This study developed the two new indexes, the distance to the nearest cropland (DTNC) of urban residents and the foodshed radius of urban residents (FRUR), to evaluate the potential of China's local food system to sustainably meet urban food needs. The results found that the per-capita DTNC increased by 53% over 1990−2015, with a total increase of 8.2 × 106 km on a national scale; the FRUR estimated on a “business-as-usual” basis was estimated to be 10.1 km. This study further predicted that stress on local food supplies will continue increasing until the 2040s, particularly in mega-urban areas. Appropriate spatial planning regarding the distribution of cropland and urban areas is necessary for mega-urban regions to cope with crisis situations when the external food supply is restricted. Such planning will ultimately ensure the long-term sustainability of urban areas.

Carbonate radical is among the most important environmental relevant reactive species which govern the transformation and fate of pharmaceutical contaminants (PCs). However, reaction rate constants between carbonate radical and most of the PCs have not been experimentally determined, and quantitative structural-activity relationships (QSARs) have not been established for rate estimation. This study applied MaxMin data processing method and used molecular fingerprints (MF) as the input of a deep neural network (DNN) to predict the rate constants between carbonate radical and organic compounds. MF parameters and the hyper-structure of the DNN were adjusted to yield satisfactory accuracy of rate prediction. The vector length of 512 bits with radius of 1 for MF and 5 hidden layers gave the best performance. The optimized MaxMin-MF-DNN model was compared with some of the most commonly used QSARs and machine learning methods, including random data splitting, molecular descriptors, supporting vector machine, decision tree, etc. Results showed that the MF-DNN model out-performed the other methods by more than 10% increase in prediction accuracy. Applying this MF-DNN model, we estimated reaction rates between carbonate radical and pharmaceuticals used in human medicine (1576) and veterinary practice (390). Among them, 46 drugs were identified as fast-reacting compounds, suggesting the important relations of their environmental fate with carbonate radical.

A novel strategy employing urine wastewater derived from source separation technology, to pretreat waste activated sludge (WAS) for promoting yields of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), has been proposed in this study. It was found experimentally that SCFA production could ascend up to 305.4 mg COD/g VSS (volatile suspended solids) with a urine volumetric proportion of 1:2 to the whole reaction system, being 8.8 times that produced in the control. Exploration of the mechanism indicated that WAS disintegration was significantly enhanced due to the synergistic effect of urea and free ammonia (FA). Degradation rates of model organic substrates and measurements of critical enzymatic activities demonstrated that hydrolysis and acidogenesis were inhibited under high urine content (urine proportion of 1:2), while not significantly affected under low urine content (i.e., 1:4), which might be attributed to metal ions existing in urine wastes alleviating the inhibition induced by FA. In contrast, methanogenesis was negatively suppressed by any urine concentration owing to its higher sensitivity to the environmental variations. Shift of microbial population further elucidated the abundance of hydrolytic and acidogenic microbes were enriched in the fermenters with urine addition. The findings provide a new thought for recovering resources from wastes, potentially reducing the pressure of sewage and sludge treatment in wastewater treatment plants.

Soil washing is widely considered as a common method of soil remediation. This study examined the developments in soil washing during the past 20 years via a bibliometric and systematic critical review. Different washing agents (inorganic and organic chelating agents and surfactants) exhibit different effects and mechanisms under varying conditions. Most previous research has involved only laboratory-scale studies; however, pilot field studies are more relevant to actual conditions and soil characteristics. Soil factors include physical and chemical properties, coexisting ion species content, and heavy metals and their forms in the soil. Washing conditions include type of leaching agent, concentration, pH, time, and solid–liquid ratio. Combinations of remediation techniques, such as advanced oxidation, electric remediation, and phytoremediation, can avoid many disadvantages of using only soil washing. In future soil washing studies, focus must be placed on developing environmentally friendly washing agents, optimizing washing conditions while reducing economic costs and preventing destruction of the function of the soil, problems associated with complex pollution, and the entire soil–ground environment to avoid groundwater pollution. This study expects for relevant research directions and provides guidance for future research.

