We apply four different mass modelling methods to a suite of publicly available mock data for spherical stellar systems. We focus on the recovery of the density and velocity anisotropy as a function of radius, using either line-of-sight velocity data only, or adding proper motion data. All methods perform well on isotropic and tangentially anisotropic mock data, recovering the density and velocity anisotropy within their 95% confidence intervals over the radial range 0.25 < R/Rhalf < 4, where Rhalf is the half light radius. However, radially-anisotropic mocks are more challenging. For line-of-sight data alone, only methods that use information about the shape of the velocity distribution function are able to break the degeneracy between the density profile and the velocity anisotropy to obtain an unbiased estimate of both. This shape information can be obtained through directly fitting a global phase space distribution function, by using higher order 'Virial Shape Parameters', or by assuming a Gaussian velocity distribution function locally, but projecting it self-consistently along the line of sight. Including proper motion data yields further improvements, and in this case, all methods give a good recovery of both the radial density and velocity anisotropy profiles., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures. We confirm the reality of the recently discovered Milky Way stellar cluster $\textit{Gaia}$ 1 using spectra acquired with the HERMES and AAOmega spectrographs of the Anglo-Australian Telescope. This cluster had been previously undiscovered due to its close angular proximity to Sirius, the brightest star in the sky at visual wavelengths. Our observations identified 41 cluster members, and yielded an overall metallicity of [Fe/H]$=-0.13\pm0.13$ and barycentric radial velocity of $v_r=58.30\pm0.22$ km/s. These kinematics provide a dynamical mass estimate of $12.9^{+4.6}_{-3.9}\times10^3$ M$_{\odot}$. Isochrone fits to $\textit{Gaia}$, 2MASS, and Pan-STARRS1 photometry indicate that $\textit{Gaia}$ 1 is an intermediate age ($\sim3$ Gyr) stellar cluster. Combining the spatial and kinematic data we calculate $\textit{Gaia}$ 1 has a circular orbit with a radius of about 12~kpc, but with a large out of plane motion: $z_\textrm{max}=1.1^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ kpc. Clusters with such orbits are unlikely to survive long due to the number of plane passages they would experience., Comment: 9 pages (and 3 pages of appendices), 8 figures. Accepted to MNRAS

Wrapping around the Milky Way, the Sagittarius stream is the dominant substructure in the halo. Our statistical selection method has allowed us to identify 106 highly likely members of the Sagittarius stream. Spectroscopic analysis of metallicity and kinematics of all members provides us with a new mapping of the Sagittarius stream. We find correspondence between the velocity distribution of stream stars and those computed for a triaxial model of the Milky Way dark matter halo. The Sagittarius trailing arm exhibits a metallicity gradient, ranging from $-0.59$ dex to $-0.97$ dex over 142$^{\circ}$. This is consistent with the scenario of tidal disruption from a progenitor dwarf galaxy that possessed an internal metallicity gradient. We note high metallicity dispersion in the leading arm, causing a lack of detectable gradient and possibly indicating orbital phase mixing. We additionally report on a potential detection of the Sextans dwarf spheroidal in our data.

