Liquid-alkaline water electrolyzers (LAWEs) use electricity to drive the conversion of water to H2 and O2 gas. These devices benefit from the use of low-cost nickel electrodes and metal-oxide separators, but suffer from lower current densities and higher cell voltages than proton-exchange-membrane water electrolyzers. Identifying the inefficiencies that result in this poor performance is key to mitigating losses and optimizing LAWEs. Here, we report an experimentally-validated 1-D continuum model of a LAWE that elucidates the gradients within the cell, simulates H2 crossover, and projects the energy improvements made possible by modulating the properties of the electrodes and separator. The model captures the Nernstian polarization losses and the distribution of gas- and liquid-phases within the electrodes, enabling quantification of energy losses associated with kinetic, ohmic, and bubble-induced (mass-transport) resistances. Simulations demonstrate that LAWE can achieve energy intensities of 50 kWh kg−1 of H2 at 1 A cm−2 using improved electrode and separator properties.

Proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs) are a promising technology for green hydrogen production; however, interfacial transport behaviors are poorly understood, hindering device performance and longevity. Here, we first utilized finite-gap electrolyzer to demonstrate the possibility of proton transfer through water in PEMWEs. The measured high-frequency resistances (HFRs) exhibit a linear trend with increasing gap distance, where extrapolation shows a lower value compared with HFRs in regular zero-gap electrolyzers, indicating that ohmic resistance could be further reduced. We introduce nanochannels to facilitate mass transport, as evidenced by both liquid-fed and vapor-fed electrolysis. Nanochannel electrodes achieve a voltage reduction of 190 mV at 9 A·cm−2 compared with the Ir-PTEs without nanochannels. Furthermore, nanochannel electrodes show negligible degradation through 100,000 accelerated-stress tests and over 2,000 h of operation at 1.8 A·cm−2 with a decay rate of 11.66 μV·h−1. These results provide new insights into localized transport dynamics for PEMWEs and highlight the significance of interfacial engineering for electrochemical devices.

Two simple processes for enhancing liquid alkaline water electrolyzer performance are demonstrated. Both enhance 3D Ni electrodes by introducing a micron-scale rough structure throughout the bulk of the electrode. Oxidation/reduction relies on a simple thermal treatment cycle to create surface roughening through the volumetric expansion during NiO formation and volume contraction during reduction back to Ni metal. Catalyst infiltration introduces a washcoat of additional metal particles throughout the electrode, by flooding the electrode with catalyst precursor and converting it to micron-scale particles via a reducing thermal treatment. The largest improvement in performance (211 mV at 1.8 A cm−2) is observed for infiltrated NiFe-3x catalyst. For Fe-free Ni-only electrodes, oxidation/reduction provides a larger improvement (157 mV at 1.8 A cm−2) than infiltrated Ni-3X (106 mV at 1.8 A cm−2). For both processes, the observed electrode surface structure and performance is quite sensitive to the thermal treatment temperature.

The imperative shift towards decarbonization necessitates the production of clean hydrogen through water electrolysis, powered by renewable energy sources. Among electrolyzer technologies, proton-exchange-membrane (PEM) systems emerge as a promising option for large-scale hydrogen generation due to their modular design and rapid response, aligning well with the intermittency of renewable energy. In this study, we employ a tape casting method to fabricate microporous layers (MPLs), both as a single layer and as a bilayer over commercial porous transport layers (PTLs), to further enhance performance of water electrolyzers. We demonstrate that microporous layers require adequate pore sizes to facilitate gas removal, preventing gas flooding and preserving electrolyzer performance. Our single layer microporous layers exhibit lower overpotentials compared to commercial sintered Ti PTLs by 142 mV at 4 A·cm⁻2. Moreover, we show that having an effective microporous layer enhances electrolyzer performance irrespective of the substrate used, offering avenues for cost reduction. We also investigate novel PTL structures with reduced tortuosity and integrated MPL fabricated via phase inversion tape casting, resulting in a performance enhancement of 92 mV. Our findings unravel the critical role of microporous layer structures and their impact on electrolyzer performance.

