We present a scheme for speeding up quantum measurement. The scheme builds on previous protocols that entangle the system to be measured with ancillary systems. In the idealised situation of perfect entangling operations and no decoherence, it gives an exact space-time trade-off meaning the readout speed increases linearly with the number of ancilla. We verify this scheme is robust against experimental imperfections through numerical modelling of gate noise and readout errors, and under certain circumstances our scheme can even lead to better than linear improvement in the speed of measurement with the number of systems measured. This hardware-agnostic approach is broadly applicable to a range of quantum technology platforms and offers a route to accelerate mid-circuit measurement as required for effective quantum error correction., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Neutral atom arrays have emerged as a versatile platform towards scalable quantum computation and optimization. In this paper we present demonstrations of solving maximum weighted independent set problems on a Rydberg atom array using annealing with local light-shifts. We verify the ability to prepare weighted graphs in 1D and 2D arrays, including embedding a five vertex non-unit disk graph using nine physical qubits and demonstration of a simple crossing gadget. We find common annealing ramps leading to preparation of the target ground state robustly over a substantial range of different graph weightings. This work provides a route to exploring large-scale optimization of non-planar weighted graphs relevant for solving relevant real-world problems., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. We investigate the properties of few interacting bosons in a Creutz ladder, which has become a standard model for topological systems, and which can be realised in experiments with cold atoms in optical lattices. At the single-particle level, this system may exhibit a completely flat energy landscape with non-trivial topological properties. In this scenario, we identify topological two-body edge states resulting from the bonding of single-particle edge and flat-band states. We also explore the formation of two- and three-body bound states in the strongly-interacting limit, and we show how these quasi-particles can be engineered to replicate the flat-band and topological features of the original single-particle model. Furthermore, we show that in this geometry perfect Aharonov-Bohm caging of two-body bound states may occur for arbitrary interaction strengths, and we provide numerical evidence that the main features of this effect are preserved in an interacting many-body scenario resulting in many-body Aharonov-Bohm caging.

A novel 3D micromechanical Finite Element Model (FEM) has been developed to depict the Poynting effect in bi-phasic Representative volume element (RVE) with axons embedded in surrounding extra-cellular matrix (ECM) for simulating the brain white matter response under simple and pure shear. In the proposed 3D FEM, nonlinear Ogden hyper-elastic material model describes axons and ECM materials. The modeled bi-phasic RVEs have axons tied to surrounding matrix. In this proof-of-concept (POC) FEM, three simple shear loading configurations and a pure shear scenario were simulated. Root mean square deviation (RMSD) were computed for stress and deformation response plots to depict role of axon-ECM orientations & loading condition on the Poynting effect. Variations in normal stresses (S11, S22, or S33) perpendicular to the shear plane emphasized role of fiber-matrix interactions. At high strains, the stress-strain% plots also indicated modest strain stiffening effects and bending stresses in purely sheared axons.

Traumatic axonal injury occurs when loads experienced on the tissue-scale are transferred to the individual axons. Mechanical characterization of axon deformation especially under dynamic loads however is extremely difficult owing to their viscoelastic properties. The viscoelastic characterization of axon properties that are based on interpretation of results from in-vivo brain Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) are dependent on the specific frequencies used to generate shear waves with which measurements are made. In this study, we aim to develop a fractional viscoelastic model to characterize the time dependent behavior of the properties of the axons in a composite white matter (WM) model. The viscoelastic powerlaw behavior observed at the tissue level is assumed to exist across scales, from the continuum macroscopic level to that of the microstructural realm of the axons. The material parameters of the axons and glia are fitted to a springpot model. The 3D fractional viscoelastic springpot model is implemented within a finite element framework. The constitutive equations defining the fractional model are coded using a vectorized user defined material (VUMAT) subroutine in ABAQUS finite element software. Using this material characterization, representative volume elements (RVE) of axons embedded in glia with periodic boundary conditions are developed and subjected to a relaxation displacement boundary condition. The homogenized orthotropic fractional material properties of the axon-matrix system as a function of the volume fraction of axons in the ECM are extracted by solving the inverse problem., Comment: Accepted for publication at the 12th International Conference on Mathematical Modeling in Physical Sciences

