We describe a new species of nurse-frog (Aromobatidae, Allobates) from the Amazonian forest of Loreto, Peru using morphological, acoustic and genetic data. Our phylogenetic analysis placed Allobates sieggreenae sp. nov. as the sister species of A. trilineatus, the most similar-looking species and with which it was previously confused. However, the new species has a brown dorsum, solid dark brown lateral dark stripe not fading towards groin, adult males with few and sparse melanophores over a cream background on chin, chest, and belly, dark transverse bars absent on thighs, and an advertisement call formed by a trill of single notes (in A. trilineatus dorsum dark brown, blackish brown lateral dark stripe, paler from mid-body to groin, adult males with a dark background color on chin, chest, and belly due to a dense layer of melanophores, dark transverse bar present on dorsal surface of thighs, and trills of paired notes). Allobates sieggreenae is known from two localities of Amazonian white-sand forest ecosystems east of the Ucayali River.

The outstanding biodiversity of the Guiana Shield has raised many questions about its origins and evolution. Frogs of the genera Adelastes, Otophryne and Synapturanus form an ancient lineage distributed mostly across this region. These genera display strikingly disparate morphologies and life-history traits. Notably, Synapturanus is conspicuously adapted to fossoriality and is the only genus within this group to have dispersed further into Amazonia. Moreover, morphological differences among Synapturanus species suggest different degrees of fossoriality that might be linked to their biogeographical history. Through integrative analysis of genetic, morphometric and acoustic data, we delimited 25 species in this clade, representing a fourfold increase. We found that the entire clade started to diversify ~55 Mya and Synapturanus ~30 Mya. Members of this genus probably dispersed three times out of the Guiana Shield both before and after the Pebas system, a wetland ecosystem occupying most of Western Amazonia during the Miocene. Using a three-dimensional osteological dataset, we characterized a high morphological disparity across the three genera. Within Synapturanus, we further characterized distinct phenotypes that emerged concomitantly with dispersals during the Miocene and possibly represent adaptations to different habitats, such as soils with different physical properties., Agence Nationale de la Recherche (CEBA, ref. O artigo discute a utilização da denominação “assistentes sociais” como forma de designação dos trabalhadores da assistência social, para além daqueles formados nos cursos de serviço social. O texto mostra que as fragilidades da estruturação do serviço social, como profissão, no Brasil e em diversas experiências internacionais, fazem desta atividade uma ocupação sem contornos claramente definidos. Com isso, há uma utilização por diversos agentes sociais, no mercado de trabalho, da nomenclatura “assistentes sociais”. O artigo demonstra, utilizando dados do Censo 2010 que, a partir da Classificação Brasileira de Ocupações (CBO) é possível identificar “assistentes sociais” com os mais variados perfis, tanto técnicos quanto com nível superior, todos utilizando a mesma referência ocupacional.

Embora relativamente comum entre primatas onívoros, a anurofagia ainda é pouco documentada entre espécies frugívoras. Relatamos a predação de um sapo-canoeiro (Boana boans) por um primata frugívoro de grande porte, o macaco-barrigudo (Lagothrix lagotricha cana). O evento de predação ocorreu em um fragmento de floresta ripária localizado em Cacoal, Rondônia, no sudoeste da Amazônia brasileira. Anuros podem ser um recurso alternativo vantajoso, não contestado, e de aquisição relativamente fácil para macacos-barrigudos, ajudando a suprir sua demanda por proteína, especialmente em períodos de escassez de frutos. Nosso registro expande o conhecimento sobre a história natural e os predadores do sapo-canoeiro. Although relatively common among omnivorous primates, anurophagy is still poorly documented in frugivorous species. Here we report the predation of a giant gladiator treefrog (Boana boans) by a large arboreal frugivore, the gray woolly monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha cana). The predation event occurred in a stretch of riparian forest located in a fragmented region in Cacoal, Rondônia state, in southwestern Brazilian Amazonia. Anurans can be a profitable, non-contested, and relatively easily acquired alternative resource for gray woolly monkeys, helping to fulfill their demand for protein, especially in periods of fruit scarcity. While intraspecific variation in aposematic signals can be selected for by different predatory responses, their evolution is also contingent on other processes shaping genetic variation. We evaluate the relative contributions of selection, geographic isolation, and random genetic drift to the evolution of aposematic color polymorphism in the poison frog Adelphobates galactonotus, distributed throughout eastern Brazilian Amazonia. Dorsal coloration was measured for 111 individuals and genetic data were obtained from 220 individuals at two mitochondrial genes (mtDNA) and 7963 Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs). Four color categories were described (brown, blue, yellow, orange) and our models of frog and bird visual systems indicated that each color was distinguishable for these taxa. Using outlier and correlative analyses we found no compelling genetic evidence for color being under divergent selection. A time-calibrated mtDNA tree suggests that the present distribution of dorsal coloration resulted from processes occurring during the Pleistocene. Separate phylogenies based on SNPs and mtDNA resolved the same well supported clades, each containing different colored populations. Ancestral character state analysis provided some evidence for evolutionary transitions in color type. Genetic structure was more strongly associated with geographic features, than color category, suggesting that the distribution of color is explained by localized processes. Evidence for geographic isolation together with estimates of low effective population size implicates drift as playing a key role in color diversification. Our results highlight the relevance of considering the neutral processes involved with the evolution of traits with important fitness consequences.

