The Wide Area Linear Optical Polarimeter North (WALOP-North) is an optical polarimeter designed for the needs of the PASIPHAE survey. It will be installed on the 1.3m telescope at the Skinakas Observatory in Crete, Greece. After commissioning, it will measure the polarization of millions of stars at high Galactic latitude, aiming to measure hundreds of stars per $deg^2$. The astronomical filter used in the instrument is a modified, polarimetrically-neutral broadband SDSS-r. This instrument will be pioneering one due to its large field-of-view (FoV) of $30\times 30$ $arcmin^2$ and high accuracy polarimetry measurements. The accuracy and sensitivity of the instrument in polarization fraction will be at the 0.1\% and 0.05\% level, respectively. Four separate 4k$\times$4k CCDs will be used as the instrument detectors, each imaging one of the $0\deg{}, 45\deg{}, 90\deg{}$ and $135\deg{}$ polarized FoV separately, therefore making the instrument a four-channel, one-shot polarimeter. Here, we present the overall optical design of the instrument, emphasizing on the aspects of the instrument that are different from WALOP-South. Haystack and Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) observations recently revealed strong sinusoidal total flux density variations that maintained coherence between 1975 and 2021 in the blazar PKS 2131-021 ($z=1.283)$. This was interpreted as possible evidence of a supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB). Extended observations through 2023 show coherence over 47.9~years, with an observed period $P_\textrm{15 GHz}=(1739.3 \pm 1.2) \, {\rm days}$. We reject, with $p$-value = $5.3 \times 10^{-7}$, the hypothesis that the variations are due to random fluctuations in the red noise tail of the power spectral density. There is clearly a constant-period physical phenomenon in PKS 2131-021 producing coherent intermittent sinusoidal flux density variations. We find the coherent sinusoidal intensity variations extend from below 2.7 GHz to optical frequencies, from which we derive an observed period $P_\textrm{optical}=(1764 \pm 36)$ days. Across this broad frequency range there is a monotonic phase shift in the sinusoidal variations with frequency. The same coherent periodicity is possibly also observed at $\gamma$-ray energies. The importance of well-vetted SMBHB candidates to searches for gravitational waves is pointed out. We estimate the fraction of blazars that are SMBHB candidates to be $>1$ in 100. The origin of high-energy (HE) astrophysical neutrinos has remained an elusive hot topic in the field of HE astrophysics for the past decade. Apart from a handful of individual associations, the vast majority of HE neutrinos arise from unknown sources. While there are theoretically-motivated candidate populations, such as blazars -- a subclass of AGN with jets pointed towards our line-of-sight -- they have not yet been convincingly linked to HE neutrino production. Here, we perform a spatio-temporal association analysis between a sample of blazars (from CGRaBS catalog) in the radio and optical bands and the most up-to-date IceCube HE neutrino catalog. We find that if the IceCube error regions are enlarged by 1$^\circ$ in quadrature, to account for unknown systematic errors at maximal level, a spatio-temporal correlation between the multiwavelength light curves of the CGRaBS blazars and the IceCube HE neutrinos is hinted at least at a 2.17$\sigma$ significance level. On the other hand, when the IceCube error regions are taken as their published values, we do not find any significant correlations. A discrepancy in the blazar-neutrino correlation strengths, when using such minimal and enlarged error region scenarios, was also obtained in a recent study by the IceCube collaboration. In our study, this difference arises because several flaring blazars -- coinciding with a neutrino arrival time -- happen to narrowly miss the published 90\%-likelihood error region of the nearest neutrino event. For all of the associations driving our most significant correlations, the flaring blazar is much less than 1$^\circ$ away from the published error regions. Therefore, our results indicate that the question of the blazar-neutrino connection is highly sensitive to the reconstruction of the neutrino error regions, whose reliability is expected to improve with the next generation of neutrino observatories., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 24 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, 3 electronic tables

