20. Prevalence of and Factors Related to Cigarette Smoking among Students in Grade 6.

Abstract

Compared smoking rates among 1,428 Canadian children in grade six in 1975 or 1978 and examined variables related to smoking. Results indicated peer smoking and attitudes toward cigarettes were significant predictors both years. Academic achievement and aspirations entered the 1975 model while smoking exposure variables entered the 1978 model. (JAC)

Abstract

Electronic, structural, and magnetic properties of Mn-doped lanthanum ferrites were studied by neutron diffraction, superconducting quantum interference device, and impedance spectroscopy. Neutron diffraction refinements were performed with the constraint of full La occupancy, which showed the presence of excess oxygen when x<0.4. Mixed valent Mn cations and cation vacancies, therefore, exist in all the samples. The samples with x>0.7 are magnetically ordered at room temperature with orthorhombic symmetry (Pbnm). When x<0.3 the structure is rhombohedral and magnetically disordered above 16 K. The majority carriers, electron holes, correspond to high oxidation states of Mn. The carrier concentration is determined from the Seebeck coefficients, and is a function of temperature and Fe concentration. The measurements of conductivity and Seebeck coefficients show polaron hopping at elevated temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

As part of an overall educational program, bovine veterinarians' knowledge of dairy beef quality assurance was assessed, with particular emphasis on residue avoidance practices. A survey instrument was developed and sent to all members of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) in the member newsletter. Topics included respondent demographics, drug administration practices, record-keeping practices, impression of clients' attitudes and behaviors regarding drug residues, drug information sources, understanding of cull cattle marketing and processing, and interest in Dairy Beef Quality Assurance. Survey respondent demographics were similar to the general AABP membership. Abstract

This article compares cancer rate differentials for 1989-1993 and 1979-1981 between black and whites in Los Angeles, Nashville, and Atlanta, In Los Angeles and Atlanta, the black/white relative risk of lung cancer incidence has increased. While the relative risk for prostate cancer has decreased, blacks still show an excess incidence. White women still show a higher incidence of breast cancer, but the risk is closer to one. In all three cities, the excesses of black male lung cancer and female breast cancer mortalities have increased. The excess of black prostate cancer mortality increased in Atlanta and Nashville but decreased in Los Angeles. The excess of black cervical cancer mortality fell in Los Angeles and Atlanta but rose in Nashville. These results indicate a continuing need to develop and implement culturally sensitive interventions targeted at the black population.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To determine physicians' attitudes toward prescribing acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), physicians' own use of ASA and the prevalence of ASA use in the community following the trials of ASA for primary prevention of coronary heart disease. DESIGN: Random sample surveys of physicians and the general public by mail and telephone respectively and a mail survey of a selected panel of expert cardiologists and neurologists. SETTING: London, Ont., and surrounding Middlesex County. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 210 physicians (77% of eligible subjects), including family practitioners and most types of specialists, with an active medical licence and 666 English-speaking people (75% of eligible subjects) aged 18 years or more living in a household with active, listed telephone service. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Long-term ASA use (at least 80 mg on alternate days for 4 or more consecutive weeks) for the treatment of atherosclerosis. MAIN RESULTS: Sampled physicians and experts agreed that long-term ASA therapy was indicated in patients with unstable angina, a transient ischemic episode or recent myocardial infarction but not for primary prevention in healthy middle-aged men and women at low risk for ischemic vascular disease. Both groups were uncertain about the role of ASA in primary prevention in asymptomatic people with risk factors for atherosclerosis. Nine (16%) of the 55 male physicians aged 50 years or more took ASA routinely for primary prevention. In the community survey almost all those who used ASA routinely were 50 years or older. The proportions of men and women in this age group who used ASA routinely for any reason were 19% (95% confidence limits [CLs] 11 and 28) and 14% (95% CLs 8 and 19) respectively; the proportions of men and women who used ASA routinely and apparently for primary prevention were 8% and 1% respectively. A total of 43% (95% CLs 30 and 57) of those with apparent ischemic vascular disease took ASA routinely. Medically unsupervised long-term ASA use for primary or secondary prevention of ischemic vascular disease was uncommon (reported by 2% of those who used the drug routinely). CONCLUSIONS: Physicians generally agree on a role for long-term ASA therapy in the secondary prevention of ischemic vascular disease. However, the prevalence of long-term ASA use in people with overt atherosclerosis in the community may be less than optimal. The role of the drug in the primary prevention of ischemic vascular disease is less accepted. Long-term ASA use in the community for primary prevention is uncommon but detectable.