Anurans emit advertisement calls with the purpose of attracting mates and repelling conspecific competitors. The evolution of call traits is expected to be associated with the evolution of anatomical and behavioural traits due to the physics of call emission and transmission. The evolution of vocalizations might imply trade-offs with other energetically costly behaviours, such as parental care. Here, we investigated the association between body size, calling site, parental care and call properties (call duration, number of notes, peak frequency, frequency bandwidth and call structure) of the advertisement calls of glassfrogs (Centrolenidae)-a family of Neotropical, leaf-dwelling anurans-using phylogenetic comparative methods. We also explored the tempo and mode of evolution of these traits and compared them with those of three morphological traits associated with body size, locomotion and feeding. We generated and compiled acoustic data for 72 glassfrog species (46% of total species richness), including representatives of all genera. We found that almost all acoustic traits have significant, but generally modest, phylogenetic signal. Peak frequency of calls is significantly associated with body size, whereas call structure is significantly associated with calling site and paternal care. Thus, the evolution of body size, calling site and paternal care could constrain call evolution. The estimated disparity of acoustic traits was larger than that of morphological traits and the peak in disparity of acoustic traits generally occurred later in the evolution of glassfrogs, indicating a historically recent outset of the acoustic divergence in this clade.

The new species was collected from the Japurá River basin in northwestern Brazilian Amazonia and is distinguished from all congeners by the combination of large snout-vent length (SVL), toe tips unexpanded, presence of antebrachial tubercle on underside of forearm, and by a multi-note advertisement call composed of non-pulsed notes. This new species is part of the A. lutzi clade together with a candidate new species known as Adenomera sp. P and A. lutzi. The three species have the largest SVL in the genus. The presence of toe tips fully expanded and a single-note advertisement call distinguish A. lutzi from the new species. Acoustic and morphological data are still required to assess the taxonomic identity of Adenomera sp. P. Our new species of Adenomera is the third anuran species described from the Solimões-Japurá interfluve. This flags this poorly known region of lowland forests as an important area of species richness in northwestern Amazonia. The multifaceted ability to produce, transmit, receive, and respond to acoustic signals is widespread in animals and forms the basis of the interdisciplinary science of bioacoustics. Bioacoustics research methods, including sound recording and playback experiments, are applicable in cognitive research that centers around the processing of information from the acoustic environment. We provide an overview of bioacoustics techniques in the context of cognitive studies and make the case for the importance of bioacoustics in the study of cognition by outlining some of the major cognitive processes in which acoustic signals are involved. We also describe key considerations associated with the recording of sound and its use in cognitive applications. Based on these considerations, we provide a set of recommendations for best practices in the recording and use of acoustic signals in cognitive studies. Our aim is to demonstrate that acoustic recordings and stimuli are valuable tools for cognitive researchers when used appropriately. In doing so, we hope to stimulate opportunities for innovative cognitive research that incorporates robust recording protocols. Objectives We investigated the factors associated with discrepancies between patients' and caregivers' ratings about patients' general quality of life (QoL) and about the domains of Quality of Life in Alzheimer's disease (QoL-AD) Scale at baseline and 12 months. Methods This was a longitudinal study that comprised 114 outpatients with AD and their caregivers. Patients were assessed with the QoL-AD, Mini-mental State Examination, Assessment Scale of Psychosocial Impact of the Diagnosis of Dementia, Cornell Scale for Depression, Functional Activities Questionnaire, and Neuropsychiatric Inventory, and Clinical Dementia Rating Scale. Caregivers answered the QoL-AD, Zarit Burden Interview and Sociodemographic Questionnaire. Results Linear regression analyses indicated that the factors associated with discrepancies of patients' and caregivers' ratings of patients' QoL-AD were impaired awareness and caregiver burden at baseline and impaired awareness at 12 months. Moreover, the factor associated with discrepancies in the domain memory was impaired awareness and in the domain ability to do chores, impaired awareness and functional deficit. Conclusions The discrepancies between patients and caregivers were related to awareness and caregiver burden at baseline and to awareness at 12 months. These results raise questions regarding the subjective nature of QoL and the validity of patients' evaluation of their own QoL.

The study of animal sound signals can be useful in assisting conservation strategies. Understanding the vocal repertoires of endangered species and the behavioral contexts in which they are given is relevant for monitoring protocols, such as those based on automated sound recordings. The pied tamarin (Saguinus bicolor) is at risk of extinction because of deforestation and urban growth in its restricted geographic range. Between 2012 and 2015 we studied the vocal repertoire of the species and the contexts in which different signals are emitted. We made focal recordings of eight free-living groups, two rescued individuals, and one temporarily captive group of pied tamarins in Manaus, central Brazilian Amazonia. From the 766 sounds analyzed we identified 12 distinct signals within the range of 2–11 kHz. Most signals were emitted during resting or locomotion. Less frequently emitted signals were associated with intergroup agonistic interactions, foraging, and infant-exclusive vocalizations. These results increased the known vocal repertoire of the pied tamarin providing more reliable baseline data for monitoring the species by means of automated or focal sound recordings.

Predation risk is allegedly reduced in Batesian and Mullerian mimics, because their coloration resembles the conspicuous coloration of unpalatable prey. The efficacy of mimicry is thought to be affected by variation in the unpalatability of prey, the conspicuousness of the signals, and the visual system of predators that see them. Many frog species exhibit small colorful patches contrasting against an otherwise dark body. By measuring toxicity and color reflectance in a geographically variable frog species and the syntopic toxic species, we tested whether unpalatability was correlated with between-species color resemblance and whether resemblance was highest for the most conspicuous components of coloration pattern. Heterospecific resemblance in colorful patches was highest between species at the same locality, but unrelated to concomitant variation in toxicity. Surprisingly, resemblance was lower for the conspicuous femoral patches compared to the inconspicuous dorsum. By building visual models, we further tested whether resemblance was affected by the visual system of model predators. As predicted, mimic-model resemblance was higher under the visual system of simulated predators compared to no visual system at all. Our results indicate that femoral patches are aposematic signals and support a role of mimicry in driving phenotypic divergence or mimetic radiation between localities.

