Abstract

Secondary cosmic ray fluxes are important probes of the propagation and interaction of high-energy particles in the Galaxy. Recent measurements of primary and secondary cosmic ray nuclei have revealed unexpected spectral features that demand a deeper understanding. In this work we report the direct measurement of the cosmic ray boron spectrum from 10 GeV/n to 8 TeV/n with eight years of data collected by the Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) mission. The measured spectrum shows an evident hardening at $182\pm24$ GeV/n with a spectral power index of $\gamma_1 = 3.02 \pm 0.01$ before the break and an index change of $\Delta \gamma = 0.31 \pm 0.05$ after the break. A simple power law model is disfavored at a confidence level of 8$\sigma$. Compared with the hardenings measured in the DAMPE proton and helium spectra, the secondary boron spectrum hardens roughly twice as much as these primaries, which is consistent with a propagation related mechanism to interpret the spectral hardenings of cosmic rays observed at hundreds of GeV/n., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, submitted to PRL

Abstract

Precise direct cosmic-ray (CR) measurements provide an important probe to study the energetic particle sources in our Galaxy, and the interstellar environment through which these particles propagate. Uncertainties on hadronic models, ion-nucleon cross sections in particular, are currently the limiting factor towards obtaining more accurate CR ion flux measurements with calorimetric space-based experiments. We present an energy-dependent measurement of the inelastic cross section of protons and helium-4 nuclei (alpha particles) on a Bi$_4$Ge$_3$O$_{12}$ target, using 88 months of data collected by the DAMPE space mission. The kinetic energy range per nucleon of the measurement points ranges from 18 GeV to 9 TeV for protons, and from 5 GeV/n to 3 TeV/n for helium-4 nuclei. Our results lead to a significant improvement of the CR flux normalisation. 3. Sensitive detection of millimeter wave electric field by driving trapped surface-state electrons

Abstract

Sensitive detection of electromagnetic wave electric field plays an important role for electromagnetic communication and sensing. Here, we propose a quantum sensor to sensitively detect the electric field of the millimeter (mm) wave. The quantum sensor consists of many surface-state electrons trapped individually on liquid helium by a scalable electrode-network at the bottom of the helium film. On such a chip, each of the trapped electrons can be manipulated by the biased dc-current to deliver the strong spin-orbit couplings. The mm wave signal to be detected is applied to non-dispersively drive the orbital states of the trapped electrons, just resulting in the Stark shifts of the dressed spin-orbital states. As a consequence, the electric field of the applied mm wave could be detected sensitively by using the spin-echo interferometry of the long-lived spin states of the electrons trapped on liquid helium. Abstract

Recent observations of the light component of the cosmic-ray spectrum have revealed unexpected features that motivate further and more precise measurements up to the highest energies. The Dark Matter Particle Explorer is a satellite-based cosmic-ray experiment that has been operational since December 2015, continuously collecting data on high-energy cosmic particles with very good statistics, energy resolution, and particle identification capabilities. In this work, the latest measurements of the energy spectrum of proton+helium in the energy range from 46 GeV to 464 TeV are presented. Among the most distinctive features of the spectrum, a spectral hardening at 600 GeV has been observed, along with a softening at 29 TeV measured with a 6.6{\sigma} significance. Moreover, the detector features and the analysis approach allowed for the extension of the spectral measurement up to the sub-PeV region. Abstract

The Super $\tau$-Charm facility (STCF) is an electron-positron collider proposed by the Chinese particle physics community. It is designed to operate in a center-of-mass energy range from 2 to 7 GeV with a peak luminosity of $0.5\times 10^{35}{\rm cm}^{-2}{\rm s}^{-1}$ or higher. The STCF will produce a data sample about a factor of 100 larger than that by the present $\tau$-Charm factory -- the BEPCII, providing a unique platform for exploring the asymmetry of matter-antimatter (charge-parity violation), in-depth studies of the internal structure of hadrons and the nature of non-perturbative strong interactions, as well as searching for exotic hadrons and physics beyond the Standard Model. The STCF project in China is under development with an extensive R\&D program. This document presents the physics opportunities at the STCF, describes conceptual designs of the STCF detector system, and discusses future plans for detector R\&D and physics case studies.

