This study showed an overall decrease of cortical gray matter with age but with different rates of volume reduction in different areas, with smaller decrease rates in women than in men. The highest volume reduction rate was observed for the rostral anterior cingulate cortex, an area linked to depression. These findings could serve as a normative reference for clinical conditions that manifest with abnormal brain atrophy.

Here we show that the sample-to-sample turnover of the resting state fMRI blood-oxygen-level-dependent turnover (TBOLD) is heritable, the left and right hemisphere TBOLD heritabilities are highly correlated, and TBOLD heritability varies among cortical areas. Moreover, we documented that TBOLD is associated with the regional cortical distribution of the vesicular acetylcholine transporter.

Previous resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have shown that the strength of local neural interactions decreases with distance. Here, we extend that line of research to evaluate effects of sex and age on local cortical circuitry in six cortical areas (superior frontal, precentral, postcentral, superior parietal, inferior parietal, and lateral occipital) using data acquired from 1,054 healthy young adults who participated in the Human Connectome Project. We confirmed previous findings that the strength of zero-lag correlations between prewhitened, resting-state, blood level oxygenation-dependent (BOLD) fMRI time series decreased with distance locally and documented that the rate of decrease with distance (spatial steepness)

We report on the functional connectivity (FC), its intraclass correlation (ICC), and heritability among 70 areas of the human cerebral cortex. FC was estimated as the Pearson correlation between averaged prewhitened Blood Oxygenation Level-Dependent time series of cortical areas in 988 young adult participants in the Human Connectome Project. Pairs of areas were assigned to three groups, namely homotopic (same area in the two hemispheres), ipsilateral (both areas in the same hemisphere), and heterotopic (nonhomotopic areas in different hemispheres). ICC for each pair of areas was computed for six genetic groups, namely monozygotic (MZ) twins, dizygotic (DZ) twins, singleton siblings of MZ twins (MZsb), singleton siblings of DZ twins (DZsb), non-twin siblings (SB), and unrelated individuals (UNR). With respect to FC, we found the following. (a) Homotopic FC was stronger than ipsilateral and heterotopic FC; (b) average FCs of left and right cortical areas were highly and positively correlated; and (c) FC varied in a systematic fashion along the anterior-posterior and inferior-superior dimensions, such that it increased from anterior to posterior and from inferior to superior. With respect to ICC, we found the following. (a) Homotopic ICC was significantly higher than ipsilateral and heterotopic ICC, but the latter two did not differ significantly from each other; (b) ICC was highest for MZ twins; (c) ICC of DZ twins was significantly lower than that of the MZ twins and higher than that of the three sibling groups (MZsb, DZsb, SB); and (d) ICC was close to zero for UNR. Finally, with respect to heritability, it was highest for homotopic areas, followed by ipsilateral, and heterotopic; however, it did not differ statistically significantly from each other.

The neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are poorly understood. Here we test a proposal that PTSD symptoms reflect fixed, highly correlated neural networks resulting from massive engagement of sensory inputs and the sequential involvement of those projections to limbic areas. Three-tesla functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were acquired at rest in 15 veterans diagnosed with PTSD and 21 healthy control veterans from which zero-lag cross correlations between 50 brain areas (

Separate lines of research have documented brain atrophy and evidence of autoimmune mechanisms in Gulf War Illness (GWI), including the presence of lupus anticoagulant (LAC), in veterans with GWI. Here we evaluated the possible association of LAC and brain volume in veterans with GWI. The presence of LAC was determined using Silica Clotting Time and dilute Russell’s Viper Venom Time assays. MRI data was acquired using a Philips 3T MR scanner from which total gray matter, total cortical gray matter, total subcortical gray matter, and total cerebral white matter were derived. The results demonstrated a statistically significant reduction of brain volume in all regions tested in GWI veterans with positive LAC, as compared to those without LAC. These findings add to the literature implicating autoimmune mechanisms in GWI and point to the presence of prothrombotic antiphospholipid antibodies as contributing to brain atrophy in GWI.

