Context: Imbalances in upper-extremity soft tissue stiffness may play a role in the development of shoulder and elbow musculoskeletal injuries in tennis players. Ultrasound shear wave elastography provides quantifiable and specific data regarding muscle stiffness. The purpose of this study was to compare tendon and muscle stiffness in healthy tennis players to nontennis players. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: The shear wave modulus, measured in kilopascals, was obtained for the dominant pectoralis major, pectoralis minor, and common wrist-extensor tendon using 2-dimensional shear wave elastography ultrasound imaging (GE Logiq S8, L9 linear transducer). Independent t test was run to compare age, body mass index, and the activity index score between both groups. Within-day intrarater reliability was assessed using a within-examiner intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC [3, 1]) with 95% confidence intervals. A multivariate general linear model was run to compare the mean differences between the tennis and nontennis players for each of the soft tissues. Results: Twenty-six individuals (13 tennis players and 13 nontennis players) were recruited. Within-day ICCs were very good (ICC >.78 for the pectoralis musculature) and excellent (ICC >.94 for the common wrist extensor). Common extensor tendon stiffness was significantly higher in tennis players compared to nontennis players (mean difference = 114.8 [61.8], confidence interval, −22.8 to 252.5 kPa for the dominant arm [P =.039]). Mean pectoralis major and minor stiffness differences were not significant (P >.214). Conclusions: Common wrist-extensor stiffness in healthy recreational tennis players is higher than those who do not play tennis. Therefore, clinicians may need to facilitate a greater soft tissue stiffness response with resistance training when rehabilitating recreational tennis players as compared to those not playing tennis. Shoulder pain is a complex, prevalent problem that is multifactorial in nature. While there are many potential causes, one common suspect is the rotator cuff musculature. The purpose of the present study was to induce pain in the supraspinatus muscle of healthy subjects and observe the resulting changes in muscle activity. Eight muscles on 23 subjects were assessed using electromyography: anterior, middle, and posterior deltoid; pectoralis major; upper trapezius; latissimus dorsi; serratus anterior; supraspinatus; and infraspinatus. It was hypothesized that the rotator cuff muscles would display reduced activity during pain, and that reductions in activity would remain after the pain had dissipated. Both of the rotator cuff muscles measured did indeed display reduced activity in a majority of the dynamic, isometric, and maximal contractions. Purpose: To verify whether training the iron cross (IC) with assistive devices (herdos; HIC) and added external load (LHIC) to equate the moments of force developed on the rings could be considered an intermediate step between the nonoverloaded herdos situation (HIC) and the IC performed on the rings. Methods: Relative levels of surface electromyography (sEMG) activity were normalized with respect to a standing IC before comparing gymnasts who can perform the IC on the rings (achievers) and gymnast who cannot (nonachievers) in the 2 herdos conditions (HIC and LHIC). Seven muscles were chosen for sEMG analysis, namely, pectoralis major (PM), latissimus dorsi, teres major, lower trapezius, serratus anterior, biceps brachii (BB), and triceps brachii. Additionally, 3 indices were calculated to measure levels of coactivation: Elbowidx, Scapulaidx, and Shoulderidx. Results: The bigger magnitude of differences in sEMG activity among situations was found for the PM and BB (F ≥ 30.7; P <.001). When comparing the global and the PM, teres major, BB, and triceps brachii activity across groups, nonachievers activated their musculature to a greater extent than the achievers independently of the herdos situation (P ≤.046). Achievers' Elbowidx was the only index that was significantly higher (P ≤.005) in the IC in comparison to LHIC and HIC. Conclusion: sEMG activity of PM and BB was particularly sensitive between situations, independently of the level of achievement. We recommend training the IC by adding external load in the herdos situation to increase muscle activity to levels closer to the rings situation but avoiding the potential factor of injuries. Background Capsular contracture of breast implants is a major complication in breast surgery. Clinically, covering a breast implant with acellular dermal matrix (ADM) or autologous tissue is considered to be the most effective technique to prevent capsular contracture. This study was designed to compare the protective effects of ADM and latissimus dorsi (LD) muscle flap placement on capsular contracture by increasing the rate of capsular contracture through controlled radiation exposure in a rabbit model. Methods Twenty New Zealand white rabbits were divided into three groups. After the implant was placed beneath the pectoralis major muscle, the lateral third of the implant was left exposed in the control group (n = 6). In the ADM group (n = 7), the exposed implant was covered with AlloDerm. In the LD flap group (n = 7), the exposed implant was covered with a pedicled LD muscle flap. All groups were irradiated 3 weeks after implant insertion. After 6 months, peri-implant tissues were harvested and analyzed. Results ADM showed markedly lower myofibroblast activity than the LD flap. However, transforming growth factor-β1 levels and the activity of collagen types I and III produced in fibroblasts were significantly lower in the ADM group than in the LD flap group. Conclusion Based on the findings of our rabbit experiments, ADM is expected to have a comparative advantage in reducing the risk of capsular contracture compared to the LD flap. Pectoralis major injuries are uncommon, typically affecting young male athletes engaging in high-intensity activities like weightlifting. A 62-yr-old man, who previously suffered a stroke leading to left hemiparesis, hemisensory loss, and spasticity, exhibited a left chest swelling during a rehabilitation clinic visit. Subsequent inquiries revealed his recent incorporation of a home-based pulley system for stretching exercises. On examination, the swelling was diffuse, firm, and nontender, located at the midclavicular line of his left chest, with a positive dropped nipple sign and loss of the left anterior axillary fold sign. An ultrasound confirmed a low-grade injury to the left pectoralis major tendon. Spastic muscle ruptures are extremely rare, with only three published reports linked to traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injury. Spasticity increases muscle vulnerability due to structural and mechanical changes to the skeletal muscles. This is the first report of a spastic pectoralis major tendon rupture and the first after a stroke. This case highlights the need for optimized multimodal spasticity management and reinforces the importance of comprehensive patient education on the safe execution of home-based stretching exercises. BACKGROUND: Insufficient endogenous nutrients in the broiler embryo can lead to muscle gluconeogenesis, which ultimately affects the post‐hatching performance of chicks. This study investigated the effects of in ovo feeding (IOF) of N‐carbamylglutamate (NCG) on the growth hormones, carcass yield, and meat quality in broilers. Fertile eggs from a 30‐week‐old Ross 308 breeder flock were divided into three treatment groups: NC (non‐injection), SC (100 μL saline‐injection), and NCG (2 mg NCG injection). Each group had six replicates, with 70 eggs per replicate during incubation. Injections were administered on the 17.5th day of embryonic development. After hatching, 270 chicks were selected for 42‐day rearing for further sampling. RESULTS: Chicks in the NCG group had significantly higher body weight (BW) and average daily gain (ADG) at the growing phase, increased growth and testosterone hormone in both feeding phases (21 and 42 days), and improved average daily gain (ADG) and food conversion ratio (FCR) in both grower and entire feeding phases (P < 0.05). Triiodothyronine (T3) and tetraiodothyronine (T4) levels, carcass yield, dressing, drum weight, breast muscle weight, drumstick weights, thighs, pectoralis major, and their part percentage of carcass were improved in the NCG group (P < 0.05), these effects were varied along feeding phases. Moreover, IOF of the NCG also improved pectoralis breast muscle color values at 24 h post mortem (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that NCG injection at the late embryonic age of broiler enhances growth performance and meat quality throughout the lifespan and this can probably be attributed to an increase in thyroid and testosterone hormones, indicating potential involvement in metabolic and nutrient partitioning pathway regulation. