Abstract

La inoculación de hongos saprobios principalmente Trichoderma harzianum podrían ser utilizados como parte de una estrategia en la restauración de suelos con una alta contaminación en metales pesados, debido a su capacidad para aumentar la actividad biológica del suelo y disminuir la concentración de plomo y arsénico. Teniendo en cuenta las características físico químicas del suelo estudiado (pH inferior a 4 y conductividad inferior a 3.5 mS) se piensa que es necesario realizar la inoculación de estos microrganismos con la adición de alguna enmienda que incrementen las condiciones nutricionales necesarias para el crecimiento de la planta modelo.

Abstract

The risk assessment of pollution associated with metal extraction process is a social responsibility. The initial goal of this type of assessment should be the use of a methodology able to combine the use of easy application, low cost and high efficiency-techniques to provide the necessary information with the least amount of investment in time and money as possible. A suitable option maybe a combination of a simple, quick and reliable analytical technique such as PXRF with bioassays and chemometric tools like HCA, PCA or LDA as a viable approach to carrying out a preliminary estimation of phytotoxicity levels associated to the soil sampled in a metal-contaminated area. The method we propose has been shown to be a quick, economical and reliable tool for use in the first stages of environmental risk characterization in mining areas. Particularly, the use of root elongation (RE) as the classification criteria provides a viable approach for selecting the final samples (or zones) in which an “in-depth” investigation plan will be designed as part of a future remediation strategy.

20. Effectiveness of ecotoxicological tests in relation to physicochemical properties of Zn and Cu polluted Mediterranean soils

Abstract

Zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) are essential elements for living organisms, but they are also among the most frequent soils pollutants. Toxicity of these elements is difficult to assess and often shows contradictory results among authors due to the great complexity of the interactions with soil properties and constituents. The study of the individual metal behaviour will help provide a complete overview of the metal patterns in field pollution processes. Here, the influence of different soil properties on the mobility of Zn and Cu is studied in laboratory spiked soil samples by assessing metal toxicity from three different toxicity tests: root elongation, heterotrophic soil respiration and Microtox® toxicity tests. The results indicate that toxicity is significantly correlated with soil properties, calcium carbonate and organic carbon being the variables with highest influence in the reduction of Zn and Cu toxicity. However, large differences among soil samples in the toxicity results are observed. Thus, endpoints measured differ strongly in each soil sample because of the different sensibility of the organisms used in the toxicity tests and the high variability in soil properties. In addition, the results indicate differences between the soil toxicity depending on whether total or bioavailable metal concentrations are taken into account. Therefore, the current threshold concentrations usually selected for determining soil toxicity are not realistic, and a new approach is necessary taking into account the soil properties and the metal availability as well as using different toxicity tests to assess the toxic risk of metal-polluted soils

