Abstract The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a simple and inexpensive new marker of insulin resistance that is being increasingly used for the clinical prediction of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Nevertheless, there are only a few comparative studies on its predictive capacity for MetS versus those using the traditional homeostasis model assessment (HOMA). We conducted a cross-sectional study using a database from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999 March to 2020 pre-pandemic period). Using statistical methods, we compared the predictive abilities of the TyG index and HOMA (including HOMA of insulin resistance [HOMA-IR] and HOMA of beta-cell function [HOMA-β]) for MetS. A total of 34,195 participants were enrolled and divided into the MetS group (23.1%) or no MetS group (76.9%) according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) diagnostic criteria. After applying weighted data, the baseline characteristics of the population were described. Following the exclusion of medication influences, the final count was 31,304 participants. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that while distinguishing between MetS and no MetS, the TyG index had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.827 (sensitivity = 71.9%, specificity = 80.5%), and the cutoff was 8.75, slightly outperforming HOMA-IR (AUC = 0.784) and HOMA-β (AUC = 0.614) with a significance of P

Abstract Background Whether patients with cT1 − 2N1M0 breast cancer can benefit from postoperative radiotherapy (RT) after receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) has been controversial. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore whether postoperative RT can benefit this group of patients in terms of survival. Methods We used Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) data to conduct a retrospective review of women with cT1 − 2N1M0 breast cancer diagnosed between 20 and 80 years of age who received NAC between 2010 and 2015. Our study compared the impact of postoperative RT on overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) in breast cancer patients using propensity score matching (PSM) and performed subgroup analysis. Results This study finally included 1092 cT1 − 2N1M0 breast cancer patients. Regardless of the patient’s PSM status, postoperative RT was significantly associated with OS of cT1- 2N1M0 breast cancer patients who received NAC. Specifically, the 10-year OS rate was 78.7% before PSM matching, compared with 71.1% in patients who did not receive postoperative RT, and the difference was more significant after PSM matching, which was 83.1% and 71.1% respectively. However, postoperative RT did not significantly benefit CSS in patients with cT1 − 2N1M0 breast cancer who received NAC. The 10-year CSS rate was 81.4% VS 76.2% (P = 0.085) before PSM matching and 85.8% VS 76.2%(P = 0.076) after matching. Due to the intersection of OS and CSS curves, this restricted mean survival time (RMST) method was chosen as a supplement. After 60 months, the OS difference in RMST between the postoperative RT group and the non-radiotherapy (noRT) group was 7.37 months (95%CI: 0.54–14.21; P = 0.034), and the CSS difference was 5.18 months (95%CI: -1.31-11.68; P = 0.118). Subgroup analysis found that in patients with right-sided breast cancer, postoperative RT improved the patient’s OS (HR = 0.45, 95%CI: 0.21–0.95, P = 0.037) and CSS (HR = 0.42, 95%CI: 0.18–0.98, P = 0.045). Conclusions Our results showed that additional postoperative RT improved the OS of cT1 − 2N1M0 breast cancer patients who received NAC, but failed to improve their CSS. It is worth noting that in the subgroup analysis of patients with right-sided breast cancer, we observed significant improvements in OS and CSS. And further prospective studies are still needed to verify the effect of postoperative RT in different subgroups.

Abstract Background Leukemia is the tenth most common cause of cancer death worldwide and one of the most important causes of disability. To understand the current status and changing trends of the disease burden of leukemia at the global, regional, and national levels, and to provide a scientific basis for the development of leukemia prevention and treatment strategies. Methods Based on open data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD 2019), R software was used to calculate estimated annual percentage changes to estimate trends in the age‐standardized incidence (ASIR) and the age‐standardized disability‐adjusted life years (DALY) rate due to leukemia and its major subtypes from 1990 to 2019. Results In 2019, globally, the number of incidences and DALYs of leukemia were 643.6 × 103 (587.0 × 103, 699.7 × 103) and 11,657.5 × 103 (10529.1 × 103, 12700.7 × 103), respectively. The ASIR (estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) = −0.37, 95%UI −0.46 to −0.28) and the age‐standardized DALY rate (EAPC = −1.72, 95%UI −1.80 to −1.65) of leukemia showed a decreasing trend from 1990 to 2019. The APC model analysis showed that the age effect of leukemia risk was a “U”‐shaped distribution of relative risk (RR) with increasing age from 1990 to 2019, globally. The time effect was an increase in incidence rate with increasing years but a decrease in DALY rate with increasing years. The cohort effects of both incidence and DALY rates tended to increase and then decrease with the development of the birth cohort. In 1990 and 2019, smoking, high body‐mass index, occupational exposure to benzene, and occupational exposure to formaldehyde were risk factors for DALY in leukemia, especially in areas with high SDI. Conclusions From 1990 to 2019, the disease burden of leukemia showed a decreasing trend, but it is worth noting that its overall severity is still very high. The disease burden of leukemia varies greatly from region to region, and exclusive strategies for the prevention and treatment of leukemia should be developed according to the economic and cultural development of each region.