We describe a new species of nurse-frog (Aromobatidae, Allobates) from Floresta Nacional de Carajás, southeastern Brazilian Amazonia. Allobates carajas sp. nov. is distinguished from similar congeneric species by the combination of the following characters: body-size range (snout-to-vent length 16.5–19.1 mm), dorsal color pattern with a dark brown hourglass-shaped mark, by the absence of a pale dorsolateral stripe and presence of a pale ventrolateral stripe, absence of a pale paracloacal mark, by overall bright yellow ventral colors of live male and female specimens, and by the posterior labium of tadpoles, with a single row of pyramidal papillae medially. The advertisement call of the new species is highly variable, with four possible temporal arrangements of notes (continuous emission of notes separated by regular silent intervals, continuous emission of notes separated by irregular silent intervals, emission of discrete note trills, and sporadic emission of single notes). Duration of notes range between 0.020–0.060 s, and the dominant frequency of notes range from 4.75 to 5.38 kHz. The new species is currently known only from forested habitats within Floresta Nacional de Carajás.

We describe and name the second species of Phyzelaphryne (Brachycephaloidea, Eleutherodactylidae), from northwestern Brazilian Amazonia. Phyzelaphryne nimio sp. nov. is distinguished from its only congener, Phyzelaphryne miriamae, by its smaller body size and the anatomy of the carpal and metacarpal regions, with relatively larger (sometimes fused) supernumerary carpal and metacarpal tubercles. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on fragments of the mitochondrial genes 16S rRNA and COI suggest that the currently known distribution of the species is restricted to its type locality and other areas within Estação Ecológica Juami-Japurá, state of Amazonas, Brazil. Based on molecular, morphological and bioacoustic evidence, we assigned other specimens recently collected in Parque Nacional do Jaú, state of Amazonas, Brazil, to P. miriamae, extending the species’ known geographic distribution north of the Amazon River.

To test the hypothesis that subtle differences in abiotic requirements can result in almost total spatial segregation, we sampled two species of diurnal frogs, Atelopus spumarius and Allobates sumtuosus, in a primary forest reserve in central Brazilian Amazonia. We conducted visual and acoustic surveys on three occasions over 2 months, in 40 streamside (riparian) plots distributed throughout the reserve's two major drainage basins, using a grid system that covers 64 km2. On average, drainages differed in the pH of stream water and the number of connected and isolated streamside pools. Differences in abiotic characteristics of drainages were associated with the spatial distribution of frog species. The occurrence and density of Allobates sumtuosus was negatively related to stream pH and discharge and positively related to the number of isolated pools in plots. The occurrence and density of Atelopus spumarius was associated with streams with high discharge and pH near neutral. These results indicate that although very large reserves will probably contain sufficient landscape heterogeneity to accommodate different species of diurnal frogs, due to strongly patchy distributions, in situ studies using fine-scale species-distribution models will be necessary to assess the adequacy of small reserves in Amazonia that cover hundreds of square kilometers or less for the conservation of some anuran species.

Despite developments in panic disorder (PD) research, a significant percentage of patients do not benefit from conventional treatments. Interpersonal factors have been identified as potential predictors of treatment failures. We aimed to evaluate assertiveness in a sample of patients with PD and its implications for treatment. Forty-six symptomatic patients with PD and 46 college students responded to assessment scales regarding assertiveness and clinical data. Seventy-five percent of the patients had a secondary diagnosis of agoraphobia. We found that the PD group was characterized as nonassertive and slightly less assertive than control subjects. Furthermore, the deficit in the level of assertiveness correlated with the severity of the PD. The diagnosis of agoraphobia was correlated with unassertiveness (p < 0.05). Agoraphobia predisposes individuals to dependency and insecurity about their ability to overcome anxiogenic situations. These data demonstrate the importance of managing assertiveness in patients with PD accompanied by agoraphobia.

Environmental change may alter the communication systems of birds by imposing shifts in their acoustic signals. In tropical forests, vocally active species usually avoid overlapping signals in acoustic space by calling within narrow frequency ranges, whereas in forest islands a less saturated acoustic space may allow variation in acoustic signals. Some signals are also adapted to optimize its propagation in the prevailing habitat. Despite a growing understanding of what drives acoustic variation, it is unclear if human-induced insularization of natural landscapes can unleash alterations in avian communication systems. We investigated the variability of acoustic signal properties in 2 suboscines birds (Lipaugus vociferans and Tyranneutes virescens) in islands within an artificial lake created by the damming of the Uatuma River, in Brazilian Amazonia. We tested if signal variability was related to variation in acoustic community proxies (island area and isolation), and vegetation structure by surveying 13 variable-sized forest sites and 2 mainland continuous forest sites. Bandwidth variation in L. vociferans songs was related to island area and isolation (N = 67 inds), but these relationships were not observed in T. virescens songs (N = 69 inds). Additionally, the lowest and peak frequencies of songs of both species were higher in islands with greater tree basal area. In both species, temporal properties of songs were not associated with variation in island characteristics. Our study suggests that land-use changes may lead to alterations in particular traits of acoustic signals for species for which songs are innate.