23. Land degradation and sand dynamics in a steppe region (Nâama, south-western Algeria)

Abstract

Land degradation is one of the most important environmental threats facing the international community. In North Africa, many semiarid and arid regions are suffering significant land degradation, which can be an impediment to sustainable development. Therefore; land degradation is monitored in a regional context for a better understanding of its causes and consequences. One of the main consequences is a notable increase in sand encroachment with negative environmental implications. For this reason, the dynamics of sands between south-eastern Morocco and the wilaya of Nâama, south-western Algeria, was studied. Sand samples gathered from six distinctive areas were subjected to physicochemical, colorimetric (redness index), morphoscopic (circularity), and geochemical analysis, and studied statistically using an analysis of variance (ANOVA), wind direction data, ternary plots and a hierarchical cluster of trace elements (K, Rb, Fe, Ti, Ca and Sr). In all areas, a clear dominance of the sand fraction appeared showing percentages ranging from 89 to 96%. Sampled areas were all carbonated, and the pH was alkaline, with close values ranging from 8.4 to 9. The mean circularity values ranged from 0.67 in Merzouga (Morocco) to 0.80 in El Aguer (Algeria). The lowest value of the redness index was noted in Merzouga with a mean value of 4. The Algerian areas showed an almost similar redness index with a value of 6 but the highest value was noted in Saadana with a value of 11. Geochemical approaches, based on ternary plots and dendrogram cluster indicating the abundance of major elements (Fe, Ca and K), were used as indicators of wind transport. Results suggested the existence of a Regional Wind Action System (RWAS) implicated in the transport of sand from south-eastern Morocco and its redistribution towards south-western Algeria. Merzouga was connected to all areas but particularly to nearby Saadana and Kasdir in the Algerian territory., A degradação do solo é uma das maiores ameaças ambientais que a comunidade internacional enfrenta. No norte da África, várias regiões áridas e semi-áridas são submetidas a processos de degradação que impedem o seu desenvolvimento sustentável. Assim, a degradação do solo é monitorizada em um contexto regional para melhor entender as suas causas e consequências. Uma das principais consequências é o aumento notável da invasão por areias com implicações ambientais negativas. Por esta razão, neste trabalho é estudada a dinâmica da areia entre o sudeste de Marrocos e Wilaya Nâama, sudoeste da Argélia. Amostras de areia colhidas em seis áreas distintas foram sujeitas a análises físico-químicas, colorimétricas (índice de rubefacção), morfoscópicas (circularidade) e geoquímicas. Os resultados foram interpretados usando análise de variância (ANOVA), dados da direção do vento, diagramas ternários e um conjunto hierárquico de concentrações de elementos (K, Rb, Fe, Ti, Ca e Sr). Uma clara dominância da fração areia ocorre em todas as áreas de estudo com uma concentração de 89 a 96%. Todas as amostras eram carbonatadas, com valores de pH entre 8,4 e 9. Os valores médios da circularidade morfológica variaram entre 0,67 em Merzouga (Marrocos) e 0,80 em El Aguer (Argélia). Os valores mais baixos do índice de rubefacção (valor médio de 4) foram observados nas amostras de Merzouga. As amostras colhidas nas áreas da Argélia apresentaram valores deste índice muito semelhantes (valor 6) mas o valor mais alto (11) foi observado em Saadana. A aproximação geoquímica baseada nos diagramas ternários e cluster de dendogramas indicaram a abundância de Fe, Ca e K, os quais foram usados como indicadores de transporte. El seguimiento de la erosión del suelo debe realizarse en un contexto regional para poder entender mejor sus causas y sus consecuencias. Una de las principales consecuencias es el notable incremento de invasiones de arena con negativas implicaciones ambientales. Por esta razón, en este trabajo se estudia la dinámica de las arenas entre el sureste de Marruecos y el wilaya de Nâama, suroeste de Argelia. Se presentan los resultados de los análisis fisico-químicos, colorimétricos (índice de enrojecimiento), morfoscópicos (circularidad) y geoquímicos realizados en muestras de arena de seis localidades diferentes. Estos resultados se interpretaron mediante análisis de varianza (ANOVA), datos bibliográficos de la dirección del viento, plots ternarios y conglomerados jerárquicos realizados con las concentraciones de los elementos traza (K, Rb, Fe, Ti, Ca y Sr). En todas las zonas estudiadas domina la fracción arena con un rango de porcentajes del 89% al 96%. Las muestras eran carbonatadas y el pH alcalino con valores comprendidos entre 8.4 y 9. Los valores medios de circularidad morfológica oscilan entre 0.6 en Merzouga (Marruecos) y 0.80 en El Aguer (Argelia). En las muestras recogidas en Argelia el índice de enrojecimiento fue muy similar, con valores de 6, pero el valor más alto se observó en Saadana, siendo de 11. El análisis geoquímico, interpretado mediante plots ternarios y dendrogramas, indicó que la abundancia de los elementos mayoritarios (Fe, Ca y K) puede ser indicadora del transporte eólico. Abstract

