We examine several determinants of farmland values in the Campine region (Belgium) using data on individual sales transactions. Since the study area is well known to have a legacy of heavy-metal pollution of land, one of the focal points is the implicit price of cadmium (Cd) pollution. We use a hedonic pricing model, applying both mean regression (OLS) and quantile regression (QR). Unlike previous hedonic studies using QR, we use unconditional QR (Firpo et al. 2009). The estimates obtained using UQR have a more intuitive interpretation than those obtained using standard (conditional) QR, and allow for less ambiguous comparisons with their OLS counterparts. We find only moderate evidence of price discounts in the middle (median) price range due to Cd contamination. On the other hand, we find that farmland values are strongly affected by the development potential of agricultural land due to urban pressure.

We investigate the effects of local characteristics on destination choices of international migrants to the Madrid metropolitan area. It is argued that the choice of a particular location does not only depend on the attractiveness of that location but also on the attractiveness of all other locations in the choice set. This is likely to be more important with a narrowly defined choice set with a fairly high degree of substitutability between functionally similar locations. We use the term “multilateral attractiveness” to refer to the unobserved influence exerted by all locations in the spatial choice set. Taking advantage of the equivalence relation that exists between Conditional Logit and Poisson, we estimate a location-choice model using the Poisson pseudo maximum likelihood estimator. Location-specific effects have been incorporated to account for unobserved spatial similarities (i.e., for possible violations of the IIA assumption). The fixed-effects Poisson model is applied to municipality-level migration data, for a set of five broadly defined groups of immigrants. The proposed estimation strategy has important empirical implications, where the magnitudes and/or signs of the estimated coefficients change in the expected direction. We find that the spatial pattern of immigrants’ location choices is fairly persistent over the time span considered. We also find that the impacts of local ethnic communities (network effects) are insignificant in some instances, while suggesting hetero-local settlement preferences or possible in-group rivalry in other instances.

The standard gravity model of aggregate migration erroneously assumes homogeneity, quasi-symmetry, and (log) linearity. As a result, estimation of the model using, say, the convenient OLS estimator is plagued by omitted-variables and misspecification biases. This paper, therefore, presents estimates for a cross-section gravity model controlling for unobserved unilateral (origin-/destination-specific) and bilateral (flow-specific) effects. Individual slopes on the bilateral linkage factors have been included to account for potentially correlated heterogeneity in the bilateral dimension that is distinctively related to distance, contiguity, and previous migration (migrant stock), respectively. To implement the model, I use a novel "three-way" fixed-effects type of Generalized Maximum Entropy estimator (FE-GME). The importance of fixed effects is demonstrated by comparing the FE-GME results with those obtained from OLS. The model is applied for an exploratory analysis of cross-sectional data on inter-state migration in Mexico during the period 1995-2000. It is found that accounting for unobserved heterogeneity in all three dimensions results in appreciably lower magnitudes of all coefficients (except the one on distance!), while most of them retain their statistical significance. Moreover, including bilateral fixed-effects is found to be instrumental in keeping with arbitrary heteroskedasticity, even if the gravity model is specified in its conventional double-log form.

In the literature on financing constraints, recent studies estimate firm-varying investment-cash flow sensitivities (ICFS) to avoid methodological problems related to comparing sample-level estimates across groups. We go along with these advances and suggest two additional methodological improvements. First, we estimate firmvarying ICFS by modeling heterogeneous slopes in the investment equation, thereby taking into account the dynamics of the underlying investment model. Secondly, we study the drivers of ICFS in an ex-post regression thereby accounting for non-linear effects and ‘ceteris-paribus’-conditions. The results show that the ICFS is negatively related to size, dividend payout, profitability, and positively related to leverage suggesting a tight link between the ICFS and the firm’s constraints-status. Additionally, the ICFS is negatively related to the level and volatility of cash flow, suggesting that a significant ICFS occurs mainly in low cash flow-states and is lowered by the practice of cash-buffering when cash flows are volatile. Finally, we find evidence of a non-linear tangibility effect in line with the non-monotonic credit multiplier suggested in previous research.

Using a cross sectional sample of 2,863 family firms from the 1998 NSSBF database, we examine the relationship between family ownership and financial performance for small and medium-sized family firms with a chained-interaction model in which we combine ownership dispersion proxies with moderating management and family variables. Our results suggest that ownership dispersion has a positive influence on performance when the family firm is in a later generational stage, giving support to predictions put forth by agency cost models in private family firms (Schulze et al., 2003). Our results also suggest that the zero agency-cost base case as described by Jensen and Meckling (1976) is in fact no zero agency cost case due to ignored agency costs in family firms.