We describe a new species of nurse-frog (Aromobatidae, Allobates) from northwestern Brazilian Amazon. Allobates juami sp. nov. is distinguished from similar congeneric species by the combination of the following characters: body-size range (snout-to-vent length 17.5–18.5 mm), lack of dark pigments on ventral surfaces of male specimens, dorsal color pattern (predominantly solid dark brown, but conspicuously light brown over snout and urostyle regions), presence of conspicuous pale dorsolateral and ventrolateral stripes, and presence of a diffuse pale paracloacal mark. The advertisement call of the new species lasts 2.5–5.1 s, contains 60–73 short notes (trills), and is emitted at an average rate of 13 notes per second within trills. Duration of silent intervals between notes ranges between 0.020–0.050 s, and the peak frequency of notes ranges from 4.59 to 5.47 kHz. The new species is currently known only from the type locality at Estação Ecológica Juami-Japurá (1.96455° S, 67.93579° W; ~ 87 m a.s.l.).

A large body of evidence highlights the social cognitive impairment in neurodegenerative diseases such Alzheimer disease (AD). This study investigated the relationship among social and emotional functioning (SEF), awareness of disease, and other clinical aspects in people with AD (PwAD). A consecutive series of 50 people with mild to moderate AD and their 50 family caregivers were assessed. There was a significant difference between self-rated SEF and informant-rated SEF. In 56% of PwAD, self-rated SEF is lower than informant-rated SEF. People with AD mostly presented with mildly impaired awareness of the disease (56%), 20% had moderately impaired awareness of the disease, and 6% were unaware of the disease. The multivariate linear regression showed that informant-rated SEF was related to the social functioning, and relationships, domains of awareness of disease, and the PwAD informant-rated quality of life. The relationship between SEF and awareness of social functioning and relationship domain shows that they are comprised of judgments related to perceptions about oneself, values, and beliefs qualitatively different from awareness of memory or functionality, which can be directly observed.

Biogeographical history and current ecological interactions have usually been addressed separately to explain the spatial distribution of patterns of biodiversity. In this study, we evaluated the integrated effects of biogeographical and environmental factors in structuring the diurnal amphibian anuran assemblages of the upper Madeira River, southwestern Amazonia. We used a sampling design involving 98 standardized units, distributed across seven locations covering both banks of the river's course in the state of Rondonia, Brazil. We conducted searches for frogs in three campaigns between February 2010 and February 2011, aiming to: (1) evaluate the effect of the Madeira River as a biogeographic barrier at the species-assemblage level, and (2) test the influence of seven environmental variables (vegetation structure, vegetation cover, soil nutrients, soil structure, slope, elevation, and distance from the river bank) on the spatial structure of the frog assemblages, separately on each riverbank. Thirteen species of diurnal frogs were recorded, six of which were restricted to one of the river margins. Multivariate analysis of variance indicated a significant effect of the river as a barrier. Multiple regression analyses suggested that the environmental variables structuring frog assemblages differ on either side of the river. We found that both historical elements (on a regional scale) and environmental factors (at a local scale) shaped the occurrence and distribution of frog species in the study area.

Aposematic colouration deters visually oriented predators because conspicuous signals are easier to detect and associate with unpalatability. Consequently, brightly coloured prey that are novel are predicted to be preyed on more than those with bright but typical colours. Here we evaluated whether predatory bias is associated with the colour differences observed at two different localities for a large, conspicuously coloured and poisonous Amazonian frog, Adelphobates galactonotus. At each locality predation experiments were carried out using frog models of two naturally occurring colours of the study species (blue and orange) and a control (brown). We found no evidence that novel colours were more vulnerable to predation than local colours. These results do not therefore support our hypothesis that predatory bias explains the geographic variation of colour in A. galactonotus.

Awareness of disease can be compromised to some degree in a proportion of people with dementia, with evident differences across domains. We designed this study to determine the factors associated with the impairment of awareness over a period of time. Using a longitudinal design, 69 people with mild Alzheimer's disease and their family caregivers completed the Assessment Scale of Psychosocial Impact of the Diagnosis of Dementia, the Quality of Life in Alzheimer's Disease Scale, the Mini-Mental State Examination, the Clinical Dementia Rating Scale, the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia, the Pfeffer Functional Activities Questionnaire, the Neuropsychiatric Inventory, and the Zarit Burden Interview. Univariate and logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the contribution of the various factors. The level of awareness of disease was significantly lower (p ≤ 0.001) between baseline and at follow up. At follow up, there was no change in the level of awareness of disease in 61.8%, whereas 25.4% worsened. However, the level of awareness improved in 12.3%. Logistic regression demonstrated that functional deficits (OR = 1.12, 95% CI: (1.03-1.22), p ≤ 0.01), and caregivers' quality of life (OR = 0.83, 95% CI: (0.70-0.98), p ≤ 0.05) were a significant predictor of impaired awareness of disease. The results confirmed that awareness and cognition are relatively independent, and showed that in people with mild dementia, unawareness is mainly manifested by poor recognition of changes in the activities of daily living, and decrease in quality of life.