Here we report on the heritability and Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICCs) of brain volumes in 1,103 young healthy adults with mean age 29.2 years. Among them are: 153 monozygotic (MZ) twin pairs and 86 dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs, 133 non-twin siblings of MZ twins, 76 non-twin siblings of DZ twins, 335 siblings, and 81 unrelated individuals. ICCs were calculated between pairs of the following genetic groups: (1) MZ twins; (2) DZ twins; (3) MZ twins—their singleton siblings; (4) DZ twins—their singleton siblings; (5) siblings (SB); and (6) unrelated individuals (NR). We studied 4 brain groups: global, lobar, subcortical, and cortical brain regions. For each of 4 brain groups we found the same order of ICCs ranging from the highest values for MZ twins, statistically significantly smaller for the DZ twins and 3 sibling groups, and practically zero for NR. The DZ twins and 3 sibling groups were not different. No hemispheric difference was found in any genetic group. Among brain groups, the highest heritability was for the global regions, followed by lobar and subcortical groups. Only the cortical brain group heritability was statistically lower than other brain groups. We found less genetic control on the left hemisphere than on the right but no significant difference between hemispheres, and no hemispheric lateralization of heritability for any of the brain groups. These findings document substantial and systematic heritability of global and regional brain volumes.

The Human Connectome Project (HCP) provides a rich dataset of quantitative and domain-specific behavioral measures from twins and extensive family structures. This makes the dataset a unique and a valuable resource to investigate heritability and determine individual differences. Using a set of measures of behavioral domains (motor, emotion, personality, sensory, and cognition), we estimated the intraclass correlations (ICCs) and heritability of 56 behavioral measures for 4 genetically identified groups of participants: monozygotic (MZ) twins, dizygotic (DZ) twins, non-twin siblings (SB), and unrelated individuals (NR). The ICCs range varied among behavioral domains but systematically so among the four genetic groups. We found the same rank order of ICCs, from the highest values for MZ twins, statistically significantly smaller for the DZ twins and sibling group (compared to MZ), and close to zero for NR. The mean heritability values of the five behavioral domains were: cognition h2 = 0.405, emotion h2 = 0.316, motor h2 = 0.138, personality h2 = 0.444, and sensory h2 = 0.193. These domains share overlapping brain networks. The heritability of motor domain was significantly smaller than cognitive, personality, and emotion domains. These findings provide new insight into the effect of genetics on the various diverse behavioral measures.

Blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is frequently used as a proxy for underlying neural activity. Although this is a plausible assumption for experiments where a task is performed, it may not hold to the same degree for conditions of fMRI recording in a task-free, "resting" state where neural synaptic events are weak and, hence, neurovascular coupling and endothelial vascular factors become more prominent (Hillman Annu Rev Neurosci 37:161-181, 2014, 10.1146/annurev-neuro-071013-014111). Here we investigated the magnitude of change of BOLD in consecutive samples over the acquisition time period (turnover of BOLD, "TBOLD") by first-order differencing of single-voxel BOLD time series acquired in 70 areas of the cerebral cortex of 57 cognitively healthy women in a task-free resting state. More specifically, we evaluated (a) the variation of TBOLD among different cortical areas, (b) its dependence on age, and (c) its dependence on the presence (or absence) of the neuroprotective Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) gene DRB1*13 (DRB1*13:02 and DRB1*13:01). We found that TBOLD (a) varied substantially by 2.2 × among cortical areas, being highest in parahippocampal and entorhinal areas and lowest in parietal-occipital areas, (b) was significantly reduced in DRB1*13 carriers across cortical areas (from ~ 15% reduction in orbitofrontal cortex to 2% reduction in cuneus), and (c) increased with age in noncarriers of DRB1*13 but decreased with age in DRB1*13 carriers. These findings document significant dependencies of TBOLD on cortical area location, HLA DRB1*13 and age.

