This paper presents an updated scaling relation between the optical luminosity density (LD) of galaxies in the $r$ band and the density of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) in cosmic filaments, using the high-resolution EAGLE simulations. We find a strong degree of correlation between the WHIM density and the galaxy luminosity density, resulting in a scaling relation between the two quantities that permits to predict the WHIM density of filaments with a scatter of less than $\frac{1}{2}$ dex in a broad range of smoothed filament luminosity densities. In order to estimate the performance of the simulation-based calibration of the LD-WHIM density relation, we applied it to a sample of low-redshift filaments detected with the \emph{Bisous} method in the Legacy Survey SDSS~DR12 data. In the volume covered by the SDSS data, our relation predicts a WHIM density amounting to $31\pm7\pm12$ % (statistical errors followed by systematic) of cosmic baryon density. This agrees, albeit within the large uncertainties, with the current estimates of the cosmological missing baryon fraction, implying that our LD-WHIM density relation may be a useful tool in the search for the missing baryons. We study the properties, connectivity, and galaxy content of groups and filaments in the low-density region (cocoon) around A2142 supercluster (SClA2142). We traced the SClA2142 cocoon boundaries by the lowest luminosity-density regions that separate SClA2142 from other superclusters. We determined galaxy filaments and groups in the cocoon and analysed the connectivity of groups, the high density core (HDC) of the supercluster, and the whole of the supercluster. We compared the distribution and properties of galaxies with different star-formation properties in the supercluster and in the cocoon. SClA2142 and the long filament that is connected to it forms the longest straight structure in the Universe detected so far, with a length of $75$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc. The connectivity of the supercluster is C = 6 - 7; poor groups have C = 1 - 2. Long filaments around the supercluster's main body are detached from it at the turnaround region. Galaxies with very old stellar populations lie in systems across a wide range of richness from the richest cluster to poorest groups and single galaxies. They lie even at local densities as low as $D1 < 1$ in the cocoon and up to $D1 > 800$ in the supercluster. Recently quenched galaxies lie in the cocoon mainly in one region and their properties are different in the cocoon and in the supercluster. The star-formation properties of single galaxies are similar across all environments. The collapsing main body of SClA2142 with the detached long filaments near it are evidence of an important epoch in the supercluster evolution. Further studies are needed to understand the reasons of similarity of galaxies with very old stellar populations in extremely different environments. We present a study of the Corona Borealis (CB) supercluster. We determined the high-density cores of the CB and the richest galaxy clusters in them, and studied their dynamical state and galaxy content. We determined filaments in the supercluster to analyse the connectivity of clusters. We compared the mass distribution in the CB with predictions from the spherical collapse model and analysed the acceleration field in the CB. We found that at a radius $R_{\mathrm{30}}$ around clusters in the CB (A2065, A2061, A2089, and Gr2064) (corresponding to the density contrast $\Delta\rho \approx 30$), the galaxy distribution shows a minimum. The $R_{30}$ values for individual clusters lie in the range of $3 - 6$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc. The radii of the clusters (splashback radii) lie in the range of $R_{\mathrm{cl}} \approx 2 - 3$ $R_{\mathrm{vir}}$. The projected phase space diagrams and the comparison with the spherical collapse model suggest that $R_{\mathrm{30}}$ regions have passed turnaround and are collapsing. Galaxy content in clusters varies strongly. The cluster A2061 has the highest fraction of galaxies with old stellar populations, and A2065 has the highest fraction of galaxies with young stellar populations. The number of long filaments near clusters vary from one at A2089 to five at A2061. During the future evolution, the clusters in the main part of the CB may merge and form one of the largest bound systems in the nearby Universe. Another part of the CB, with the cluster Gr2064, will form a separate system. The structures with a current density contrast $\Delta\rho \approx 30$ have passed turnaround and started to collapse at redshifts $z \approx 0.3 - 0.4$. Context. The cosmic web, a complex network of galaxy groups and clusters connected by filaments, is a dynamical environment in which galaxies form and evolve. However, the impact of cosmic filaments on the properties of galaxies is difficult to study because of the much more influential local (galaxy-group scale) environment. Aims. The aim of this paper is to investigate the dependence of intrinsic galaxy properties on distance to the nearest cosmic web filament, using a sample of galaxies for which the local environment is easily assessable.} Methods. Our study is based on a volume-limited galaxy sample with $M_\mathrm{r}$ $\leq -19$ mag, drawn from the SDSS DR12. We chose brightest group galaxies (BGGs) in groups with two to six members as our probes of the impact of filamentary environment because their local environment can be determined more accurately. We use the Bisous marked point process method to detect cosmic-web filaments with radii of $0.5-1.0$ Mpc and measure the perpendicular filament spine distance ($D_{\mathrm{fil}}$) for the BGGs. We limit our study to $D_{\mathrm{fil}}$ values up to 4 Mpc. We use the luminosity density field as a tracer of the local environment. To achieve uniformity of the sample and to reduce potential biases we only consider filaments longer than 5 Mpc. Our final sample contains 1427 BGGs. Results. We note slight deviations between the galaxy populations inside and outside the filament radius in terms of stellar mass, colour, the 4000AA break, specific star formation rates, and morphologies. However, all these differences remain below 95% confidence and are negligible compared to the effects arising from local environment density. Conclusions. Within a 4 Mpc radius of the filament axes, the effect of filaments on BGGs is marginal. We use a volume-limited sample of quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 quasar catalog to identify quasar groups and address their statistical significance. This quasar sample has a uniform selection function on the sky and nearly a maximum possible contiguous volume that can be drawn from the DR7 catalog. Quasar groups are identified by using the Friend-of-Friend algorithm with a set of fixed comoving linking lengths. We find that the richness distribution of the richest 100 quasar groups or the size distribution of the largest 100 groups are statistically equivalent with those of randomly-distributed points with the same number density and sky coverage when groups are identified with the linking length of 70 h-1Mpc. It is shown that the large-scale structures like the huge Large Quasar Group (U1.27) reported by Clowes et al. (2013) can be found with high probability even if quasars have no physical clustering, and does not challenge the initially homogeneous cosmological models. Our results are statistically more reliable than those of Nadathur (2013), where the test was made only for the largest quasar group. It is shown that the linking length should be smaller than 50 h-1Mpc in order for the quasar groups identified in the DR7 catalog not to be dominated by associations of quasars grouped by chance. We present ten years of R-band monitoring data of 31 northern blazars which were either detected at very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays or listed as potential VHE gamma-ray emitters. The data comprise 11 820 photometric data points in the R-band obtained in 2002–2012. We analyzed the light curves by determining their power spectral density (PSD) slopes assuming a power-law dependence with a single slope β and a Gaussian probability density function (PDF). We used the multiple fragments variance function (MFVF) combined with a forward-casting approach and likelihood analysis to determine the slopes and perform extensive simulations to estimate the uncertainties of the derived slopes. We also looked for periodic variations via Fourier analysis and quantified the false alarm probability through a large number of simulations. Comparing the obtained PSD slopes to values in the literature, we find the slopes in the radio band to be steeper than those in the optical and gamma rays. Our periodicity search yielded one target, Mrk 421, with a significant (p < 5%) period. Finding one significant period among 31 targets is consistent with the expected false alarm rate, but the period found in Mrk 421 is very strong and deserves further consideration.

