1. Alterations in health-related fatty acids in buffalo milk after processing to traditional dairy products

Abstract: Milk provides some beneficial fatty acids which in dairy processing are subjected to pasteurization and fermentation. With the aim to assess such changes, aliquot parts of milk from 12 buffaloes were pooled and processed to germinated yoghurt and brined cheese, and to non-germinated curd – the respective samples of raw and dairy material subjected to lipid analysis. The results show that in cheese positive and negative changes are generally balanced, rumenic acid decreasing and other CLAs altered but not total CLA and PUFA; omega ratio and atherogenicity index worsened to little extent, due to adverse change in n-3, myristic and lauric acid. In yoghurt and curd CLA dramatically decreased, excluding rumenic acid; but vaccenic acid increased, though total trans isomers decreased; the worsened n-6/n-3 ratio and atherogenicity index is mostly because of the adverse effect on PUFAn-3 but also on myristic and lauric acid. In all products SFA and MUFA did not change, including palmitic, stearic, and oleic acid. It can be concluded that the decrease of CLA in yoghurt and curd is partially compensated by the increase in the vaccenic acid, while cheese making altered individual isomers but not groups of beneficial acids.

Abstract: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a common but underdiagnosed systemic skeletal disease. It is characterized by calcifications affecting mainly the spinal anterior longitudinal ligament. In the majority of cases, the patients are asymptomatic, but cervical osteophytes can sometimes cause hoarseness, dysphagia (DISHphagia) and even dyspnea.

Abstract: In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

Abstract: This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract: Carl Menger founded the Austrian School of economics at the end of the 19th century. He rejected some of the main ideas of the German Historical School in his work Investigations into the Method of the Social Sciences with Special Reference to Economics (1881). The submitted paper presents the main implications of the investigations on the theory of economic history with a special reference to the economic history and history of economic thought of the Balkans. The emphasis is on the methodological subjectivism, spontaneous order, rejection of the teleological understanding of the process of economic development, and the application of mathematical models. These principles could be used as a theoretical base of the historical research, though they are widely underestimated in modern economic history.

9. Proton therapy for head and neck cancer therapy: A real-world data case study from Bulgaria

Abstract: Head and neck cancers (HNC) are one of the most severe types of cancer in Europe, accounting for almost 4.5% of all cancer types, according to GLOBOCAN. The incidence is geographically variable, with higher rates observed in Eastern and Southern Europe than in Northern and Western Europe. Proton and photon therapies are both available treatment approaches for head and neck cancer, as each has its own unique advantages, characteristics, and considerations. Proton therapy is the newest one and is considered safer among both. The current study aims to analyse the available data for patients with head and neck cancer treated with proton therapy in Bulgaria based on real-world data generated through AI-based patient registries and the current availability of strategic policy documents ensuring the affordability of proton therapy on a national level. We wanted to explore the feasibility of building a national proton therapy centre based on available patients’ information and strategic policy documents. We conducted a 3-year (2020–2022) combined non-interventional retrospective database study on head and neck cancer using secondary use of real-world data from dynamic patient registries and desktop analysis of strategic policy documents for capacity and financial affordability for proton therapy in Bulgaria. The results show that Bulgaria has a strategic policy document that focuses on the need and funding possibilities for establishing this treatment within the country. However, the country lacks the political will to ensure appropriate funding for it. Building a national proton centre is a feasible investment but needs additional detailed budget impact analysis.

12. Severe Convection at Burgas Airport: Case Study 17 September 2022

Abstract: Convection monitoring and forecasting are crucial for air traffic management as they can lead to the development of intense thunderstorms and hazards such as severe turbulence and icing, lightning activity, microbursts and hail that affect aviation safety. The airport of Burgas is located in southeast Bulgaria on the Black Sea coast and occurrences of intense thunderstorms are mainly observed in the warm season between May and September. This work presents an analysis of severe convection over southeast Bulgaria on 17 September 2022. In the late afternoon, a gust front was formed that reached the Burgas airport with a wind speed exceeding 45 m/s, the record for the past 50 years, damaging the instrument landing system of the airport. To analyse the severe weather conditions, we combine state-of-the-art observations from satellite and radar with the upper-air sounding and surface. The studied period was dominated by the presence of a very unstable air mass over southeast Bulgaria ahead of the atmospheric front. As convection developed and moved east towards Burgas, it had four characteristics of severe deep convection, including gravitational waves at the overshooting cloud top, a cold U-shape, a flanking line and a cloud top temperature below −70 °C. The positive integrated water vapour (IWV) rate of change preceded the lightning activity peak by 30 min. Analysis of integrated vapour transport (IVT) gives higher values by a factor of two compared to climatology associated with the atmospheric river covering the eastern Mediterranean sea.

