Abstract

Background/Aims: ACHIEVE-2/3 - a phase 3, randomized, active-controlled, multicenter study - evaluated the efficacy and safety of albinterferon alfa-2b (albIFN), a genetic fusion polypeptide of albumin and interferon alfa-2b, in patients with genotype 2/3 chronic hepatitis C (CHC). Method(s): In all, 932 patients were randomized 1:1:1 to one of three treatment groups: peginterferon alfa-2a (PEG-IFNalpha-2a) 180 mug qwk, and albIFN 900 and 1,200 mug q2wk for 24 weeks, combined with oral ribavirin 800 mg/d. Randomization was stratified by baseline HCV-RNA >= versus <800,000 IU/mL and genotype 2 versus 3. Primary endpoint: sustained virologic response (SVR; HCV-RNA <15 IU/mL at wk 48). The sample size provided 90% power to demonstrate noninferiority (margin of 12%). Result(s): ACHIEVE-2/3 demonstrated the SVR noninferiority of albIFN 900 mug (P = 0.009) and 1,200 mug (P = 0.006) q2wk versus PEG-IFNalpha-2a 180 mug qwk. By intention-to-treat analysis, SVR rates were 84.8, 79.82, and 80.0% with PEG-IFNalpha-2a, and albIFN 900 and 1,200 mug, respectively. Consistent with previous studies, multivariate analysis identified HCV-RNA <400,000 IU/mL, age <45, BMI <30, genotype 2, normal gamma-glutamyl transferase, high alanine aminotransaminase, no steatosis, fibrosis score 0-2, and Asian region (for PEG-IFNalpha-2a only) as SVR predictors. In the Asian region (n = 271), SVR rates were 95.5, 79.8, and 81.8% with PEG-IFNalpha-2a, and albIFN 900 and 1,200 mug, respectively, versus 80.5, 79.8, and 79.3% in all other regions (n = 662). The incidence of serious (7-8%) or severe (13-16%) AEs, or death (0.3-0.6%) was similar across groups. Discontinuation rates due to AEs were 3.6, 4.8, and 5.5% with PEG-IFNalpha-2a, and albIFN 900 and 1,200 mug, respectively. Severe/serious pulmonary infections and interstitial lung disease were rare, with similar rates across groups. Abstract

Transparent conductive glasses such as thin film transistor (TFT) array and colour filter glasses were recovered from the TFT-liquid crystal display panel wastes by dismantling and sonic cleaning. Noble metals (i.e. platinum (Pt)) and indium tin oxide (ITO) are generally used in the cathode of a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). To reduce the DSSC cost, Pt was replaced with nano nickel-encapsulated carbon-shell (Ni@C) nanoparticles, which were prepared by carbonization of Ni2+-β-cyclodextrin at 673 K for 2 h. The recovered conductive glasses were used in the DSSC electrodes in the substitution of relatively expensive ITO. Interestingly, the efficiency of the DSSC having the Ni@C-coated cathode is as high as 2.54%. Moreover, the cost of the DSSC using the recovered materials can be reduced by at least 24%. Abstract

Surface properties of Ag nanoparticles may not be perturbed when they are filled with the relatively cheap Cu. To better understand how Ag can be coated on Cu, growth of the Cu and Ag bimetal during the temperature-programmed carbonisation (TPC) of Ag+- and Cu2+-β-cyclodextrin (CD) complexes having the Cu/Ag ratios of 0.5, 1 and 2 was studied byin situsynchrotron small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) spectroscopy. The SAXS spectra provide the detailed structural changes corresponding to the growth of Ag and Cu nanoparticles as the Ag+- and Cu2+-CD complexes are carbonised at the temperature range of 363–513 K. It seems that Cu having a relatively high surface free energy is enriched in the core of the cherry-like Cu@Ag bimetal nanoparticles. The Cu@Ag bimetals are encapsulated in the carbon-shell formed from carbon unconsumed in the oxidation of CD during TPC. A rapid growth of the bimetal nanoparticles occurs at 393–423 K. As Ag+and Cu2+are reduced during the CD oxidation, the Ag nanospheres are filled with Cu, and eventually encapsulated in the carbon-shell. Abstract

The effect of cooling rate on the microstructure of Cu80Cr20 alloys was studied by using vacuum non-consumable arc melting, vacuum induction melting, electromagnetic levitation and splat quenching. The microstructure evolution of the Cr-rich were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy. The results showed that nonuniform Cr-rich dendrite distributes on Cu-rich matrix for arc melted alloys and uniform Cr-rich dendrite distributes on Cu-rich matrix for electromagnetic levitation melted alloys and vacuum induction melted alloys. However, the Cr-rich phase show both dendrites and spheroids for splat quenched alloys. This means liquid phase separation occurred during rapid solidification.