Background: Several lines of evidence suggest a tight association between oxidative stress and the pathogenesis of osteoporosis in humans. The intake of antioxidants may influence Bone Mineral Density by acting as free radical scavengers, preventing oxidation-induced damage to bone cells. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the association between the Dietary Antioxidant Quality Score and bone mineral density in a sample of healthy women. Methods: A total of 280 women were grouped into three major groups: women aged ≤ 35 years; women aged 36-45, and finally women aged >45 years. Calcaneous Bone Mineral Density (g/cm²) was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Data on the eating habits of each participant were collected with a structured 24-hour diet recall questionnaire. A Dietary Antioxidant Quality Score was used to calculate antioxidant-nutrient intake. Results: A significant and positive association was observed among Bone Mineral Density and dietary intake of vitamin C and selenium. Zinc intake was significantly related to Bone Mineral Density in the youngest group. Low antioxidant consumers were considered individuals whose Dietary Antioxidant Quality Score was lower or equal than the median (3.5), and high antioxidant consumers were those whose Dietary Antioxidant Quality Score were higher than 3.5. Bone Mineral Density was higher in the participants defined as high antioxidant consumers in all aged groups. Conclusion: The study showed that there is an association between Bone Mineral Density and the Dietary Antioxidant Quality Score in all the women studied. Therefore, new therapies for osteoporosis based on higher dietary antioxidant intakes might be developed basing on the results obtained in this study. Antecedentes: Varias líneas de evidencia sugieren que existe una estrecha relación entre el estrés oxidativo y la patogénesis de la osteoporosis en humanos. La ingesta de nutrientes antioxidantes puede influenciar la densidad mineral ósea al neutralizar los radicales libres, previniendo el daño oxidativo a las células de hueso. Objetivo: El objetivo del presente estudio es establecer la asociación entre un Índice de Calidad Antioxidante de la Dieta y la densidad mineral ósea en una muestra de mujeres sanas. Métodos: Un total de 280 mujeres participaron en el estudio. Las participantes fueron agrupadas por edad en tres categorías: edad ≤ 35 años; edad entre 36 y 45 años y con edad superior a 45 años. Las medidas de la densidad mineral ósea (g/cm²) del calcáneo fueron realizadas por absorciometría dual de rayos X. Los datos sobre los hábitos alimentarios de cada participante fueron recogidos mediante recordatorios de 24 horas. El Índice de Calidad Antioxidante de la Dieta se utilizó para calcular la ingesta total de nutrientes antioxidantes. Resultados: La ingesta de vitamina C y selenio está asociada significativamente a la densidad mineral ósea. En el grupo de mujeres de edad inferior, la ingesta de zinc está relacionada con la masa ósea. Los individuos cuyo Índice de Calidad Antioxidante de la Dieta es inferior o igual a la mediana (3,5) son considerados de bajo consumo antioxidante, y aquellos individuos cuyo Índice de Calidad Antioxidante de la Dieta es superior a 3,5 se consideran de alto consumo antioxidante. En todos los grupos estudiados, la densidad mineral ósea fue significativamente superior en los sujetos cuya dieta tiene un alto consumo de nutrientes antioxidantes. Conclusión: El trabajo muestra que existe una asociación entre la densidad mineral ósea y el Índice de Calidad Antioxidante de la Dieta en todos los grupos de mujeres estudiadas. Por lo tanto, basándose en los resultados de este estudio, se pueden desarrollar nuevas terapias para la osteoporosis basadas en una ingesta elevada de nutrientes antioxidantes.

Abstract

Much of the research and development effort in the IDS community is guided by a design approach, according to which user desires, expectations and agency are central. This approach may place unnecessary limitations on the design space. I argue for the validity and significance of an alternative, expressive approach, which may be more appealing to artists, and offer some formal parameters of IDS-as-Art. These open up for authors the ability to explore the creation of vastly complex and dynamic storyworlds that highlight contingency and probability; and the possibility of manipulating agency as subject matter to implicate users, through userly performance, in the storyworld’s meaning. IDS can thus offer users an opportunity to reflect upon various aspects of their performance, including un- and subintentional aspects.

El blog www.estadisticaportodaspartes.blogspot.com/ pretende que el alumno descubra las potencialidades de la Estadística y la Probabilidad, sus aplicaciones en la vida real, la necesidad de estas dos disciplinas en la sociedad actual, así como malos usos e interpretaciones erróneas de las mismas, tales como tablas o gráficos, por parte de instituciones y/o medios de comunicación. En definitiva, pretendemos que el alumno de cualquier ámbito no matemático afronte con menos temor y de una manera, creemos innovadora, las asignaturas con contenidos de Estadística y Probabilidad. Además, uno de los principales objetivos es hacerlo interactivo, de forma que el alumno sea parte activa del mismo aportando sugerencias y situaciones que a su juicio sean publicables en un post, de tal forma que se fomente el razonamiento crítico. También se desea que sea abierto a toda la comunidad estadística en cuanto a la proposición de los temas a tratar, y estaremos agradecidos de cualquier sugerencia de mejora. Abstract