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. This study aims to investigate the biomechanical behaviour and the stiffness impact of the breast internal components during running. To achieve this, a novel nonlinear multi-component dynamic finite element method (FEM) has been established, which uses experimental data obtained via 4D scanning technology and a motion capture system. The data are used to construct a geometric model that comprises the rigid body, layers of soft tissues, skin, pectoralis major muscle, fat, ligaments and glandular tissues. The traditional point-to-point method has a relative mean absolute error of less than 7.92% while the latest surface-to-surface method has an average Euclidean distance (d) of 7.05 mm, validating the simulated results. After simulating the motion of the different components of the breasts, the displacement analysis confirms that when the motion reaches the moment of largest displacement, the displacement of the breast components is proportional to their distance from the chest wall. A biomechanical analysis indicates that the stress sustained by the breast components in ascending order is the glandular tissues, pectoralis major muscle, adipose tissues, and ligaments. The ligaments provide the primary support during motion, followed by the pectoralis major muscle. In addition, specific stress points of the breast components are identified. The stiffness impact experiment indicates that compared with ligaments, the change of glandular tissue stiffness had a slightly more obvious effect on the breast surface. Variant anatomy in the axillary region is of great clinical significance. It is one of the most frequently accessed regions for radical dissection surgery. During routine dissection of embalmed cadavers, we found a rare case of two accessory muscular slips emerging from the lateral border of latissimus dorsi (LD) and the inferolateral border of pectoralis major (PM), crossing the neurovascular structures in the axilla and merging distally together to the brachial fascia at the upper end of humerus below the bicipital groove. The accessory slip from LD is commonly referred to as the "axillary arch" in literature. We identified the accessory slip from the PM crossing over the axilla as pectoralis quartus. These aberrant slips can cause neurovascular compression in the axilla and can have clinical implications. Prior knowledge of the variant anatomy is the key to successful surgery in the axilla, thereby avoiding inadvertent injuries and post-operative complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Increasing breast meat production is one of the primary goals of the broiler industry. Over the past few decades, tremendous progress has been made in genetic selection and the identification of candidate genes for improving the breast muscle mass. However, the molecular network contributing to muscle production traits in chickens still needs to be further illuminated. Methods: A total of 150 1-day-old male 817 broilers were reared in a floor litter system. At the market age of 50 d, eighteen healthy 817 broilers were slaughtered and the left pectoralis major muscle sample from each bird was collected for RNA-seq sequencing. The birds were then plucked and eviscerated and the whole breast muscle was removed and weighed. Breast muscle yield was calculated as the ratio of the breast muscle weight to the eviscerated weight. To identify the co-expression networks and hub genes contributing to breast muscle yield in chickens, we performed weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) based on the 18 transcriptome datasets of pectoralis major muscle from eighteen 817 broilers. Results: The WGCNA analysis classified all co-expressed genes in the pectoral muscle of 817 broilers into 44 modules. Among these modules, the turquoise and skyblue3 modules were found to be most significantly positively (r = 0.78, p = 1e-04) and negatively (r = –0.57, p = 0.01) associated with breast meat yield, respectively. Further analysis identified several hub genes (e.g., DLX3, SH3RF2, TPM1, CAV3, MYF6, and CFL2) that involved in muscle structure and muscle development were identified as potential regulators of breast meat production. Conclusion: The present study has advanced our understanding of the molecular regulatory networks contributing to muscle growth and breast muscle production and will contribute to the molecular breeding of chickens in the future. Background: Pectoralis minor muscle originates from different 3 ribs and converges into one attachment point. Pectoralis minor shortening can contribute for many syndromes and impairments especially at the shoulder. Pectoralis minor tightness is very high in college going students. The gross stretch is the stretching procedure which increases the length of the pectoralis minor muscle. This shoulder position produces movement of the muscle insertion in a posterior direction in conjunction with scapular motion that is performed at flexion and elevation in the scapular plane, thereby lengthening the muscle. Retraction 30 is stretching with scapular retraction at 30 degrees of shoulder flexion; the flexion angle at 30 degrees can lengthen the muscle along muscle fiber direction in the coronal plane. 30 degrees of flexion is considered to be more comfortable than a higher angle of flexion, as well as the angle is closest to the line of force Objectives of the study: To compare the effectiveness of gross stretch and retraction 30 in relieving pectoralis minor muscle tightness which can be in co-operated in further treatment protocols. Study Design: Comparative Study Methodology: Two group pre-test post-test study design with purposive sampling method was opted. Selected subjects were allocated to two groups. Forty subjects (20 males and 20 females) who fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria were recruited for the study. The independent variables are gross stretch and retraction 30 whereas the dependant variables were PMI (pectoralis minor index), pectoralis minor length test and Cervical Curvature. Result: This study results implies that retraction 30 is better when compared to gross stretch for correcting pectoralis minor tightness. Hence should be included as an inevitable part of stretching treatment. Practicing clinicians should continue to use evidence based decisions when treating pectoralis minor tightness. Bats are unique among mammals for evolving powered flight. However, very little data are available on the muscle properties and architecture of bat flight muscles. Diffusible iodine contrast‐enhanced computed tomography (diceCT) is an established tool for 3D visualisation of anatomy and is becoming a more readily accessible and widely used technique. Here, we combine this technique with gross dissection of the Egyptian fruit bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus) to compare muscle masses, fibre lengths and physiological cross‐sectional areas (PCSA) of muscles with published forelimb data from an array of non‐flying mammals and flying birds. The Egyptian fruit bat has a highly specialised pectoralis (pars posterior) architecturally optimised to generate power. The elbow flexion/extension muscles (biceps brachii and triceps brachii) have comparable PCSAs to the pectoralis, but shorter fibre lengths, which are optimised to generate large forces. Our data also show that the Egyptian fruit bat is more similar to flying birds than non‐flying mammals with its highly disparate muscle architecture. Specifically, the Egyptian fruit bat have uniquely enlarged pectoralis muscles and elbow flexion and extension muscles (bicep brachii and triceps brachii) to aid powered flight. Finally, while the Egyptian fruit bat has a comparable heterogeneity in pectoralis (pars posterior) fibre length across the cranial‐caudal axis to that seen in birds, the average normalised fibre length is larger than that seen in any of the surveyed birds. Objective: The aim of the study is to investigate the efficacy of targeted scapular stabilization exercise in shoulder pain. Design: This is an evaluator-blinded, multicenter, randomized con- trolled trial. The scapular stabilization exercise group (n =45)received scapular stabilization exercise based on the type of scapular dyskinesis for 6 wks; the conventional exercise group (n = 45) received pendu- lum, wall climbing and stick exercises for 6 wks. Constant-Murley score, numerical rating scale, range of motion, type of scapular dyskinesis, lateral scapular sliding test, pectoralis minor index, scapu- lar index, and satisfaction were assessed at baseline, 2-, 4-, and 6-wk treatment as well as a 6-wk follow-up. Results: After a 6-wk intervention, the improvement of Constant- Murley score was greater in the scapular stabilization exercise group than in the conventional exercise group, and improvement continued at the 6-wk follow-up (F =15.39, P < 0.001, partial η² =0.17).The results were also significant for numerical rating scale during activity, lateral scapular sliding test, pectoralis minor index, type of scapular dyskinesis, and satisfaction in favor of the scapular stabilization exercise group (P < 0.05). Rationale: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide. Our previous studies have identified that nocturnal hypoxemia causes skeletal muscle loss (i.e., sarcopenia) in in vitro models of COPD. Objectives: We aimed to extend our preclinical mechanistic findings by analyzing a large sleep registry to determine whether nocturnal hypoxemia is associated with sarcopenia in patients with COPD. Methods: Sleep studies from patients with COPD (n = 479) and control subjects without COPD (n = 275) were analyzed. Patients with obstructive sleep apnea, as defined by apnea–hypopnea index ⩾ 5, were excluded. Pectoralis muscle cross-sectional area (PMcsa) was quantified using computed tomography scans performed within 1 year of the sleep study. We defined sarcopenia as less than the lowest 20% residuals for PMcsa of control subjects, which was adjusted for age and body mass index (BMI) and stratified by sex. Youden's optimal cut-point criteria were used to predict sarcopenia based on mean oxygen saturation during sleep. Additional measures of nocturnal hypoxemia were analyzed. The pectoralis muscle index (PMI) was defined as PMcsa normalized to BMI. Results: On average, males with COPD had a 16.6% lower PMI than control males (1.41 ± 0.44 vs. 1.69 ± 0.56 cm2/BMI; P < 0.001), whereas females with COPD had a 9.4% lower PMI than control females (0.96 ± 0.27 vs. 1.06 ± 0.33 cm2/BMI; P < 0.001). Males with COPD with nocturnal hypoxemia had a 9.5% decrease in PMI versus COPD with normal O2 (1.33 ± 0.39 vs. 1.47 ± 0.46 cm2/BMI; P < 0.05) and