Electronic synergy between metal ions and organic linkers is a key to engineering molecule-based materials with a high electrical conductivity and, ultimately, metallicity. To enhance conductivity in metal-organic solids, chemists aim to bring the electrochemical potentials of the constituent metal ions and bridging organic ligands closer in a quest to obtain metal-d and ligand-π admixed frontier bands. Herein, we demonstrate the critical role of the metal ion in tuning the electronic ground state of such materials. While VCl2(pyrazine)2 is an electrical insulator, TiCl2(pyrazine)2 displays the highest room-temperature electronic conductivity (5.3 S cm-1) for any metal-organic solid involving octahedrally coordinated metal ions. Notably, TiCl2(pyrazine)2 exhibits Pauli paramagnetism consistent with the specific heat, supporting the existence of a Fermi liquid state (i.e., a correlated metal). This result widens perspectives for designing molecule-based systems with strong metal-ligand covalency and electronic correlations.

The unique properties of graphene, transition-metal dichalcogenides and other two-dimensional (2D) materials have boosted interest in layered coordination solids. In particular, 2D materials that behave as both conductors and magnets could find applications in quantum magnetoelectronics and spintronics. Here, we report the synthesis of CrCl2(pyrazine)2, an air-stable layered solid, by reaction of CrCl2 with pyrazine (pyz). This compound displays a ferrimagnetic order below ∼55 K, reflecting the presence of strong magnetic interactions. Electrical conductivity measurements demonstrate that CrCl2(pyz)2 reaches a conductivity of 32 mS cm-1 at room temperature, which operates through a 2D hopping-based transport mechanism. These properties are induced by the redox-activity of the pyrazine ligand, which leads to a smearing of the Cr 3d and pyrazine π states. We suggest that the combination of redox-active ligands and reducing paramagnetic metal ions represents a general approach towards tuneable 2D materials that consist of charge-neutral layers and exhibit both long-range magnetic order and high electronic conductivity.

We apply ultrashort X-ray laser pulses to track optically excited structural dynamics of [Ir2(dimen)4]2+ molecules in solution. In our exploratory study we determine angular correlations in the scattered X-rays, which comprise a complex fingerprint of the ultrafast dynamics. Model-assisted analysis of the experimental correlation data allows us to elucidate various aspects of the photoinduced changes in the excited molecular ensembles. We unambiguously identify that in our experiment the photoinduced transition dipole moments in [Ir2(dimen)4]2+ molecules are oriented perpendicular to the Ir–Ir bond. The analysis also shows that the ground state conformer of [Ir2(dimen)4]2+ with a larger Ir–Ir distance is mostly responsible for the formation of the excited state. We also reveal that the ensemble of solute molecules can be characterized with a substantial structural heterogeneity due to solvent influence. The proposed X-ray correlation approach offers an alternative path for studies of ultrafast structural dynamics of molecular ensembles in the liquid and gas phases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Incorporating low-valent metals as nodes in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is orthogonal to the commonly accepted strategy to robust and porous structures. The electronic structures of low-valent metals are chemically unique and have driven the successes of organometallic chemistry. The translation of these properties into MOFs is largely impeded by the lack of generalizable synthetic approaches. Metal carbonyls are bona fide low-valent and volatile synthons, which, by partial chemical substitution may tether ditopic ligands into MOF architectures. We herein demonstrate the formation of CO2 adsorbing MOFs from the direct vapor-phase substitution of CO by ditopic 4,4′-bipyridine at Mo(0) and W(0) centers, which allows facile coating of low-valent MOFs onto substrates such as indium tin oxide. We envisage this strategy could be generalized to a multitude of mono- and polynuclear metal carbonyls, paralleling the diversity of conventional MOFs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The magnetic properties of the nickelalumite-type layered double hydroxides (LDH), MAl4(OH)12(SO4)·3H2O (MAl4-LDH) with M = Co2+ (S = 3/2), Ni2+ (S = 1), or Cu2+ (S = 1/2) were determined by a combined experimental and computational approach. They represent three new inorganic, low-dimensional magnetic systems with a defect-free, structurally ordered magnetic lattice. They exhibit no sign of magnetic ordering down to 2 K in contrast to conventional hydrotalcite LDH. Detailed insight into the complex interplay between the choice of magnetic ion (M2+) and magnetic properties was obtained by a combination of magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron scattering, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations. The NiAl4- and especially CoAl4-LDH have pronounced zero-field splitting (ZFS, easy-axis and easy-plane, respectively) and weak ferromagnetic nearest-neighbour interactions. Thus, they are rare examples of predominantly zero-dimensional spin systems in dense, inorganic matrices. In contrast, CuAl4-LDH (S = 1/2) consists of weakly ferromagnetic S = 1/2 spin chains. For all three MAl4-LDH, good agreement is found between the experimental magnetic parameters (J, D, g) and first-principles quantum chemical calculations, which also predict that the interchain couplings are extremely weak (< 0.1 cm−1). Achieving high conductivity in metal-organic solids can be challenging, due to the difficulty of obtaining a good overlap between the d-orbitals of the metal and the π-orbitals of the organic molecule.