Neural interactions in local cortical networks critically depend on the distance between interacting elements: the shorter the distance, the stronger the interactions. Here we quantified these interactions in six cortical areas of 854 individuals, including monozygotic and dizygotic twins, nontwin siblings, and nonrelated individuals. We found that the strength of zero-lag correlation between prewhitened, resting-state, blood level oxygenation-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging time series decreased with distance as a power law. The rate of decrease, b, varied among individuals by ~1.9×, was highly correlated between hemispheres, but differed among areas (by ~1.2×) in a systematic fashion, becoming progressively less steep from frontal to occipital areas. With respect to twin status, b was significantly correlated between monozygotic twins, less so between dizygotic twins or nontwin siblings, and not at all in nonrelated individuals. These results quantify the lawful, distance-related cortical interactions and demonstrate, for the first time, the heritability of their power law. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Local cortical circuitry involves orderly neuronal interactions. A key feature of these interactions is that they are stronger the closer the interacting neurons. Here we quantified this crucial dependence of neural interactions on distance with functional magnetic resonance imaging and found that the strength of interactions decreases with distance as a power law that is very similar in all cortical lobes and heritable. These findings identify an invariant and heritable property of local cortical organization.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a multisystem disorder that has affected a substantial number of veterans who served in the 1990-1991 Gulf War. The brain is prominently affected, as manifested by the presence of neurological, cognitive and mood symptoms. Although brain dysfunction in GWI has been well documented (EBioMedicine 12:127-32, 2016), abnormalities in brain structure have been debated. Here we report a substantial (~10%) subcortical brain atrophy in GWI comprising mainly the brainstem, cerebellum and thalamus, and, to a lesser extent, basal ganglia, amygdala and diencephalon. The highest atrophy was observed in the brainstem, followed by left cerebellum and right thalamus, then by right cerebellum and left thalamus. These findings indicate graded atrophy of regions anatomically connected through the brainstem via the crossed superior cerebellar peduncle (left cerebellum → right thalamus, right cerebellum → left thalamus). This distribution of atrophy, together with the observed systematic reduction in volume of other subcortical areas (basal ganglia, amygdala and diencephalon), resemble the distribution of atrophy seen in toxic encephalopathy (Am J Neuroradiol 13:747-760, 1992) caused by a variety of substances, including organic solvents. Given the potential exposure of Gulf War veterans to "a wide range of biological and chemical agents including sand, smoke from oil-well fires, paints, solvents, insecticides, petroleum fuels and their combustion products, organophosphate nerve agents, pyridostigmine bromide, …" (Institute of Medicine National Research Council. Gulf War and Health: Volume 1. Depleted uranium, pyridostigmine bromide, sarin, and vaccines. National Academies Press, Washington DC, 2000), it is reasonable to suppose that such exposures, alone or in combination, could underlie the subcortical atrophy observed.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating disorder that can develop following exposure to a traumatic event. Although the cause of PTSD is known, the brain mechanisms of its development remain unknown, especially why it arises in some people but not in others. Most of the research on PTSD has dealt with psychological and brain mechanisms underlying its symptomatology, including intrusive memories, fear and avoidance (see ref.1 for a broad coverage of PTSD research)1. Here we focus, instead, on the origin of PTSD, namely on the neural mechanisms underlying its development. Specifically, we propose a two-hit model for PTSD development, with the following components. (a) The 1st hit is a neuroimmune challenge, as a preexisting condition, and the 2nd hit is intense glutamatergic neurotransmission, induced by the traumatic event; (b) the key molecule that mediates the effects of these two hits is intercellular adhesion molecule 5 (ICAM-5) which was found to be differentially expressed in PTSD2. ICAM-5 is activated by neuroimmune challenge3,4 and glutamatergic neurotransmission5,6, it further enhances glutamatergic transmission6, and exerts a potent effect on synapse formation and neural plasticity, in addition to immunoregulatory functions3,4,7; and (c) with respect to the neural network(s) involved, the brain areas most involved are medial temporal cortical areas, and interconnected cortical and subcortical areas8–10. We hypothesize that the net result of intense glutamatergic transmission in those areas induced by a traumatic event in the presence of ongoing neuroimmune challenge leads to increased levels of ICAM-5 which further enhances glutamatergic transmission and thus leads to a state of a neural network with highly correlated neural interactions, as has been observed in functional neuroimaging studies8–10. We assume that such a “locked-in” network underlies the intrusive re-experiencing in PTSD and maintains associated symptomatology, such as fear and avoidance.

Differences between men and women in brain size, cognitive performance and lateralization of brain activation have been perennial and controversial issues. Here we show that in a motor mental rotation task where women and men performed equally well, the slope of the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signal per degree of mental rotation was overall 2.4x higher in men than in women. This was attributed to the much more inefficient engagement (i.e. higher slopes) of the right hemisphere by men (mainly the frontal lobe). These findings indicate that women process information much more efficiently than men, which could offset smaller brain size.

We investigated the cognitive mechanisms underlying the exploration and decision-making in realistic and novel environments. Twelve human subjects were shown small circular U.S. city maps with two locations highlighted on the circumference, as possible choices for a post office (“targets”). At the beginning of a trial, subjects fixated a spot at the center of the map and ultimately chose one of the two locations. A space syntax analysis of the map paths (from the center to each target) revealed that the chosen location was associated with the less convoluted path, as if subjects navigated mentally the paths in an “ant's way,” i.e., by staying within street boundaries, and ultimately choosing the target that could be reached from the center in the shortest way, and the fewest turns and intersections. The subjects' strategy for map exploration and decision making was investigated by monitoring eye position during the task. This revealed a restricted exploration of the map delimited by the location of the two alternative options and the center of the map. Specifically, subjects explored the areas around the two target options by repeatedly looking at them before deciding which one to choose, presumably implementing an evaluation and decision-making process. The ultimate selection of a specific target was significantly associated with the time spent exploring the area around that target. Finally, an analysis of the sequence of eye fixations revealed that subjects tended to look systematically toward the target ultimately chosen even from the beginning of the trial. This finding indicates an early cognitive selection bias for the ensuing decision process.