We present a detailed kinematic analysis of the outer halo globular cluster (GC) system of M31. Our basis for this is a set of new spectroscopic observations for 78 clusters lying at projected distances between Rproj ~20-140 kpc from the M31 centre. These are largely drawn from the recent PAndAS globular cluster catalogue; 63 of our targets have no previous velocity data. Via a Bayesian maximum likelihood analysis we find that GCs with Rproj > 30 kpc exhibit coherent rotation around the minor optical axis of M31, in the same direction as more centrally- located GCs, but with a smaller amplitude of 86+/-17 km s-1. There is also evidence that the velocity dispersion of the outer halo GC system decreases as a function of projected distance from the M31 centre, and that this relation can be well described by a power law of index ~ -0.5. The velocity dispersion profile of the outer halo GCs is quite similar to that of the halo stars, at least out to the radius up to which there is available information on the stellar kinematics. We detect and discuss various velocity correlations amongst subgroups of GCs that lie on stellar debris streams in the M31 halo. Many of these subgroups are dynamically cold, exhibiting internal velocity dispersions consistent with zero. Simple Monte Carlo experiments imply that such configurations are unlikely to form by chance, adding weight to the notion that a significant fraction of the outer halo GCs in M31 have been accreted alongside their parent dwarf galaxies. We also estimate the M31 mass within 200 kpc via the Tracer Mass Estimator, finding (1.2 - 1.6) +/- 0.2 10^{12}M_sun. This quantity is subject to additional systematic effects due to various limitations of the data, and assumptions built in into the TME. We present the first kinematic analysis of the far outer halo globular cluster (GC) population in the Local Group galaxy M31. Our sample contains 53 objects with projected radii of ~20-130 kpc, of which 44 have no previous spectroscopic information. GCs with projected radii >30 kpc are found to exhibit net rotation around the minor axis of M31, in the same sense as the inner GCs, albeit with a smaller amplitude of 79 +/-19 km/s. The rotation-corrected velocity dispersion of the full halo GC sample is 106 +/-12 km/s, which we observe to decrease with increasing projected radius. We find compelling evidence for kinematic-coherence amongst GCs which project on top of halo substructure, including a clear signature of infall for GCs lying along the North-West stream. Using the tracer mass estimator, we estimate the dynamical mass of M31 within 200 kpc to be M_M31 = (1.2-1.5) +/- 0.2 x 10^12 M_sun. Panchromatic observations of the best candidate HyLIRG from the widest Herschel extragalactic imaging survey have led to the discovery of at least four intrinsically luminous z=2.41 galaxies across a ~100-kpc region - a cluster of starbursting proto-ellipticals. Via sub-arcsecond interferometric imaging we have measured accurate gas and star-formation surface densities. The two brightest galaxies span ~3 kpc FWHM in submm/radio continuum and CO J=4-3, and double that in CO J=1-0. The broad CO line is due partly to the multitude of constituent galaxies and partly to large rotational velocities in two counter-rotating gas disks -- a scenario predicted to lead to the most intense starbursts, which will therefore come in pairs. The disks have M(dyn) of several x 10^11 Msun, and gas fractions of ~40%. Velocity dispersions are modest so the disks are unstable, potentially on scales commensurate with their radii: these galaxies are undergoing extreme bursts of star formation, not confined to their nuclei, at close to the Eddington limit. Their specific star-formation rates place them ~>5x above the main sequence, which supposedly comprises large gas disks like these. Their high star-formation efficiencies are difficult to reconcile with a simple volumetric star-formation law. N-body and dark matter simulations suggest this system is the progenitor of a B(inary)-type ~10^14.6-Msun cluster., Comment: 15 pages, 8 colour figures; accepted for publication in ApJ

