Abstract Liver ultrasound is widely used in clinical practice due to its advantages of non-invasiveness, non-radiation, and real-time imaging. Accurate segmentation of the liver region in ultrasound images is essential for accelerating the auxiliary diagnosis of liver-related diseases. This paper proposes BACANet, a deep learning algorithm designed for real-time liver ultrasound segmentation. Our approach utilizes a lightweight network backbone for liver feature extraction and incorporates a convolutional attention mechanism to enhance the network's ability to capture global contextual information. To improve early localization of liver boundaries, we developed a selective large kernel convolution module for boundary feature extraction and introduced explicit liver boundary supervision. Additionally, we designed an enhanced attention gate to efficiently convey liver body and boundary features to the decoder to enhance the feature representation capability. Experimental results across multiple datasets demonstrate that BACANet effectively completes the task of liver ultrasound segmentation, achieving a balance between inference speed and segmentation accuracy. On a public dataset, BACANet achieved a DSC of 0.921 and an IOU of 0.854. On a private test dataset, BACANet achieved a DSC of 0.950 and an IOU of 0.907, with an inference time of approximately 0.32 s per image on a CPU processor.

Normally, in the downlink Network-Coded Multiple Access (NCMA) system, the same power is allocated to different users. However, equal power allocation is unsuitable for some scenarios, such as when user devices have different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Hence, we study the power allocation in the downlink NCMA system in this paper, and propose a downlink Network-Coded Multiple Access with Diverse Power (NCMA-DP), wherein different amounts of power are allocated to different users. In terms of the Bit Error Rate (BER) of the multi-user decoder, and the number of packets required to correctly decode the message, the performance of the user with more allocated power is greatly improved compared to the Conventional NCMA (NCMA-C). Meanwhile, the performance of the user with less allocated power is still much better than NCMA-C. Furthermore, the overall throughput of NCMA-DP is greatly improved compared to that of NCMA-C. The simulation results demonstrate the remarkable performance of the proposed NCMA-DP.

Abstract Backgrounds Currently, family with sequence similarity 65 member A (FAM65A) is reported as a pivotal regulator in various cancers. However, the effect of FAM65A in lung squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is still unclear, the prime objective of this research is to explore the role of FAM65A in LSCC. Methods Gene expression data and correlated clinical information were downloaded from the public database and the expression of FAM65A was detected. The expression of FAM65A was also detected in our collected clinical samples and LSCC cell lines. Survival package of R language was used to determine the survival significance of FAM65A. Proteins expression level was determined via western blot assay. Cell function experiments and in vivo experiments were performed to explore the effect of FAM65A on LSCC cell biological behaviors. Results FAM65A expression was significantly increased in LSCC clinical samples and cell lines. High FAM65A expression predicted poor prognosis in LSCC patients. After silencing FAM65A, the ability of LSCC cell proliferation, invasion and migration was decreased, and LSCC cell cycle was blocked. Moreover, in vivo experiments revealed that silencing FAM65A could inhibit LSCC cell proliferation. Conclusions High FAM65A expression could enhance proliferative, invasive and migratory abilities of LSCC. FAM65A might be a novel biomarker of LSCC.

Abstract Objective Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a severe disease that primarily affects the middle-aged population, imposing a significant economic and social burden. Recent research has linked the progression of non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (NONFH) to the composition of the gut microbiota. Steroids and alcohol are considered major contributing factors. However, the relationship between NONFH caused by two etiologies and the microbiota remains unclear. In this study, we examined the gut microbiota and fecal metabolic phenotypes of two groups of patients, and analyzed potential differences in the pathogenic mechanisms from both the microbial and metabolic perspectives. Methods Utilizing fecal samples from 68 NONFH patients (32 steroid-induced, 36 alcohol-induced), high-throughput 16 S rDNA sequencing and liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) metabolomics analyses were conducted. Univariate and multivariate analyses were applied to the omics data, employing linear discriminant analysis effect size to identify potential biomarkers. Additionally, functional annotation of differential metabolites and associated pathways was performed using the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database. Subsequently, Spearman correlation analysis was employed to assess the potential correlations between differential gut microbiota and metabolites. Results High-throughput 16 S rDNA sequencing revealed significant gut microbial differences. At the genus level, the alcohol group had higher Lactobacillus and Roseburia, while the steroid group had more Megasphaera and Akkermansia. LC-MS/MS metabolomic analysis indicates significant differences in fecal metabolites between steroid- and alcohol-induced ONFH patients. Alcohol-induced ONFH (AONFH) showed elevated levels of L-Lysine and Oxoglutaric acid, while steroid-induced ONFH(SONFH) had increased Gluconic acid and Phosphoric acid. KEGG annotation revealed 10 pathways with metabolite differences between AONFH and SONFH patients. Correlation analysis revealed the association between differential gut flora and differential metabolites. Conclusions Our results suggest that hormones and alcohol can induce changes in the gut microbiota, leading to alterations in fecal metabolites. These changes, driven by different pathways, contribute to the progression of the disease. The study opens new research directions for understanding the pathogenic mechanisms of hormone- or alcohol-induced NONFH, suggesting that differentiated preventive and therapeutic approaches may be needed for NONFH caused by different triggers.

Abstract Background For knee osteoarthritis patients, analyzing alignment of lower limbs is essential for therapy, which is currently measured from standing long-leg radiographs of anteroposterior X-ray (LLR) manually. To address the time wasting, poor reproducibility and inconvenience of use caused by existing methods, we present an automated measurement model in portable devices for assessing knee alignment from LLRs. Method We created a model and trained it with 837 conforming LLRs, and tested it using 204 LLRs without duplicates in a portable device. Both manual and model measurements were conducted independently, then we recorded knee alignment parameters such as Hip knee ankle angle (HKA), Joint line convergence angle (JCLA), Anatomical mechanical angle (AMA), mechanical Lateral distal femoral angle (mLDFA), mechanical Medial proximal tibial angle (mMPTA), and the time required. We evaluated the model’s performance compared with manual results in various metrics. Result In both the validation and test sets, the average mean radial errors were 2.778 and 2.447 (P0.05). Furthermore, the Bland-Altman 95% limits of agreement were less than ± 2° for HKA, JCLA, AMA, and mLDFA, and slightly more than ± 2 degrees for mMPTA. Conclusion The automatic measurement tool can assess the alignment of lower limbs in portable devices for knee osteoarthritis patients. The results are reliable, reproducible, and time-saving.

The management of indoor humidity through equipment consumes massive energy, leading to the growing interest in passive regulation of indoor humidity via moisture buffering. Numerous factors may impact the performance of interior finishing material during moisture regulation, thus identifying the dominant parameters is critical for moisture buffering effect optimization. This study analyzes the influence of five moisture and surface parameters, which are directly related to the moisture transfer of the interior finishing layer, on the thermal loads in a typical office building under typical climates in China. The analysis employs scatter plots and sensitivity indices based on Sobol's method. The results show that the material thickness plays a decisive role under different climates. The importance of sorption isotherm varies with climates and load types. The vapor diffusion resistance factor of the material only affects the latent heat loads, while the effect of the surface vapor transfer resistance is negligible. Finally, this study puts forward suggestions for interior finishing material selection to achieve low-load performance based on the characteristics of parameter combinations.

