The paramagnetic bis(5trovacenyl)dichalcogenides(η7‐C7H7)V(η5‐C5H4‐E–E–η5‐C5H4)V(η7‐C7H7) 2··(E= S), 3··(E= Se), and 4··(E= Te) were prepared by a novel path in which the elemental chalcogen atoms serve as suppliers of the hetero‐atoms and as oxidants in the final step. Compounds 2··and 4··were analyzed by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analyses. Cyclic voltammetry revealed that redox splitting in 2··–4··is not resolved, i.e. the potential difference of successive redox steps is less than 70 mV. Compound 2··was studied in detail by EPR spectroscopy and magnetic susceptometry. EPR spectroscopy clearly demonstrated spin exchange coupling of two unpaired electrons, which reside in vanadium centered orbitals (51V, I= 7/2), |JEPR(2··)| = 0.65 cm–1. The considerably larger value Jχ(2··) = –1.36 cm–1was obtained from magnetic susceptometry. This apparent discrepancy is discussed, based on a comparison of the spacers –S–S–,–CH2–CH2–, and –C(CH3) = C(CH3)–.

On the Crystal Structure of Pyrochlores: Mössbauer Spectra of Orthorhombic CsFe2F6and X‐Ray Single Crystal Studies of the Cubic Compounds CsMgGaF6, CsMIIVIIIF6(MII= Mn, Zn), CsMIIFeIIIF6(MII= Mn, Cu, Zn), and Cs4Cu5V3O2F19

Trovacene Chemistry. 13 [1] On Being Lead and Mislead in the Synthesis of Di([5]trovacenyl)ketone

Five new paramagnetic dinuclear complexes containing [5]trovacenyl groups, (η7‐C7H7)V(η5‐C5H4), have been prepared and characterized, including by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. As intervening spacers, ethenediyl units in the geminal and vicinal (Z)‐ and (E)‐bridging modes as well as methanediyl and ethanediyl units have been included with the aim of studying their propensity to transmit electric and magnetic information. It is found that redox splitting of consecutive electron‐transfer steps is resolved for reduction (0→1−→2−) only, unsaturation of the C2bridge not being requisite, since the CH2CH2 spacer also gives rise to a small redox splitting. Magnetic communication is quantified in terms of the exchange coupling constant J, accessible from the EPR hyperfine pattern in solution and from magnetic susceptometry in the solid state. The results obtained from these methods generally differ; this fact is not surprising in view of conformational differences in the respective states of aggregation. It is concluded that orientation‐dependent mechanisms of spin–spin interactions (π‐orbital overlap, hyperconjugation) contribute extensively although, as implied by sizeable Jvalues for CH2 and C2H4 linked di[5]trovacenyl groups, coupling mediated by the σ‐orbital chain must also be considered.

Jahn‐Teller Ordering in Manganese(III) Fluoride Sulfates. II. Phase Transition and Twinning of K2[MnF3(SO4)] and 1D Magnetism in Compounds A2[MnF3(SO4)] (A = K, NH4, Rb, Cs)

Die Kristallstruktur von KCuGaF6wurde auf der Basis röntgenographischer Einkristalldaten bestimmt (wR2= 0, 084 für 2476 unabhängige Reflexe). Die Verbindung kristallisiert mit a = 728, 56(4), b = 989, 51(6), c = 676, 27(3) pm, β= 93, 120(5)°, Z = 4 in der Raumgruppe P21/c des pyrochlor‐verwandten KCuCrF6‐Typs. Die oktaedrischen [GaF6]‐ und [CuF6]‐Koordinationen sind schwach bzw. stark verzerrt (Mittelwerte Ga‐F: 188, 2 pm bzw. Cu‐F: 188, 2/200, 1/227, 6 pm). Die längsten Abstände Ga‐F und die kürzesten Cu‐F zeigen sich in längs [100] bzw. [001] verlaufenden Oktaederketten der beiden Atomsorten, die auch untereinander verbrückt sind (M‐F‐M zwischen 114 und 145°). Die am Pulver und einem Einkristall gemessenen magnetischen Molsuszeptibilitäten lassen sich mit dem isotropen Heisenberg‐Modell für S = 1/2beschreiben, wenn man Kettenabbruchseffekte in Form eines paramagnetischen Anteils berücksichtigt. Hinweise auf eine dreidimensionale magnetische Ordnung konnten bis zu T = 2 K herab und auch bei schwachem Magnetfeld H < 100 G nicht beobachtet werden. Dadurch unterscheidet sich KCuGaF6(J/k = —71 K für das Pulver) von den gleichfalls magnetisch untersuchten Kettenverbindungen KCuAlF6und Na2CuScF7(J/k = —76 bzw. —59 K), für die sich ähnliche antiferromagnetische Austauschkonstanten J/k ergeben.