a 23.6% decrease compared with control subjects (1.33 ± 0.39 vs. 1.74 ± 0.56 cm2/BMI; P < 0.001). Females with COPD with nocturnal hypoxemia had an 11.2% decrease versus COPD with normal O2 (0.87 ± 0.26 vs. 0.98 ± 0.28 cm2/BMI; P < 0.05) and a 17.9% decrease compared with control subjects (0.87 ± 0.26 vs. 1.06 ± 0.33 cm2/BMI; P < 0.001). These findings were largely replicated using multiple measures of nocturnal hypoxemia. Conclusions: We defined sarcopenia in the pectoralis muscle using residuals that take into account age, BMI, and sex. We found that patients with COPD have a lower PMI than patients without COPD and that nocturnal hypoxemia was associated with an additional decrease in the PMI of patients with COPD. Additional prospective analyses are needed to determine a protective threshold of oxygen saturation to prevent or reverse sarcopenia due to nocturnal hypoxemia in COPD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Pre‐left ventricular assist device (LVAD) pectoralis muscle assessment, an estimate of sarcopenia, has been associated with postoperative mortality and gastrointestinal bleeding, though its association with inflammation, endotoxemia, length‐of‐stay (LOS), and readmissions remains underexplored. Methods: This was a single‐center cohort study of LVAD patients implanted 1/2015–10/2018. Preoperative pectoralis muscle area was measured on chest computed tomography (CT), adjusted for height squared to derive pectoralis muscle area index (PMI). Those with PMI in the lowest quintile were defined as low‐PMI cohort; all others constituted the reference cohort. Biomarkers of inflammation (interleukin‐6, adiponectin, tumor necrosis factor‐α [TNFα]) and endotoxemia (soluble (s)CD14) were measured in a subset of patients. Results: Of the 254 LVAD patients, 95 had a preoperative chest CT (median days pre‐LVAD: 7 [IQR 3–13]), of whom 19 (20.0%) were in the low‐PMI cohort and the remainder were in the reference cohort. Compared with the reference cohort, the low‐PMI cohort had higher levels of sCD14 (2594 vs. 1850 ng/mL; p = 0.04) and TNFα (2.9 vs. 1.9 pg/mL; p = 0.03). In adjusted analyses, the low‐PMI cohort had longer LOS (incidence rate ratio 1.56 [95% confidence interval 1.16–2.10], p = 0.004) and higher risk of 90‐day and 1‐year readmissions (subhazard ratio 5.48 [1.88–16.0], p = 0.002; hazard ratio 1.73 [1.02–2.94]; p = 0.04, respectively). With climate change increasing not just mean temperatures but the frequency of cold snaps and heat waves, animals occupying thermally variable areas may be faced with thermal conditions for which they are not prepared. Studies of physiological adaptations of temperate resident birds to such thermal variability are largely lacking in the literature. To address this gap, we acclimated winter-phenotype house sparrows (Passer domesticus) to stable warm, stable cold, and fluctuating cold temperatures. We then measured several metrics of the oxidative stress (OS) system, including enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants and lipid oxidative damage, in brain (post-mitotic), kidney (mitotic), liver (mitotic) and pectoralis muscle (post-mitotic). We predicted that high metabolic flexibility could be linked to increases in reactive oxygen damage. Alternatively, if variation in ROS production is not associated with metabolic flexibility, then we predict no antioxidant compensation with thermal variation. Our data suggest that ROS production is not associated with metabolic flexibility, as we found no differences across thermal treatment groups. However, we did find differences across tissues. Brain catalase activity demonstrated the lowest values compared with kidney, liver and muscle. In contrast, brain glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities were higher than those in kidney and liver. PURPOSE: We tested the ability of [18F] fluorthanatrace (FTT), a radiolabeled analog of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP)-1 inhibitors, to demonstrate target engagement on positron emission tomography (PET) scans from patients with newly diagnosed primary breast cancer receiving the PARP inhibitor (PARPi) talazoparib. METHODS: Seven patients with germline BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants underwent [18F]FTT PET-computed tomography scanning at baseline, and five underwent repeat scanning 14 days after talazoparib initiation. Maximum uptake on PET was quantified in the primary tumor, involved nodes, contralateral pectoralis muscle, and lumbar vertebra body level 3, and compared between the two time points. RESULTS: Blocking of [18F]FTT was observed on the second scan. Potentially strong but nonsignificant correlations were found between changes in tumor volume (on ultrasound at 1 month v baseline) and percentage changes in tumor-to-muscle uptake ratio at 14 days from baseline (Spearman rank correlation coefficient r = 1; P =.083); and between the highest-grade hematologic toxicity and baseline bone marrow-to-muscle (B/M) uptake ratio (r = 0.72; P =.068) and percentage change in B/M ratio at 14 days from baseline (r = 0.87; P =.058). CONCLUSION: We conclude that [18F]FTT can image target engagement by PARPi, but larger studies are needed to determine whether [18F]FTT uptake can predict response to PARPi and whether uptake of [18F]FTT in bone marrow may be an early predictor of hematologic toxicity. Simple Summary: White striping (WS) is a condition frequently observed in poultry farming, which reduces consumer acceptability and causes economic losses for the industry. Although common, the development of WS during the animal's growth remains unclear. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify genes involved in the occurrence of WS in broiler chickens at 35 days of age and through which processes they act. For this, breast samples were collected from normal and WS-affected chickens, and complete RNA sequencing was performed. Thirty genes showing an altered expression were identified, of which 23 were more expressed and 7 were less expressed in affected chickens compared to normal ones. Fourteen of these genes were related to WS for the first time and are associated with muscle development (CEPBD, DUSP8, METTL21EP, NELL2, UBE3D), lipid metabolism (PDK4, DDIT4, FKBP5, DGAT2, LIPG, TDH, and RGCC), and collagen (COL4A5 and COL4A6). Genes related to muscle, as well as cellular processes, are possibly involved with the initial phase of WS development. Genes linked to lipid metabolism and collagen may be more related to the progression of this condition. White striping (WS) is a myopathy characterized by the appearance of white stripes parallel to the muscle fibers in the breast of broiler chickens, composed of adipose and connective tissues. This condition causes economic losses and, although common, its etiology remains poorly understood. Hence, the objective was to identify genes and biological mechanisms involved in the early stages of WS using a paternal broiler line that grows slightly slower than commercial ones, at 35 days of age, through the RNA sequencing of the pectoralis major muscle. Thirty genes were differentially expressed between normal and WS-affected chickens, with 23 upregulated and 7 downregulated in the affected broilers. Of these, 14 genes are novel candidates for WS and are implicated in biological processes related to muscle development (CEPBD, DUSP8, METTL21EP, NELL2, and UBE3D), lipid metabolism (PDK4, DDIT4, FKBP5, DGAT2, LIPG, TDH, and RGCC), and collagen (COL4A5 and COL4A6). Low muscle mass is associated with numerous adverse outcomes independent of other associated comorbid diseases. We aimed to predict and understand an individual's risk for developing low muscle mass using proteomics and machine learning. We identified eight biomarkers associated with low pectoralis muscle area (PMA). We built three random forest classification models that used either clinical measures, feature selected biomarkers, or both to predict development of low PMA. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for each model was: clinical-only = 0.646, biomarker-only = 0.740, and combined = 0.744. We displayed the heterogenetic nature of an individual's risk for developing low PMA and identified two distinct subtypes of participants who developed low PMA. While additional validation is required, our methods for identifying and understanding individual and group risk for low muscle mass could be used to enable developments in the personalized prevention of low muscle mass. Sarcopenia has been shown to portend worse outcomes in injured patients; however, little is known about the impact of thoracic muscle wasting on outcomes of patients with chest wall injury. We hypothesized that reduced pectoralis muscle mass is associated with poor outcomes in patients with severe blunt chest wall injury. All patients admitted to the intensive care unit between 2014 and 2019 with blunt chest wall injury requiring mechanical ventilation were retrospectively identified. Blunt chest wall injury was defined as the presence of one or more rib fractures as a result of blunt injury mechanism. Exclusion criteria included lack of admission computed tomography imaging, penetrating trauma, <18 y of age, and primary neurologic injury. Thoracic musculature was assessed by measuring pectoralis muscle cross-sectional area (cm2) that was obtained at the fourth thoracic vertebral level using Slice-O-Matic software. The area was then divided by the patient height in meters2 to calculate pectoralis muscle index (PMI) (cm2/m2). Patients were divided into two groups, 1) the lowest gender-specific quartile of PMI and 2) second-fourth gender-specific PMI quartiles for comparative analysis. One hundred fifty-three patients met the inclusion criteria with a median (interquartile range) age 48 y (34-60), body mass index of 30.1 kg/m2 (24.9-34.6), and rib score of 3.0 (2.0-4.0). Seventy-five percent of patients (116/153) were male. Fourteen patients (8%) had prior history of chronic lung disease. Median (IQR) intensive care unit length-of-stay and duration of mechanical ventilation (MV) was 18.0 d (13.0-25.0) and 15.0 d (10.0-21.0), respectively. Seventy-three patients (48%) underwent tracheostomy and nine patients (6%) expired during hospitalization. On multivariate linear regression, reduced pectoralis muscle mass was associated with increased MV duration when adjusting for rib score and injury severity score (β 5.98, 95% confidence interval 1.28-10.68, P = 0.013). Reduced pectoralis muscle mass is associated with increased duration of MV in patients with severe blunt chest wall injury. Breast muscle growth rate and intramuscular fat (IMF) content show apparent differences between fast-growing broilers and slow-growing indigenous chickens. However, the underlying genetic basis of these phenotypic characteristics remains elusive. In this study, we investigate the dynamic alterations of three-dimensional genome architecture and chromatin accessibility in breast muscle across four key developmental stages from embryo to starter chick in Arbor Acres (AA) broilers and Yufen (YF) indigenous chickens. The limited breed-specifically up-regulated genes (Bup-DEGs) are embedded in breed-specific A compartment, while a majority of the Bup-DEGs involving myogenesis and adipogenesis are regulated by the breed-specific TAD reprogramming. Chromatin loops allow distal accessible regions to interact with myogenic genes, and those loops share an extremely low similarity between chicken with different growth rate. Moreover, AA-specific loop interactions promote the expression of 40 Bup-DEGs, such as IGF1, which contributes to myofiber hypertrophy. YF-specific loop interactions or distal accessible regions lead to increased expression of 5 Bup-DEGs, including PIGO, PEMT, DHCR7, TMEM38B, and DHDH, which contribute to IMF deposition. These results help elucidate the regulation of breast muscle growth and IMF deposition in chickens. Respiratory diseases significantly affect respiratory function, making them a considerable contributor to global mortality. The respiratory muscles play an important role in disease prognosis; as such, quantitative analysis of the respiratory muscles is crucial to assess the status of the respiratory system and the quality of life in patients. In this study, we aimed to develop an automated approach for the segmentation and classification of three types of respiratory muscles from computed tomography (CT) images using artificial intelligence. With a dataset of approximately 600,000 thoracic CT images from 3,200 individuals, we trained the model using the Attention U-Net architecture, optimized for detailed and focused segmentation. Subsequently, we calculated the volumes and densities from the muscle masks segmented by our model and performed correlation analysis with pulmonary function test (PFT) parameters. The segmentation models for muscle tissue and respiratory muscles obtained dice scores of 0.9823 and 0.9688, respectively. The classification model, achieving a generalized dice score of 0.9900, also demonstrated high accuracy in classifying thoracic region muscle types, as evidenced by its F1 scores: 0.9793 for the pectoralis muscle, 0.9975 for the erector spinae muscle, and 0.9839 for the intercostal muscle. In the correlation analysis, the volume of the respiratory muscles showed a strong correlation with PFT parameters, suggesting that respiratory muscle volume may serve as a potential novel biomarker for respiratory function. Poultry meat-production is increasing worldwide; leading to the selection of chickens for meat-production that show a fast growth. A label-free quantitative proteomic-approach and Western-blot were applied to investigate the dynamics of muscle protein under rapid growth conditions in two common fast-growing broiler genetic-lines (Ross 508 and AZ Extra Heavy Red-chicken). Muscle exudate from chicken Pectoralis major was used as substrate to unveil the proteome of these genetic-lines. Six-hundred forty-five proteins were identified in total from all samples, and after statistical-analysis 172 proteins were found to be differentially-expressed, clearly distinguishing the two chicken genetic-lines. Several of these differentially-expressed proteins were involved with the proteasome and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis-pathways. Changes in meat-quality traits were also observed, which were reflected in the proteomic-profile. Proteins involved in the ubiquitin–proteasome system were associated with the bigger muscle mass of Ross 508, while phosphoglucomutase 1 was associated with a possible higher capability of AZ Extra Heavy Red-chickens to cope with stressors. This pilot proteomic-approach applied on muscle exudate samples provided key evidence about the pathways and processes underlying these two chicken genetic-lines and their meat-quality parameters. Background: Systemic inflammation is believed to contribute to small cell lung cancer (SCLC) progression, but the underlying relationship remains unclear. Lipocalin‐2, a potential biomarker of inflammation, has been implicated in various cancers but its prognostic value in SCLC is underexplored. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 191 patients with SCLC (72 with limited‐stage [LD] and 119 with extensive‐stage) treated using platinum‐based chemotherapy. Lipocalin‐2 expression was evaluated using immunohistochemistry. Optimal cutoff values for lipocalin‐2 and neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were determined using time‐dependent receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. The pectoralis muscle index was used to assess sarcopenia. Results: In LD‐SCLC, high lipocalin‐2 expression was associated with worse progression‐free survival (PFS; median: 7.0 vs. 15.9 months, p = 0.015) and overall survival (OS; median: 12.9 vs. 30.3 months, p = 0.035) compared with low lipocalin‐2 expression. Patients were stratified into three prognostic groups by combining lipocalin‐2 with NLR: low lipocalin‐2/low NLR, high lipocalin‐2/low NLR or low lipocalin‐2/high NLR, and high lipocalin‐2/high NLR (median PFS: 17.3 vs. 11.0 vs. 6.3 months, p = 0.004; median OS: 30.5 vs. 17.3 vs. 8.6 months, p = 0.002). Similar trends were observed when combining lipocalin‐2 with the pectoralis muscle index. High lipocalin‐2 expression was also associated with lower complete response rates (18.9% vs. 34.3%, p = 0.035). No significant prognostic implications were found for lipocalin‐2 in extensive‐stage SCLC. Conclusions: High lipocalin‐2 expression is potentially associated with poorer survival in LD‐SCLC. Prior research suggests exercise during pullet rearing can mitigate lay-phase bone fractures by strengthening muscles, enhancing balance, and increasing bone mass. This study aimed to confirm that Hy-Line brown pullets with multi-tier perches show increased activity and improved musculoskeletal health. Pullets (n = 810) were randomly allocated to housing systems, either with multi-tier perches (P; n = 15 pens) or without (NP; n = 15 pens), spanning from 0–17 weeks of age. At 5, 11, and 17 weeks, individual birds were meticulously monitored for activity using accelerometers over three consecutive days (n = 90 randomly selected birds/week). At 11 and 17 weeks, 60 birds underwent euthanasia and computed tomography (CT) scans to ascertain tibiotarsal bone mineral density and cross-sectional area measurements. Post-CT scanning, birds were dissected for muscle size, tibiotarsal breaking strength, and tibiotarsal ash percentage measurements. Additionally, serum concentrations of bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and procollagen type 1 N-terminal propeptide were assessed as markers of bone formation (n = 90 birds/week). Pullet group P exhibited heightened vertical activity (P<0.05), with no discernible differences in overall activity (P>0.05) during weeks 5, 11, and 17 compared to group NP. Tibiotarsal bones of P pullets demonstrated superior total and cortical bone mineral density at week 11, alongside increased cortical bone cross-sectional areas and heightened total and cortical bone mineral densities at week 17 (P<0.05) compared to NP pullets. At week 11, P pullets displayed larger leg muscles, including triceps, pectoralis major and minor, and leg muscles at week 17 (P<0.05) compared to NP pullets. Notably, at both weeks, P pullets' tibiae exhibited greater breaking strengths, higher ash percentages, and elevated concentrations of bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and procollagen type 1 N-terminal propeptide compared to NP pullets (P<0.05). Simple Summary: Positive and negative pressure ventilation systems are widely used in poultry farming to control the internal environment of poultry houses, especially in tropical regions, in which hot and humid climates can pose challenges to the thermal regulation of animals. Knowing that thermal stress impacts the quality of animal meat, this study aimed to evaluate the thermal performance and quality of poultry meat in these two types of shed. The main results found here were that the negative pressure system presents lower temperatures and air enthalpy, and the animals reared in this system have better quality meat. We recommend the negative ventilation system for broiler producers in tropical regions due to its ability to provide better thermal indicators and chicken meat quality. This study aimed to evaluate the thermal performance and meat quality in broilers reared in positive pressure tunnel ventilation (PP) and negative pressure tunnel ventilation (NP) in production houses. 