The brilliant-thighed frog [Allobates femoralis (Boulenger, 1884)] is distributed across the Amazon basin and aggregates several allopatric evolutionary lineages, some of which present variation in their advertisement calls. In 2009, an unregistered call phenotype was discovered in the region of Altamira and Vitória do Xingu, State of Pará, Brazil, where males emit advertisement calls formed by six notes, differing from the typical four-note calls described for other A. femoralis populations. In this study, we describe in detail these untypical calls. Additionally, we test whether the aggressive responses of males of a 4-note reference population (Reserva Ducke - RFAD, in Manaus, States of Amazonas) is differential towards the 6-note calls of males recorded in Altamira (Pará State), and towards 4-note calls recorded in one location at the Tapajós-Xingu interfluve (Belterra, Pará State), and in RFAD. Playback experiments were conducted between 2011-2012, and used standardized stimuli produced from natural call recordings. A total of 30 independent experiments were conducted, 10 for each stimuli class. We measured the phonotaxis of focal males in relation to the loudspeaker, considering the time to orientation and the time to approach the loudspeaker. We found that not all A. femoralis males at RFAD promptly recognize calls from males recorded in Altamira. However, when considering only males who approached the loudspeaker, differences in aggressive reactions were not seen between stimuli classes. Our findings show that the ability to recognize calls from Altamira as belonging to co-specific males is not universal among males at RFAD. The new A. femoralis phenotype occurs in areas potentially impacted by the Belo Monte hydroelectric complex and complementary studies indicate that no gene flow exists between this group and A. femoralis from adjacent regions. We describe Allobates grillisimilis from the northwestern region of the Rio Madeira—Rio Tapajos interfluve, state of Am-azonas, Brazil. The new taxon is characterized by its small snout-to-vent length (12.8–16.0 mm, the smallest among known Allobates ), by the color pattern of adults (surfaces of throat, chest and abdomen unpigmented), by morphological traits of larvae (a single row of very elongate papillae on posterior labium), and by its distinctive advertisement call, formed by trills of short pulses emitted in a variable number. We also provide notes on reproductive behavior of the new species.

Predation risk is allegedly reduced in Batesian and Müllerian mimics, because their coloration resembles the conspicuous coloration of unpalatable prey. The efficacy of mimicry is thought to be affected by variation in the unpalatability of prey, the conspicuousness of the signals, and the visual system of predators that see them. Many frog species exhibit small colorful patches contrasting against an otherwise dark body. By measuring toxicity and color reflectance in a geographically variable frog species and the syntopic toxic species, we tested whether unpalatability was correlated with between-species color resemblance and whether resemblance was highest for the most conspicuous components of coloration pattern. Heterospecific resemblance in colorful patches was highest between species at the same locality, but unrelated to concomitant variation in toxicity. Surprisingly, resemblance was lower for the conspicuous femoral patches compared to the inconspicuous dorsum. By building visual models, we further tested whether resemblance was affected by the visual system of model predators. As predicted, mimic-model resemblance was higher under the visual system of simulated predators compared to no visual system at all. Our results indicate that femoral patches are aposematic signals and support a role of mimicry in driving phenotypic divergence or mimetic radiation between localities.

I describe the seventh species of nurse-frog (Allobates) from the Madeira River basin in Brazilian Amazonia. The new species is distinguished from similar congeneric species by its small body size (snout-to-vent length ranging between 14.0-14.7 mm in adult males and between 14.7-14.9 mm in adult females), by the absence of dark brown regular shapes (e.g. hourglass, "X" or polygon-like marks) on the dorsum, by the absence of transverse dark bars on the dorsal surface of the thigh, and by the light gray to white ventral surfaces, light to dark gray only on throat in live male and female specimens. Males have a distinctive advertisement call characterized by the emission of long (7-11 s) trills of short notes (0.04 s in average) with dominant frequency at 5.9-6.3 kHz and emission rate ranging between 6.7-8.7 notes/s. DNA barcode analyses based on a fragment of the 16S rDNA mitochondrial gene provides additional support to the recognition of the new taxon, which is probably distributed on the east riverbank of the Madeira River, in the interfluve between the Aripuanã and Ji-Paraná rivers.

Natural hybridization between allopatric species following secondary contact has been poorly documented for Neotropical anurans inhabiting the Amazonian lowlands. We conducted a genetic survey across a contact zone between two species of litter frogs, Allobates hodli and Allobates femoralis (family Dendrobatidae), located on the left riverbank of the upper Madeira River, State of Rondonia, Brazil. We obtained tissue samples from 11 sampling sites on both riverbanks, covering approximately a 400 km long transect. We evaluated the genetic relationships between samples using haplotype networks and a distance-based phylogenetic tree obtained from a dataset of 16S rRNA mtDNA sequences. Estimates of genetic diversity, population structure, and the identification of sites where genetic admixture occurred were carried out by means of frequency-based methods and Bayesian inference on mtDNA and a set of four microsatellite loci, including samples collected throughout the study area. A reduced dataset including only microsatellite loci genotyped from samples on the left riverbank was applied in assignment tests for detecting levels of admixture at the contact zone and adjacent sampling sites, and for detecting and quantifying hybrid individuals. Our results suggest that genetic introgression between A. hodli and A. femoralis is restricted to the core area of the contact zone, where potential hybrids are less frequent than parental genotypes. Effects on the genetic variability of adjacent populations are only detected at sites located 1.5 km downstream and upstream of the core area, suggesting the existence of selection against hybrids, possibly mediated by postzygotic isolation mechanisms. The contact zone between A. femoralis and A. hodli is the first well delimited suture line between anuran species ever documented in the Brazilian Amazon. The settlement of two dams along the upper Madeira River poses an immediate threat to the gene flow and hybridization balance observed between the populations studied. Our results provided guidelines for a current monitoring program, aiming at the impacts of dams on this evolutionary system’s dynamics.