Background and purpose: GLP-1 receptor agonists are clinically utilized for type 2 diabetes and obesity. In vitro and in vivo preclinical studies were performed to assess the druggability of a novel small molecule GLP-1 receptor biased agonist SAL0112. Experimental approach: The HTRF assay, FLIPR assay, TR-FRET assay, and PathHunter assay were utilized for in vitro studies. Liver transporter tests were conducted using the HEK293-OATP1B1 and HEK293-OATP1B3 cell lines. In vitro stability assessments of various species and in vivo PK studies in rodents were performed. A model of type 2 diabetes and obesity induced by a high-energy diet in transgenic C57BL/6 mice expressing the human GLP-1 receptor gene was conducted. Principal results: SAL0112 demonstrated high potency and selectivity in activating the Gαs pathway of the GLP-1 receptor, with no observed desensitization. SAL0112 demonstrated greater stability in human and rat liver microsomes compared to Danuglipron. In vivo PK studies revealed higher absorption of SAL0112 in rats. Abstract Creep is one of the typical mechanical properties of clay, and studying the creep mechanical properties of clay is of great significance to construction projects in clay sites. This study conducted creep tests on Chengdu clay and found that the soil mass underwent elastic deformation, decay creep deformation, steady-state creep deformation, and accelerated creep deformation. The isochronous stress ratio-logarithmic strain curves and their mathematical models were proposed to thoroughly analyze clay creep mechanical properties. Creep automatic feature points, such as linear elastic extreme point, initial yield point, long-term strength point, and plastic point, were identified on the curve. Considering the hardening and damage effects during creep loading, linear elastic and viscoelastic elements considering the time-dependent damage, a viscoplastic element considering the load hardening effect, and viscoplastic and plastic elements considering the load damage effect were established based on the element model and the Riemann–Liouville fractional derivative. Based on the mechanical properties of the whole clay creep process, the creep mechanical feature points, and the established element model, a clay creep model was proposed considering the hardening and damage effects. The rationality and regularity of the creep model were verified using the creep test data. This research accurately revealed the creep mechanical properties of clay and facilitated soil deformation prediction, thus providing technical guidance and references for construction projects in clay sites.

Balance plays a crucial role in human life and social activities. Maintaining balance is a relatively complex process that requires the participation of various balance control subsystems (BCSes). However, previous studies have primarily focused on evaluating an individual’s overall balance ability or the ability of each BCS in isolation, without considering how they influence (or interact with) each other. The first study used clinical scales to evaluate the functions of the four BCSes, namely Reactive Postural Control (RPC), Anticipatory Postural Adjustment (APA), Dynamic Gait (DG), and Sensory Orientation (SO), and psychological factors such as fear of falling (FOF). A hierarchical structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to investigate the relationship between the BCSes and their association with FOF. The second study involved using posturography to measure and extract parameters from the center of pressure (COP) signal. SEM with sparsity constraint was used to analyze the relationship between vision, proprioception, and vestibular sense on balance based on the extracted COP parameters. The first study revealed that the RPC, APA, DG and SO indirectly influenced each other through their overall balance ability, and their association with FOF was not the same. APA has the strongest association with FOF, while RPC has the least association with FOF. The second study revealed that sensory inputs, such as vision, proprioception, and vestibular sensing, directly affected each other, but their associations were not identical. Among them, proprioception plays the most important role in the three sensory subsystems. This study provides the first numerical evidence that the BCSes are not independent of each other and exist in direct or indirect interplay. This approach has important implications for the diagnosis and management of balance-related disorders in clinical settings and improving our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of balance control.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images often lack sufficient attention to target features, inadequately express target feature information, and neglect phase information in conventional Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) recognition methods. These limitations lead to reduced recognition accuracy and slower processing speeds, critical drawbacks for SAR Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) systems. To overcome these challenges, this paper proposes the multi-scale complex-valued feature attention CNN (MsCvFA-CNN) for SAR ATR. MsCvFA-CNN is a model specifically designed for amplitude and phase information of SAR images. A novel complex-valued attention module (CAM) is proposed in this work to focus on the amplitude and phase characteristics of the target separately. By decoupling the amplitude and phase features, the CAM reduces the training time of the network, while preserving the relevant information. Furthermore, the MsCvFA-CNN employs multiple branches for feature extraction with different kernel sizes, which are then combined with CAM in the fusion stage to improve the network's representation of target features. The proposed MsCvFA-CNN is evaluated on both the complex-valued moving and stationary target acquisition and recognition (MSTAR) dataset, as well as the more challenging dataset for urban interpretation (OpenSARUrban). The results demonstrate that it outperforms traditional networks in terms of recognition accuracy and computational efficiency. Specifically, the use of complex-valued networks results in a 2.23% improvement in recognition accuracy compared to traditional real-valued networks. When CAM is added, the network's accuracy is further improved by 3.21%, and the number of epochs required to achieve the highest accuracy is reduced by nearly half.

Existing methods for remote sensing image captioning tend to describe a remote sensing image using generic language that lacks specific information about object counts. To address this limitation, we propose a novel framework for generating a caption that includes object count information for the remote sensing image. Our proposed framework comprises three modules: object counting, preliminary captioning, and numeral editing. The object counting module identifies objects in a remote sensing image and determines object counts. The preliminary captioning module generates a caption that may lack object count information. The numeral editing module incorporates the object counts into the caption, resulting in a more precise caption. Our proposed framework outperforms existing methods, as demonstrated through evaluations on three remote sensing image datasets. Our proposed framework is a significant step toward more precise and informative remote sensing image captioning.

ABSTRACTLand surface emissivity (LSE) represents an essential parameter for understanding land change and surface energy balance. While numerous algorithms have been proposed to retrieve LSE, they are seldom applied to remote sensing data with high spatial resolution. The SDGSAT-1 satellite provides an opportunity to retrieve LSE with high spatial resolution that can be regarded as references for validating LSE products generated from coarse-spatial-resolution satellite data. However, no study has yet explored LSE-retrieval based on SDGSAT-1. This research seeks to fill this gap through evaluating the radiometric calibration accuracy of SDGSAT-1, using five methods to retrieve pixel-level emissivity of Guangzhou, and comparing such results with emissivity generated from other satellites (e.g. Landsat 8, ECOSTRESS, and MODIS) that transited Guangzhou during the similar period. Our results indicated that SDGSAT-1 performed well in radiometric calibration. Heterogeneous vegetation and man-made surfaces registered significant emissivity differences in varying spatial resolutions, whereas relatively homogeneous water bodies registered smaller differences. Decreasing spatial resolution amplifies the emissivity differences of the same land cover among distinctive sensors. The five emissivity-retrieval methods performed exceptionally well based on SDGSAT-1, registering average absolute differences less than 0.026 as compared with Landsat 8; with decreasing spatial resolutions, the maximum difference between SDGSAT-1 and MODIS LSE product reached 0.124.

IntroductionVariability in microbial residues within soil aggregates are becoming progressively essential to the nutritive and sustainability of soils, and are therefore broadly regarded as an indispensable part of soil organic matter. It is unexplored how the widespread implementation of microbial fertilisers in agricultural production impacts soil organic nutrients, in particular the microbial residue fraction.MethodsWe performed a three-year field experiment to verify the distinct impacts of microbial and organic fertilizers on carbon accumulation in soil microbial leftovers among aggregate fractions.ResultsMicrobial residual carbon was shown to decrease insignificantly during the application of microbial fertilizer and to rise marginally afterwards with the utilization of organic fertilizer. However, the combined effects of the two fertilizers had substantial impacts on the accumulation of microbial residual carbon. Changes in the structure of the fungi and bacteria shown in this study have implications for the short-term potential of microbial fertilizer shortages to permanent soil carbon sequestration. Additionally, our findings revealed variations in microbial residue accumulation across the microbial fertilizers, with Azotobacter chroococcum fertilizer being preferable to Bacillus mucilaginosus fertilizer due to its higher efficiency. In this scenario of nutrient addition, fungal residues may serve as the primary binding component or focal point for the production of new microaggregates, since the quantity of SOC provided by fungal residues increased while that supplied by bacterial residues decreased.DiscussionOur findings collectively suggested that the mechanisms behind the observed bacterial and fungal MRC (microbial residue carbon) responses to microbial fertilizer or organic fertilizer in bamboo forest soils are likely to be distinct. The application of microbial fertilizers for a limited duration led to a decline soil stable carbon pool, potentially influencing the regulation of soil nutrients in such hilly bamboo forests.