Square-root topology describes models whose topological properties can be revealed upon squaring the Hamiltonian, which produces their respective parent topological insulators. This concept has recently been generalized to $2^n$-root topology, characterizing models where $n$ squaring operations must be applied to the Hamiltonian in order to arrive at the topological source of the model. In this paper, we analyze the Hofstadter regime of quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) and two-dimensional (2D) $2^n$-root models, the latter of which has the square lattice (SL) (known for the Hofstadter Butterfly) as the source model. We show that upon increasing the root-degree of the model, there appear multiple magnetic flux insensitive flat bands, and analytically determine corresponding eigenstates. These can be recast as compact localized states (CLSs) occupying a finite region of the lattice. For a finite flux, these CLSs correspond to different harmonics contained within the same Aharonov-Bohm (AB) cage. Furthermore, as the root-degree increases, a kaleidoscope of butterflies is seen to appear in the Hofstadter diagram, with each butterfly constituting a topologically equivalent replica of the original one of the SL. As such, the index $n$, which uniquely identifies the root-degree of the model, can be seen as an additional fractal dimension of the $2^n$-root model present in its Hofstadter diagram. We discuss how these dynamics could be realized in experiments with ultracold atoms, and measured by Bragg spectroscopy or through observing dynamics of initially localized atoms in a quantum gas microscope., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures

We show how to estimate a broad class of multipartite entanglement measures from Bell basis measurement data. In addition to lowering the experimental requirements relative to previously known methods of estimating these measures, our proposed scheme also enables a simpler analysis of the number of measurement repetitions required to achieve an $\epsilon$-close approximation of the measures, which we provide for each. We focus our analysis on the recently introduced Concentratable Entanglements [Beckey et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 140501 (2021)] because many other well-known multipartite entanglement measures are recovered as special cases of this family of measures. We extend the definition of the Concentratable Entanglements to mixed states and show how to construct lower bounds on the mixed state Concentratable Entanglements that can also be estimated using only Bell basis measurement data. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility of our methods by realistically simulating their implementation on a Rydberg atom quantum computer., Comment: 5+19 pages. 4+3 figures

A novel finite element method (FEM) is developed to study mechanical response of axons embedded in extra cellular matrix (ECM) when subjected to harmonic uniaxial stretch under purely non-affine kinematic boundary conditions. The proposed modeling approach combines hyper-elastic (such as Ogden model) and time/frequency domain viscoelastic constitutive models to evaluate the effect of parametrically varying oligodendrocyte-axon tethering under harmonic stretch at 50Hz. A hybrid hyper-viscoelastic material (HVE) model enabled the analysis of repeated uniaxial load on stress propagation and damage accumulation in white matter. In the proposed FEM, oligodendrocyte connections to axons are depicted via a spring-dashpot model. This tethering technique facilitates contact definition at various locations, parameterizes connection points and varies stiffness of connection hubs. Results from a home-grown FE submodel configuration of a single oligodendrocyte tethered to axons at various locations are presented. Root mean square deviation (RMSD) are computed between stress-strain plots to depict trends in mechanical response. Steady-state dynamic (SSD) simulations show stress relaxation in axons. Gradual axonal softening under repetitive loads is illustrated employing Prony series - HVE models. Representative von-Mises stress plots indicate that undulated axons experience bending stresses along their tortuous path, suggesting greater susceptibility to damage accumulation and fatigue failure due to repeated strains.

We present a robust protocol for implementing high-fidelity multiqubit controlled phase gates $(C^kZ)$ on neutral atom qubits coupled to highly excited Rydberg states. Our approach is based on extending adiabatic rapid passage to two-photon excitation via a short-lived intermediate excited state common to alkali-atom Rydberg experiments, accounting for the full impact of spontaneous decay and differential AC Stark shifts from the complete manifold of hyperfine excited states. We evaluate and optimize gate performance, concluding that for Cs and currently available laser frequencies and powers, a $CCZ$ gate with fidelity $\mathcal{F}>0.995$ for three qubits and $CCCZ$ with $\mathcal{F}>0.99$ for four qubits is attainable in $\sim 1.8$~$\mu$s via this protocol. Higher fidelities are accessible with future technologies, and our results highlight the ultility of neutral atom arrays for the native implementation of multiqubit unitaries., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures + supplemental material (3 pages, 2 figures)