Abstract: The transformation of the educational model is directly linked to the key participants in the educational process. Modern pupils cannot imagine life without the usage of various digital technologies such as mobile devices. Moreover, today’s learners spend more time preparing for school using interactive mobile applications. That defines the purpose of this article: to explore the usage of m-learning applications in the educational process within Bulgarian schools. To achieve that it has been created a survey that consists of 11 questions and was distributed to 140 participants (pupils from Bulgarian schools). The results have shown that 54.28% of respondents use m-learning applications within the classroom and 72.86% of them use m-learning applications for self-study. Additionally, 60% of respondents believe that using such applications would enhance the educational process. This provides ample justification for directing efforts from all stakeholders (educational institutions, educators, and learners) toward wider and more comprehensive integration of these applications in the educational process. From the perspective of future research, there could be endeavors to conduct a more extensive and representative study by trying to utilize cluster sampling in order to overcome the limitations posed by the current research methodology.

Abstract: The aim of the presented study was to establish the conception rate in Bulgarian Murrah buffaloes submitted to estrus synchronization via Presynch/Ovsynch protocol applied in non-breeding and breeding season. The experiment was conducted in 24 buffaloes with at least 40 days postpartum, allotted into two groups according to the treatment season: Group I (n=8) – non-breeding season, Group II (n=16) – breeding season. On day 0 and day 35 after artificial insemination, the buffaloes were examined by transrectal ultrasound to identify ovarian structures and prove pregnancy, respectively. The initial ultrasound examination revealed the presence of a corpus luteum and a follicle with a diameter ≥10 mm in 33.33% (8/24) of all cases, solely a follicle ≥10 mm in 45.84% (11/24) and follicles with a diameter 10 mm.

Abstract: This paper presents an approach to eliminate one of the most common defects in hyperspectral images—the appearance of spiked points at some wavelengths. The elimination of this defect was carried out by means of polynomial regression. The Bayes Information Criterion (BIC) was used to determine the correct order of the polynomial. Comparison between polynomial regression and classical filtration with the Savitsky–Golay method shows the advantage of the proposed approach, from the point of view of eliminating the defect in a local area, without changing the typical behavior of the spectral feature in the affected image pixels.

Abstract: Novel fibrous cellulosic substrates impregnated with meta-polybenzimidazole (PBI)-stabilized carbon nanotubes/zinc oxide with different weight content of ZnO and with the use of dimethylacetamide as dispersant media. The pristine ZnO nanoparticle powder was prepared by plant extract-mediated synthesis using Vaccinium vitis-idaea L. The green synthesized ZnO possesses an average crystallite size of 15 nm. The formation of agglomerates from ZnO NPs with size 250 nm–350 nm in the m-PBI@CNTs/ZnO was determined. The prepared materials were investigated by PXRD analysis, XPS, SEM, EDS, AFM, and TEM in order to establish the phase and surface composition, structure, and morphology of the hybrids. The potential of the synthesized hybrid composites to degrade methylene blue (MB) dye as a model contaminant in aqueous solutions under UV illumination was studied. The photocatalytic results show that in the course of the photocatalytic reaction, the m-PBI@CNTs/ZnO 1:3 photocatalyst leads to the highest degree of degradation of the methylene blue dye (67%) in comparison with the other two studied m-PBI@CNTs/ZnO 1:1 and 1:2 composites (48% and 41%). The antibacterial activity of ZnO nanoparticles and the hybrid CNT materials was evaluated by the RMDA and the dynamic contact method, respectively. The profound antibacterial effect of the m-PBI@CNTs/ZnO hybrids was monitored for 120 h of exposition in dark and UV illumination regimes. The photocatalytic property of ZnO nanoparticles significantly shortens the time for bactericidal action of the composites in both regimes. The m-PBI@CNTs/ZnO 1:2 combination achieved complete elimination of 5.105 CFU/mL E. coli cells after 10 min of UV irradiation.