Background: This study clarified the expression of cicrTLK1 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and explored its role in cancer growth, metastasis and immune escape, providing a potential molecular target and theoretical basis for NSCLC treatment. Methods: The expression levels of circTLK1, miR-876-3p and SRSF7 were determined by RT-qPCR assay. The localization of circTLK1 in NSCLC cells was determined by FISH assay. EdU and cell plate clone formation assay were applied to explore cell proliferation. Wound healing test and Transwell assay were applied to measure the migration and invasion ability. Cell apoptosis rate was detected by FCM assay. Western blotting assay was adopted to measure the protein expression of SRSF7. Dual-luciferase reporter gene assay was applied to assess the interaction between miR-876-3p and circTLK1, and between miR-876-3p and SRSF7. The ability of cirTLK1 to regulate tumor formation in vivo was examined by tumor transplantation experiments in nude mice. Results: The relative expression of circTLK1 was increased in NSCLC cell lines. Knockdown of circTLK1 prohibited the proliferation, migration, and invasion, and promoted apoptosis rate, but miR-876-3p inhibitor reversed the effects of circTLK1 knockdown. In addition, silencing of circTLK1 overtly restrained the growth of transplanted tumors in vivo, and inhibited immune escape. In addition, circTLK1 interacted with miR-876-3p, and SRSF7 was concluded to be the target gene of miR-876-3p. Conclusion: In this study, we researched the inhibitory effect of circTLK1knockdown on NSCLC progression and immune escape, and further elucidated the potential regulatory mechanism of circTLK1/miR876-3p/SRSF7 axis.

Although more attention has been paid to microplastics (MPs) pollution in environment, research on the synthetic influence of microplastic and heavy metals remains limited. To help fill this information gap, we investigated the adsorption behavior of virgin polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVCMPs) (≤450 µm white spherical powder) on cadmium (II). The effects on seed germination, seedling growth, photosynthetic system, oxidative stress indicators of lettuce, and changes in Cd bioavailability were evaluated under Cd2+ (25 μmol/L), PVCMPs (200 mg/L), and PVCMP-Cd combined (200 mg/L + 25 μmol/L) exposures in hydroponic system. The results demonstrated that the PVCMPs effectively adsorbed Cd ions, which validated by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and the Langmuir isotherm models, indicating the sorption of Cd2+ on the PVCMPs was primary chemisorption and approximates monomolecular layer sorption. Compared to MPs, Cd significantly inhibits plant seed germination and seedling growth and development. However, Surprising improvement in seed germination under PVCMPs-Cd exposure was observed. Moreover, Cd2+ and MPs alone or combined stress caused oxidative stress with reactive oxygen species (ROS) including H2O2, O2- and Malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation in plants, and substantially damaged to photosynthesis. Abstract Ubiquitin-specific protease 4 (USP4) represents a potential oncogene involved in various human cancers. Nevertheless, the biological roles and precise mechanism of USP4 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) progression are not understood. Here, USP4 expression was found to be markedly upregulated in ESCC tumor tissues and cells. Loss- and gain-of-function assays suggested that USP4 silencing inhibited ESCC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, while USP4 overexpression promoted these behaviors. Consistently, USP4 silencing repressed tumor growth and metastasis in an ESCC nude mouse model in vivo. As a target molecule of USP4, transforming growth factor-β-activated kinase 1 (TAK1) also showed high expression in ESCC. Moreover, we observed that USP4 specifically interacted with TAK1 and stabilized TAK1 protein levels via deubiquitination in ESCC cells. Importantly, USP4 promotes ESCC proliferation, migration, and invasion via the MEK/ERK signaling pathway and can be inhibited by U0126. Neutral red (NR), an inhibitor of USP4 can suppress ESCC progression in vitro and in vivo. Overall, this study revealed that USP4/TAK1 plays crucial roles in ESCC progression by modulating proliferation, migration, and invasion, and USP4 might be a potential therapeutic target in ESCC.

Abstract Background This meta-analysis compares the efficacy of unilateral biportal endoscopic transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (UBE-TLIF) to conventional interbody fusion in lumbar degenerative diseases (LDD). Methods An extensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. Research related to UBE-TLIF published up to November 2022 was reviewed. The relevant articles were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, as well as an evaluation of the quality of the data extraction literature. Meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.3 software. Results This meta-analysis included six high-quality case–control trials (CCTs) involving 621 subjects. The clinical outcomes assessment showed no statistical differences in complication rates, fusion rates, leg pain VAS scores, or ODI scores. After UBE-TLIF, low back pain VAS scores were significantly improved with less intraoperative blood loss and a shorter hospital stay. A longer time was required for UBE-TLIF, however. Conclusion Despite the lack of sufficient high quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in this study, the results of this meta-analysis suggest that UBE-TLIF is more effective than open surgery in terms of length of stay, blood loss reduction during surgery, and improved low back pain after surgery. Nevertheless, the evidence will be supplemented in the future by more and better quality multicenter randomized controlled trials.

Abstract Background Acute coronary syndromes (ACS) are the leading cause of global death. Optimizing mortality risk prediction and early identification of high-risk patients is essential for developing targeted prevention strategies. Many researchers have built machine learning (ML) models to predict the mortality risk in ACS patients. Our meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the predictive value of various ML models in predicting death in ACS patients at different times. Methods PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched systematically from database establishment to March 12, 2022 for studies developing or validating at least one ML predictive model for death in ACS patients. We used PROBAST to assess the risk of bias in the reported predictive models and a random-effects model to assess the pooled C-index and accuracy of these models. Results Fifty papers were included, involving 216 ML prediction models, 119 of which were externally validated. The combined C-index of the ML models in the validation cohort predicting the in-hospital mortality, 30-day mortality, 3- or 6-month mortality, and 1 year or above mortality in ACS patients were 0.8633 (95% CI 0.8467–0.8802), 0.8296 (95% CI 0.8134–0.8462), 0.8205 (95% CI 0.7881–0.8541), and 0.8197 (95% CI 0.8042–0.8354), respectively, with the corresponding combined accuracy of 0.8569 (95% CI 0.8411–0.8715), 0.8282 (95% CI 0.7922–0.8591), 0.7303 (95% CI 0.7184–0.7418), and 0.7837 (95% CI 0.7455–0.8175), indicating that the ML models were relatively excellent in predicting ACS mortality at different times. Furthermore, common predictors of death in ML models included age, sex, systolic blood pressure, serum creatinine, Killip class, heart rate, diastolic blood pressure, blood glucose, and hemoglobin. Conclusions The ML models had excellent predictive power for mortality in ACS, and the methodologies may need to be addressed before they can be used in clinical practice.