Little research in Interactive Digital Storytelling (IDS) has been given to writing stories that convey a set of Learning Objectives (LOs). This is particularly important for educational IDS games. In this paper, we propose the STAR framework for formalizing the design of IDS stories for educational interventions. The story is designed as a set of red-herrings and clue puzzle in which the LOs are integrated. We present one of the three IDSes we designed based on this framework; we use one as a case study and present its evaluation. A study was undertaken to evaluate the game effectiveness in conveying the educational message. This study performed with 145 players shows that the players’ knowledge improved as a result of playing the game and that the change was statistically significant.

39. Retrospective study of the association between epidural analgesia during labour and complications for the newborn.

Abstract

Objective: our objective was to determine the association between epidural analgesia and different variables. Background: the effect on newborns of epidural analgesia administered to the mother during labour remains under debate. Method: this association was retrospectively investigated in a cohort of 2399 children born in a Spanish public hospital. Only full-term (> 37 weeks of gestation) deliveries were included. Other exclusion criteria were: induced delivery (medical or obstetric indication), elective caesarean section, or the presence of an important pregnancy risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, severe disease, toxaemia, retarded intrauterine growth, chronologically prolonged pregnancy, prolonged membrane rupture (> 24 hours), oligoamnios, or polyhydramnios). The Mann-Whitney Utest and Fisher's exact test were applied to determine the relationship between variables. Key conclusions: Apgar index values at one minute and five minutes were slightly but significantly lower in neonates whose mothers had received epidural analgesia. Neonatal intensive care unit admission was significantly more frequent in the epidural versus non-epidural group. Resuscitation was significantly more frequent in the epidural versus non-epidural group. Early breast feeding onset was more frequent in the non-epidural group. The adverse effect of epidural analgesia on early lactation remained significant after adjusting for NICU admission and the need for resuscitation in a logistic regression analysis. Epidural analgesia may have adverse effects on newborns, although the risks are low, and further research is required to elucidate the causal nature of this relationship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The soil science community needs to communicate about soils and the use of soil information to various audiences, especially to the general public and public authorities. In this global review article, we synthesis information pertaining to museums solely dedicated to soils or which contain a permanent exhibition on soils. We identified 38 soil museums specifically dedicated to soils, 34 permanent soil exhibitions, and 32 collections about soils that are accessible by appointment. We evaluate the growth of the number of museums since the early 1900s, their geographical distribution, their contents, and their attendance. The number of museums has been continuously growing since the early 1900s. A noticeable increase was observed from 2015 to 2019. Europe (in a geographical sense), Eastern and South-East Asia have the highest concentration of soil museums and permanent exhibitions related to soils. Most of the museums' attendance ranged from 1000 to 10,000 visitors per year. Russia has the largest number of soil monoliths exhibited across the world's museums, whereas the ISRIC-World Soil Museum has the richest and the most diverse collection of soil monoliths. Museums, collections, and exhibitions of soil play an important role in educating the population about this finite natural resource that maintains life on the planet, and for this reason, they must be increasingly supported, extended, and protected.

