Abstract

OBJECTIVES: Research on links between social, geographic, and cultural determinants of health has been thwarted by inadequate measures of culture. The purpose of this study was to improve the measurement of community culture, defined as shared patterns of attitudes and behaviors among people within a neighborhood that distinguish it from others, and to examine dimensions of culture, independent of socioeconomic and demographic factors, and their relationships with health. STUDY DESIGN: A survey research design with correlational analyses was used. METHODS: A survey packet including the Community Culture Survey - Revised (CCS-R), demographic, health, and other individual-level measures was administered through convenience sampling across the United States (US) and to a sample in Thailand from 2016 to 2018. US county-level variables were obtained from zip codes. RESULTS: 1930 participants from 49 US states (n = 1592) and Thailand (n = 338) completed all CCS-R items, from which 12 subscales were derived: Social Support & Connectedness, Responsibility for Self & Others, Family Ties & Duties, Social Distress, Urban Diversity, Discontinuity, Church-Engaged, External Resource-Seeking, Locally Owned Business-Active, Power Deference, Next Generation Focus, and Self-Reliance. Neighborhood culture subscale scores varied more by geography than by participants demographics. All subscales predicted one or more health indicator, and some of these relationships were significant after adjusting for participant age and county-level socioeconomic variables. Most of the significant differences on subscales by race/ethnicity were no longer significant after adjusting for participants age and county-level socioeconomic variables. Most rural/urban and regional differences in culture within the US persisted after these adjustments. Based on correlational analyses, Social Support & Connectedness and Responsibility for Self & Others were the best predictors of participants overall health and quality of life, and Responsibility for Self & Others was the best predictor (inversely) of the CDCs measures of social vulnerability. CONCLUSIONS: Neighborhood culture is measurable, multi-dimensional, distinct from race/ethnicity, and related to health even after controlling for age and socioeconomic factors. The CCS-R is useful for advancing research and practice addressing the complex interactions between individuals, their neighborhood communities, and health outcomes.

Abstract

Abstract Background Cardiogenic shock (CS) is associated with high in‐hospital mortality. Objective assessment of its severity and prognosis is paramount for timely therapeutic interventions. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the shock index (SI) and its variants as prognostic indicators for in‐hospital mortality. Methods A retrospective study involving 1282 CS patients were evaluated. Baseline patient characteristics, clinical trajectory, hospital outcomes, and shock indices were collected and analysed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were employed to determine the predictive accuracy of shock indices in predicting in‐hospital mortality. Abstract

Multicellular cable bacteria display an exceptional form of biological conduction, channeling electrical currents across centimeter distances through a regular network of protein fibers embedded in the cell envelope. The fiber conductivity is among the highest recorded for biomaterials, providing a promising outlook for new bio-electronic technologies, but the underlying mechanism of electron transport remains elusive. Here, we use detailed electrical characterization down to cryogenic temperatures, which reveals that long-range conduction in these bacterial protein wires is based on a unique type of quantum-assisted multistep hopping. The conductance near room temperature reveals thermally activated behavior, yet with a low activation energy, suggesting that substantial delocalization across charge carrier sites contributes to high conductivity. At cryogenic temperatures, the conductance becomes virtually independent of temperature, thus indicating that quantum vibrations couple to the charge transport. Abstract

As robots take on roles in our society, it is important that their appearance, behaviour and personality are appropriate for the job they are given and are perceived favourably by the people with whom they interact. Here, we provide an extensive quantitative and qualitative study exploring robot personality but, importantly, with respect to individual human traits. Firstly, we show that we can accurately portray personality in a social robot, in terms of extroversion-introversion using vocal cues and linguistic features. Secondly, through garnering preferences and trust ratings for these different robot personalities, we establish that, for a Robo-Barista, an extrovert robot is preferred and trusted more than an introvert robot, regardless of the subject's own personality. Abstract

Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) offer a promising approach to solving differential equations and, more generally, to applying deep learning to problems in the physical sciences. We adopt a recently developed transfer learning approach for PINNs and introduce a multi-head model to efficiently obtain accurate solutions to nonlinear systems of ordinary differential equations with random potentials. In particular, we apply the method to simulate stochastic branched flows, a universal phenomenon in random wave dynamics. Finally, we compare the results achieved by feed forward and GAN-based PINNs on two physically relevant transfer learning tasks and show that our methods provide significant computational speedups in comparison to standard PINNs trained from scratch., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Fungal pathogens deploy a set of molecules (proteins, specialized metabolites, and sRNAs), so-called effectors, to aid the infection process. In comparison to other plant pathogens, smut fungi have small genomes and secretomes of 20 Mb and around 500 proteins, respectively. Previous comparative genomic studies have shown that many secreted effector proteins without known domains, i.e., novel, are conserved only in the Ustilaginaceae family. By analyzing the secretomes of 11 species within Ustilaginaceae, we identified 53 core homologous groups commonly present in this lineage. By collecting existing mutants and generating additional ones, we gathered 44 Ustilago maydis strains lacking single core effectors as well as 9 strains containing multiple deletions of core effector gene families. Pathogenicity assays revealed that 20 of these 53 mutant strains were affected in virulence. Among the 33 mutants that had no obvious phenotypic changes, 13 carried additional, sequence-divergent, structurally similar paralogs. We report a virulence contribution of seven previously uncharacterized single core effectors and of one effector family. 21. Impaired balance between neutrophil extracellular trap formation and degradation by DNases in COVID-19 disease

Abstract

Abstract Background Thrombo-inflammation and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are exacerbated in severe cases of COVID-19, potentially contributing to disease exacerbation. However, the mechanisms underpinning this dysregulation remain elusive. We hypothesised that lower DNase activity may be associated with higher NETosis and clinical worsening in patients with COVID-19. Methods Biological samples were obtained from hospitalized patients (15 severe, 37 critical at sampling) and 93 non-severe ambulatory cases. Our aims were to compare NET biomarkers, functional DNase levels, and explore mechanisms driving any imbalance concerning disease severity. Results Functional DNase levels were diminished in the most severe patients, paralleling an imbalance between NET markers and DNase activity. DNase1 antigen levels were higher in ambulatory cases but lower in severe patients. DNase1L3 antigen levels remained consistent across subgroups, not rising alongside NET markers. DNASE1 polymorphisms correlated with reduced DNase1 antigen levels. Moreover, a quantitative deficiency in plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs), which primarily express DNase1L3, was observed in critical patients. Analysis of public single-cell RNAseq data revealed reduced DNase1L3 expression in pDCs from severe COVID-19 patient. Conclusion Severe and critical COVID-19 cases exhibited an imbalance between NET and DNase functional activity and quantity. Early identification of NETosis imbalance could guide targeted therapies against thrombo-inflammation in COVID-19-related sepsis, such as DNase administration, to avert clinical deterioration. Abstract

The frequency of bovine genital campylobacteriosis (BGC) in 157 cows from nine herds from the microregion of Varginha - Minas Gerais - Brazil was evaluated. Farmers use either artificial insemination and natural breeding after two insemination procedures or natural breeding. The diagnosis of BGC was performed by the direct fluorescent antibody test (DFAT) using vaginal mucus. All studied herds showed C. fetus infected animals and, of 157 animals, 40 (25.5%) were positive in DFAT: 7 (26.9%) from herds with natural breeding and 33 (25.1%) from herds with both artificial insemination and natural breeding after the second-to-third insemination. The high frequency of BGC found in this study shows that this disease is present among herds which have reproductive problems and the use of natural breeding after the second-to-third unsuccessful insemination could be a risk factor for the disease.

Abstract

A esporotricose humana e animal têm sido observadas em Corumbá e Ladário, Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), desde 2011. Em razão das especificidades das áreas fronteiriças e da interface humano-ambiente-animais o desenvolvimento de políticas e programas de saúde, considerando conceitos de “uma só saúde”, é um caminho para a pesquisa e a gestão da saúde. O artigo discute sobre aspectos epidemiológicos da esporotricose felina com o objetivo de dar suporte às decisões pertinentes a sua prevenção, controle e gestão da saúde pública. Coletou-se informações em prontuários veterinários, entre 2011 e 2018, totalizando 315 casos (5 cães e 310 gatos). Realizou-se o mapeamento dos casos compatíveis ou confirmados de esporotricose animal, utilizando o QGis, entretanto a perda de dados foi um aspecto limitante. Foram realizadas estatística descritiva para frequência das variáveis, métodos de análise geo- estatística e taxas de ocorrência da doença. Este é o primeiro estudo sobre esporotricose no estado, a taxa de ocorrência, em felinos, variou de 0,04% a 3,50% entre os anos de 2015 e 2018. O perfil dos gatos infectados foi: adultos jovens, machos não-castrados. Taxa de eutanásia foi 76,50%, a taxa de cura em animais tratados foi 64,90%. O maior número de casos relacionou-se a bairros mais populosos, indicando que essas seriam áreas sob maior risco. Os resultados foram fundamentais para mobilizar o poder público e a sociedade em atenção à esporotricose, mas é preciso melhorar aspectos relacionados a notificação de casos, diagnóstico laboratorial, a acompanhamento do tratamento, educação sanitária, guarda responsável e controle populacional de felinos.