As the first step of methylmercury (MeHg) entry into the aquatic food webs, MeHg uptake by phytoplankton is crucial in determining the final human MeHg exposure risks. MeHg availability to plankton is regulated by dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the water, while the extent of the impacts can vary largely based on the sources of DOM. Here, we investigated impacts of DOM sources on MeHg bioconcentration by three freshwater phytoplankton species (i.e. S. quadricauda, Chlorella sp., Microcystis elabens) in the laboratory system. We found that algae-derived DOM would prohibited the cellular MeHg bioconcentration by a percent up to 77-93%, while the soil-derived DOM didn't show similar inhibition effects. DOM characterization by the excitation‒emission matrices, Fourier transform infrared spectrum, ultra‒high performance liquid chromatography‒tandem quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry shown that the molecular size of S-containing compound, rather than thiol concentration, has played a crucial role in regulating the MeHg uptake by phytoplankton. Climate change and increasing nutrient loadings from human activities may affect plankton growth in the freshwater, ultimately changing the DOM compositions. Impacts of these changes on cellular MeHg uptakes by phytoplankton should be emphasized when exploring the aquatic Hg cycling and evaluating their risks to human beings and wild life.

"Clean water and sanitation" is one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. One primary objective of wastewater treatment is to remove contaminants such as pathogens, nutrient, and organic matter from wastewater, while not all contaminants could be removed effectively. Wastewater treatment plants would inevitably represent concentrated point sources of residual contaminant loadings into surface waters. This study focuses on the populated Yangtze River Basin where emerging contaminants are frequently detected in the rivers in the recent years. A python-based ArcGIS model is developed to estimate the contributions of effluent discharges in water supply sources and quantify fate and environmental risks of human-derived contaminants in the river network. We find that one-third of the river networks are potentially influenced by the effluents through local or upstream inputs. Average fraction of unintended wastewater reuse in water supply intakes is estimated to be lower than 3% under the average flow scenario with an average traveling time of 0.05 day from the nearest effluent input site to water supply intakes. However, under low flow scenario, the percentage of effluent discharge would increase largely, leading to substantial increases in human health and ecological risks. This study provides a systematic investigation to understand extents of impacts of effluent inputs in river networks as well as identify the opportunities to improve the water management in the densely populated regions.

Wastewater treatment is an important step for pollutant reduction and the promotion of water environment quality. The complexity of natural conditions, influent shock, and wastewater treatment technology result in uncertainty and variation in the wastewater treatment system. These uncertainties result in fluctuations in effluent water quality and operation costs, as well as the environmental risk of receiving waters. Artificial intelligence has become a powerful tool for minimizing the complexities and complications in wastewater treatment. In this study, we examine the literature from 1995 to 2019 to conduct a large-scale bibliometric analysis of trends in the application of artificial intelligence technology to wastewater treatment. Furthermore, we present a systematic review of four aspects of the application of artificial intelligence to wastewater treatment: technology, economy, management, and wastewater reuse. Finally, we provide perspectives on the potential future directions of new research frontiers in the utilization of artificial intelligence in wastewater treatment plants that simultaneously address pollutant removal, cost reduction, water reuse, and management challenges in complex practical applications.