320 Cobb broilers (40 broilers per house) were used. Pectoralis major muscles from 40 broilers (10 broilers per house) were randomly selected and analysed for L* (lightness), a* (redness), b* (yellowness), pH, drip loss (DL), cooking loss (CL) and shear force (SF). Air temperature and humidity of the transportation and slaughterhouse waiting room were recorded in the last week of rearing. Subsequently, the enthalpy comfort index (ECI) was calculated. Air temperature and ECI were higher (p < 0.05) in positive pressure sheds, whereas relative humidity was higher (p < 0.001) in negative pressure sheds. There was no statistically significant difference between the enthalpy comfort index during transport and lairage (p > 0.005). Meat quality defects (high L*, DL, CL, SF) were found in PP and NP. It was observed that b* was higher in PP, although pH and CL were higher in NP. Differences in pH, b* and CL indicate that broilers from PP had a higher level of heat stress. In conclusion, differences in pH, b*value and cooking loss in breast broilers indicate that birds in PP had a higher level of heat stress. Breast reconstruction following mastectomy plays a vital role in many individuals’ recovery, symbolizing a shift from loss back to wholeness. Yet, this path can be complex, particularly in instances involving complicating factors such as radiotherapy and significant breast size. In such scenarios, often viewed as suboptimal for implant-based breast reconstruction, prioritizing the patient’s preferences is crucial. This article showcases the experience of a 50-year-old Caucasian woman who came to our department with a breast lump, later diagnosed as invasive mammary carcinoma of no specific type (NST) via percutaneous biopsy. Post a radical mastectomy of the left breast, left axillary lymphadenectomy and the placement of an expander beneath the pectoralis major muscle, she underwent radiotherapy following the tumor board’s advice due to positive lymph nodes. Patient opted not to have autologous breast reconstruction and we proceeded with the second phase, exchanging the expander for a breast implant and adding Acellular Dermal Matrix (ADM) in the infero-lateral pole of the breast for essential support and stability. Despite the challenges faced, our case successfully illustrates that with careful surgical planning and a patient diligently following postoperative care, implant-based breast reconstruction with ADM’s support can be effectively and safely achieved, even in less-than-ideal situations, fulfilling patient expectations. Shoulder muscles are active during front-crawl swimming to provide propulsion and stabilize the glenohumeral and scapulothoracic joints. Researchers have proposed that fatigue might contribute to altered activation of these muscles and represent a risk factor for injuries. Tensiomyography (TMG) might function as a noninvasive tool to detect changes in contractile measures of the skeletal muscles due to exercise-induced neuromuscular fatigue, though it has not yet been used in the shoulder muscles of swimmers. To assess the effects of a fatiguing swimming protocol on shoulder muscle TMG measures and isometric strength in competitive swimmers. Cross-sectional study. Swimming pool facility. A total of 14 young front-crawl competitive swimmers (11 males and 3 females; age = 21 ± 3 years [range, 17–26 years], height = 1.78 ± 0.06 m, mass = 73.1 ± 9.2 kg). Participants completed TMG and isometric strength assessments before and after 30-minute, high-intensity swim training. The TMG assessment was performed on 7 muscles of the shoulder according to front-crawl biomechanics and the applicability of the technique to obtain data, such as time to contraction and muscle-belly radial displacement. Isometric strength was assessed using a digital handheld dynamometer during shoulder flexion, extension, external rotation, and internal rotation. Fatigue induced a smaller radial displacement, mostly observable in latissimus dorsi (−1.0 mm; 95% CI = −1.7, −0.3 mm; P =.007) and pectoralis major muscles (−1.4 mm; 95% CI = −2.4, −0.4 mm; P =.007). Background A strong body of literature has been published outlining muscle activity differences during sports performance in groups of overhead athletes. However, there are limited studies that have directly compared the muscle activity in overhead athletes with and without history of shoulder injury during functional everyday tasks. Purpose This study aimed to identify muscle activities across fourteen upper extremity and core muscles during three functional everyday movements in athletes with and without history of shoulder injury. Study Design Cross-Sectional Study Methods Thirty-two male overhead throwing athletes (fifteen healthy and seventeen injured) were recruited and completed three everyday functional movements of high elevation, low elevation, and rotation, using their dominant arm to move an object between two fixed positions. Electromyography (EMG) was recorded for fourteen muscles including: biceps brachii, deltoids (anterior, medial, and posterior), trapezius (upper and lower), pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi, serratus anterior, infraspinatus, external obliques, and gluteus maximus (all surface electrodes) and supraspinatus (fine wire electrode). Mixed model repeated measures ANOVA and post-hoc analysis assessed mean muscle activity (%MVC) between groups and each movement phase. Results Upper trapezius elicited higher mean activity in healthy athletes during both phases of the arm rotation task (p < 0.05). No differences between groups were evident for arm elevation tasks. Qualitative analysis of muscle patterns during functional tasks reflected a temporal shift in muscle activation timings and magnitudes between athlete groups, suggesting potential compensatory mechanisms in injured athletes. The objective of this study was to validate a novel computerized method of ultrasound image analysis to determine chemical composition of pectoralis major muscles in broiler chickens. Ultrasonograms of pectoral muscles in the longitudinal and transverse planes were obtained from 40 birds just before slaughter. All chemical constituents of muscle samples were determined with the validated laboratory techniques, and the results served as a benchmark for developing the present algorithmic estimates of chicken meat composition. An inhouse developed algorithm (r-Algo) was used to normalize the ultrasonograms and to identify pixel intensity ranges for which linear correlations between mean numerical pixel values and the content of various chemical constituents were the strongest (based on the values of correlation coefficients), using a stepwise sequestration of ultrasound bitmaps. Percentages of chemical constituents were the dependent (accepted) variables and the results of echotextural analyses (luminance or pixel intensity), carried out with a commercially available image analysis software (ImageProPlus®), were the explanatory variables. The predictive regression equations were determined in 30 randomly selected algorithm-training experimental units, and their accuracy was tested in a subset of 10 birds allocated to the algorithm-validation group. Significant determination coefficients were found for all chemical constituents studied, with the accuracy ranging from 62.70% (linoleic acid, transverse plane, pixel range of 141–142) to 96.65% (total hypocholesterolemic acids, longitudinal plane, pixel range of 136–150). The present validation results indicate that accurate prediction of muscle chemical composition using echotextural image analyses is feasible after identifying specific pixel intensity ranges. Background: The aim of the study was to investigate the muscle differences in children with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) using opportunistic low-dose chest CT and to compare different methods for the segmentation of muscle in children. Methods: This single center retrospective study enrolled children with OI and controls undergoing opportunistic low-dose chest CT obtained during the COVID pandemic. From the CT images, muscle size (cross-sectional area) and density (mean Hounsfield Units [HU]) of the trunk muscles were measured at the mid-T4 and the mid-T10 level using two methods, the fixed thresholds and the Gaussian mixture model. The Bland-Altman method was also used to compute the strength of agreement between two methods. Comparison of muscle results between OI and controls were analyzed with Student t tests. Results: 20 children with OI (mean age, 9.1 ± 3.3 years, 15 males) and 40 age- and sex-matched controls were enrolled. Mean differences between two methods were good. Children with OI had lower T4 and T10 muscle density than controls measured by the fixed thresholds (41.2 HU vs. 48.0 HU, p < 0.01; 37.3 HU vs. 45.9 HU, p < 0.01). However, children with OI had lower T4 muscle size, T4 muscle density, T10 muscle size and T10 muscle density than controls measured by the Gaussian mixture model (110.9 vs. 127.2 cm2, p = 0.03; 44.6 HU vs. 51.3 HU, p < 0.01; 72.6 vs. 88.0 cm2, p = 0.01; 41.6 HU vs. 50.3 HU, p < 0.01, respectively). Conclusions: Children with OI had lower trunk muscle density indicating that OI might also impair muscle quality. This study investigated the effects of white meat, such as chicken, intake combined with resistance training on muscle mass and strength in the elderly women, and whether the underlying mechanism involves changes in the gut microbiota. Ninety‐three volunteers (age 59–79 years) were randomly allocated to sedentary control with placebo (Sed + PL) or chicken meat (Sed + HP) and resistance training with placebo (RT + PL) or chicken meat (RT + HP). Resistance training sessions were performed 3 d/week for 12 weeks using leg extensions and curls. Boiled chicken meat (110 g, containing 22.5 g protein) was ingested 3 d/week for 12 weeks. Maximal muscle strength and whole‐body lean mass