The transmission of high-frequency signals over long distances depends on the ionosphere’s reflective properties, with the selection of operating frequencies being closely tied to variations in the ionosphere. The accurate prediction of ionospheric critical frequency foF2 and other parameters in low latitudes is of great significance for understanding ionospheric changes in high-frequency communications. Currently, deep learning algorithms demonstrate significant advantages in capturing characteristics of the ionosphere. In this paper, a state-of-the-art hybrid neural network is utilized in conjunction with a temporal pattern attention mechanism for predicting variations in the foF2 parameter during high- and low-solar activity years. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM), which is capable of extracting spatiotemporal features of ionospheric variations, are incorporated into a hybrid neural network. The foF2 data used for training and testing come from three observatories in Brisbane (27°53′S, 152°92′E), Darwin (12°45′S, 130°95′E) and Townsville (19°63′S, 146°85′E) in 2000, 2008, 2009 and 2014 (the peak or trough years of solar activity in solar cycles 23 and 24), using the advanced Australian Digital Ionospheric Sounder. The results show that the proposed model accurately captures the changes in ionospheric foF2 characteristics and outperforms International Reference Ionosphere 2020 (IRI-2020) and BiLSTM ionospheric prediction models.

This study aims to investigate the dynamic changes in daily step counts under different housing systems and further explore the effects of housing system on the body conformation, carcass traits, meat quality, and serum biochemical parameters of a Chinese indigenous chicken breed. At 60 d of age, 300 Jiuyuan Black male chickens with similar body weights in each housing system were further raised until the age of 150 d. At 90, 120, and 150 d of age, in both cage-reared and free-range systems, the top 20 chickens with the highest step counts measured using pedometers and the bottom 20 chickens with the lowest step counts were designated as the cage high-steps group (CHS), the cage low-steps group (CLS), the free-range high-steps group (FHS), and the free-range low-steps group (FLS), respectively. The results show that, at any age stage, the average daily steps (ADS) and total steps (TS) of the FHS group are significantly higher than the other three groups (p < 0.05). The TS of almost all groups showed an overall downward trend as the age increased. Increased exercise volume results in reduced shank length (90 d), breast width (90 d), and keel length (150 d) (p < 0.05). Only birds at 90 d of age from the FHS and FLS groups exhibited lower live body weight, carcass weight, half-eviscerated weight, eviscerated weight, breast muscle weight, leg muscle weight, and percentage of eviscerated weight than the CLS group (p < 0.05). Birds from the FHS group showed the highest heart weight values but the lowest abdominal fat weight values among these four groups (p < 0.05). Both the breast and leg muscle samples from the FHS group displayed higher dry matter and shear force than those from the CHS and CLS groups (p < 0.05). The FHS group displayed the lowest intramuscular fat among the four groups (p < 0.05). The creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels in chickens of all age stages were almost observed to rise with increased physical activity. In conclusion, free-range chickens with more exercise volume exhibited an elevated heart weight and reduced abdominal fat but showed negative effects on some body measurements and carcass traits. These results can provide a theoretical basis for the selection of different housing systems for Chinese indigenous chickens.

Kaplan turbine units can adjust their blades to achieve wider outputs without a significant loss of efficiency. The combination of guide vane angle (GVA) and blade angle (BA) is selected based on efficiency curves obtained from cam tests. However, the vibration characteristics are not considered in the test. The vibration and flow characteristics are complex with different combinations of guide vane and blade angles. Different cam relation selection principles lead to varying machine vibration and flow characteristics. In this research, the flow and vibration characteristics were obtained by means of field test and numerical simulation. Vibration, pressure pulsation, and other stability indicators have been extracted and investigated under off-cam conditions. The flow and variation rules of different indicators have been thoroughly researched. The findings suggest that the magnitude of vibration in the X direction surpassed that in the Y direction for the head cover, upper frame, and lower frame under 22 experimental conditions. The disparity between the head cover and upper frame in both directions was not significant, whereas a substantial contrast existed between the lower frame in the X and Y directions. The calculation results indicate that when the guide vane angle was small, vortices appeared near the high-pressure edge of the runner in the vaneless region and caused disorganized flow lines in the runner, and this complex vortex behavior led to multiple frequency components in the pressure pulsation frequency domain. The conclusions provide references for the designers of Kaplan turbine units and improves the operating safety of Kaplan turbine power stations.

In this article, a miniaturized and highly stable frequency-selective rasorber (FSR) incorporating an embedded transmission window is designed. This FSR consists of a lossy layer loaded with resistors, an air layer, and a bandpass layer. The lossy layer is provided with a rectangular, square ring structure loaded with four 180 Ω resistors and four quadrilateral metal plates. The four metal plates are connected to the four corners of the inner ring around the square ring and are radially distributed along the diagonal. The bandpass layer is a square metal patch that a cross-ring slot structure is loaded inside of, and the cross points lie in the direction along the diagonal of the unit. The inner boundary of the cross-ring is composed of two mutually perpendicular and long rectangular elements. This FSR shows an embedded transmission window from 3.63 GHz to 3.80 GHz and has a transmission rate of 93% at 3.72 GHz. Moreover, both sides of the transmission band, namely, 1.86–3.35 GHz and 3.99–8.28 GHz, have an absorption rate of more than 80% and bilateral relative bandwidth of more than 50%. In addition, this structure exhibits excellent miniaturization performance, polarization insensitivity, and angular stability. Finally, a prototype of the designed FSR is processed and measured. The measured results are basically consistent with the simulation results.

In the process of locating mixed far-field and near-field sources, sparse nonlinear arrays (SNAs) can achieve larger array apertures and higher degrees of freedom compared to traditional uniform linear arrays (ULAs) with the same number of sensors. This paper introduces a Modified Symmetric Nested Array (MSNA), which can automatically generate the optimal array structure with the maximum continuous lags for a given number of sensors. To effectively address mixed source localization, we designed an estimation algorithm based on high-order cumulants and the subarray partition method, applied to the MSNA. Firstly, a specialized fourth-order cumulant matrix, relevant only to Direction of Arrival (DOA) information, is constructed for the DOA estimation of mixed sources. Then, peak searching using the estimated DOA information enables the estimation of the distance parameters, effectively separating mixed sources. The algorithm has moderate computational complexity and provides high resolution and estimation accuracy. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that, with the same number of physical sensors, the proposed MSNA provides more continuous lags than existing arrays, offering higher degrees of freedom and estimation accuracy.

Introduction: The stress-strain relationship of clays characterized by strain hardening exhibits varying curves under different confining pressures and dry densities.Methods: Considering the viscoelastic properties of clays, a normalized viscoelastic model of strain-hardening clay was established based on fractional derivatives, and normalization factors were proposed.Results: The experimental results showed that the stress-strain relationship of the clay was strain hardening. It shows that Chengdu clay has better normalization conditions. Furthermore, the normalized analysis of this clay through the viscoelastic normalization model revealed that the straight line of normalized data displayed a goodness-of-fit of over 0.98. The obtained values were consistent with experimental results, suggesting the reasonability of the normalized strain-hardening parameters and elastic moduli.Discussion: In addition, the superiority of the developed model was verified by testing the strain-hardening clays in Wuhan, China and Bangkok, Thailand. After analyzing the strain-hardening parameters and normalization factors of our model, it was found that the slope of the normalized line can accurately reflect the strain-hardening ability of the clay. These findings demonstrated that the proposed normalization factor is preferred for a normalized viscoelastic model. It shows that the model proposed in this paper has clearer physical meaning and advancement.