The neural mechanisms underlying spatial cognition in the context of exploring realistic city maps are unknown. We conducted a novel brain imaging study to address the question of whether and how features of special importance for map exploration are encoded in the brain to make a spatial decision. Subjects explored by eyes small city maps exemplifying five different street network types in order to locate a hypothetical City Hall, while neural activity was recorded continuously by 248 magnetoencephalography (MEG) sensors at high temporal resolution. Monitoring subjects’ eye positions, we locally characterized the maps by computing three spatial parameters of the areas that were explored. We computed the number of street intersections, the total street length, and the regularity index in the circular areas of 6 degrees of visual angle radius centered on instantaneous eye positions. We tested the hypothesis that neural activity during exploration is associated with the spatial parameters and modulated by street network type. All time series were rendered stationary and nonautocorrelated by applying an autoregressive integrated moving average model and taking the residuals. We then assessed the associations between the prewhitened time-varying MEG time series from 248 sensors and the prewhitened spatial parameters time series, for each street network type, using multiple linear regression analyses. In accord with our hypothesis, ongoing neural activity was strongly associated with the spatial parameters through localized and distributed networks, and neural processing of these parameters depended on the type of street network. Overall, processing of the spatial parameters seems to predominantly involve right frontal and prefrontal areas, but not for all street network layouts. These results are in line with findings from a series of previous studies showing that frontal and prefrontal areas are involved in the processing of spatial information and decision making. Modulation of neural processing of the spatial parameters by street network type suggests that some street network layouts may contain other types of spatial information that subjects use to explore maps and make spatial decisions.

Seven healthy subjects were investigated in cyclic ramp-and-hold long lasting isometric contractions. Wire branched electrodes were used for selective recording of single motor unit (MU) potentials from m. biceps brachii. MU behaviour was defined in terms of recruitment/derecruitment thresholds (RT and DT) and the duration of interspike intervals (ISI). A total of 63 MUs was investigated: 40 units were active from the beginning of the task performance and another 23 were recruited later. There were no changes in the recruitment pattern of MUs with fatigue development — a short first ISI followed by a very long second one and an almost constant firing rate after this transient phase. The tendency of RT to gradually decrease dominates the results. Thus, the required constant rate of force increase with fatigue development was maintained mostly by the mechanisms of space coding (i.e., decrease of RT and recruitment of additional MUs). Oppositely, the time behaviour of the DT changes was not uniform and rate coding was an essential mechanism in the adaptation of MU activity to muscle fatigue during relaxation phases. The recruitment pattern and fatigue related behaviour of the additionally recruited MUs were similar to those of MUs active from the first cycle of the motor task performance.

The purpose of the present investigation is to use surface interference EMG recorded by branched electrodes for assessment of muscle fatigue during sustained voluntary isometric contractions at different levels. Level-trigger averaging and turn/amplitude analysis have been applied. The conduction velocity (CV) of excitation was calculated from the time shift of the negative peaks of the averaged potentials (AvPs) derived from the EMG recorded by two electrodes placed along the muscle fibers. The recruitment of new motor units affects the negative amplitude (NA) of AvPs, the number of turns per second and the mean amplitude of turns in a different way depending on the level of sustained contractions. In contrast, the CV declined at all levels of sustained contractions and was the most appropriate parameter for the muscle fatigue assessment. There was a good correlation between CV decrease and torque reduction during sustained maximal efforts. The level-trigger averaging technique of the interference EMG recorded by surface branched electrodes is easy and non-invasive, thus being very convenient for routine application.