Na2Mn0.98Fe0.02F5and (ND4)2Mn0.98Fe0.02F5was studied with the aid of Mössbauer spectroscopy. These results were interpreted on the basis of classical soliton theory. In order to confirm this concept, we have performed neutron scattering experiments on large single crystals of the pure compounds. We discuss the results obtained on a thermal and cold three‐axis spectrometer, which probe the magnon spin wave excitations and the existence of the nonlinear excitations in the quasi 1‐d antiferromagnetic chains of Na2MnF5and (ND4)2MnF5, respectively. Additionally, we include elastic neutron diffraction and dc. single crystal susceptibility measurements to determine the magnetic structure. From the width of the quasielastic scattering signal the temperature dependence of the inverse magnetic correlation lengths was derived resulting in a soliton activation energy of Es/k = 65(3) K and Es/k = 81(3) K, respectively, which are in good agreement with the soliton energies obtained by our high resolution inelastic neutron scattering experiment. In contrast to these results the Mössbauer spectroscopy gives twice the value of the soliton energy caused by soliton pair or inter‐band excitations.

The paramagnetic boronic acid (η⁷-C7H7)V[η⁵-C5H4B(OH)2] (3^•) has been prepared and characterized structurally, emphasis being placed on hydrogen bonding motives present in the crystal. EPR spectroscopy reveals that association of 3^• is absent in fluid solution. Tri([5]trovacenyl)boroxine, 4^•••, the cyclic anhydride of 3^•, engages in antiferromagnetic exchange; magnetic susceptometry provides the value J(4^•••) = −1.04 cm^-1. Accordingly, the EPR spectrum of 4^••• in fluid solution points to 22 ⁵¹V hyperfine components separated by one-third of the coupling constant of mononuclear trovacene derivatives. Redox splittings δE1/2 between consecutive oxidation steps of 4^••• are not resolved, i.e., δE1/2 ≤ 60 mV.

Thermal rearrangement of dicycloheptatriene C14H14 and subsequent reaction with (η⁵-cyclopentadienyl)(tetracarbonyl)vanadium affords [7−7]bitrovacene, μ-η⁷:η⁷-C14H12[(η⁵-C5H5)V]2 (8^••). Sterically induced avoidance of a planar μ-η⁷:η⁷-heptafulvalenediyl bridge leads to a complicated packing pattern of varyingly twisted units of 8^•• which generates a huge unit cell (Z = 72), in stark contrast to the isomer 7^••, for which Z = 2 applies. The isomers 8^•• and 7^•• also differ with regard to the extent of intervanadium electro- and magnetocommunication. Redox splittings δE1/2 of consecutive ET steps are considerably larger for 8^••, compared to 7^••, thereby reflecting the higher contribution the larger ring makes to the SOMO. The higher spin density at the C7 compared to the C5 carbon atoms, which governs the EPR spectra, effects a pronounced gradation of the exchange coupling parameter determined by magnetic susceptometry:  J(7^••) = −2.8, J(8^••) = −24.1 cm^-1.

