This study examines the lived experiences of seven internationally diverse scholars from Canada, the United States, New Zealand, and Australia to answer the question: how do we make meaning of our collective boundary crossing experiences across disciplines and positions within SoTL? Our positions range from graduate student, faculty, and academic developers, to department chair and centre director. We conducted a phenomenological study, based on narratives of experience, and drew on Wenger-Trayner and Wenger-Trayner's (2015) theoretical framework that explores the features of a landscape of practice. Guided by this framework, we analyze our boundary crossings and brokering across the "diverse, political and flat" features of the SoTL landscape. Our collective findings highlight the critical role brokers play in facilitating boundary crossings. Brokering is precarious, bringing people together, building trusting relationships, and developing legitimacy while negotiating deadlocks, bureaucracy, authorities, and a multitude of challenges. Brokers, we found, require strength and resilience to mobilise, influence, and drive change in the landscape to transform existing practices or create new ones. We suggest that our analytical process can be used as a tool of analysis for future research about how brokers influence the SoTL landscape of practice and how brokering enhances SoTL development, support, and leadership.

The definition of experiential education (EE) has both pedagogical and practical implications for higher education institutions. While there is increasing pressure to justify and quantify these experiences, we remain faced with the challenge of ensuring that a demonstration of breadth does not distract from the importance of meaningful depth both in and for student learning. This paper presents a potential reframing of conversations about experiential education and emphasizes the role of high impact practices (HIPs) in defining EE as more than an experience. The value, purpose, and challenges of integrating reflection into these experiences is highlighted through the lens of the defining characteristics of HIPs, supporting the development of meaningful, engaging opportunities for deeper learning.

This study reports on an investigation into the experiences of faculty engaged in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). Common challenges that emerged across the interviews included competing priorities, and a lack of background knowledge and research skills relevant to their SoTL work. These challenges were often overcome by working alongside colleagues, as well as receiving support provided by the institutional teaching and learning centre. The findings of this study offer insights into how institutions can best support and encourage SoTL research among faculty, and thereby enhance the quality of teaching.

Combined sewer overflow (CSO) control strategies are commonly selected relying on optimization or multicriteria analysis. A methodology is proposed in this paper for selecting and evaluating the solutions to mitigate stormwater problems in combined sewer systems (CSSs) based on the understanding and rigorous diagnosis of the causes of the observed problems using hydrological/hydraulic simulations. The methodology was applied to a sewer catchment near Montreal (Canada) in order to reduce the magnitude and recurrence of sewer surcharge and local flooding without increasing the recurrence of CSOs. Two types of control strategies were considered: (1) large-scale solutions, i.e., redirection of stormwater inflows and separation of the CSS; and (2) source control solutions including both green and gray infrastructure. These solutions were evaluated through a comparative analysis of nine scenarios. Based on the results, source control solutions could be considered as the most effective interventions on the studied catchment for eliminating or significantly reducing the occurrence of sewer surcharge (from an average of 6.7 to 2.6) and surface flooding on local streets (from an average of 3.5 to 0.4 per year). Optimization of the spatial distribution of green infrastructures (GIs) was performed for a combined sewer system located in the Province of Quebec, Canada, using a simulation-optimization tool with the aim of reducing seasonal combined sewer overflows (CSOs). The performance of four CSOs control alternatives involving the individual and integrated implementation of GIs with storage tanks and real time control (RTC) of the sewer was evaluated for a nine-year simulation period of historical rainfall data and for 20%-increased rainfall data (representative of potential climate change impact). The integration of GIs with RTC of the sewer (with or without storage tanks) lowered the total CSO volume by 95% to 99% under historical rainfall data and by 93% to 96% under increased rainfall intensities when compared to the reference scenario. Adapting GI's number and location for optimal CSO control rather than according to space availability criteria reduced CSO frequency but had only a slight impact on CSO volume reduction. Protection areas are commonly delineated in water supply watersheds to manage anthropogenic activities that pose pollution risks. These areas are frequently determined based on geographical distances that are not representative of the travel time of water. For surface waters, the total travel time for water between an anthropogenic activity and the drinking water intake is the sum of the overland travel time and the travel time in a river. In previous research, we reported methods for evaluating travel time in a river. The present paper focuses on the estimation of overland travel times. Four methods were applied, evaluated and compared based on a land use database representing anthropogenic activities that potentially release contaminants. Methods for overland travel times that provided more precise results required abundant data and expertise to be implemented, but can contribute to improved decision-making for land use planning in the context of source water protection. The value of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) frequently is overlooked or misunderstood within higher education institutions. COVID-19's disruption of higher education has highlighted the importance of embracing roles of teacher and learner, flexibility, and a focus on systematically studying teaching and learning embrace as strategies to navigate this chaos. Based on our multidisciplinary, multi-positional, and multi-national perspectives, we make connections between the skills learned through SoTL scholarship and their applicability in times of chaos. Our intent is to highlight the skills and approaches acquired through SoTL engagement and by doing so, emphasize the valuable contributions of SoTL scholars within higher education.