Abstract Endometrial cancer (EC) is a common gynecological tumor in females with an increasing incidence over the past few decades. Alcohol consumption has been linked to the occurrence of various cancers; However, epidemiological studies have shown inconsistent associations between alcohol consumption and EC risk. In order to avoid the influence of potential confounding factors and reverse causality in traditional epidemiological studies, we used a method based on genetic principles-Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to test whether there is a causal relationship between alcohol consumption and EC. MR analysis was conducted using publicly available summary-level data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Fifty-seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were extracted as instrumental variables for alcohol exposure from the GWAS and Sequencing Consortium of Alcohol and Nicotine GWAS summary data involving 941,287 participants of European ancestry. SNPs for EC were obtained from the Endometrial Cancer Association Consortium, the Endometrial Cancer Epidemiology Consortium, and the UK Biobank, involving 121,885 European participants. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was used as the primary method to estimate the causal effect, and the MR-Egger regression and weighted median method were used as supplementary methods. Sensitivity analyses were conducted using the Mendelian Randomization Pleiotropy RESidual Sum and Outlier global test, MR-Egger intercept test, and leave-one-out analysis to evaluate the impact of pleiotropy on causal estimates. Abstract Background As a newly approved immune checkpoint inhibitor in China, serplulimab has been widely used in the immunotherapy of tumors. However, the immune-related adverse events of immune checkpoint inhibitors should not be ignored. Although immune checkpoint inhibitor-induced type 1 diabetes mellitus is a rare complication, it may cause diabetic ketoacidosis and endanger the lives of patients. Case presentation This case report describes a 55-year-old male of Han nationality from China diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer with multiple metastases who experienced an adverse event of type 1 diabetes mellitus 68 weeks after receiving serplulimab therapy. The patient presented with typical symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis, including severe thirst, nausea, vomiting, deep respirations, and stupor. Despite the absence of diabetes-related autoantibodies, the patient had extremely low levels of insulin and C-peptide release. Other potential causes of diabetes were ruled out, confirming the condition as serplulimab-induced immune checkpoint inhibitor-induced type 1 diabetes mellitus. After aggressive treatment to correct diabetic ketoacidosis, the patient’s blood glucose levels stabilized and symptoms of diabetes improved significantly, although long-term insulin maintenance therapy was necessary. Conclusion This case highlights a rare, late-onset adverse event of immune checkpoint inhibitor-induced type 1 diabetes mellitus that may be overlooked during treatment with serplulimab. The monitoring of blood glucose levels and early signs and symptoms of diabetes cannot be relaxed at the late stage of treatment, even if patients do not have elevated blood glucose levels before and during the middle stage of treatment.

Abstract Background Abnormalities in glucose and lipid metabolism contribute to the progression and exacerbation of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Fish oil and probiotics are dietary supplements that have the potential to improve glucose and lipid metabolism. However, their efficacy remains unclear in T2DM patients. Methods PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were retrieved to collect randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the efficacy of fish oil or probiotic supplementation in T2DM patients from the database inception to December 13, 2023. Primary outcome indicators encompassed glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and blood lipid profile (triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC). Secondary outcome indicators included inflammatory markers such as tumor necrosis factor -α (TNF-α) and adipocytokine (including leptin and adiponectin). The R software was used for statistical analysis, and GraphPad Prism was used for figure rendering. Results A total of 60 RCTs involving 3845 T2DM patients were included in the analysis. The results showed that the probiotics (Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, Propionibacterium, etc.) were more effective in reducing HOMA-IR than fish oil (Surca = 0.935). Bifidobacterium demonstrated the highest efficacy in reducing HbA1c levels (Surca = 0.963). Regarding lipid metabolism, fish oil was superior to probiotics in lowering TG and TC levels (Surca values of 0.978 and 0.902, respectively). Furthermore, fish oil outperformed probiotics in reducing TNF-α (Surca = 0.839) and leptin (Surca = 0.712), and increasing adiponectin levels (Surca = 0.742). Node-splitting analysis showed good consistency (P > 0.05 for direct, indirect, and network comparison across various interventions). Conclusions In T2DM patients, fish oil was more effective than probiotics in regulating lipid metabolism. Probiotics outperformed fish oil in regulating glucose metabolism particularly; specifically, Bifidobacterium showed higher efficacy in reducing blood glucose.