We used hierarchical tree clustering to derive a functional organizational chart of 52 human cortical areas (26 per hemisphere) from zero-lag correlations calculated between single-voxel, prewhitened, resting-state BOLD fMRI time series in 18 subjects. No special resting-state networks were identified. There were four major features in the resulting tree (dendrogram). First, there was a strong clustering of homotopic, left-right hemispheric areas. Second, cortical areas were concatenated in multiple, partially overlapping clusters. Third, the arrangement of the areas revealed a layout that closely resembled the actual layout of the cerebral cortex, namely an orderly progression from anterior to posterior. And fourth, the layout of the cortical areas in the tree conformed to principles of efficient, compact layout of components proposed by Cherniak. Since the tree was derived on the basis of the strength of neural correlations, these results document an orderly relation between functional interactions and layout, i.e. between structure and function.

Early detection of impaired neurological function in neurodegenerative diseases may aid in understanding disease pathogenesis and timing of therapeutic trials.To identify early abnormalities of ocular motor function in individuals who have the spinocerebellar ataxia type 6 (SCA6) gene (CACNA1A) but no clinical symptoms.Physiological techniques were used to record and analyze eye movements and postural sway.Four presymptomatic and 5 ataxic patients with SCA6, genetically identified, and 10 healthy controls.Presymptomatic individuals had normal postural sway but definite ocular motor abnormalities. Two had a low-amplitude horizontal gaze-evoked nystagmus, 1 of whom had a significantly decreased eye velocity for upward saccades and an abnormal frequency of square-wave jerks. Another had abnormal square-wave jerks and a fourth had a reduced gain for pursuit tracking. Not all of the presymptomatic patients had the same findings, but a multivariate analysis discriminated the presymptomatic patients, as a group, from healthy controls and the ataxic patients.Among the earliest functional deficits in SCA6 are eye movement abnormalities, including impaired saccade velocity, saccade metrics, and pursuit gain. This suggests that early functional impairments are caused by cellular dysfunction and/or loss in the posterior cerebellar vermis and flocculus. These findings might help to determine the timing of a treatment and to define variables that could be used as outcome measures for the efficacy of therapeutic trials.

The autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) are a group of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by progressive instability of posture and gait, incoordination, ocular motor dysfunction, and dysarthria due to degeneration of cerebellar and brainstem neurons. Recent studies have established that there are more than 16 genetically distinct subtypes. Clinical observations suggest that eye movements and postural stability are universally but differentially impaired in the SCAs. The aim of the present work was to study the horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) in SCA6 patients to understand the pathophysiology of the VOR due to cerebellar Purkinje cell degeneration. The VOR was recorded in patients with genetically defined SCA6 during rotation in the dark. Severely affected subjects had an intact VOR, but there were quantitative differences in the gain and dynamics compared to normal controls. During angular velocity ramp rotations, there was a reversal in the direction of the VOR that was more pronounced in SCA6 compared to controls. Modeling studies indicate that abnormal feedback of an eye position signal into the velocity storage network can account for this reversal. These and other results will help to identify features that are diagnostic for SCA subtypes and provide new information about selective vulnerability of neurons controlling vestibular reflexes.

Context Although phenotypic heterogeneity in autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) has been explained in part by genotypic heterogeneity, clinical observations suggest the influence of additional factors. Objectives To demonstrate, quantitate, and localize physiologic abnormalities attributable to nongenetic factors in the development of hereditary SCA. Design Quantitative assessments of ocular motor function and postural control in 2 sets of identical twins, one with SCA type 2 and the other with episodic ataxia type 2. Setting University laboratory. Main Outcome Measures Saccadic velocity and amplitude, pursuit gain, and dynamic posturography. Results We found significant differences in saccade velocity, saccade metrics, and postural stability between each monozygotic twin. The differences point to differential involvement between twins of discrete regions in the cerebellum and brainstem. Conclusions These results demonstrate the presence of quantitative differences in the severity, rate of progression, and regional central nervous system involvement in monozygotic twins with SCA that must be owing to the existence of nongermline or external factors.

Action potentials of selected motor units (MUs) from biceps brachii muscle were recorded and analysed at three different elbow angles: 90, 120 and 150 degrees, corresponding to short, control and long muscle length, respectively. Using branched and conventional bipolar wire electrodes, superficial and deep-situated MUs were selectively recorded at relatively equal torques (the torque values were normalized to the corresponding maximal torque for a given muscle length). A total of 138 MUs (74 superficial and 64 deep) were investigated. The mean interspike intervals were significantly shorter at 90 degrees for the majority (52.2%) of the investigated MUs than at the other two angles. This increased discharge rate compensates for the reduction of twitch duration of evoked contraction at short muscle length. The other MUs were divided into three almost equal groups: two with significantly higher discharge rates at 120 and 150 degrees and one with discharge rates unaffected by the joint angle. No significant difference in the discharge rate of superficial and deep MUs at a fixed joint angle was found.

