2. Hide-and-Seek in a Highly Human-Dominated Landscape: Insights into Movement Patterns and Selection of Resting Sites of Rehabilitated Wolves (Canis lupus) in Northern Italy

Abstract

Assessing the behavioural responses of floating wolves to human presence is crucial for investigating the chance of wolf populations expanding into urbanised landscapes. We studied the movement ecology of three rehabilitated wolves in a highly human-dominated landscape (Po Plain, Italy) to explore wolf’s plasticity amid widespread human pressure. To reach this aim, we estimated individual 95% utilisation distributions (UD) after the release and inspected both 95% UDs and net squared displacements to identify individual movement patterns; tested for differences in movement patterns during day and night; and analysed the selection of resting sites during dispersal movement in a highly human-altered environment. Both the 95% UDs and step lengths were smaller for wolves settling in suitable areas than for those settling in more urbanised areas. All wolves exhibited strong temporal segregation with humans during all movement phases, particularly while dispersing across highly urbanised areas. Main roads and proximity to built-up areas were shown to limit wolves’ dispersal, whereas small-wooded patches that provide shelter during rest facilitated long-distance movements. This study provides important insights into wolf movement and settling in urban and peri-urban areas, providing critical knowledge to promote human–carnivore coexistence.

3. Output Spectrum of Single-Atom Lasers

Abstract

We consider a laser composed of a single atom in a microcavity, with a coherent or incoherent pump. We consider both three- and four-level gain schemes, and examine the output spectrum of such lasers. We find that the linewidth generally scales as the inverse of the photon number. For large atom-field coupling, a vacuum-Rabi doublet structure is obtained. In the three-level case, this vacuum-Rabi splitting is apparent only for small intracavity photon numbers, and vanishes for large pumps. In the four-level scheme, the vacuum-Rabi structure appears at a nonzero pump level, and is maintained for large pumps, even when the intracavity photon number is larger than unity. Abstract

International audience; Human activity and associated landscape modifications alter the movements of animals with consequences for populations and ecosystems worldwide. Species performing long-distance movements are thought to be particularly sensitive to human impact. Despite the increasing anthropogenic pressure, it remains challenging to understand and predict animals' responses to human activity. Here we address this knowledge gap using 1206 Global Positioning System movement trajectories of 815 individuals from 14 red deer (Cervus elaphus) and 14 elk (Cervus canadensis) populations spanning wide environmental gradients, namely the latitudinal range from the Alps to Scandinavia in Europe, and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem in North America. We measured individual-level movements relative to the environmental context, or movement expression, using the standardized metric Intensity of Use, reflecting both the directionality and extent of movements. We expected movement expression to be affected by resource (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI) predictability and topography, but those factors to be superseded by human impact. Red deer and elk movement expression varied along a continuum, from highly segmented trajectories over relatively small areas (high intensity of use), to directed transitions through restricted corridors (low intensity of use). Human activity (Human Footprint Index, HFI) was the strongest driver of movement expression, with a steep increase in Intensity of Use as HFI increased, but only until a threshold was reached. After exceeding this level of impact, the Intensity of Use remained unchanged. These results indicate the overall sensitivity of Cervus movement expression to human activity and suggest a limitation of plastic responses under high human pressure, despite the species also occurring in human-dominated landscapes. Our work represents the first comparison of metric-based movement expression across widely distributed populations of a deer genus, contributing to the understanding and prediction of animals' responses to human activity.

Abstract

Human–wildlife conflicts sometimes involve bold animals that do not fear humans and their activities. Such behaviour is detrimental to both wildlife and people and may lead to conflicts, which can be especially serious for large carnivores. Like most wildlife, these species have adapted to live in highly humanized landscapes by adopting human avoidance behaviours. However, bold individuals exist, which represent a main cause of conflicts, public fear and negative attitudes, that greatly influence management and conservation actions. Although costly decisions are constantly made to deal with such individuals, evidence-based knowledge of their behaviour, that is how and when they move, especially in relation to human activities, is lacking. We analysed telemetry data of brown bears (Ursus arctos) that were GPS-collared across Slovenia and Trentino (Italy) to explore spatial behaviour and rhythms of activity of bears that were identified as bold by managers and to assess if and how their behaviour differs from that of their ‘non-bold’ conspecifics (hereafter, control individuals). Because other factors such as sex and age of the bear, season, daytime and region may affect behaviour, we also included these variables in our analyses. On one hand, bold bears were more active at the daytime and used open areas considerably more often than control bears. On the other hand, although differences in distance to settlements and roads, movement rates and daily home ranges were also found, they were not as pronounced as expected. Instead, other factors were found to affect bear behaviour and, most importantly, we found strong inter-individual differences in all behaviours. Such results suggest that, although bold bears have some behavioural attributes in common that distinguish them from control bears, each individual differs from one another. Abstract

The superconducting solenoid magnet for the GEM detector poses unusual fabrication and handling challenges because of its extraordinary size. It will be more than 30% larger in diameter than the largest existing particle detector coils. Each of the two coil elements that compose the air-core solenoid, will be about 19 meters in diameter and 15 meters long. Major components weighing as much as 1500 Mg must be transported and manipulated at the Interaction Region 5 (IR5) fabrication site of the SSC Laboratory as the magnets are fabricated. Because of their large size, the magnets will be fabricated, assembled and tested at special purpose facilities at the IR5 site. The site-use plan must accommodate the fabrication of other detector components and the assembly of large flux shaping iron structures in a timely manner to allow subsequent testing and detector assembly. Each cold mass will be composed of twelve 45-Mg coil windings that are joined prior to assembly into the 19-m diam annular cryostat.