ObjectiveCurrently, there are no studies showing which neoadjuvant therapy modality can provide better prognosis for patients after pancreatic cancer surgery. This study explores the optimal neoadjuvant therapy model by comparing the survival differences between patients with non-metastatic pancreatic cancer (cT1-4N0-1M0) who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) and neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NARCT).MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 723 patients with cT1-4N0-1M0 pancreatic cancer who received neoadjuvant therapy before surgery from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. After propensity score matching (PSM), we compared the effects of NACT and NARCT on overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) in patients with non-metastatic pancreatic cancer, and then performed subgroup analyze. Finally, we used univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis to explore potential risk factors for OS and CSS in patients with non-metastatic pancreatic cancer treated with preoperative neoadjuvant therapy.ResultBefore PSM, mOS (30.0 months VS 26.0 months, P=0.122) and mCSS (30.0 months VS 26.0 months, P=0.117) were better in patients with non-metastatic pancreatic cancer treated with NACT compared with NARCT, but this was not statistically significant (P>0.05). Abstract Targeting ferroptosis has attracted exponential attention to eradicate cancer cells with high iron‐dependent growth. Increasing the level of intracellular labile iron pool via small molecules and iron‐containing nanomaterials is an effective approach to induce ferroptosis but often faces insufficient efficacy due to the fast drug metabolism and toxicity issues on normal tissues. Therefore, developing a long‐acting and selective approach to regulate ferroptosis is highly demanded in cancer treatment. Herein, a lysosome‐targeted magnetic nanotorquer (T7‐MNT) is proposed as the mechanical tool to dynamically induce the endogenous Fe2+ pool outbreak for ferroptosis of breast cancer. T7‐MNTs target lysosomes via the transferrin receptor‐mediated endocytosis in breast cancer cells. Under the programmed rotating magnetic field, T7‐MNTs generate torques to trigger endogenous Fe2+ release by disrupting the lysosomal membrane. This magneto‐mechanical manipulation can induce oxidative damage and antioxidant defense imbalance to boost frequency‐ and time‐dependent lipid peroxidization. Importantly, in vivo studies show that T7‐MNTs can efficiently trigger ferroptosis under the magnetic field and play as a long‐acting physical inducer to boost ferrotherapy efficacy in combination with RSL3. It is anticipated that this dynamic targeted strategy can be coupled with current ferroptosis inducers to achieve enhanced efficacy and inspire the design of mechanical‐based ferroptosis inducers for cancer treatment.

ObjectivesThe choice of the debridement method is very important for the healing of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), but the relative effectiveness of different debridement methods in the healing of DFUs remains unclear. This study conducted a network meta-analysis of the relative healing effectiveness of different debridement methods in patients with DFUs.MethodsWe performed a literature search in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library from database inception up to 30 June 2023 for screening randomized controlled trials on the healing effectiveness of debridement in DFUs. Outcome measures included ulcer healing rate and ulcer area reduction rate. The Cochrane Risk Bias Tool, version 2.0, was used to assess the risk of bias in the included trials. R software was used for performing statistical analysis and GraphPad Prism was used for image plotting.ResultsA total of 19 randomized controlled trials were included, and 900 patients with DFUs were assessed in this analysis. The proteolytic fraction from the latex of Vasconcellea cundinamarcensis (P1G10) in enzymatic debridement showed the best ulcer healing rate (SURCA = 0.919) when compared with the standard of care (SOC) group, with a mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of 1.40 (0.57, 2.36). Kiwifruit extract demonstrated the best effect on the ulcer area reduction rate (SURCA = 0.931), when compared with that in the SOC group, with an MD and 95% CI of 0.47 (0.27, 0.66).ConclusionEnzymatic debridement was superior to other debridement methods in terms of ulcer healing rate and ulcer area reduction rate in patients with DFUs. Aiming at the shortcomings of the path generated by the artificial potential field (APF) method, such as local minimum, target unreachability, and low path smoothness, an improved artificial potential field method is proposed. First, to reduce the collision risk and planning difficulty, based on known environmental information such as the location of obstacles and targets, the area with fewer obstacles is selected as the priority area for path planning. Second, to improve the path smoothness and reduce the computation amount, an adaptive step-size adjustment method based on the distance and angle relationship with obstacles within the prediction range is proposed. Third, in view of the effect on each other between obstacle, local minimum, and unsmooth path, a multi-target model considering the size and influence range of obstacles and an improved potential field function are proposed on the basis of the identified planning priority area. Finally, in order that the path is smooth enough to be tracked by autonomous mobile robots, a safe driving corridor without collision with obstacles is constructed on the planned path, and a trajectory fully constrained to the safe driving corridor is generated using the quadratic programming method. The simulation comparison experiments are carried out on matlab simulation software and the smoothness of IAPF is improved by an average of 97.3% as compared to traditional APF and 45.19% as compared to DWA. The sum of the proposed IAPF path planning and optimization time is improved by 45.1% on average compared to DWA path planning time.

