Results highlighted differences between the Portuguese and the Cape Verdean women: 97% vs. 67% had heard about the HPV vaccine; 30% vs. 9% had been vaccinated, and 71% vs. 82% had reported a lack of medical recommendation as a major reason for not having been vaccinated. Resumo O artigo analisa indicadores de intolerância social na Europa. O objetivo é testar efeitos de moderação entre preditores individuais e contextuais num modelo de regressão para indicadores de intolerância social. O material empírico consiste nos resultados da vaga de 2008 do European Value Studies. As hipóteses foram testadas com recurso ao software HLM. Confirmou-se a existência de dois efeitos de moderação: (i) entre o sentimento de ameaça e a dimensão do habitat e (ii) entre a longevidade e o suporte à democracia. Embora o tema da tolerância social já tenha sido vastamente estudado, são poucos os trabalhos que estudam esse fenômeno numa análise multinível, e menor ainda os que testam efeitos de moderação. Sugere-se a procura por novos efeitos de moderação na explicação da intolerância social. Abstract This paper analyzes indicators of social intolerance in Europe. The aims are to test moderation effects between individual and contextual indicators in a multilevel regression model. The data consists in the results of the 2008 wave of the European Value Studies. The hypotheses were tested using HLM software. It was confirmed the existence of two moderating effects: between the feeling of threat and the dimension of the habitat; and between the longevity and the support for democracy. Although the theme of social tolerance has been widely studied, few works had study this phenomenon using multilevel analysis, and is still smaller number of studies that tested moderation effects. It is suggested the search for new effects of moderation on social intolerance predictor models.

Outflows to the Portuguese-speaking countries, although not dominant, played an important role in the growth of Portuguese emigration during the economic recession and austerity period, between 2010 and 2016. This chapter examines this migration process, considering that contemporary migration from Portugal to Angola is an example of reverse post-colonial migration within the framework of North-South movements.It presents the historical and socio-demographic background of Angola and some theoretical insights on the issue of North-South migration. The analyses of the migration process and the emigrants’ profiles rely in statistics and academic literature but especially on data gathered in a direct survey. Attention is given to indicators of integration, relations with Portugal and the post-colonial nature of the process. The profile of Portuguese in Angola shows an overrepresentation of highly skilled males over 35 years old, which migrated for professional reasons and sustain relations with Portugal through diverse transnational practices. This supports explanations for the emergence of North-South migration by appeal to economic expansion associated to the increasing insertion of several developing countries into global networks. However, the analysis fails to back up the hypothesis that Portuguese emigration to Angola is a form of reverse post-colonial migration based in ancestral return.

This article aims to identify changes in the work situation among problematic drug users (PDU) clients of an international therapeutic community located in Portugal, after the completion of treatment. In this article, we analyse these changes on the assumption that entry to the labour market is essential for effective social reintegration. To achieve our aim, we carried out a pilot study with an analysis of the administrative records of a therapeutic community and then held telephone interviews with 63 former clients. Different work-related factors were compared, with special attention being paid to the changes registered. We concluded that, after treatment, although there was greater instability, educational qualifications and the number of PDU employees with an occupation increased. There was a decrease in factory workers and an increase in administrative functions. First jobs were obtained via a more formal channel, while the most recent ones were obtained on own initiative. This leads to the conclusion that after an initial period of greater difficulties the PDU participants in this study manage to gain higher autonomy and better integration into the labour market.

A dificuldade dos ciganos em aceder e permanecer no sistema de ensino é uma questão bem vincada na sociedade portuguesa. Este artigo tem como objetivo conhecer algumas caraterísticas que diferenciam ciganos portugueses que acederam e terminaram o ensino secundário ou o ensino superior face a dois outros grupos: com escolaridade até ao 3º ciclo do ensino básico e iletrados. Para cumprir este fim recorre-se a dados do inquérito por questionário aplicado no âmbito do Estudo Nacional Sobre as Comunidades Ciganas. São tomados como domínios de análise as caraterísticas sociodemográficas, as relações de conjugalidade com não ciganos, a integração no mercado de trabalho, as relações com a escola e as atitudes face a desigualdades de género., The difficulty of Ciganos to access and stay in school is a recurring issue in the Portuguese society. This article aims to know some features that differentiate Portuguese Ciganos who have accessed and finished secondary education or higher education compared with two other groups: those with education up to the 3rd cycle of basic education and the illiterate. To fulfil this purpose we used data from the questionnaire survey of the National Study of Roma Communities. The domains of analysis assumed are as follows: social and demographic characteristics, the blood relationships with non-Ciganos, integration into the labour market, the relationship with the school and the attitudes towards gender inequalities.