45. Association between dietary antioxidant quality score (DAQs) and bone mineral density in Spanish women.

Abstract

Background: Several lines of evidence suggest a tight association between oxidative stress and the pathogenesis of osteoporosis in humans. The intake of antioxidants may influence Bone Mineral Density by acting as free radical scavengers, preventing oxidation-induced damage to bone cells. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the association between the Dietary Antioxidant Quality Score and bone mineral density in a sample of healthy women. Methods: A total of 280 women were grouped into three major groups: women aged <= 35 years; women aged 36-45, and finally women aged >45 years. Calcaneous Bone Mineral Density (g/cm²) was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Data on the eating habits of each participant were collected with a structured 24-hour diet recall questionnaire. A Dietary Antioxidant Quality Score was used to calculate antioxidant-nutrient intake. Results: A significant and positive association was observed among Bone Mineral Density and dietary intake of vitamin C and selenium. Zinc intake was significantly related to Bone Mineral Density in the youngest group. Low antioxidant consumers were considered individuals whose Dietary Antioxidant Quality Score was lower or equal than the median (3.5), and high antioxidant consumers were those whose Dietary Antioxidant Quality Score were higher than 3.5. Bone Mineral Density was higher in the participants defined as high antioxidant consumers in all aged groups. Conclusion: The study showed that there is an association between Bone Mineral Density and the Dietary Antioxidant Quality Score in all the women studied. Therefore, new therapies for osteoporosis based on higher dietary antioxidant intakes might be developed basing on the results obtained in this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Physical training programmes are based on provoking transitory states of fatigue in order to induce super compensation by the biological systems involved in the activity, in order to improve the athlete's medium-long term performance. The administration of nutritional supplements with antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties, such as Phlebodium decumanum and coenzyme Q10, can be a very advantageous means of achieving recovery from the inflammation and tissue damage caused by the stress of prolonged, intense exercise. METHODOLOGY: An experimental, longitudinal, double- blind experiment was conducted, with three randomised groups obtained from a sample of 30 male volleyball players (aged 22-32 years) at the University of Granada, with a high level of training (17 hours a week during the 6 months preceding the study). The effects were then evaluated of a month-long physical training programme, common to all the study groups, associated with the simultaneous administration of the following nutritional supplements: Phlebodium decumanum (4 capsules of 400 mg/capsule, daily), Experimental Group 1; Phlebodium decumanum (same dose andchedule as Group 1) plus coenzyme Q10 (4 capsules of 30 mg/ capsule, daily), Experimental Group 2; a placebo substance, Control Group. The following dependent blood variables were examined to assess the effects of the intervention on the basal immune and endocrine-metabolic profile: cortisol and interleukin-6, both related to the axis of exercise-induced stress; and lactic acid and ammonium, related essentially to the anaerobic metabolism of energy. RESULTS: All the study groups presented favourable adaptive changes with respect to the endocrine-metabolic and immune profile, as reflected by a significant decrease in the post-test concentrations of cortisol, interleukin 6, lactic acid and ammonium, compared to the values recorded before the physical activity with/without nutritional supplement, per protocol. The groups that achieved the most favourable profile were those which had received nutritional supplementation, rather than the placebo, and among the former, those which had received the double- strength supplement with Phlebodium decumanum plus coenzyme Q10. CONCLUSIONS: The intake of Phlebodium decumanum plus coenzyme Q10 for 4 weeks produced protective effects on the endocrine-metabolic and immune profile, which we attribute to the immunomodulatory and antioxidant properties of these substances, which are highly beneficial not only in terms of delaying fatigue and improving athletic performance, but also in reducing the risk of injuries associated with high intensity exercise. Yes Introducción: Los programas de entrenamiento físico, se basan en provocar estados de fatiga transitoria para inducir supercompensaciones de los sistemas biológicos implicados en la actividad, con el objeto mejorar el rendimientodel deportista a medio-largo plazo. La administración de suplementos nutricionales con propiedades antioxidantes e inmunomoduladoras, como Phlebodium decumanum y Coenzima Q10, constituyen medidas muy ventajosas para la recuperación de la inflamación y el daño tisular originadospor el estrés del ejercicio intenso y mantenido. Metodología: Se llevó a cabo un diseño experimental longitudinal, a doble ciego, con tres grupos randomizados a partir de una muestra de 30 jugadores varones de voleibol (22-32 años) de la Universidad de Granada, con un nivel de entrenamiento alto (17 horas por semana en los 6 meses previos a la investigación). Se evaluaron los efectos de un programa de entrenamiento físico de un mes de duración, común a todos los grupos de estudio, asociado a la administración simultánea de suplementos nutricionales a base de Phlebodium decumanum (4 cápsulas de 400 mg/ cáp. al día) el Grupo Experimental 1, Phlebodium decumanum (la misma dosis y posología que el grupo 1) más Coenzima Q10 (4 cápsulas de 30 mg/cáp al día) el Grupo Experimental 2, y sustancia placebo, el Grupo Control.Las variables dependientes sanguíneas para valorar los efectos de dicha ntervención sobre el perfil endocrino metabólicoe inmunológico basales fueron: cortisol e interleuquina 6 relacionados ambos con el eje del estrés inducido por el ejercicio, y ácido láctico y amonio, vinculados esencialmente, al metabolismo energético anaeróbio. Resultados: Todos los grupos del estudio manifestaron cambios adaptativos favorables sobre el perfil endocrino-metabólico e inmunológico, que se objetivaron a través de un descenso significativo basal postest de las concentraciones de cortisol, interleuquina 6, ácido láctico y amoniaco, respecto a los valores previos a la intervención actividad física ± suplemención nutricional protocolizada. Los grupos que mostraron un perfil más favorable, fueron los que recibieron suplementación nutricional frente a placebo, y de entre los primeros, los sujetos que tomaron doble suplementación con Phlebodium decumanum más Coenzima Q10. Conclusiones: La ingesta de Phlebodium decumanum y de Coenzima Q10 durante 4 semanas, mostró efectos protectores sobre el perfil endocrino-metabólico e inmunológico basales, que atribuimos a las propiedades inmunomoduladoras y antioxidantes de ambas sustancias, lo que no sólo resulta altamente beneficioso para retrasar la fatiga y mejorar el rendimiento deportivo, sino también, para disminuir el riesgo de lesiones asociadas al ejercicio físico de alta intensidad.

