Introduction: Salivary gland tumors represent a group of heterogeneous lesions. In Serbia, data on salivary gland tumors, their incidence, and the distribution of certain histopathological types are scarce. Aim was to present data on salivary gland tumours in Southeast Serbia. Material and Methods: A clinical retrospective study was used to analyse data from the medical records of patients with salivary gland tumors treated at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of the Dental Clinic in Niš, from 2012 to 2014. Results: In the case of benign tumors, Warthin's tumor occurred more often in men, and pleomorphic adenoma in women. Considering the significantly lower number of malignant tumors, no statistically significant differences in their frequency of occurrence between men and women were found. In the small salivary glands, the incidence of tumors was significantly lower, and no statistically significant differences were found in the involvement of individual glands. Salivary gland tumors occurred with a similar frequency in men and women of all ages. Malignant tumors were more common in the elderly, while benign tumors occurred more often in the middle decades of life. The occurrence of benign and malignant tumors did not differ between the sexes. Conclusion: Benign tumors of the salivary glands are far more common than malignant ones, and that both occur more often in the large salivary glands. The most common benign tumors are Warthin's tumor and pleomorphic adenoma, and the most common malignant tumors are mucoepidermoid carcinoma and salivary duct carcinoma in the general population.

Introduction: Salivary gland tumors are extremely rare neoplasms. Given their pathohistological image, these tumors represent a great diagnostic challenge. The aim of our study was to differentiate these three tumor types by applying the immunohistochemical and morphometric analysis. Material and Methods: The entire study was conducted at the Center for Pathology and Pathological Anatomy in Niš. The study included 44 tumors, 20 pleomorphic adenomas, 12 basal cells adenomas and 12 polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinomas. The expression of Ki67, p53 and HER-2 antigens, as proliferation markers, was analyzed. The differential diagnostics also included the analysis of the expression of CEA, EMA, GFAP, p63, vimentin, CK14, α-SMA, S-100 protein and WT1 antigen. The morphometric analysis was done in the program pack 'ImageJ' version 1.43u. The statistical analysis of data was done in the program pack SPSS 15.0. Results: Neoplastic cells in pleomorphic adenoma showed a strong expression of GFAP (20/20), p63 (20/20), WT1 (20/20), vimentin (18/20) and S100 (16/20). Diffuse expression of CK14 (12/12) was present in the group of 12 polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinomas. S-100, vimentin and EMA were absolutely expressed, whereas α-SMA was negative. Basal cell adenoma showed negativity to S-100, CEA, p63 and vimentin. The analysis of the proliferative Ki67 index values pointed to a statistically significant difference in the pleomorphic adenoma group, which was associated with a frequent recurrence of this benign tumor. The analysis of morphometric characteristics showed higher values in the polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma group, but statistically significant differences were found only for the Feret diameter and the integrated optical density (p < 0.05). As for the basal cell adenoma group, tumor cells showed statistically higher values for the integrated optical density (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Apart from the basic micromorphological analysis, the differential analysis of salivary gland tumors also requires the immunohistochemical analysis as well as the monitoring of morphometric characteristics of these tumors' nuclei.

Introduction. Cleft lip and cleft palate are relatively common congenital deformities. Patients with clefts require multidisciplinary treatment approach and a team which may include a maxillofacial surgeon, orthodontist, speech therapist, pediatrician, prosthetician, psychologist, as well as the relevant experts who may be of help in restoring the function of the orofacial system. Case report. The paper describes a case of prosthetic rehabilitation of an edentulous female patient with oronasal fistula, after multiple surgical interventions performed in various medical institutions in order to treat her cleft primary and secondary palate. Conclusion. Well planned prosthetic treatment of adult patients with cleft palate and total edentulousness can produce satisfactory results in view of both function and esthetics.

In the second half of the 20 century, echosonography has been used in many medical specialties. In 1992 and 1993 highfrequencies echosonography was used in the examination of irritant and allergic skin lesions in order to examine the effects of different therapeuthical agents on the skin lesions [1-4]. Hoffmann used highfrequencies echosonography in the examination of healing of skin lesions [3]. By their incidence skin tumors are the largest group of newly discovered tumors, and their usual location is on the face [5-7]. By clinical examination it is not possible to precisely determine the depth of tumor border; therefore, the radically performed surgical excision is the only correct surgical treatment. The aim of this study was to estimate the results of preoperatively performed high frequencies echosonography in order to reduce the number of incorrectly performed surgical excisions of skin tumors. The group was composed of 40 patients with 45 tumors, who first underwent echosonographic diagnostic procedure (20 MHz, Hadsund electronic, Hadsund Technology, Denmark) and then surgical excision; patients in control group (45 patients with 45 tumors) were only subjected to surgical excision. Excised tumors were then pathohistologically analyzed, and measurements of tumor depth progression were performed. Margins of pathohistological specimen were controlled for the presence of tumor cells. Results of measurements of tumor depth obtained by echosonography and pathohistological measurements were compared. By Jate's modification of c2 test results regarding correct and incorrect surgical excision in patients and control group were compared. By linear regression analysis results of tumor depth obtained by echosonographic and pathohistologic examinations were compared. Hypoechogen zone echosonographic results were used like criteria for tumor expansion. Results of tumor depth measurements are presented in Table 1. Linear regression analysis showed (R = 0.64) that echosonographic examination gave objective pictures of tumor depth. Six specimens were excluded from this examination, and only the presence of tumor cells on specimen margins were analyzed. All tumors in patients were excised radically; in control group tumor cells were present on pathohistological specimens margins of six cases. In comparison p = 0.5016 was a not significant value. Success of 100% of specimens correctly excised in operated patients is the success which is very close to success of Moh's micrographie surgery (by Fleming only 1% of tumor relapse in a five-year follow-up period) [8]. Result of 13.33% of incorrect excision in control group is close to results obtained by Leshin and al [9]. Result of p = 0.05016 is not statistically significant, but is very close to statistically significant values. This might require future examinations in a larger group of patients. Results of R = 0.64 correlate with results obtained by Hoffmann [3], because they show that high-frequencies ultrasound examination gives an objective picture of skin tumors depth. Results of this examination show that preoperative high frequencies ultrasound examination can determine the progression of tumor depth, and give to surgeon data which can help him to perform correct surgical excisions.
