Abstract

The article describes Bond CL hard red winter wheat cultivar, which was developed by the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station. Bond CL was released to seed producers in August 2004 based on its resistance to the original North American biotype, tolerance to imazamox and adaptation to dryland production in eastern Colorado. It is a doubled-haploid line developed using the wheat X maize hybridization method from the cross Yumar. And Bond CL contained a patented herbicide tolerance trait owned by BASF Corp. that confers tolerance to imidazolinone herbicides.

Abstract

This article presents information on the registration of Hatcher wheat. Hatcher hard red winter wheat was developed by the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station and released to seed producers in August 2004. Hatcher was released based on its resistance to the original North American biotype, designated as Biotype 1 of the Russian wheat aphid, and its adaptation to nonirrigated production in eastern Colorado and the west-central Great Plains. Hatcher was named in honor of the late E.L. Shug Hatcher, a former Colorado Wheat Industry leader who farmed near Lamar, Colorado. Hatcher is an awned, white-chaffed, medium maturity, semidwarf hard red winter wheat. Hatcher has medium maturity, 144 d to heading from January 1, and is 4 d later than Prairie Red and 1 d later than Yumar and Ankor. Plant height of Hatcher is short, and is 1.5 cm shorter than Prairie Red and 4.1 cm shorter than Yumar and Ankor. Coleoptile length of Hatcher is shorter than that of Prairie Red and Ankor but longer than that of Yumar. Shattering tolerance of Hatcher is good, slightly less than Ankor but better than Prairie Red and Yumar.

Abstract

The article describes Protection hard red winter wheat cultivar, which was developed by the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station. Protection was released to seed producers in August 2004 based on its tolerance to imazamox herbicide, competitive yield and improved bread baking quality. It is an awned, bronze-chaffed and early-maturing semidwarf hard red winter wheat that matures early. On the basis of field evaluations under natural infection in Colorado, Protection is moderately resistant to stem rust, susceptible to leaf rust, and resistant to stripe rust.

Abstract

Wheat, Triticum aestivum (L. ), plant response to Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), infestation varies at different plantgrowth stages. Also, the range of climatic zones is great over the distribution of the Russian wheat aphid in the United States. Therefore the effects of wheat growth stage and climate on Russian wheat aphid damage potential were determined. Experiments were conducted in 4 states (Texas, Colorado, Montana, and Washington) encompassing the Great Plains and Pacific Northwest to determine the damage potential andeconomic injury level for the Russian wheat aphid. The growth stagesincluded 2 leaves (Zadoks growth stage 12), 2 tillers (stage 22), beginning of spring regrowth (stage 29), 1st node (stage 31), and preboot (stage 45). Three levels of Russian wheat aphid infestation were used: 5, 10, and 20 aphids per plant for stage 12 plants and 20, 40, and 80 aphids at all other growth stages. Also, there was a no Russian wheat aphid check treatment. This paper reports on damage potentialdata. Russian wheat aphid densities and percentage of the tillers that were infested or damaged were lower in the fall than in the spring. Infestations in the fall reduced bulk grain weight and number of spikes per plant. These losses were higher in the northern states than in Texas. We suspect that this difference was due to a reduction in winter hardiness in the northern states. In the spring, Russian wheat aphid damage resulted in a reduction in number of seeds per spike, 200-seed weight, and foliage dry weight. Plants damaged in the spring produced as many spikes as uninfested plants. However, the quantity and quality of seed were reduced by spring infestations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