Abstract

Background: Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), they have contributed to the exposure of women to persistent organic pollutants (POPs). These compounds can cross the placental barrier and interfere with the hormonal system of newborns., Aim: To determine concentrations of OCPs and PCBs and their xenoestrogenic activity in placentas of women from the PA-MAMI cohort of Panama., Methods: Thirty-nine placenta samples from women in the Azuero peninsula (Panama) were analyzed. Five OCPs [p-p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p-p'-DDE), beta-hexachlorohexane (β-HCH), γ-hexachlorohexane (lindane), hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and mirex] and three PCB congeners (PCB-138, PCB-153 and PCB-180) were quantified in placenta extracts. The xenoestrogenic activity of extracts was assessed with the E-Screen bioassay to estimate the total effective xenoestrogen burden (TEXB)., Results: All placental samples were positive for at least three POP residues and >70% for at least six. The frequencies of quantified OCPs ranged from 100% for p,p'-DDE and HCB to 30.8% for β-HCH. The highest median concentration was for lindane (380.0 pg/g placenta), followed by p,p'-DDE (280.0 pg/g placenta), and HCB (90.0 pg/g placenta). Exposure to p,p'-DDE was associated with greater meat consumption, suggesting that animal fat is a major source of exposure to DDT metabolites. The frequency of detected PCBs ranged between 70 and 90%; the highest median concentration was for PCB 138 (17.0 pg/g placenta), followed by PCB 153 (16.0 pg/g placenta). All placentas were positive in the estrogenicity bioassay with a median TEXB-α of 0.91 pM Eeq/g of placenta. Exposure to lindane was positively associated with the xenoestrogenicity of TEXB- α, whereas this association was negative in the case of exposure to PCB 153., Conclusions: To our best knowledge, this study contributes the first evidence on the presence of POPs and xenoestrogenic burden in placentas from Latin-American women. Abstract

Chronic exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is suspected to contribute to the onset of breast cancer, but the impact on the evolution of patients after diagnosis is unclear. We aimed to analyze the contribution of long-term exposure to five POPs to overall mortality, cancer recurrence, metastasis, and development of second primary tumors over a global follow-up of 10 years after surgery in breast cancer patients in a cohort study. Between 2012 and 2014, a total of 112 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients were recruited from a public hospital in Granada, Southern Spain. Historical exposure to POPs was estimated by analyzing their concentrations in breast adipose tissue samples. Sociodemographic data were collected through face-to-face interviews, while data on evolution tumor were retrieved from clinical records. Statistical analyses were performed using Cox regression (overall survival, breast cancer recurrence or metastasis) and binary logistic regression models (joint outcome variable). We also tested for statistical interactions of POPs with age, residence, and prognostic markers. The third vs first tertile of hexachlorobenzene concentrations was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality (Hazard Ratio, HR = 0.26; 95 % Confidence Interval, CI = 0.07-0.92) and of the appearance of any of the four events (Odds Ratio = 0.37; 95 % CI = 0.14-1.03). Polychlorinated biphenyl 138 concentrations were significantly and inversely associated with risk of metastasis (HR = 0.65; 95 % CI = 0.44-0.97) and tumor recurrence (HR = 0.69; 95 % CI = 0.49-0.98). Additionally, p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene showed inverse associations with risk of metastasis in women with ER-positive tumors (HR = 0.49; 95 % CI = 0.25-0.93) and in those with a tumor size <2.0 cm (HR = 0.39; 95 % CI = 0.18-0.87). Abstract

