1. Observation of electromagnetic filamentary structures produced by the Weibel instability in laser-driven plasmas

Abstract

We present experimental observations of electron-scale structures in an expanding high-energy-density (HED) plasma generated with a modest intensity $\sim 2 \times 10^{14}$ W/cm$^2$, $\sim1$ ns laser. The observed structures have wavelengths ($\sim 150-220 \mu m$) and growth rates ($\sim 0.4-1.0$ ns$^{-1}$) consistent with an electron-driven Weibel instability where the anisotropy in the electron distribution is small, $A\sim 0.002$. This instability is found to be a better match to the observed phenomena than other typical field-generation mechanisms found in HED plasmas, including counter-streaming ion Weibel and magnetothermal instabilities. These observations experimentally demonstrate for the first time that the electron Weibel instability must be considered alongside other magnetic field generation and amplification mechanisms in expanding ablation plasmas, which are ubiquitous in HED research. They also provide physics insight into the generation of magnetic fields in large-scale astrophysical plasmas. Abstract

Magnetic reconnection is a ubiquitous and fundamental process in plasmas by which magnetic fields change their topology and release magnetic energy. Despite decades of research, the physics governing the reconnection process in many parameter regimes remains controversial. Contemporary reconnection theories predict that long, narrow current sheets are susceptible to the tearing instability and split into isolated magnetic islands (or plasmoids), resulting in an enhanced reconnection rate. While several experimental observations of plasmoids in the regime of low- to intermediate-$\beta$ (where $\beta$ is the ratio of plasma thermal pressure to magnetic pressure) have been made, there is a relative lack of experimental evidence for plasmoids in the high-$\beta$ reconnection environments which are typical in many space and astrophysical contexts. Here, we report the observation of strong experimental evidence for plasmoid formation and dynamics in laser-driven high-$\beta$ reconnection experiments.

Abstract

Image plates (IPs), or phosphor storage screens, are a technology employed frequently in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and high energy density plasma (HEDP) diagnostics because of their sensitivity to many types of radiation, including, x rays, protons, alphas, beta particles, and neutrons. Prior studies characterizing IPs are predicated on the signal level remaining below the scanner saturation threshold. Since the scanning process removes some signal from the IP via photostimulated luminescence, repeatedly scanning an IP can bring the signal level below the scanner saturation threshold. This process, in turn, raises concerns about the signal response of IPs after an arbitrary number of scans and whether such a process yields, for example, a constant ratio of signal between the nth and n + 1st scan. Here, the sensitivity of IPs is investigated when scanned multiple times. It is demonstrated that the ratio of signal decay is not a constant with the number of scans and that the signal decay depends on the x-ray energy. As such, repeatedly scanning an IP with a mixture of signal types (e.g., x ray, neutron, and protons) enables ICF and HEDP diagnostics employing IPs to better isolate a particular signal type. Abstract

Image plates (IPs) are a quickly recoverable and reusable radiation detector often used to measure proton and x-ray fluence in laser-driven experiments. Recently, IPs have been used in a proton radiography detector stack on the OMEGA laser, a diagnostic historically implemented with CR-39, or radiochromic film. The IPs used in this and other diagnostics detect charged particles, neutrons, and x-rays indiscriminately. IPs detect radiation using a photo-stimulated luminescence (PSL) material, often phosphor, in which electrons are excited to metastable states by ionizing radiation. Protons at MeV energies deposit energy deeper into the IP compared with x rays below ∼20 keV due to the Bragg peak present for protons. This property is exploited to discriminate between radiation types. Doses of mono-energetic protons between 1.7 and 14 MeV are applied to IPs using the MIT linear electrostatic ion accelerator. This paper presents the results from consecutive scans of IPs irradiated with different proton energies. The PSL ratios between subsequent scans are shown to depend on proton energy, with higher energy protons having lower PSL ratios for each scan. This finding is separate from the known energy dependence in the absolute sensitivity of IPs. The results can be compared to complimentary work on x rays, showing a difference between protons and x rays, forging a path to discriminate between proton and x-ray fluence in mixed radiation environments. Abstract

