Abstract

Urbanization has reshaped the distribution of biodiversity on Earth, but we are only beginning to understand its effects on ecological communities. While urbanization may have homogenization effects strong enough to blur the large-scale patterns in interaction networks, urban community patterns may still be associated with climate gradients reflecting large-scale biogeographical processes. Using 103 hummingbird–plant mutualistic networks across continental Americas, including 176 hummingbird and 1,180 plant species, we asked how urbanization affects species interactions over large climate gradients. Urban networks were more generalized, exhibiting greater interaction overlap. Higher generalization was also associated with lower precipitation in both urban and natural areas, indicating that climate affects networks irrespective of habitat type. Urban habitats also showed lower hummingbird functional trait diversity and over/ underrepresentation of specific clades. From the plant side, urban communities had a higher prevalence of nonnative nectar plants, which were more frequently visited by the hummingbird species occurring in both urban and natural areas. Therefore, urbanization affected hummingbird–plant interactions through both the composition of species and traits, as well as floral resource availability. Taken together, we show that urbanization consistently modifies ecological communities and their interactions, but climate still plays a role in affecting the structure of these novel communities over the scale of continents. Abstract

Simple Summary: Wildlife has coexisted with human society for thousands of years. While there is a general consensus that nature in urban areas should be increased, the way people perceive the animals that live within cities varies greatly. Considering research on this issue, there are very few studies analyzing people's perception of urban wildlife, and the list of animals investigated is still very limited; the lowest frequency of these studies is in South America. In order to fill this gap, we aimed to identify how people perceive birds in two Brazilian cities. We observed that people can recognize the most frequent bird species and are aware of the ecological importance of birds. We also showed that most people associate most bird species with positive feelings such as beauty, joy, well-being, and peace. On the other hand, exotic species are considered pests and generate negative perceptions. Understanding how humans perceive animals plays a significant role in comprehending the contemporary human-nature relationship. Providing this knowledge is essential for planning environments where humans and animals interact and to garner broad support for biodiversity conservation in cities. Understanding how humans perceive animals is important for biodiversity conservation, however, only a few studies about this issue have been carried out in South America. We selected two Brazilian cities to assess people's perceptions of birds: Bauru (São Paulo, Brazil) and Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais, Brazil). From the available bird data for each city, we developed a questionnaire and applied it between September 2020 and June 2021. The data obtained were analyzed by simple counts, a Likert scale, and percentages. Also, human feelings related to birds were placed on the Free Word Cloud Generator website. Our study confirmed that most respondents were aware of the importance of birds to ecological balance and that respondents had a generally positive attitude towards most of the bird species. However, they disliked exotic species such as the Domestic Dove and the House Sparrow, which are associated with disease, dirt, and disgust. Respondents also underestimated the number of birds that can live in urban areas and the song of birds is still a sense less experienced and perceived by people. Abstract

