Objective To discuss the effects of polybrominated diphenyl ethers （PBDEs） exposure in e-waste dismantling region on the human body and provide data support for the identification of environmental health damage to residents in the e-waste dismantling region. Methods Adults in an e-waste dismantling region （exposed group, 54 participants） and a control region （control group, 58 participants） were selected, questionnaires were carried out and blood and urine samples were collected. Blood PBDEs, blood lipids, blood routine, blood lead, urine cadmium, urine chromium and urine nickel were detected. T-test was utilized to compare the differences of PBDEs between the two groups. Multivariate analysis were utilized to compare the differences between the two groups in blood routine indexes. Linear regression was used to analyze the relationship between PBDEs and blood routine. Results Exposure levels of PBDEs were significantly higher in the exposed group （240.00 ng/g, adjusted mass fraction of blood lipids, thereafter） than in the control group （93.00 ng/g, P0.05）, and their reference values were all within normal ranges. Mean platelet volume, plateletcrit, basophils percentage, absolute value of basophils, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration were higher in the exposed group than in the control group （P

Cholestasis is a serious manifestation of liver diseases with limited therapies. Rhubarb, a widely used herbal medicine, has been frequently used at a relatively large dose for treating cholestasis. However, whether large doses are optimal and the therapeutic mechanism remain unclear. To explore these questions, the anti-cholestatic effect of five doses of rhubarb (0.21, 0.66, 2.10, 6.60, and 21.0 g/kg) in an alpha-naphthylisothiocyanate (ANIT)-induced rat model of cholestasis was examined by histopathology and serum biochemistry. A dose-dependent anti-cholestatic effect of rhubarb (0.21-6.6 g/kg) was observed, and an overdose of 21.0 g/kg showed a poor effect. LC-MS-based untargeted metabolomics together with pathway analysis were further applied to characterize the metabolic alterations induced by the different rhubarb doses. Altogether, 13 biomarkers were identified. The dose-response curve based on 9 important biomarkers indicated that doses in the 0.42-6.61 g/kg range (EC20-EC80 range, corresponding to 4.00-62.95 g in the clinic) were effective for cholestasis treatment. The pathway analysis showed that bile acid metabolism and excretion, inflammation and amino acid metabolism were altered by rhubarb in a dose-dependent manner and might be involved in the dose-response relationship and therapeutic mechanism of rhubarb for cholestasis treatment.

Human noroviruses (HuNoVs) are major contributors to acute nonbacterial gastroenteritis outbreaks. Many aspects of HuNoVs are poorly understood due to both the current inability to culture HuNoVs, and the lack of efficient small animal models. Surrogates for HuNoVs, such as recombinant viral like particles (VLPs) expressed in eukaryotic system or P particles expressed in prokaryotic system, have been used for studies in immunology and interaction between the virus and its receptors. However, it is difficult to use VLPs or P particles to collect or isolate potential ligands binding to these recombinant capsid proteins. In this study, a new strategy was used to collect HuNoVs binding ligands through the use of ice nucleation protein (INP) to display recombinant capsid proteins of HuNoVs on bacterial surfaces. The viral protein-ligand complex could be easily separated by a low speed centrifugation step. This system was also used to explore interaction between recombinant capsid proteins of HuNoVs and their receptors. In this system, the VP1 capsid encoding gene (ORF2) and the protruding domain (P domain) encoding gene (3’ terminal fragment of ORF2) of HuNoVs GI.1 and GII.4 were fused with 5’ terminal fragment of ice nucleation protein encoding gene (inaQn). The results demonstrated that the recombinant VP1 and P domains of HuNoVs were expressed and anchored on the surface of Escherichia coli BL21 cells after the bacteria were transformed with the corresponding plasmids. Both cell surface displayed VP1 and P domains could be recognized by HuNoVs specific antibodies and interact with the viral histo-blood group antigens receptors. In both cases, displayed P domains had better binding abilities than VP1. This new strategy of using displayed HuNoVs capsid proteins on the bacterial surface could be utilized to separate HuNoVs binding components from complex samples, to investigate interaction between the virus and its receptors, as well as to develop an oral vaccine for HuNoVs.