Wide-Area Linear Optical Polarimeter (WALOP)-South is the first wide-field and survey-capacity polarimeter in the optical wavelengths. On schedule for commissioning in 2024, it will be mounted on the 1 m SAAO telescope in Sutherland Observatory, South Africa to undertake the PASIPHAE sky survey. PASIPHAE program will create the first polarimetric sky map in the optical wavelengths, spanning more than 2000 square degrees of the southern Galactic region. The innovative design of WALOP-South will enable it to measure the linear polarization (Stokes parameters $q$ and $u$), in a single exposure, of all sources in a field of view (FoV) of $35\times35$ arcminutes-squared in the SDSS-r broadband and narrowband filters between 500-750 nm with 0.1 % polarization accuracy. The unique goals of the instrument place very stringent systems engineering goals, including on the performance of the optical, polarimetric, optomechanical, and electronic subsystems. All the subsystems have been designed carefully to meet the overall instrument performance goals. As of May 2024, all the instrument optical and mechanical subsystems have been assembled and are currently getting tested and integrated. The complete testing and characterization of the instrument in the lab is expected to be completed by August 2024. The Wide-Area Linear Optical Polarimeter (WALOP)-South instrument is an upcoming wide-field and high-accuracy optical polarimeter to be used as a survey instrument for carrying out the Polar-Areas Stellar Imaging in Polarization High Accuracy Experiment (PASIPHAE) program. Designed to operate as a one-shot four-channel and four-camera imaging polarimeter, it will have a field of view of $35\times 35$ arcminutes and will measure the Stokes parameters $I$, $q$, and $u$ in a single exposure in the SDSS-r broadband filter. The design goal for the instrument is to achieve an overall polarimetric measurement accuracy of 0.1 % over the entire field of view. We present here the complete polarimetric modeling of the instrument, characterizing the amount and sources of instrumental polarization. To accurately retrieve the real Stokes parameters of a source from the measured values, we have developed a calibration method for the instrument. Using this calibration method and simulated data, we demonstrate how to correct instrumental polarization and obtain 0.1 % accuracy in the degree of polarization, $p$. Additionally, we tested and validated the calibration method by implementing it on a table-top WALOP-like test-bed polarimeter in the laboratory., Comment: 34 pages, 24 figures. Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs), young jetted-AGN of overall projected size <1 kpc, are of great interest due to their youth and evolution. The classification was introduced to distinguish between ~95% of powerful compact extragalactic radio sources in flux density limited samples that are dominated by asymmetric emission due to relativistic beaming from jets aligned close to the line of sight, and ~5% of objects that are not. The original classification criteria were: (i) overall projected diameter smaller than ~1 kpc, (ii) identified center of activity, and (iii) symmetric jet structure about the center. There is confusion and erosion of the value of the CSO classification due to misclassifications. Many jets contain compact bright features outside core, resulting in a GPS total spectrum and a "compact double" appearance, and some objects with jet axes aligned close to the line of sight appear symmetric because the approaching jet is projected on both sides of the core. To eliminate the confusion, we propose adding (iv) slow radio variability and (v) low apparent velocity of bright features moving along the jets to the above CSO criteria. We introduce COMAP-EoR, the next generation of the Carbon Monoxide Mapping Array Project aimed at extending CO intensity mapping to the Epoch of Reionization. COMAP-EoR supplements the existing 30 GHz COMAP Pathfinder with two additional 30 GHz instruments and a new 16 GHz receiver. This combination of frequencies will be able to simultaneously map CO(1--0) and CO(2--1) at reionization redshifts ($z\sim5-8$) in addition to providing a significant boost to the $z\sim3$ sensitivity of the Pathfinder. We examine a set of existing models of the EoR CO signal, and find power spectra spanning several orders of magnitude, highlighting our extreme ignorance about this period of cosmic history and the value of the COMAP-EoR measurement. We carry out the most detailed forecast to date of an intensity mapping cross-correlation, and find that five out of the six models we consider yield signal to noise ratios (S/N) $\gtrsim20$ for COMAP-EoR, with the brightest reaching a S/N above 400. We show that, for these models, COMAP-EoR can make a detailed measurement of the cosmic molecular gas history from $z\sim2-8$, as well as probe the population of faint, star-forming galaxies predicted by these models to be undetectable by traditional surveys. We show that, for the single model that does not predict numerous faint emitters, a COMAP-EoR-type measurement is required to rule out their existence. We present the current state of models for the $z\sim3$ carbon monoxide (CO) line-intensity signal targeted by the CO Mapping Array Project (COMAP) Pathfinder in the context of its early science results. Our fiducial model, relating dark matter halo properties to CO luminosities, informs parameter priors with empirical models of the galaxy-halo connection and previous CO(1-0) observations. The Pathfinder early science data spanning wavenumbers $k=0.051$-$0.62\,$Mpc$^{-1}$ represent the first direct 3D constraint on the clustering component of the CO(1-0) power spectrum. Our 95% upper limit on the redshift-space clustering amplitude $A_{\rm clust}\lesssim70\,\mu$K$^2$ greatly improves on the indirect upper limit of $420\,\mu$K$^2$ reported from the CO Power Spectrum Survey (COPSS) measurement at $k\sim1\,$Mpc$^{-1}$. The COMAP limit excludes