Abstract

We report on chemical, biochemical and physical sensors based on whispering gallery mode resonators. We characterized the resonators, improved the mitigation of fluctuations, and developed different types of optical sensors, labelled and label-free sensors for chemical and biochemical sensing, and pressure, temperature and nanoparticle sensing.

Abstract

Polyethylenimine (PEI) is a cationic polymer able to interact with nucleic acids. Taking advantage of this property, PEI-modified functional surfaces for the capture of DNA were developed and characterized with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) during every step of the preparation. The XPS demonstrated the presence of PEI on the functional surfaces, while the density of PEI primary amino groups was quantified with a colorimetric test, resulting in 6 x 10(14) amino groups/cm(2). Different amounts of DNA were adsorbed on the functional surfaces, and the interaction between DNA and PEI was monitored both via fluorescence and XPS. The functional surfaces were indeed able to capture DNA, opening the possibility of a low-cost and fast strategy for the purification of DNA

The so-called memristors are new fundamental circuitelements able to relate the basic electric variables of flux-linkage and charge. Their storing properties and functioning propose them as artificial analogs of biological synapsisand hence of memory phenomenon. Recent advances innanomaterials provided organic polymeric (i.e. polyaniline, PANI) and inorganic memristors with similar activity.In the present work, we are interested to analyze theinteraction of biological systems with memristive devicesin order to understand novel approaches to informationtransfer and processing in bio-electronics. 48. Fabrication of a MEMS-based separation module for liquid chromatography

Abstract

This work presents the design, fabrication and characterization of a Si-based microseparation module for liquid chromatography (LC), targeted for agrofood applications and in particular for wine quality monitoring. The microsystem chip is a Silicon/Pyrex structure realized by anodic bonding. The basic Si-chip modules are an open tubular microcolumn with inlet/outlet for fluidic connections, a platinum heater and a Pt three-electrode amperometric sensor. Analytical calculations and finite element analysis have been performed to optimize the microcolumn design. Microchannels and inlet/outlet have been fabricated by deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) and tetra methyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAH) wet etching, respectively. The column has been functionalized with n-octyltriethoxysilane (C8-TEOS). Preliminary characterization tests of the microcolumn have been performed by evaluating the capability of the system to retain test solutions of acetic acid.