The biradicals 1,8-di([5]trovacenyl)naphthalene (6), 1,5-di([5]trovacenyl)naphthalene (7), and 1,3-di([5]trovacenyl)benzene (8) and the monoradical 1-[5]trovacenylnaphthalene (9) have been prepared and studied by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction (6, 8, 9), cyclic voltammetry, EPR spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptometry. Comparison of the magnetic properties of 6−9 reveals that π-stacking, as encountered in 6, largely enhances exchange interaction between the two singly occupied V(3dz^{2) orbitals. The effect of π-stacking on the electrochemical properties, as manifested in the redox splitting between consecutive electron transfer steps, is less pronounced. Redox splittings δE1/2 for consecutive reductions exceed those for oxidations of binuclear trovacenes, δE1/2(2+/+, +/0) being apparent for π-stacked 6 only. Because of the orthogonality of the metal-centered redox orbitals V1(dz2) and V2(dz2) and the η5-cyclopentadienyl π-orbitals, electro- and magnetocommunication are indirect processes. Electrocommunication rests on changes of the donor/acceptor properties of V1,V2 caused by oxidation or reduction which govern metal−ligand charge distribution; the latter changes are transmitted via the spacer. Magnetocommunication takes the form of antiferromagnetic coupling, which can be traced to spin polarization of filled π-orbitals of the bridge by orthogonal singly occupied vanadium 3dz2 orbitals.}

Aus fluß‐ und phosphorsaurer Lösung von Mangan(III) läßt sich mit Piperazin das Fluoridphosphat (pipzH2)[MnF4(H2PO4)] mit kettenförmigem Anion kristallisieren, — ein interessantes Modellsystem zum Studium der magnetischen Austauschwechselwirkung über Phosphat‐Brücken. Abhängig vom verwendeten HF/H3PO4—Überschuß kristallisiert (pipzH2) [MnF4(H2PO4)] in zwei Modifikationen Iund II, die sich vor allem in der Orientierung der Kationen unterscheiden. Form Ikristallisiert monoklin in der Raumgruppe P21/c, Z = 4, a = 6.749(1), b = 12.039(1), c = 12.501(1) Å, β = 94.420(4)°, R = 0.023, Form IIim selben Raumgruppentyp P21/c, Z = 4, a = 6.651(1), b = 12.799(1), c = 12.825(1) Å, β = 110.312(5)°, R = 0.037. Die Mn3+‐Ionen sind oktaedrisch von vier terminalen Fluoridliganden und axial von zweizähnigen verbrückenden Dihydrogenphosphatgruppen koordiniert. Der Aufbau der Kettenanionen ist in beiden Strukturen sehr ähnlich und durch ferrodistortive Jahn‐Teller‐Ordnung geprägt. Die Mn—O‐Bindungen entlang der Kettenrichtung sind mit Abständen von 2.16 bis 2.21 Å stark gestreckt, während alle Mn—F‐Bindungen mit 1.81—1.88 Å kurz sind. An einem großen Einkristall von Form Iwurden 1D‐antiferromagnetische Eigenschaften nachgewiesen. Durch Anpassung eines geeigneten Modells auf der Grundlage der Temperaturabhängigkeit der Korrelationslängen konnte bei einer Anisotropiekonstanten D/k = —2.9 K eine bemerkenswert hohe Austauschenergie von J/k = —1.6(1) K entlang der Ketten ermittelt werden.

[Fc2B2(Br)(μ‐NPEt3)2]+Br–wurde in Form von orange‐roten Einkristallen aus Ferrocenylbordibromid, [Fe(η5‐C5H5)(η5‐C5H4BBr2)], und dem silylierten Phosphanimin Me3SiNPEt3in Dichlormethan‐Lösung hergestellt. Der Komplex wurde mittels IR‐, NMR‐ und 57Fe‐Mößbauer‐Spektren sowie einer Röntgenstrukturanalyse charakterisiert. [Fc2B2(Br)(μ‐NPEt3)2]+Br–· 3 CH2Cl2(1· 3 CH2Cl2): Raumgruppe P21/n, Z = 4, Gitterkonstanten bei –50 °C: a = 1370,6(3), b = 2320,9(5), c = 1454,4(2) pm, β = 95,38(1)°, R1= 0,061. Im Kation von 1sind die ferrocenylsubstituierten Boratome von den Stickstoffatomen der [NPEt3]–‐Gruppen umgeben. Im so geformten planaren B2N2‐Vierring hat ein Boratom eine planare, das andere eine tetraedrische Koordinationssphäre.