O artigo discute o direito à assistência religiosa dos adolescentes privados de liberdade no estado Rio de Janeiro. A partir da identificação de várias formas de violação desse direito no sistema socioeducativo fluminense, foi organizada uma pesquisa com os atores do sistema judiciário, a saber: juízes, defensores públicos, promotores e um representante do Conselho Estadual de Direitos da Criança e do Adolescente. O foco da pesquisa foi identificar a concepção de assistência religiosa desses atores e verificar se os mesmos tinham domínio da legislação. A pesquisa foi realizada em 2010 e demonstrou que os membros do judiciário contatados se encontravam pouco preparados para lidar com o direito à assistência religiosa dos adolescentes. Abstract: The article discusses the youth offenders' right to religious assistance. From the identification of many forms of violation of this right in socio-educational system of Rio de Janeiro, it was organized a survey of the actors in the judicial system, namely: judges, advocates, prosecutors and a representative of the State Board of Children and Youth Rights. The focus of the research was to identify the concept of religious assistance from these actors and if they acknowledge the legislation. The survey was conducted in 2010 and demonstrated that members of the judiciary are unprepared to deal with the right of religious assistance from youth offenders.

The call of the pan-Amazonian frog Allobates femoralis shows wide geographical variation, and males show a stereotyped and conspicuous phonotactic response to playback of conspecific calls. We evaluated the capacity of males of A. femoralis and a closely related species A. hodli to respond aggressively to natural conspecific and heterospecific calls varying in number of notes, by means of field playback experiments performed at two sites in the Brazilian Amazon. The first site, Cachoeira do Jirau (Porto Velho, Rondonia), is a parapatric contact zone between A. femoralis that use 4-note calls, and A. hodli with 2-note calls, where we performed cross-playbacks in both focal populations. The second site, the Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke (Manaus, Amazonas), contained only A. femoralis with 4-note calls. There, we broadcast natural stimuli of 2-note A. hodli, 3-note and 4-note A. femoralis, and 6-note A. myersi. We found that the phonotactic behaviour of A. femoralis and A. hodli males did not differ toward conspecific and heterospecific stimuli, even in parapatry. Our results indicated that the evolutionary rates of call design and call perception are different, because the geographical variation in calls was not accompanied by variation in the males' aggressive behaviour.

Em nenhum outro país quanto o Brasil há um movimento espírita tão demograficamente abrangente e também rico em termos de interpretações do chamado tríplice aspecto do espiritismo: filosofia, ciência e religião. Desde sua implantação na década de 1860, há um segmento que valoriza bastante sua dimensão intelectualista, filosófica e científica, de modo a haver organizações e ativistas com posturas que chegam a ser bastante cientificistas. Porém a ênfase no aspecto religioso, historicamente, sobressaiu e prepondera no espiritismo nacional, havendo duas destacadas facetas dela. Uma paulista, que foi iniciada pelo militar orientalista Edgard Armond, e a outra mineira, protagonizada pelo médium Chico Xavier e seu mentor espiritual Emmanuel. Ambas estimulam o estudo bíblico do Novo Testamento, embora esta proponha mais aprofundamento do que aquela, sendo que ambas enfatizam a identidade cristã do espiritismo. Este artigo discute tais feições do movimento espírita brasileiro.

We studied patterns of call acoustics and external morphological differentiation in populations of the dart-poison frog Allobates femoralis occurring in forested areas along a 250-km stretch of the upper Madeira River, Brazil. Multivariate analyses of variance using principal components representing shared acoustic and morphological parameters distinguished three groups in relation to call structure and external morphology: (1) populations belonging to a two-note call morphotype; (2) populations with four-note calls inhabiting the left riverbank; and (3) populations with four-note calls inhabiting the right riverbank. Our results report a case of Amazonian anuran diversity hidden by current taxonomy and provide evidence for the upper Madeira River being a boundary between distinct populations of A. femoralis, and suggest a new taxonomic interpretation for these groups. Samples that did not fit into the general differentiation pattern and the existence of a well-defined contact zone between two morphotypes on the left riverbank indicate that mechanisms complementary to river-barrier hypotheses are necessary to explain the phenotypic differentiation between populations. Our study shows that at least one anuran species shows congruence between population differentiation and separation by a large Amazonian river, as documented for birds and mammals. Conservation efforts should not consider the taxon now known as A. femoralis as a homogeneous entity. There is much within-taxon variability, which can be probably explained partly by the existence of cryptic species, partly by geological barriers and part of which currently has no obvious explanation.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the visual results, refractive predictability, rotational stability, and spectacle independence of patients who had cataract surgery with implantation of a diffractive multifocal toric intraocular lens (IOL) (Tecnis Multifocal Toric ZMT 150–400; Abbott Medical Optics, Santa Ana, CA). METHODS: This prospective study included 60 eyes of 30 patients with cataract and regular corneal astigmatism who had phacoemulsification with bilateral implantation of a Tecnis Multifocal Toric IOL. Over a 6-month follow-up period, the main outcome measures were uncorrected and corrected monocular and binocular distance (UDVA and DCVA), intermediate at 80 cm (UIVA and DCIVA), and near at 40 cm (UNVA and DCNVA) visual acuities, spherical equivalent (SE) refraction, residual astigmatism, rotational stability, defocus curves, contrast sensitivity, presence of photic phenomena, and use of spectacles. RESULTS: Results at 6 months showed mean UDVA of 0.07 ± 0.1 logMAR (range: 0.3 to 0.0 logMAR), mean UIVA of 0.18 ± 0.09 logMAR (range: 0.3 to −0.1 log-MAR, and mean UNVA of 0.03 ± 0.09 logMAR (range: 0.2 to −0.1 logMAR). Refractive predictability was excellent with a mean SE of 0.05 ± 0.47 diopters (D) (range: −0.75 to +1.00 D) and a mean refractive cylinder of −0.44 ± 0.49 D (range: −1.25 to 0.00). Mean rotation was 3.18° ± 3.28°. Photic phenomena were moderate or severe in 30% of patients. All patients were spectacle independent at the 6-month follow-up visit at all distances in this case series. CONCLUSIONS: The implantation of the Tecnis multifocal toric IOL in patients with cataract and corneal astigmatism provided excellent distance and near visual acuities with good intermediate visual acuity. Predictability of refractive results, rotational stability, and optical performance were excellent, allowing all patients in this series to achieve spectacle independence. We describe the fourth species of nurse-frog genus Allobates occurring in the southeastern Brazilian Amazonia. The new species is sympatric with Allobates femoralis, Allobates masniger and Allobates magnussoni, and inhabits the margins of streams in forested areas within Parque Nacional da Amazônia, on the western bank of the Tapajós River. Snout-to-vent length ranges between 14.9-16.1 mm among males and 15.6-16.5 mm among females. The species is distinguished by the light brown background color of dorsum, with irregular dark brown blotches appearing from eye level to the urostyle region. In life, ventral surfaces of males are golden yellow on throat and chest, and white to yellow on abdomen. Ventral surfaces of females are predominantly white, except for light yellow on chin. The dark brown lateral band has a diffuse lower edge ventrolaterally. Dorsal surface of thigh is cream, with a longitudinal dark brown band extending dorsally from vent to knee. Tail musculature of tadpoles is robust, bifurcating dorsally over the body and reaching about two-thirds of the body length. Advertisement calls consist predominantly of continuous pairs of notes, but other note arrangements are also emitted. Notes have ascending frequency modulation and average peak frequency ranging between 5.3-5.9 kHz. First and second notes of the same note pair are similar in amplitude, duration and frequency spectrum. Successive note pairs are split by approximately regular silent intervals (0.30-0.49 s). The species lays its eggs inside rolled or folded dead leaves on the leaf litter. Egg capsules and jelly nests are opaque.

