Understanding the impacts of multi-hazard risk in urban areas is a fundamental step towards the adoption of resilience-enhancement and disaster prevention strategies, underpinning institutional adjustments aimed at improving the capacity of the authorities and stakeholders to manage risk. Within this framework, the work presented in this paper seeks to identify and analyze a set of exposure and buildings’ physical vulnerability indicators to be used as input to a parametric-based seismic vulnerability assessment methodology for the unreinforced masonry (URM) building stock of Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA). For this approach, data from the 2011 Census survey are used to define the parameters describing the building’s physical vulnerability and characterise the level of exposure in the study area. These results are then combined with the hazard component into a GIS tool. Seismic vulnerability results are presented for the URM building stock in LMA, and a more detailed analysis is conducted for the building stock of Setúbal municipality. Finally, risk outputs are presented and briefly discussed. Ultimately, understanding the impact and extent of multi-hazards can help prioritize resilience-increasing actions and disaster prevention measures to mitigate and manage natural hazards.

Abstract Introduction Neuroimaging studies have shown callosal abnormalities among maltreated subjects, but little is known about the functional and neurobiological correlates of these supposed developmental alterations. The aim of this study was to investigate childhood maltreatment (CM), neurocognitive functioning, cortisol levels, and corpus callosum (CC) integrity among adolescents. Methods One hundred and seven subjects underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with voxel‐based diffusion‐tensor imaging (DTI) and the Crossed Finger Localization Test (CFLT). Psychopathology was investigated with the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (K‐SADS‐PL); CM was detailed by the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), and salivary cortisol levels were measured by immunoassay. The combined action of waves, surges and tides can cause flooding, erosion and dune and structure overtopping in many coastal regions. Addressing emergency and risk management in these areas require a combination of targeted campaigns and real-time data that measure all phenomena at stake and can be used to develop comprehensive monitoring platforms. These monitoring platforms can support the development of prediction tools that address all hazards in an integrated way. Herein, we present a methodology focused on multi-hazard coastal alert and risk, and its implementation in a tailored WebGIS platform. The MOSAIC platform offers a one-stop-shop capacity to access in-situ and remote sensing data, and hydrodynamic and morphodynamic predictions, supported by numerical models: SCHISM and XBeach. Information is structured on a local observatory scale, with regional forcings available for the correct interpretation of local hazards effects. This implementation can be further applied and extended to other coastal zones. The MOSAIC platform also provides access to a detailed database of past hazardous events, organized along several risk indicators, for the western coast of Portugal. The combination of features in the platform provides a unique repository of hazard information to support end-users for both emergency and long term risk planning actions.

This study examines the trajectories of two plurilingual, racialized academic writing faculty, presenting how we brought our Southern onto-epistemologies to curriculum, teaching, and assessment. Although plurilingualism has become a significant dimension of Canadian higher education, monolingual norms that emphasize native-like competence continue to be a mainstream discourse in many academic writing courses. Building on the recent raciolinguistic critique of the lack of discussion of racism in academic literacies discourse, we acknowledge that academic literacies continue to force plurilingual, international students into a white subject position. Acknowledging the tension between the monolingual ideal and multilingual realities, we explore how two plurilingual, non-white faculty challenge an academic writing tradition that is constructed by the white listening subject. By co-creating duoethnographic narratives that provide insight into our complex biographical journeys as cycles of becoming, our story shows how teaching academic writing is not simply teaching a skill set but also involves constant negotiation between students' and teachers' lived experiences. Through this process, we conceive of teaching academic literacies as both an ideological construct and a multisemiotic process that involves multiple histories and meaning-making resources across diverse time and place scales.

Objective: To compare results of positron emission tomography (PET) with carbon-11-labeled Pittsburgh compound B (11C-PIB) obtained with cerebellar or global brain uptake for voxel intensity normalization, describe the cortical sites with highest tracer uptake in subjects with mild Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and explore possible group differences in 11C-PIB binding to white matter. Methods: 11C-PIB PET scans were acquired from subjects with AD (n=17) and healthy elderly controls (n=19). Voxel-based analysis was performed with statistical parametric mapping (SPM). Results: Cerebellar normalization showed higher 11C-PIB uptake in the AD group relative to controls throughout the cerebral cortex, involving the lateral temporal, orbitofrontal, and superior parietal cortices. With global uptake normalization, greatest cortical binding was detected in the orbitofrontal cortex; decreased 11C-PIB uptake in white matter was found in the posterior hippocampal region, corpus callosum, pons, and internal capsule. Conclusion: The present case-control voxelwise 11C-PIB PET comparison highlighted the regional distribution of amyloid deposition in the cerebral cortex of mildly demented AD patients. Tracer uptake was highest in the orbitofrontal cortex. Decreased 11C-PIB uptake in white-matter regions in this patient population may be a marker of white-matter damage in AD.

Nevirapine (NVP) is an anti-HIV drug associated with severe hepatotoxicity and skin rashes, which raises concerns about its chronic administration. There is increasing evidence that metabolic activation to reactive electrophiles capable of reacting with bionucleophiles is likely to be involved in the initiation of these toxic responses. Phase I NVP metabolism involves oxidation of the 4-methyl substituent and the formation of phenolic derivatives that are conceivably capable of undergoing further metabolic oxidation to electrophilic quinoid species prone to react with bionucleophiles. The covalent adducts thus formed might be at the genesis of toxic responses. As part of a program aimed at evaluating the possible contribution of quinoid derivatives of Phase I phenolic NVP metabolites to the toxic responses elicited by the parent drug, we have investigated the oxidation of 2-hydroxy-NVP with dipotassium nitroso-disulfonate (Frémy’s salt), mimicking the one-electron oxidation involved in enzyme-mediated metabolic oxidations. We report herein the isolation and full structural characterization of a 1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione derivative as a major product, stemming from an unusual pyridine ring contraction.