Proton radiography is an essential diagnostic for studying magnetic fields in high energy density physics experiments. Protons are born in a fusion implosion, traverse the plasma, and are detected on CR-39 solid state nuclear track detectors. Here, it is shown that there is an intrinsic non-uniformity in ∼ 15 MeV D3He proton radiography data. The increasing angle between the proton trajectory and the center of the detector results in the proton traveling through more detector stack material. As the protons travel through more material and lose energy, the proton energy spectrum gets wider. Protons at the lower end of the spectrum can therefore be lost. The nominal filtering results in protons being ranged out at large angles, causing the intrinsic non-uniformity. This angular effect is confirmed with both OMEGA experiments and Geant4 simulations. It is found that reducing the filtering between the pieces of CR-39 in the detector stack mitigates this effect. Results from accelerator experiments show that this reduced filtering does not impact the detection efficiency of the CR-39. Accounting for this intrinsic fluence non-uniformity is essential for magnetic field reconstruction techniques using proton radiographs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Radiochromic film (RCF) and image plates (IPs) are both commonly used detectors in diagnostics fielded at inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and high-energy-density physics (HEDP) research facilities. Due to the intense x-ray background in all ICF/HEDP experiments, accurately calibrating the optical density of RCF as a function of x-ray dose, and the photostimulated luminescence per photon of IPs as a function of x-ray energy, is necessary for interpreting experimental results. Various measurements of the sensitivity curve of different IPs to x rays have been performed [Izumi et al., Proc. SPIE 8850, 885006 (2013) and Rosenberg et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 90(1), 013506 (2019)]; however, calibrating RCF is a tedious process that depends on factors such as the orientation in which the RCF is scanned in the film scanner and the batch of RCF used. These issues can be mitigated by cross-calibrating RCF with IPs to enable the use of IPs for the determination of dose on the RCF without scanning the RCF. Here, the first cross-calibration of RCF with IPs to quasi-monoenergetic titanium, copper, and molybdenum K-line x rays is presented. It is found that the IP-inferred dose rates on the RCF for the Ti and Mo x rays agree well with the measured dose rates, while the IP-inferred dose rate for the Cu x rays is larger than the measured dose rate by ∼ 2 ×. Abstract

We present the discovery of a light echo from SN 2007af, a normal Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) in NGC 5584. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images taken three years post explosion reveal two separate echoes; an outer echo and extended central region, which we propose as an unresolved inner echo. Multiple images were obtained in the F160W, F350LP, F555W, and F814W using the Wide Field Camera 3. If the outer echo is produced by an interstellar dust sheet perpendicular to the line of sight, it is located ~800 pc in front of the SN. The dust for the inner echo is 0.45 pc < d < 90 pc away from the SN. The inner echo color is consistent with typical interstellar dust wavelength-dependent scattering cross-sections, while the outer echo color does not match the predictions. Both dust sheets, if in the foreground, are optically thin for scattering, with the outer echo sheet thickness consistent with the inferred extinction from peak brightness. Whether the inner echo is from interstellar or circumstellar dust is ambiguous. Abstract

Electron-temperature (T e) measurements in implosions provide valuable diagnostic information, as T e is negligibly affected by residual flows and other non-thermal effects unlike ion-temperature inferred from a fusion product spectrum. In OMEGA cryogenic implosions, measurement of T e(t) can be used to investigate effects related to time-resolved hot-spot energy balance. The newly implemented phase-2 Particle X-ray Temporal Diagnostic (PXTD) utilizes four fast-rise (∼15 ps) scintillator-channels with distinct x-ray filtering. Titanium and stepped aluminum filtering were chosen to maximize detector sensitivity in the 10–20 keV range, as it has been shown that these x rays have similar density and temperature weighting to the emitted deuterium–tritium fusion neutrons (DTn) from OMEGA Cryo-DT implosions. High quality data have been collected from warm implosions at OMEGA. These data have been used to infer spatially integrated T e(t) with <10% uncertainty at peak emission. Nuclear and x-ray emission histories are measured with 10 ps relative timing uncertainty for x rays and DTn and 12 ps for x rays and deuterium-[Formula: see text] protons (D3Hep). A future upgrade to the system will enable spatially integrated T e(t) with 40 ps time-resolution from cryogenic DT implosions.

Abstract

Charged particle spectrometry is a critical diagnostic to study inertial-confinement-fusion plasmas and high energy density plasmas. The OMEGA Laser Facility has two fixed magnetic charged particle spectrometers (CPSs) to measure MeV-ions. In situ calibration of these spectrometers was carried out using 241Am and 226Ra alpha emitters. The alpha emission spectrum from the sources was measured independently using surface-barrier detectors (SBDs). The energy dispersion and broadening of the CPS systems were determined by comparing the CPS measured alpha spectrum to that of the SBD. The calibration method significantly constrains the energy dispersion, which was previously obtained through the measurement of charged particle fusion products. Overall, a small shift of 100 keV was observed between previous and the calibration done in this work.