Using a variety of stellar tracers -- blue horizontal branch stars, main-sequence turn-off stars and red giants -- we follow the path of the Sagittarius (Sgr) stream across the sky in Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. Our study presents new Sgr debris detections, accurate distances and line-of-sight velocities that together help to shed new light on the puzzle of the Sgr tails. For both the leading and the trailing tail, we trace the points of their maximal extent, or apo-centric distances, and find that they lie at $R^L$ = 47.8 $\pm$ 0.5 kpc and $R^T$ = 102.5 $\pm$ 2.5 kpc respectively. The angular difference between the apo-centres is 93.2 $\pm$ 3.5 deg, which is smaller than predicted for logarithmic haloes. Such differential orbital precession can be made consistent with models of the Milky Way in which the dark matter density falls more quickly with radius. However, currently, no existing Sgr disruption simulation can explain the entirety of the observational data. Based on its position and radial velocity, we show that the unusually large globular cluster NGC 2419 can be associated with the Sgr trailing stream. We measure the precession of the orbital plane of the Sgr debris in the Milky Way potential and show that, surprisingly, Sgr debris in the primary (brighter) tails evolves differently to the secondary (fainter) tails, both in the North and the South., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures. We present the results of a spectroscopic survey performed in the outskirts of the globular cluster NGC1851 with VIMOS@VLT. The radial velocities of 107 stars in a region between 12' and 33' around the cluster have been derived. We clearly identify the cluster stellar population over the entire field of view, indicating the presence of a significant fraction of stars outside the tidal radius predicted by King models. We also find tentative evidence of a cold (sigma_v< 20 km/s) peak in the distribution of velocities at v_r~180 km/s constituted mainly by Main Sequence stars whose location in the color-magnitude diagram is compatible with a stream at a similar distance of this cluster. We present results from a spectroscopic survey of the dwarf spheroidal And XXII and the two extended clusters EC1 and EC2. These three objects are candidate satellites of the Triangulum galaxy, M33, which itself is likely a satellite of M31. We use the DEep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph mounted on the Keck-II telescope to derive radial velocities for candidate member stars of these objects and thereby identify the stars that are most likely actual members. Eleven most probable stellar members (of 13 candidates) are found for AndXXII. We obtain an upper limit of sigma_v < 6.0 km s-1 for the velocity dispersion of AndXXII, [Fe/H] ~ -1.6 for its metallicity, and 255pc for the Plummer radius of its projected density profile. We construct a colour magnitude diagram for AndXXII and identify both the red giant branch and the horizontal branch. The position of the latter is used to derive a heliocentric distance to And XXII of 853 pm 26 kpc. The combination of the radial velocity, distance, and angular position of AndXXII indicates that it is a strong candidate for being the first known satellite of M33 and one of the very few examples of a galactic satellite of a satellite. N-body simulations imply that this conclusion is unchanged even if M31 and M33 had a strong encounter in the past few Gyr. We test the hypothesis that the extended clusters highlight tidally stripped galaxies by searching for an excess cloud of halo-like stars in their vicinity. We find such a cloud for the case of EC1 but not EC2. We build a sample of distant (D > 80 kpc) stellar halo stars with measured radial velocities. Faint ($20 < g <22$) candidate blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars were selected using the deep, but wide, multi-epoch Sloan Digital Sky Survey photometry. Follow-up spectroscopy for these A-type stars was performed using the VLT-FORS2 instrument. We classify stars according to their Balmer line profiles, and find 7 are bona fide BHB stars and 31 are blue stragglers (BS). Owing to the magnitude range of our sample, even the intrinsically fainter BS stars can reach out to D ~ 90 kpc. We complement this sample of A-type stars with intrinsically brighter, intermediate-age, asymptotic giant branch stars. A set of 4 distant cool carbon stars is compiled from the literature and we perform spectroscopic follow-up on a further 4 N-type carbon stars using the WHT-ISIS instrument. Altogether, this provides us with the largest sample to date of individual star tracers out to r ~ 150 kpc. We find that the radial velocity dispersion of these tracers falls rapidly at large distances and is surprisingly cold (sigma_r ~ 50-60 km/s) between 100-150 kpc. Relating the measured radial velocities to the mass of the Milky Way requires knowledge of the (unknown) tracer density profile and anisotropy at these distances. Nonetheless, by assuming the stellar halo stars between 50-150 kpc have a moderate density fall-off (with power-law slope alpha < 5) and are on radial orbits (sigma^2_t/sigma^2_r < 1), we infer that the mass within 150 kpc is less than 10^12 M_solar and suggest it probably lies in the range (5-10) x 10^11 M_solar. The structure of the Sagittarius stream in the Southern Galactic hemisphere is analysed with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 8. Parallel