Abstract

More than a century after the performance of the oil drop experiment, the possible existence of fractionally charged particles FCP still remains unsettled. The search for FCPs is crucial for some extensions of the Standard Model in particle physics. Most of the previously conducted searches for FCPs in cosmic rays were based on experiments underground or at high altitudes. However, there have been few searches for FCPs in cosmic rays carried out in orbit other than AMS-01 flown by a space shuttle and BESS by a balloon at the top of the atmosphere. In this study, we conduct an FCP search in space based on on-orbit data obtained using the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) satellite over a period of five years. Unlike underground experiments, which require an FCP energy of the order of hundreds of GeV, our FCP search starts at only a few GeV. An upper limit of $6.2\times 10^{-10}~~\mathrm{cm^{-2}sr^{-1} s^{-1}}$ is obtained for the flux. Our results demonstrate that DAMPE exhibits higher sensitivity than experiments of similar types by three orders of magnitude that more stringently restricts the conditions for the existence of FCP in primary cosmic rays., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, accepted by PRD

Abstract

Quadrupole phase, as a novel high-order topological phase, exhibits nontrivial gapless states at the boundaries whose dimension is lower than bulk by two. However, this phase has not been observed experimentally in two-dimensional (2D) materials up to now. In this work, using first-principles calculations and tight-binding (TB) model, we propose that the experimentally synthesized C2N is a 2D quadrupole topological insulator with one-dimensional gapped edge states and zero-dimensional gapless corner states. C2N is found to have a large bulk gap of 2.45 eV and an edge gap of 0.32 eV, making it an excellent candidate to evidently present the nontrivial corner states in experiments. The robustness of the corner states against the edge disorders has been explicitly identified. Moreover, another three C2N-like materials are also found to host the nontrivial quadrupole phase including an experimentally synthesized material aza-fused microporous polymers (CMP). The four 2D quadrupole topological phases proposed in our present work provide excellent candidates for studying the novel high-order topological properties in future experiments., Comment: 5 figures

Abstract

The measurement of the energy spectrum of cosmic ray helium nuclei from 70 GeV to 80 TeV using 4.5 years of data recorded by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is reported in this work. A hardening of the spectrum is observed at an energy of about 1.3 TeV, similar to previous observations. In addition, a spectral softening at about 34 TeV is revealed for the first time with large statistics and well controlled systematic uncertainties, with an overall significance of $4.3\sigma$. The DAMPE spectral measurements of both cosmic protons and helium nuclei suggest a particle charge dependent softening energy, although with current uncertainties a dependence on the number of nucleons cannot be ruled out., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, published in Phys. Abstract

The precise measurement of the spectrum of protons, the most abundant component of the cosmic radiation, is necessary to understand the source and acceleration of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. This work reports the measurement of the cosmic ray proton fluxes with kinetic energies from 40 GeV to 100 TeV, with two and a half years of data recorded by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE). This is the first time an experiment directly measures the cosmic ray protons up to ~100 TeV with a high statistics. The measured spectrum confirms the spectral hardening found by previous experiments and reveals a softening at ~13.6 TeV, with the spectral index changing from ~2.60 to ~2.85. Our result suggests the existence of a new spectral feature of cosmic rays at energies lower than the so-called knee, and sheds new light on the origin of Galactic cosmic rays., Comment: 37 pages, 5 figures, published in Science Advances

Abstract

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), a satellite-based cosmic ray and gamma-ray detector, was launched on December 17, 2015, and began its on-orbit operation on December 24, 2015. In this work we document the on-orbit calibration procedures used by DAMPE and report the calibration results of the Plastic Scintillator strip Detector (PSD), the Silicon-Tungsten tracKer-converter (STK), the BGO imaging calorimeter (BGO), and the Neutron Detector (NUD). The results are obtained using Galactic cosmic rays, bright known GeV gamma-ray sources, and charge injection into the front-end electronics of each sub-detector. The determination of the boundary of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), the measurement of the live time, and the alignments of the detectors are also introduced. The calibration results demonstrate the stability of the detectors in almost two years of the on-orbit operation.