IntroductionGlobal climate change can affect the sensitivity of tree radial growth to climate factors, but the specific responses of tree radial growth to microclimate along the altitudinal gradient in the long term are still unclear.MethodsIn this study, the tree-ring width chronologies of Pinus tabuliformis Carr. in Shanxi Province of China were studied at three altitude gradients (1200-1300 m (low altitude), 1300-1400 m (medium altitude) and 1400-1500 m (high altitude)) during 1958-2017.ResultsThe results showed that (1) the climate background could be divided into two periods based on the Mann-Kendall test analysis: 1958–1996 was a stable period (mean annual temperature (MAT)=10.25°C, mean annual precipitation (MAP)=614.39 mm), and 1997–2017 was a rapid change period (MAT=10.91°C, MAP=564.70 mm), indicating a warming and drying trend in the study region. (2) The radial growth of P. tabuliformis at different altitudes showed inconsistent variation patterns. The tree radial growth at low and medium altitudes (CV=27.01% for low altitude and CV=24.69% for medium altitude) showed larger variation amplitudes during the rapid change period than that in the stable period (CV=12.40% for low altitude and CV=18.42% for medium altitude). In contrast to the increasing trend, the tree radial growth rates at the high altitude showed a decreasing trend across years. (3) In the stable period, the radial growth of P. tabuliformis at the low altitude showed a significantly negative response to temperature and a positive response to precipitation in May and June. The tree radial growth at the medium altitude was positively related to precipitation in June and minimum temperature in February. The tree growth at the high altitude was mainly positively correlated with the temperature in May and August. In the rapid change period, the radial growth of P. tabuliformis at the low altitude was affected by more meteorological factors than that in the stable period. Medium-altitude trees were positively influenced by precipitation in June and minimum temperature in January, whereas high-altitude trees responded positively to wind speed in February. (4) Along altitudinal gradients, tree radial growth was more related to temperature than precipitation in the stable period. The tree radial growth at the high altitude during the rapid change period was only affected by wind speed in February, whereas the tree radial growth at low and medium altitudes was mainly affected by temperature to a similar extent during the two periods.DiscussionThe study indicated that tree growth-climate response models could help deeply understand the impact of climate change on tree growth adaptation and would be beneficial for developing sustainable management policies for forest ecosystems in the transition zone from warm-temperate to subtropical climates.

Progranulin (PGRN) plays an important role in influenza virus infection. To gain insight into the potential molecular mechanisms by which PGRN regulates influenza viral replication, proteomic analyzes of whole mouse lung tissue from wild-type (WT) versus (vs) PGRN knockout (KO) mice were performed to identify proteins regulated by the absence vs. presence of PGRN. Our results revealed that PGRN regulated the differential expression of ALOX15, CD14, CD5L, and FCER1g, etc., and also affected the lysosomal activity in influenza virus infection. Collectively these findings provide a panoramic view of proteomic changes resulting from loss of PGRN and thereby shedding light on the functions of PGRN in influenza virus infection.

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of disability and mortality worldwide and a significant global burden. Many lines of evidence suggest complex remodeling responses to cardiovascular disease, such as myocardial ischemia, hypertension and valve disease, which lead to poor clinical outcomes, including heart failure, arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death (SCD). The mechanisms underlying cardiac remodeling are closely related to reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inflammation. Myeloid differentiation protein 1 (MD1) is a secreted glycoprotein known as lymphocyte antigen 86. The complex of MD1 and radioprotective 105 (RP105) is an important regulator of inflammation and is involved in the modulation of vascular remodeling and atherosclerotic plaque development. A recent study suggested that the expression of MD1 in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) patients is decreased compared with that in donor hearts. Therefore, MD1 may play an important role in the pathological processes of cardiovascular disease and have potential clinical value. Here, this review aims to discuss the current knowledge regarding the role of MD1 in the regulation of cardiac pathophysiology.