to the Sagittarius tidal track, but ~ 10deg away, there is another fainter and more metal-poor stream. We provide evidence that the two streams follow similar distance gradients but have distinct morphological properties and stellar populations. The brighter stream is broader, contains more metal-rich stars and has a richer colour-magnitude diagram with multiple turn-offs and a prominent red clump as compared to the fainter stream. Based on the structural properties and the stellar population mix, the stream configuration is similar to the Northern "bifurcation". In the region of the South Galactic Cap, there is overlapping tidal debris from the Cetus Stream, which crosses the Sagittarius stream. Using both photometric and spectroscopic data, we show that the blue straggler population belongs mainly to Sagittarius and the blue horizontal branch stars belong mainly to the Cetus stream in this confused location in the halo., Comment: accepted to ApJ with minor changes (3 tables added). We develop, implement and characterise an enhanced data reduction approach which delivers precise, accurate, radial velocities from moderate resolution spectroscopy with the fibre-fed VLT/FLAMES+GIRAFFE facility. This facility, with appropriate care, delivers radial velocities adequate to resolve the intrinsic velocity dispersions of the very faint dSph dwarf galaxies. Importantly, repeated measurements let us reliably calibrate our individual velocity errors ($0.2 \leq \delta_V\leq 5$ km s$^{-1}$) and directly detect stars with variable radial velocities. We show, by application to the Bootes-1 dwarf spheroidal, that the intrinsic velocity dispersion of this system is significantly below 6.5\,km/s reported by previous studies. Our data favor a two-population model of Bootes-1, consisting of a majority `cold' stellar component, with velocity dispersion $2.4^{+0.9}_{-0.5}$\,km/s, and a minority `hot' stellar component, with velocity dispersion $\sim 9$\,km/s, although we can not completely rule out a single component distribution with velocity dispersion $4.6^{0.8}_{-0.6}$\,km/s. We speculate this complex velocity distribution actually reflects the distribution of velocity anisotropy in Bootes-1, which is a measure of its formation processes., Comment: ApJ in press. Dwarf galaxies are widely believed to be among the best targets for indirect dark matter searches using high-energy gamma rays; and indeed gamma-ray emission from these objects has long been a subject of detailed study for ground-based atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Here, we update current exclusion limits obtained on the closest dwarf, the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, in light of recent realistic dark matter halo models. The constraints on the velocity-weighted annihilation cross section of the dark matter particle are of a few 10$^{-23}$ cm$^{3}$s$^{-1}$ in the TeV energy range for a 50 h exposure. The limits are extrapolated to the sensitivities of future Cherenkov Telescope Arrays. For 200 h of observation time, the sensitivity at 95% C.L. reaches 10$^{-25}$ cm$^{3}$s$^{-1}$. Possible astrophysical backgrounds from gamma-ray sources dissembled in Sagittarius dwarf are studied. It is shown that with long-enough observation times, gamma-ray background from millisecond pulsars in a globular cluster contained within Sagittarius dwarf may limit the sensitivity to dark matter annihilations., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

While the satellites of the Milky Way (MW) have been shown to be largely consistent in terms of their mass contained within one half--light radius (M_{half}) with a "Universal" mass profile, a number of M31 satellites are found to be inconsistent with such relations, and seem kinematically colder in their central regions than their MW cousins. In this work, we present new kinematic and updated structural properties for two M31 dSphs, And V and And VI using data from the Keck Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph (LRIS) and the DEep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph (DEIMOS) instruments and the Subaru Suprime-Cam imager. We measure systemic velocities of v_r=-393.1+/-4.2km/s and -344.8+/-2.5km/s, and dispersions of sigma_v=11.5{+5.3}{-4.4}km/s and sigma_v=9.4{+3.2}{-2.4}km/s for And V and And VI respectively, meaning these two objects are consistent with the trends in sigma_v and r_{half} set by their MW counterparts. We also investigate the nature of this scatter about the MW dSph mass profiles for the "Classical" (i.e. M_V<-8) MW and M31 dSphs. When comparing both the "classical" MW and M31 dSphs to the best--fit mass profiles in the size--velocity dispersion plane, we find general scatter in both the positive (i.e. hotter) and negative (i.e. colder) directions from these