Studying large-scale environments of narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies gives a new perspective on their properties, particularly their radio loudness. The large-scale environment is believed to have an impact on the evolution and intrinsic properties of galaxies, however, NLS1 sources have not been studied in this context before. We have a large and diverse sample of 1341 NLS1 galaxies and three separate environment data sets constructed using Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We use various statistical methods to investigate how the properties of NLS1 galaxies are connected to the large-scale environment, and compare the large-scale environments of NLS1 galaxies with other active galacic nuclei (AGN) classes, for example, other jetted AGN and broad-line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies, to study how they are related. NLS1 galaxies reside in less dense environments than any of the comparison samples, thus confirming their young age. The average large-scale environment density and environmental distribution of NLS1 sources is clearly different compared to BLS1 galaxies, thus it is improbable that they could be the parent population of NLS1 galaxies and unified by orientation. Within the NLS1 class there is a trend of increasing radio loudness with increasing large-scale environment density, indicating that the large-scale environment affects their intrinsic properties. Our results suggest that the NLS1 class of sources is not homogeneous, and furthermore, a considerable fraction of them are misclassified. We study galaxy populations and search for possible merging substructures in the rich galaxy cluster A2142. Normal mixture modelling revealed in A2142 several infalling galaxy groups and subclusters. The projected phase space diagram was used to analyse the dynamics of the cluster and study the distribution of various galaxy populations in the cluster and subclusters. The cluster, supercluster, BCGs, and one infalling subcluster are aligned. Their orientation is correlated with the alignment of the radio and X-ray haloes of the cluster. Galaxies in the centre of the main cluster at the clustercentric distances $0.5~h^{-1}Mpc$ have older stellar populations (with the median age of $10 - 11$~Gyrs) than galaxies at larger clustercentric distances. Star-forming and recently quenched galaxies are located mostly in the infall region at the clustercentric distances $D_{\mathrm{c}} \approx 1.8~h^{-1}Mpc$, where the median age of stellar populations of galaxies is about $2$~Gyrs. Galaxies in A2142 have higher stellar masses, lower star formation rates, and redder colours than galaxies in other rich groups. The total mass in infalling groups and subclusters is $M \approx 6\times10^{14}h^{-1}M_\odot$, approximately half of the mass of the cluster, sufficient for the mass growth of the cluster from redshift $z = 0.5$ (half-mass epoch) to the present. The cluster A2142 may have formed as a result of past and present mergers and infallen groups, predominantly along the supercluster axis. Mergers cause complex radio and X-ray structure of the cluster and affect the properties of galaxies in the cluster, especially in the infall region. The Millennium N-body simulation and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey seventh data release (SDSS DR7) galaxy and galaxy group catalogues are compared to study the properties of galaxy groups and the distribution of galaxies in groups. We construct mock galaxy group catalogues for a Millennium semi-analytical galaxy catalogue by using the same friends-of-friends method, which was used by Tago et al to analyse the SDSS data. We analyse in detail the group luminosities, group richnesses, virial radii, sizes of groups and their rms velocities for four volume-limited samples from observations and simulations. Our results show that the spatial densities of groups agree within one order of magnitude in all samples with a rather good agreement between the mock catalogues and observations. All group property distributions have similar shapes and amplitudes for richer groups. For galaxy pairs and small groups, the group properties for observations and simulations are clearly different. In addition, the spatial distribution of galaxies in small groups is different: at the outskirts of the groups the galaxy number distributions do not agree, although the agreement is relatively good in the inner regions. Differences in the distributions are mainly due to the observational limitations in the SDSS sample and to the problems in the semi-analytical methods that produce too compact and luminous groups., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures

The cosmological missing baryons at z < 1 most likely hide in the hot (T ≳ 105.5 K) phase of the warm hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). While the hot WHIM is hard to detect due to its high ionisation level, the warm (T ≲ 105.5 K) phase of the WHIM has been very robustly detected in the far-ultraviolet (FUV) band. We adopted the assumption that the hot and warm WHIM phases are co-located and therefore used the FUV-detected warm WHIM as a tracer for the cosmologically interesting hot WHIM. We performed an X-ray follow-up in the sight line of the blazar PKS 2155–304 at the redshifts where previous FUV measurements of O VI, Si IV, and broad Lyman-alpha (BLA) absorption have indicated the existence of the warm WHIM. We looked for the O VII Heα and O VIII Lyα absorption lines, the most likely hot WHIM tracers. Despite the very large exposure time (≈1 Ms), the Reflection Grating Spectrometer unit 1 (RGS1) on-board XMM-Newton data yielded no significant detection which corresponds to upper limits of log N(O VII(cm−2)) ≤ 14.5−15.2 and log N(O VIII(cm−2)) ≤ 14.5−15.2. An analysis of the data obtained with the combination of the Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETG) and the High Resolution Camera (HRC) on-board Chandra yielded consistent results. However, the data obtained with the LETG, combined with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) lead to the detection of an feature resembling an absorption line at λ ≈ 20 Å at simple one-parameter confidence level of 3.7σ, consistent with several earlier LETG/ACIS reports. Given the high statistical quality of the RGS1 data, the possibility of RGS1 accidentally missing the true line at λ ∼ 20 Å is very low: 0.006%. Neglecting this, the LETG/ACIS detection can be interpreted as Lyα transition of O VIII at one of the redshifts (z ≈ 0.054) of FUV-detected warm WHIM. Given the very convincing X-ray spectral evidence for and against the existence of the λ ∼ 20 Å feature, we cannot conclude whether or not it is a true astrophysical absorption line. Considering cosmological simulations, the probability of the LETG/ACIS λ ∼ 20 Å feature being due to the astrophysical O VIII absorber co-located with the FUV-detected O VI absorber is at the very low level of ≲0.1%. We cannot completely rule out the very unlikely possibility that the LETG/ACIS 20 Å feature is due to a transient event located close to the blazar.

We study the dynamical state and properties of galaxies and groups in the supercluster SClA2142 that has a collapsing core, to understand its possible formation and evolution. We find the substructure of galaxy groups using normal mixture modelling. We have used the projected phase space (PPS) diagram, spherical collapse model, clustercentric distances, and magnitude gap between the brightest galaxies in groups to study the dynamical state of groups and to analyse group and galaxy properties. We compared the alignments of groups and their brightest galaxies with the supercluster axis. The supercluster core has a radius of about $8 h^{-1}$Mpc and total mass $M_{\mathrm{tot}} \approx 2.3\times~10^{15}h^{-1}M_\odot$ and is collapsing. Galaxies in groups on the supercluster axis have older stellar populations than off-axis groups, with median stellar ages $4 - 6$ and $< 4$Gyr, correspondingly. The cluster A2142 and the group Gr8 both host galaxies with the oldest stellar populations among groups in SClA2142 having the median stellar age $t > 8$Gyr. Recently quenched galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are mostly located at virial radii or in merging regions of groups, and at clustercentric distances $D_c \approx 6 h^{-1}$ Mpc. The most elongated groups lie along the supercluster axis and are aligned with it. Magnitude gaps between the brightest galaxies of groups are less than one magnitude, suggesting that groups in SClA2142 are dynamically young. The BL Lac object RGB 1745+398 lies in an environment that makes it possible to study the cluster around it more deeply than the environments of other BL Lac objects. The cluster centered on the BL Lac works as a strong gravitational lens, forming a large arc around itself. The aim of this paper is to study the environment and characteristics of this object more accurately than the environments of other BL Lac objects have been before.We measured the redshifts of galaxies in the cluster from the absorption lines in their spectra. The velocity dispersion was then obtained from the redshifts. The gravitational lensing was used for measuring the mass at the center of the cluster. The mass of the whole cluster could then be estimated using the softened isothermal sphere mass distribution. Finally, the richness of the cluster was determined by counting the number of galaxies near the BL Lac object and obtaining the galaxy-BL Lac spatial covariance function, $B_{gb}$. The redshifts of nine galaxies in the field were measured to be near the redshift of the BL Lac object, confirming the presence of a cluster. The average redshift of the cluster is 0.268, and the velocity dispersion $(470^{+190}_{-110})$ km s$^{-1}$. The mass of the cluster is $M_{500}=(4^{+3}_{-2})\times10^{14} M_{\sun}$ which implies a rather massive cluster. The richness measurement also suggests that this is a rich cluster: the result for covariance function is $B_{gb}=(600\pm200)$ Mpc$^{1.77}$, which corresponds to Abell richness class 1 and which is consistent with the mass and velocity dispersion of the cluster.

