Experimental configurations have been implemented to determine the acoustic response of a test material, based on the transfer function analysis, by using a chirp signal along an impedance tube covering a frequency response of 5 kHz. This work describes an experimental setup with two acoustic chambers which are tested to quantify the absorption coefficient in terms of the reflection and transmission responses in a frequency range up to 10 kHz. A modulated amplitude wave train, in which the frequency increases, is assessed to identify the response for each recorded signal and to calculate the acoustic coefficients from a steady state analysis. The length of the tube prevents the overlapping of acoustic waves, thereby removing the transient effects of a loudspeaker. The process requires a characterization protocol to quantify the attenuation coefficient of wave propagation, supported by four microphones placed flush at the inner diameter as a frequency response function. Three test materials, with high and low density, were characterized to compare their acoustic responses in frequency and time domains, which may be used to define their application in the architectural acoustic field and simulate the response by filtering a sound stimulus. Here we build from the central strength of the existing definition of dyslexia-its emphasis on neurobiological origins-and proffer a set of seven core principles for a new, more comprehensive conceptualization of dyslexia. These principles derive from two major research directions: (1) the still evolving history of attempts to explain dyslexia, including in varied writing systems; and (2) the study of the reading brain circuit, its development, and its genetic and environmental influences. What emerges from connecting these two directions is a dynamic conceptualization of dyslexia that incorporates the extensive research on the heterogeneity of dyslexia and the interdependent contributions of multiple biological and socio-cultural risk and preventive factors. A new definition of dyslexia, therefore, needs to transcend both past unitary characterizations and past assumptions based largely on the English orthography. Such a conceptualization references the ways that different languages interact with the reading brain circuit to produce different sources of reading failure. Similarly, the characteristics and consequences of dyslexia that have been considered as secondary sequela (e.g., reduced reading comprehension, social-emotional issues) should be part of a more comprehensive narrative. Of critical importance, any definition of dyslexia should clarify persisting misconceptions that associate dyslexia with a lack of intelligence, potential to learn, or talents. Background: Leprosy is a neglected dermato-neurologic, infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae or M. lepromatosis. Leprosy is treatable and curable by multidrug therapy/MDT, consisting of 12 months rifampicin, dapsone and clofazimine for multibacillary/MB patients and for 6 months for paucibacillary/PB patients. The relapse rate is considered a crucial treatment outcome. A randomized Controlled Clinical Trial (U-MDT/CT-BR) conducted from 2007‒2012 compared clinical outcomes in MB patients after 12 months regular MDT/R-MDT and 6 months uniform MDT/U-MDT in two highly endemic Brazilian areas., Objectives: To estimate the 10 years relapse rate of MB patients treated with 6 months U-MDT., Methods: The statistical analyses treated the data as a case-control study, sampled from the cohort generated for the randomized trial. Analyses estimated univariate odds ratio and applied logistic regression for multivariate analysis, controlling the confounding variables., Results: The overall relapse rate was 4.08 %: 4.95 % (16 out of 323) in the U-MDT group and 3.10 % (9 out of 290) in the regular/R-MDT group. The difference in relapse proportion between U-MDT and R-MDT groups was 1.85 %, not statistically significant (Odds Ratio = 1.63, 95 % CI 0.71 to 3.74).
