2. An EEG-based approach for Parkinson's disease diagnosis using Capsule network

Abstract

As the second most common neurodegenerative disease, Parkinson's disease has caused serious problems worldwide. However, the cause and mechanism of PD are not clear, and no systematic early diagnosis and treatment of PD have been established. Many patients with PD have not been diagnosed or misdiagnosed. In this paper, we proposed an EEG-based approach to diagnosing Parkinson's disease. It mapped the frequency band energy of electroencephalogram(EEG) signals to 2-dimensional images using the interpolation method and identified classification using capsule network(CapsNet) and achieved 89.34% classification accuracy for short-term EEG sections. A comparison of separate classification accuracy across different EEG bands revealed the highest accuracy in the gamma bands, suggesting that we need to pay more attention to the changes in gamma band changes in the early stages of PD., Comment: 6 pages,2 image, 3 tables

Abstract

Using group‐level functional parcellations and constant‐length sliding window analysis, dynamic functional connectivity studies have revealed network‐specific impairment and compensation in healthy ageing. However, functional parcellation and dynamic time windows vary across individuals; individual‐level ageing‐related brain dynamics are uncertain. Here, we performed individual parcellation and individual‐length sliding window clustering to characterize ageing‐related dynamic network changes. Healthy participants (n = 637, 18–88 years) from the Cambridge Centre for Ageing and Neuroscience dataset were included. An individual seven‐network parcellation, varied from group‐level parcellation, was mapped for each participant. For each network, strong and weak cognitive brain states were revealed by individual‐length sliding window clustering and canonical correlation analysis. The results showed negative linear correlations between age and change ratios of sizes in the default mode, frontoparietal, and salience networks and a positive linear correlation between age and change ratios of size in the limbic network (LN). With increasing age, the occurrence and dwell time of strong states showed inverted U‐shaped patterns or a linear decreasing pattern in most networks but showed a linear increasing pattern in the LN. Overall, this study reveals a compensative increase in emotional networks (i.e., the LN) and a decline in cognitive and primary sensory networks in healthy ageing. These findings may provide insights into network‐specific and individual‐level targeting during neuromodulation in ageing and ageing‐related diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

36. Visual Motion Processing Areas in the Human Brain Based on a Wide-Field Retinotopic Mapping Technique

Abstract

Introduction: The wide-field visual cortex, known as MT+/V5 and V6 plays a major role in the visual processing of motion in the brain. In the current study, we located the MT+/V5 complex, which was divided into three sub-regions: the middle temporal (MT) area for central stimuli and the medial superior temporal (MST) area and V6 for peripheral stimuli. Previous studies of these areas were typically limited to the central (eccentricity is from 8° to 30°) visual fields. Methods: Using a wide-view presentation system, we presented a horizontal and vertical visual angle up to 120° in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) environment. Result: Our results suggest that the MT+ area is significantly larger than indicated by previous studies on wide-field stimuli. The MST and V6 areas responded strongly to peripheral stimulation, and the MST responded strongly to ipsilateral stimulation, while MST also responded to central stimulation. Conclusion: Furthermore, we also used retinotopic mapping with stimuli consisting of motion dots to localize the MT+ and the wide-field motion area V6. The retinotopic maps divided the composition of the visual field maps into four segments within a functionally subdivided MT+.

37. Transcranial focused ultrasound precise neuromodulation: a review of focal size regulation, treatment efficiency and mechanisms.

Abstract

Ultrasound is a mechanical wave that can non-invasively penetrate the skull to deep brain regions to activate neurons. Transcranial focused ultrasound neuromodulation is a promising approach, with the advantages of noninvasiveness, high-resolution, and deep penetration, which developed rapidly over the past years. However, conventional transcranial ultrasound's spatial resolution is low-precision which hinders its use in precision neuromodulation. Here we focus on methods that could increase the spatial resolution, gain modulation efficiency at the focal spot, and potential mechanisms of ultrasound neuromodulation.