Apresenta-se uma base de dados de desastres naturais de origem hidro-geomorfológica reportados na imprensa escrita local, para a região do Baixo Mondego, no período 1961-2010. Os resultados salientam espacialmente a relevância das inundações em espaço urbano e das cheias progressivas em espaços de interface urbano/rural, assim como os movimentos de massa associados a infraestruturas viárias. A distribuição temporal das ocorrências mostra a diminuição dos impactos por cheias progressivas, com incremento dos relacionados com cheias rápidas.

The study aims to evaluate the prevalence of actinic cheilitis among lifeguards and describe the principal predisposing factors associated with it. A sociodemographic survey was conducted to gather information on gender, age group, sun exposure, use of sunscreen, smoking history, and alcohol consumption. Additionally, a clinical examination was conducted for each patient to investigate the presence of actinic cheilitis and classify it according to severity. Eleven cases of actinic cheilitis were diagnosed in lifeguards, presenting with varying degrees of severity ranging from 1 to 4. All of the lifeguards diagnosed were male, 63.6% were over 40 years old, 54.5% were brown or black, while 45.5% were white. Factors such as smoking history (18.1%), alcohol consumption (36.3%), and lack of use of sunscreen (72.8%) were present in the lifeguards with actinic cheilitis. It is important to conduct periodic educational programs to raise awareness of the harm of chronic exposure to ultraviolet solar radiation and to encourage the daily use of hats and sunscreens. Additionally, lifeguards diagnosed with actinic cheilitis should receive regular dental follow-ups to prevent and treat the progression of the disease and enable an early diagnosis of lip cancer. This study evaluated the influence of an aqueous propolis-based solution (PROP) on gap formation and bond strength of posts bonded to root canal dentin using resin cements. Endodontically-treated bovine incisors received different irrigation protocols: 1) 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl)/17% EDTA/NaOCl; 2) saline solution (NaCl)/EDTA/0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX); 3) NaOCl/PROP/ NaOCl; 4) NaCl/PROP/CHX; 5) NaCl/PROP/NaCl. Posts were then bonded with cements: RelyX ARC; Panavia F2.0; or RelyX U200 (n=10). The specimens were cross-sectioned. Gaps were assessed and performed the push-out bond strength test. Surface roughness of dentin fragments was also evaluated. Statistical analysis was performed (5%). RelyX U200 exhibited greater gap-free interfaces. Bond strength varied as a function of cements and irrigation protocols. PROP irrigation had no negative effect on the bond strength (p>0.05). Roughness increased significantly after NaOCl/EDTA/NaOCl, but remained unaltered after PROP irrigation protocols. Propolis-based irrigation protocols do not interfere in the bonding performance of posts cemented to root canal dentin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to evaluate the potential of the hydroethanolic extract of C. pachystachya (HE) in influencing inflammatory angiogenesis and various stages of the inflammatory process. The results demonstrated that HE 5% exhibited a gradual development of angiogenic fibrovascular tissue, as evidenced by increased blood flow and hemoglobin content. Laser Doppler perfusion imaging (LDPI) revealed enhanced blood flow in both HE 2% and 5% groups. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity was comparable between HE 2% (0.599 + 0.056 OD/mg wet weight), HE 5% (0.527 + 0.031 OD/mg wet weight), and control groups (0.614 + 0.036 OD/mg wet weight). Conversely, N-acetyl-β- d -glucosaminidase (NAG) activity was significantly increased in the HE 5% group (0.974 + 0.040 OD/mg wet weight). In comparison, HE 2% (0.737 + 0.008 OD/mg wet weight) and control (0.735 + 0.045 OD/mg wet weight) groups exhibited decreased activity with no statistical difference. Furthermore, HE 5% displayed a notable increase of approximately 30% in collagen deposition. The chromatographic analysis identified the extract's chlorogenic acid and the flavonoids orientin and iso-orientin. In conclusion, HE exhibited promising results in promoting inflammatory angiogenesis, particularly at a concentration of 5%, indicating a pro-angiogenic stimulus. The extract also significantly increased macrophage infiltration and collagen production, suggesting its potential as an adjuvant for wound healing or conditions requiring augmented collagen synthesis. • HE is a Cecropia pachystachya hydroethanolic extract. • HE promotes inflammatory angiogenesis, indicating a pro-angiogenic stimulus. • HE increased macrophage infiltration and collagen production. • HE might be an adjuvant for wound healing. • HE could be helpful to conditions requiring augmented collagen synthesis. Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE) is an uncommon benign vascular tumor frequently involving the head and neck region. We report a case of a 30-year-old White female patient with an asymptomatic erythematous hyperplasic bleeding lesion in the vestibular region, extending from tooth 21 to tooth 25, and periodontal pocket in the mesiovestibular region of tooth 23. During anamnesis, the patient reported chronic use of contraceptives. Radiographic examination revealed a horizontal bone loss in the region of teeth 22 and 23. Hematologic tests were requested and revealed only mild eosinophilia. An incisional biopsy was performed, and the diagnosis was ALHE. The treatment consisted of suspension of the contraceptive, nonsurgical periodontal therapy, and application of intralesional corticosteroids. Remission of the lesion was observed in 14 days. No recurrence was observed after 8 months of follow-up. The distinction of ALHE from malignant vascular tumors is essential to avoid overtreatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