Abstract

Plant-parasitic nematodes constrain global food security. During parasitism, they secrete effectors into the host plant from two types of pharyngeal gland cells. These effectors elicit profound changes in host biology to suppress immunity and establish a unique feeding organ from which the nematode draws nutrition. Despite the importance of effectors in nematode parasitism, there has been no comprehensive identification and characterisation of the effector repertoire of any plant-parasitic nematode. To address this, we advance techniques for gland cell isolation and transcriptional analysis to define a stringent annotation of putative effectors for the cyst nematode Heterodera schachtii at three key life-stages. We define 717 effector gene loci: 269 "known" high-confidence homologs of plant-parasitic nematode effectors, and 448 "novel" effectors with high gland cell expression. In doing so we define the most comprehensive "effectorome" of a plant-parasitic nematode to date. Using this effector definition, we provide the first systems-level understanding of the origin, deployment and evolution of a plant-parasitic nematode effectorome. The robust identification of the effector repertoire of a plant-parasitic nematode will underpin our understanding of nematode pathology, and hence, inform strategies for crop protection.

Abstract

Objectives: Research on links between social, geographic, and cultural determinants of health has been thwarted by inadequate measures of culture. The purpose of this study was to improve the measurement of community culture, defined as shared patterns of attitudes and behaviors among people within a neighborhood that distinguish it from others, and to examine dimensions of culture, independent of socioeconomic and demographic factors, and their relationships with health. Study design: A survey research design with correlational analyses was used. Methods: A survey packet including the Community Culture Survey – Revised (CCS-R), demographic, health, and other individual-level measures was administered through convenience sampling across the United States (US) and to a sample in Thailand from 2016 to 2018. US county-level variables were obtained from zip codes. Results: 1930 participants from 49 US states (n = 1592) and Thailand (n = 338) completed all CCS-R items, from which 12 subscales were derived: Social Support & Connectedness, Responsibility for Self & Others, Family Ties & Duties, Social Distress, Urban Diversity, Discontinuity, Church-Engaged, External Resource-Seeking, Locally Owned Business-Active, Power Deference, Next Generation Focus, and Self-Reliance. Neighborhood culture subscale scores varied more by geography than by participant's demographics. All subscales predicted one or more health indicator, and some of these relationships were significant after adjusting for participant age and county-level socioeconomic variables. Most of the significant differences on subscales by race/ethnicity were no longer significant after adjusting for participant's age and county-level socioeconomic variables. Most rural/urban and regional differences in culture within the US persisted after these adjustments. Based on correlational analyses, Social Support & Connectedness and Responsibility for Self & Others were the best predictors of participants' overall health and quality of life, and Responsibility for Self & Others was the best predictor (inversely) of the CDC's measures of social vulnerability. Conclusions: Neighborhood culture is measurable, multi-dimensional, distinct from race/ethnicity, and related to health even after controlling for age and socioeconomic factors. The CCS-R is useful for advancing research and practice addressing the complex interactions between individuals, their neighborhood communities, and health outcomes.

Abstract

Summary: Background: No study has compared the virological and immunological status of young people with perinatally-acquired HIV infection (P-HIV) with that of people with HIV adulthood (A-HIV) having a similar duration of infection. Methods: 5 French cohorts of P-HIV and A-HIV patients with a known date of HIV-infection and receiving antiretroviral treatment (ART), were used to compare the following proportions of: virological failure (VF) defined as plasma HIV RNA ≥ 50 copies/mL, CD4 cell percentages and CD4:CD8 ratios, at the time of the most recent visit since 2012. The analysis was stratified on time since infection, and multivariate models were adjusted for demographics and treatment history. Findings: 310 P-HIV were compared to 1515 A-HIV (median current ages 20.9 [IQR:14.4–25.5] and 45.9 [IQR:37.9–53.5] respectively). VF at the time of the most recent evaluation was significantly higher among P-HIV (22.6%, 69/306) than A-HIV (3.3%, 50/1514); p ≤ 0.0001. The risk of VF was particularly high among the youngest children (2–5 years), adolescents (13–17 years) and young adults (18–24 years), compared to A-HIV with a similar duration of infection: adjusted Odds-Ratio (aOR) 7.0 [95% CI: 1.7; 30.0], 11.4 [4.2; 31.2] and 3.3 [1.0; 10.8] respectively. The level of CD4 cell percentages did not differ between P-HIV and A-HIV. P-HIV aged 6–12 and 13–17 were more likely than A-HIV to have a CD4:CD8 ratio ≥ 1: 84.1% vs. 58.8% (aOR = 3.5 [1.5; 8.3]), and 60.9% vs. 54.7% (aOR = 1.9 [0.9; 4.2]) respectively. Interpretation: P-HIV were at a higher risk of VF than A-HIV with a similar duration of infection, even after adjusting for treatment history, whereas they were not at a higher risk of immunological impairment. Exposure to viral replication among young patients living with HIV since birth or a very early age, probably because of lower adherence, could have an impact on health, raising major concerns about the selection of resistance mutations and the risk of HIV transmission. Abstract