Die Kristallstruktur von (3‐atriazH)2· [MnF5], Raumgruppe P1, Z = 4, a= 8.007(1) Å, b= 11.390(1) Å, c= 12.788(1) Å, α = 85.19(1)°, β = 71.81(1)°, γ = 73.87(1)°, R = 0.034, ist aus trans‐eckenverknüpften Oktaederketten‐Anionen [MnF5]2–∞aufgebaut, die durch die einfach protonierten organischen Aminkationen weit voneinander getrennt werden. Die [MnF6]‐Baugruppen sind entlang der Kettenrichtung – hauptsächlich in Folge des Jahn‐Teller‐Effekts – stark gestreckt ( 2.135 Å, 1.842 Å), die Ketten sind mit einem Brückenwinkel Mn–F–Mn = 139.3° stark gewinkelt. Unterhalb von ca. 66 K wird zunächst ein 1D antiferromagnetisches Verhalten mit einer Austauschenergie von J/k = –10.8 K beobachtet, das bei TN= 9.0 K in eine 3D Ordnung übergeht. Trotz der großen Kettenabstände von 8.2 Å wird mit |J′/J| = 1.3 · 10–5eine vermutlich durch H‐Brücken vermittelte deutliche Zwischenketten‐Wechselwirkung beobachtet. Dies wie das ungünstige Verhältnis D/J von 0.25 schließt die für Mn3+(S = 2) mögliche Existenz einer Haldene‐Phase aus.

An den tetragonal innenzentriert kristallisierenden Verbindungen (Z = 4) Sr5V3F19(a = 1423,4(2), c = 728,9(1) pm), Sr5Cr3F19(a = 1423,5(2), c = 728,1(1) pm), Ba5Mn3F19(a = 1468,9(1), c = 770,3(1) pm, Ba5Fe3F19(a = 1483,5(1), c = 766,7(1) pm) und Ba5Ga3F19(a = 1466,0(2), c = 760,1(2) pm) wurden röntgenographische Einkristall‐Strukturbestimmungen vorgenommen. Nur Ba5Mn3F19wurde in der Raumgruppe I4cm verfeinert (mittlere Abstände für gestreckte Oktaeder Mn1–F: 185/207 pm äquatorial/achsial; für gestauchte Oktaeder Mn2–F: 199/182 pm), die übrigen Verbindungen in der Raumgruppe I4/m. In allen Fällen zeigten sich die oktaedrischen Ligandensphären der M1‐Atome fehlgeordnet, die [M1F6] Oktaeder im einen Teil der Verbindungen zu Ketten, im anderen zu Dimeren verknüpft. Das magnetische Verhalten der o. g. V‐, Cr‐ und Mn‐Verbindungen, sowie von Pb5Mn3F19und Sr5Fe3F19wurde untersucht; die Ergebnisse werden im Zusammenhang mit den z. T. problematischen Strukturen diskutiert.

The paramagnetic complexes di(mesityl)([5]trovacenyl)borane (5^·), (mesityl)di([5]trovacenyl)borane (6^··), and tri([5]trovacenyl)borane (7^···) were prepared from [5]trovacenyllithium, (η⁵-C7H7)V(η⁵-C5H4Li), and (Mes)2BF, (Mes)BF2, and BF3, respectively. The propeller-shaped species 5^·, 6^··, and 7^··· were subjected to X-ray diffraction with the aim of possibly correlating the twist angles with intramolecular intermetallic communication. Cyclic voltammetry points to successive vanadium-centered oxidation processes and boron-centered reduction, a small redox splitting δE1/2[(2+/+), (+/0)] being observed for 6^··. According to EPR spectroscopy, performed in fluid solution, the exchange interaction J in the diradical 6^·· approaches the fast-exchange region and is attenuated significantly by quaternization at boron in [6^··–nBu]^–. Although EPR spectroscopy of the triradical 7^··· also indicates an extensive exchange interaction, the exchange parameters, derived from spectral simulation, follow the gradation J(7^···) ≈ 1/3 J(6^··). The magnetic susceptibility of 6^·· and 7^··· follows the same trend. As expected, compound 7^··· exhibits spin frustration because it contains three antiferromagnetically coupled S = 1/2 systems that are arranged in an equilateral triangle.