The nature versus nurture scenario in galaxy and group evolution is a long-standing problem not yet fully understood on cosmological scales. We study the properties of groups and their central galaxies in different large-scale environments defined by the luminosity density field and the cosmic web filaments. We use the luminosity density field constructed using 8 Mpc/h smoothing to characterize the large-scale environments and the Bisous model to extract the filamentary structures in different large-scale environments. We find differences in the properties of central galaxies and their groups in and outside of filaments at fixed halo and large-scale environments. In high-density environments, the group mass function has higher number densities in filaments compared to that outside of filaments towards the massive end. The relation is opposite in low-density environments. At fixed group mass and large-scale luminosity density, groups in filaments are slightly more luminous and their central galaxies have redder colors, higher stellar masses, and lower specific star formation rates than those outside of filaments. However, the differences in central galaxy and group properties in and outside of filaments are not clear in some group mass bins. We show that the differences in central galaxy properties are due to the higher abundances of elliptical galaxies in filaments. Filamentary structures in the cosmic web are not simply visual associations of galaxies, but rather play an important role in shaping the properties of groups and their central galaxies. The differences in central galaxy and group properties in and outside of cosmic web filaments are not simple effects related to large-scale environmental density. To understand the role of the environment in galaxy formation, evolution, and present-day properties, it is essential to study the multi-frequency behavior of different galaxy populations under various environmental conditions. We crossmatch the SDSS DR10 group catalog with GAMA Data Release 2 and Wide-field Survey Explorer (WISE) data to construct a catalog of 1651 groups and 11436 galaxies containing photometric information in 15 different wavebands ranging from ultraviolet (0.152 {\mu}m) to mid-infrared (22 {\mu}m). We perform the spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting of galaxies using the MAGPHYS code and estimate the rest frame luminosities and stellar masses. We use the 1/Vmax method to estimate the galaxy stellar mass and luminosity functions, and the luminosity density field of galaxies to define the large scale environment of galaxies. The stellar mass functions of both central and satellite galaxies in groups are different in low and high density large scale environments. Satellite galaxies in high density environments have a steeper low mass end slope compared to low density environments, independently of the galaxy morphology. Central galaxies in low density environments have a steeper low mass end slope but the difference disappears for fixed galaxy morphology. The characteristic stellar mass of satellite galaxies is higher in high density environments and the difference exists only for galaxies with elliptical morphologies. Galaxy formation in groups is more efficient in high density large scale environments. Groups in high density environments have higher abundances of satellite galaxies, irrespective of the satellite galaxy morphology. The elliptical satellite galaxies are generally more massive in high density environments. We have compared numerical simulations to observations for the nearby (< 40 Mpc) groups of galaxies (Huchra & Geller 1982 and Ramella et al. 2002). The group identification is carried out using a group-finding algorithm developed by Huchra and Geller (1982). Using cosmological N-body simulation code with the LambdaCDM cosmology, we show that the dynamical properties of groups of galaxies identified from the simulation data are, in general, in a moderate, within 2sigma, agreement with the observational catalogues of groups of galaxies. As simulations offer more dynamical information than observations, we used the N-body simulation data to calculate whether the nearby groups of galaxies are gravitationally bound objects by using their virial ratio. We show that in a LambdaCDM cosmology about 20 per cent of nearby groups of galaxies, identified by the same algorithm as in the case of observations, are not bound, but merely groups in a visual sense. This is quite significant, specifically because estimations of group masses in observations are often based on an assumption that groups of galaxies found by the friends-of-friends algorithm are gravitationally bound objects. Simulations with different resolutions show the same results. We also show how the fraction of gravitationally unbound groups varies when the apparent magnitude limit of the sample and the value of the cosmological constant is changed. The cold dark matter (CDM) scenario generically predicts the existence of triaxial dark matter haloes which contain notable amounts of substructure. However, analytical halo models with smooth, spherically symmetric density profiles are routinely adopted in the modelling of light propagation effects through such objects. In this paper, we address the biases introduced by this procedure by comparing the surface mass densities of actual N-body haloes against the widely used analytical model suggested by Navarro, Frenk and White (1996) (NFW). We conduct our analysis in the redshift range of 0.0 - 1.5. In cluster sized haloes, we find that triaxiality can cause scatter in the surface mass density of the haloes up to sigma_+ = +60% and sigma_- = -70%, where the 1-sigma limits are relative to the analytical NFW model given value. Subhaloes can increase this scatter to sigma_+ = +70% and sigma_- = -80%. In galaxy sized haloes, the triaxial scatter can be as high as sigma_+ = +80% and sigma_- = -70%, and with subhaloes the values can change to sigma_+ = +40% and sigma_- = -80%. We present an analytical model for the surface mass density scatter as a function of distance to the halo centre, halo redshift and halo mass. The analytical description enables one to investigate the reliability of results obtained with simplified halo models. Additionally, it provides the means to add simulated surface density scatter to analytical density profiles. As an example, we discuss the impact of our results on the calculation of microlensing optical depths for MACHOs in CDM haloes.

We propose a new approach to the missing baryons problem. Building on the common assumption that the missing baryons are in the form of the Warm Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM), we further assumed here that the galaxy luminosity density can be used as a tracer of the WHIM. The latter assumption is supported by our finding of a significant correlation between the WHIM density and the galaxy luminosity density in the hydrodynamical simulations of Cui et al. (2012). We further found that the fraction of the gas mass in the WHIM phase is substantially (by a factor of $\sim$1.6) higher within the large scale galactic filaments, i.e. $\sim$70\%, compared to the average in the full simulation volume of $\sim$0.1\,Gpc$^3$. The relation between the WHIM overdensity and the galaxy luminosity overdensity within the galactic filaments is consistent with linear: $\delta_{\rm whim}\,=\,0.7\,\pm\,0.1\,\times\,\delta_\mathrm{LD}^{0.9 \pm 0.2}$. We applied our procedure to the line of sight to the blazar H2356-309 and found evidence for the WHIM in correspondence of the Sculptor Wall (z $\sim$0.03 and $\log{N_H}$ = $19.9^{+0.1}_{-0.3}$) and Pisces-Cetus superclusters (z $\sim$0.06 and $\log{N_H}$ = $19.7^{+0.2}_{-0.3}$), in agreement with the redshifts and column densities of the X-ray absorbers identified and studied by Fang et al. (2010) and Zappacosta et al. (2010). This agreement indicates that the galaxy luminosity density and galactic filaments are reliable signposts for the WHIM and that our method is robust in estimating the WHIM density. The signal that we detected cannot originate from the halos of the nearby galaxies since they cannot account for the large WHIM column densities that our method and X-ray analysis consistently find in the Sculptor Wall and Pisces-Cetus superclusters., Comment: Accepted for Astronomy & Astrophysics