Abstract: The goal of this study is to synthesize, determine the structure, and examine the antimicrobial properties of novel Cu(II) and Au(III) complexes of 2,4-dithiouracil and its derivatives. These complexes were obtained by mixing aqueous solutions of the corresponding metal salts with the ligand dissolved in DMSO and aqueous NaOH, using a metal-to-ligand ratio of 1:4:2. The structures of the new compounds were analyzed by melting point determination, microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometry (MP-AES) for Cu and Au, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) for S, attenuated total reflection (ATR), solution and solid-state NMR, and Raman spectroscopy. The data for 2,4-dithiouracil obtained from the 1H NMR, 13C NMR, distortionless enhancement by polarization transfer spectrum (DEPT-135), proton–proton homonuclear correlation spectrum (1H-1H COSY), long-range 1H-13C heteronuclear multiple bond correlation experiment (HMBC), and heteronuclear single quantum coherence spectra (HSQC) aided the interpretation of the NMR data for the gold and copper complexes. Abstract: AbstractRandomized controlled trials (RCTs) are typically conducted in highly selected patient populations to ideally demonstrate unconfounded clinical efficacy of a drug. In the real world, there may be confounding factors, such as comorbidities or less frequent monitoring. It has therefore become standard practice in many countries to validate findings from RCTs against available real-world datasets. The present analysis investigated a real-world evidence (RWE) cohort of Bulgarian patients treated with ribociclib in combination with letrozole or fulvestrant and compared the clinical benefit rate (CBR, defined as complete remission [CR] or partial remission [PR] or stable disease [SD]) and progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) with pivotal RCTs. Data from 812 patients treated between 2018 and 2022 were used. The number of patients at risk was statistically robust to compare PFS and OS during the earlier periods of the real-world data analysis with the corresponding RCTs. Baseline characteristics (age, hormone receptor status, status of newly diagnosed vs. existing, previous treatments, performance status and tumor stage) were largely comparable between the RWE cohort and the RCTs. The RWE cohorts corroborated RCT findings of a CBR benefit of the ribociclib plus letrozole or fulvestrant combination compared to letrozole or fulvestrant alone. In the periods of adequate statistical robustness, PFS and OS were comparable within 95% confidence intervals (CIs) with RCT findings. This analysis found that patients with comparable characteristics use ribociclib in the real-world similarly to what has been investigated in the RCTs. Real-world effectiveness and outcomes of ribociclib combination therapy were comparable with observations from RCTs.

Abstract: In the dynamic yet uncertain environment of Industry 4.0, industrial companies are utilizing the benefits of contemporary technologies in manufacturing by striving to implement optimization models in each stage of the decision-making process. Many organizations are focusing particularly on the optimization of two key aspects of the manufacturing process - production schedules and maintenance plans. This article presents a mathematical model with the main advantage of finding a valid production schedule (if such exists) for the distribution of individual production orders on the available production lines over a specified period. The model further considers the scheduled preventive maintenance activities on the production lines, as well as the preferences of the production planners regarding the start of the production orders and non-use of certain machines. When necessary, it also offers the possibility to make timely changes in the production schedule, and thus to handle the uncertainty as precisely as possible. For the verification of the model, two experiments were conducted (quasi-real and real-life), with data from a discrete automotive manufacturer of locking systems. The results from the sensitivity analysis demonstrated that the model further optimizes the execution times of all orders, and specifically the production lines usage - their optimal load and non-use of unnecessary machines (valid plan with 4 out of 12 lines not used). This allows for cost savings and raises the overall efficiency of the production process. Thus, the model adds value for the organization by presenting a production plan with optimal machine usage and product allocation. If incorporated into an ERP system, it could distinctly save time and streamline the production scheduling process.

Abstract: This paper reviews the potential reason why the fifteen silver Byzantine coins (miliarensia) of Constantine VII with his son and co-Emperor Romanos II (945 – 959), part of the famous Preslav gold treasure buried in 971, could have found their way as a compact sum of money in the medieval Bulgarian capital of Preslav. Arguments are provided in support of the assumption that they were a monetary gift (or part of such a gift) bestowed by the Byzantine government to a Bulgarian aristocrat who was a member of an official Bulgarian delegation which visited Constantinople at some date between 945 and 959. The traditional diplomacy practice of the Byzantine government in that era (described in the treatise of Emperor Constantine VII “On Ceremonies”) to present the members of official foreign delegations to Constantinople with monetary gifts, the amounts of which corresponded to the ranks of the delegation members, is well-known.