Coupling renewable electricity to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) electrochemically into carbon feedstocks offers a promising pathway to produce chemical fuels sustainably. While there has been success in developing materials and theory for CO2 reduction, the widespread deployment of CO2 electrolyzers has been hindered by challenges in the reactor design and operational stability due to CO2 crossover and (bi)carbonate salt precipitation. Herein, we design asymmetrical bipolar membranes assembled into a zero-gap CO2 electrolyzer fed with pure water, solving both challenges. By investigating and optimizing the anion-exchange-layer thickness, cathode differential pressure, and cell temperature, the forward-bias bipolar membrane CO2 electrolyzer achieves a CO faradic efficiency over 80% with a partial current density over 200 mA cm-2 at less than 3.0 V with negligible CO2 crossover. In addition, this electrolyzer achieves 0.61 and 2.1 mV h-1 decay rates at 150 and 300 mA cm-2 for 200 and 100 h, respectively. Postmortem analysis indicates that the deterioration of catalyst/polymer-electrolyte interfaces resulted from catalyst structural change, and ionomer degradation at reductive potential shows the decay mechanism. All these results point to the future research direction and show a promising pathway to deploy CO2 electrolyzers at scale for industrial applications.

Green hydrogen, produced via water electrolysis using renewable electricity, will play a crucial role in decarbonizing industrial and heavy-duty transportation sectors. Anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) can overcome many of the performance and cost limitations of incumbent technologies, however, still suffer from durability challenges due to oxidative instability of anion-exchange ionomers. Herein, the use of an electro-active porous transport layer as anode (PTL-electrode) is demonstrated to enable efficient and durable AEMWEs. The stainless-steel PTL-electrodes are shown to have superior performance and durability compared to traditional catalyst layers containing ionomer and nanoparticle catalysts. An AEMWE cell operating at 2 A cm−2 for over 600 h exhibited a degradation rate of just 5 µV h−1. During operation, the surface composition of the stainless steel transforms into a mixture of iron and nickel oxyhydroxides, contributing to enhanced oxygen-evolution reaction activity. The combination of experimental work and modeling elucidates how the bulk structure of the PTL-electrode offers an additional design dimension to further improve electrolyzer performance. Lastly, a surface modification strategy is applied to a PTL-electrode to achieve an even higher performing AEMWE (2.3 vs 2.0 A cm−2 at 1.8 V). Overall, this work lays out pathways toward more efficient, durable, and affordable AEMWEs.

Developing efficient and low-cost water electrolyzers for clean hydrogen production to reduce the carbon footprint of traditional hard-to-decarbonize sectors is a grand challenge toward tackling climate change. Bipolar-based water electrolysis combines the benefits of kinetically more favorable half-reactions and relatively inexpensive cell components compared to incumbent technologies, yet it has been shown to have limited performance. Here, we develop and test a bipolar-interface water electrolyzer (BPIWE) by combining an alkaline anode porous transport electrode with an acidic catalyst-coated membrane. The role of TiO2 as a water dissociation (WD) catalyst is investigated at three representative loadings, which indicates the importance of balancing ionic conductivity and WD activity derived from the electric field for optimal TiO2 loading. The optimized BPIWE exhibits negligible performance degradation up to 500 h at 400 mA cm-2 fed with pure water using earth-abundant anode materials. Our experimental findings provide insights into designing bipolar-based electrochemical devices.

Abstract Background Biotransformation of CO2 into high-value-added carbon-based products is a promising process for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. To realize the green transformation of CO2, we use fatty acids as carbon source to drive CO2 fixation to produce succinate through a portion of the 3-hydroxypropionate (3HP) cycle in Cupriavidus necator H16. Results This work can achieve the production of a single succinate molecule from one acetyl-CoA molecule and two CO2 molecules. It was verified using an isotope labeling experiment utilizing NaH13CO3. This implies that 50% of the carbon atoms present in succinate are derived from CO2, resulting in a twofold increase in efficiency compared to prior methods of succinate biosynthesis that relied on the carboxylation of phosphoenolpyruvate or pyruvate. Meanwhile, using fatty acid as a carbon source has a higher theoretical yield than other feedstocks and also avoids carbon loss during acetyl-CoA and succinate production. To further optimize succinate production, different approaches including the optimization of ATP and NADPH supply, optimization of metabolic burden, and optimization of carbon sources were used. The resulting strain was capable of producing succinate to a level of 3.6 g/L, an increase of 159% from the starting strain. Conclusions This investigation established a new method for the production of succinate by the implementation of two CO2 fixation reactions and demonstrated the feasibility of ATP, NADPH, and metabolic burden regulation strategies in biological carbon fixation.