From the knowledge of the spin correlation functions derived from Mössbauer relaxation spectra of quasi-one-dimensional A2Mn0.98Fe()()2F5(H2O) we could fit the antiferromagnetic susceptibilities of A2MnF5(H2O) with A = Na+, (NH4)+, K+, Rb+obtained for single crystal samples. The calculation yielded characteristic parameters such as the local anisotropy D, the intra-chain exchange energy J, the inter-chain exchange energy |Jʹ|, the Neel temperature TN, and the spin canting angle φ.

Die Reaktion von Eisen(II)‐chlorid mit dem silylierten Phosphanimin Me3SiNPEt3führt bei 165 ?C in Gegenwart von Kaliumfluorid zu dem Phosphaniminato‐Komplex [FeCl(NPEt3)]4(1), der schwarze, feuchtigkeits‐ und sauerstoffempfindliche Kristalle bildet. Nach der Kristallstrukturanalyse hat 1eine Heterocuban‐Struktur, in der die Fe‐Atome und die N‐Atome der NPEt3–‐Gruppen die Ecken eines verzerrten Würfels besetzen und Fe–N–Fe‐Bindungswinkel von 83,1? und N–Fe–N‐Winkel von 96,5? bilden. Daraus resultieren auffällig kurze Fe…Fe‐Kontakte von 272,9 pm. Die Ergebnisse von magnetischen Suszeptibilitätsmessungen im Temperaturbereich von 1,8 bis 293 K und die 57Fe‐Mößbauer‐Spektren im Temperaturbereich von 2 bis 300 K werden mitgeteilt.

Lithiation of trovacene, (η⁷-C7H7)V(η⁵-C5H5), Li/I exchange, and Pd(dppf)Cl2-catalyzed homocoupling affords [5-5]bitrovacene 5^2•. Intermetallic communication manifests itself in typical biradical features of the EPR spectrum and in the resolution of redox splittings of 147 mV for the two subsequent oxidations and 224 mV for the reductions, respectively. 5^2• adopts a trans conformation in the single crystal (X-ray diffraction) as well as in rigid solution (EPR spectroscopy). A magnetic susceptibility study of 5^2• reveals weak antiferromagnetic coupling (J = −2.78 cm^-1) of the two V(d⁵) centers.

A continuous process for synthesizing superconducting oxides in the form of submicron size particles is described. The materials are prepared from weakly acidic nitrate solutions containing the metals in the required proportions to form the 1–2–3 compound. The solutions are ultrasonically dispersed in an air or oxygen carrier stream as a very fine mist. The solution aerosol is passed through a tubular furnace at space velocities of approximately 1.0 s−1above 900°C and converted into oxide particles. The oxide particles are collected downstream either on 0.5 μm MILLIPORE(R)filters or are separated by electrostatic precipitation. The as-processed powder has the tetragonal structure of YBa2Cu3O7−x. The material can be converted into the superconducting orthorhombic 1–2–3 oxide by sequentially sintering at 900, 700, and 500°C in oxygen. The process can be readily scaled up for continuous production of oxide powder.

From the results of magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements of the triple chains ACrF4(A = K, Rb, Cs), the characteristics of one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chains are found. The exchange parameters J/k are —6.2 K and —12.2 K for KCrF4and CsCrF4, respectively. Measurements on single crystals of RbCrF4reveal the exchange and the anisotropy parameters to be J/k = —10.5 K and D/k = 0.4 K. The Mössbauer spectra of 2% 57Fe doped CsCrF4show marked relaxation. One third of the magnetic chains are frustrated and remain uncorrelated with other magnetic chains.