In this paper, I present an empirical study of aggregate inter-state migration in Mexico in the period 1995-2000. The study contributes to the empirical literature on migration in a number of ways. Firstly, I show that the gravity model in levels (Poisson model) provides a more realistic description of the migration process than a model in logs (log-linear model). Secondly, I develop a more flexible model by relaxing the standard assumption of spatial invariance (constancy) of the distance-decay parameter. This added flexibility should allow one to account for the effects of ‘idiosyncratic’ ties between origin and destination states (imperfect information). Thirdly, the model attempts to bring together elements from both the neo-classical (economic opportunities) and the cumulative-causation (migrant networks) perspectives on migration. Finally, the model is estimated by using the ‘non-classical’ generalized maximum-entropy method to cope with overparameterization in a cross-sectional setting. An interesting finding is that inter-state migration in Mexico is generally inelastic with respect to geographical distance measure after correcting for the effects of some structural (historical) components of migration, such as migrant stocks.

Standard farm-accounting information is typically restricted to aggregate input expenditures, without revealing the allocation of these expenditures to the various farm enterprises. Given the diversified enterprise base of most farm businesses, a proper assessment of each enterprise's contribution to overall farm performance is severely obscured. This paper presents a new approach for estimating the unobserved input-output or (preferably) cost-allocation coefficients for multi-product farms. Specifically, a model with (non-randomly) varying coefficients is developed, which also allows for a more realistic appraisal of the "real-world" diversity of farm operations. The coefficients of the model are estimated using the Generalized Cross-Entropy (GCE) method. The GCE method proves to be an effective way to obtain unique estimates of farm-specific cost-allocation coefficients and to overcome the many practical problems usually encountered in earlier empirical works. The proposed GCE estimator is applied to a set of 2000-2001 accounting data for a small sample of beef-dairy farms located in Brittany, France.

Hedonic pricing models that apply data from many different metropolitan areas are subject to considerable cross-sectional and spatial heterogeneity. When disregarded, this heterogeneity can have important consequences for estimation and inference. In the present paper we develop a flexible entropy-based estimator that allows controlling for several sources of (unobserved) heterogeneity in the hedonic price function. In the empirical application, we examine the performance of the new estimator applying data from the seminal Harrison and Rubinfeld paper on hedonic pricing. Our empirical results show how failure to control for cross-sectional and spatial heterogeneity may result in biased coefficients and a loss of explanatory power. Furthermore, analysis of the individual sensitivities reveals important dynamics regarding the operation of the housing markets.

This paper investigates inter-municipal migration flows in Belgium using a Poisson gravity model. Besides distance, the model also includes municipal-specific factors as explanatory variables. The model is tested using aggregate, cross-sectional, data on migrations between the municipalities of the Belgian province of Limburg, over the period 1998-2003. The model assumes heterogeneity of the distance-deterrence effect. The model also accounts for unobserved origin/destination characteristics. To overcome the problem of under-determinacy, we use the method of Generalized Cross-Entropy estimation. A number of major findings stand out. Firstly, we find evidence of a "U-shaped" relationship between the distance-deterrence elasticity and distance, where the distance elasticity is smaller for short-distance moves. Secondly, distance between origin and destination reinforces (attenuates) the pull effect of local employment opportunities (amenities). This finding may indicating a shift in the composition of migration flows from residential migration to labor migration as distance increases. Finally, the spatial distribution of the net pull effects of unobserved factors seem to coincide with proximity to major roads and railway stations.

This paper presents the results from a multivariate (factor and cluster) analysis of the variation in innovation processes of manufacturing and service firms. Using data from the third Community Innovation Survey for Flanders (Belgium), a set of seven clusters of firms that are to be interpreted as “innovation patterns” or “innovation strategies” is identified. Two major findings emerge: (i) the “sectoral determinism” of innovation does not hold true for Flemish firms; (ii) firms in the service industry seem to form a separate, “low-profile” innovation cluster. In conclusion, we point to some important implications for the design of adequate innovation-policy measures.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) has an ongoing research program to provide information on the effect of potential agricultural policy and technology scenarios on the environment and the economic conditions, behavior and performance in the agriculture sector. Included in this work program is a project to improve our farm level data on cost of production and farm management practices for economic and environmental analysis. As part of this effort to improve our data, this report evaluates an analytical method, called Maximum Entropy (ME), for its effectiveness in extracting detailed, enterprise level, cost of production information from whole-farm data. The ME method has been shown to be a promising and cost-effective option for obtaining these enterprise-level estimates from whole-farm data sets already available.