a subset of models from previous literature, and constrains interpretation of the COPSS results, demonstrating the complementary nature of COMAP and interferometric CO surveys. Using line bias expectations from our priors, we also constrain the squared mean line intensity-bias product, $\langle{Tb}\rangle^2\lesssim50\,\mu$K$^2$, and the cosmic molecular gas density, $\rho_\text{H2}<2.5\times10^8\,M_\odot\,$Mpc$^{-3}$ (95% upper limits). Based on early instrument performance and our current CO signal estimates, we forecast that the five-year Pathfinder campaign will detect the CO power spectrum with overall signal-to-noise of 9-17. We present early results from the COMAP Galactic Plane Survey conducted between June 2019 and April 2021, spanning $20^\circ<\ell<40^\circ$ in Galactic longitude and $|b|<1.\!\!^{\circ}5$ in Galactic latitude with an angular resolution of $4.5^{\prime}$. The full survey will span $\ell \sim 20^{\circ}$- $220^{\circ}$ and will be the first large-scale radio continuum survey at $30$ GHz with sub-degree resolution. We present initial results from the first part of the survey, including diffuse emission and spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of HII regions and supernova remnants. Using low and high frequency surveys to constrain free-free and thermal dust emission contributions, we find evidence of excess flux density at $30\,$GHz in six regions that we interpret as anomalous microwave emission. Furthermore we model UCHII contributions using data from the $5\,$GHz CORNISH catalogue and reject this as the cause of the $30\,$GHz excess. Six known supernova remnants (SNR) are detected at $30\,$GHz, and we measure spectral indices consistent with the literature or show evidence of steepening. The flux density of the SNR W44 at $30\,$GHz is consistent with a power-law extrapolation from lower frequencies with no indication of spectral steepening in contrast with recent results from the Sardinia Radio Telescope. We also extract five hydrogen radio recombination lines to map the warm ionized gas, which can be used to estimate electron temperatures or to constrain continuum free-free emission. We present the power spectrum methodology used for the first-season COMAP analysis, and assess the quality of the current data set. The main results are derived through the Feed-feed Pseudo-Cross-Spectrum (FPXS) method, which is a robust estimator with respect to both noise modeling errors and experimental systematics. We use effective transfer functions to take into account the effects of instrumental beam smoothing and various filter operations applied during the low-level data processing. The power spectra estimated in this way have allowed us to identify a systematic error associated with one of our two scanning strategies, believed to be due to residual ground or atmospheric contamination. We omit these data from our analysis and no longer use this scanning technique for observations. We present the power spectra from our first season of observing and demonstrate that the uncertainties are integrating as expected for uncorrelated noise, with any residual systematics suppressed to a level below the noise. Using the FPXS method, and combining data on scales $k=0.051-0.62 \,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ we estimate $P_\mathrm{CO}(k) = -2.7 \pm 1.7 \times 10^4\mu\textrm{K}^2\mathrm{Mpc}^3$, the first direct 3D constraint on the clustering component of the CO(1-0) power spectrum in the literature., Comment: Paper 4 of 7 in series. 18 pages, 11 figures, as accepted in ApJ

We describe the first season COMAP analysis pipeline that converts raw detector readouts to calibrated sky maps. This pipeline implements four main steps: gain calibration, filtering, data selection, and map-making. Absolute gain calibration relies on a combination of instrumental and astrophysical sources, while relative gain calibration exploits real-time total-power variations. High efficiency filtering is achieved through spectroscopic common-mode rejection within and across receivers, resulting in nearly uncorrelated white noise within single-frequency channels. Consequently, near-optimal but biased maps are produced by binning the filtered time stream into pixelized maps; the corresponding signal bias transfer function is estimated through simulations. Data selection is performed automatically through a series of goodness-of-fit statistics, including $\chi^2$ and multi-scale correlation tests. Applying this pipeline to the first-season COMAP data, we produce a dataset with very low levels of correlated noise. We find that one of our two scanning strategies (the Lissajous type) is sensitive to residual instrumental systematics. As a result, we no longer use this type of scan and exclude data taken this way from our Season 1 power spectrum estimates. We perform a careful analysis of our data processing and observing efficiencies and take account of planned improvements to estimate our future performance. The CO Mapping Array Project (COMAP) aims to use line intensity mapping of carbon monoxide (CO) to trace the distribution and global properties of galaxies over cosmic time, back to the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). To validate the technologies