Abstract

The Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS) is an imaging survey and uses the 2.3 m Bok telescope at Kitt Peak. In order to tap the astrometric potential of the Bok telescope and improve the astrometry of BASS, a distortion solution for the Bok telescope is made. In the past, we used a single lookup table to correct all the positional errors. However, this method can not be applied to the reduction of the observation for the Bok telescope where four CCD chips are equipped with. Then quite different from our previous method, two third-order polynomials were used to fit the lookup table. By using the polynomial Geometric Distortion (called GD hereafter) correction the astrometry of BASS is improved greatly. Moreover, an additional lookup table correction is found to be more effective to obtain a final GD. The results show that the positional measurement precision of the appropriate bright stars is estimated at about 20 mas and even better in each direction. Besides, the relative positions of the chips are measured. The change of the inter-chip gaps in horizontal or vertical is no more than 5 pixel between 2016 and 2017 and the change of the roll angle is no more than 0.1 degree., Comment: 9 pages, 24 figures

Abstract

High energy cosmic ray electrons plus positrons (CREs), which lose energy quickly during their propagation, provide an ideal probe of Galactic high-energy processes and may enable the observation of phenomena such as dark-matter particle annihilation or decay. The CRE spectrum has been directly measured up to $\sim 2$ TeV in previous balloon- or space-borne experiments, and indirectly up to $\sim 5$ TeV by ground-based Cherenkov $\gamma$-ray telescope arrays. Evidence for a spectral break in the TeV energy range has been provided by indirect measurements of H.E.S.S., although the results were qualified by sizeable systematic uncertainties. Here we report a direct measurement of CREs in the energy range $25~{\rm GeV}-4.6~{\rm TeV}$ by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) with unprecedentedly high energy resolution and low background. The majority of the spectrum can be properly fitted by a smoothly broken power-law model rather than a single power-law model. The direct detection of a spectral break at $E \sim0.9$ TeV confirms the evidence found by H.E.S.S., clarifies the behavior of the CRE spectrum at energies above 1 TeV and sheds light on the physical origin of the sub-TeV CREs., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, Nature in press, doi:10.1038/nature24475

Abstract

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), one of the four scientific space science missions within the framework of the Strategic Pioneer Program on Space Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is a general purpose high energy cosmic-ray and gamma-ray observatory, which was successfully launched on December 17th, 2015 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. The DAMPE scientific objectives include the study of galactic cosmic rays up to $\sim 10$ TeV and hundreds of TeV for electrons/gammas and nuclei respectively, and the search for dark matter signatures in their spectra. In this paper we illustrate the layout of the DAMPE instrument, and discuss the results of beam tests and calibrations performed on ground. Abstract

The external business environment exhibits many uncertainties with the continuing changes in technological progress, political environment, and consumption behavior. This has made companies recognize the significance of addressing environmental issues to remain competitive in the modern global market. Thus, much attention is given to the supply chain to ensure environmental factors are considered during supplier selection. However, the process of selecting the right suppliers to enable green supply chain management is proving difficult. This paper presents a novel approach using fuzzy influence diagrams to identify key green supplier selection criteria, combined with multi-criteria decision making to evaluate alternatives. The fuzzy influence diagram derives priority supplier capabilities by modeling interrelationships and uncertainties. The multi-criteria technique then ranks suppliers based on prospect values. A case study of furniture manufacturer supplier selection validates the proposed method. Compared to existing models, this integrated approach reduces subjective weight bias and improves handling of complex criteria dependencies and uncertainties. The results demonstrate state-of-the-art performance in identifying ideal green suppliers. This technique can enhance sustainability efforts across supply chains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Host–guest hybrid (HGH) consisting of p-But-calix[8]arene and fullerene C70 were fabricated with a facial solution deposition method. The as-prepared HGH samples are well periodic arranged in a layer structure, in which the interactions between the guest C70 and host p-Butcalix[8]arene molecules are van der Waals forces. High pressure Raman and UV–Vis absorption spectra studies on the HGH were recorded. Our results show that an orientational related phase transition and a one-dimensional (1D) polymerization of C70 molecules occur at about 2 and 7 GPa at room temperature, respectively. The band gap of the HGH translated synchronously with the change of structure upon compress. We suggest that the molecular confinement in such layer structure of the HGH restricts the polymerization of C70 molecules within a layer, which tunes the phase transition process of C70. This supplies a possible way to design fullerene-based functional materials at suitable conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have investigated the structural phase transition of FeCo and FeNi nanoparticles by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation using the generalized embedded atom potential (GEAM). It is found that the phase varies with the atomic compositions and annealing processes. By using the Honeycutt and Andersen index (HA index), bond order parameters (BOP) and pair correlation function (PCF), we found that a BCC to defective icosahedra phase transition occurs in the FeCo nanoparticle when Co composition is increased to about 60 at %. In the FeNi nanoparticle, three phases have been identified, namely, the BCC phase, the mixed BCC/FCC phase, and the multilayer defective icosahedral phase, which correspond to the Ni compositions of 0-20 at %, 20-70 at %, and 70-100 at %, respectively. Our simulations have well reproduced the phase transition points and most of the phases observed in recent experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Based on semiempirical generalized embedded atom method (GEAM), we carried out molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations to study the structural properties of FeCo and FeNi nanoparticles. It is found that these two kinds of nanoparticles possess a new stable quasicore-shell structure, no matter whether they are in molten or condensed state and whether they are prepared by annealing or quenching. In FeCo (FeNi) nanoparticles of various sizes and atom compositions, the quasicore-shell structure is always preferred, with the shell formed only by Fe atoms and the core formed by randomly distributed Co(Ni) and Fe atoms. We have also investigated the formation mechanism of the quasicore-shell structure by energy difference analysis of the pure and doped icosahedra structure of FeCo and FeNi nanoparticles. Abstract