In flat-band systems, destructive interference leads to the localization of non-interacting particles and forbids their motion through the lattice. However, in the presence of interactions the overlap between neighbouring single-particle localized eigenstates may enable the propagation of bound pairs of particles. In this work, we show how these interaction-induced hoppings can be tuned to obtain a variety of two-body topological states. In particular, we consider two interacting bosons loaded into the orbital angular momentum $l=1$ states of a diamond-chain lattice, wherein an effective $\pi$ flux may yield a completely flat single-particle energy landscape. In the weakly-interacting limit, we derive effective single-particle models for the two-boson quasiparticles which provide an intuitive picture of how the topological states arise. By means of exact diagonalization calculations, we benchmark these states and we show that they are also present for strong interactions and away from the strict flat-band limit. Furthermore, we identify a set of doubly localized two-boson flat-band states that give rise to a special instance of Aharonov-Bohm cages for arbitrary interactions.

The discovery of artificial gauge fields, controlling the dynamics of uncharged particles that otherwise elude the influence of standard electric or magnetic fields, has revolutionized the field of quantum simulation. Hence, developing new techniques to induce those fields is essential to boost quantum simulation in photonic structures. Here, we experimentally demonstrate in a photonic lattice the generation of an artificial gauge field by modifying the input state, overcoming the need to modify the geometry along the evolution or imposing the presence of external fields. In particular, we show that an effective magnetic flux naturally appears when light beams carrying orbital angular momentum are injected into waveguide lattices with certain configurations. To demonstrate the existence of that flux, we measure the resulting Aharonov-Bohm caging effect. Therefore, we prove the possibility of switching on and off artificial gauge fields by changing the topological charge of the input state, paving the way to access different topological regimes in one single structure, which represents an important step forward for optical quantum simulation.

We propose a realization of a two-dimensional higher-order topological insulator with ultracold atoms loaded into orbital angular momentum (OAM) states of an optical lattice. The symmetries of the OAM states induce relative phases in the tunneling amplitudes that allow to describe the system in terms of two decoupled lattice models. Each of these models displays one-dimensional edge states and zero-dimensional corner states that are correlated with the topological properties of the bulk. We show that the topologically non-trivial regime can be explored in a wide range of experimentally feasible values of the parameters of the physical system. Furthermore, we propose an alternative way to characterize the second-order topological corner states based on the computation of the Zak's phases of the bands of first-order edge states.

We show how strongly correlated ultracold bosonic atoms loaded in specific orbital angular momentum states of arrays of cylindrically symmetric potentials can realize a variety of spin-1/2 models of quantum magnetism. We consider explicitly the dependence of the effective couplings on the geometry of the system and demonstrate that several models of interest related to a general $XYZ$ Heisenberg model with external field can be obtained. Furthermore, we discuss how the relative strength of the effective couplings can be tuned and which phases can be explored by doing so in realistic setups. Finally, we address questions concerning the experimental read-out and implementation and we argue that the stability of the system can be enhanced by using ring-shaped trapping potentials.

A quantum device for measuring two-body interactions, scalar magnetic fields and rotations is proposed using a Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC) in a ring trap. We consider an imbalanced superposition of orbital angular momentum modes with opposite winding numbers for which a rotating minimal atomic density line appears. We derive an analytical model relating the angular frequency of the minimal density line rotation to the strength of the non-linear atom-atom interactions and the difference between the populations of the counter-propagating modes. Additionally, we propose a full experimental protocol based on direct fluorescence imaging of the BEC that allows to measure all the quantities involved in the analytical model and use the system for sensing purposes.

We show that bosonic atoms loaded into orbital angular momentum $l=1$ states of a lattice in a diamond-chain geometry provides a flexible and simple platform for exploring a range of topological effects. This system exhibits robust edge states, and the relative phases arising naturally in the tunnelling amplitudes lead to the appearance of Aharanov-Bohm caging in the lattice. We discuss how these properties can be realised and observed in ongoing experiments.

We study the single-particle properties of a system formed by ultracold atoms loaded into the manifold of $l=1$ Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) states of an optical lattice with a diamond chain geometry. Through a series of successive basis rotations, we show that the OAM degree of freedom induces phases in some tunneling amplitudes of the tight-binding model that are equivalent to a net $\pi$ flux through the plaquettes and give rise to a topologically non-trivial band structure and protected edge states. In addition, we demonstrate that quantum interferences between the different tunneling processes involved in the dynamics may lead to Aharanov-Bohm caging in the system. All these analytical results are confirmed by exact diagonalization numerical calculations.