profiles. However, barring one exception (CVnI) only the M31 dSphs are found to scatter towards a colder regime, and, excepting the And I dSph, only MW objects scatter to hotter dispersions. We also note that the scatter for the combined population is greater than expected from measurement errors alone. We assess this divide in the context of the differing disc-to-halo mass (i.e. stars and baryons to total virial mass) ratios of the two hosts and argue that the underlying mass profiles for dSphs differ from galaxy to galaxy, and are modified by the baryonic component of the host., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures. We present the results of deep imaging obtained at the CFHT with MegaCam in the Anticenter direction at two different heights above the Galactic disk. We detect the presence of the Monoceros ring in both fields as a conspicuous and narrow Main Sequence feature which dominates star counts over a large portion of the color-magnitude diagram down to g'~24. The comparison of the morphology and density of this feature with a large variety of Galactic models excludes the possibility that it can be due to a flare of the Galactic disk, supporting an extra-Galactic origin for this ring-like structure., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication by ApJL

We report the detection of a pair of degree-long tidal tails associated with the globular cluster Palomar 14, using images obtained at the CFHT. We reveal a power-law departure from a King profile at large distances to the cluster center. The density map constructed with the optimal matched filter technique shows a nearly symmetrical and elongated distribution of stars on both sides of the cluster, forming a S-shape characteristic of mass loss. This evidence may be the telltale signature of tidal stripping in action. This, together with its large Galactocentric distance, imposes strong constraints on its orbit and/or origin: i) it must follow an external orbit confined to the peripheral region of the Galactic halo and/or ii) it formed in a satellite galaxy later accreted by the Milky Way., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication by ApJ

What is the mass of the progenitor of the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf galaxy? Here, we reassemble the stellar debris using SDSS and 2MASS data to find the total luminosity and likely mass. We find that the luminosity is in the range 9.6-13.2 x10^7 solar luminosities or M_V ~ -15.1 - 15.5, with 70% of the light residing in the debris streams. The progenitor is somewhat fainter than the present-day Small Magellanic Cloud, and comparable in brightness to the M31 dwarf spheroidals NGC 147 and NGC 185. Using cosmologically motivated models, we estimate that the mass of Sgr's dark matter halo prior to tidal disruption was ~10^10 solar masses., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables, submitted to ApJ

We present the first spectroscopic analysis of the faint M31 satellite galaxies, AndXI and AndXIII, and a reanalysis of existing spectroscopic data for two further faint companions, And IX and AndXII. By combining data obtained using the DEIMOS spectrograph mounted on the Keck II telescope with deep photometry from the Suprime-Cam instrument on Subaru, we have calculated global properties for the dwarfs, such as systemic velocities, metallicites and half-light radii.We find each dwarf to be very metal poor ([Fe/H] -2 both photometrically and spectroscopically, from their stacked spectrum), and as such, they continue to follow the luminosity-metallicity relationship established with brighter dwarfs. We are unable to resolve a dispersion for And XI due to small sample size and low S/N, but we set a one sigma upper limit of sigma-v <5 km/s. For And IX, And XII and And XIII we resolve velocity dispersions of v=4.5 (+3.4,-3.2), 2.6(+5.1,-2.6) and 9.7(+8.9,-4.5) km/s, and derive masses within the half light radii of 6.2(+5.3,-5.1)x10^6 Msun, 2.4 (+6.5,-2.4)x10^6 Msun and 1.1(+1.4,-0.7)x10^7 Msun respectively. We discuss each satellite in the context of the Mateo relations for dwarf spheroidal galaxies, and the Universal halo profiles established for Milky Way dwarfs (Walker et al. 2009). For both galaxies, this sees them fall below the Universal halo profiles of Walker et al. (2009). When combined with the findings of McConnachie & Irwin (2006a), which reveal that the M31 satellites are twice as extended (in terms of both half-light and tidal radii) as their Milky Way counterparts, these results suggest that the satellite population of the Andromeda system could inhabit halos that are significantly different from those of the Milky Way in terms of their central densities (abridged)., Comment: 26 pages, 18 figures, MNRAS submitted