Abstract Giant magnetostrictive injector using giant magnetostrictive material acting an electronic controlled injector may be one new promising injector to acquire adjustable injection rates while maintaining large injection quantity. An electronic controlled injector driven by a giant magnetostrictive actuator was designed through combining the driving requirement and output characteristics of the material. To promote responding speed of the coil current, the driving voltage with open-hold-fall type waveform was employed just like using in an electromagnetic injector. Simulation model for the injection characteristic of the injector was established using AMEsim software and verified using experimental results collected by the single injection meter. From simulation and experimental results, designed giant magnetostrictive injector showed good performances as maximum spray rate of 4.5 L/min and minimum spray pulse width of 0.21 ms, and realized the boot shape injection when generated by the designed voltage wave. Furthermore, duration time and amplitude of the pilot spray part in a boot shape injection were respectively adjusted through changing the dwell time and opening time. The boot shape injection reached by the giant magnetostrictive injector can reach quite accurate control of fuel injection and then promote fuel efficiency effectively.

BackgroundIncreased arterial stiffness is common in patients with diabetes, and inflammation is one of the main causes of increased arterial stiffness. Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) are novel inflammatory markers that are reproducible, widely available, and easy to measure, and are associated with low costs. This study sought to investigate the predictive value of these novel inflammatory markers in patients with diabetes having arterial stiffness.MethodsWe retrospectively included inpatients with diabetes mellitus from the Endocrinology Department of the Chengdu Fifth People’s Hospital from June 2021 to May 2022 and collected data on their general information, biochemical indicators, and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). After propensity matching, the risk relationship between PLR, NLR, and MLR and arterial stiffness was assessed in the recruited patients.ResultsA total of 882 hospitalized patients with diabetes were included in this study and categorized into the low baPWV (507 cases) or high baPWV group (375 cases) based on the baPWV. After propensity matching, there were 180 patients in all in the high and low baPWV groups. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed that high PLR, NLR, and MLR were independently associated with an increased risk of arterial stiffness in patients with diabetes. In the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the NLR area under the curve (AUC) was 0.7194 (sensitivity = 84.4%, specificity = 51.1%) when distinguishing low baPWV and high baPWV in patients with diabetes, which was higher than that for PLR AUC (0.6477) and MLR AUC (0.6479), and the combined diagnosis for AUC.ConclusionsNLR was superior to PLR, and MLR and combined diagnosis have certain predictive values that indicate the increase in arterial stiffness in patients with diabetes. These predictive values can help with the early identification of increased arterial stiffness in patients with diabetes.

Glucose and lipid metabolism disorders caused by insulin resistance (IR) can lead to metabolic disorders such as diabetes, obesity, and the metabolic syndrome. Early and targeted intervention of IR is beneficial for the treatment of various metabolic disorders. Although significant progress has been made in the development of IR drug therapies, the state of the condition has not improved significantly. There is a critical need to identify novel therapeutic targets. Mitophagy is a type of selective autophagy quality control system that is activated to clear damaged and dysfunctional mitochondria. Mitophagy is highly regulated by various signaling pathways, such as the AMPK/mTOR pathway which is involved in the initiation of mitophagy, and the PINK1/Parkin, BNIP3/Nix, and FUNDC1 pathways, which are involved in mitophagosome formation. Mitophagy is involved in numerous human diseases such as neurological disorders, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and aging. However, recently, there has been an increasing interest in the role of mitophagy in metabolic disorders. There is emerging evidence that normal mitophagy can improve IR. Unfortunately, few studies have investigated the relationship between mitophagy and IR. Therefore, we set out to review the role of mitophagy in IR and explore whether mitophagy may be a potential new target for IR therapy. We hope that this effort serves to stimulate further research in this area.