Purpose: To examine the visual outcomes in patients with macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachments with intentional submacular fluid retention after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) or PPV/scleral buckle surgery (PPV/SB)., Methods: Patients with macula-off retinal detachments were included if they had a PPV or PPV/SB without drainage retinotomy or perfluorocarbon liquid to flatten the retina., Results: The mean age of the patients was 65.0 years. The mean presenting vision was 20.0 Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) letters. Six months after repair, the vision improved to 62.9; 75.4% of patients had 20/40 or better at best achieved visual acuity. Pseudophakic eyes had better vision compared with phakic eyes ( P = 0.049). Patients younger than 80 years had better best achieved vision ( P = 0.0118) compared with patients 80 years or older. Patients with initial vision better than or equal to 20/100 had better best achieved vision ( P = 0.016) compared with those with initial vision worse than 20/100., Conclusion: Leaving submacular fluid after macula-off retinal detachments surgery was not detrimental for visual outcomes or anatomic success for retinal detachments repair and may lead to better visual outcomes for patients, specifically for those patients younger than 80 years, who are pseudophakic, and have presenting vision 20/100 or better.

Background: This study investigated factors associated with fellow eye horseshoe retinal tear (HST) development in consecutive patients with a presenting eye HST., Materials and Methods: Medical records were reviewed for patients with initial HSTs between 2015 and 2017 and 24 factors were analyzed. Logistic regression was used to assess factors associated with fellow eye HST development., Results: In total, 242 patients with an HST were identified with mean follow-up of 68.3 months. Four associations with fellow eye HST development were identified: (1) presence of fellow eye lattice degeneration, (2) subsequent presenting eye HSTs, (3) fellow eye vitreous hemorrhage at presenting eye HST occurrence, (4) OCT-determined stage 3 fellow eye posterior vitreous detachment at presenting eye HST occurrence., Conclusion: Four clinical findings associated with fellow eye HST development following presenting eye HST were identified. Background: To describe the occurrence, rate of geographic atrophy (GA) expansion, and changes in visual acuity (VA) after reabsorption of subfoveal pigment epithelial detachments (PED)., Methods: Included patients had reabsorption of a PED followed by GA. Patients underwent clinical examination with SD-OCT. Images were classified by size with grading occurring post reabsorption. VA was recorded pre-reabsorption, post-reabsorption, and over time., Results: The average age of the cohort, consisting of 22 eyes from 19 participants, was 86.9 years at reabsorption. Prior to reabsorption, the VA was 20/80 and then declined to 20/200 (p = 0.001) with an average follow-up time of 30.2 months. There was no significant VA change after the initial loss with reabsorption. The average initial lesion size of GA was 0.987 mm 2 with an average growth rate of 0.274 mm/year., Conclusions: This study longitudinally examined GA growth rate in patients with reabsorbed PEDs. These patients started with a drusenoid or serous PED, had a dramatic reduction in vision and GA that occurred in place of the PED. These GA lesions have a slower growth rate and a smaller area of onset compared to rates previously reported in the literature. They do not show significant VA change after reabsorption. We describe the lasing characteristics of an external-cavity 1.3-microm-wavelength traveling-wave semiconductor laser that uses a tilted-stripe optical amplifier. It was found that within a 45-nm-wavelength tuning range the power level does not suffer any discontinuous change. The lasing spectrum remains single mode within a 35-nm range, and the linewidth is less than 50 kHz. The lasing frequency is stable and changes by only 25 MHz/ degrees C and by approximately 1.6 MHz/mA. For cw operation the intracavity power reaches 24 mW, and for long-pulse operation the power level is as high as 175 mW. The lasing power level exhibits long-term stability. Moreover the intracavity power level is found to be insensitive to the coupled output power.
