1. Support for Mobile Collaborative Learning Applications

Abstract

This work is intended to describe a framework aimed to address the challenges in the development of mobile Collaborative Learning applications. Firstly, the paper offers an overview of some of the main principles of Collaborative Learning that will be the basis of the framework, which is based on three main pillars: collaboration and communication among students; context-awareness (gathering users' data, such as geo-location, movements, academic information, and history) to provide personalize information and services; and interoperability with e-learning as many organizations use them. Evaluation will be conducted with a group of students of a "Professional Expert Course on Mobile Programming" that will use the framework to build their applications.

Abstract

The study of the stability of frequency sources is a matter of major interest due to the evolution of communication and instrumentation systems resulting in increasing the number of channels in a limited spectrum, and reducing size and power consumption. The paper relates laboratory experiences that explain the behavior versus temperature of thickness-mode quartz crystal resonators (AT- and SC-cut crystals) that are applied to the control of frequency sources, and the performance of digital compensation techniques. Prototypes of Microcomputer-Compensated Crystal Oscillators (MCXO's) have been developed to compare the compensation performance using the resonator as the temperature sensor against the use of an external sensor and verify the reduction of compensation errors due to thermal lags and hysteresis. The design of a CMOS integrated circuit for the MCXO is also included. A frequency correction method that does not modify the crystal resonance has been implemented in the circuit. This allows sensing the temperature by means of the crystal and improving its long-term stability (aging). A new frequency comparator is also introduced. Its aim is to obtain the difference between two very close frequencies at its output, without being affected by the phase variations that the new frequency correction method and the digital circuit introduce. This detector has been implemented to get a high-resolution thermometric frequency and to realize a frequency-locked loop that includes a crystal controlled local oscillator, allowing the use of the MCXO as good short-term stability source.

Abstract

Location tracking systems are becoming more relevant in many new environments, due to the fact they the core of context aware applications. This new concept can improve the way universities provide services and a wide number of companies do business. Inside university area, users location (both students, teachers and staff) gives rise to a new kind of services based on their profile and on the area in which the user is in each moment, allowing a personalization of the offered contents. The present paper shows how location-based applications can be developed for mobile devices through a middleware that allows different location methods, such as Wi-Fi and RFID. Finally some location-based applications are given showing possible examples in different environments.

Abstract

It is our belief that advances in mobile and communication technologies provide a means of driving pedagogical change in traditional educational systems. A prime emerging advantage of these technologies lies in context-aware learning applications which contextualize acquired knowledge and act according to users’ educational and personal circumstances, technologically scaffolding both in-class and out-of-class learning experiences [1]. Mobile devices are becoming increasingly ubiquitous essential companions in our daily endeavours, and integrate various sensors (e.g. GPS, camera, motion sensors). Furthermore, these devices are well connected due to the proliferation of mobile broadband connections [2]. Collaborative learning has become an indicator of educational change, in line with the influence of Social Constructivist learning theory [3]. School and university curricula are being changed to seamlessly embedded collaborative activities into existing classrooms, therefore creating not only novel classroom organization, but systematically changing the classroom culture [3]. As this process progresses, we witness implementations in all subject areas ranging from mathematics to biology, electronics, to history, both in primary and secondary schools, as well as at universities.

Abstract

This paper reports on a state-of-the-art remote laboratory project called Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality (VISIR). VISIR allows wiring and measuring of electronic circuits remotely on a virtual workbench that replicates physical circuit breadboards. The wiring mechanism is developed by means of a relay switching matrix connected to a PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation (PXI) instrumentation platform. The entire equipment is controlled by LabVIEW server software, in addition to a measurement server software that protects the equipment from hazard connections by verifying input circuit designs, sent by students, before being executed. This paper addresses other approaches such as remote labs based on Data Acquisition Cards (DAQs), NetLab, and RemotElectLab, comparing them with VISIR in order to emphasize its singularity. Topics discussed are as follows: the technical description, software, operation cycle, features, and provided services. In addition, the feedback received by students at several universities and the encountered drawbacks along with the proposed solutions are highlighted. The paper finally addresses the ongoing and future challenges within the VISIR community including its integration with Learning Management Systems (LMSs) and iLab Shared Architecture (ISA), its new hardware version release that is based on LAN eXtensions for Instrumentation (LXI), and its new open platform version that supports federated access.

Abstract

Demands and needs of labor markets have always been seldom concerned by providers of educational programs. Most of the educational curricula revolve around the theoretical concepts and their evolution without contemplating their purpose of deployments and application. This is common in most of the engineering curricula and the applied science. In this contribution, we present a new European project, Remote-labs Access in Internet-based Performance-Centered Learning Environment for Curriculum Support (RIPLECS) that aims to mitigate these issues by providing an official inter-institutional European master degree program in Information and Communication System (ICS). In order to globalize the master and to, at least, guarantee its accordance with the European education requirements, the program is conducted online across five European institutions and is oriented to labor market needs for qualified graduates, with special focus on realizing real world experiments in each subject remotely, which tackle many geographical and time constrains. The network architecture of RIPLECS platform enables world-wide distribution of learning resources by utilizing multiple Web servers at several European universities, within a single network topology. Abstract

It is of crucial importance the integration of practical sessions in engineering curricula owing to their significant role in understanding engineering concepts and scientific phenomena. However, the lack of practical sessions due to the high costs of the equipment and the unavailability of instructors has caused a significant declination in experimentation in engineering education. Remote laboratories have tackled this issues providing online reusable and shared workbenches unconstrained by neither geographical nor time considerations. Thereby, they have extremely proliferated among universities and integrated into engineering curricula over the last decade. This contribution compiles diverse experiences based on the deployment of the remote laboratory, Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality (VISIR), on the practices of undergraduate engineering grades at various universities within the VISIR community. It aims to show the impact of its usage on engineering education concerning the assessments of students and teachers as well. Abstract

This paper presents M2Learn framework as an open platform, which facilitates the development of mobile learning and ubiquitous applications. The main features of this framework are: (a) transparent management of multiple location-based technologies including GPS and cell towers ; (b) identification of objects through RFID ; (c) support for motion sensors (e.g., G-Sensor) ; (d) interoperability with Moodle e-learning platform ; and (e) support for widely accepted e-learning standards, including LOM for learning objects, and IMS-QTI for assessment. To demonstrate the benefits of the M2Learn system, a MobileTwitter microblogging application had been developed. The benefits of the application relying on the M2Learn’s infrastructure are discussed and experience in designing the system presented.
