Abstract

Clouds are prevalent in many of the exoplanet atmospheres that have been observed to date. For transiting exoplanets, we know if clouds are present because they mute spectral features and cause wavelength-dependent scattering. While the exact composition of these clouds is largely unknown, this information is vital to understanding the chemistry and energy budget of planetary atmospheres. In this work, we observe one transit of the hot Jupiter WASP-17b with JWST's MIRI LRS and generate a transmission spectrum from 5-12 $\rm{\mu}$m. These wavelengths allow us to probe absorption due to the vibrational modes of various predicted cloud species. Our transmission spectrum shows additional opacity centered at 8.6 $\rm{\mu}$m, and detailed atmospheric modeling and retrievals identify this feature as SiO$_2$(s) (quartz) clouds. The SiO$_2$(s) clouds model is preferred at 3.5-4.2$\sigma$ versus a cloud-free model and at 2.6$\sigma$ versus a generic aerosol prescription. We find the SiO$_2$(s) clouds are comprised of small ${\sim}0.01$ $\rm{\mu}$m particles, which extend to high altitudes in the atmosphere. The atmosphere also shows a depletion of H$_2$O, a finding consistent with the formation of high-temperature aerosols from oxygen-rich species. Abstract

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. Abstract

We report on JWST commissioning observations of the transiting exoplanet HAT-P-14 b, obtained using the Bright Object Time Series (BOTS) mode of the NIRSpec instrument with the G395H/F290LP grating/filter combination ($3-5\mu$m). While the data were used primarily to verify that the NIRSpec BOTS mode is working as expected, and to enable it for general scientific use, they yield a precise transmission spectrum which we find is featureless down to the precision level of the instrument, consistent with expectations given HAT-P-14~b's small scale-height and hence expected atmospheric features. The exquisite quality and stability of the \emph{JWST/NIRSpec} transit spectrum -- almost devoid of any systematic effects -- allowed us to obtain median uncertainties of 50-60 ppm in this wavelength range at a resolution of $R=100$ in a single exposure, which is in excellent agreement with pre-flight expectations and close to the (or at the) photon-noise limit for a $J = 9.094$, F-type star like HAT-P-14. These observations showcase the ability of NIRSpec/BOTS to perform cutting-edge transiting exoplanet atmospheric science, setting the stage for observations and discoveries to be made in Cycle 1 and beyond., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures; part of the PASP Focus Issue "JWST Time-Series Observations: Commissioning Performance". Abstract

This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. Abstract

The cosmological origin of carbon, the fourth most abundant element in the Universe, is not well known and matter of heavy debate. We investigate the behavior of C/O to O/H in order to constrain the production mechanism of carbon. We measured emission-line intensities in a spectral range from 1600 to 10000 \AA\ on Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) long-slit spectra of 18 starburst galaxies in the local Universe. We determined chemical abundances through traditional nebular analysis and we used a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to determine where our carbon and oxygen abundances lie in the parameter space. We conclude that our C and O abundance measurements are sensible. We analyzed the behavior of our sample in the [C/O] vs. [O/H] diagram with respect to other objects such as DLAs, neutral ISM measurements, and disk and halo stars, finding that each type of object seems to be located in a specific region of the diagram. Our sample shows a steeper C/O vs. O/H slope with respect to other samples, suggesting that massive stars contribute more to the production of C than N at higher metallicities, only for objects where massive stars are numerous; otherwise intermediate-mass stars dominate the C and N production., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We measure C III] 1907,1909 A emission lines in eleven gravitationally--lensed star-forming galaxies at z~1.6--3, finding much lower equivalent widths than previously reported for fainter lensed galaxies (Stark et al. 2014). While it is not yet clear what causes some galaxies to be strong C III] emitters, CIII] emission is not a universal property of distant star-forming galaxies. We also examine C III] emission in 46 star-forming galaxies in the local universe, using archival spectra from GHRS, FOS, and STIS on HST, and IUE. Twenty percent of these local galaxies show strong C III] emission, with equivalent widths <-5 A. Three nearby galaxies show C III] emission equivalent widths as large as the most extreme emitters yet observed in the distant universe; all three are Wolf-Rayet galaxies. At all redshifts, strong C III] emission may pick out low-metallicity galaxies experiencing intense bursts of star formation. 7. HI Lyman-alpha equivalent widths of stellar populations