Proton-exchange-membrane unitized regenerative fuel cell (PEM-URFC) is a promising energy storage and conversion device for large-scale and long-term applications. Previous research has primarily focused on materials development studies, with performance and durability not evaluated at relevant conditions. Such an approach becomes insufficient for making URFC technology commercially competitive. In this review, we highlight recent progress on high-performing PEM-URFCs, focusing on electrode engineering, key components, and operating approaches that take realistic operating conditions into consideration. Key components of a membrane electrode assembly (MEA), including catalyst layer, diffusion media, and membrane, which require different optimization strategies, are discussed in this review.

Despite their importance in a wide range of living organisms, self-cleaving ribozymes in the human genome are few and poorly studied. Here, we performed deep mutational scanning and covariance analysis of two previously proposed self-cleaving ribozymes (LINE-1 and OR4K15). We found that the regions essential for ribozyme activities are made of two short segments, with a total of 35 and 31 nucleotides only. The discovery makes them the simplest known self-cleaving ribozymes. Moreover, the essential regions are circular permutated with two nearly identical catalytic internal loops, supported by two stems of different lengths. These two self-cleaving ribozymes, which are shaped like lanterns, are similar to the catalytic regions of the twister sister ribozymes in terms of sequence and secondary structure. However, the nucleotides at the cleavage site have shown that mutational effects on two twister sister-like (TS-like) ribozymes are different from the twister sister ribozyme. The discovery of TS-like ribozymes reveals a ribozyme class with the simplest and, perhaps, the most primitive structure needed for self-cleavage.

Maize is susceptible to hypoxia stress in soils with poor aeration, but the macropores have the potential to improve soil aeration. We studied the impact of artificial macropores on maize performance under poor aeration. Three levels of air-filled porosity (5%, 10% and 15%) were established, and soil columns with (28 vertical artificial macropores with 0.5 mm diameter) or without macropores were created for each level of air-filled porosity with a bulk density of 1.3 g cm-3. Root–macropore interactions were visualized using CT scanning (41 μm in resolution). Our results showed that root length density significantly increased by 114%, as air-filled porosity increased from 5% to 15%. However, when artificial macropores were present, an increase in air-filled porosity had no significant effect on root length density. The treatment of 5% air-filled porosity with macropores significantly increased root length density and root biomass by 108% and 65%, respectively, relative to the treatment of 5% air-filled porosity without macropores, whereas there was no significant difference in root growth between the treatments of 15% air-filled porosity with and without macropores. Compared to the treatment of 5% air-filled porosity with macropores, there was a significant reduction of 49% in the number of macropores colonized by roots under the treatment of 15% air-filled porosity with macropores. Our results demonstrate that macropores provide preferential paths for the colonization of maize roots, thereby promoting root growth under poor aeration. Creating macropores with bio-tillage can serve as a crucial strategy for enhancing crop performance in poorly aerated soils.

Anion-exchange-membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) provide a promising pathway to utilize low-carbon renewable electricity to produce clean hydrogen at high efficiency and purity, while maintaining low system costs compared to incumbent technologies. Though significant progress has been made in developing membranes and catalysts, AEMWEs still require better performance and durability to realize widespread deployment. Here, we overcome these challenges by decoupling anode and cathode polarization behavior via integration of a reference electrode in the membrane-electrode assembly. This measurement identified that the mass-transport losses dominate the cathode overpotential if feeding with electrolytes, while kinetic losses dominate the anode overpotential. These losses are mitigated by varying electrode properties and operating strategies, where a more hydrophobic, optimal loaded cathode, a high porosity anode, and operating with the cathode dry exhibited the best performance. These findings eventually enabled achieving a high-performing and durable complete PGM-free AEMWE operating at 1.5 A cm−2 for over 500 h with negligible degradation, demonstrating significant progress for AEMWEs.