International audience; Les auteurs présentent la procédure d'estimation du maximum d'entropie généralisée (GME en anglais) appliquée à une version contrainte du modèle à coefficients aléatoires mis au point par Hildreth et Houck. L'approche proposée est bien plus pratique et plus efficace que les méthodes "classiques" d'estimation par les moindres carrés ou par le maximum de vraisemblance. Cette procédure d'estimation est utilisée pour obtenir en une seule fois les valeurs estimées et les variances de coefficients techniques de production appartenant à un système d'équations de demandes de facteurs de production. Les auteurs appliquent la méthode GME à un ensemble de données comptables d'exploitations agricoles bretonnes spécialisées dans les productions de lait et de viande bovine. L'approche proposée permet de ventiler les dépenses d'intrants de chaque exploitation entre leurs différentes activités de production tout en satisfaisant plusieurs contraintes telles que la non-négativité des coefficients techniques et l'identité comptable entre recettes et dépenses, tout en prenant en compte en même temps la nature stochastique et la diversité des relations de production, le biais de sélection et le fait que les termes résiduels propres à chaque intrant varient en fonction de la taille des exploitations agricoles et de leur combinaison multi-productive.

This paper proposes a multiple-output Symmetric Generalised McFadden (SGM) cost function, incorporating both exogenous and endogenous technological change. Whilst exogenous technological change is captured by the usual time trend, endogenous or price-induced technological change is cast within a partial-adjustment framework involving lagged input prices. The study points to various dimensions or components of technological change, and allows to disentangle "pure" factor substitution, given the state of the technology, from factor substitution due to price-induced changes in technology. Under the conditions of non-jointness in input quantities, the model further allows to identify technological change biases for each output separately. An empirical application is presented in which the proposed model is applied to time-series data on the feed manufacturing industry in Belgium. To improve on the econometrics, the SGM cost function also incorporates linear splines.; Ce document de recherche développe une fonction de coût symétrique généralisée de McFadden (dénommé SGM) à produits multiples, intégrant l'effet du changement technique par le biais d'un mécanisme d'ajustement partiel. Sous certaines conditions de non-jointure, telles que celles définies par Hall (1973), le modèle permet d'identifier les biais dus aux changements techniques attribuables à chaque produit pris individuellement. L'étude met aussi en avant les dimensions ou composantes diverses du changement technique, permettant d'isoler l'effet "pur" de substitution, pour un niveau donné de changement technique, de l'effet de substitution dû aux changements techniques induits par les prix. On présente une application empirique où le modèle proposé est estimé à l'aide de séries temporelles se rapportant à l'industrie belge des aliments composés. Pour améliorer la qualité économétrique des résultats, la fonction de coût SGM incorpore des "trends" linéaires en arêtes comme l'ont suggéré Diewert et Wales (1992).

Les caractéristiques spécifiques du modèle sont les suivantes : 1. utilisation des formes fonctionnelles flexibles (e. g. la forme généralisée symétrique et asymétrique de McFadden) pour représenter les demandes d'aliments fourragers au Bénélux et dans le reste de l'UE, et 2. prise en compte de changements techniques exogènes ou induits par les prix. Les prix mondiaux des aliments fourragers et les prix des aliments composés sont endogénéisés à l'aide des conditions d'équilibre de marché. Ce modèle permet de quantifier les effets du changement dans les politiques agricoles de l'EU et des engagements pris dans le cadre de négociations de l'Uruguay Round sur le complexe alimentation et production animales. Comme toutes les composantes du modèle sont dynamiques, il est possible d'identifier et de distinguer les effets de court et de long termes de ces changements de politiques.

La méthode GME utilise la mesure d'information de Shannon comme outil d'estimation et d'inférence. Celle-ci permet d'introduire une cohérence supplémentaire et/ou des contraintes de calibrage à des systèmes d'équation. La performance de la méthode GME est comparée à trois autres approches d'estimation : la méthode des moindres carrés, l'estimation bayésienne, et la programmation linéaire. Ces différentes méthodes sont évaluées à l'aide de données comptables du RICA européen (Réseau d'information comptable agricole) relatives à un groupe d'exploitations d'élevage mixte (viande bovine/lait). On conclut que la méthode GME est une alternative intéressante par rapport aux méthodes plus "traditionnelles".

Vu comme étant le résultat d'une décision intertemporelle d'investissement fondée sur les prix, le progrès technique est modélisé de manière dynamique (en utilisant des prix décalés). Les modèles empiriques présentés dans cette communication permettent de distinguer les effets "purs" de substitution pour un état de la technologie donné et ceux résultant d'un changement du progrès technique induits par les prix. De plus, les variantes en "variation" et en "niveau" propres à l'hypothèse d'innovation induite, observées par Olmstead et Rhode (1993) sont identifiées. Des spécifications dynamiques alternatives reposant sur l'utilisation des formes fonctionnelles flexibles sont estimées. Bien que l'on mette principalement l'accent dans cette communication sur l'utilisation d'une version modifiée de la fonction de coût symétrique généralisée de McFadden, on a également estimé, à des fins de comparaison, la fonction de coût Translog. Le modèle proposé est ensuite utilisé pour estimer les fonctions de coût du secteur belge des aliments composés.

