Aquatic non-indigenous species (NIS) pose significant threats to biodiversity, disrupting ecosystems and inflicting substantial economic damages across agriculture, forestry, and fisheries. Due to the fast growth of global trade and transportation networks, NIS has been introduced and spread unintentionally in new environments. This study develops a new physics-informed model to forecast maritime shipping traffic between port regions worldwide. The predicted information provided by these models, in turn, is used as input for risk assessment of NIS spread through transportation networks to evaluate the capability of our solution. Inspired by the gravity model for international trades, our model considers various factors that influence the likelihood and impact of vessel activities, such as shipping flux density, distance between ports, trade flow, and centrality measures of transportation hubs. Accordingly, this paper introduces transformers to gravity models to rebuild the short- and long-term dependencies that make the risk analysis feasible. Thus, we introduce a physics-inspired framework that achieves an 89% binary accuracy for existing and non-existing trajectories and an 84.8% accuracy for the number of vessels flowing between key port areas, representing more than 10% improvement over the traditional deep-gravity model. Along these lines, this research contributes to a better understanding of NIS risk assessment. It allows policymakers, conservationists, and stakeholders to prioritize management actions by identifying high-risk invasion pathways. This article presents a database with geographical and demographic information characterizing the impacts to road and maritime networks, and coastal communities, of a plausible magnitude M9.0 megathrust Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake scenario near Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. The database consists of a medium and a high impact case associated with the earthquake scenario. The data include the geographical location of communities, ports, and airports/helipads/heliports, the structure of the roads network and their expected damage levels, the resilience level and population size of the communities on Vancouver Island, and the trajectories, expected delays and capacities of ferries and barges. The data originates from government and carriers' open available reports and external datasets, and several impact models. The primary purpose of this database is to support disaster management researchers working to develop and test network models that focus on road repair and restoration, and on the multi-modal distribution of relief supplies to victims. In the military population, there is high comorbidity between mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to the inherent risk of psychological trauma associated with combat. These disorders present with long-term neurological dysfunction and remain difficult to diagnose due to their comorbidity and overlapping clinical presentation. Therefore, we performed cross-sectional analysis of blood samples from demographically matched soldiers (total, n = 120) with mTBI, PTSD, and mTBI+PTSD and those who were considered cognitively and psychologically normal. Soldiers were genotyped for apolipoprotein E (APOE) ɛ4, and phospholipids (PL) were examined using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis. We observed significantly lower levels of several major PL classes in TBI, PTSD, and TBI+PTSD, compared with controls. PTSD severity analysis revealed that significant PL decreases were primarily restricted to the moderate-to-severe PTSD group. An examination of the degree of unsaturation showed that monounsaturated fatty acid-containing phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylinositol (PI) species were lower in the TBI and TBI+PTSD groups. However, these PLs were unaltered among PTSD subjects, compared with controls. Similarly, ether PC (ePC) levels were lower in PTSD and TBI+PTSD subjects, relative to controls. Ratios of arachidonic acid (AA) to docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-containing species were significantly decreased within PC and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) classes. APOE ɛ4 (+) subjects exhibited higher PL levels than their APOE ɛ4 (-) counterparts within the same diagnostic groups. These findings suggest that PL profiles, together with APOE genotyping, could potentially aid to differentiate diagnosis of mTBI and PTSD and warrant further validation. In conclusion, PL profiling may facilitate clinical diagnosis of mTBI and PTSD currently hindered by comorbid pathology and overlapping symptomology of these two conditions.

Phospholipid (PL) abnormalities are observed in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), suggesting their role in TBI pathology. Therefore, PL levels were examined in a TBI mouse model that received 1.8 mm deep controlled cortical impact injury or craniectomy only (control). The rotarod and Barnes maze acquisition and probe tests were performed within 2 wk after injury, with another probe test performed 3 mo postinjury. Liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry analyses were performed on lipid extracts from several brain regions and plasma from injured and control mice collected at 3 mo postinjury. Compared to controls, injured mice with sensorimotor and learning deficits had decreased levels of cortical and cerebellar phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) levels, while hippocampal PC, sphingomyelin and PE levels were elevated. Ether PE levels were lower in the cortices and plasma of injured animals. Polyunsaturated fatty acid-containing PC and PE species, particularly ratios of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to arachidonic acid, were lower in the hippocampi and cortices and plasma of injured mice. Given the importance of DHA in maintaining neuronal function and resolving inflammation and of peroxisomes in synthesis of ether PLs, normalizing these PLs may be a useful strategy for treating the chronic pathology of TBI., (© FASEB.)

Multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) has been applied to various energy problems to incorporate a variety of qualitative and quantitative criteria, usually spanning environmental, social, engineering, and economic fields. MCDA and associated methods such as life-cycle assessments and cost-benefit analysis can also include risk analysis to address uncertainties in criteria estimates. One technology now being assessed to help mitigate climate change is carbon capture and storage (CCS). CCS is a new process that captures CO2 emissions from fossil-fueled power plants and injects them into geological reservoirs for storage. It presents a unique challenge to decisionmakers (DMs) due to its technical complexity, range of environmental, social, and economic impacts, variety of stakeholders, and long time spans. The authors have developed a risk assessment model using a MCDA approach for CCS decisions such as selecting between CO2 storage locations and choosing among different mitigation actions for reducing risks. The model includes uncertainty measures for several factors, utility curve representations of all variables, Monte Carlo simulation, and sensitivity analysis. This article uses a CCS scenario example to demonstrate the development and application of the model based on data derived from published articles and publicly available sources. The BP MC252 well failure in the Gulf of Mexico, April 2010 caused concern for crude oil and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) exposure along the sandy beaches of the Florida Panhandle. We began collections of Coquina clams (Donax spp.) from the surf zone of Florida Panhandle beaches to monitor PAH contamination to compliment analysis of surf zone sand samples. These clams had higher levels of PAHs relative to ambient sand, and this allowed us to continue to monitor PAH levels after sand concentrations fell below limits of detection. PAH levels in the Coquina tissues were highly variable, perhaps indicative of the heterogeneous distribution of oil and tar on the beaches and exposure to tar particles. Overall, PAH levels decreased continuously in both sand and Coquina tissues, reaching limits of detection within one and two years respectively after oil landed on Florida Panhandle beaches. Illegal discharge of waste oil from ships is a major source of mortality for seabirds globally. Using linear and log-linear regression, we explored the relationship between detection rates of marine oily discharges and surveillance effort at different time scales, based on data collected in the Canadian Pacific Ocean by the National Aerial Surveillance Program (NASP) from 1997 to 2006. We introduce an approach for quantifying reductions in discharge rates with increased surveillance while controlling appropriately for surveillance effort, as standard linear correction for effort can introduce considerable bias. Despite low probabilities of detection (0.088-1.1%), we found evidence for reduced discharge rates with increasing surveillance effort for data summarized monthly and bimonthly in region A, which is closest to the NASP base airport. Using residuals derived from the best-fit log-linear models, we found detected discharge rates declined annually (-[0.070 spills/month]×year)., (Crown Copyright © 2013. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The central nervous system (CNS)-based symptoms of Gulf War Illness (GWI) include motor dysfunction, anxiety, and cognitive impairment. Gulf War (GW) agents, such as pyridostigmine bromide (PB), permethrin (PER), N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET), and stress, are among the contributory factors to the pathobiology of GWI. This study characterizes disturbances in phosphocholine-containing lipids that accompany neurobehavioral and neuropathological features associated with GW agent exposure. Exposed mice received PB orally, dermal application of PER and DEET and restraint stress daily for 28 days, while controls received vehicle during this period. Neurobehavioral studies included the rotarod, open field, and Morris water maze tests. Histopathological assessments included glial fibrillary acid protein, CD45, and Nissl staining. Liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry with source collision-induced dissociation in negative and positive ionization scanning modes was performed to characterize brain phosphatidylcholine (PC) and sphingomyelin (SM). A significant increase in ether containing PC (ePC34:0, ePC36:2, and ePC36:1) or long-chain fatty acid-containing PC (38:1, 40:4, 40:2) was observed in exposed mice compared with controls. Among differentially expressed PCs, levels of those with monounsaturated fatty acids were more affected than those with saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Sensorimotor deficits and anxiety, together with an increase in astrocytosis, were observed in exposed mice compared with controls. These lipid changes suggest that alterations in peroxisomal pathways and stearoyl-CoA desaturase activity accompany neurobehavioral and neuropathological changes after GW agent exposure and represent possible treatment targets for the CNS symptoms of GWI.

This paper examines the use of exploratory spatial analysis for identifying hotspots of shipping-based oil pollution in the Pacific Region of Canada's Exclusive Economic Zone. It makes use of data collected from fiscal years 1997/1998 to 2005/2006 by the National Aerial Surveillance Program, the primary tool for monitoring and enforcing the provisions imposed by MARPOL 73/78. First, we present oil spill data as points in a "dot map" relative to coastlines, harbors and the aerial surveillance distribution. Then, we explore the intensity of oil spill events using the Quadrat Count method, and the Kernel Density Estimation methods with both fixed and adaptive bandwidths. We found that oil spill hotspots where more clearly defined using Kernel Density Estimation with an adaptive bandwidth, probably because of the "clustered" distribution of oil spill occurrences. Finally, we discuss the importance of standardizing oil spill data by controlling for surveillance effort to provide a better understanding of the distribution of illegal oil spills, and how these results can ultimately benefit a monitoring program.

For application to military and civilian needs, Defence Research and Development Canada--Toronto contracted Queen's University, Kingston to develop a suite of biomechanical assessment and analytical tools to supplement human-based load carriage system assessment methods. This suite of tools permitted efficient objective evaluation of biomechanical aspects of load-bearing webbing, vests, packs and their components, and therefore contributed to early system assessment and a rapid iterative design process. This paper is a summary of five assessment and analytical tools. A dynamic load carriage simulator was developed to simulate cadence of walking, jogging and running. The simulator comprised a computer-controlled pneumatic platform that oscillated anthropometrically weighted mannequins of varying dimensions from which measures of skin contact pressure, hip reaction forces and moments and relative pack-person displacements were taken. A stiffness tester for range of motion provided force-displacement data on pack suspension systems. A biomechanical model was used to determine forces and moments on the shoulders and hips, and validated using a static load distribution mannequin. Subjective perceptual rating systems were used gather soldier feedback during a standardized mobility circuit. Objective outcome measures were validated by means of other objective measures (e.g., Optotrak, video, Instron, etc.) and then compared to subjective ratings. This approach led to development of objective performance criteria for load carriage systems and to improvements in load carriage designs that could be used both in the military and in general.

This study investigated the physiological responses and performances for 20 fire fighters when completing simulated forcible entry tests. The purpose was to establish the validity of using a tire striking test and to examine the effects of varying the test parameters. The tests consisted of striking a reinforced structure and a weighted truck tire on a plywood covered table with either a 4.54 or a 5.60 kg sledge hammer. The results indicate that the simulated forcible entry tests are short in duration (range = 8.0-17.6 s), but are also physically demanding in terms of cardiovascular response (range = 86.5-97.2 for a percentage of heart rate reserve). The differences in striking a reinforced structure versus hitting a tire were insignificant according to most of the measures taken. The parameters for the simulated forcible entry test that were determined to be most appropriate were to move the tire 30 cm and use the 4.54 kg sledge hammer.