A rationalized interfacial design strategy was applied to tailor the porous transport layer (PTL)-catalyst layer (CL) contact and the PTL bulk-phase architecture. Particularly, at the PTL-CL interface, our results reveal that laser ablated sintered titanium power-based PTLs improve electrolyzer performance at both the H2NEW Consortium baseline catalyst loading of 0.4 mgIr·cm−2 as well as at the ultra-low catalyst loading of 0.055 mgIr·cm−2. Under ultra-low catalyst loadings, the laser ablated PTL demonstrates maximum reduction of 230 mV compared to the commercial PTL at 4 A·cm−2, and reduces by 68 mV at 3.2 A·cm−2 under H2NEW baseline loading. Laser ablation alters the titanium phase at the interface, so it forms more uniform structure like a microporous layer or a backing layer, leading to an increase in the surface area in contact with the catalyst layer while preventing the membrane from deforming into the PTL. Moreover, we reveal that bulk-phase architecture modification of the PTL by ablating patterned pores at the flow field-PTL interface improves mass transport without sacrificing contact at the CL-PTL interface. Overall, laser ablation of the PTL is an effective method to customize interfacial design to enhance proton exchange membrane electrolyzer performance.

While the porous-transport layer (PTL) is a key component in PEM electrolyzers, it is one of the most underexplored due to limited available structures. In this work, we present a novel PTL design for PEM water electrolyzers enabled by a cost-effective, scalable tape-casting technique. A precise control of the PTL pore structure is achieved by incorporating poreformers of various sizes, and by varying the titanium and poreformer ratio. The structures are characterized with SEM and synchrotron X-ray computed tomography imaging techniques. Comprehensive electrochemical performance analysis demonstrates that higher titanium loading provides improved contact at the catalyst-layer/PTL interface but suffers from severe mass-transport losses due to gas bubbles. We solve this mass-transport problem by mixing in large poreformer beads that produce a highly porous structure with excellent gas removal properties yet still maintaining mechanical integrity. The PTL fabricated with 60:40 Ti:PMMA ratio and 60 μm PMMA bead size outperformed the standard commercial Ti powder-based PTL by 62 mV at 4 A/cm2.

Clean hydrogen production requires large-scale deployment of water-electrolysis technologies, particularly proton-exchange-membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs). However, as iridium-based electrocatalysts remain the only practical option for PEMWEs, their low abundance will become a bottleneck for a sustainable hydrogen economy. Herein, we propose high-performing and durable ionomer-free porous transport electrodes (PTEs) with facile recycling features enabling Ir thrifting and reclamation. The ionomer-free porous transport electrodes offer a practical pathway to investigate the role of ionomer in the catalyst layer and, from microelectrode measurements, point to an ionomer poisoning effect for the oxygen evolution reaction. Abstract Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer associated with a poor prognosis. Effective targeted therapy alone or in combination for treating advanced CRC remains to be a major clinical challenge. Here, we propose the therapeutic efficacy and molecular mechanism underlying RC48, a FDA-approved anti-HER2 antibody conjugate via a cleavable linker to the microtubule inhibitor monomethyl auristatin E (MMAE), either alone or in combination with gemcitabine (GEM) in various models of HER2-positive advanced CRC. Our findings demonstrated that HER2 was widely expressed and located on the plasma membrane of CRC patient specimens, PDX xenograft tumors and cell lines. It confirmed that RC48 alone significantly targeted and eradicated HER2 positive CRC tumor in these models. Moreover, we screened a panel of FDA-approved first-line chemotherapy drugs in vitro. We found that GEM exhibited stronger antiproliferative activity compared to the other first-line anti-cancer agents. Furthermore, combination therapy of RC48 and GEM significantly showed synergetic antitumor activity in vitro and in vivo. To gain further mechanistic insights into the combination therapy, we performed RNA-seq analysis. The results revealed that combination treatment of RC48 and GEM regulated multiple signaling pathways, such as PI3K-AKT, MAPK, p53, Foxo, apoptosis, cell cycle and cell senescence, etc., to exert its antitumor activity in CRC cells. Collectively, these preclinical findings demonstrated that RC48 alone or combinational therapy exerted promising antitumor activity, and meriting the preclinical framework for combinational therapy of anti-HER2 drug conjugate drug and chemotherapy drugs for HER2-positive patients with advanced CRC.