Rhodopseudomonas palustris, a purple nonsulfur bacterium, is a bacterium with the properties of extraordinary metabolic versatility, carbon source diversity and metabolite diversity. Due to its biodetoxification and biodegradation properties, R. palustris has been traditionally applied in wastewater treatment and bioremediation. R. palustris is rich in various metabolites, contributing to its application in agriculture, aquaculture and livestock breeding as additives. In recent years, R. palustris has been engineered as a microbial cell factory to produce valuable chemicals, especially photofermentation of hydrogen. The outstanding property of R. palustris as a microbial cell factory is its ability to use a diversity of carbon sources. R. palustris is capable of CO2 fixation, contributing to photoautotrophic conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals. R. palustris can assimilate short-chain organic acids and crude glycerol from industrial and agricultural wastewater. Lignocellulosic biomass hydrolysates can also be degraded by R. palustris. Utilization of these feedstocks can reduce the industry cost and is beneficial for environment. Applications of R. palustris for biopolymers and their building blocks production, and biofuels production are discussed. Afterward, some novel applications in microbial fuel cells, microbial electrosynthesis and photocatalytic synthesis are summarized. The challenges of the application of R. palustris are analyzed, and possible solutions are suggested.

Abstract Plant biomass is a highly abundant renewable resource that can be converted into several types of high-value-added products, including chemicals, biofuels and advanced materials. In the last few decades, an increasing number of biomass species and processing techniques have been developed to enhance the application of plant biomass followed by the industrial application of some of the products, during which varied technologies have been successfully developed. In this review, we summarize the different sources of plant biomass, the evolving technologies for treating it, and the various products derived from plant biomass. Moreover, the challenges inherent in the valorization of plant biomass used in high-value-added products are also discussed. Overall, with the increased use of plant biomass, the development of treatment technologies, and the solution of the challenges raised during plant biomass valorization, the value-added products derived from plant biomass will become greater in number and more valuable.

Abstract Combined foliar application of zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) and selenium (Se) has been practiced in wheat biofortification. However, it remains elusive that whether the combined application affects Zn and Se distribution to grain, the efficacy of biofortification and bioavailability in wheat, due to the accompanying sulphate sources. Selenite and ZnSO4 were applied either alone or simultaneously to foliage of wheat in field, and their impacts on Zn and Se partitioning in plants, enrichment and bioavailability in whole grain, bran and flour, as well as amino acid profile in flour, were closely investigated. Grain yield was not influenced by any of the foliar Zn and Se applications. Grain Zn and Se concentrations reached 58.3–77.9 and 0.30–0.74 mg kg−1 in Zn‐ and Se‐sprayed plants, respectively, and the estimated daily‐absorbed Zn by a reference adult from grain and flour were enhanced by 1.2‐ to 2.4‐fold than the control, as well as 16.8‐fold increase on average for daily Se intake. Combined Zn and Se application led to a 32%–37% reduction in Se concentrations and daily Se intake of whole grain and flour in one of the two seasons when compared with the foliar Se spray alone, which was partly associated with the reduced Se distribution to grains. Alternatively, similar responsive patterns of methionine and cysteine with grain and flour Se concentrations further suggested that zinc sulphate and selenium interactions in Se accumulation act through the metabolism of sulphur‐containing amino acids in wheat plants. Further, the substantial Zn enrichment in flour paralleled to the increase of amino acid profiles such as aspartate, glutamate, glycine and lysine, but not to the total amino acid content. Overall, wheat was successfully biofortified with Zn and Se through combined foliar applications, although an antagonistic impact of ZnSO4 spray on the magnitude of Se biofortification occurred in some cases.

Stem node has been found to be a hub for controlling mineral nutrient distribution in gramineous plants. However, the characteristics of stem nodes associated with whole-plant carbon partitioning in maize (Zea mays L.) and their responses to nitrogen (N) availability remains elusive. Maize plants were grown in greenhouse under low to high N supply. Plant growth, sugar accumulation, and sugar transporters in nodes and leaves, as well as the anatomical structure of nodes, were investigated at vegetative phase. When compared to N-sufficient plants, low-N availability stunted growth and resulted in 49–64% less sugars in leaves, which was attributed to low photosynthesis or the accelerated carbon export, as evidenced by more 13C detected further below leaf tips. Invariably higher sugar concentrations were found in the stem nodes, rather than in the leaves across N treatments, indicating a crucial role of nodes in facilitating whole-plant carbon partitioning. More and smaller vascular bundles and phloem were observed in stem nodes of N-deficient plants, while higher sugar levels were found in the bottom nodes than in the upper ones. Low-N availability upregulated the gene expressions of sugar transporters, which putatively function in nodes such as ZmSWEETs and ZmSUTs at the bottom stem, but suppressed them in the upper ones, showing a developmental impact on node function. Further, greater activity of sugar transporters in the bottom nodes was associated with less sugars in leaves. Overall, these results highlighted that stem nodes may play an important role in facilitating long-distance sugar transport in maize.

