In recent years, jaundice disease in farmed hybrid catfish in Thailand has caused high levels of mortalities. Affected fish are lethargic and anorexic and show yellow pigmentation of the skin and gills. Internally, the spleen, kidney and gall bladder are enlarged, and the spleen, kidney, liver and body fat are a pale yellow colour. Most fish contain a yellow ascitic fluid in their abdomen. Histological examination of tissues from diseased fish revealed heavy deposits of haemosiderin and ceroid in the spleen, kidney and liver. Haematological measurements showed that haematocrit values, RBC count, haemoglobin concentration. MCH and MCHC were significantly decreased in affected fish while MCV, total bilirubin and direct reacting bilirubin were significantly increased. The results indicate that the fish are suffering from a haemolytic anaemia associated with lipoid liver degeneration. The disease is thought to be due to the feeding of rancid chicken viscera. Snakeheads, Channa striatus (Bloch), were inoculated with a spore suspension of the specific pathogenic Aphanomyces, isolated from fish affected by epizootic ulcerative syndrome (EUS), in South East Asia. Fish were held at three different temperatures: 19, 26 and 31 °C. Histological changes induced by the infection are described. In the early stages of the disease, degenerative changes were observed in all samples, but inflammatory infiltrate was much more marked in fish kept at 26 and 31°C. By 8 days post-injection, extensive mycotic granulomatosis was observed in the samples kept at 26 and 31°C. The fish kept at 19°C developed a severe invasive myonecrosis with limited macrophage response. From 14 to 28 days post-injection, healing became well established at 26 and 31 °C and surviving fish kept at these temperatures recovered completely by 28 days. The lesion was still progressing at 21 days post-injection in fish kept at 19°C, and all such fish succumbed by this time. Thus, mortalities in the fish kept at 19 °C were considerably higher than in the groups of fish kept at 26 and 31 °C. Introduction: Regarding the satisfaction of patients efficiency and outcome of surgery on the nasal septum and the turbinates regularly is the topic of controversial discussion and occasionally some health authorities doubt there is an indication for these procedures in general. Subjective and objective evaluation of surgical outcome do not necessarily match in all cases., Methods: A standardized questionnaire was sent to patients having undergone surgery on the nasal septum and the turbinates 33-45 months ago at a university hospital and a non-university hospital. Topics (10 all together) were e. g.: nasal aeration, sense of smell, rhinorrhea, snoring, general condition. Statistic significance of each parameter was verified., Results: 138 questionnaires were reviewed. 82% of the candidates reported better aeration of the nose after surgery. 71% stated to have benefited from the operation. A relevant positive effect on snoring, rhinorrhea, headache and sense of smell could not be proved. The results did no different whether surgery was performed at a university hospital or at a non-university-hospital. Older patients seem to profit more from the procedure than younger ones., Discussion: The survey clearly shows, that surgery on the nasal septum with turbinoplasty has a positive effect on the nasal aeration and the general condition. Therefore its performance is well justified when after careful verification of the pre-conditions the indication for surgery is given.

Virulence factors were compared in Aeromonas species isolated from clinically normal and septicaemic farmed frogs from Thailand. Haemolysin activities against frog erythrocytes were significantly different within the collection of aeromonads. Groups of high haemolytic activity (unspeciated Aeromonas, Au), moderate haemolytic activity (A. hydrophila), and low haemolytic activity (A. veronii biovar sobria, A. veronii biovar veronii, A. caviae, A. schubertii) were noted. DNA colony hybridisation studies revealed that Au isolates possessed a haemolysin gene (ASH1) which was not present in any of the other Thai aeromonads or type strains tested. Elastinolytic activity was demonstrated in 90% of the Au isolates, 60% of the A. hydrophila isolates and in none of the other motile aeromonads. The cytotoxic activity of the Aeromonas isolates varied according to the source of cells used in the assays. Cells from rainbow trout were extremely sensitive to Au toxins but less so to toxins produced by other species. In contrast mammalian cells showed very little sensitivity to Au toxins but were more sensitive to toxins produced by A. hydrophila. Selection of suitable assay substrates is therefore important.

Quality control exposures of commercial alpha-track radon monitors have been conducted approximately weekly at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Grand Junction Projects Office since early 1987 in support of DOE remedial action programs. The results of these exposures provide a historical record of the comparative performances of these radon monitors.

Annual average indoor 222Rn concentrations in 40 residences in and around Grand Junction, CO, have been measured repeatedly since 1984 using commercial alpha-track monitors (ATM) deployed for successive 12-mo time periods. Data obtained provide a quantitative measure of the year-to-year variations in the annual average Rn concentrations in these structures over this 6-y period. A mean coefficient of variation of 25% was observed for the year-to-year variability of the measurements at 25 sampling stations for which complete data were available. Individual coefficients of variation at the various stations ranged from a low of 7.7% to a high of 51%. The observed mean coefficient of variation includes contributions due to the variability in detector response as well as the true year-to-year variation in the annual average Rn concentrations. Factoring out the contributions from the measured variability in the response of the detectors used, the actual year-to-year variability of the annual average Rn concentrations was approximately 22%.

The absence of centromeric bands in the karyotype of Felis catus is confirmed. It is also confirmed that no satellite band is visible in CsCl density gradients. However, a satellite is observed both by recentrifuging the fraction of the DNA that bands at high density in CsCl and by using netropsin to enhance the resolution of a CsCl gradient containing total F. catus DNA. The satellite, about 0.5% of total DNA, was isolated by repeated centrifugation in CsCl alone and in CsCl with netropsin. Netropsin was removed and a pure satellite DNA obtained. The reassociation kinetics (C0t1/2 less than 10(-3) M . s) show that the satellite is of the simple sequence type and hence a candidate for centromeric heterochromatin. Its cytological localisation awaits in situ hybridisation experiments.