In the field of precision agriculture and plant protection, this paper proposes a multi-task classification model named FasterPest to improve the accuracy of rice pest identification. Based on the FasterViT network, this model can identify rice pest species and leaf conditions simultaneously. Specifically, the model first sets up two classification heads for multi-task outputs. It then incorporates a feature fusion module that effectively integrates the base model’s features and the classification heads’ output features using attention mechanisms. The fused features are fed back to the classification heads. To address cases where some pest image features are not distinct, the model leverages the correlation between leaf condition and pest species by introducing a relationship matrix, enhancing the model’s capability to identify rice pests. Experimental results demonstrate that the model performs exceptionally well in recognizing 14 classes of rice pests in the IP102 dataset. Compared to the baseline model, FasterPest shows improvements of 6.90% in Accuracy, 5.93% in Recall, and 5.79% in F1 score. The model exhibits outstanding performance in rice pest identification, with significant potential value for practical applications.

Soil respiration is a critical process that regulates key ecosystem functions such as climate control, nutrient cycling, and plant productivity. Soil texture, nutrient availability, and microbial communities can all influence soil respiration, yet our understanding of their relative importance remains limited. This study aimed to investigate how different factors—like soil texture, nutrient additions, and microbial communities—contribute to soil respiration and define their specific roles in its variability. Using a microcosm experiment with various fertilizers and two soil types (Navarra, a silty clay soil, and Saponi, a sandy soil), we measured changes in both biotic and abiotic factors. A multiple linear regression analysis revealed that, among other biotic and abiotic factors, soil clay content, soluble nitrogen levels, bacterial abundance, and α-diversity significantly impacted soil respiration, together accounting for over 60% of its total variance. Structural equation modeling indicated that microbial communities made the greatest contribution to respiration at 30.84%, followed by soil texture at 19.63%. Overall, biotic factors were found to play a more significant role in driving soil respiration rates compared to abiotic factors, with edaphic properties having a greater influence than fertilizer additions.

Phenazine natural products are a class of colored nitrogen-containing heterocycles produced by various microorganisms mainly originating from marine and terrestrial sources. The tricyclic ring molecules show various chemical structures and the decorating groups dedicate extensive pharmacological activities, including antimicrobial, anticancer, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory, and insecticidal. These secondary metabolites provide natural materials for screening and developing medicinal compounds in the field of medicine and agriculture due to biological activities. The review presents a systematic summary of the literature on natural phenazines in the past decade, including over 150 compounds, such as hydroxylated, O-methylated, N-methylated, N-oxide, terpenoid, halogenated, glycosylated phenazines, saphenic acid derivatives, and other phenazine derivatives, along with their characterized antimicrobial and anticancer activities. This review may provide guidance for the investigation of phenazines in the future.

Summary: We identified and validated a collection of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in Drosophila melanogaster. We show that depletion of the pro-viral circRNA circATP8B(2), but not its linear siblings, compromises viral infection both in cultured Drosophila cells and in vivo. In addition, circATP8B(2) is enriched in the fly gut, and gut-specific depletion of circATP8B(2) attenuates viral replication in an oral infection model. Furthermore, circATP8B(2) depletion results in increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and enhanced expression of dual oxidase (Duox), which produces ROS. Genetic and pharmacological manipulations of circATP8B(2)-depleted flies that reduce ROS levels rescue the viral replication defects elicited by circATP8B(2) depletion. Mechanistically, circATP8B(2) associates with Duox, and circATP8B(2)-Duox interaction is crucial for circATP8B(2)-mediated modulation of Duox activity. In addition, Gαq, a G protein subunit required for optimal Duox activity, acts downstream of circATP8B(2). We conclude that circATP8B(2) regulates antiviral defense by modulating Duox expression and Duox-dependent ROS production.

With a growing demand for electricity, clean hydrogen production and usage can be an asset not only to mitigate emissions but for long-term energy storage as well. Hydrogen gas, a high-density energy carrier, can be made through electrolysis in charging mode and generate electricity via a fuel cell in discharging mode in a unitized regenerative fuel cell (URFC). While URFCs reduce cost by combining the charging and discharging modes into a singular device, switching between modes becomes burdensome, and water management is a major challenge. One way to mitigate these issues is to operate the entire system in the vapor phase. Vaporphase operation simplifies the physics of the system but will introduce losses within the system, primarily ohmic and mass transport during the charging mode. In this study, we explore the performance of a Proton-Exchange-Membrane (PEM)-URFC under vaporphase conditions and the impact of different PEMs, feed gases, and relative humidity on the performance and durability. By tailoring operating conditions and membrane, the vapor-URFC achieves a roundtrip efficiency of 42% and a lifetime of 50,000 accelerated stress test cycles for fully humidified feeds. Discussion of vapor-URFC for energy storage and extensions to look at various applications shows the promise of this technology.