Abstract

For more than half a century, researchers around the world have been engaged in attempts to achieve fusion ignition as a proof of principle of various fusion concepts. Following the Lawson criterion, an ignited plasma is one where the fusion heating power is high enough to overcome all the physical processes that cool the fusion plasma, creating a positive thermodynamic feedback loop with rapidly increasing temperature. In inertially confined fusion, ignition is a state where the fusion plasma can begin "burn propagation" into surrounding cold fuel, enabling the possibility of high energy gain. While "scientific breakeven" (i.e., unity target gain) has not yet been achieved (here target gain is 0.72, 1.37 MJ of fusion for 1.92 MJ of laser energy), this Letter reports the first controlled fusion experiment, using laser indirect drive, on the National Ignition Facility to produce capsule gain (here 5.8) and reach ignition by nine different formulations of the Lawson criterion.

Abstract

Charged particle spectrometry is a critical diagnostic to study inertial-confinement-fusion plasmas and high energy density plasmas. The OMEGA Laser Facility has two fixed magnetic charged particle spectrometers (CPSs) to measure MeV-ions. In situ calibration of these spectrometers was carried out using 241Am and 226Ra alpha emitters. The alpha emission spectrum from the sources was measured independently using surface-barrier detectors (SBDs). The energy dispersion and broadening of the CPS systems were determined by comparing the CPS measured alpha spectrum to that of the SBD. The calibration method significantly constrains the energy dispersion, which was previously obtained through the measurement of charged particle fusion products. Overall, a small shift of 100 keV was observed between previous and the calibration done in this work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Mass spectrometry has become an indispensable analytical tool for studies related to the structure and function of peptides and proteins. The variety of analytical methods, the range of instrument capabilities, and the complexity of the data obtained make it difficult for most laboratories to acquire the necessary expertise to make optimal use of their instrumentation.We describe an expert system approach to automating specific types of analyses in a way that makes it easier to transfer the capability to do specific experiments to other laboratories. Central to the approach is the creation of a computer program (ie, a virtual instrument) that controls the operation of physical components, analyzes incoming data, automatically adjusts instrument parameters to achieve the goal of the analysis, and reports the results. By interacting with the mass spectrometer through the computer operating system, it is possible to add useful functions to the system without altering any of the manufacturer-controlled data system software. The usefulness of this approach is illustrated by the automation of experiments to confirm the sequences of synthetic peptides and perform LC/MS/MS peak parking experiments and real-time database searches.

Abstract

LITERATURE The literature on the reflex control of the cardia and lower esophagus is rather meager, in view of the importance of this question in connection with spasms of the cardia and esophagus in man. Most of the work has been done in connection with the deglutition and vomiting acts.It was reported in a previous communication that the cardia and the lower end of the esophagus are provided with motor and inhibitory efferents both via the vagi and the splanchnic nerves.1 We now know that in the swallowing act the vagi efferents are controlled by afferent impulses both from the pharynx (primary peristalsis) and the wall of the esophagus (secondary peristalsis).2 Furthermore, the cardia and the part of the esophagus made up of smooth musculature and Auerbach's nervous plexus are capable of local coordination, that is, local automatism or reflex action, independent of afferent and efferent connections with the

44. PRELIMINARY REPORT ON SODIUM NITRITE THERAPY IN SEASICKNESS

Abstract

During a study of the effects of blood pressure on the labyrinthine function, we were impressed by the depressant effect of sodium nitrite on the vestibular responses. The results of these studies are in process of preparation for publication. In these studies it was shown that by lowering normal blood pressure to between 95 and 105 mm. of mercury the nystagmus after rotation was greatly diminished, and past pointing was also much diminished and even disappeared entirely in some instances.Believing that seasickness is due mostly, if not completely, to overstimulation of the vestibule, we felt that the nitrites offered a direct attack at the long sought but never attained cure for the terrible malady of the ocean voyage. Consequently, as one of us (D. B. H.) was about to cross the Atlantic, we decided to put the theory to the test. Fate was against us on the trip across for no one suffered mal de mer.

Abstract

Measurement of proton spectra is an important diagnostic for a variety of high energy density physics experiments. Current diagnostics are either not designed to capture the spectrum of low-energy protons or are unsuitable for high debris experiments. To bridge the gap, a new CR-39 based compact magnetic spectrometer (MagSpec) has been developed to measure proton spectra in the 1-20 MeV energy range, with a particular focus on the low-energy (1-6 MeV) spectrum, for use in experiments at the OMEGA Laser Facility and the National Ignition Facility (NIF). In the MagSpec diagnostic, protons of different energies are dispersed as they pass through a magnetic field before impinging on a differentially filtered CR-39 surface, resulting in a spatial distribution of CR-39 tracks that corresponds to the energy spectrum. 46. Quantifying the effects of neutron fluence on proton signal retention in CR-39.