We use the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey data to compile catalogues of superclusters for the Northern and Southern regions of the 2dFGRS, altogether 543 superclusters at redshifts 0.009 < z < 0.2. We analyse methods of compiling supercluster catalogues and use results of the Millennium Simulation to investigate possible selection effects and errors. We find that the most effective method is the density field method using smoothing with an Epanechnikov kernel of radius 8 Mpc/h. We derive positions of the highest luminosity density peaks and find the most luminous cluster in the vicinity of the peak, this cluster is considered as the main cluster and its brightest galaxy the main galaxy of the supercluster. In catalogues we give equatorial coordinates and distances of superclusters as determined by positions of their main clusters. The current cosmological paradigm sees the formation and evolution of the cosmic large-scale structure as governed by the gravitational attraction of the Dark Matter (DM) and the repulsion of the Dark Energy (DE). We characterize the relative importance of uniform and constant dark energy, as given by the Lambda term in the standard LCDM cosmology, in galaxy systems of different scales, from groups to superclusters. An instructive "Lambda significance graph" is introduced where the matter-DE density ratio /rho_Lambda for different galaxy systems is plotted against the radius R. This presents gravitation and DE dominated regions and shows directly the zero velocity radius, the zero-gravity radius, and the Einstein-Straus radius for any fixed value of mass. Example galaxy groups and clusters from the local universe illustrate the use of the Lambda significance graph. These are generally located deep in the gravity-dominated region /rho_Lambda > 2, being virialized. Extended clusters and main bodies of superclusters can reach down near the border line between gravity-dominated and DE dominated regions /rho_Lambda = 2. The scale--mass relation from the standard 2-point correlation function intersects this balance line near the correlation lenght. The log /rho_Lambda vs. log R diagram is a useful and versatile way to characterize the dynamical state of systems of galaxies within the Lambda dominated expanding universe., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We present intensive optical, infrared, and radio monitoring observations of the BL Lac object OJ 287, taken between the years 1993-1998. Two large optical outbursts were detected at the predicted times in November 1994 and December 1995. The detection of these outbursts supports the binary black hole model for OJ 287. Optical and radio polarisation observations show large variability in the degree of polarisation and position angle, very similar to those observed during the 1983/84 outburst in OJ 287. The polarisation position angles show very similar behaviour during these observations, indicating that, at least, the magnetic field orientations in radio and optical bands are related in OJ 287. Optical and infrared light curves show continuous variability in time scales ranging from tens of minutes to years. In the radio bands we have observed some of the lowest ever measured flux levels. During the first optical outburst in November 1994 the observed radio flux was very low, but during the second optical outburst radio bands also showed high flux levels. This is a puzzling observation, which can hopefully be used for discriminating between different outburst models. On top of the large outbursts OJ 287 has displayed flaring activity in time scales from days to weeks and shorter time scale flickering.

We present results of optical monitoring of quasars and blazars obtained at Tuorla Observatory between September 1995 and May 1997. The aim of our monitoring is to provide well sampled optical light curves for quasar and blazar studies. During the observing period the V -band brightness of S2 0109+224, 3C 66A, and ON 231 (W Comae) reached some of the brightest values ever measured for these objects. A strong outburst was observed in Mrk 421 and the large outburst, which was predicted earlier, in OJ 287 was confirmed. CTA 102 had over one magnitude outburst which happened in a timescale of a few days. For OI 090.4 we measured one of the faintest V -band brightness values ever.

The theory of double radio sources is considered from two different points of view: the so called unified models and the slingshot model. First, observations and theory are discussed in 11 areas: (1) the dependence or independence of small-scale and large-scale jets from each other; (2) stability and existence of large-scale jets; (3) radio hot spots inside the lobes of double radio sources; (4) the relation of double-lobed quasars to radio galaxies; (5) polarization and other asymmetries between the two lobes and correlations among them; (6) the speeds of advance of radio lobes; (7) giant radio sources; (8) one-sided double radio sources; (9) multiple-sided double radio sources; (10) the origin of the Fanaroff-Riley classes of radio morphology; and (11) the origin of distance asymmetries of the radio lobes. Then five steps in building up a double radio source theory are discussed: (1) theory of galaxy mergers; (2) theory of black hole mergers; (3) theory of black hole interactions and ejections; (4) theory of radio lobe formation and evolution; and (5) radio jet theory. Finally, recent X-ray observations by ROSAT are discussed from the point of view of double radio source theory.

We have investigated the behavior of a general Newtonian three body system using the simplest initial conditions. We calculated the evolution of about a million bound three body systems. Within our resolution these cover all the possible initial states. All these systems eventually decay with one body being ejected from the residual binary system. The overall pattern representing the decay time scales projected on a homology map is dominated by resonances. In general appearance it reminds us of a traditional Masaai warrior shield.

The formation of a multiple black hole system via merging processes of galaxies is simulated. Starting from the hierarchical halo merger model by Lacey and Cole (1993) and the general assumption that supermassive black holes (> 106M⊙) are common in the nuclei of galaxies we followed the formation of a four black hole system. Ultimately, instability of the four body system led to 835 symmetric two-sided slingshot ejections out of 10,000 simulations. This result was applied to the most straightforward application of the slingshot process, namely to the origin of extended radio sources.

The evolution of three and four black hole clusters which arise in mergers of small galaxy groups have been simulated. Typically, the chaotic dynamics of these multiple black hole systems leads to a decay via the slingshot process. Orbits of 100,000 initial configurations have been calculated and the final configurations have been classified in seven different categories. Examples of the orbits in each category are illustrated.

An ensemble of Newtonian three-body models with close initial separations is investigated by following the evolution of a ‘drop’ in the homology map. The onset of chaos is revealed by the motion and the complex temporal deformation of the drop. In the state of advanced chaos, the drop spreads over almost the whole homology map, quite independently of its initial position on the map. A general quantitative measure of this process is the mean exponential rate of spreading, which bears resemblance to Kolmogorov–Sinai entropy; this is introduced and estimated in terms of the homology mapping. In a similar manner we also estimate the mean exponential rate of divergence of initially close-by trajectories. This is a close analogue to the Lyapunov exponent. These parameters measure two complementary aspects of dynamical instability, which is the basic mechanism of the onset of chaos.

ABSTRA C T We have studied the structure of chaos in three-body dynamics using the concept of intermittency, implying that violent states of a system alternate in time with quasi-regular states producing together a non-stationary and evolving pattern of unpredictable behaviour. Computer simulations are produced to demonstrate explicitly sporadic short violent bursts in quasi-regular hierarchical states of the systems. This is seen both in orbits and in the long time series generated by the system. The time series prove to be similar in shape to what is observed in various physical experiments with laboratory chaotic systems when they reveal the so-called type-III intermittency. The new effective methods of time series analysis enable us to discover a strange attractor with a fractal dimension slightly above 2. This shows that three-body dynamics has the same intrinsic qualitative structure and quantitative measure of chaos as the widely known chaotic system, the Lorenz attractor.

We present the most continuous data base of optical multiband data ever published on the BL Lacertae object ON 231 (W Com). The data have been collected during an intensive and coordinated BVRcIc monitoring campaign carried out in the period from March 1994 to March 1997. During our campaign, the source brightness was at the highest level ever observed. The light curve shows a complex structure, characterized by the pres- ence of three major outbursts having the observed max- ima in March 1995, February 1996, and January 1997, when ON 231 reached its historical maximum (B' 14:2). Variability on time scales from a few hours up to a month have frequently been observed and the light curve seems to be the superposition of many flares with dierent ampli- tudes and time scales. The broad-band optical spectral en- ergy distribution is characterized by a spectral slope which correlates with the flux level. In particular, the higher is the flux the flatter is the spectrum.