and techniques needed for this goal, a Pathfinder instrument has been constructed and fielded. Sensitive to CO(1-0) emission from $z=2.4$-$3.4$ and a fainter contribution from CO(2-1) at $z=6$-8, the Pathfinder is surveying $12$ deg$^2$ in a 5-year observing campaign to detect the CO signal from $z\sim3$. Using data from the first 13 months of observing, we estimate $P_\mathrm{CO}(k) = -2.7 \pm 1.7 \times 10^4\mu\mathrm{K}^2 \mathrm{Mpc}^3$ on scales $k=0.051-0.62 \mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ - the first direct 3D constraint on the clustering component of the CO(1-0) power spectrum. Based on these observations alone, we obtain a constraint on the amplitude of the clustering component (the squared mean CO line temperature-bias product) of $\langle Tb\rangle^2<49$ $\mu$K$^2$ - nearly an order-of-magnitude improvement on the previous best measurement. These constraints allow us to rule out two models from the literature. We forecast a detection of the power spectrum after 5 years with signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) 9-17. Cross-correlation with an overlapping galaxy survey will yield a detection of the CO-galaxy power spectrum with S/N of 19. We are also conducting a 30 GHz survey of the Galactic plane and present a preliminary map. Line intensity mapping (LIM) is a new technique for tracing the global properties of galaxies over cosmic time. Detection of the very faint signals from redshifted carbon monoxide (CO), a tracer of star formation, pushes the limits of what is feasible with a total-power instrument. The CO Mapping Project (COMAP) Pathfinder is a first-generation instrument aiming to prove the concept and develop the technology for future experiments, as well as delivering early science products. With 19 receiver channels in a hexagonal focal plane arrangement on a 10.4 m antenna, and an instantaneous 26-34 GHz frequency range with 2 MHz resolution, it is ideally suited to measuring CO($J$=1-0) from $z\sim3$. In this paper we discuss strategies for designing and building the Pathfinder and the challenges that were encountered. The design of the instrument prioritized LIM requirements over those of ancillary science. After a couple of years of operation, the instrument is well understood, and the first year of data is already yielding useful science results. WALOP (Wide-Area Linear Optical Polarimeter)-South, to be mounted on the 1m SAAO telescope in South Africa, is first of the two WALOP instruments currently under development for carrying out the PASIPHAE survey. Scheduled for commissioning in the year 2021, the WALOP instruments will be used to measure the linear polarization of around $10^{6}$ stars in the SDSS-r broadband with $0.1~\%$ polarimetric accuracy, covering 4000 square degrees in the Galactic polar regions. The combined capabilities of one-shot linear polarimetry, high polarimetric accuracy ($< 0.1~\%$) and polarimetric sensitivity ($< 0.05~\%$), and a large field of view (FOV) of $35\times35~arcminutes$ make WALOP-South a unique astronomical instrument. In a single exposure, it is designed to measure the Stokes parameters $I$, $q$ and $u$ in the SDSS-r broadband and narrowband filters between $500-700~nm$. During each measurement, four images of the full field corresponding to the polarization angles of $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$ and $135^{\circ}$ will be imaged on four detectors and carrying out differential photometry on these images will yield the Stokes parameters. Major challenges in designing WALOP-South instrument include- (a) in the optical design, correcting for the spectral dispersion introduced by large split angle Wollaston Prisms used as polarization analyzers as well as aberrations from the wide field, and (b) making an optomechanical design adherent to the tolerances required to obtain good imaging and polarimetric performance under all temperature conditions as well as telescope pointing positions. The WALOP-South instrument will be mounted on the 1 m SAAO telescope in South Africa as part of the PASIPHAE program to carry out a linear imaging polarization survey of the Galactic polar regions in the optical band. Designed to achieve polarimetric sensitivity of $0.05~\%$ across a $35\times35$ arcminute field of view, it will be capable of measuring the Stokes parameters I, q and u in a single exposure in the SDSS-r broadband and narrowband filters between $0.5~{\mu}m - 0.7~{\mu}m$. For each measurement, four images of the full field corresponding to linear polarization angles of 0 deg, 45 deg, 90 deg and 135 deg in the instrument coordinate system will be created on four detectors from which the Stokes parameters can be found using differential photometry. In designing the optical system, major challenges included correcting for the dispersion introduced by large split angle Wollaston Prisms used as analysers as well as other aberrations from the entire field to obtain imaging quality PSF at the detector. PASIPHAE (the Polar-Areas Stellar Imaging in Polarization High-Accuracy Experiment) is an optopolarimetric survey aiming to measure the linear polarization from millions of stars, and use these to create a three-dimensional tomographic map of the magnetic field