57Fe-MÖSSBAUER spectra of the cubic elpasolithes A2INaFeF6(AI= K, Rb, Cs) show strong single line broadening in the temperature range 4.2 K ≤ T ≤ 600 K. This broadening is attributed to a statistical distribution of differently distorted FeF63-octahedra, causing a statistical distribution of electric fieldgradients at the 57Fe-position. With the aid of a model calculation it was tried to estimate the order of the octahedral distortion. For the compound Rb2NaFeF6normal to the cell axis an anion displacement of Δ q = 0.11 Å from the regular octahedral position was derived from the Mössbauer data. This value agrees with the root mean square displacement ū = 0.13 Å, which results in this direction from the strongly anisotropic fluorine temperature factors found by X-ray structure determination.

Trockene Eisensulfidschmelzen mit Zusätzen von Co und/oder Ni oder Cu wurden von sehr hohen Temperaturen schnell auf Zimmertemperatur abgeschreckt. Durch anschließendes l0monatiges Tempern bei 100, 160 und 185 °C gelang die Synthese von Mackinawit, (Fe,Co,Ni,Cu)1+xS. Die sorgfältige Durchmusterung von im Dachang-Distrikt, Guangxi-Provinz, China, gesammelten Erzen lenkte die Aufmerksamkeit auf ungewöhnlich anmutenden Jamesonit, welcher bei der Analyse augenfällige As-Gehalte und zumindest teilweise die Substitution von Pb durch Sn erkennen ließ. Experimentell konnte Pb4-xSnxFeSb6S14 (x = 0-3,5) problemlos hergestellt werden. Höhere Zinngehalte ergaben die zusätzliche Bildung von Berthierit und bleifreiem Sn2Sb2S5. Der Einbau von Zn für Fe ins Jamesonitgitter ist außerordentlich begrenzt. Ein Hg-Zinnkies idealisiert Cu2HgSnS4, verwachsen mit Hg-haltigem Kösterit, wurde in Quiruvilca/Peru-Erzen identifiziert. Interessante Mineralkombinationen fanden sich in einem Gang der Hock Aun Mine, nahe Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; neben herkömmlichen Mineralien fanden sich u.a. reichlich Kösterit und Helvin. Die mineralogische Abfolge läßt sich aus den Mineralverwachsungen herleiten. Ähnlich wird die Abfolge anhand von Mineralverwachsungen der Colquiri-Lagestätte, Bolivien, interpretiert, nämlich unter Zuhilfenahme von experimentellen Ergebnissen in Kombination mit Literaturdaten über Flüssigkeitseinschlüsse. Die fortgeführte Untersuchung des Ag-Ge-Sn-S-Systems, durchgeführt bei 400 °C, ergab neben schon bekannten Mineralien und Phasen sowie deren Mischkristallreihen u.a. zwei weitere quaternäre Sulfidverbindungen, Ag5(Ge,Sn)4±xS9 und Ag3Ge5Sn5S15. Bei der Sulfidisierung von Cu4SnS4 entstehen Covellin und Cu3SnS4. Diese ternäre Phase läßt sich in zwei Modifikationen erhalten, die jeweils als Überstrukturen des Wurtzits und des Zinkblendetyps anzusehen sind. Ganz analoges Verhalten zeigt Cu3GeS4, welches ebenfalls durch Sulfidisierung von Cu4GeS4 zu erhalten ist. Über Thalliummineralien und hierher gehörende Stoffsysteme sind wenig Informationen erhältlich, was zur Untersuchung des Systems Tl2S-Sb2S3-S Anlaß gab, und zwar über den gesamten geologisch relevanten Temperaturbereich. Neben den Mineralien Carlinit, Weissbergit, Parapierrotit und Antimonit existieren noch Tl3SbS3, Tl3SbS4 und Tl3Sb5S11. In der Phase Tl3SbS4 liegt fünfwertiges Antimon vor, wie sich mit Hilfe der Mössbauer-Spektroskopie nachweisen ließ. Bei den detaillierten Untersuchungen wurde eine Revision des komplizierten Tieftemperaturbereichs auf der Tl-reichen Seite des binären Tl-Sb-Systems notwendig. Schließlich wurden die Mineralsysteme Kupferglanz-Carlinit, Argentit/Akanthit-Carlinit und Bleiglanz-Carlinit in bezug auf Mischkristallbildung und stabile Phasen untersucht, nämlich CuTlS, Cu3T1S2, Cu9TlS5; AgTlS, Ag3TlS2 sowie Tl4PbS3. Einige dieser Phasen sind als natürlich vorkommende Mineralien denkbar. Bei niedrigen Temperaturen durchgeführte Hydrothermalversuche und trockene Sulfidsynthesen führten zur Darstellung Cu-haltigen Polydymits und des wenig bekannten Minerals Fletcherit, Cu(Co,Ni)2S4. Überwiegend gemmologisches Interesse dürften mit Hilfe des Gitterspektrographen durchgeführte Spurenanalysen von Chrysoberyllen haben; charakteristische Spurenelementgehalte von Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Cu, Nb und Sn erlauben Rückschlüsse auf die Herkunft der betreffenden Edelsteine.