In the Canes Venatici cloud, eighteen dwarf irregular galaxies were observed in B; V bands at the Nordic Optical Telescope under a seeing of one arc- sec. Most of the galaxies having radial velocities V0 < 500 km/s have been resolved into stars for the rst time. The galaxy distances were derived based on photome- try of their brightest blue stars. Distances to some of the galaxies: UGC 6782, UGC 7131 and, probably, K 215, which are located at the CVn southern edge, were es- timated to be about 15 Mpc, which is typical of the Virgo cluster outskirts. For two LSB galaxies, K 200 and K 215, the distances may be overestimated, probably be- cause of a lack of young massive stars. For the remaining galaxies: UGC 7559, UGC 7599, UGC 7605, UGC 7639, UGC 7698, UGCA 290, UGCA 292, UGC 7866, UGC 8024, UGC 8638, UGC 8651, UGC 8760, and UGC 8833 the estimated distances range from 2.3 to 8.0 Mpc, indicating their actual membership in the CVn cloud. Several objects studied here (UGC 7605, UGC 7639, UGC 8638, UGC 8833) have a well-resolved bluish core and regular yellow outer parts, which may point to composite (new and old) populations. The galaxy UGCA 292 = CVn dwA has unusual global parameters: (B V )T=+0.08, MT = 11:4, M(HI)=LB =6 M=L andM(HI)=MT =0 :7, being, perhaps, one of the youngest known objects in the Local Universe.

We have developed a new method to approach the missing baryons problem. We assume that the missing baryons reside in a form of Warm Hot Intergalactic Medium, i.e. the WHIM. Our method consists of (a) detecting the coherent large scale structure in the spatial distribution of galaxies that traces the Cosmic Web and that in hydrodynamical simulations is associated to the WHIM, (b) map its luminosity into a galaxy luminosity density field, (c) use numerical simulations to relate the luminosity density to the density of the WHIM, (d) apply this relation to real data to trace the WHIM using the observed galaxy luminosities in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and 2dF redshift surveys. In our application we find evidence for the WHIM along the line of sight to the Sculptor Wall, at redshifts consistent with the recently reported X-ray absorption line detections. Our indirect WHIM detection technique complements the standard method based on the detection of characteristic X-ray absorption lines, showing that the galaxy luminosity density is a reliable signpost for the WHIM. For this reason, our method could be applied to current galaxy surveys to optimise the observational strategies for detecting and studying the WHIM and its properties. Our estimates of the WHIM hydrogen column density in Sculptor agree with those obtained via the X-ray analysis. The results of DAOPHOT photometry of several hundred stars in five irregular galaxies are presented using V and I CCD frames, obtained with the Nordic Optical Telescope under a 0.6 arcsec seeing. Based on the brightest blue and red stars we estimate the following distances to the galaxies: 3.2 Mpc for UGCA 105, 2.6 Mpc for UGCA 86, 1.8 Mpc for UGCA 92, 1.7 Mpc for NGC 1569, and 1.7 Mpc for Cas 1. The problem of membership of the galaxies to the IC 342/Maffei complex is briefly discussed.

In the cosmic web, galaxy superclusters or their high-density cores are the largest objects that may collapse at present or during the future evolution. We study the dynamical state and possible future evolution of galaxy superclusters from the Sloan Great Wall (SGW), the richest galaxy system in the nearby Universe. We calculated supercluster masses using dynamical masses of galaxy groups and stellar masses of galaxies. We employed normal mixture modelling to study the structure of rich SGW superclusters and search for components (cores) in superclusters. We analysed the radial mass distribution in the high-density cores of superclusters centred approximately at rich clusters and used the spherical collapse model to study their dynamical state. We found that the lower limit of the total mass of the SGW is approximately $M = 2.5\times~10^{16}h^{-1}M_\odot$. Different mass estimators of superclusters agree well, the main uncertainties in masses of superclusters come from missing groups and clusters. We detected three high-density cores in the richest SGW supercluster (SCl~027) and two in the second richest supercluster (SCl~019). They have masses of $1.2 - 5.9 \times~10^{15}h^{-1}M_\odot$ and sizes of up to $\approx 60 h^{-1}$ Mpc. The high-density cores of superclusters are very elongated, flattened perpendicularly to the line of sight. The comparison of the radial mass distribution in the high-density cores with the predictions of spherical collapse model suggests that their central regions with radii smaller than $8 h^{-1}$Mpc and masses of up to $M = 2\times~10^{15}h^{-1}M_\odot$ may be collapsing. The momentum flux in merging binary black holes is rediscussed using the actual orbit integrations. The terminal velocity acquired by the centre of mass of the system is found to be greater than the estimate of Fitchett (1983) by a factor of 1.45. The actual value in km s−1 is still uncertain but may be as high as 2000 km s−1. The centre of mass velocity kick at a black hole merger is incorporated in the orbit integration of few black hole systems. Assuming that the symmetric break-up mode of such systems corresponds to the classical double radio sources, we determine that the centre of mass velocity kick can be about 1000 km s−1 at most.