The severity of the pandemic and its consequences on health and social care systems were quite diverse and devastating. COVID-19 was associated with an increased risk of neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders after SARS-CoV-2 infection. We did a cross-sectional study of 3 months post-COVID consequences of 178 Cuban subjects. Our study has a unique CUBAN COVID-19 cohort of hospitalized COVID-19 patients and healthy subjects. We constructed a latent variable for pre-health conditions (PHC) through Item Response Theory (IRT) and for post-COVID neuropsychiatric symptoms (Post-COVID-NPS) through Factor Analysis (FA). There seems to be a potential causal relationship between determinants of CIBD and post-COVID-NPS in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The causal relationships accessed by Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) revealed that PHC (p < 0.001) and pre-COVID cognitive impairments (p < 0.001) affect the severity of COVID-19 patients. The severity of COVID-19 eventually results in enhanced post-COVID-NPS (p < 0.001), even after adjusting for confounders (age, sex, and pre-COVID-NPS). The highest loadings in PHC were for cardiovascular diseases, immunological disorders, high blood pressure, and diabetes. On the other hand, sex (p < 0.001) and pre-COVID-NPS including neuroticism (p < 0.001), psychosis (p = 0.005), cognition (p = 0.036), and addiction (p < 0.001) were significantly associated with post-COVID-NPS. The most common neuropsychiatric symptom with the highest loadings includes pain, fatigue syndrome, autonomic dysfunctionalities, cardiovascular disorders, and neurological symptoms. Compared to healthy people, COVID-19 patients with pre-health comorbidities or pre-neuropsychiatric conditions will have a high risk of getting severe COVID-19 and long-term post-COVID neuropsychiatric consequences. Our study provides substantial evidence to highlight the need for a complete neuropsychiatric follow-up on COVID-19 patients (with severe illness) and survivors (asymptomatic patients who recovered).

Background: Corn peptides, a novel food prepared from corn gluten meal (CGM) by enzymatic hydrolysis or microbial fermentation, have attracted considerable interest owing to their various bioactive properties. However, the underlying mechanism of corn peptides attenuate non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unclear. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effect of corn peptides in NAFLD and to decipher the underlying mechanisms. Design: NAFLD was induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) for 10 weeks. Corn peptides were administered during the period. Human hepatocellular carcinomas (HepG2) cells induced by free fatty acids were used for this mechanism study. Results: Corn peptides alleviated HFD-induced histopathological changes, disorders of lipid metabolism, and mitochondrial damage. Moreover, corn peptides blocked mitophagy suppression by HFD based on the increased LC3, ATG7 expressions, as well as decreased P62 levels. Corn peptides increased the expression of proteins involved in fatty acid β-oxidation, such as PPARα and PGC-1α. Corn peptides also improved the Ser/Thr kinase PINK1 (PINK1) and the E3 ubiquitin ligase Parkin (Parkin) translocation to mitochondria, which is confirmed by immunofluorescence. Furthermore, stable knockdown of PINK1 by PINK1 SiRNA in HepG2 inhibited PINK1-Parkin-associated mitophagy and resulted in lipid accumulation. Conclusion: Corn peptides improved cell injury and ameliorated mitochondrial dysfunction and lipid accumulation via PINK1/Parkin-mediated autophagy in NAFLD. Thus, corn peptides could be a promising nutritional molecule with natural functions for preventing NAFLD.

In this paper, a dual-passband frequency selective surface (FSS) with high angular stability and polarization insensitivity is proposed. The unit structure consists of a circular aperture, two annular apertures and four cross apertures. The designed FSS can achieve a double-passband at the interested frequencies of 8.45 GHz and 12.76 GHz with an insertion loss of less than 1 dB, and it can retain a stable transmission characteristic with the incident angle ranging from 0° to 86° for TE mode and from 0° to 83° for TM mode. Good agreement between the experimental results and the simulated response verifies the feasibility of the proposed FSS.

Heterosis refers to the phenomenon where hybrids exhibit superior performance compared to the parental phenotypes and has been widely utilized in crossbreeding programs for animals and crops, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain enigmatic. A better understanding of the gene expression patterns in post-hatch chickens is very important for exploring the genetic basis underlying economically important traits in the crossbreeding of chickens. In this study, breast muscle and liver tissues (n = 36) from full-sib F1 birds and their parental pure lines were selected to identify gene expression patterns and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) at 28 days of age by strand-specific RNA sequencing (ssRNA-seq). This study indicates that additivity is the predominant gene expression pattern in the F1 chicken post-hatch breast muscle (80.6% genes with additivity) and liver (94.2% genes with additivity). In breast muscle, Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis revealed that a total of 11 biological process (BP) terms closely associated with growth and development were annotated in the identified DEG sets and non-additive gene sets, including STAT5A, TGFB2, FGF1, IGF2, DMA, FGF16, FGF12, STAC3, GSK3A, and GRB2. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) annotation presented that a total of six growth- and development-related pathways were identified, involving key genes such as SLC27A4, GLUL, TGFB2, COX17, and GSK3A, including the PPAR signaling pathway, TGF-beta signaling pathway, and mTOR signaling pathway. Our results may provide a theoretical basis for crossbreeding in domestic animals.

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to report the outcomes of single-level bone transport with a unilateral external fixator for treatment of proximal, intermediate and distal tibial bone defects caused by fracture-related infection (FRI) and compare their complications. Methods The clinical records and consecutive X-ray photographs of patients with tibial bone defects treated by single-level bone transport using a unilateral external fixator (Orthofix Limb Reconstruction System) were analyzed retrospectively, from January 2012 to December 2018. Patients were divided into the proximal group (P, n = 19), intermediate group (I, n = 25), and distal group (D, n = 18) according to the location of the tibial bone defect. The Association for the Study and Application of the Method of Ilizarov (ASAMI) standard was applied to assess the bone and functional outcomes and postoperative complications evaluated by the Paley classification. Results A total of 62 participants were included in this study, with a median age of 36 ± 7.14 years. Sixty patients with tibial bone defects caused by FRI were successfully treated by single-level bone transport using a unilateral external fixator, with a mean bone union time (BUT) of 7.3 ± 1.71 months. Abstract Accumulation of inorganic nanoparticles in living organisms can cause an increase in cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a dose-dependent manner. Low doses of nanoparticles have shown possibilities to induce moderate ROS increases and lead to adaptive responses of biological systems, but beneficial effects of such responses on metabolic health remain elusive. Here, we report that repeated oral administrations of various inorganic nanoparticles, including TiO2, Au, and NaYF4 nanoparticles at low doses, can promote lipid degradation and alleviate steatosis in the liver of male mice. We show that low-level uptake of nanoparticles evokes an unusual antioxidant response in hepatocytes by promoting Ces2h expression and consequently enhancing ester hydrolysis. This process can be implemented to treat specific hepatic metabolic disorders, such as fatty liver in both genetic and high-fat-diet obese mice without causing observed adverse effects. Our results demonstrate that low-dose nanoparticle administration may serve as a promising treatment for metabolic regulation.

The existing classification methods of LiDAR point cloud are almost based on the assumption that each class is balanced, without considering the imbalanced class problem. Moreover, from the perspective of data volume, the LiDAR point cloud classification should be a typical big data classification problem. Therefore, by studying the existing deep network structure and imbalanced sampling methods, this paper proposes an oversampling method based on stack autoencoder. The method realizes automatic generation of synthetic samples by learning the distribution characteristics of the positive class, which solves the problem of imbalance training data well. It only takes the geometric coordinates and intensity information of the point clouds as the input layer and does not need feature construction or fusion, which reduces the computational complexity. This paper also discusses the influence of sampling number, oversampling method and classifier on the classification results, and evaluates the performance from three aspects: true positive rate, positive predictive value and accuracy. The results show that the oversampling method based on stack autoencoder is suitable for imbalanced LiDAR point cloud classification, and has a good ability to improve the effect of positive class. If it is combined with optimized classifier, the classification performance of imbalanced point cloud is greatly improved.