Abstract: The aim of the study was to perform histological differentiation of dorsal and ventral musculature of fresh and frozen/thawed carps (Cyprinus carpio). Histological findings of muscle fibres (Myofibra striata) of fresh carps did not show any changes. Single freezing at –10 ºС resulted in extracellular gaps in the central part of some of fibres. After single freezing at –18 ºС, muscle fibres with cell de-struction in the central part were identified while the periphery remained intact. Completely destruc-tured and deformed areas of muscle fibres were demonstrated after single freezing at –27 ºС. Double freezing at –10 ºС resulted in shrinkage, extracellular gaps and fragmentation of fibres, while muscle fibres double-frozen at –18 ºС were impaired, degraded and with visible defects. The histological findings in carp muscle, double-frozen at –27 ºС comprised severely deformed muscle fibres with increased extracellular gaps from degraded muscle tissue. On the basis of findings, it could be con-cluded that double freezing of carps was not an appropriate method of storage and shelf-life exten-sion.

Abstract: The use of biodegradable polyesters derived from green sources and their combination with natural abundantly layered aluminosilicate clay, e.g., natural montmorillonite, meets the requirements for the development of new sustainable, disposable, and biodegradable organic dye sorbent materials. In this regard, novel electrospun composite fibers, based on poly β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and in situ synthesized poly(vinyl formate) (PVF), loaded with protonated montmorillonite (MMT-H) were prepared via electrospinning in the presence of formic acid, a volatile solvent for polymers and a protonating agent for the pristine MMT-Na. The morphology and structure of electrospun composite fibers were investigated through SEM, TEM, AFM, FT-IR, and XRD analyses. The contact angle (CA) measurements showed increased hydrophilicity of the composite fibers incorporated with MMT-H. The electrospun fibrous mats were evaluated as membranes for removing cationic (methylene blue) and anionic (Congo red) dyes. PHB/MMT 20% and PVF/MMT 30% showed significant performance in dye removal compared with the other matrices. PHB/MMT 20% was the best electrospun mat for adsorbing Congo red. The PVF/MMT 30% fibrous membrane exhibited the optimum activity for the adsorption of methylene blue and Congo red dyes.

With this regard, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect from addition of 0.01% essential oils (EO) from Matricaria chamomilla; Rosmarinus officinalis; Lavandula angustifolia; Origanum vulgare; Thymus vulgaris; Hypericum perforatum to the feed of turkey broilers on live body weight, feed consumption, slaughter traits, fatty acid content and meat quality. 38. Influence of Freezing on Muscles of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss): A Histological and Microbiological Study

Abstract: Background: Freezing is a common and ancient method for preservation of foods which is applicable both under household and industrial conditions. The objective of the study was to establish histological and microbiological changes in dorsal and abdominal muscles of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) after freezing once and twice. Methods: Forty-five fresh rainbow trout specimens were distributed into three groups of 15 fish each. The first group was subjected to histological and microbiological analysis immediately after delivery at the laboratory. The second fish group was frozen at -18 °C for 15 days, while the third group of fish was frozen at -18 °C for 15 days, thawed and frozen again at -18 °C for 15 days. Data were analyzed using GraphPad InStat 3 software. Results: After freezing once, muscle fibers with intracellular void spaces were observed and retained stable peripheral boundary. In some muscle fibers, the endomysium boundaries were visible and with retained integrity. After freezing twice, damages and deformities were observed resulting in completely destructured muscle fibers. Large void spaces among the muscle fibers and bundles were greatly the result of shrinking and grouping of fibers and the laceration of endomysium and perimysium internum. Total microbial count and Enterobacteriaceae count had no significant differences (p>0.05) between fresh, frozen once, and frozen twice trout. Conclusion: Muscles of rainbow trout (O. mykiss) are histologically damaged to a greater extent after freezing twice and thawing. Abstract: FAU-type zeolite NaX was successfully prepared using hydrothermal synthesis at 90 °C for 6 h. The Mn- and Cu-ion-exchanged NaX zeolites were obtained. After the ion exchange, the zeolite powders were thermally treated at 300 °C. As well as Ag-ion-exchanged zeolite, NaX and zeolite were impregnated with two types of Ag nanoparticle dispersions: citrate surface-stabilized (Cit@Ag NPs) and polymer-stabilized (PVP@Ag) nanoparticles. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized using the electrochemical reduction method. The changes in the phase and chemical composition and structure of the obtained zeolite powders before and after ion exchange or impregnation were investigated by PXRD analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, and XRF analysis. The results show that Mn, Cu-exchanged NaX, and that impregnated with Ag demonstrated catalytic abilities towards ozone decomposition in comparison with pure zeolite (non-catalytic activity).

