While research has shown the statistical significance of high school grade point averages (HSGPAs) in predicting future academic outcomes, the systems with which HSGPAs are calculated vary drastically across schools. Some schools employ unweighted grades that carry the same point value regardless of the course in which they are earned; other schools use weighting systems that assign greater value to grades earned in honors courses. Due to these inconsistencies, comparison of HSGPAs from different schools is difficult or impossible. We coded 710 transcripts from undergraduate students involved in the Joint Admissions Medical Program in Texas. All grades were standardized on an unweighted 4.0 scale in order to compare the effectiveness of weighted and unweighted HSGPAs. Using multiple regression and multiple logistic regression models, we were able to determine the predictive power of HSGPAs on four outcomes: college grade point average (CGPA), Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) scores, the likelihood of students taking the MCAT, and the likelihood of students graduating from medical school. Our results demonstrated that unweighted HSGPAs were better predictors of CGPA, but that neither type of HSGPA was a useful predictor for the other outcomes. We recommend discontinuation of the use of weighted HSGPAs in assessing the likelihood of student success in higher education.

Contingent instructional-pacing was used successfully to reduce the frequency of stereotypic motor behavior displayed by a 15-year old boy with acquired brain injury. The procedure consisted of presenting verbal instructions requiring him to perform a simple motor response each time stereotypy was demonstrated. This intervention reduced stereotypic motor behavior to a near zero frequency. (Author/MKA)

Case series summary: Described are four cats diagnosed with ophthalmomyiasis externa caused by Cuterebra larvae. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed to identify cats with ophthalmomyiasis externa between 2005 and 2020 at Cornell University Hospital for Animals. Signalment, history, clinical and diagnostic findings, treatment and outcome were recorded. All cats were young (< 3 years of age), had outdoor access and were initially examined during the summer months. All cases had unilateral disease with the right eye affected. Two cases had nictitating membrane lesions and two had orbital disease. Concurrent superficial corneal ulceration was present in three cats. Two cats suffered from pyrexia, suspected secondary to inflammation from the larval infestation. Successful larval removal was performed in all cats, which resulted in improvement of discomfort and clinical signs. A corneal ulcer persisted in one cat, which was lost to follow-up prior to ulcer resolution. Parasite identification confirmed Cuterebra species infestation in all cases. Relevance and novel information: To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of feline ophthalmomyiasis externa caused by Cuterebra species. Parasite removal was successful in restoring comfort and resolving clinical signs in all cats with adequate follow-up information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Kawasaki disease (KD) is a systemic pediatric vasculitis that most commonly affects children between the ages of 6 months and 4 years. The diagnosis of KD requires a high degree of clinical suspicion. In younger patients (less than 6 months) the diagnosis is exceedingly difficult as these patients typically do not meet the criteria to diagnosis KD clinically. Oftentimes, these younger patients do not meet enough of the criteria to warrant ordering an echocardiogram. We report a case of a 6-month-old Caucasian female who presented with high fevers originally thought to be due to a urinary tract infection. The patient required multiple echocardiograms in order to be diagnosed with incomplete KD. The patient was treated with IVIG and aspirin per standard of care, and experienced resolution of fevers and illness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An attempt is made to differentiate, both theoretically and experimentally, the continuum theory from the premature aging theory of the chronic effects of alcohol on verbal information processing. It is argued that the continuum model necessitates a demonstration of differential 'pattern' of performance between alcoholics and normals in as much as alcoholic Korsakoff patients (at one end of the continuum) do demonstrate such patterns. Premature aging theories, on the other hand, need to demonstrate only subnormal performance by alcoholics relative to their contemporaries. Two experiments designed to assess these theories provided some evidence for premature aging but none for the continuum theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