Objectives : A total of 45 motor units (MUs) from the human biceps brachii muscle were investigated during isovelocity concentric and eccentric movements performed by means of a device implementing an external torque in the direction of the extension proportionally to the elbow angle changes. The effects of movement velocity on the recruitment and decruitment thresholds (RT and DT) and the corresponding discharge patterns were determined. Methods : A wire branched electrode placed subcutaneously was used to discriminate the potentials from a single MV. Results : The majority of MUs (91%) were recruited at lower torque values with the increase of movement velocity. The decrease of RT was statistically significant for 47% of the investigated MUs. A typical discharge pattern of short first interspike interval (ISI) followed by a longer one was observed for 93% of all MUs. After the first 2–3 spikes the rate of the MU discharge was approximately constant regardless of the fact that the muscle force gradually increased until the end of the concentric movement. Conclusions : There are differences in the muscle force control during shortening and lengthening contractions. For 82% of the investigated MUs DT was smaller at faster movements and for 21 MUs (47%) the decrease of DT was significant. The gradually declined MU discharge rate throughout the entire movement with a very long last ISI was demonstrated for 93% of the investigated MUs.

Changes accompanying long-lasting intermittent muscle contractions (30%–50% of the maximal) were investigated by tracing the activity of 38 motor units (MU) of the human biceps brachii muscle recorded from fine-wire branched electrodes. The motor task was a continuous repetition of ramp-and-hold cycles of isometric flexion contractions. During ramp-up phases a significant decline in recruitment thresholds was found with no changes in the discharge pattern. During ramp-down phases the unchanged mean value of derecruitment thresholds during the task was accompanied by increased duration of the last two interspike intervals (ISI). These findings would suggest that during fatigue development the main compensatory mechanism during ramp-up contractions is space coding while for ramp-down contractions it is rate coding. During the steady-state phases the mean value of ISI, as well as the firing variability, had increased by the end of the task in most of the MU investigated . In addition 17 recruited MU were also investigated. These units revealed a lower initial discharge rate and a faster decrease in the mean discharge rate with the development of fatigue. The gradual reduction of the recruitment threshold of already active MU and the recruitment of new units demonstrated an increased excitability of the motorneuron pool during fatigue. A typical recruitment pattern (a first short ISI followed by a long one) was observed during ramp-up contractions in units active from the very beginning of the task, as well as during sustained contractions at the onset of the stable discharge of the additionally recruited MU.

We calculated voxel-by-voxel pairwise crosscorrelations between prewhitened resting-state BOLD fMRI time series recorded from 60 cortical areas (30 per hemisphere) in 18 human subjects (nine women and nine men). Altogether, more than a billion-and-a-quarter pairs of BOLD time series were analyzed. For each pair, a crosscorrelogram was computed by calculating 21 crosscorrelations, namely at zero lag ± 10 lags of 2 s duration each. For each crosscorrelogram, in turn, the crosscorrelation with the highest absolute value was found and its sign, value, and lag were retained for further analysis. In addition, the crosscorrelations at zero lag (irrespective of the location of the peak) were also analyzed as a special case. Based on known varying density of anatomical connectivity, we distinguished four general brain groups for which we derived summary statistics of crosscorrelations between voxels within an area (group I), between voxels of paired homotopic areas across the two hemispheres (group II), between voxels of an area and all other voxels in the same (ipsilateral) hemisphere (group III), and voxels of an area and all voxels in the opposite (contralateral) hemisphere (except those in the homotopic area) (group IV). We found the following. (a) Most of the crosscorrelogram peaks occurred at zero lag, followed by ± 1 lag; (b) over all groups, positive crosscorrelations were much more frequent than negative ones; (c) average crosscorrelation was highest for group I, and decreased progressively for groups II-IV; (d) the ratio of positive over negative crosscorrelations was highest for group I and progressively smaller for groups II-IV; (e) the highest proportion of positive crosscorrelations (with respect to all positive ones) was observed at zero lag; and (f) the highest proportion of negative crosscorrelations (with respect to all negative ones) was observed at lag = 2. These findings reveal a systematic pattern of crosscorrelations with respect to their sign, magnitude, lag and brain group, as defined above. Given that these groups were defined along a qualitative gradient of known overall anatomical connectivity, our results suggest that functional interactions between two voxels may simply reflect the density of such anatomical connectivity between the areas to which the voxels belong.