40. Fatty-acid composition of buffalo milk under intensive and pasture farming

Abstract: With the aim to assess the fatty-acid profile of buffalo milk from intensive and pasture farming system, the study included two farms. Farm 1 assigned 9 non-grazing buffaloes raised on green fodder or maize silage, and Farm 2 – 8 buffaloes on pasture until November and hay in winter. Individual samples of milk, taken in 7 monthly test days from August to February, were subjected to the Roese-Gottlieb lipid analysis. Analyses of variance were carried out per each fatty acid (FA), including the effects of farming, test day, milk yield and fat content. Farming system was established to be significant source of variation of all individual monounsaturated and polyunsaturated FAs (PUFA) and total PUFA. All PUFAs, except C20:3n3 and C20:2n6, showed better values in the milk from the buffaloes on pasture – more than 2-fold difference in total conjugated linoleic acids (0.913%) and rumenic acid (0.829%) in particular, in alpha-linolenic (0.145%) and gamma-linolenic (0.502%) acid, and in omega-3 FAs (n3), rendering n6/n3 ratio definitely lower (1.99). This applies also to greater extent to trans-C18:1 (4.027%) and vaccenic acid (2.323%) in particular, and to lesser to atherogenicity (2.44) and thrombogenicity (3.21) index. While C18:4n3 was found to increase, vaccenic and gamma-linolenic acid decline throughout grazing season, as well as conjugated linoleic acids with the exception of a peak in December. C20:5n3, C22:5n3 and C20:3n6 are characterized by such even more pronounced peak.

41. Crohn’s Disease Complicated by Ileosigmoid Fistula – Synchronous Resection or Primary Sigmoid Repair, One or Two-stage Procedure? A systematic review of the literature and prospective case series

Abstract: Introduction: Although ileosigmoid fistulas (ISFs) in Crohn’s disease (CD) are rare they can be quite challenging, especially for the inexperienced surgeons. Furthermore, current guidelines offer no clear recommendation regarding the surgical strategy in such cases. A systematic review of the literature to determine the best surgical strategy and a prospective case series are presented herein. Materials and methods: The systematic review was performed according to PRISMA guidelines. A single-center prospective data-base from January 1, 2014 to August 20, 2019 is presented. Age, duration of CD, and the rates of ISF, emergency, preoperative diagnosis, type of surgery, type of stoma, and complications were analyzed and a prospective case series.Results: Eleven of 69 papers with a total of 505 patients were included in the systematic analysis. The rate of ISF was 3–5% of all CD patients. The combined preoperative detection rate of all modalities was 71%. Primary repair was performed in 42% of the cases; the rate of stoma was 31.5% with a similar proportion in primary repair and sigmoid resection.In the presented series, 35 of 176 patients with CD were operated (51% in an emergency setting). There were 7 cases with ISFs (4% of all and 20% of the operated patients). Preoperative diagnosis was made at 57%. Primary repair was performed in 71%, and a two-stage intervention with a stoma – in 58% of patients.Conclusions: Primary repair should be attempted in all cases in which the sigmoid colon is disease-free or is not involved in the adja-cent abscess. The synchronous resections are not a mandatory indication for the stoma, but rather a tailored approach is recommended with an evaluation of the risk factors. Based on the available literature, no clear recommendation regarding the type of stoma can be made.

Abstract: Sleep and wakefulness are two main types of human and animal behavior. On the average human beings spend about one-third of their lives asleep. The sleep-wake cycle is the most important circadian rhythms which alternates in a periodic manner lasting for about 24 hours. Sleep is determined as the natural periodic suspension of consciousness characterized by relative immobility and reduced responsiveness to external stimuli. The researchers have found and identified many special brain structures and systems controlling waking, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and nonrapid eye (NREM) sleep and the transitions among these states. Currently, there is an enhanced interest of researchers toward sleep and its neurophysiological mechanisms of regulation because the number of people suffering from various sleep disturbance such as insomnia, delayed sleep onset, duration and propensity of sleep, worldwide dramatically increases. In addition to the next day drowsiness, nervousness, tiredness and decreased workability, it has been suggested that sleep is important also for the maintaining of mood, memory and cognitive function of the brain and is essential for the normal functioning of the endocrine and immune systems. More recently, new studies show a sustained link between sleep disorders and different serious health problems, including obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardio-vascular diseases and depression. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to summarize and analyze the available data about the neurological control of wakefulness, non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep and rapid- eyemovement (REM) sleep creating a substantial basis for better understanding different sleep disorders. Special attention is paid on the pharmacological aspects and use of some new classes of sleep promoting agents – melatonin, melatonin receptor agonists and orexin receptor antagonists.