The regional distribution of antibiotic resistance genes has been caused by the use and preference of antibiotics. Not only environmental factors, but also the population movement associated with transportation development might have had a great impact, but yet less is known regarding this issue. This research study has investigated and reported that the high-speed railway train was a possible mobile reservoir of bacteria with antibiotic resistance, based on the occurrence, diversity, and abundance of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB), antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and mobile gene elements (MGEs) in untreated train wastewater. High-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing analyses have indicated that opportunistic pathogens like Pseudomonas and Enterococcuss were the predominant bacteria in all samples, especially in cultivable multi-antibiotic resistant bacteria. The further isolated Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium exhibited multi-antibiotic resistance ability, potentially being an indicator for disinfection proficiency. Positive correlations amongst ARGs and MGEs were observed, such as between intI1 and tetW, tetA, blaTEM, among Tn916/154 and mefA/F, qnrS, implying a broad dissemination of multi-ARGs during transportation. The study findings suggested that the high-speed railway train wastewater encompassed highly abundant antibiotic-resistant pathogens, and the wastewater discharge without effective treatment may pose severe hazards to human health and ecosystem safety.

Agricultural application contributes major consumption of antibiotics worldwide. As veterinary antibiotics are poorly metabolized by animals, most of them end up in agricultural waste, which is increasingly subject to thermal treatment, such as torrefaction, pyrolysis, etc. However, there is a lack of research on their thermal decomposition mechanisms and products elucidation. Therefore, this study investigated the thermal decomposition of four major veterinary antibiotics groups (β-lactams, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, sulfonamides) with emphasis on their thermal stability, structural transformation and antibacterial activity. Owing to their widespread application and use, microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics coexist in the sewage treatment systems. In this study, the effects and mechanisms of the combined stress of MPs and ciprofloxacin (CIP) on phosphorus removal by phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) were investigated. This study found that the four types of MPs and CIP exhibited different antagonistic effects on the inhibition of phosphorus removal by PAO. MPs reduced the effective concentration of CIP through adsorption and thus reduced its toxicity, which was affected by the biofilms on MPs. In addition, CIP may cause PAO to produce more extracellular polymeric substances, which reduces the physical and oxidative stress of MPs on PAO. Our results are helpful as they increase the understanding of the effects of complex emerging pollutants in sewage systems and propose measures to strengthen the biological phosphorus removal in sewage treatment processes.

Halobenzoquinones (HBQs) are highly toxic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and are also precursors of other DBPs such as trihalomethanes (THMs). The formation of THMs from HBQs during chlorine-only and UV/chlorine processes with or without bromide was investigated experimentally. Density functional theory (DFT) reactivity descriptors were also applied to predict the nucleophilic/electrophilic reactive sites on HBQs and intermediates. The results were combined to explain the different behaviors of 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (2,6-DCBQ) and tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (TCBQ) and to propose mechanism for the promoting roles of UV and hydroxylation of HBQs in THMs formation. Under UV/chlorine, UV significantly enhanced THMs formation from 2,6-DCBQ compared to chlorine-only, mainly due to the production of OH-DCBQ*. Excited 2,6-DCBQ* by UV benefited nucleophilic hydrolysis to produce OH-DCBQ*, which favored electrophilic attack by chlorine, thereby inducing more THMs formation. UV/chlorine modestly promoted THMs formation from TCBQ compared to chlorine-only. Hydroxylation of TCBQ and UV irradiation were both important in promoting THMs formation due to the high electrophilic property of OH-TCBQ and TCBQ*. Meanwhile, hydroxylation of HBQs and CHCl3 formation were enhanced at higher pH. This work suggested that enhanced formation of THMs from HBQs should be considered in the application of combined UV and chlorine processes.

Nutrient dynamics in lakes are determined by the external anthropogenic discharges and unobserved internal cycling processes. In this work, a decadal nutrient data set from the eutrophic Lake Taihu, China, revealed a strong seasonal pattern of nutrient concentration and limitation. A nutrient-driven dynamic eutrophication model based on a Bayesian hierarchical framework was established to quantify the relative contributions to temporal variations from external discharges and internal processes. Results showed that after years of efforts on nutrient reduction, external discharges were relatively small and fluctuated less between seasons compared to the internal processes. A quantitative relationship between monthly nutrient concentration and corresponding internal loading was observed. Lake sediment could transform from a source of phosphorus in overlying water in summer and autumn to a sink in winter and spring. Together with temporal variations in nitrification and denitrification, seasonal transformation from the limitation of phosphorus induced colimitation of nitrogen and phosphorus. Understanding the potential impact of internal nutrient cycling on a seasonal pattern of nutrient concentration and limitation, the growth of phytoplankton, and, possibly, phytoplankton community composition should be emphasized, given the change in the relative importance of external discharges and internal loading in the process of lake restoration.