Cyclic prefixes in joint radar and communication systems based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and low probability of interception lead to weak radar echo masking on the battlefield. To address this problem, a low probability of interception waveform design scheme based on Filter Bank Multi-Carrier (FBMC) with Offset Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (FBMC-OQAM) is proposed in this paper. Mathematical models for the FBMC joint radar and communication waveform, target detection probability, and communication channel capacity are established. Under the radar and communication performance constraints required by the system, a joint optimization problem of minimizing the total transmitted power of the system is designed, and the subcarrier and power allocation scheme are optimized. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm can realize adaptive transmission where the parameters of the transmitting waveform can be optimally designed for the next pulse by utilizing the measured values of the current signal and the channel state information. Moreover, the feasibility and advantages of FBMC as the radar signal are analyzed based on the average ambiguity function. Theoretical analysis and simulation experiments show that the power allocation scheme proposed in this paper can effectively reduce the total transmitted power of the system, to achieve low interception performance compared with the equal power allocation. The FBMC waveform can effectively reduce the sidelobes caused by cyclic prefixes, which improves the radar resolution and information rate.

Objective Leucocyte esterase (LE) strip test is the most rapid, convenient, and cheap method to diagnose chronic periprosthesis joint infection (PJI). However, the determination of LE strip mainly relies on colorimetric method with strong subjectivity, which leads to low diagnostic accuracy. Therefore, we try to convert LE strip images into digital data through the RGB photometric system to achieve objective diagnosis. This method will greatly improve the accuracy of LE strip detection and diagnosis of PJI. Methods From January 2021 to September 2021, 46 patients with suspected PJI after total hip and knee arthroplasty underwent diagnostic joint puncture. After effective joint fluid samples were harvested, they were divided into original fluid and centrifuged fluid for LE strip detection. Real‐time images of LE strip were taken at 90 s, 3 min, 5 min, 10 min, and 15 min after sampling, and their brightness (Y) was obtained after they were input into an RGB photometric system. Grouping was based on centrifugation, infection, and time points, and then the differences in brightness among groups were compared. The correlation between LE strip image brightness and WBC count was evaluated. Student t‐test was used for the parametric data and chi‐square test for qualitative data. Simple linear regression was utilized to analyze the correlation between brightness and WBC count in each group. Abstract Objective This study described a minimally invasive approach for the management of early-stage avascular necrosis of the femoral head, which integrated arthroscopic intra-articular decompression and core decompression by drilling multiple small holes. Method A total of 126 patients with 185 hip avascular necrosis were included between March 2005 and January 2008, and the hips were classified, based on the Association Research Circulation Osseous staging system, into stage I (n = 43), stage II (n = 114), and stage III (n = 28). Arthroscopic intra-articular inspection and debridement, along with drilling of multiple small holes for core decompression, were performed. The Modified Harris hip score system and radiographs were used to assess the pre- and post-surgery outcomes. Results One hundred and three patients (involving 153 hips) were followed up successfully for an average of 10.7 ± 3.4 years (range: 9–12 years). After surgery, the overall survival rate was 51.6% (79 hips), and the clinical survival rates were 79%, 72%, 52%, 32%, and 10% for patients with stage I, IIa, IIb, IIc, and III, respectively. The outcomes of patients with Association Research Circulation Osseous Stages I or IIA were better than those of other stages, while hips with a large necrotic area had poor results. This approach preserved the original biomechanical strength of the femoral head after core decompression and eliminated arthritis factors in the hip joint. Conclusion The core decompression with multiple small-size holes is an effective method for treating early-stage avascular necrosis of the femoral head, particularly in those with pathological changes in the hip joint. We present a new learning paradigm, that is, cross-supervised learning, and explore its use for cloud detection. The cross-supervised learning paradigm is characterized by both supervised training and mutually supervised training, and is performed by two base networks. In addition to the individual supervised training for labeled data, the two base networks perform the mutually supervised training using prediction results provided by each other for unlabeled data. Specifically, we develop In-extensive Nets for implementing the base networks. The In-extensive Nets consist of two Intensive Nets and are trained using the cross-supervised learning paradigm. The Intensive Net leverages information from the labeled cloudy images using a focal attention guidance module (FAGM) and a regression block. The cross-supervised learning paradigm empowers the In-extensive Nets to learn from both labeled and unlabeled cloudy images, substantially reducing the number of labeled cloudy images (that tend to cost expensive manual effort) required for training. Experimental results verify that In-extensive Nets perform well and have an obvious advantage in the situations where there are only a few labeled cloudy images available for training. Abstract Background In recent years, researchers have proposed a number of adjuvant methods for extended curettage of giant cell tumors of the bone. However, various schemes have significant differences in efficacy and safety. Therefore, this article will describe an empirical expanded curettage protocol, ‘triple clear’, in detail to show the effect of the efficient surgical protocol. Method Patients with Campanacci grades II and III primary GCTB who were treated with either SR (n = 39) or TC (n = 41) were included. Various perioperative clinical indicators, including the therapy modality, operation time, Campanacci grade, and filling material were recorded and compared. The pain level was determined by the visual analog scale. Limb function was determined by the Musculoskeletal Tumour Society (MSTS) score. Follow-up time, recurrence rates, reoperation rates, and complication rates were also recorded and compared. Abstract Background Cortical and subcortical microstructural modifications are critical to understanding the pathogenic changes in frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) subtypes. In this study, we investigated cortical and subcortical microstructure underlying cognitive and language impairments across behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia (svPPA), and nonfluent variant of primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA) subtypes. Methods The current study characterized 170 individuals with 3 T MRI structural and diffusion-weighted imaging sequences as portion of the Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration Neuroimaging Initiative study: 41 bvFTD, 35 nfvPPA, 34 svPPA, and 60 age-matched cognitively unimpaired controls. To determine the severity of the disease, clinical dementia rating plus national Alzheimer’s coordinating center behavior and language domains sum of boxes scores were used; other clinical measures, including the Boston naming test and verbal fluency test, were also evaluated. We computed surface-based cortical thickness and cortical and subcortical microstructural metrics using tract-based spatial statistics and explored their relationships with clinical and cognitive assessments. Results Compared with controls, those with FTLD showed substantial cortical mean diffusivity alterations extending outside the regions with cortical thinning. Tract-based spatial statistics revealed that anomalies in subcortical white matter diffusion were widely distributed across the frontotemporal and parietal areas. Patients with bvFTD, nfvPPA, and svPPA exhibited distinct patterns of cortical and subcortical microstructural abnormalities, which appeared to correlate with disease severity, and separate dimensions of language functions. Conclusions Our findings imply that cortical and subcortical microstructures may serve as sensitive biomarkers for the investigation of neurodegeneration-associated microstructural alterations in FTLD subtypes. Abstract Background Non-small cell cancer (NSCLC) patients with concomitant epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and TP53 mutations have a poor prognosis with the treatment of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), and may benefit from a combination regimen preferentially. The present study aims to compare the benefits of EGFR-TKIs and its combination with antiangiogenic drugs or chemotherapy in patients with NSCLC harboring EGFR and TP53 co-mutation in a real-life setting. Methods This retrospective analysis included 124 patients with advanced NSCLC having concomitant EGFR and TP53 mutations, who underwent next-generation sequencing prior to treatment. Patients were classified into the EGFR-TKI group and combination therapy group. The primary end point of this study was progression-free survival (PFS). The Kaplan–Meier (KM) curve was drawn to analyze PFS, and the differences between the groups were compared using the logarithmic rank test. Univariate and multivariate cox regression analysis was performed on the risk factors associated with survival. Results The combination group included 72 patients who received the regimen of EGFR-TKIs combined with antiangiogenic drugs or chemotherapy, while the EGFR-TKI monotherapy group included 52 patients treated with TKI only. The median PFS was significantly longer in the combination group than in the EGFR-TKI group (18.0 months; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 12.1–23.9 vs. 7.0 months; 95% CI: 6.1–7.9; p