Background: Fractures of the clavicle are the most common birth injury among newborns. Aim of this systematic review was to provide a comprehensive analysis of the role of ultrasound (US) in diagnosing clavicular fractures in neonates. Methods: A systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) using PubMed and Embase, including studies focusing on US in neonatal clavicle fracture. Age at US, number of cases examined by US and X-ray, US and X-ray diagnoses, US probe used, fracture site were systematically extracted. Results: A total of 231 articles were found. We ultimately selected 7 publications that satisfied the inclusion criteria, involving 136 patients examined between 3 days and 3 weeks of age, with 135 confirmed fractures. US was performed on all patients and correctly diagnosed all fractures (135/135, 100%). X-ray was performed on 94/136 patients (69.1%) and correctly diagnosed 89/93 fractures (95.7%). Fracture site was: medial in 2/79, middle in 37/79, and lateral in 40/79. In the remaining 57 cases, site was not reported. Conclusions: This review indicates that ultrasound is extremely reliable in diagnosing clavicle fractures in newborns and should be considered as the gold standard in this context.

Abstract

General Relativistic effects on the clustering of matter in the universe provide a sensitive probe of cosmology and gravity theories that can be tested with the upcoming generation of galaxy surveys. Here, we present a suite of large volume high-resolution N-body simulations specifically designed to generate light-cone data for the study of relativistic effects on lensing-matter observables. RayGalGroupSims (or in short RayGal) consists of two N-body simulations of $(2625\,h^{-1}\,{\rm Mpc})^3$ volume with $4096^3$ particles of a standard flat $\Lambda$CDM model and a non-standard $w$CDM phantom dark energy model. Light-cone data from the simulations have been generated using a parallel ray-tracing algorithm that has accurately solved billion geodesic equations. Catalogues and maps with relativistic weak-lensing which include post-Born effects, magnification bias (MB) and redshift space distortions (RSD) due to gravitational redshift, Doppler, transverse Doppler, Integrated Sachs-Wolfe/Rees-Sciama effects, are publicly released. Using this dataset, we are able to reproduce the linear and quasi-linear predictions from the Class relativistic code for the 10 (cross-)power spectra (3$\times$2 points) of the matter density fluctuation field and the gravitational convergence at $z=0.7$ and $z=1.8$. We find $1-30\%$ level contribution from both MB and RSD to the matter power spectrum, while the Fingers-of-God effect is visible at lower redshift in the non-linear regime. MB contributes at the $10-30\%$ level to the convergence power spectrum leading to a deviation between the shear power-spectrum and the convergence power-spectrum. MB also plays a significant role in the galaxy-galaxy lensing by decreasing the density-convergence spectra by $20\%$, while coupling non-trivial configurations (such as the one with the convergence at the same or even lower redshift than the density field)., Comment: 25 pages, 19 figures, minor modifications to match A&A version, RayGal data available at https://cosmo.obspm.fr/public-datasets

Abstract

Many of the intrinsic facets of forest planning are surrounded by uncertainty. Decision-makers strive to improve their understanding of the sources of uncertainty and their impact on the decision-making process. However, uncertainty is rarely integrated into real-world forestry applications or into decision support tools used in forest planning problems. To identify the needs, interests, and challenges of managing uncertainty in forest planning, we interviewed forestry professionals. All the interviewees indicated the positive potential of a tool that could address some facets of uncertainty. Additionally, we conducted a review of the most recent literature on this topic to understand current hot topics and future trends that could help address real-world challenges. This study highlights the next steps to incorporate uncertainty into the decision support systems for forest planning. However, to strengthen the bond between the practical needs of forestry professionals and the theoretical approaches proposed by recent literature, more effort should be placed on defining terminology and formulating a theoretical framework for uncertainty analysis. This will provide the forestry community with a common language and typology, help increase its general understanding, and improve communication between forestry researchers, forestry professionals, and other stakeholders.