threading dust clouds within the Milky Way. This map will provide invaluable information for future CMB B-mode experiments searching for inflationary gravitational waves, providing unique information regarding line-of-sight integration effects. Optical polarization observations of a large number of stars at known distances, tracing the same dust that emits polarized microwaves, can map the magnetic field between them. The Gaia mission is measuring distances to a billion stars, providing an opportunity to produce a tomographic map of Galactic magnetic field directions, using optical polarization of starlight. Such a map will not only boost CMB polarization foreground removal, but it will also have a profound impact in a wide range of astrophysical research, including interstellar medium physics, high-energy astrophysics, and evolution of the Galaxy. Taking advantage of the novel technology implemented in our high-accuracy Wide-Area Linear Optical Polarimeters (WALOPs) currently under construction at IUCAA, India, we will engage in a large-scale optopolarimetric program that can meet this challenge: a survey of both northern and southern Galactic polar regions targeted by CMB experiments, covering over 10,000 square degrees, which will measure linear optical polarization of over 360 stars per square degree (over 3.5 million stars, a 1000-fold increase over the state of the art). The Planck Early Release Compact Source Catalogue (ERCSC) includes nine lists of highly reliable sources, individually extracted at each of the nine Planck frequency channels. To facilitate the study of the Planck sources, especially their spectral behaviour across the radio/infrared frequencies, we provide a "bandmerged" catalogue of the ERCSC sources. This catalogue consists of 15191 entries, with 79 sources detected in all nine frequency channels of Planck and 6818 sources detected in only one channel. We describe the bandmerging algorithm, including the various steps used to disentangle sources in confused regions. The multi-frequency matching allows us to develop spectral energy distributions of sources between 30 and 857 GHz, in particular across the 100 GHz band, where the energetically important CO J=1->0 line enters the Planck bandpass. We find ~3-5sigma evidence for contribution to the 100 GHz intensity from foreground CO along the line of sight to 147 sources with |b|>30 deg. The median excess contribution is 4.5+/-0.9 percent of their measured 100 GHz flux density which cannot be explained by calibration or beam uncertainties. This translates to 0.5+/-0.1 K km s^{-1} of CO which must be clumped on the scale of the Planck 100 GHz beam, i.e., ~10 arcmin. If this is due to a population of low mass (~15 Msun) molecular gas clumps, the total mass in these clumps may be more than 2000 Msun. Further, high-spatial-resolution, ground-based observations of the high-latitude sky will help shed light on the origin of this diffuse, clumpy CO emission., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, MNRAS in press

We present results from four years of twice-weekly 15 GHz radio monitoring of about 1500 blazars with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory 40 m telescope. Using the intrinsic modulation index to measure variability amplitude, we find that, with $>\!6\sigma$ significance, the radio variability of radio-selected gamma-ray-loud blazars is stronger than that of gamma-ray-quiet blazars. Our extended data set also includes at least 21 months of data for all AGN with `clean' associations in the Fermi Large Area Telescope First AGN catalogue, 1LAC. With these additional data we examine the radio variability properties of a gamma-ray-selected blazar sample. Within this sample, we find no evidence for a connection between radio variability amplitude and optical classification. In contrast, for our radio-selected sample we find that the BL Lac object subpopulation is more variable than the flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) subpopulation. Radio variability is found to correlate with the synchrotron peak frequency, with low- and intermediate-synchrotron-peaked blazars varying less than high-synchrotron-peaked ones. We find evidence for a significant negative correlation between redshift and radio variability among bright FSRQs., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures. Accepted by MNRAS

The Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI) is a telescope specifically designed for high sensitivity measurements of low-surface-brightness features at cm-wavelength and has unique, important capabilities. It consists of two interferometer arrays operating over 13.5-18 GHz that image structures on scales of 0.5-10 arcmin with very low systematics. The Small Array (AMI-SA; ten 3.7-m antennas) couples very well to Sunyaev-Zel'dovich features from galaxy clusters and to many Galactic features. The Large Array (AMI-LA; eight 13-m antennas) has a collecting area ten times that of the AMI-SA and longer baselines, crucially allowing the removal of the effects of confusing radio point sources from regions of low surface-brightness, extended emission. Moreover AMI provides fast, deep object surveying and allows monitoring of large numbers of objects. Since late 2007, we