Abstract Reactive oxygen species (ROS), a group of oxygen derived radicals and derivatives, can induce cancer cell death via elevated oxidative stress. A spatiotemporal approach with safe and deep‐tissue penetration capabilities to elevate the intracellular ROS level is highly desirable for precise cancer treatment. Here, a mechanical‐thermal induction therapy (MTIT) strategy is developed for a programmable increase of ROS levels in cancer cells via assembly of magnetic nanocubes integrated with alternating magnetic fields. The magneto‐based mechanical and thermal stimuli can disrupt the lysosomes, which sequentially induce the dysfunction of mitochondria. Importantly, intracellular ROS concentrations are responsive to the magneto‐triggers and play a key role for synergistic cancer treatment. In vivo experiments reveal the effectiveness of MTIT for efficient eradication of glioma and breast cancer. By remote control of the force and heat using magnetic nanocubes, MTIT is a promising physical approach to trigger the biochemical responses for precise cancer treatment.

Potassium (K) input is essential for the improvement of soil fertility in agricultural systems. However, organic amendment may differ from mineral K fertilization with respect to modifying the soil K transformation among different fractions, affecting soil K availability. We conducted a 60-day lab incubation experiment to evaluate the response of soil K dynamics and availability in various fractions with a view to simulating crop residue return and chemical K fertilization in an Anthrosol of northwest China. The tested soil was divided into two main groups, no K fertilization (K0) and K fertilization (K1), each of which was subjected to four straw addition regimes: no straw addition (Control), wheat straw addition (WS), maize straw addition (MS), and both wheat straw and maize straw addition (WS+MS). Soil K levels in the available (AK) and non-exchangeable (NEK) fractions were both significantly increased after K addition, following the order of K>WS>MS. Fertilizer K was the most efficient K source, demonstrating a 72.9% efficiency in increasing soil AK, while wheat and maize straw exhibited efficiencies of 47.1% and 39.3%, respectively. Furthermore, K fertilization and wheat and maize straw addition increased the soil AK in a cumulative manner when used in combination. The mobility factor (MF) and reduced partition index (IR) of soil K were used to quantitate the comprehensive soil K mobility and stability, respectively. Positive relationships were observed between the MF and all relatively available fractions of soil K, whereas the IR value of soil K correlated negatively with both MF and all available fractions of soil K. In conclusion, straw amendment could be inferior to mineral K fertilization in improving soil K availability when they were almost equal in the net K input. Crop straw return coupled with K fertilization can be a promising strategy for improving both soil K availability and cycling in soil-plant systems.

Phosphorus (P) recycling and carbon partitioning are crucial determinants of P-use efficiency and grain yield in maize (Zea mays), while a full understanding of how differences in P availability/plant P status affect these two processes underlying yield formation remains elusive. Field experiments were conducted for 3 years to investigate the maize growth, P remobilization, and carbohydrate accumulation in leaves and developing ears of plants receiving low to high P inputs. In plots that 75 kg P2O5 ha-1 and above was applied (corresponding to 7.5 mg kg-1 and higher Olsen-P concentration in 0–20 cm soil layer), no additional response occurred in leaf area, ear growth, and grain yield. Despite the higher P uptake with P fertilization above this threshold, the lack of additional plant growth and yield resulted in decreased P-use efficiency. Regardless of P application rates, P remobilization to the ear during the first half of the grain filling phase preferentially came from the stem (50–76%) rather than from leaves (30–44%), and with a greater proportion in the inorganic P (Pi) form over organic P fractions. Leaf photosynthesis was maintained under P-limiting conditions due to the greater P investment in organic P pools than Pi. More and larger starch granules were found in the bundle sheath cells at silking or 21 days after silking (DAS) than under P-sufficient conditions. The amount of total carbohydrate production and export was lower in the P-deficient plants than the high-P plants, corresponding to decreased leaf size and lifespan. Nonetheless, similar or significantly greater starch levels were observed in both cob and kernels at silking and 21 DAS, implying there was an adequate carbohydrate supply to the developing ears under the diminished kernel sink of the P starvation. In addition, there was a strong correlation between the accumulation rates of carbon and remobilized P in the developing kernels, as well as between carbon and total P. Overall, the results indicated that diminished sink size and lower capacity of carbon deposition may limit yield formation in P-deficient maize, which in turn imposes a feedback regulation on reducing carbon and P remobilization from source leaves. An integrated framework considering post-silking P recycling and carbon partitioning in maize and their effects on grain yield has been proposed.

