Abstract

PurposeThe aim of this study was to elicit utilities for radioactive iodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer (RR-DTC) and evaluate the impact of treatment response and toxicities on quality of life.Patients and methodsRR-DTC health states were developed based on data from a previous qualitative study and iterative review by clinical experts. Following piloting, health states underwent valuation by 100 members of the UK public during time trade-off interviews. Mean utilities and descriptive distribution statistics were calculated, and a logistic regression analysis was conducted.ResultsThe demographic characteristics of the study sample were generally reflective of the UK population. Clear differentiation in valuation between health states was observed. No response/stable disease had an adjusted utility value of 0.87, with a corresponding gain of +0.04 following a treatment response and a decline of -0.35 for disease progression. Adverse events were associated with utility decrements between -0.47 (grade III diarrhea) and -0.05 (grade I/II alopecia).ConclusionThe trade-off interviews derived utility weights show clear differentiation between RR-DTC health states in response to treatment. The values reported in this study are suitable for cost-effectiveness evaluations for new treatments in RR-DTC.

7. Keeping Students 'on Their Toes and on Their Game': Serendipitous Findings in Students' Assessments and Reactions

Abstract

This study extends the empirical findings of the use of continuous, lecture-embedded assessments to increase engagement and enhance learning. Outcome data (exam performance and attendance rates) from college students in three upper-division business course sections who took quizzes and wrote two-minute papers (test group) were compared to outcome data in the same course in which the assignments were not given (control group). Students in the test group reported increased engagement, motivation to study, self-efficacy, and more thorough note taking, and they attributed these improvements to the assessments. Serendipitous findings were positive group dynamics, development of comprehensive study plans, and a greater appreciation of how theory informs practice. Implications are discussed.

22. Literacy Block: Meeting the Needs of All Learners; A Summative Program Evaluation

Abstract

This summative program evaluation study investigated the Response to Intervention (RTI) pilot literacy block program that was implemented in first and second grade classrooms in a small southeastern suburban school. All 111 students in the first and second grade were involved in this RTI model during the 2010-2011 school year including special education students, English Language Learners (ELLs), advanced learners, and students in regular education. Eight educators were purposefully selected and volunteered to be participants in the study which included three grade one teachers, three grade two teachers, a building substitute and a moderate special needs educator. The following two research questions were investigated in this study: 1. How do teachers perceive that the reorganization of literacy instruction has impacted teaching and student learning? 2. How are teachers impacted by the implementation of a Professional Learning Community (PLC) guided by distributive leadership with a focus on literacy differentiation? The program evaluation followed a qualitative methodology (Patton, 2002) as this study tells a story which focused on teachers' perceptions related to implementation of the RTI literacy block pilot as well as their views as to how it impacted student achievement. The study also explored teacher collaboration including teachers' perceptions about the collaborative structures put in place as well as ones that took place independent of the ones set aside by the building principal. In addition, this researcher addressed the following: PLC development, the role of the principal within the PLC, teachers' perceptions of the principal's involvement, and distributive leadership practices within the school. Abstract

Investigated ethnic and gender differences in frequency of use and healthfulness of bag lunches at school. Surveys of middle school students and their parents indicated that one-half of students brought bag lunches, with boys doing so more often than girls. There were ethnic differences in the use of seven foods and whether foods were regular or low fat. (SM)

Abstract

Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) have been associated with increased risk of pneumonia. Their impact on respiratory virus infections is unclear. We performed a post-hoc analysis of the FLUVAC cohort, a multicenter prospective cohort study of adults hospitalized with influenza-like illness (ILI) during six consecutive influenza seasons (2012–2018). All patients were tested for respiratory virus infection by multiplex PCR on nasopharyngeal swabs and/or bronchoalveolar lavage. Risk factors were identified by logistic regression analysis. Among the 2658 patients included, 537 (20.2%) were treated with ICS before admission, of whom 282 (52.5%, 282/537) tested positive for at least one respiratory virus. Patients on ICS were more likely to test positive for non-influenza respiratory viruses (25.1% vs. 19.5%, P = 0.004), especially for adenovirus (aOR 2.36, 95% CI 1.18–4.58), and respiratory syncytial virus (aOR 2.08, 95% CI 1.39–3.09). Complications were reported in 55.9% of patients on ICS (300/537), primarily pneumonia (171/535, 32%). Among patients on chronic ICS who tested positive for respiratory virus, 14.2% (40/282) were admitted to intensive care unit, and in-hospital mortality rate was 2.8% (8/282). Chronic use of ICS is associated with an increased risk of adenovirus or RSV infections in patients admitted for ILI.

Abstract

Perceived organizational membership (POM) is a relatively new framework to analyze the attachment of employees to their organizations. To date, there are no studies that have examined POM in public higher education. Furthermore, there are relatively few studies that have explored attitudes of public personnel in the context of pay cuts in the form of furloughs. In this article, we present the findings of a survey of more than 5,000 public university faculty, administrative support staff, and managerial personnel. On most POM facets, managerial personnel perceived greater organizational need fulfillment, mattering, and belonging than either faculty or support staff. Implications for university administrators and faculty are discussed, with recommendations to increase POM for all employees.