Abstract Background Subjective memory impairment (SMI) is common in older people. The aim of this study was to investigate the factors influencing SMI among older people in China, with specific focus on the interaction effect of midday napping duration and depressive symptoms on the risk of SMI. Methods Using a dataset representative of the Chinese population from a longitudinal study of health and retirement in China, subjects with SMI were screened using the question “how do you feel about your memory now?” and the Mini-Mental State Examination. A logistic regression model was applied to explore the factors affecting SMI. Additive and multiplicative models were used to analyze the interaction effect of midday napping duration and depressive symptoms on the risk of SMI. Results We enrolled 8,254 subjects included and the incidence of SMI was 63.9%. Depressive symptoms, nap time, and physical activity were influencing factors of SMI. Midday napping duration and depressive symptoms had positive additive interaction effects on the risk of SMI. When extended-length naps and depressive symptoms coexisted, the risk of SMI was 1.06 times greater than that for either alone (RERI, relative excess risk due to interaction = 0.27, 95% CI = 0.07–0.43; AP, attributable proportion = 0.14, 95% CI = 0.01–0.23; S, synergy index = 1.06, 95% CI = 0.57–1.62). When short naps and depressive symptoms coexisted, the risk of SMI was 1.2 times higher than that for either alone (RERI = 0.12, 95% CI=-0.14–0.39; AP = 0.13, 95% CI=-0.07–0.22; S = 1.20, 95% CI = 0.79–1.82). Limitations Since this was a cross-sectional study, the cause-and-effect relationships between the associated variables cannot be inferred. Conclusions The interaction effect that exists between nap time and depressive symptoms in older people is important for the identification and early intervention of people at risk for SMI.

Alkaline or hydroxide exchange membrane water electrolysis (HEMWE) is a promising technology for green hydrogen production using platinum group metal-free catalysts and stainless steel, an advantage of alkaline water electrolysis (AWE), and a gasimpermeable membrane, a parallel to proton exchange membrane electrolysis (PEMWE). However, the HEMWE requires supporting electrolytes and there is minimal understanding of their role on the respective reactions. Without SELs, HEMWE performance and durability are worse than PEMWE systems. Herein, consistently feeding potassium hydroxide anolyte, we systematically study the effects of catholyte SELs in HEMWEs including dry vs. wet operation, cation effects, anion effects, and cation/OH ratios on cell potential and stability. We report that (i) hydration of the cathode improves high current density operation by preventing dehydration of the hydroxide exchange membrane (HEM), (ii) there was no correlation between cation type and cell potential, (iii) cell potential and high frequency resistance did not correlate with SEL conductivity, (iv) cathodic carbonate SEL had a significant negative effect on cell performance, (v) increased cation/OH ratio also caused increased cell potentials. Overall, this study concludes that feeding water or potassium hydroxide solution is desirable to improve the AEMWE performance.

Interfacial and bulk properties between the catalyst layer and the porous transport layer (PTL) restrict the iridium loading reduction for proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs), by limiting their mass and charge transport. Using titanium fiber PTLs of varying thickness and porosity, the bulk and interface transport properties are investigated, correlating them to PEMWEs cell performance at ultra-low Ir loadings of ≈0.05 mgIr cm-2 . Electrochemical experiments, tomography, and modeling are combined to study the bulk and interfacial impacts of PTLs on PEMWE performance. It is found that the PEMWE performance is largely dependent on the PTL properties at ultra-low Ir loadings; bulk structural properties are critical to determine the mass transport and Ohmic resistance of PEMWEs while the surface properties of PTLs are critical to govern the catalyst layer utilization and electrode kinetics. The PTL-induced variation in kinetic and mass transport overpotential are on the order of ≈40 and 60 mV (at 80 A mgIr -1 ), respectively, while a nonnegligible 35 mV (at 3 A cm-2 ) difference in Ohmic overpotential. Thus at least 150 mV improvement in PEMWE performance can be achieved through PTL structural optimization without membrane thickness reduction or advent of new electrocatalysts.