A De Pangher-type long counter was constructed at Peking University for neutron fluence measurement. The responses and effective centers of the long counter were calculated using the Monte Carlo method. The variations with neutron energy of the position of the effective center, calculated by the Monte Carlo code, was experimentally validated with a 241AmBe neutron source and several mono-energetic neutron sources ranging from 100 keV to 6 MeV. Long counter calibration was performed using a radionuclide source from Peking University, and neutron fluence measured by the calibrated long counter was successfully compared to values determined with reference instruments (two recoil proton counters and a 238U fission chamber). The relative deviations were lower than 6% along the whole energy range. The calibrated long counter was thus successfully applied in the calibration of a Bonner sphere spectrometer.

Abstract

Neutron emission spectroscopy (NES) measurement aimed at providing the information on fast ions induced by auxiliary heating systems at Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), with a liquid scintillation detector is described. It is the first time that the NES diagnostics are employed to probe fast ions induced by neutral beam injection (NBI) at EAST. The time trace of the fusion neutrons, obtained by the liquid scintillation detector, was consistent with the result measured by a standard 235U fission chamber under NBI heating scenario, which verifies the performance of the detector. NUBEAM code is used to determine the fast deuteron velocity distribution using the parametrized plasma profiles as input. The pulse height spectrum of the fusion neutrons was successfully reproduced by combining the simulation of the neutron energy spectrum and the calculation of the detector response functions. The experimental data are also interpreted from a view of weight functions, which illustrate the velocity-space sensitivity of the liquid scintillation detector with a radial line of sight. The results demonstrate the capability of the liquid scintillation detector to contribute to studies on fast-ion physics at EAST.

Abstract

The Time-Of-Flight Enhanced Diagnostics (TOFED) neutron spectrometer with a double-ring structure has been installed at the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) to perform advanced neutron emission spectroscopy diagnosis for deuterium plasma. In order to reduce the random coincidence from the background neutrons and gamma-rays, TOFED was moved outside the experimental hall and placed in the newly-built nuclear diagnostics laboratory in 2017. In this paper, the instrument-specific weight functions of TOFED are derived by taking the instrument response matrix and the radial line of sight in this new layout into consideration. The results show that the instrument is predominantly sensitive to counter-passing particles in the region where time-of-flights < 69.4 ns, while events at higher time-of-flights (corresponding lower neutron energies) are mostly representative of co-passing ions. The instrument-specific weight functions express the relationship between data in a given channel of the spectrum and the velocity space region that contributes to that. The results can be applied for energetic particle physics studies at EAST, in particular to compare data from different diagnostic techniques.

Abstract

This work presents measurements done at the Peking University Van de Graaff neutron source of the response of single crystal synthetic diamond (SD) detectors to quasi-monoenergetic neutrons of 14-20 MeV. The results show an energy resolution of 1% for incoming 20 MeV neutrons, which, together with 1% detection efficiency, opens up to new prospects for fast ion physics studies in high performance nuclear fusion devices such as SD neutron spectrometry of deuterium-tritium plasmas heated by neutral beam injection.