Measurements of the 57Fe Mössbauer effect and magnetic susceptibility have been performed on 57Fe-doped quasi-1-d antiferromagnetic chains of Li2MnF5and Na2MnF5as a function of temperature. The Mössbauer spectra, fitted by the Blume-Tjon model, show definite relaxation effects near the Neel temperature, which are attributed to short-range order with temperature-dependent relax-ation times. The soliton model of non-linear excitations was applied. Experimental data confirm the predicted exponential temperature dependence of the thermal excitation of moving domain walls. From the activation energies E2A/k2as a function of 1-d exchange energies J/k the local anisotropy energy D/k of -3.7(2) K was derived on the basis of sine-Gordon theory. This result is in fair agreement with -3.5(1) K previously derived from magnetic susceptibility measurements. In the light of our results there is some evidence that at low bridging angle ß ≈ 102(5)° a phase-transition from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic ordering occurs.

The amidinato complex [Ph—C(NSiMe3)2]2FeCl has been prepared by the reaction of FeOCl with the amidine Ph—C(NSiMe3)[N(SiMe3)2] in acetonitrile/THF in the form of dark red moisture sensitive single crystals. The complex was characterized by IR spectroscopy, by its 57Fe-Mössbauer spectra, as well as by an X-ray structure determination. Space group PI, Z = 2, 3180 observed unique reflections, R = 0.068. Lattice dimensions at —80°C: a = 1210.4(2), b = 1272.7(3), c = 1316.0(3) pm; α = 67.81(3)°, β = 76.14(3)°, γ = 67.19(3)°. The complex has a molecular structure in which the iron atom is surrounded in a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal fashion with the chlorine ligand and two nitrogen atoms of different amidinato chelates in equatorial positions. The remaining nitrogen atoms occupy the apical positions.

The Mössbauer investigations of V1-xFexO2with x = 0.024 indicate that Fe enters two cation positions of M2and M3. At the phase transition the two quadrupole splittings show a discontinuous behavior whereas the isomer shift changes continuously with a crossingover at the M2, M3transition (Tt′= 275 K). Generally a first order phase transition is accompanied by a change of the cell volume V and a change of the isomer shift. The observed continuous behavior of the isomer shift points to a first order transition with δV ≠ 0.

The Mössbauer parameters of (CO)4FeL complexes were determined, were L are carbon ligands. The isomer shifts show strong π-interactions, if backbonding from the substituenta of the carbon atom is possible. The quadrupole splitting of [(CO)4FeCONMe2]2Ni indicates a coordination number of six for the iron atoms with iron-nickel interactions.

