Abstract

Low-frequency Raman scattering experiments have been performed on thin films consisting of nickel-silver composite nanoparticles embedded in alumina matrix. It is observed that the Raman scattering by the quadrupolar modes, strongly enhanced when the light excitation is resonant with the surface dipolar excitation, is mainly governed by the silver electron contribution to the plasmon excitation. The Raman results are in agreement with a core-shell structure of the nanoparticles, the silver shell being loosely bonded to the nickel core., Comment: 3 figures. To be published in Phys. Rev. B

Abstract

The Localized Surface Plasmon resonance (LSPR) of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) is strongly dependent on their local environment and on their constituent-material dielectric functions. Thus, chemical modifications occurring at their vicinity, or directly within the NPs may be optically monitored. Moreover, Ag-based NPs may display a well-defined LSPR strongly sensitive to small variations of the surrounding. In this respect, Ag-based NPs (produced by laser vaporization) containing another reactive metal have been investigated. The first illustration deals with iron-silver NPs investigated through TEM observations, in situ optical spectroscopy and Monte Carlo simulations, leading us to conclude that iron and silver initially adopt a segregated configuration with a silver-enriched surface. During oxidation, iron likely diffuses throughout the silver shell, leading to an Ag@Fe3O4 configuration, while an inverse process may occur during annealing under a reducing atmosphere [1].We also performed optical and environmental TEM characterizations on In-Ag NPs. Abstract

A study is carried out on the electronic structure of gold nanoparticles embedded in a silica film, both before and after irradiation at 355 nm by a laser. The results show that before irradiation the gold atoms are in metallic states within the nanoparticles.

Abstract

The shifts in binding energy of the Ni 2p3/2 and Au 4f7/2 levels in Au, Ni and AuNi clusters deposited on HOPG are reported. It is concluded that the shift of the bimetallic system is controlled by alloying effects and local order at the atomic scale.

Abstract

(C[sub 60]) [sub n] C[sup +][sub q] cationic clusters are produced in a laser vaporization source by quenching the vapors from C[sub 60] and graphite targets. They are analyzed in the gas phase by abundance and photofragmentation time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. Among the large number of expected isomers, the present experiments give evidence for the stability of special arrangements that may result from the attachment of preformed carbon rings to the fullerene cage. The particular case of C[sub 10] will be discussed, considering the results obtained on complexes with one, two or even three C[sub 60] molecules. This study reveals that the incorporation of large molecules into carbon cages could be an essential mechanism during the growth process of larger fullerenes and that the polymerization of C[sub 60] molecules is promoted by carbon links involving a single atom or a dimer. Abstract

Photoionization mass spectrometry experiments, performed on an extensive size range of aluminum clusters produced by laser vaporization technique, are reported. Ionization potential values are deduced from individual photoionization efficiency curves for the smaller AlN clusters (N=36–112). Our results confirm and complete those previously published. The mass spectra of larger clusters (N≊250–1400) reveal a regular signal oscillation. Several additional experiments give proof that this striking pattern originates from size-dependent ionization threshold effects. This structure exhibits exact periodicity as a function of N1/3 or Ne1/3 (Ne the number of valence electrons). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