While aqueous free Cu(II) ion is known to be ineffective to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS), here we report for the first time that Cu(II) complexes are potentially effective activators for PDS when the coordination involves suitable ligands. Using cefalexin (CFX) as a representative, studies show that the complex of Cu(II) with CFX can efficiently activate PDS to induce rapid degradation of CFX. Transformation products of CFX by PDS/Cu(II) differ substantially from those generated from the typical radical oxidation process, for example, PDS/Ag(I), but quite resemble the products from oxidation of CFX by Cu(III). Complexation with CFX increases the electron density of Cu(II), favoring electron transfer from Cu(II) to PDS to generate radicals and Cu(III). The produced Cu(III), rather than radicals, plays the primary role in the overall CFX degradation and regenerates Cu(II) in a catalytic cycle. This novel activation process can occur for a wide range of contaminants (cephalosporin, penicillin, and tetracycline antibiotics) and ligands when coordinated with Cu(II), and N-containing functional groups (e.g. amines) were found to form effective Cu(II) complexes for PDS activation. The new findings of this study further broaden the knowledge on PDS activation by aqueous Cu(II), and verify the contribution of Cu(III) to contaminant elimination.

Phosphate recovery from wastewater is regarded as promising strategy to achieve sustainable supply of non-renewable natural resources. In this study, a novel technique for spherical materials preparation was developed to achieve both phosphate recovery and antibiotic removal from urine. Phosphate removal and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation performance of the synthesized spherical materials was studied in synthesized urine and real urine. MgB, made from magnesium oxide (10%) and biochar (10%), was the most effective in phosphate removal and SMX degradation. Struvite formation and radical production were the mechanisms of phosphate removal and SMX degradation, respectively. The phosphate removal capacity of MgB was 0.181 g/g and the removal cost was around 0.245 RMB/g phosphate. Meanwhile, the combination of MgB and persulfate could achieve a 98% degradation efficiency of SMX, which could eliminate the hazardous impurity in final product. Furthermore, this technique has also been validated useful in treating real hydrolyzed urine.

A novel pretreatment technique (i.e., using Sodium percarbonate, SPC) to improve the short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) production waste activated sludge (WAS) was proposed in this study. Results indicated that the maximum SCFA production of 1605.7 mg COD/L and acetic acid of 52.9% were attained at 0.2 g SPC/g TSS, being 8.4 and 2.8 times of the control (191.3 mg COD/L and 19%), respectively. Meanwhile, the optimal time for SCFA accumulation was decreased from 6d (control) to 4d (0.2 g/g TSS). Calcium peroxide (CaO2) has been proven to oxidize various organic pollutants when they exist as a single class of compounds. However, there is a lack of research on the potential of unactivated CaO2 to treat mixed chlorinated organic pollutants in soils. This study examined the potential of CaO2 in treating soils co-contaminated with p-dichlorobenzene (p-DCB) and p-chloromethane cresol (PCMC). The effects of CaO2 dosage and treatment duration on the rate of degradation were investigated. Furthermore, the collateral effects of the treatment on treated soil characteristics were studied. The result showed that unactivated CaO2 could oxidize mixed chlorinated organic compounds in wet soils. More than 69% of the pollutants in the wet soil were mineralized following 21 days of treatment with 3% (w/w) CaO2. The hydroxyl radicals played a significant role in the degradation process among the other decomposition products of hydrogen peroxide. Following the oxidation process, the treated soil pH was increased due to the formation of calcium hydroxide. Soil organic matter, cation exchange capacity, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, and certain soil enzyme activities of the treated soil were decreased. However, the collateral effects of the system on electrical conductivity, available phosphorus, and particle size distribution of the treated soil were not significant. Likewise, since no significant release of heavy metals was seen in the treated soil matrix, the likelihood of metal ions as co-pollutants after treatment was low. Therefore, CaO2 can be a better alternative for treating industrial sites co-contaminated with chlorinated organic compounds.