Summary: The intrinsic complexity, variety of concepts and numerous ways to quantify landscape heterogeneity (LH) may hamper a better understanding of how its components relate to ecological phenomena. Our study is the first to synthesize understanding of this concept and to provide the state of the art on the subject based on a comprehensive systematic literature review of 661 articles published between 1982 and 2019. Definitions, terminologies and measurements of LH were diverse and conflicting. Most articles (534 out of 661) did not provide any definition for LH, and we found great variation among the studies that did. According to our review, only 10 studies measured the effects of different land-cover types on biotic or abiotic processes (functional LH). The remaining 651 studies measured physical attributes of the landscape without mentioning that different land-cover types may impact biotic and abiotic processes differently (structural LH). The metrics most frequently used to represent LH were the Shannon diversity index and proportion of land-cover type. Most metrics used as proxies of LH also coincided with those used to represent non-heterogeneity metrics, such as fragmentation and connectivity. We identify knowledge gaps, indicate future perspectives and propose guidelines that should be addressed when researching LH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Our goal in this study was to analyze the amount and distribution of tree cover and green spaces in relation to urban zoning and census data of Rio Claro, SP, based on the integration between academic knowledge and the public authorities as an auxiliary tool in the planning and management of the urban forest. We found 11.88 km2 of tree cover and 170 green areas within the urban perimeter. However, their spatial distribution is unbalanced once tree cover is concentrated in the city peripheries, while the green areas are concentrated in central areas. We propose alternatives to reduce the imbalance of tree cover and green areas between regions of the city. In the formulation of the current Master Plan, the active participation of undergraduate and graduate students in the creation and approval of amendments to the bill allowed the insertion of important elements for more sustainable management of the municipal landscape. A urbanização transforma os ecossistemas nativos e afeta negativamente a flora e a fauna. Apesar dos problemas, as aves podem fazer das cidades um refúgio e desempenhar funções ambientais no meio urbano. A arborização influencia positivamente a riqueza, diversidade e abundância de espécies de aves em áreas urbanas. Nesse cenário, Brasília é uma cidade parque, onde existem longos corredores formados por avenidas e ruas arborizadas. Um exemplo é o Eixo Rodoviário do Plano Piloto de Brasília (Eixão), via de 14 km de extensão, que conecta as porções norte e sul da cidade, compondo um grande corredor verde. Este trabalho teve como objetivo identificar e caracterizar a comunidade de aves presente no Eixão e avaliar a influência da arborização e dos níveis de ruído sobre a riqueza, abundância e diversidade da avifauna. As aves foram amostradas em 32 pontos fixos com ruído elevado e ruído reduzido. De posse dos dados obtidos em campo, calculou-se a riqueza, abundância e diversidade de aves, pousos no chão, pousos em árvores, forrageamento e nidificação. Utilizou-se teste de ANOVA de um fator para comparar os dados com os dias da semana. Em alguns locais onde foi realizado o levantamento das aves, foram descritas características da arborização viária: riqueza de espécies, abundância, diversidade, área basal e características funcionais (dispersão, deciduidade e origem). As informações florísticas foram pareadas com os dados da avifauna por meio de regressões simples. Os resultados mostraram que 86 espécies de aves pertencentes a 36 famílias habitam a área pesquisada. Houve um predomínio em abundância das espécies Furnarius rufus, Columba livea, Brotogeris chiriri, Pitangus sulphuratus. A maioria das espécies que frequenta o Eixão é generalista e oportunista, originária de áreas nativas campestres. A redução do ruído surtiu influenciou positivamente sobre as aves. Em contrapartida, o ruído influenciou negativamente a riqueza, abundância, diversidade de aves, forrageamento e pousos nas árvores. As abundâncias de pousos na árvore foram correlacionadas positivamente com a abundância de árvores. As aves do Eixão pousam preferencialmente em árvores decíduas e na estação seca. Esses resultados devem-se provavelmente à alta abundância de árvores com grande número de flores, como Tabebuia rósea, Handroanthus serratifolius e Tabebuia roseoalba. Os resultados mostram que uma via rodoviária arborizada cruzando um centro urbano é capaz de abrigar uma parcela importante da diversidade de aves nativas do bioma em que a cidade se encontra e atenuar os efeitos da urbanização. Urbanization transforms natural ecosystems and negatively affects flora and fauna. Despite the problems, birds can make cities a haven and perform environmental functions in the urban environment. The trees positively influences the richness, diversity and abundance of bird species in urban areas. In this scenario, Brasília is a park city, where there are long corridors formed by avenues and tree-lined streets. An example is the Highway Pilot Plan of Brasília (Eixão), 14 km long, which connects the northern and southern portions of the city, making up a large green corridor. This work aimed to identify and characterize the bird community present in Eixão and to evaluate the influence of trees and noise levels on the richness, abundance and diversity of the avifauna. The birds were sampled at 32 fixed points on high noise and low noise. With the data obtained in the field, it was calculated the richness, abundance and diversity of birds, landings on the ground, landings on trees, foraging and nesting. One-way ANOVA test was used to compare data with days of the week. In some places where the birds were surveyed, characteristics of road afforestation were described: species richness, abundance, diversity, basal area and functional characteristics (dispersion, deciduousness and origin). Floristic information was paired withavifauna data using simple regressions. The results showed that 86 species of birds belonging to 36 families inhabit the researched area. There was a predominance in abundance of the species Furnarius rufus, Columba livea, Brotogeris chiriri, Pitangus sulphuratus. Most of the species that frequent the Eixão are generalists and opportunists, originating in natural herbaceaus vegetation areas. The punctual closing on low noise had a positive influence on the birds. In contrast, the noise negatively influenced the wealth, abundance, diversity of birds, foraging and landings on the trees. The abundance of landings on the tree was positively correlated with the abundance of trees. The birds of Eixão land preferably in deciduous trees and in the dry season. These results are probably due to the abundance of trees with a large number of flowers, such as Tabebuia rosea, Handroanthus serratifolius and Tabebuia roseoalba.The results show that a road crossing an urban center is capable of tree harboring an important portion of the diversity of native birds in the biome in which the city is located and mitigating the effects of urbanization.