increased significantly in the RT + PL group compared to the Sed + HP group, and the RT + HP group showed a significantly greater increase than the Sed + HP and RT + PL groups. Additionally, the gut microbiota composition did not change before or after the interventions in any of the four groups. Moreover, the individual comparison of gut bacteria using false discovery rate‐based statistical analysis showed no alterations before or after the interventions in the four groups. Resistance training combined with chicken meat intake may effective have increased muscle mass and strength without drastically modifying the gut microbiota composition in elderly women. Simple Summary: The last decade of intensive research on the role and importance of intestinal microbial communities has brought abundant novel information and a high appreciation of microbiome contribution to medical and veterinary research that stretches beyond probiotic and pathogenic effects. We can now investigate the complex microbial community inhabiting major host cavities and colonising organs. In poultry research, it is common to collect cloacal swabs or faecal droppings for non-invasive sample collection or caecum and other intestinal origins to investigate their specific microbial communities. Litter samples are less frequently collected for microbial community investigation despite them being in close contact with birds and playing a significant role in microbiota colonisation, development, and maturation. Here, we explored the microbiota of litter and compared them with selected gut sections and bird health status. Probiotics provided from hatch have a major influence on microbiota development, and together with environmental and bedding microbiota, shape the microbial community of the litter. We investigated the influence of probiotic supplementation and a leaky gut challenge induced using dexamethasone (DEX) on the litter microbial community and litter parameters. The probiotic product was a mix of three Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strains. The litter microbiota were compared to the microbial communities from other gut sections. The litter samples had higher microbial diversity compared to the caecum, gizzard, jejunum, and jejunal mucosa. The high similarity between the litter phylum-level microbiota and gizzard microbiota detected in our study could be a consequence of ingested feed and litter passing through the gizzard. Moreover, the litter microbial community is fundamentally distinct from the intestinal microbiota, as evidenced by the number of genera present in the litter but absent from all the intestinal sections and vice versa. Furthermore, LEfSe analysis identified distinct microbial taxa across different groups, with specific genera associated with different treatments. In terms of litter quality, the birds in the DEX groups had a significantly higher moisture content, indicating successful leaky gut challenge, while probiotic supplementation did not significantly affect the moisture levels. In conservative treatment for proximal humerus fractures (PHFs), the immobilization position of the affected arm should not be determined uniformly. The aim of this study is to investigate the optimal immobilization position for conservative treatment of different types of PHFs. We hypothesized that the optimal position minimizing the deforming force in PHFs depends on the fracture components involved. PHF models involving either the surgical neck (SN) or greater tuberosity (GT) were created using 12 fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders. In the SN model, the deforming forces on the pectoralis major muscle were measured in full adduction by increasing external rotation. In the GT model, the deforming force of the supraspinatus muscle was measured in neutral rotation by decreasing abduction, and the deforming force of the infraspinatus muscle was measured in full adduction by increasing internal rotation, respectively. In the SN model, the deforming force of the pectoralis major muscle increased significantly with external rotation from full internal rotation to neutral rotation (P = 0.006), indicating that the arm should be placed in full internal rotation. In the GT model, the deforming force of the supraspinatus muscle increased significantly with adduction from 45° of abduction to full adduction (P = 0.006); the deforming force of the infraspinatus muscle increased significantly with internal rotation from neutral rotation to full internal rotation (P = 0.006). These findings should be considered when placing the arm in abduction and neutral rotation so as to minimize the deforming force by either the supra or infraspinatus muscle. Muscle growth and development are pivotal characteristics in poultry breeding, with muscle fiber development during the embryonic period crucial for determining inherent muscle growth potential. Extensive evidence indicates that non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) play a regulatory role in muscle growth and development. Among ncRNAs, circular RNAs (circRNAs), characterized by a closed-loop structure, have been shown to modulate biological processes through the regulation of microRNAs (miRNAs). This study seeks to identify and characterize the spatiotemporal-specific expression of circRNAs during embryonic muscle development in Chengkou mountain chicken, and to construct the potential regulatory network of circRNAs-miRNA-mRNAs. The muscle fibers of HE-stained sections became more distinct, and their boundaries were more defined over time. Subsequent RNA sequencing of 12 samples from four periods generated 9,904 novel circRNAs, including 917 differentially expressed circRNAs. The weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA)-identified circRNA source genes significantly enriched pathways related to cell fraction, cell growth, and muscle fiber growth regulation. Furthermore, a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network constructed using combined data of present and previous differentially expressed circRNAs, miRNA, and mRNA revealed that several circRNA transcripts regulate MYH1D, MYH1B, CAPZA1, and PERM1 proteins. These findings provide insight into the potential pathways and mechanisms through which circRNAs regulate embryonic muscle development in poultry, a theoretical support for trait improvement in domestic chickens. Background: Wooden breast (WB) myopathy is a common myopathy found in commercial broiler chickens worldwide. Histological examination has revealed that WB myopathy is accompanied by damage to the pectoralis major (PM) muscle. However, the underlying mechanisms responsible for the formation of WB in broilers have not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the potential role of hypoxia-mediated programmed cell death (PCD) in the formation of WB myopathy. Results: Histological examination and biochemical analysis were performed on the PM muscle of the control (CON) and WB groups. A significantly increased thickness of the breast muscle in the top, middle, and bottom portions (P<0.01) was found along with pathological structure damage of myofibers in the WB group. The number of capillaries per fiber in PM muscle, and the levels of pO2 and sO2 in the blood, were significantly decreased (P < 0.01), while the levels of pCO2 and TCO2 in the blood were significantly increased (P < 0.05), suggesting hypoxic conditions in the PM muscle of the WB group. We further evaluated the PCD-related pathways including autophagy, apoptosis, and necroptosis to understand the consequence response to enhanced hypoxic conditions in the PM muscle of birds with WB. The ratio of LC3 II to LC3 I, and the autophagy-related factors HIF-1α, BNIP3, Beclin1, AMPKα, and ULK1 at the mRNA and protein levels, were all significantly upregulated (P < 0.05), showing that autophagy occurred in the PM muscle of the WB group. The apoptotic index, as well as the expressions of Bax, Cytc, caspase 9, and caspase 3, were significantly increased (P < 0.05), whereas Bcl-2 was significantly decreased (P < 0.05) in the WB-affected PM muscle, indicating the occurrence of apoptosis mediated by the mitochondrial pathway. Additionally, the expressions of necroptosis-related factors RIP1, RIP3, and MLKL, as well as NF-κB and the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, were all significantly enhanced (P < 0.05) in the WB-affected PM muscle. Conclusions: The WB myopathy reduces blood supply and induces hypoxia in the PM muscle, which is closely related to the occurrence of PCD including apoptosis, autophagy, and necroptosis within myofibers, and finally leads to abnormal muscle damage and the development of WB in broilers. Background: Existing studies have shown that computed tomography (CT) attenuation and skeletal muscle tissue are strongly associated with osteoporosis; however, few studies have examined whether vertebral HU values and the pectoral muscle index (PMI) measured at the level of the 4th thoracic vertebra (T4) are strongly associated with bone mineral density (BMD). In this study, we demonstrate that vertebral HU values and the PMI based on chest CT can be used to opportunistically screen for osteoporosis and reduce fracture risk through prompt treatment. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 1000 patients who underwent chest CT and DXA scans from August 2020–2022. The T4 HU value and PMI were obtained using manual chest CT measurements. The participants were classified into normal, osteopenia, and osteoporosis groups based on the results of dual-energy X-ray (DXA) absorptiometry. We compared the clinical baseline data, T4 HU value, and PMI between the three groups of patients and analyzed the correlation between the T4 HU value, PMI, and BMD to further evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of the T4 HU value and PMI for patients with low BMD and osteoporosis. Results: The study ultimately enrolled 469 participants. The T4 HU value and PMI had a high screening capacity for both low BMD and osteoporosis. The combined diagnostic model—incorporating sex, age, BMI, T4 HU value, and PMI—demonstrated the best diagnostic efficacy, with areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.887 and 0.892 for identifying low BMD and osteoporosis, respectively. Conclusions: The measurement of T4 HU value and PMI on chest CT can be used as an opportunistic screening tool for osteoporosis with excellent diagnostic efficacy. This approach allows the early prevention of osteoporotic fractures via the timely screening of individuals at high risk of osteoporosis without requiring additional radiation. Objectives: Current research suggests static stretch-induced maximal strength increases and muscle hypertrophy with potential to substitute resistance-training routines. However, most studies investigated the plantar flexors. This study explored the effects of a static stretching program on maximal strength, hypertrophy and flexibility of the pectoralis major and compared the effects with those of traditional resistance training. Methods: Eighty-one (81) active participants were allocated to either a static stretching, strength-training or control group. Pectoralis stretching was applied 15 min/day, 4 days per week for 8 weeks, while resistance training trained 3 days per week, 5 × 12 repetitions. Results: There was an increase in all parameters (strength: p < 0.001, ƞ2 = 0.313, muscle thickness: p < 0.001, ƞ2 = 0.157–0.264, flexibility: p < 0.001, ƞ2 = 0.316) and a time*group interaction (strength: p = 0.001, ƞ2 = 0.154, muscle thickness: p = 0.008–0.001, ƞ2 = 0.117–0.173, flexibility: p < 0.001, ƞ2 = 0.267). Post-hoc testing showed no difference between both intervention groups regarding maximal strength and muscle thickness (p = 0.905–0.983, d = 0.036–0.087), while flexibility increased in the stretching group (p = 0.001, d = 0.789). Conclusion: Stretching showed increases in maximal strength and hypertrophy, which were comparable with commonly used resistance training. Based on current literature, the influence of mechanical tension as the underlying mechanism is discussed. Furthermore, as equipment and comparatively long stretching durations are requested to induce meaningful strength increases in recreationally active participants, practical application seems limited to special circumstances. Muscle mass depletion is associated with unfavorable outcomes in many diseases. However, its relationship with cardiac arrest outcomes has not been explored. This retrospective single-center study determined the relationship between muscle mass depletion and the neurological outcomes of patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) by measuring muscle mass at various locations. Adult patients with OHCA, who were treated with target temperature management, and who underwent abdominal or chest computed tomography (CT) within 3 months of the cardiac arrest were included. Skeletal muscle index (SMI) was measured at the third lumbar vertebra (L3) level, psoas muscle, fourth thoracic vertebra (T4) level, and pectoralis muscle. The Youden index was used to determine a low SMI based on sex-specific cutoff values. The outcome variables were "good neurological outcome" and "survival" at hospital discharge. Multivariable analyses revealed that patients with low T4 SMI level were significantly associated with good neurological outcomes at hospital discharge (odds ratio = 0.26, 95% confidence interval: 0.07–0.88, p = 0.036). However, no significant differences were observed between good neurological outcomes and low SMI at the L3 level and psoas and pectoralis muscles; SMIs were not associated with survival at hospital discharge. T4 level SMI depletion was inversely associated with good neurological outcomes in patients with OHCA. Thoracic muscle depletion may be crucial for predicting the neurological outcomes in patients with OHCA and further investigation in larger prospective study is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study determined the effect of dietary Zn concentration and source in phytase-supplemented diets on bone mineralisation, gastrointestinal phytate breakdown, mRNA-level gene expression (in jejunum, liver and Pectoralis major muscle) and growth performance in broiler chickens. 2. Male Cobb 500 broilers were housed in floor pens (d 0-d 21) to test seven treatments with six replicate pens (12 birds per pen). Diets were arranged in a 2 × 3 + 1-factorial arrangement. The experimental factors were Zn source (Zn-oxide (ZnO) or Zn-glycinate (ZnGly) and Zn supplementation level (10, 30 or 50 mg/kg of diet). A maize-soybean meal-based diet without supplementation and formulated to contain 28 mg Zn/kg (analysed to be 35 mg Zn/kg), served as a control. 3. Zinc source and level did not influence (p > 0.05) bone ash concentration and quantity or mineral concentrations in bone ash. Tibia thickness was greater in the treatment ZnO10 than in the treatments ZnO30 and ZnGly50 (Zn level × Zn source: p = 0.036), but width and breaking strength were not affected. 4. Pre-caecal P digestibility and concentrations of phytate breakdown products in the ileum, except for InsP5, were not affected by Zn source or level. Only the expression of EIF4EBP1 (eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E-binding protein 1) and FBXO32 (F-box only protein 32) in Pectoralis major muscle was affected by source, where expression was increased in ZnO compared to ZnGly diets (p < 0.05). 5. In conclusion, Zn level and source did not affect gastrointestinal phytate degradation and bone mineralisation in phytase-supplemented diets. The intrinsic Zn concentration appeared to be sufficient for maximum bone Zn deposition under the conditions of the present study but requires validation in longer-term trials. Background: Pneumonia-related hospitalization may be associated with advanced skeletal muscle loss due to aging (i.e., sarcopenia) or chronic illnesses (i.e., cachexia). Early detection of muscle loss may now be feasible using deep-learning algorithms applied on conventional chest CT. Objectives: To implement a fully automated deep-learning algorithm for pectoralis muscle measures from conventional chest CT and investigate longitudinal associations between these measures and incident pneumonia hospitalization according to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) status. Materials and methods: This analysis from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis included participants with available chest CT examinations between 2010 and 2012. We implemented pectoralis muscle composition measures from a fully automated deep-learning algorithm (Mask R-CNN, built on the Faster Region Proposal Network (R-) Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with an extension for mask identification) for two-dimensional segmentation. Associations between CT-derived measures and incident pneumonia hospitalizations were evaluated using Cox proportional hazards models adjusted for multiple confounders which include but are not limited to age, sex, race, smoking, BMI, physical activity, and forced-expiratory-volume-at-1 s-to-functional-vital-capacity ratio. Stratification analyses were conducted based on baseline COPD status. Results: This study included 2595 participants (51% female; median age: 68 (IQR: 61, 76)) CT examinations for whom we implemented deep learning–derived measures for longitudinal analyses. Eighty-six incident pneumonia hospitalizations occurred during a median 6.67-year follow-up. Overall, pectoralis muscle composition measures did not predict incident pneumonia. However, in fully-adjusted models, only among participants with COPD (N = 507), CT measures like extramyocellular fat index (hazard ratio: 1.98, 95% CI: 1.22, 3.21, p value: 0.02), were independently associated with incident pneumonia. Conclusion: Reliable deep learning–derived pectoralis muscle measures could predict incident pneumonia hospitalization only among participants with known COPD. Clinical relevance statement: Pectoralis muscle measures obtainable at zero additional cost or radiation exposure from any chest CT may have independent predictive value for clinical outcomes in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. Introduction: The objective of this study was to examine the effects of in ovo nicotinamide riboside (NR) feeding on high-yield broiler growth and meat quality. Methods: Fertilized Cobb 700 by-product eggs (N = 3,240) were randomly assigned to one of four in ovo treatments and injected with 0 (0NR), 250 (250NR), 500 (500NR), or 1,000 (1,000NR) mM NR at incubation-day 10. Chicks were hatched, vent sexed, and randomly placed 18 per pen in one of 32 floor pens. On day 48, birds were processed and deboned. Results: There were dose effects for all part weights (p < 0.05). Pectoralis major weight of 250, 500, and 1,000NR carcasses were heavier than 0NR (p < 0.03) but did not differ from remaining NR doses (p > 0.26). Pectoralis minor weight of 250NR carcasses was greater (p < 0.01) than 0NR and did not differ from other NR tenders (p > 0.21). Pectoralis minor weight of 500 and 1,000NR carcasses was greater than 0NR (p < 0.09), but did not differ (P = 0.82) from each other. There were no dose effects for all Pectoralis major and minor myopathy scores and incidence except incidence of tenders scoring "0" and "1" for woody-like tender. Percentage of NR1,000 tenders scoring 0 and 1 for woody-like tender were less than and greater than all other treatments, respectively (p < 0.05). There were no differences among remaining NR doses and NR0 tenders (p > 0.10). There were dose effects for muscle fiber number (P = 0.03). There tended to be more