Our objectives were to describe revenue received for feedlot cattle culled for slaughter and associations with reported weekly prices from US beef markets. Observational data on feedlot culls (N = 2,992) were collected from 4 Kansas feedlots over 2 years (2018 to 2020). Weekly prices from various US beef markets were used to evaluate correlations with prices received for culled animals. Descriptive statistics, and linear and generalized linear mixed models, were used to evaluate characteristics of feedlot culls. Musculoskeletal/trauma (49.7%) and respiratory disease (40.9%) were the most common reasons for culling. Culls returned revenue 98.1% of the time; those culled for respiratory disease or “other” reasons returned revenue significantly less frequently (96.7 or 96.3%, respectively) than those culled for musculoskeletal/trauma (99.1%). Mean revenue received [± 95% CI] was 434.81 [427.22 to 442.40] $/animal (culls returning no revenue included); and mean carcass price was 87.40 [86.70 to 88.10] $/hundredweight. Revenue was significantly correlated with several market indices, but most correlations were relatively weak. In this population, national cull cow (Breaker [75% lean]; over 500 lb [227 kg]) prices appeared to be the overall best indicator of feedlot cull prices, with feedlot cull carcasses averaging 74.6% of the weekly cull cow carcass price., The Bovine Practitioner, Vol. 55, No. 1 (2021)

Retention of veterinarians in practice is critical to longterm practice success. Understanding factors influencing satisfaction can provide information for practice managers to positively influence the work environment. The study objective is to identify potential factors influencing job and career satisfaction in veterinarians less than 10 years from graduation. Secondary outcomes include factors influencing current financial, physical, and emotional health. A cross-sectional, anonymous online survey with 82 complete responses was used for analysis. Respondents were representative of recent graduates and most respondents were satisfied with their job (83.0%) and career (84.1%). Both job and career satisfaction were higher when respondents believed they received adequate recognition. Financial health was associated with technician-to-veterinarian ratio, adequate recognition, current debt, and raise frequency. Physical health was associated with length at the current job and current debt. Emotional health was significantly associated with years at the current job, having held an internship, and technician-to-veterinarian ratio. In general, most veterinarians within 10 years of graduation were satisfied with their job and career choice. Several factors influenced job satisfaction, career satisfaction, and financial, physical, and emotional health. Livestock traceability has increasingly become a focus for the USDA, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, high-volume beef-exporting states, and other beef industry stakeholders. The focus on traceability within the United States began after several international animal disease outbreaks and continues to be of importance with African Swine Flu spreading across Asia. Mitigating adverse future disease outbreaks, as well as maintaining export markets through a positive international perception of U.S. beef has become a top priority. Implementing a national disease traceability program would enable the industry to track and reduce the potential losses due to an outbreak. However, such a system comes at a large cost, mainly to cow-calf producers. This study utilizes an equilibrium displacement model (EDM) to determine the impacts of a beef cattle disease traceability system in the United States. Utilizing the EDM allows us to provide a comparison of how the various beef sectors would need to respond to offset the costs of a national disease traceability program.

The fresh produce sector is subject to season-specific market conditions so understanding differential impacts of various factors across marketing periods is important. We analyze the market structure, key factors influencing shipments, and seasonal price relationships in regional apple markets at the shipping-point and terminal-market levels using a symmetric variable threshold autoregressive model that allows threshold bands (which define price ranges considered in shipping decisions) to vary seasonally. We find that transportation costs and seasonality have a significant impact on threshold bands of market pairs and that the impact varies seasonally. This varying band across seasons may represent suppliers who perceive more or less opportunities to adjust their supply between regional markets and gain advantage by being responsive to market conditions.

This paper presents a dynamic form of the almost ideal demand system (AIDS). The static AIDS model was employed to determine long-run equilibrium model and represents the short-run dynamics by an error correction mechanism. This estimation procedure is applied to estimate three kinds of popular meats (red meat, chicken and fish) demand function in Iran. The estimated elasticities of red meat and chicken are found to be price elastic in the long run. While fish is price inelastic in the long run. Iranian government will remove all indirect and direct goods subsidies. It is suggested that government should be careful about chicken and red meat pricing policy to decreasing malnutrition after subsidy removal.

The research reported in this paper created an epidemiological foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) spread model for Ontario. Disease simulations were constructed to reflect three levels of the cattle identification and movement recording system. Outputs generated by the epidemiological model are used to calculate the direct disease control costs of a FMD outbreak. Welfare effects caused by a FMD outbreak are also calculated for each level of cattle traceability using an equilibrium displacement model. Parameter sensitivity was tested for both the epidemiological and economic model results. It is found that the benefits to the beef cattle industry of increasing the ability to trace direct animal contacts during a FMD disease outbreak in Ontario are less than the lowest annual cost estimate of a cattle traceability system as estimated by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