Abstract

We have compiled a library of stellar Lyman-alpha equivalent widths in O and B stars using the model atmosphere codes CMFGEN and TLUSTY, respectively. The equivalent widths range from about 0 to 30 \AA in absorption for early-O to mid-B stars. The purpose of this library is the prediction of the underlying stellar Lyman-alpha absorption in stellar populations of star-forming galaxies with nebular Lyman-alpha emission. We implemented the grid of individual equivalent widths into the Starburst99 population synthesis code to generate synthetic Lyman-alpha equivalent widths for representative star-formation histories. A starburst observed after 10 Myr will produce a stellar Lyman-alpha line with an equivalent width of $\sim$ -10$\pm$4 \AA in absorption for a Salpeter initial mass function. The lower value (deeper absorption) results for an instantaneous burst, and the higher value (shallower line) for continuous star formation. Depending on the escape fraction of nebular Lyman-alpha photons, the effect of stellar Lyman-alpha on the total profile ranges from negligible to dominant. If the nebular escape fraction is 10%, the stellar absorption and nebular emission equivalent widths become comparable for continuous star formation at ages of 10 to 20 Myr., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

We describe observations in the nearby universe (<100 Mpc) with a 10-m or larger space-based telescope having imaging and spectral capabilities in the range 912-9000 \AA that would enable advances in the fields of massive stars, young populations, and star-forming galaxies, that are essential for achieving the Cosmic Origins Program objectives i) how are the chemical elements distributed in galaxies and dispersed in the circumgalactic and intergalactic medium; and ii) when did the first stars in the universe form, and how did they influence their environments. Abstract

An analysis of the OIII and SIII temperatures measurements compiled by Perez-Montero et al. of emission line objects consisting of HII galaxies, giant extragalactic HII regions, Galactic HII regions and HII regions from the Magellanic Clouds, reveals that the OIII temperatures are higher than the corresponding values from SIII in most objects with gas metallicities in excess of 0.2 solar. We explore the possibility of temperature inhomogeneities. We also explored metallicity inhomogeneities by combining two models of widely different metallicity. We calculate models that consider a non-Mawell-Boltzmann distributions for the electron energies (kappa parametrization). We also consider shock heating within the photoionized nebula. Varying the various input parameters in the pure photoionization case does not reproduce the observed nebular temperatures and neither does having local temperature inhomogeneities. We find that (1) metallicity inhomogeneities of the nebular gas, (2) shock waves of velocities < 60 km/s propagating in a photoionized plasma, and (3) an electron energy distribution given by a kappa-distribution, are successful in reproducing the observed excess in the [OIII] temperatures. Shock models, however, would require proper 3D hydrodynamical simulations to become a fully developed alternative while models with metallicity inhomogeneities appear to fail in metal poor nebulae, since they result in T_O++(rec)> T_OIII., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, 1 table, accepted (10 sept. 2012) for publication in A&A

Abstract

We present long slit spectrophotometry of two HII regions: TOL2146-391 and TOL0357-3915. We performed a detailed analysis that involves abundance determinations relaxing the assumption of homogeneous temperature. The temperature inhomogeneities values, t^2, were obtained through two methods: (i) comparing abundances from oxygen recombination lines to abundances from collisionally excited lines and (ii) by using the line intensity ratios of a set of HeI lines together with the HELIO10 program. We find that the HELIO10 program is a good alternative to obtain a t^2 value in photoionized regions where recombination lines of heavy elements are not available. We have plotted 27 high and low metallicity HII regions in an oxygen degree of ionization versus t^2 diagram; we find areas populated by HII regions and areas void of them; the physical characteristics of each area are discussed. In addition, an average t^2 value can be determined for the objects in each area. 11. Recalibration of Pagel's method for HII regions considering the thermal structure, the ionization structure, and the depletion of O into dust grains