muscle fibers within 250 and 1,000NR muscles compared to 0NR (p < 0.09). Pectoralis major muscle from 500NR did not differ in muscle fiber number compared to 250 and 1,000NR (p > 0.18), but had more (p < 0.01) fibers than 0NR muscle. There tended to be more fibers in 250 and 1,000NR muscles compared to 0NR muscle (p < 0.09). Discussion: Nicotinamide riboside in ovo feeding caused birds to produce heavier parts; however, myopathy scores and incidence were minimally affected which may have been due greater muscle fiber number. Background: The pedicle pectoralis major muscle flap is the primary workhorse flap used in head, neck, and large axillary reconstruction; however, traditional harvesting techniques may leave significant donor site scarring. Case Report: Endoscopy-assisted harvesting of a pedicled pectoralis major muscle flap, or muscle flap and musculocutaneous flap, was performed in two patients, after which axillary defects were closed with a 4 cm incision at the 5th intercostal space using the harvested flap matching the size of the defect. The harvesting process took 40 and 32 minutes, respectively, and patients were able to return home at 5 to 7 days post-surgery. No postoperative complications were observed in either patient. Conclusion: Endoscopic harvesting of the pedicled pectoralis major flap helps to reduce the extent of skin incisions because it gathers the pedicle vessel under the skin. Purpose: To enhance performance in race riding, knowledge of current training workload is required. The objectives of this study were to quantify the physiological demands and profile the muscle activity of jockeys riding track-work. Methods: Ten apprentice jockeys and 48 horses were instrumented with heart-rate monitors, accelerometers, and a surface electromyography BodySuit (recording 8 muscle groups: quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteal, lower back, obliques, abdominal, trapezial, and pectoral) that recorded continuously while riding their normal morning track-work. Data were extracted and time matched into 200-m sections for analysis once the jockey reached steady-state canter (6.9 m·s−1). Results: Jockeys rode a mean (±SD) of 6 (1) horses each morning over 2.5 hours, spending ∼30 minutes at a canter (8.8 [ 0.7] m·s−1), with mean heart rate of 129 (11) beats·min–1 and ratings of perceived exertion representing easy-/moderate-intensity exercise. Mean magnitude of horse (0.17 [0.01] m) and jockey center of mass (0.16 [0.02] m) displacement per stride differed from that of the jockey's head (0.11 [0.01] m, P <.05). The majority of horse oscillation was damped in the upper body with a 3-fold reduction in the medio/lateral and fore/aft planes (P <.05), to minimize jockey head movement. Lower-body muscles absorbed horse motion, with core and upper-body muscles important for postural stabilization. Conclusions: The physiological demands of riding track-work were low, with no evidence of fatigue. Introduction: Deep sternal wound infection (DSWI) after midline sternotomy of cardiac surgery is a challenging complication that affects the outcome of surgery. This study aims to assess the clinical effectiveness of the antibiotic-loaded bone cement fixation technique combined with bilateral pectoralis major muscle flaps tension-free management in the treatment of DSWI. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 5 patients with DSWI who underwent antibiotic-loaded bone cement combined with bilateral pectoralis major muscle flaps for chest wall reconstruction after sternotomy for cardiac surgery in a tertiary hospital in China from January 2020 to December 2021. The clinical and follow-up data were retrospectively analyzed. Results: All patients had no perioperative mortalities, no postoperative complications, 100% wound healing, and an average hospital stay length of 24 days. The follow-up periods were from 6 to 35 months (mean 19.6 months). None of the cases showed wound problems after initial reconstruction using antibiotic-loaded bone cement combined with bilateral pectoralis major muscle flaps. Conclusions: We report our successful treatment of DSWI, using antibiotic-loaded bone cement fixation technique combined with bilateral pectoralis major muscle flaps tension-free management. We present a case of a healthy young male professional water polo player who presented with swelling and pain in the upper arm and elbow after vigorous exercise. Diagnostic workup included an MRI and dynamic duplex ultrasound, which revealed compression of the axillary vein by a hypertrophic pectoralis minor muscle without thrombosis, constituting McCleery syndrome. This is a rare entity within the multiple thoracic outlet syndrome aetiologies. Taking a detailed history and physical examination complemented with diagnostic imaging are vital to the diagnosis. Simple Summary: Although several techniques exist for reconstructing partial hypopharyngeal defects following a total laryngectomy, no international consensus has been reached to date. As a result, there currently are large differences between institutions with regard to the flap types used to perform these reconstructions. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the complication rates and functional results of commonly used reconstructive techniques for hypopharyngeal defects. Pectoralis major myofascial flaps showed promising results compared to free-flap reconstructions, with similar rates of fistulas, strictures and flap failure. In contrast, pectoralis major myocutaneous flaps had a significantly higher fistula rate (34%) in comparison to other flap types (range: 7–17%), whereas no differences were observed for strictures, flap failure or oral intake. Free flaps and pectoralis major myofascial flaps should be considered the preferred methods for the reconstruction of partial hypopharyngeal defects following total laryngectomy. Background: Various operative techniques exist to reconstruct partial hypopharyngeal defects following total laryngectomy. The current study aimed to investigate and compare complications and functional results following commonly used reconstructive techniques. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed using studies that investigated outcomes after the reconstruction of a partial hypopharyngeal defect. The outcomes of interest were fistulas, strictures, flap failure, swallowing function and postoperative speech. Results: Of the 4035 studies identified, 23 were included in this review. Four common reconstructive techniques were reported, with a total of 794 patients: (1) pectoralis major myocutaneous and (2) myofascial flap, (3) anterolateral thigh free flap and (4) radial forearm free flap. Fistulas occurred significantly more often than pectoralis major myocutaneous flaps (34%, 95% CI 23–47%) compared with other flaps (p < 0.001). No significant differences in the rates of strictures or flap failure were observed. Pectoralis major myofascial flaps were non-inferior to free-flap reconstructions. Insufficient data were available to assess speech results between flap types. Conclusion: Pectoralis myocutaneous flaps should not be the preferred method of reconstruction for most patients, considering their significantly higher rate of fistulas. Increased alanine aminotransferase indicated possible liver injury alongside wooden breast myopathy. Elevated creatine kinase and potassium suggested muscle damage, indicating CK as a potential biomarker for WB. Wooden breast (WB) myopathy is a pathology of the pectoralis major muscle. Fast-growing commercial lines of broilers that are selected for high breast muscle yields are more susceptible to this myopathy. Therefore, the objective of this research was to determine and compare the changes in the blood serum biochemical parameters of Ross 308 chicken broilers without myopathy and those affected by WB myopathy. Blood samples were collected from male and female Ross 308 broilers that were 43 days old, with an average live weight of 2.98–3.09 kg. Representative blood samples were selected from broilers with WB (n = 33) and without WB (n = 33). In the laboratory, the blood was centrifugated, and biochemical tests were performed with an automated computerized biochemistry analyzer. The research results showed that broilers with WB had elevated blood serum levels of creatine kinase (CK) (p = 0.018), potassium (p = 0.010), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (p = 0.012). In conclusion, elevated serum levels of CK and potassium indicated that skeletal muscle cells were damaged. Moreover, increased ALT levels suggested a possible association between WB myopathy and liver damage. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of sex and hunting location on carcass characteristics and meat quality of wild-living mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) from Croatia. Twenty-eight mallards (14 ♂; 14 ♀) were hunted at two hunting locations (HL I = 8 ♂, 8 ♀; HL II = 6 ♂, 6 ♀) in the Croatian lowlands. The carcasses were eviscerated, dressed, and dissected, and the individual internal organs and carcass parts were weighed. The breast muscle (m. pectoralis major) was sampled and used to determine color, pH, drip loss, cooking loss, shear force, and proximate chemical and fatty acid composition. Sex and HL had a significant effect on the majority of carcass characteristics analyzed, but they had no effect on the physical meat parameters. The protein and ash content of mallard meat was significantly higher in HL II (23.16% vs. 22.67%; 1.45% vs. 1.36%, respectively) and the moisture content in females (72.40% vs. 71.59%). HL had a significant effect on SFA (II 33.96% vs. I 29.91%), PUFA n-3 (II 3.55% vs. I 2.69%), PUFA/SFA and n-6/n-3 ratios, and all lipid indices. Females had a significantly higher C22:6n-3 content, a higher PI index and a lower n-6/n-3 ratio.