Majority of all galaxies reside in groups of less than 50 member galaxies. These groups are distributed in various large-scale environments from voids to superclusters. Evolution of galaxies is affected by the environment in which they reside. Our aim is to study the effects that the local group scale and the supercluster scale environment have on galaxies. We use a luminosity-density field to determine density of the large-scale environment of galaxies in groups of various richness. We calculate fractions of different types of galaxies in groups with richnesses up to 50 member galaxies and in different large-scale environments from voids to superclusters. The fraction of passive elliptical galaxies rises and the fraction of star-forming spiral galaxies declines when the richness of a group of galaxies rises from two to approximately ten galaxies. On the large scale, the passive elliptical galaxies become more numerous than star-forming spirals when the environmental density grows to the density level typical for superclusters. The large-scale environment affects the level of these fractions in groups: galaxies in equally rich groups are more likely to be elliptical in supercluster environments than in lower densities. The crossing point, where the number of passive and star-forming galaxies is equal, happens in groups with lower richness in superclusters than in voids. Galaxies in low-density areas require richer groups to evolve from star-forming to passive. Groups in superclusters are on average more luminous than groups in large-scale environments with lower density. Our results suggest that the evolution of galaxies is affected by both, by the group in which the galaxy resides, and by its large-scale environment. We study the relations between the multimodality of galaxy clusters drawn from the SDSS DR8 and the environment where they reside. As cluster environment we consider the global luminosity density field, supercluster membership, and supercluster morphology. We use 3D normal mixture modelling, the Dressler-Shectman test, and the peculiar velocity of cluster main galaxies as signatures of multimodality of clusters. We calculate the luminosity density field to study the environmental densities around clusters, and to find superclusters where clusters reside. We determine the morphology of superclusters with the Minkowski functionals and compare the properties of clusters in superclusters of different morphology. We apply principal component analysis to study the relations between the multimodality parametres of clusters and their environment simultaneously. We find that multimodal clusters reside in higher density environment than unimodal clusters. Clusters in superclusters have higher probability to have substructure than isolated clusters. The superclusters can be divided into two main morphological types, spiders and filaments. Clusters in superclusters of spider morphology have higher probabilities to have substructure and larger peculiar velocities of their main galaxies than clusters in superclusters of filament morphology. The most luminous clusters are located in the high-density cores of rich superclusters. Five of seven most luminous clusters, and five of seven most multimodal clusters reside in spider-type superclusters; four of seven most unimodal clusters reside in filament-type superclusters. Properties of galaxies depend on their large-scale environment. As the influence of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in galaxy evolution is becoming more evident, their large scale environments may help us understand the evolutionary processes leading to activity. The effect of activity can be seen particularly by showing if different types of active galaxies are formed by similar mechanisms. Our aim is to study the supercluster-scale environments of active galaxies up to redshift 0.4. Our data includes quasars, BL Lac objects, Seyfert and radio galaxies. We use a three-dimensional low-resolution luminosity-density field constructed of a sample of luminous red galaxies in the seventh data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We calculate the average density of this field in a volume of a 3\,$h^{-1}$Mpc sphere around each AGN for estimating the environmental density levels of different types of AGN. This analysis gives us the distribution of AGN in the global environment of superclusters, filaments, and voids. Our results show that while radio-quiet quasars and Seyfert galaxies are mostly located in low-density regions, radio galaxies have higher environmental densities. BL Lac objects usually have low-density environments, but some of them are also in very high density regions. Our results give support to the theory of galaxy evolution where galaxies are affected by two modes of AGN feedback: quasar mode that turns a blue star-forming galaxy into a red and dead one, and radio mode that regulates the growth of massive elliptical galaxies. We conclude that quasars are in lower density environments than radio galaxies most likely because the galaxies in rich environments have evolved to a state suitable for radio-loud activity earlier. We present the results of the study of the morphology and galaxy content of the Sloan Great Wall (SGW). We use the luminosity density field to determine superclusters in the SGW, and the fourth Minkowski functional V_3 and the morphological signature (the K_1-K_2 shapefinders curve) to show the different morphologies of the SGW, from a single filament to a multibranching, clumpy planar system. The richest supercluster in the SGW, SCl~126 and especially its core resemble a very rich filament, while another rich supercluster in the SGW, SCl~111, resembles a "multispider" - an assembly of high density regions connected by chains of galaxies. Using Minkowski functionals we study the substructure of individual galaxy populations determined by their color in these superclusters. We assess the statistical significance of the results with the halo model and smoothed bootstrap. We study the galaxy content and the properties of groups of galaxies in two richest superclusters of the SGW, paying special attention to bright red galaxies (BRGs) and to the first ranked galaxies in SGW groups. About 1/3 of BRGs are spirals. The scatter of colors of elliptical BRGs is smaller than that of spiral BRGs. About half of BRGs and of first ranked galaxies in groups have large peculiar velocities. Groups with elliptical BRGs as their first ranked galaxies populate superclusters more uniformly than the groups, which have a spiral BRG as its first ranked galaxy. The galaxy and group content of the core of the supercluster SCl~126 shows several differences in comparison with the outskirts of this supercluster and with the supercluster SCl~111. Giant radio galaxies create the well distinguishable class of sources. These sources are characterized with edge-brightened radio lobes with highly collimated radio jets and large linear sizes which make them the largest individual structures in the Universe. They are also known to be hosted by elliptical/disturbed host galaxies and avoid clusters and high galaxy density regions. Because of GRG, large linear sizes lobes extend well beyond the interstellar media and host galaxy halo the evolution of the radio lobes may depend on interaction with this environment. Using our method to extract filamentary structure of the galaxies in our local universe we study whether radio lobe properties in some giant radio galaxies are determined on an interaction of this filament ambient.

We present the results of the study of the substructure and galaxy content of ten rich clusters of galaxies in three different superclusters of the Sloan Great Wall. We determine the substructure in clusters using the 'Mclust' package from the 'R' statistical environment and analyse their galaxy content. We analyse the distribution of the peculiar velocities of galaxies in clusters and calculate the peculiar velocity of the first ranked galaxy. We show that clusters in our sample have more than one component; in some clusters different components also have different galaxy content. We find that in some clusters with substructure the peculiar velocities of the first ranked galaxies are large. All clusters in our sample host luminous red galaxies. They can be found both in the central areas of clusters as well as in the outskirts, some of them have large peculiar velocities. About 1/3 of red galaxies in clusters are spirals. The scatter of colours of red ellipticals is in most clusters larger than that of red spirals. The presence of substructure in rich clusters, signs of possible mergers and infall, as well as the large peculiar velocities of the first ranked galaxies suggest that the clusters in our sample are not yet virialized. We present merger trees of dark matter haloes in an N-body simulation to demonstrate the formation of present-day dark matter haloes via multiple mergers during their evolution. Dark energy is one of the fundamental features of the modern cosmology. We use dark matter cosmological simulations to search for local group type systems and study the motions of halos. In simulations we see signinificant variations of motions for the infalling galaxies, but beyond some distance the galaxies follow the Hubble flow.