Sulfonamides (SAs) are among the most widely used antibiotics to treat bacterial infections for humans and animals. They are also used in livestock agriculture to improve growth and feed efficiency in many countries. Recent years, there is a growing concern about the environmental fate and treatment technologies of SAs, in order to eliminate their potential impact on the ecosystem and human health. Additionally, SAs are frequently used as model compounds to evaluate the performance of newly developed advanced water treatment processes. Hence, understanding the chemical reaction features of SAs can provide valuable information for further technological development. In this review, the reaction kinetics, abiotic transformations and corresponding ecotoxicity changes of SAs in natural environments and water treatment processes were comprehensively analyzed to draw critical suggestion and new insights. The •OH-based AOP is proposed as an effective method for the elimination of SAs toxicity, although it is susceptible to water constituent due to low selectivity. The application of biochar or metal-based oxidants in AOPs is becoming a future trend for SA treatment. Overall, this review would provide useful information for the development of advanced water treatment technologies and the control of ecological risks related to SAs.

N-Nitrosamines, well-known human carcinogens, are widely considered to be formed through the disinfection of waters containing compounds with amine moieties. The formation mechanisms of nitrosamines during the disinfection of drinking water and wastewater have been previously reviewed in the literature. However, no study to date has reviewed the effects of inorganic ions on nitrosamines formation during disinfection. Inorganic ions are ubiquitous in the environment and are present at significant concentrations in water and wastewater. Their presence influences aqueous nitrosamines formation, depending on the type, concentration, and environmental conditions. In this review, we have critically reviewed nitrosamines’ precursors and occurrence, disinfection processes associated with nitrosamines’ formation/destruction, and the impact of inorganic ions on the formation or removal of nitrosamines during disinfection of water and wastewater. The disinfectants reviewed in the study were chlorine, chloramine, chlorine dioxide, ozone, and radicals generated through advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). N-Nitrosodimethylamine formation pathways, in the presence and absence of inorganic ions, were also reviewed to summarize our current understanding. Although chloramination has been associated with the formation of nitrosamines, many ozonation studies have also shown significant levels of nitrosamines formation. Pre-oxidation and AOPs have been reported as the most promising mitigation strategies for controlling nitrosamines formation, requiring prolonged exposure of precursors for effective mineralization.

The advanced oxidation process (AOP) based on activated Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) has been attracting many people in the field of soil and water remediation in many ways while ignoring the shortcomings. The high cost of activators, and energy input, as well as the expense to separate the catalyst and transition metal reducing agent from the treated soil, were some disadvantages of using activated PMS. Based on the above rationales of problems related to the use of activated PMS, this study aimed to study the performance of using unactivated peroxymonosulfate for the advanced oxidation process to remediate soil contaminated by trichloroethylene (TCE), and to evaluate the synergistic effect on selected soil properties after treatment. The results showed that within 45 min, a single injection of 5 mM PMS at its initial pH value can degrade 86.90% of the total TCE in the soil. However, when PMS was continuously injected, the removal rate was increased to 95.25%. The direct reaction of TCE and PMS was the main cause of degradation. PMS can degrade TCE in a wide pH range (pH 3–11), but the maximum degradation was at pH = 2.9 (the initial pH of PMS). After the treatment, the soil organic matter (SOM) was degraded significantly. In contrast, FTIR, SEM, and hydrometer tests conducted on the soil showed that the treatment had no significant effect on the functional groups and particle size distribution of the treated soil. The study on the effect of the treatment on the concentration of bioavailable heavy metals in the treated soil showed that only manganese and copper metals were significantly increased after the treatment. According to the results obtained in this study, it is more beneficial and feasible to use unactivated peroxymonosulfate in the advanced oxidation process when remediating soil contaminated by chlorinated organic matter.

