Abstract

Faced with dramatic pressures connected with COVID-19, the health systems were challenged by the need of providing care to COVID-19 patients, without jeopardising the lives of physicians. Telemedicine was a candidate solution, but just having a well-performing technology is not enough. Theoretical models on technology adoption alert that to be effectively and timely adopted, technology – e.g. telemedicine – has to be accepted. In this article, we investigate the innovation journey of a firm (Firm A) that designed and developed a telemedicine platform, collaborating with different actors – adopters (physicians, nurses and patients) and health decision-makers – according to an open innovation (OI) approach. During the COVID-19 emergency, Firm A has rapidly and successfully modified its product to provide a Local Health District with an effective solution for patients monitoring. The case study shows an interwoven relationship between the OI approach adopted in the development of the telemedicine platform and the acceptance of the technology itself, paving the way to a new role for OI: not only an enabler supporting knowledge exchanges, but also an enabler of Technology Acceptance. Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the implications of knowledge collaboration in open innovation and the role of digital technology therein. The paper draws on a survey of manufacturing firms from Italy, Sweden, France and Spain. The results show that knowledge collaboration with external partners has a significant effect on innovation novelty but not on innovation efficiency. In addition, the results show that digital technology moderates the relationship between knowledge collaboration and innovation efficiency but not the relationship between knowledge collaboration and innovation novelty. Overall, this study contributes to the growing discussion about the benefits of adopting digital technologies in open innovation processes by investigating whether and under which conditions knowledge collaboration is beneficial.

24. Open innovation and intellectual capital during emergency: evidence from a case study in telemedicine.

Abstract

The achievement of innovation performance by means of open innovation (OI) is not automatic and intellectual capital (IC) can play a pivotal role. In 2020, COVID-19 challenged the sanitary systems and required to rapidly introduce innovative health technologies. By unleashing multitudes of brains, OI may help. However, the pandemic introduced social distancing that acted to the detriment of firms' IC, which should guarantee OI successfulness. This tension pushed us to investigate how OI affects IC to provide effective and timely innovative solutions during crises. We studied a company that rapidly modified its telemedicine product to provide a Local Health District (LHD) with an effective solution for monitoring COVID-19 patients. By distinguishing between OI developed prior to (ex-ante) and post (ex-post) the COVID-19 outbreak, we show that ex-post OI can build on IC strengthened by ex-ante OI and hence allow higher performance needed to combat the pandemic. 41. Papia civitas gloriosa: urban geomorphology for a thematic itinerary on geocultural heritage in Pavia (Central Po Plain, N Italy)

Abstract

The interaction between geomorphological processes and anthropogenic activities produces an impressive association of geomorphological and archaeological heritage in urban contexts. We analyzed the urban geomorphology and the geo- and cultural heritage in the town of Pavia (N Italy). The city is located in a strategic position, on a series of fluvial terraces where the Romans founded a colony, probably in the place of an Iron Age Gaul settlement. In Medieval Times and the Modern Era, Pavia sprawled outside the Roman walls, creating new urban areas and modifying the landscape. Geomorphological and GIS-spatial analyses integrated with anthropic landform surveying, archaeological data and historical cartography were performed. This multi-disciplinary approach allowed an investigation into how urban development was firstly adapted and then superimposed onto fluvial landforms. As a result, a flexible geocultural itinerary is proposed for linking geoheritage with cultural heritage, and for disseminating urban geomorphology key-concepts.