We describe a new species of Allobates from the south of eastern Amazonia, Brazil. This species inhabits fluvial springs and the banks of small streams in terra-firme forests along the Tapajós River basin. Average snout-to-vent length is 17.78 mm (range 16.09-19.59 mm) among males and 19.50 mm (range 17.97-20.84 mm) among females. Surface of dorsum is marked by a distinct dark color pattern, with three convex areas, triangle and diamond-shaped. The species has a diffuse pale dorsolateral line (absent in some specimens), while the oblique lateral bar is defined. Dark-brown transversal stripes are present on femoral and tibial dorsal surfaces, which align with each other in live specimens when at rest. Tadpoles have short papillae on anterior (8-10 papillae on each side) and posterior labium (gt;30 papillae). Posterior labium is projected to the front, hiding posterior tooth rows. Eggs are deposited in nests on rolled or cranked dead leaves on the forest floor. Egg membranes and jelly-nests are transparent. Advertisement calls are mainly characterized by the continuous emission of single notes that might shift sporadically to note-pairs, emitted during short periods. Notes are split by regular silent intervals, with peak frequency ranging between 4273-4867 Hz.

O Espiritismo é bastante identificado no Brasil com obras assistenciais, que, por sua vez, exerceram papel importante na legitimação social desta vertente religiosa no século XX. Sociologicamente, elas constituem a materialização do princípio cristão da caridade, considerado doutrinariamente nesse meio como caminho exclusivo para a salvação. A assistência social espírita de maior porte se dá em hospitais psiquiátricos e casas de acolhimento e educação de crianças e jovens vulneráveis e deficientes. Mas ocorre também em muitos centros de culto e estudos, principalmente através da distribuição de cestas básicas e enxovais para recém-nascidos. Este artigo apresenta os resultados de duas pesquisas, sendo a primeira referente aos núcleos espíritas do Estado de Santa Catarina e a segunda sobre cinco instituições assistenciais de grande porte situadas nas cidades de São Paulo, Guarulhos, Salvador, Rio de Janeiro e Niterói.

Em 2011-2012, o Sistema Socioeducativo de Santa Catarina organizou uma pesquisa para diagnosticar a garantia dos direitos dos adolescentes em suas unidades. Foram pesquisadas 18 unidades das 24 que compoem o sistema. Os resultados apresentados sao sinalizadores do distanciamento existente entre os marcos legais e a vigencia institucional dos direitos sociais conferidos aos adolescentes. Foram construidos indices (de educacao, de saude, entre outros) para mensurar a capacidade de cada unidade cumprir o que esta estabelecido no Ecriad e no Sinase. Ao final do texto e apresentado um panorama geral do Estado, assim como, sao apresentados os resultados especificos para quatro unidades: Casas de Semiliberdade (CSL) de Florianopolis e Chapeco, Plantao de Atendimento lnicial (PAI) e o Centro de Atendimento Socioeducativo Provisorio de Criciuma.