(abridged) We present a spectroscopic analysis of five stellar streams (`A', `B', `Cr', `Cp' and `D') as well as the extended star cluster, EC4, which lies within streamC, all discovered in the halo of M31 from our CFHT/MegaCam survey. These spectroscopic results were initially serendipitous, making use of our existing observations from the DEep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph mounted on the Keck II telescope, and thereby emphasizing the ubiquity of tidal streams that account for ~70% of the M31 halo stars in the targeted fields. Subsequent spectroscopy was then procured in streamCr/p and streamD to trace the velocity gradient along the streams. For the cluster EC4, candidate member stars with average [Fe/H]~-1.4 (Fe/H_spec=-1.6), are found at v_{hel}=-285 km/s suggesting it could be related to streamCp. No similarly obvious cold kinematic candidate is found for streamD, although candidates are proposed in both of two spectroscopic pointings along the stream (both at -400 km/s). Spectroscopy near the edge of streamB suggests a likely kinematic detection, while a candidate kinematic detection of streamA is found (plausibly associated to M33 rather than M31). The low dispersion of the streams in kinematics, physical thickness, and metallicity makes it hard to reconcile with a scenario whereby these stream structures as an ensemble are related to the giant southern stream. We present the second data release of the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE), an ambitious spectroscopic survey to measure radial velocities (RVs) and stellar atmosphere parameters of up to one million stars using the 6dF multi-object spectrograph on the 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope of the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO). It is obtaining medium resolution spectra (median R=7,500) in the Ca-triplet region (8,410--8,795 \AA) for southern hemisphere stars in the magnitude range 9

We have searched for in-falling stellar streams on to the local Milky Way disc in the CORAVEL and RAVE surveys. The CORAVEL survey consists of local dwarf stars (Nordstrom et al. Geneva-Copenhagen survey) and local Famaey et al. giant stars. We select RAVE stars with radial velocities that are sensitive to the Galactic vertical space velocity (Galactic latitude b < -45 deg). Kuiper statistics have been employed to test the symmetry of the Galactic vertical velocity distribution functions in these samples for evidence of a net vertical flow that could be associated with a (tidal?) stream of stars with vertically coherent kinematics. In contrast to the `Field of Streams' found in the outer halo, we find that the local volumes of the solar neighbourhood sampled by the CORAVEL dwarfs (complete within ~3 x 10^-4 kpc^3), CORAVEL giants (complete within ~5 x 10^-2 kpc^3) and RAVE (5-15% complete within ~8 kpc^3) are devoid of any vertically coherent streams containing hundreds of stars. This is sufficiently sensitive to allow our RAVE sample to rule out the passing of the tidal stream of the disrupting Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf galaxy through the solar neighbourhood. This agrees with the most recent determination of its orbit and dissociates it from the Helmi et al. halo stream. Our constraints on the absence of the Sgr stream near the Sun could prove a useful tool for discriminating between Galactic potential models. The lack of a net vertical flow through the solar neighbourhood in the CORAVEL giants and RAVE samples argues against the Virgo overdensity crossing the disc near the Sun. There are no vertical streams in the CORAVEL giants and RAVE samples with stellar densities >1.6 x 10^4 and 1.5 x 10^3 stars kpc^-3 respectively and therefore no evidence for locally enhanced dark matter., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 25 pages, 22 figures, 9 tables

We present spectroscopic observations of the AndXII dwarf spheroidal galaxy using DEIMOS/Keck-II, showing it to be moving rapidly through the Local Group (-556 km/s heliocentric velocity, -281 km/s relative to Andromeda from the MW), falling into the Local Group from ~115 kpc beyond Andromeda's nucleus. AndXII therefore represents a dwarf galaxy plausibly falling into the Local Group for the first time, and never having experienced a dense galactic environment. From Green Bank Telescope observations, a limit on the H{I} gas mass of <3000 Msun suggests that AndXII's gas could have been removed prior to experiencing the tides of the Local Group galaxies. Orbit models suggest the dwarf is close to the escape velocity of M31 for published mass models. [Abridged] We present first results from a large-area (~80degx20deg), sparsely sampled two-filter (B,R) imaging survey towards the Canis Major stellar over-density, claimed to be a disrupting Milky Way satellite