For the first time spectroscopic galaxy redshift surveys are reaching the scales where galaxies can be studied together with the nearest quasars. This gives an opportunity to study the dependence between the activity of a quasar and its environment in a more extensive way than before. We study the spatial distribution of galaxies and groups of galaxies in the environments of low redshift quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our aim is to understand how the nearby quasars are embedded in the local and global density field of galaxies and how the environment affects quasar activity. We analyse the environments of nearby quasars using number counts of galaxies. We also study the dependence of group properties to their distance to the nearest quasar. The large scale environments are studied by analysing the locations of quasars in the luminosity density field. Our study of the number counts of galaxies in quasar environments shows an underdensity of bright galaxies at a few Mpc from quasars. Also, the groups of galaxies that have a quasar closer than 2Mpc are poorer and less luminous than in average. Our analysis on the luminosity density field shows that quasars clearly avoid rich superclusters. Nearby quasars seem to be located in outskirts of superclusters or in filaments connecting them. Our results suggest that quasar evolution may be affected by density variations both on supercluster scales and in the local environment., Comment: Accepted to A&A

Measurements of clustering in large-scale imaging surveys that make use of photometric redshifts depend on the uncertainties in the redshift determination. We have used light-cone simulations to show how the deprojection method successfully recovers the real space correlation function when applied to mock photometric redshift surveys. We study how the errors in the redshift determination affect the quality of the recovered two-point correlation function. Considering the expected errors associated to the planned photometric redshift surveys, we conclude that this method provides information on the clustering of matter useful for the estimation of cosmological parameters that depend on the large scale distribution of galaxies., 11 pages, 8 figures. In this paper we carry out a quantitative analysis of the three-body systems and map them as a function of decaying time and intial conguration, look at this problem as an example of a simple deterministic system, and ask to what extent the orbits are really predictable. We have investigated the behavior of about 200 000 general Newtonian three body systems using the simplest initial conditions. Within our resolution these cover all the possible states where the objects are initially at rest and have no angular momentum. We have determined the decay time-scales of the triple systems and show that the distribution of this parameter is fractal in appearance. Some areas that appear stable on large scales exhibit very narrow strips of instability and the overall pattern, dominated by resonances, reminds us of a traditional Maasai warrior shield. Also an attempt is made to recover the original starting conguration of the three bodies by backward integration. We find there are instances where the evolution to the future and to the past lead to different orbits, in spite of time symmetric initial conditions. We study the distribution, masses, and dynamical properties of galaxy groups in the A2142 supercluster. We analyse the global luminosity density distribution in the supercluster and divide the supercluster into the high-density core and the low-density outskirts regions. We find galaxy groups and filaments in the regions of different global density, calculate their masses and mass-to-light ratios and analyse their dynamical state with several 1D and 3D statistics. We use the spherical collapse model to study the dynamical state of the supercluster. We show that in A2142 supercluster groups and clusters with at least ten member galaxies lie along an almost straight line forming a 50 Mpc/h long main body of the supercluster. The A2142 supercluster has a very high density core surrounded by lower-density outskirt regions. The total estimated mass of the supercluster is M_est = 6.2 10^{15}M_sun. More than a half of groups with at least ten member galaxies in the supercluster lie in the high-density core of the supercluster, centered at the rich X-ray cluster A2142. Most of the galaxy groups in the core region are multimodal. In the outskirts of the supercluster, the number of groups is larger than in the core, and groups are poorer. The orientation of the cluster A2142 axis follows the orientations of its X-ray substructures and radio halo, and is aligned along the supercluster axis. The high-density core of the supercluster with the global density D8 > 17 and perhaps with D8 > 13 may have reached the turnaround radius and started to collapse. A2142 supercluster with luminous, collapsing core and straight body is an unusual object among galaxy superclusters. We have studied the properties of Las Campanas Loose Groups in the neighbourhood of rich (Abell, APM and X-ray) clusters of galaxies. These loose groups show strong evidence of segregation measured in terms of the group richness and the group velocity dispersion: loose groups in the neighbourhood of a rich cluster are typically 2.5 times more massive and 1.6 times more luminous than groups on average, and these loose groups havevelocity dispersions 1.3 times larger than groups on average. This is evidence that the large-scale gravitational field causing the formation of rich clusters enhances the evolution of neighbouring poor systems, a phenomenon recently established in numerical simulations of group and cluster formation., 12 pages, 11 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

The cold dark matter (CDM) scenario generically predicts the existence of triaxial dark matter halos which contain notable amounts of substructure. However, analytical halo models with smooth, spherically symmetric density profiles are routinely adopted in the modelling of light propagation effects through such objects. In this paper, we report the biases introduced by this procedure by comparing the surface mass densities of actual N-body halos against the widely used analytical model suggested by Navarro, Frenk and White (1996) (NFW). We conduct our analysis in the redshift range of 0.0 − 1.5.In cluster sized halos, we find that triaxiality can cause scatter in the surface mass density of the halos up to σ+= +60% and σ−= −70%, where the 1-σ limits are relative to the analytical NFW model given value. Subhalos can increase this scatter to σ+= +70% and σ−= −80%. In galaxy sized halos, the triaxial scatter can be as high as σ+= +80% and σ−= −70%, and with subhalos the values can change to σ+= +40% and σ−= −80%.We have developed an analytical model for the surface mass density scatter as a function of distance to the halo centre, halo redshift and halo mass. The analytical description enables one to investigate the reliability of results obtained with simplified halo models. Additionally, it provides the means to add simulated surface density scatter to analytical density profiles. We have tested our model on the calculation of microlensing optical depths for MACHOs in CDM halos.