A Casa da antiga Quinta de Vila Meã, na freguesia de Campanhã, no Porto, é o objecto de estudo da presente dissertação. Com centenas de anos de história, a casa que hoje se encontra, na rua do Dr. Maurício Esteves Pereira Pinto, nº 403, parece não pertencer àquele lugar. O lugar de Vila Meã, antigo sítio de remota fundação rural, hoje não se reconhece, cruzado e dissimulado por viadutos e linhas férreas de uma urbanidade contemporânea. Tendo escapado ilesa ao traçado da grande Via de Cintura Interna, a casa subsistiu, caindo logo então num esquecimento que tardou a ser quebrado. Recentemente, a Casa de Vila Meã conheceu um renascimento, acolhendo desde há cinco anos um conjunto de pessoas com projectos comunitários, promovendo um auxílio às populações carenciadas de Campanhã. Em 2015, inicia também um processo de restauro do edifício, promovido pela Junta de Freguesia de Campanhã. Será aspiração deste trabalho estudar a Casa, a antiga Quinta e o território envolvente, recuando no tempo através de breves representações da sua composição, de forma a informar um gesto de projecto que, mais do que propor uma solução definitiva para o edifício, pretende levantar hipóteses para a sua melhor integração num lugar tão incoerente e desqualificado. Com isto, finalmente, lançar ideias para novas formas de aproveitar e vivenciar o território de Campanhã, que importará hoje repensar e solucionar. The house of the ancient Farm of Vila Meã, in the parish of Campanhã, in Porto, is the object of study of the present dissertation. With hundreds of years of history, the house with the nr. 403 that is today found, in Dr. Maurício Esteves Pereira Pinto street, does not seem to belong to that place. The place of Vila Meã, ancient site of rural foundation, is today not recognizable, for being crossed and dissimulated by overpasses and railway lines of a contemporary urbanity. Having escaped unscathed to the Via de Cintura Interna highway, the house has subsisted, falling immediately into oblivion - which up until very recently was unbroken. The house of Vila Meã has recently encountered a renaissance, hosting since five years ago a group of people with communitary projects, promoting the aid to the socially needy people of the parish. Meanwhile, a process of restoration of the building has started, in 2015, promoted by the Parish Council of Campanhã. The aspiration of this work is to study the House, the ancient Farm and the surrounding territory, going back in time through brief representations of its composition, in order to inform a project that aims for more than just a definitive solution for the building, intending to bring up possibilities for its better integration in such an incoherent and disqualified environment. Then, the work makes way with new ideas to rethink and change the urban landscape of Campanhã, which urges solutions and qualification.

The coexistence of people and societies marked by ethnic, social, cultural, religious and linguistic diversity is a subject that still generates controversies in contemporary societies. The “Ciganos’ situation” is an unavoidable issue that crosses the boundaries of different European countries, which leads to controversy and ambivalence in the so-called multicultural and/or intercultural societies characterised by the principle of universalism. In Portugal, despite the social and economic transformations that have occurred, the problems of exclusion and poverty among Ciganos persist. They are still considered the poorest ethnic group, with the worst housing conditions, lest schooling and the main target of racism and discrimination. The Portuguese Ciganos are not a homogeneous community. The diversity and plurality are not always easy to grasp by the glare generated by the adoption of interpretive perspectives that are reductively linear and deterministic of the Portuguese Ciganos. For the purpose of outlining a national picture of Portuguese Ciganos, a national study was developed that combines both qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches. The central goal of this article is to present the main results obtained through a questionnaire survey carried out to Ciganos persons and to discuss the social and spatial continuities and differentiations among Ciganos in Portugal.