Abstract Purpose The study was aimed at evaluating the bioequivalence and safety of oseltamivir phosphate for suspension, provided by Shenzhen Beimei Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. and manufactured by Hetero Labs Limited, and the reference product TAMIFLU® in healthy Chinese subjects. Methods A single-dose, randomized, two-phase, self-crossed model was adopted. Among 80 healthy subjects, 40 subjects in the fasting group and 40 subjects in the fed group. Subjects in the fasting group were randomized into two sequences according to the proportion of 1:1, each given 75 mg/12.5 mL of Oseltamivir Phosphate for Suspension or TAMIFLU®, and cross-administered after 7 days. Postprandial group is the same as fasting group. Results The Tmax of TAMIFLU® and Oseltamivir Phosphate for Suspension in the fasting group were 1.50 h and 1.25 h, which in the fed group were both 1.25 h. Geometrically adjusted mean ratios of the PK parameters of Oseltamivir Phosphate for Suspension along with TAMIFLU® under fasting and postprandial conditions were in the range of 80.00–125.00% at the 90% confidence interval (CI). The 90% CI of Cmax, AUC0-t, AUC0-∞ for fasting group and postprandial group were (92.39,106.50), (94.26,100.67), (94.32,100.89) and (93.61,105.83),(95.64,100.19),(96.06,102.66). Among the subjects on medication, a total of 18 subjects reported 27 adverse events, all of which were treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs), six of these TEAEs were rated as grade 2 in severity and the rest were as grade 1. The number of TEAEs in the test product and the reference product were 14,13 respectively. Conclusion Two Oseltamivir phosphate for suspensions are safe and bioequivalent.

Objective: Multivariate signal (MS) analysis, especially the assessment of its information transmission (for example, from the perspective of network science), is the key to our understanding of various phenomena in biology, physics and economics. Although there is a large amount of literature demonstrating that MS can be decomposed into space-time-frequency domain information, there seems to be no research confirming that multivariate information transmission (MIT) in these three domains can be quantified. Therefore, in this study, we attempted to combine dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) and parallel communication model (PCM) together to realize it. Methods: We first regarded MS as a large-scale system and then used DMD to decompose it into specific subsystems with their own intrinsic oscillatory frequencies. At the same time, the transition probability matrix (TPM) of information transmission within and between MS at two consecutive moments in each subsystem can also be calculated. Then, communication parameters (CPs) derived from each TPM were calculated in order to quantify the MIT in the space-time-frequency domain. In this study, multidimensional electroencephalogram (EEG) signals were used to illustrate our method. Results: Compared with traditional EEG brain networks, this method shows greater potential in EEG analysis to distinguish between patients and healthy controls. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the feasibility of measuring MIT in the space-time-frequency domain simultaneously. Significance: This study shows that MIT analysis in the space-time-frequency domain is not only completely different from the MS decomposition in these three domains, but also can reveal many new phenomena behind MS that have not yet been discovered.

Glioma is a common type of brain tumor. Current treatment for glioma includes surgical resection, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and tumor-treating fields. The application of immunotherapy to treat glioma is still far from satisfactory in the clinic. Here, we review the mechanisms of immunotherapy for glioma (including immune checkpoint inhibitor, chimeric antigen receptor-T-cell, tumor vaccine, and oncolytic virus) and the results of completed clinical trials, and will discuss the current status of immunotherapy and possible future directions.

Nuclides pollution and its biological effects are of great concern, especially for bryophytes during their terrestrial adaptation. Understanding PSII activity and electron transport response is vital for comprehending moss abiotic stress reactions. However, little is known about the photosynthetic performance of moss under nuclide treatment. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the chlorophyll fluorescence of Racomitrium japonicum L. The moss was subjected to Sr2+ solutions at concentrations of 5, 50, and 500 mg/L to evaluate chlorophyll a fluorescence using the OJIP test. Moderate and high Sr2+ stress led to inner cell membrane dissolution and reduced chlorophyll content, indicating impaired light energy absorption. At 5 mg/L Sr2+, fluorescence kinetics showed increased light energy capture, energy dissipation, and total photosynthetic driving force, thus stimulating transient photosynthetic activity of PSII and improving PSI reduction. Linear electron transfer and PSII stability significantly decreased under moderate and high Sr2+ stress, indicating potential photosynthetic center damage. Cyclic electron transfer (CEF) alleviated photosynthetic stress at 5 mg/L Sr2+. Thus, low Sr2+ levels stimulated CEF, adjusting energy flux and partitioning to protect the photosynthetic apparatus. Nevertheless, significant damage occurred due to inefficient protection under high Sr2+ stress.

Sepsis ranks among the most common health problems worldwide, characterized by organ dysfunction resulting from infection. Excessive inflammatory responses, cytokine storms, and immune-induced microthrombosis are pivotal factors influencing the progression of sepsis. Our objective was to identify novel immune-related hub genes for sepsis through bioinformatic analysis, subsequently validating their specificity and potential as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in an animal experiment involving a sepsis mice model. Gene expression profiles of healthy controls and patients with sepsis were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and analysis of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) was conducted. Subsequently, weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was used to analyze genes within crucial modules. The functional annotated DEGs which related to the immune signal pathways were used for constructing protein–protein interaction (PPI) analysis. Following this, two hub genes, FERMT3 and CD3G, were identified through correlation analyses associated with sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) scores. These two hub genes were associated with cell adhesion, migration, thrombosis, and T-cell activation. Furthermore, immune infiltration analysis was conducted to investigate the inflammation microenvironment influenced by the hub genes. The efficacy and specificity of the two hub genes were validated through a mice sepsis model study. Concurrently, we observed a significant negative correlation between the expression of CD3G and IL-1β and GRO/KC. These findings suggest that these two genes probably play important roles in the pathogenesis and progression of sepsis, presenting the potential to serve as more stable biomarkers for sepsis diagnosis and prognosis, deserving further study.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to observe the effect of the accordion technique (AT) during the distraction phase on chondrogenesis and bone regeneration in a rat femoral distraction osteogenesis (DO) model, and investigate its potential mechanism for reducing the total treatment time of DO.Methods: Fifty-four male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats that were specific-pathogen-free (SPF) were subjected to DO surgery on the right femur. The distraction rate was 0.5 mm/day for 10 days, following a latency period of 5 days. Rats were randomly divided into Control (no AT, n = 18), Group LA (low amplitude with AT, n = 18), and Group HA (high amplitude with AT, n = 18) according to different AT protocols in the distraction phase. Rats were respectively euthanized by anesthesia overdose at 2, 4 and 6 weeks of the consolidation phase, and the femurs were harvested. Digital radiography, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), biomechanical tests, and histomorphological analysis were used to assess the quality of regenerated bone in the distraction area.Results: Digital radiographic, micro-CT, biomechanical tests, and histological analysis revealed an increase in early-stage callus formation (p < 0.05) and improved blood supply to the callus tissue in Group LA, as compared to both the Control and Group HA. The enhanced differentiation of fibrous and cartilaginous tissue into bone tissue was also observed in Group LA, leading to improved strength and stiffness (p < 0.05) of the regenerated bone at 6 weeks of the consolidation phase. The angiogenic (hypoxia-inducible factor—1α (HIF—1α) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), p < 0.05) and osteogenic (runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), osteocalcin (OCN) and osteopontin (OPN), p < 0.05) biomarkers were higher expressed in Group LA at 2 and 4 weeks of consolidation phase, whereas decreased at 6 weeks of consolidation phase.Conclusion: The application of AT with low amplitude during the distraction phase can enhance chondrogenesis and bone regeneration by activating the angiogenesis factor pathway and upregulating the expression of osteogenic-related biomarkers such as HIF-1α, VEGF, RUNX2, OCN, and OPN.