Abstract

Using a sample of 28 HII regions from the literature with measured temperature inhomogeneity parameter, t^2, we present a statistical correction to the chemical abundances determined with the Te(4363/5007) method. We used the t^2 values to correct the oxygen gaseous abundances and consider the oxygen depletion into dust to calculate the total abundances for these objects. This correction is used to obtain a new calibration of Pagel's strong-line method, R_{23}, to determine oxygen abundances in HII regions. Our new calibration simultaneously considers the temperature structure, the ionization structure, and the fraction of oxygen depleted into dust grains. Previous calibrations in the literature have included one or two of these factors; this is the first time all three are taken into account. This recalibration conciliates the systematic differences among the temperatures found from different methods. We find that the total correction due to thermal inhomogeneities and dust depletion amounts to an increase in the O/H ratio of HII regions by factors of 1.7 to 2.2 (or 0.22 to 0.35 dex). 12. Analysis of two SMC HII Regions Considering Thermal Inhomogeneities: Implications for the Determinations of Extragalactic Chemical Abundances

Abstract

We present long slit spectrophotometry considering the presence of thermal inhomogeneities (t^2) of two HII regions in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC): NGC 456 and NGC 460. Physical conditions and chemical abundances were determined for three positions in NGC 456 and one position in NGC 460, first under the assumption of uniform temperature and then allowing for the possibility of thermal inhomogeneities. We determined t^2 values based on three different methods: i) by comparing the temperature derived using oxygen forbidden lines with the temperature derived using helium recombination lines, ii) by comparing the abundances derived from oxygen forbidden lines with those derived from oxygen recombination lines, and iii) by comparing the abundances derived from ultraviolet carbon forbidden lines with those derived from optical carbon recombination lines. The first two methods averaged t^2=0.067+-0.013 for NGC 456 and t^2=0.036+-0.027 for NGC 460. These values of t^2 imply that when gaseous abundances are determined with collisionally excited lines they are underestimated by a factor of nearly 2. From these objects and others in the literature, we find that in order to account for thermal inhomogeneities and dust depletion, the O/H ratio in low metallicity HII regions should be corrected by 0.25-0.45 dex depending on the thermal structure of the nebula, or by 0.35 dex if such information is not available., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. 41 pages in pre-print format. 3 figures

Abstract

Sir Francis Bacon is credited with the famous phrase: "Some books are tried, others eaten, very few chewed and digested." Put it in your web browser and you will see that it refers you to at least ten thousand pages. The phrase is so resounding, so visual and so powerful that it has been used as a slogan or claim for book fairs, bookstores, publishers and marketers of all kinds. There are countless times that it has rolled through social networks, adding to that endless collection of evocative sayings and quotes that seek to move and have someone be moved. There is not even complete assurance that Bacon actually pronounced the phrase at some point, and it certainly does not seem that he left it in writing. However, I have to admit that I like it, probably because it establishes a fairly direct connection with the act of eating and, in turn, with the feeling of hunger and, at the same time, with the different ways we have to satiate it. I recognize myself in it, in short, because I too, throughout my reading life, have tried books, I have compulsively devoured them or I have savored and enjoyed them as if they were the last delicacy that I had to eat., Se atribuye a Sir Francis Bacon la célebre frase que dice: “Algunos libros son probados, otros devorados, poquísimos masticados y digeridos”. Pónganla en su buscador de webs y verán que les remite, al menos, a una decena de miles de páginas. La frase es tan rotunda, tan visual y tan potente que la han usado como eslogan o reclamo para ferias del libro, librerías, editoriales y comercializadoras de todo tipo. Son innumerables las veces que ha rodado por las redes sociales, engrosando esa interminable colección de dichos y citas evocadoras que buscan mover y conmover. Ni siquiera hay seguridad plena de que, realmente, Bacon la pronunciara en algún momento y no parece, desde luego, que la dejara por escrito. Sin embargo, he de admitir que a mí me gusta y seguramente sea porque establece una conexión bastante directa con el hecho de comer y, a su vez, con la sensación de hambre y, al mismo tiempo, con las distintas formas que tenemos de saciarla. Me reconozco en ella, en definitiva, porque también yo, a lo largo de mi vida lectora, he probado libros, los he devorado compulsivamente o los he saboreado y disfrutado como si fueran el último manjar que me fuera dado ingerir.