The distribution of many vertebrate species in the Amazon basin is delimited by large rivers, which are frequently regarded as geographic barriers related with speciation and are therefore of high conservation value. Rapid development in the region includes plans to dam one of its thirteen major rivers, the Xingu. Environmental impact assessment is required for large scale development within the Brazilian portion of the Amazon Basin. However, impacts on biodiversity are only considered at the species level, and taxonomic work is far from described for many groups. In particular, anuran diversity is underestimated, in part owing to the scale of the region and, for some taxa, by morphological conservatism. Here we describe genetic and phenotypic variation in the brilliant-thighed frog, Allobates femoralis. We show that a unique genetic lineage, with a vocal repertoire distinct from that described for the species throughout its remaining geographic range, is located within the region to be directly and indirectly impacted by damming the Xingu River. Further, genetic variation within the A. femoralis group is largely structured in accordance to river systems, despite morphological conservatism. Our data add support for conservation policy to be amended to include intraspecific measures of diversity in order to more effectively conserve current biodiversity and evolutionary processes. © Pedro Ivo Simões, Adam Stow, Walter Hödl, Adolfo Amézquita, Izeni P. We describe the advertisement calls and color in life of Allobates sumtuosus (Morales 2002) based on specimens recorded and collected at its type locality in Reserva Biológica do Rio Trombetas, Brazilian Amazonia. We also improve the species diagnosis by adding information on states of characters frequently used in current Allobates taxonomy. Finally, we analyze genetic distances and the evolutionary relationships between typical A. sumtuosus and other Allobates species distributed in Brazil and along the Guiana Shield region using a fragment of the 16S rDNA mitochondrial gene. Based on this integrative analysis, we propose the synonym of Allobates spumaponens KokErnst 2007 with A. sumtuosus and provide an updated geographic distribution of the species.

Background:The validity of self-reported quality-of-life (QoL) assessments of people with dementia (PWD) is a critical issue. We designed this study to determine the non-cognitive factors that are associated with self-reported QoL and PWD QoL as rated by family caregivers.Methods:Using a cross-sectional study, we assessed QoL of 41 people with mild Alzheimer's disease (AD). The individuals with AD and their family caregivers completed the Quality of Life in Alzheimer's Disease Scale (QoL-AD), the Assessment Scale of Psychosocial Impact of the Diagnosis of Dementia (ASPIDD), the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) scale, the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD), the Pfeffer Functional Activities Questionnaire (FAQ), and the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI). Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were conducted to examine the contribution of the various cofactors.Results:We observed a significant difference (t = 3.292, p < 0.01, d = 0.727) in the QoL measures of PWD after comparing self-reported assessments with the assessments of family caregivers. Linear regression analysis demonstrated that awareness of disease was related to PWD QoL-AD scores. Both the education levels of family caregivers and the depressive symptoms in PWD were related to the family caregivers’ ratings of PWD QoL.Conclusions:The difference between self-reported QoL and family caregivers’ ratings of QoL in people with mild dementia indicated that cognitive impairment was not the primary factor that accounted for the differences in the QoL assessments. Our findings suggested that non-cognitive factors, such as awareness of disease and depressive symptoms, played an important role in the differences between the self-reported AD QoL ratings and the caregivers’ AD QoL ratings. A major implication is that discrete measures such as cognition or level of function are likely to miss important factors that influence QoL.

We describe Allobates grillisimilis from the northwestern region of the Rio Madeira-Rio Tapajós interfluve, state of Am-azonas, Brazil. The new taxon is characterized by its small snout-to-vent length (12.8-16.0 mm, the smallest among known Allobates), by the color pattern of adults (surfaces of throat, chest and abdomen unpigmented), by morphological traits of larvae (a single row of very elongate papillae on posterior labium), and by its distinctive advertisement call, formed by trills of short pulses emitted in a variable number. We also provide notes on reproductive behavior of the new species.

O artigo busca comparar a participação religiosa, cívico-política e voluntária-assistencial dos alunos de serviço social da UFRJ. Buscava-se identificar com que religiões os discentes mais se identificavam (entre católicos, espíritas, protestantes e sem religião) e se a identidade e participação religiosas favoreciam a participação nas outras duas instâncias. A pesquisa abrangeu 756 alunos, em 1999 e 2006, de todos os períodos, dos cursos diurno e noturno da Escola de Serviço Social da UFRJ. O artigo conclui que os alunos não abandonam suas crenças religiosas quando expostos a formação política. Além disso, eles demonstram ter espírito cooperativo e estão dispostos a atuarem voluntariamente nas instituições a que estão filiados.The article seeks to compare the religious, civic-political and voluntary-assistential forms of participation of UFRJ social workers students. It aims to identify the religions to which the faculty mostly identifies itself (between Catholics, Spiritists, Protestants and religiousless) and whether the religious identity and participation favor the participation in the other two instances. The research has contemplated 756 students of UFRJ Social Work School, all grades and course turns comprised, in 1999 and 2006. The article concludes that the students do not abandon their religious beliefs when they are exposed to a political background. Moreover, they seem to have a cooperative spirit and are willing to work voluntarily in the institutions to which they are affiliated.

Objectives This study investigates the factors associated with the impairment of awareness in mild dementia. Methods Using a longitudinal design, 69 people with mild Alzheimer's disease (AD), and their family caregivers were interviewed and reassessed after one year. The dyads completed the Assessment Scale of Psychosocial Impact of the Diagnosis of Dementia (ASPIDD), the Quality of Life in Alzheimer's Disease Scale (QoL-AD), the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) scale, the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD), the Pfeffer Functional Activities Questionnaire (PFAQ), the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI), and the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI). Results The level of awareness of disease presented a significant difference (p Conclusions At least in the earlier stages of dementia, it should not be assumed that awareness will inevitably decrease as dementia progresses. The results confirmed that awareness and cognition are relatively independent, and showed that in mild PwD awareness is mainly manifested by poor recognition of changes in ADLs.

Allobates sumtuosus was described by Morales (“2000” [2002]), partially based on individuals collected by R.I. Crombie and R.C. Lynn at Reserva Biológica do Rio Trombetas (REBio Trombetas - Estado do Pará, Brazil). The holotype proceeded from the same locality.