Abstract

The design of the magnet for the GEM detector at the SSC is described. It is an 18m inner diameter, 30m long superconducting solenoid, with a magnetic field of 0.8T. The basic solenoidal field is shaped by large ferromagnetic cones, to improve detector performance in the ends of the solenoid. Because of the system's large size and mass, field-fabrication on-site at the SSC is required. The challenges in this process, together with the large stored energy of the system, 2.5 GJ, have lead to novel design choices in several areas, including the conductor. The design of the conductor, cold mass, vacuum vessel, cold mass supports, thermal shields, forward field shapers, and auxiliary systems are described.

Abstract

The Gammas, Electrons and Muons detector magnet is a key component of the Superconducting Super Collider accelerator. Its features include a solenoid coil made of aluminum-sheathed cable-in-conduit conductors for an operating current of 50 kA. Designed for on-site winding and assembly, it provides a magnetic field of 0.8 T and stores 2.5 GJ of energy. The magnet also employs a natural thermosiphon loop for cooling by thermal radiation.

22. A multi-taxa approach in mountain ecosystem: a shared protocol between 6 Italian Parks

Abstract

Elevational gradients are natural laboratories to study species diversity and community level responses along patterns of environmental variation. Understanding how multiple contrasting taxa respond to elevation along the same gradient, as well as how the same taxa respond to different elevational gradients, is still an important and urgent task in conservation biology. Protected areas play a key role in reducing losses of biological diversity as climate and land-uses change (KHAROUBA & KERR 2010). For these reasons, in 2006-2007 Gran Paradiso National Park (GPNP) developed a monitoring scheme to study animal biodiversity in mountain ecosystems along altitudinal gradients and to set the basis for the development of an historical dataset, focused on multi-taxa community data. The protocol will be repeated every 5 years (2 years monitoring - 4 years stop) in order to analyse variation through space and time. Main objectives are: - to measure the biodiversity status, describing animal biodiversity along altitudinal gradients. This is fundamental for creating a baseline against which to identify future changes and for planning highly focused conservation actions; - to forecast the biodiversity status, for estimating the risk of biodiversity loss, also through the application of environmental change scenarios. This will allow to identify the threshold beyond which the risk of biodiversity loss will be extremely elevated and to identify potential 'vulnerability and safety'. Led by GPNP, in 2007-2008, the project was extended to two other protected areas in the NW Italian Alps (Orsiera-Rocciavré Natural Park and Veglia Devero Natural Park), representing the first attempt to develop a protocol for long-term monitoring of multiple taxa in the Italian Alps. As planned, in the years 2012-2013, the 3 protected areas carried out the first repetition of the sampling activities. Moreover, in 2013-2014, 3 more Italian National Parks (Dolomiti Bellunesi NP, Stelvio NP, Val Grande NP), located in the Alps, started the same monitoring project. Currently, 6 Italian Parks, all located in the Alpine Region and covering its natural variability, are sharing a common protocol to study animal biodiversity in mountain ecosystems.

Abstract

Animal movement is fundamental for ecosystem functioning and species survival, yet the effects of the anthropogenic footprint on animal movements have not been estimated across species. Using a unique GPS-tracking database of 803 individuals across 57 species, we found that movements of mammals in areas with a comparatively high human footprint were on average one-half to one-third the extent of their movements in areas with a low human footprint.We attribute this reduction to behavioral changes of individual animals and to the exclusion of species with long-range movements from areas with higher human impact. Global loss of vagility alters a key ecological trait of animals that affects not only population persistence but also ecosystem processes such as predator-prey interactions, nutrient cycling, and disease transmission.

Abstract

Stress impacts negatively on plant growth and crop productivity, causing extensive losses to agricultural production worldwide. Throughout their life, plants are often confronted with multiple types of stress that affect overall cellular energy status and activate energy-saving responses. The resulting low energy syndrome (LES) includes transcriptional, translational, and metabolic reprogramming and is essential for stress adaptation. The conserved kinases sucrose-non-fermenting-1-related protein kinase-1 (SnRK1) and target of rapamycin (TOR) play central roles in the regulation of LES in response to stress conditions, affecting cellular processes and leading to growth arrest and metabolic reprogramming. We review the current understanding of how TOR and SnRK1 are involved in regulating the response of plants to low energy conditions. The central role in the regulation of cellular processes, the reprogramming of metabolism, and the phenotypic consequences of these two kinases will be discussed in light of current knowledge and potential future developments.