UV-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) via photolysis of precursor chemical oxidants have been of interest to numerous researchers over the past several decades due to their capacity to generate highly active radical species and interesting radical chemistry. However, applications of UV-based AOPs have been commonly optimized case by case, due to the lack of theoretical investigations on process optimization, especially on oxidant doses. In this study, a simple equation for UV/H2O2 (•OH as the sole primary reactive species (PRS)) to obtain the theoretical optimal concentration (Copt-theoretical) for H2O2 was derived (Copt-theoretical = A b · S c e · k ). The equation was then validated for its accuracy in the calculation of Copt-theoretical for H2O2 in the UV/H2O2 AOP using a well-established comprehensive kinetic model. A competition kinetics method for the measurement of scavenging capacity (Sc, the unknown parameter for the simple equation) was designed, for which nitrobenzene was employed as the probe compound and tert‑butyl alcohol was introduced as the standard compound. Based on this simple equation, we calculated the Copt-theoretical of 77 environmental water samples and introduced the concept of a practical optimal oxidants dose for the UV/H2O2 AOP, while minimizing the operation costs in engineering applications. Moreover, this study mathematically proved that the simple equation obtained from UV/H2O2 could be successfully extended to other UV-based AOPs, including UV/chlorine, UV/NH2Cl, UV/S2O82−, and UV/peracetic acid. The simple equation of Copt-theoretical derived in this study may not only help to provide instructions for engineering applications, but also point out the ultimate treatment capability of each UV-based AOPs.

In this study, goethiete (α-FeOOH) -biochar (BC) composites were successfully developed from a co-precipitation reaction under alkaline conditions (pH = 11.93) and used as the adsorbent for phosphate recovery from urine. The morphology and crystallinity of α-FeOOH-BC composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. α-FeOOH loaded BC was found to be amorphous. This may be caused by the Si residue in BC. The Elovich model and the Langmuir model fit better to the kinetic and isotherm results of α-FeOOH-600BC, respectively, indicating that phosphate adsorption is mainly a chemisorption and monolayer adsorption process. The α-FeOOH-600BC with amorphous structure showed higher adsorption capacity than crystalline α-FeOOH, and the maximum phosphate sorption capacity reached 57.39 mg g−1. Additionally, the extractable phosphate of this material was approximately 967.5 mg P·kg−1 suggesting the α-FeOOH-600BC after adsorption could be a promising alternative as a slow-phosphate-release fertilizer. Fourier-transform infrared and X-ray induced photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that the active sites of the adsorption of phosphate were the Fe-OH bonds that formed inner-sphere complexes (Fe-O-P).

Biochar (BC)-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI-BC) was investigated as a heterogeneous Fenton-like activator to degrade the antibiotic ornidazole (ONZ). The characterization of nZVI-BC indicated that BC could enhance the adsorption of ONZ and reduce the aggregation of nZVI. Thus, nZVI-BC had a higher removal efficiency (80.1%) than nZVI and BC. The effects of parameters such as the nZVI/BC mass ratio, pH, H2O2 concentration, nZVI-BC dose, and temperature were systematically investigated, and the removal of ONZ followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Finally, possible pathways of ONZ in the oxidation process were proposed. The removal mechanism included the adsorption of ONZ onto the surface of nZVI-BC, the generation of &bull, OH by the reaction of nZVI with H2O2, and the oxidation of ONZ. Recycling experiments indicated that the nZVI-BC/H2O2 system is a promising alternative for the treatment of wastewater containing ONZ.