galaxy. Utilizing stellar colour-magnitude diagrams reaching to B ~ 22 mag, we provide a first delineation of its surface density distribution using main sequence stars. Its projected shape is highly elongated, nearly parallel to the Galactic plane, with an axis ratio of >~ 5:1, substantially more so than what Martin et al. originally found. We also provide a first map of a prominent over-density of blue, presumably younger main sequence stars, which appears to have a maximum near [l,b = 240,-7 deg]. The young population is markedly more localized. We estimate an upper limit on the line-of-sight (l.o.s.) depth of the old population based on the main sequence width, obtaining sigma_los < 1.8 +/- 0.3 kpc, at an adopted D_helio = 7.5 +/- 1 kpc. For the young stellar population, we find sigma_los < 1.5 kpc. There are different explanations for the CMa over-density: (a) a partially disrupting dwarf galaxy on a low-latitude orbit, (b) a projection of the warped outer Galactic disk, and (c) a projection of an out-of-plane spiral arm. While the data provide no firm arguments against the less well-defined third scenario, they have clear implications for each of the others: (a) We infer from the strong elongation in longitude, and simulations in the literature, that the over-density is unlikely to be a gravitationally bound system at the present epoch, but may well be just a recently disrupted satellite remnant. (b) Based on modeling, the line-of-sight depth of the over-density in old stars is clearly inconsistent with published locally axi-symmetric descriptions of the warped Galactic disk., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures, Submitted to AJ. We present the first data release of the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE), an ambitious spectroscopic survey to measure radial velocities and stellar atmosphere parameters (temperature, metallicity, surface gravity) of up to one million stars using the 6dF multi-object spectrograph on the 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope of the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO). The RAVE program started in 2003, obtaining medium resolution spectra (median R=7,500) in the Ca-triplet region ($\lambda\lambda$ 8,410--8,795 \AA) for southern hemisphere stars drawn from the Tycho-2 and SuperCOSMOS catalogs, in the magnitude range 9

A luminosity-temperature relation for clusters of galaxies is derived. The two models used, take into account the angular momentum acquisition by the proto-structures during their expansion and collapse. The first one is a modification of the self-similar model (SSM) while the second one is a modification of the Punctuated Equilibria Model (Cavaliere et al. 1999). In both models the mass-temperature relation (M-T) used is based on the calculations of Del Popolo (2002b). We show that the above models lead, in X-rays, to a luminosity-temperature relation that scales as L \propto T^5, at scale of groups, flattening to L \propto T^3 for rich clusters and converging to L \propto T^2 at higher temperatures. However a fundamental result of our paper is that the non-similarity in the L-T relation, can be explained by a simple model that takes into account the amount of the angular momentum of a proto-structure. This result is in disagreement with the widely accepted idea that the above non-similarity is due to non-gravitating processes as those of heating/cooling., Comment: prnted in ApJ

We present the first determination of the proper motion of the neutron star low mass X-ray binary {Cen X-4} measured from relative astrometry of the secondary star using optical images at different epochs. We determine the Galactic space velocity components of the system and find them to be significantly different from the mean values that characterize the kinematics of stars belonging to the halo, and the thin and the thick disc of the Galaxy. The high metallicity of the secondary star of the system rules out a halo origin and indicates that the system probably originated in the Galactic disc. A statistical analysis of the galactocentric motion revealed that this binary moves in a highly eccentric ($e\simeq 0.85\pm0.1$) orbit with an inclination of $\simeq 110^\circ$ to the Galactic plane. The large Galactic space velocity components strongly support that a high natal kick as a result of a supernova explosion could have propelled the system into such an orbit from a birth place in the Galactic disc. The high Li abundance in the secondary, comparable to that of stars in star forming regions and young stellar clusters like the Pleiades, may suggest a relatively recent formation of the system. Following the orbit backwards in time, we found that the system could have been in the inner regions of the Galactic disc $\sim$100--200 Myr ago. The neutron