O principal objetivo deste artigo é avaliar a importância do regresso de emigrantes portugueses durante a década de 2001-2011, tendo em conta o volume do regresso, os perfis sociodemográficos, as variações por países de emigração e a emergência de novas formas de mobilidade. Um objetivo particular consiste em produzir uma tipologia das formas de regresso: algumas mais associadas à visão tradicional da emigração na idade ativa e regresso na fase da reforma, outras indiciadoras de movimentos de tipo diferente, com regressos mais precoces durante a vida ativa. A observação de dados recentes permite descortinar algumas das novas modalidades de emigração, incluindo uma tendência crescente para a circulação. This text’s main objective is to assess the importance of the return of Portuguese emigrants in 2001-2011, in the light of the number of people who came back, their sociodemographic profiles, the variations in the countries they came from, and the emergence of new forms of mobility. A more particular goal is to produce a typology of forms of return: some more associated with the traditional view of people emigrating when they are of working age and coming home in the retirement phase of their lives; others that suggest movements of a different type, with earlier returns while the returnee is still working. The authors also look at how an increase in complex mobility patterns can lead to a different pattern of returns. Recent data reveal some of the new mobility formats, including a growing trend towards circulation., Le principal objectif de ce texte est d’évaluer l’importance du retour des émigrés portugais au cours la décennie 2001-2011, compte tenu du nombre de retours, des profils sociodémographiques, des variations par pays d’émigration et de l’émergence de nouvelles formes de mobilité. Un objectif particulier est de produire une typologie des formes de retour: certaines plus associées à la vision traditionnelle de l’émigration à l’âge actif et du retour à l’âge de la retraite, d’autres révélant des mouvements d’un type différent, comme les retours plus précoces à l’âge actif. En outre, le développement de modèles complexes de mobilité peut donner lieu à différentes logiques de retour. Purpose – Therapeutic communities (TCs) are one of the existent social responses in helping drug users overcome addiction and pursue social reintegration. The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss the general characteristics of about 200 drug users and their addiction and those of addicts abroad treated in a TC and clinically discharged. The analysis now presented is the first empirical approach to capture social regularities and singularities that are present in these individuals’ reintegration strategies. Design/methodology/approach – The data have a ten-year range – from 1999 to 2009 – and were statically analysed. Findings – They show a group of individuals with low qualifications reflected in their professional occupation, from which family is an essential support. These data also show a significant prevalence of heroin, alcohol, cocaine and polydrug uses, highlighting the need to consider new use patterns and new synthetic substances. Originality/value – TC have been little studied, mainly in Portugal.

Dada a quantidade de estudos sobre a emigração portuguesa que foram produzidos recentemente, torna-se pertinente uma análise sistemática a alguns dos seus conteúdos. Tal análise permitirá conhecer quais os temas, épocas históricas e países mais estudados, bem como aqueles que ainda carecem de investigação. Pretende-se, com o presente artigo, efetuar uma análise bibliométrica da produção científica sobre a emigração portuguesa produzida entre 1980 e 2013. Esta análise é um dos outputs iniciais do projeto de investigação “Regresso ao futuro: a nova emigração e a relação com a sociedade portuguesa” (REMIGR), cujo objetivo principal é analisar as tendências da emigração mais recente. O trabalho que se apresenta é de caráter provisório, tendo em conta que não foram recenseadas todas as publicações existentes e que se teve como base de trabalho uma listagem em constante atualização. In Portugal, studies on discrimination against immigrants have focused almost exclusively either on the indigenous population, or on the foreign population. The former have tended to deploy quantitative and extended methodologies, while the latter studies have opted predominantly for qualitative or intensive methodologies, focusing on particular groups. There are few studies in which the immigrant population is extensively surveyed, covering its diverse origins, life trajectories, and social position in the host society.In this analysis we examine the main factors that shape the perceptions of ethnic and racial discrimination among immigrant groups living in the Oeiras municipality in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. This analysis is based on a quantitative analysis of a survey of 422 immigrants, of whom approximately half reported having been discriminated against since their arrival in Portugal. The study is focused on three main explanations related to predictive variables: sociographic, acculturation/cultural proximity, and opportunities for contact with the autochthonous population. A multivariate logistic regression demonstrates that there is a statistically significant relationship between perceived discrimination and some sociographic variables including cultural proximity, especially for Brazilians.

This chapter addresses the theme of transnationalism and return in recent Portuguese emigration, namely the flows that occurred after the turn of the century. It starts with a brief theoretical overview on those topics, which constitute two relatively neglected characteristics of Portuguese emigration. Next, based on a survey carried out in 2014–2015 to more than 6000 recent emigrants, it reveals some of the links that they maintain with their home country, as well as their plans for the future, which include settlement in the destination country, return and re-emigration. Lastly, it examines data on returning emigrants – especially those that returned between 2001 and 2011 – extracted from the 2011 Census. The evidence reveals a significant number of returns, including individuals at both working and retirement ages and at all skill levels, thus exposing the unexpected complexity of movements. The results are based on the research project “Back to the future: new emigration and links with Portuguese society” (REMIGR), which aimed to ascertain the extent and characteristics of the new emigration wave. The project included an overview of emigration and return to and from all regions of the world, as well as case studies in UK, France, Luxembourg, Angola, Mozambique and Brazil.