Abstract

This paper reports on investigations on the impact of higher neutron fluences on the detection efficiency of protons with CR-39, a charged particle track detector. CR-39 is widely used as a diagnostic for inertial fusion applications and is an integral component of numerous particle diagnostics at the OMEGA laser facility and National Ignition Facility. As experiments continue to produce higher and higher yields, existing diagnostics are impacted by higher particle fluences than they were originally designed for. This paper presents data from experiments measuring proton signal on pieces of CR-39 with different levels of neutron fluence with two different etch times. The experiments show a decrease in signal recovery with increased neutron fluence, which is exacerbated at longer etch times. At 3 h etch time, data suggest a 17% ± 7% signal loss at 1.3 × 105 neutron-induced tracks per cm2 and a 67% ± 21% loss at 6 h etch time. Careful signal isolation techniques can recover most of the proton tracks even with moderate neutron fluence., (© 2024 Author(s). 47. Early mobility and family partnerships in the intensive care unit: A scoping review of reviews.

Abstract

Background: Critical illness significantly impacts the well-being of patients and families. Previous studies show that family members are willing to participate in patient care. Involving families in early mobility interventions may contribute to improved recovery and positive outcomes for patients and families., Aim: In this scoping review, we investigated early mobility interventions for critically ill patients evaluated in randomized controlled trials and the extent to which family engagement in those interventions are reported in the literature., Study Design: In this scoping review of reviews, EMBASE, CINAHL, PubMed and Cochrane Central databases were searched in October 2019 and updated in February 2022. Systematic reviews were included and assessed using A MeaSurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) 2. Data were synthesized using a narrative approach. PRISMA-ScR guidelines were adhered to for reporting., Results: Thirty-three reviews were included which described a range of early mobility interventions for critically ill patients; none explicitly mentioned family engagement. Almost half of the reviews were of low or critically low quality. Insufficient detail of early mobility interventions prompted information to be extracted from the primary studies., Conclusions: There are a range of early mobility interventions for critically ill patients but few involve families. Given the positive outcomes of family participation, and family willingness to participate in care, there is a need to explore the feasibility and acceptability of family participation in early mobility interventions., Relevance to Clinical Practice: Family engagement in early mobility interventions for critically ill patients should be encouraged and supported. On December 5, 2022, an indirect drive fusion implosion on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) achieved a target gain G&#95;{target} of 1.5. This is the first laboratory demonstration of exceeding "scientific breakeven" (or G&#95;{target}>1) where 2.05 MJ of 351 nm laser light produced 3.1 MJ of total fusion yield, a result which significantly exceeds the Lawson criterion for fusion ignition as reported in a previous NIF implosion [H. Abu-Shawareb et al. (Indirect Drive ICF Collaboration), Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 075001 (2022)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.129.075001]. This achievement is the culmination of more than five decades of research and gives proof that laboratory fusion, based on fundamental physics principles, is possible. This Letter reports on the target, laser, design, and experimental advancements that led to this result.

Abstract

Charged particle spectrometry is a critical diagnostic to study inertial-confinement-fusion plasmas and high energy density plasmas. The OMEGA Laser Facility has two fixed magnetic charged particle spectrometers (CPSs) to measure MeV-ions. In situ calibration of these spectrometers was carried out using 241 Am and 226 Ra alpha emitters. The alpha emission spectrum from the sources was measured independently using surface-barrier detectors (SBDs). The energy dispersion and broadening of the CPS systems were determined by comparing the CPS measured alpha spectrum to that of the SBD. The calibration method significantly constrains the energy dispersion, which was previously obtained through the measurement of charged particle fusion products. Overall, a small shift of 100 keV was observed between previous and the calibration done in this work.

50. A new tri-particle backlighter for high-energy-density plasmas (invited).

Abstract

A new tri-particle mono-energetic backlighter based on laser-driven implosions of DT 3 He gas-filled capsules has been implemented at the OMEGA laser. This platform, an extension of the original D 3 He backlighter platform, generates 9.5 MeV deuterons from the T 3 He reaction in addition to 14.7 and 3.0 MeV protons from the deuterium and helium-3 reactants. The monoenergetic 14.7 and 3.0 MeV protons have been used with success at OMEGA and the NIF for both radiography and stopping-power studies. There are several advantages of having a third particle to diagnose plasma conditions: an extra time-of-flight-separated radiograph and an improved ability to discern between electric and magnetic fields. In cases where the 3.0 MeV protons cannot penetrate an experiment, the benefit of the additional 9.5 MeV deuterons is magnified. This capability is well-suited for NIF experiments, where large fields and plasma densities often preclude useful 3.0 MeV proton data. The advantages are demonstrated with radiographs of OMEGA plasmas with magnetic and electric fields. Tests using backlighter-scale 420 μm diameter thin glass capsules validate the platform's extended backlighting capability. The performance characteristics of this backlighter, such as source size and timing, are discussed.