star might have formed at that moment. We develop a semi-analytical model that determines the evolution of the mass, position and internal structure of dark matter substructures orbiting in dark matter haloes. We apply this model to the case of the Milky Way. We focus in particular on the effects of mass loss, dynamical friction and substructure--substructure interactions, the last of which has previously been ignored in analytic models of substructure evolution. Our semi-analytical treatment reproduces both the spatial distribution of substructures and their mass function as obtained from the most recent N-body cosmological calculations of Gao et al. (2004). We find that, if mass loss is taken into account, the present distribution of substructures is practically insensitive to dynamical friction and scatterings from other substructures. Implementing these phenomena leads to a slight increase (~5%) in the number of substructures at r<0.35 r_vir, whereas their effects on the mass function are negligible. We find that mass loss processes lead to the disruption of substructures before dynamical friction and gravitational scattering can significantly alter their orbits. Our results suggest that the present substructure distribution at r>0.35 r_vir reflects the orbital properties at infall and is, therefore, purely determined by the dark matter environment around the host halo and has not been altered by dynamical evolution., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. 13 pages, 9 figures

We investigate the effect of a density gradient on Chandrasekhar's dynamical friction formula based on the method of 2-body encounters in the local approximation. We apply these generalizations to the orbit evolution of satellite galaxies in Dark Matter haloes. We find from the analysis that the main influence occurs through a position-dependent maximum impact parameter in the Coulomb logarithm, which is determined by the local scale-length of the density distribution. We also show that for eccentric orbits the explicit dependence of the Coulomb logarithm on position yields significant differences for the standard homogeneous force. Including the velocity dependence of the Coulomb logarithm yields ambigous results. The orbital fits in the first few periods are further improved, but the deviations at later times are much larger. The additional force induced by the density gradient, the inhomogeneous force, is not antiparallel to the satellite motion and can exceed 10% of the homogeneous friction force in magnitude. However, due to the symmetry properties of the inhomogeneous force, there is a deformation and no secular effect on the orbit at the first order. Therefore the inhomogeneous force can be safely neglected for the orbital evolution of satellite galaxies. For the homogeneous force we compare numerical N-body calculations with semi-analytical orbits to determine quantitatively the accuracy of the generalized formulae of the Coulomb logarithm in the Chandresekhar approach. With the local scale-length as the maximum impact parameter we find a significant improvement of the orbital fits and a better interpretation of the quantitative value of the Coulomb logarithm., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication by Astronomy and Astrophysics 19.10.2004

We have compiled an extensive dataset on potential parts of the Monoceros tidal stream and performed an exhaustive survey of dwarf galaxy semi-analytic orbits in order to constrain its orbital properties. The best-fit orbits are subsequently realized as self-consistent N-body simulations in order to reproduce the spatial and velocity distribution of satellite debris. We find that all kinematic and geometric constraints can be fit by a single stream allowing for multiple wraps. The orbital eccentricity and inclination of the progenitor are strongly constrained to be e = 0.10 \pm 0.05 and i = 25 \pm 5 deg. Ten new estimates of proper motions from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) clearly exclude all retrograde orbits. Particles lost by the satellite populate two, nearly concentric rings naturally explaining the detection of stream stars at both 6--8 kpc (Ibata et al. 2003, Newberg et al. 2003) and 12--18 kpc (the Tri/And stream; Rocha-Pinto et al. 2003) from the Sun. We have attempted to predict the present location of the Monoceros stream progenitor using different information: (i) the kinematical and spatial distribution of detections and (ii) the different mean metallicity in the innner and the outer rings. A current location at l ~ 245, b ~ -18., with a distance to the Sun r_s~15 kpc, reproduces the available constraints. The mass of the progenitor has been poorly determined due to the slow orbital decay. Similar fits have been obtained for masses (3-9)10^8 M_sun.
