which vary greatly from the actual conditions. Therefore, a correction formula for the structural plane occurrence of inclined hole was proposed based on the rotation matrix theory in combination with the characteristics of the borehole TV imager with constant true north direction, and the formula was verified with the geometric model and the engineering cases. Besides, the measurement results based on inclined hole imaging were corrected based on the actual investigation of an underground oil storage, and the occurrence area and the vertical variation characteristics of structural plane in the storage were revealed. The results show that the structural plane occurrence is quite different before and after correction, and the development of the structural plane after correction is consistent with the actual situation. Moreover, the apparent inclination and dip angle of the structural plane of inclined hole can be transformed into the true inclination and dip angle with the proposed correction formula, thereby greatly improving the precision of structural plane occurrence based on inclined hole imaging and effectively controlling the engineering error. Conclusively, the research results could provide theoretical evidence and data support to the evaluation on the surrounding rock stability, structural development and underground water seepage of the underground oil storage.

For simulating the actual working conditions, a series of gradient ratio tests of geotextile filtering clay are completed by using an improved gradient ratio permeameter that can apply vertical load. The tests are carried out under the condition of the critical hydraulic gradient (1.0) and hydraulic gradient equal to 2.0, respectively, with the 4th layer of clay soil in Shanghai and the short fiber needle punched non-woven geotextile. The variation of the filtration performance of geotextile with hydraulic gradient and normal stress is studied by changing the vertical load. The results show that the hydraulic gradient and normal stress are the important factors affecting the clogging characteristics and the permeability of geotextile filter. The gradient ratio of the geotextile filter clay increases with the increase of the vertical load, but there is no impermissible clogging when it is stable. Under a certain load, the coefficient of permeability decreases with time and then tend to stabilize. The stabilized coefficient of permeability decreases with the increase of the vertical load. The hydraulic gradient from 1.0 to 2.0 also causes the increase of the gradient ratio and the decrease of the permeability. The test results better reflect the filtration effect of the geotextile filter under the actual working conditions, which can provide references for similar engineering design.

We present a microlens-assisted imaging approach to record the scattering light of plasmonic nanoparticles at the single particle level. The microlens can significantly enhance the backscattering of visible light from individual plasmonic nanoparticles by several dozen folds, and single gold nanoparticles with a diameter as low as 60 nm can be imaged under a conventional optical microscope. This can benefit from a significant increase in the scattering intensity afforded by the microlens, meaning that the imaging of gold nanoparticles at a high temporal resolution (up to 5000 Hz) can be achieved, which is fast enough to record single particle adhesion events on the substrate. This research presents a fast and efficient means of acquiring scattering light from plasmonic nanoparticles, which has great potential to develop plasmonic nanoparticle-based biosensors and investigate a wide range of plasmonic nanoparticle-based fast interaction processes.

We investigate the effect of pure darkness and UV illumination on the corrosion process of 3Ni weathering steels involved in both marine atmospheric environments. The corrosion behavior of 3Ni steel in both environments was assessed by cyclic acceleration experiments, electrochemical measurements, morphological analysis and physical phase analysis. The results show that UV illumination affects the corrosion process through the photovoltaic effect of the corrosion products, with photoelectrons and photo-vacancies participating in the redox reaction between the substrate and the atmospheric environment, thereby affecting the corrosion rate of 3Ni steel, the physical composition of the corrosion products and the denseness of the rust layer.

Computed tomography (CT) is widely used in clinical diagnosis because of its fast imaging speed and high resolution. However, higher doses of radiation will cause damages to human tissues and organs, while lower doses will lead to serious deterioration of imaging quality. In order to solve the above contradiction, researchers have focused on the low-dose CT imaging technology to study how to reduce the harm caused by radiation to the human body to the greatest extent under the condition of ensuring the imaging quality to meet the needs of clinical diagnosis. In recent years, deep learning has developed rapidly in the field of artificial intelligence, and has been widely used in image processing, pattern recognition, signal processing fields. Driven by big data, LDCT imaging algorithms based on deep learning have made great progress. This paper studies the development of low-dose CT imaging algorithms in recent years in terms of three aspects: the process of CT imaging, the noise modeling of low-dose CT, and the design of imaging algorithms. In particular, the imaging algorithms in the field of deep learning are systematically elaborated and analyzed. Finally, future developments in the field of LDCT image artifact suppression are also prospected.

Abstract Long-term monocultures have severely inhibited the cultivation of Chinese peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.). In this study, the effects of continuous cropping on soil chemical properties and microbial communities were investigated in peanut fields that had been in crop rotation for 10 years and in monoculture for 10 years. The results found that long-term monoculture increased the activities of available potassium, available phosphorus, available nitrogen, soil organic matter, urease, acid phosphatase and catalase; while decreasing the activity of catalase. The diversity and abundance of soil bacteria and fungi is higher under continuous peanut cultivation. At the genus level, the relative abundance of potentially beneficial microflora genera was higher in the rhizosphere soil of rotational cropping than in continuous cropping, while the opposite was true for the relative abundance of potentially pathogenic fungal genera. Principal coordinates and cluster analysis indicated that continuous cropping altered the structure of the microbial community. The results of the functional predictions showed significant differences in the functioning of the rhizosphere microbial community between continuous and rotational cropping. In conclusion, long-term continuous cropping changed the chemical properties of the soil, altered the structure and function of the soil bacterial and fungal communities in peanut rhizosphere, which to some extent reduced the relative abundance of potentially beneficial microbial genera and increased the relative abundance of potentially pathogenic fungal genera, thus increasing the potential risk of soil-borne diseases and reducing the yield and quality of peanut. Therefore, in the actual production process, attention should be paid not only to the application of chemical fertilizers, but also to crop rotation and the application of microbial fertilizers.