Incorporating foliar zinc (Zn) spray into existing pesticide application is considered highly cost-effective to biofortify wheat (Triticum aestivum) with Zn. However, the effectiveness of this combined approach in terms of Zn enrichment and bioavailability in grain and its milling fractions is not well examined. Two-year field experiments were conducted in 2017 and 2018 with three sets of foliar applications (nil Zn as control, foliar Zn alone, and foliar Zn plus pesticides) at the anthesis, milk stage, or both. Compared to the control, grain yield was not affected by foliar Zn application alone or combined with pesticides, while the Zn concentrations and bioavailability substantially increased in the whole-grain, bran, and flour irrespective of spray timing. Yield losses by 28%–39% (2018 vs. 2017) led to 7%–18% and 18%–38% increase of Zn density in grain and flour, respectively. Further, such negative responses were uncoupled by foliar spray of Zn or Zn plus pesticides, and absent from the control plants. Nonetheless, grain Zn biofortification was achieved in both low- and high-yield plants with either Zn spray alone or combined with pesticides. Together with the enhanced Zn bioavailability in grain, bran, and flour, the effectiveness of this combined strategy is validated to biofortify wheat with Zn.

Maize grain yield is considered to be highly associated with ear and leaf carbohydrate dynamics during the critical period bracketing silking and during the fast grain filling phase. However, a full understanding of how differences in N availability/plant N status influence carbohydrate dynamics and processes underlying yield formation remains elusive. Two field experiments were conducted to examine maize ear development, grain yield and the dynamics of carbohydrates in maize ear leaves and developing ears in response to differences in N availability. Increasing N availability stimulated ear growth during the critical two weeks bracketing silking and during the fast grain-filling phase, consequently resulting in greater maize grain yield. In ear leaves, sucrose and starch concentrations exhibited an obvious diurnal pattern at both silking and 20 days after silking, and N fertilization led to more carbon flux to sucrose biosynthesis than to starch accumulation. The elevated transcript abundance of key genes involved in starch biosynthesis and maltose export, as well as the sugar transporters (SWEETs) important for phloem loading, indicated greater starch turnover and sucrose export from leaves under N-fertilized conditions. In developing ears, N fertilization likely enhanced the cleavage of sucrose to glucose and fructose in the cob prior to and at silking and the synthesis from glucose and fructose to sucrose in the kernels after silking, and thus increasing kernel setting and filling. At the end, we propose a source-sink carbon partitioning framework to illustrates how N application influences carbon assimilation in leaves, transport, and conversions in developing reproductive tissues, ultimately leading to greater yield.

Larger, and deeper, root systems of new maize varieties, compared to older varieties, are thought to have enabled improved acquisition of soil resources and, consequently, greater grain yields. To compare the spatial distributions of the root systems of new and old maize varieties and their relationships with spatial variations in soil concentrations of available nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), two years of field experiments were performed using six Chinese maize varieties released in different eras. Vertical distributions of roots, and available N, P and K in the 0-60 cm soil profile were determined in excavated soil monoliths at silking and maturity. The results demonstrated that new maize varieties had larger root dry weight, higher grain yield and greater nutrient accumulation than older varieties. All varieties had similar total root length and vertical root distribution at silking, but newer varieties maintained greater total root length and had more roots in the 30-60 cm soil layers at maturity. The spatial variation of soil mineral N (Nmin) in each soil horizon was larger than that of Olsen-P and ammonium-acetate-extractable K, and was inversely correlated with root length density (RLD), especially in the 0-20 cm soil layer. It was concluded that greater acquisition of mineral nutrients and higher yields of newer varieties were associated with greater total root length at maturity. The negative relationship between RLD and soil Nmin at harvest for all varieties suggests the importance of the spatial distribution of the root system for N uptake by maize.

Potential flow over an airfoil plays an important historical role in the theory of airfoil. The governing equation for potential flow is Laplace’s equation. One of Green’s identities can be used to write a solution to Laplace’s equation as a boundary integral. Using distributions of singularity solutions and determining their strength via the boundary conditions is the essence of panel method. This paper introduces a quick prediction method of three-dimensional hydrofoil and propeller performance based on panel method. The surface of hydrofoil and propeller is divided into numbers of quadrilateral panels. Combined sources with doublets singularities will be distributed on the corners of panels. Calculated blade pressure distributions of hydrofoil and propeller agree well with experimental data. Several sample calculations have been included using panel method.