The magnetic properties of the d4Jahn-Teller systems AIMnIIIF4with layered structures were investigated. Neutron diffraction on powders of KMnF4and RbMnF4revealed different antiferro-magnetic spin arrangements below TN= 4.5 K and 2.3 K, respectively: for KMnF4canted antiparallel along a and b, for RbMnF4parallel along a and antiparallel along b, in both cases parallel along c, the stacking direction of layers. Mössbauer investigations on 57Fe doped KMnF4confirmed a spin orientation approximately within the layer plane. A discussion is given of the contributions to the magnetic hyperfine field and the Mössbauer linewidth in quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnets with Ising anisotropy due to thermal excitation of domain wall dynamics (solitons). The experimental data seem to confirm the predicted exponential temperature dependence of the linewidth. From magnetization measurements on powders and a single crystal of KMnF4the 2-d exchange energy and the out-of-plane and in-plane anisotropies could be extracted. In addition, from susceptibility measurements the exchange energies of NaMnF4, RbMnF4and CsMnF4were calculated. A linear dependence of these exchange energies (positive for ferromagnetic CsMnF4, negative for the other AMnF4compounds) on the cos2of the Mn-F-Mn bridge angle is observed and compared with the behaviour of the AFeF4compounds which is also linear but with reverse sign of the slope. The specific superexchange mechanisms active in Jahn-Teller systems with antiferrodistortively ordered layers are suggested to be responsible for these findings.

Die Phosphaniminato‐Komplexe [NiBr(NPR3)]4(R = CH3, C2H5) und [NiI(NPEt3)]4werden aus NiBr2bzw. NiI2mit überschüssigem Me3SiNPR3(R = CH3, C2H5) in der Schmelze in Gegenwart von Natriumfluorid als dunkelgrüne, feuchtigkeitsempfindliche Kristallpulver erhalten. Sie werden durch IR‐Spektroskopie, Massenspektrometrie, magnetisches Verhalten und durch Kristallstrukturanalysen charakterisiert. Die Verbindungen haben Heterocuban‐Strukturen, in denen die Nickelatome über μ3–N‐Brücken der Phosphaniminato‐Gruppen verknüpft sind.

Die Titelverbindung wurde aus einer Lösung von MnF3· 3 H2O in Flußsäure durch Zugabe von NaH2PO4· H2O in 2 M Phosphorsäure kristallisiert. Ihre Struktur wurde bei 295 K und bei 150 K an einem trigonalen meroedrisch verzwillingten Kristall bestimmt: Raumgruppe P3c1, Z = 4, a = 1055.0(1), c = 2314.0(1) pm (a = 1052.5(1), c = 2304.2(1) pm bei 150 K), wR2= 0.0651 (0.0651). Sie enthält anionische Schichten mit dreieckigen Baugruppen aus drei [MnF3O2(H2O)]‐Oktaedern, die über ein gemeinsames μ3‐F‐Atom und drei Phosphatgruppen verknüpft sind. Jeweils drei solche Gruppen werden durch zwei [MnF3O3]‐Oktaeder über sechs Phosphat‐O‐Atome zu trigonalen Schichten in der a,b‐Ebene verknüpft. Bei der Stapelung der Schichten entstehen Kanäle entlang der c‐Achse, in denen die meisten der Na+‐Ionen sitzen. Die [MnF3O2(H2O)]‐Oktaeder zeigen starke Streckung entlang der μ3‐F–Mn–OH2‐Achse, was hauptsächlich auf den Jahn‐Teller‐Effekt zurückgeführt wird, während in den [MnF3O3]‐Oktaedern mit C3‐Symmetrie nur geringe Anzeichen für einen dynamischen Jahn‐Teller‐Effekt beobachtet werden. Die magnetischen Eigenschaften (μeff= 4.61 μB, 3‐D Ordnungspunkt, TN= 3.3 K) wurden am Pulver bestimmt, mögliche magnetische Austauschpfade werden diskutiert.

A membrane gas separator was combined with a metal oxide gas sensor to form an in-situ monitoring system for combustible gases in the flue stack of fossil-fired boilers. The membrane protects sensitive gas sensors from the hostile stack gas environment, while providing acceptable response time. The concept was demonstrated in the laboratory using hydrogen or carbon monoxide in air on the primary side of the gas separator and at temperatures as high as 200°C.