An aggregator model of feed input demand in the Benelux compound feed sectors: a preliminary analysis

Egalement paru, en anglais, dans : Tijdshrift voor sociaal wetenschappelijk onderzoek van de landbouw, 1, 1994, pp 5-25; Cet article analyse la sensibilité prix de la demande de matières premières consommées par les fabricants d'aliments composés au Benelux. Pour ce faire, des élasticités prix sont obtenues en spécifiant des fonctions de coût, et en estimant les demandes dérivées d'intrants fourragers qui leur sont associées. L'ensemble des matières premières consommées par le secteur de l'alimentation animale est pris en compte, en supposant que la technologie correspondante est caractérisée par une structure faiblement séparable. La forme fonctionnelle symétrique généralisée de McFadden est utilisée pour représenter les différentes fonctions de coût. Un examen des matrices d'élasticités prix permet de dégager les conclusions suivantes : la demande de la plupart des céréales et matières riches en protéines consommées au Pays-Bas est inélastique ; il en est de même, en Belgique, pour celle de la majorité des substituts de céréales et des matières riches en protéines ; par contre, la demande de chaque céréale dans ce dernier pays tend à réagir fortement aux variations de son prix ; enfin, la catégorie "additifs" a une demande très inélastique par rapport à son prix.

Les auteurs mettent en évidence le fait que ces deux études n'ont pas réussi à prendre en compte l'ensemble complet des contraintes imposées aux paramètres des fonctions (d'agrégation) des prix. On montre en effet que la normalisation conventionnelle des données effectuée dans les recherches empiriques implique l'imposition d'une restriction supplémentaire sur certains des paramètres. Comme la dérivation des fonctions de prix est un cas particulier de l'estimation de systèmes de fonctions de demande d'intrants sous des conditions de rendements d'échelle constants, cette note a un intérêt qui va bien au delà des deux études précitées. A titre d'illustration, trois formes fonctionnelles flexibles communément employées sont estimées et l'impact de cette contrainte supplémentaire sur les valeurs des élasticités prix obtenues est examiné.

This paper reviews the 'state of the art' in the field of modelling feed demand in the EC. After presenting a general conceptual framework, several methods for empirically estimating feed demand responses to prices changes are classified. Also, a method is proposed for econometrically estimating (1) the allocation of feed ingredients among different livestock categories, (2) the composition of the various livestock rations, and (3) feed input demand elasticities differentiated according to type of livestock, by using aggregate market data. The potentials of this method for covering all marketable feed ingredients will be explored. In conclusion, some pending research issues will be discussed.

In this paper a multiple-output cost function framework is proposed to construct national feed balances or feed utilisation matrices (FUMs). The framework is applied to the Belgian compound feed industry. For estimation purposes a Symmetric Generalised McFadden (SGM) cost function is selected. The cost function is estimated using readily available time-series data for the period 1962-88. Unlike previous studies based on duality theory, this study exploits the properties of nonjointness in animal feed production to establish a complete FUM. The allocation of feed ingredients among different livestock categories as well as the composition of various compound feeds are identified. Also own- and cross-price elasticities of demand for feed ingredients by type of livestock are reported.

Les auteurs présentent un modèle économétrique capable de mesurer d'une part les relations de substitution entre matières premières commercialisables destinées à l'alimentation animale, et d'autre part de les répartir entre les différentes catégories d'animaux. La méthode d'investigation repose sur la notion de fonction duale de coût. Ce modèle est appliqué aux secteurs belge et néerlandais des aliments composés. Le modèle empirique repose sur la spécification d'une fonction de coût symétrique de type McFadden, qui peut satisfaire globalement les propriétés de concavité. On rapporte trois types de résultats : des matrices d'élasticités prix à niveau de production constant et variable ; des tableaux présentant des matrices de répartition des matières premières commercialisables par catégories d'animaux et des tableaux input-output montrant la composition des rations alimentaires. Ces résultats sont fort intéressants, à la fois pour les analystes et les décideurs en politique, car ils fournissent des renseignements utiles sur la structure et l'évolution de la demande des aliments du bétail commercialisables et une synthèse des interactions entre les secteurs alimentation animale et élevage lorsque les prix et/ou des mesures de politique changent.