have been monitoring a large sample of known and likely gamma-ray-loud blazars at 15 GHz twice per week with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) 40 m Telescope. Our initial sample included the 1158 sources above declination -20 degrees from the Candidate Gamma-Ray Blazar Survey (CGRaBS), and we have since added nearly 400 more sources, including all blazars associated with Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) detections in the First AGN Catalog (1LAC). Here, we describe the new sample and present results for 2008 through early 2011. Using statistical likelihood analyses, we compare the variability amplitude for various sub-populations within our sample. These include comparisons of gamma-ray-loud versus gamma-ray-quiet objects, BL Lac objects versus flat-spectrum radio quasars, and a study of the variability amplitude trend with redshift. We also describe KuPol, the new digital Ku-band receiver being constructed for the 40 m telescope. We describe an upgrade to the Cosmic Background Imager instrument to increase its surface brightness sensitivity at small angular scales. The upgrade consisted of replacing the thirteen 0.9-m antennas with 1.4-m antennas incorporating a novel combination of design features, which provided excellent sidelobe and spillover performance for low manufacturing cost. Off-the-shelf spun primaries were used, and the secondary mirrors were oversized and shaped relative to a standard Cassegrain in order to provide an optimum compromise between aperture efficiency and low spillover lobes. Low-order distortions in the primary mirrors were compensated for by custom machining of the secondary mirrors. The secondaries were supported on a transparent dielectric foam cone to minimize scattering. The antennas were tested in the complete instrument, and the beam shape and spillover noise contributions were as expected. We demonstrate the performance of the telescope and the inter-calibration with the previous system using observations of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect in the cluster Abell 1689. The Large Area Telescope (LAT) aboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope provides an unprecedented opportunity to study gamma-ray blazars. To capitalize on this opportunity, beginning in late 2007, about a year before the start of LAT science operations, we began a large-scale, fast-cadence 15 GHz radio monitoring program with the 40-m telescope at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO). This program began with the 1158 northern (declination>-20 deg) sources from the Candidate Gamma-ray Blazar Survey (CGRaBS) and now encompasses over 1500 sources, each observed twice per week with a ~4 mJy (minimum) and 3% (typical) uncertainty. Here, we describe this monitoring program and our methods, and present radio light curves from the first two years (2008 and 2009). As a first application, we combine these data with a novel measure of light curve variability amplitude, the intrinsic modulation index, through a likelihood analysis to examine the variability properties of subpopulations of our sample. We demonstrate that, with high significance (7-sigma), gamma-ray-loud blazars detected by the LAT during its first 11 months of operation vary with about a factor of two greater amplitude than do the gamma-ray-quiet blazars in our sample. We also find a significant (3-sigma) difference between variability amplitude in BL Lacertae objects and flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), with the former exhibiting larger variability amplitudes. Finally, low-redshift (z<1) FSRQs are found to vary more strongly than high-redshift FSRQs, with 3-sigma significance. These findings represent an important step toward understanding why some blazars emit gamma-rays while others, with apparently similar properties, remain silent., Comment: 23 pages, 24 figures. The C-Band All-Sky Survey (C-BASS) aims to produce sensitive, all-sky maps of diffuse Galactic emission at 5 GHz in total intensity and linear polarization. These maps will be used (with other surveys) to separate the several astrophysical components contributing to microwave emission, and in particular will allow an accurate map of synchrotron emission to be produced for the subtraction of foregrounds from measurements of the polarized Cosmic Microwave Background. How did the universe evolve? The fine angular scale (l>1000) temperature and polarization anisotropies in the CMB are a Rosetta stone for understanding the evolution of the universe. Through detailed measurements one may address everything from the physics of the birth of the universe to the history of star formation and the process by which galaxies formed. One may in addition track the evolution of the dark energy and discover the net neutrino mass. We are at the dawn of a new era in which hundreds of square degrees of sky can be mapped with arcminute resolution and sensitivities measured in microKelvin. Acquiring these data requires the use of special purpose telescopes such as the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), located in Chile, and the South Pole Telescope (SPT). These new telescopes are outfitted with a new generation of custom mm-wave kilo-pixel arrays.