Objective Imaging measurements allow assessment of the mechanical alignment before and after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The changes in radiographic parameters in each period of time within 1 year after TKA has been poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to examine the timing and causes of imaging changes in lower extremity force lines after total knee arthroplasty with mechanical alignment. Methods A total of 93 mechanically‐aligned TKA were radiographically examined before, 3 days, 3 months, and 1 year after surgery. Radiographic parameters included hip‐knee angle (HKA), lateral distal femoral angle (LDFA), medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA), knee joint line orientation (KJLO), ankle joint line orientation (AJLO), the knee joint line relative to ankle joint line angle (KJLTA) and midpoints of the ankle distance (MAD). Paired t‐test were used to analyze the changes of these imaging parameters, By establishing a simple tibial model, the time points of changes in the imaging parameters after TKA was determined, with an attempt to understand the post‐TKA changes in these imaging parameters. Results Statistically significant differences were found between the preoperative data and the data measured 3 days after surgery in HKA, LDFA, MPTA, MAD, KJLTA, AJLO (P 0.05). Significant differences were revealed between the data measured 3 months and those collected 1 year after surgery in LDFA, MPTA, AJLO, KJLTA (P 0.05). The tibial model was made to look into the changes in postoperative imaging parameters. ΔMAD and postoperative AJLO were calculated to verify the model and hypothesis. Conclusions Postoperative changes in radiographic parameters and tibial models showed that the lower extremities were in an unnatural state within 1 year after TKA. The changes in the lower extremities force line were the results of the gradual adaptation of the lower extremities to TKA and the lateral swing of the extremities (3°) after surgery. Imaging data 1 year after surgery should be taken into account in the explanation of post‐TKA changes in lower limb force lines.

Abstract Background Patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) with lymph node metastasis may be misclassified as pN0 due to an insufficient number of lymph nodes examined (LNE). The purpose of this study was to confirm that patients with ESCC are indeed pN0 and to propose an adequate number for the correct nodal stage using the nodal staging score (NSS) developed by the beta‐binomial model. Methods A total of 1249 patients from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database between 2000 and 2017, and 1404 patients diagnosed with ESCC in our database between 2005 and 2018 were included. The NSS was developed to assess the probability of pN0 status based on both databases. The effectiveness of NSS was verified using survival analysis, including Kaplan–Meier curves and Cox models. Results Many patients were misclassified as pN0 based on our algorithm due to insufficient LNE. As the number of LNE increased, false‐negative findings dropped; accordingly, the NSS increased. In addition, NSS was an independent prognostic indicator for pN0 in patients with ESCC in the SEER database (hazard ratio [HR] 0.182, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.046–0.730, p = 0.016) and our database (HR 0.215, 95% CI 0.055–0.842, p = 0.027). A certain number of nodes must be examined to achieve 90% of the NSS. Conclusions NSS could determine the probability of true pN0 status for patients, and it was sufficient in predicting survival and obtaining adequate numbers for lymphadenectomy.

Abstract Objective Minimal invasive approach has been increasingly used in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and more is expected of early rehabilitation in terms of pain release and recovery of knee function. The approach type is one of the major factors that determines the early rehabilitation after TKA. The purpose of this study is to determine whether mini‐subvastus approach (MSVA) is superior to the traditional medial parapatellar approach (MPA) in TKA. Methods From 2018 to 2019, a randomized double‐blinded prospective study was conducted on 58 patients who underwent simultaneous bilateral TKA. The subjects included eight men and 50 women, with an average age of 65 years. One side was randomized using MSVA and the other side using MPA. Visual analog scale (VAS), operative duration, recovery time to straight leg raising (SLR), range of motion (ROM), HSS score, release rate of lateral retinaculum, satisfaction rate were recorded and compared. Paired‐samples T test were used for quantitative data and chi‐square test for qualitative data. Results There was no statistical difference in the ratio of left and right sides, preoperative ROM, VAS, HSS score, muscular strength of lower limbs, KL grade, operative order, and operative duration between the two groups. The average ROM (118.91 ± 8.21 vs. 107.60 ± 7.99, t = 14.320, p = 0.0000) and HSS score (72.03 ± 4.55 vs. 61.22 ± 4.36, t = 13.095, p = 0.0000) on POD 3, VAS in rest and motion on POD 1 and 3, the recovery time to SLR (1.17 ± 0.38 vs. 3.09 ± 0.76, t = 19.902, p = 0.0000), and the satisfaction rate on POD 1 (96.55% vs. 74.14%, χ2 = 9.9251, p = 0.0016) were superior in the MSVA group over MPA group. ROM in rest and motion and HSS score on POD 30 had no difference. The release rate of lateral retinaculum was less in the MSVA group than in the MPA group. The mean value of HKA, FFC, and FTC and the proportion of outliers did not differ significantly between the two groups. Conclusions Compared with MPA, MSVA can make ROM of knee and SLR recover earlier, reduce postoperative pain after TKA, improve the early postoperative satisfaction and reduce the lateral release rate. MSVA can be used as a favorable measure in the concept of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS).

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk factors of transport gap bending deformity (TGBD) in the treatment of critical-size bone defect (CSBD) after the removal of the external fixator. Methods From January 2008 to December 2019, 178 patients with bone defects of the lower extremity caused by infection were treated by bone transport using a unilateral external fixator in our medical institution. TGBD was defined as the bone callus in the distraction area with a deviation to the force line of the femur (> 10°) or tibia (> 12°) after removal of the external fixator. The Association for the Study and Application of the Method of Ilizarov (ASAMI) standard was applied to assess the bone and functional outcomes. After the data were significant by the T-test or Pearson’s Chi-square test was analyzed, odds ratios were calculated using logistic regression tests to describe factors associated with the diagnosis of TGBD. Results A total of 178 patients were enrolled in the study, with a mean follow-up time of 28.6 ± 3.82 months. The positive result of the bacteria isolated test was observed in 144 cases (80.9%). The rate of excellent and good in the bone outcomes (excellent/good/fair/poor/failure, 41/108/15/14/0) was 83.7%, and 92.3% in the functional results (excellent/good/fair/poor/failure, 50/98/16/14/0) according to the ASAMI criteria. TGBD after removal of external fixator occurred in twenty-two patients (12.3%), including 6 tibias, and 16 femurs. Age > 45 years, BMI > 25 kg/m2, femoral defect, diabetes, osteoporosis, glucocorticoid intake, duration of infection > 24 months, EFT > 9 months, EFI > 1.8 month/cm were associated significantly with a higher incidence of TGBD in the binary logistic regression analysis (P 25 kg/m2 (69.0%), diabetes (59.5%), glucocorticoid intake (54.7%). In the multivariate logistic regression analyses, the following factors were associated independently with TGBD, including age > 45 years, BMI > 25 kg/m2, femoral defect, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Conclusions Bone transport using a unilateral external fixator was a safe and practical method in the treatment of CSBD caused by infection. The top five risk factors of TGBD included femoral defect, BMI > 25 kg/m2, duration of bone infection > 24 months, age > 45 years, and diabetes. Age > 45 years, BMI > 25 kg/m2, femoral defect, osteoporosis, and diabetes were the independent risk factors. The higher incidence of TGBD may be associated with more risk factors.