Aim: To describe the expression profile in endometriotic tissue of genes involved in four signaling pathways related to the development and progression of endometriosis (cell cycle, apoptosis, cell differentiation and lipid metabolism) and to explore its relationship with the women exposure to chemicals with hormonal activity released from cosmetics and personal care products (PCPs)., Methods: This cross-sectional study, encompassed within the EndEA study, comprised a subsample of 33 women with endometriosis. Expression levels of 13 genes (BMI1, CCNB1, CDK1, BAX, BCL2L1, FOXO3, SPP1, HOXA10, PDGFRA, SOX2, APOE, PLCG1 and PLCG2) in endometriotic tissue and urinary concentrations of 4 paraben (PB) and 3 benzophenone (BP) congeners were quantified. Bivariate linear and logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the associations between exposure and gene expression levels., Results: A total of 8 out 13 genes (61.5 %) were expressed in >75 % of the samples. Exposure to congeners of PBs and/or BPs was associated with the overexpression of CDK1 gene (whose protein drives cells through G2 phase and mitosis), HOXA10 and PDGFRA genes (whose proteins favor pluripotent cell differentiation to endometrial cells), and APOE (whose protein regulates the transport and metabolism of cholesterol, triglycerides and phospholipids in multiple tissues) and PLCG2 genes (whose protein creates 1D-myo-inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate and diacylglycerol, two important second messengers)., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that women exposure to cosmetic and PCP-released chemicals might be associated with the promotion of cell cycle and cell differentiation as well as with lipid metabolism disruption in endometriotic tissue, three crucial signaling pathways in the development and progression of endometriosis. Abstract

Background: Numerous contemporary non-persistent pesticides may elicit neurodevelopmental impairments. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been proposed as a novel effect biomarker of neurological function that could help to understand the biological responses of some environmental exposures., Objectives: To investigate the relationship between exposure to various non-persistent pesticides, BDNF, and behavioral functioning among adolescents., Methods: The concentrations of organophosphate (OP) insecticide metabolites 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCPy), 2-isopropyl-4-methyl-6-hydroxypyrimidine (IMPy), malathion diacid (MDA), and diethyl thiophosphate (DETP); metabolites of pyrethroids 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA) and dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid (DCCA), the metabolite of insecticide carbaryl 1-naphthol (1-N), and the metabolite of ethylene-bis-dithiocarbamate fungicides ethylene thiourea (ETU) were measured in spot urine samples, as well as serum BDNF protein levels and blood DNA methylation of Exon IV of BDNF gene in 15-17-year-old boys from the INMA-Granada cohort in Spain. Adolescents' behavior was reported by parents using the Child Behavior Check List (CBCL/6-18). This study included 140 adolescents of whom 118 had data on BDNF gene DNA methylation. Multivariable linear regression, weighted quantile sum (WQS) for mixture effects, and mediation models were fit., Results: IMPy, MDA, DCCA, and ETU were detected in more than 70% of urine samples, DETP in 53%, and TCPy, 3-PBA, and 1-N in less than 50% of samples. Higher levels of IMPy, TCPy, and ETU were significantly associated with more behavioral problems as social, thought problems, and rule-breaking symptoms. IMPy, MDA, DETP, and 1-N were significantly associated with decreased serum BDNF levels, while MDA, 3-PBA, and ETU were associated with higher DNA methylation percentages at several CpGs. WQS models suggest a mixture effect on more behavioral problems and BDNF DNA methylation at several CpGs. A mediated effect of serum BDNF within IMPy-thought and IMPy-rule breaking associations was suggested., Conclusion: BDNF biomarkers measured at different levels of biological complexity provided novel information regarding the potential disruption of behavioral function due to contemporary pesticides, highlighting exposure to diazinon (IMPy) and the combined effect of IMPy, MDA, DCCA, and ETU.