Abstract: The aim of the study was an evaluation of the age related development of bronze turkey's bursa of Fabricius. The obtained data gave information about the standard actual values of the metric parameters in the investigated organ. The bursa of sixty healthy clinically bronze turkeys (30 males and 30 females) was studied metrically by ruler, graph paper and automatic balance. The birds were distributed in 10 age related groups at the 1, 7, 14, 28, 35, 49, 56, 90, 120 and 240 days. Each group consisted of 6 turkeys. The absolute and relative weight, length, perimeter and diameter of the organ were determined. During the period the absolute weight of the bronze turkeys' bursa increased by 76.5 times, the absolute length – 3.5 times. The relative weight of the organ was with the highest values at the 14 days of age. The relative length reached peak values at the 1 day. The relative perimeter was highest at 7 days. The obtained results gave a motivation to make the conclusion that the development of the bronze turkey bursa of Fabricius weight and length were highest from hatching to the sexual maturity.

Abstract: The aim of our investigation was to study the expression of the enzyme Alkaline phosphatase in the small intestines of the bronze turkey in the age aspect. Forty clinically healthy bronze turkeys (twenty males and twenty females) were studied. The groups of the birds were at age 1, 7, 14, 28, 35, 49, 56, 90, 120, and 240 days. Each group consisted of five males and five female birds. The enzyme’s expression was investigated by Gomori staining. The most significant expression of tissue alkaline phosphatase was observed in the epithelial cells of the duodenum. It was weaker in the jejunum and weakest in the ileum. In the three intestinal segments, high enzyme activity was observed during the first weeks of hatching (from the 1st to the 14th day in the duodenum and ileum, and from the 1st to the 28th day in the jejunum).

Abstract: The production and supply of fish as food is constantly growing worldwide. Various methods are applied to extend its shelf life, one of them being freezing. According to European Union legislation, the state of the food and its treatment must be indicated on the label. If the food had been frozen prior to marketing and then sold thawed, this information must be provided to the consumer by labelling it. Otherwise, this is considered a fraud to the consumer since freezing significantly degrades the quality of fish. Histological, physicochemical and microbiological changes in the muscle tissue of frozen fish occur. Different methods may be applied to distinguish between fresh and frozen and them thawed fish, of which histological examination is a reliable method.

Abstract: In times of population growth, climate change, and increasing water scarcity around the world, it is important to take an objective look at water, a fundamental resource for life. Hydrodynamic modeling makes possible the research of different aspects of the water cycle and the evaluation of different hydrological and hydrogeological forecasting scenarios in the short and medium terms. The present research offers a more detailed scope at the hydrodynamic processes and their space-time distributions on a UE pilot in the Júcar River Basin, providing a calibrated and validated hydrodynamic model of 121 km river reach for 45 years period (1974–2019) on a daily scale. The obtained information is about discharge and water depths along the Júcar River reach within the hydrogeological boundaries of the Mancha Oriental Aquifer (MOA). The river–aquifer interactions have been represented as dynamic boundary conditions expressed as a difference between observed discharges measured in 3 gauging stations. The obtained calibration error performance evaluations of observed and simulated values cover two periods, according to observed data availability from gauging station 08036 with resulting R2 for both discharges and water depths over 0.96. The model validation results were obtained for a different gauge 08132 and the determination coefficients R2 also perform very well with value of 0.90. The model developed might be useful for decision making in water resources management and can be used to generate simulated time series of water depths, levels, discharges, and velocities in reaches where gauging measurements are not available with a desired space-time resolution (from meter/second to kilometer/month). Estimation of critical discharge value (1.973 m3s−1) for system equilibrium, based on the balance between losing and gaining sub-reaches of the river, is also made with a statistical significance at 95% for hydrologic years 2007–2010, period influenced by restrictions in groundwater withdrawals. The results of the present research are important for the proper and objective management of the scarce water resources on a watershed scale in Júcar River Basin, a complex case study representing semiarid climate, growing anthropogenic pressures, and complex river–aquifer interactions. The used approach of dynamic representation of the river–aquifer interactions as distributed source boundary condition in the one-dimensional hydrodynamic model might be applied in another study case on similar scale.