International audience; A consecuencia de las legitimaciones propias realizadas por las élites o grupos de poder en América Latina tras las revoluciones de Independencia, se produjeron transformaciones en todos los países del continente. Dichos cambios, basándose en los ideales liberales y asentados en los valores tradicionales de la sociedad del nuevo mundo, favorecieron que las antiguas élites acumularan la casi totalidad de la riqueza de los nuevos Estados que se conformaron; y, en otros casos, facilitaron el nacimiento de nuevas fortunas y linajes. Este acaparamiento de capitales y patrimonio ayudó a que miembros destacados de la alta sociedad latinoamericana obtuvieran con suma facilidad las bancadas de los nuevos parlamentos. Por medio de la acumulación de capitales y de sus actividades económicas, sus carreras políticas tenían asegurada una nueva fuente de ingresos y, aunque los grandes cambios quedaban a veces lejos de su alcance, no dejaban de influir en el devenir diario del país. Analizar y trabajar sobre los vínculos entre estos dos espectros de ámbito local nos dará una perspectiva generalista del entramado estudiado. El objetivo de esta compilación es comprobar si las estrategias y el funcionamiento de las estructuras estudiadas desde lo micro y local de cada contribución tienen las mismas características y aplicación en el continente americano. Asimismo, analizar las relaciones entre las formaciones de redes económicas y redes políticas nos permitirá ver los vínculos que se establecieron en la conformación de los nuevos Estados o en la consolidación de los nuevos sistemas que durante todo el siglo xix se suceden en tierras americanas y continúan durante el xx. El interés y la importancia de este dossier, desde una perspectiva histórica, radica en mostrar uno de los temas más controvertidos de la actualidad: la unidad de las fuerzas sociales, políticas y económicas en manos del poder empresarial. No podemos olvidar que el origen de la fuerza de este entramado reside en muchas de las prácticas que empezaron a asentarse en el interior de las fronteras latinoamericanas hace más de un siglo. Determinar la naturaleza de las relaciones entre los grupos de poder económico y político es vital para comprender las dinámicas y las transformaciones producidas bajo el sistema económico que las desarrolla y en las que nos basaremos en esta compilación científica. Todo ello será abordado por los autores y autoras participantes en el dossier a lo largo de las páginas que siguen, tomando como referente diversos países de la geografía latinoamericana desde la Independencia hasta mediados del siglo xx, y dándonos una perspectiva de lo vivido en el matrimonio «poder político» y «poder económico» con casos que analizan diversos campos y actividades económicas y la influencia o el papel desempeñado por el Estado y/o los grupos de influencia. La contribución de Elisa Grandi contribuye al debate aquí planteado desde una perspectiva relacional. Se centra en la eficacia de los préstamos a escala internacional, nacional y local, para comprobar la instrumentalización que de los mismos se hizo por parte de los grupos privilegiados para la «modernización del país». Relevante es el papel desempeñado por los actores y las entidades locales en las negociaciones de estos préstamos, junto con las relaciones con los bancos estadounidenses, que crearon una primera red de actores locales e internacionales, que convirtieron el crédito internacional en un recurso de la política local y nacional colombiana. Juan Manuel Cerdá nos habla sobre el papel del Estado argentino en el fomento y sostenimiento del sector vitivinicultor por mediación de la unificación de impuestos internos y la creación de la Junta Reguladora de Vinos de 1934. Se observa en el trabajo la intromisión del Estado en materia económica, velando en la mayoría de los casos por los empresarios del sector. Los acuerdos políticos y estatales requerían de las oligarquías provinciales y, en especial, de las radicadas en las economías regionales para aplicar dichos gravámenes y, en cierta medida, beneficiaban los intereses «de los sectores involucrados», lo que confirmaba la relación entre poder económico y político en la Argentina

Abstract

A consecuencia de las legitimaciones propias realizadas por las élites o Independencia, se produjeron transformaciones en todos los países del continente. Dichos cambios, basándose en los ideales liberales y asentados en los valores tradicionales de la sociedad del nuevo mundo, favorecieron que las antiguas élites acumularan la casi totalidad de la riqueza de los nuevos Estados que se conformaron; y, en otros casos, facilitaron el nacimiento de nuevas fortunas y linajes. Este acaparamiento de capitales y patrimonio ayudó a que miembros destacados de la alta sociedad latinoamericana obtuvieran con suma facilidad las bancadas de los nuevos parlamentos. Por medio de la acumulación de capitales y de sus actividades económicas, sus carreras políticas tenían asegurada una nueva fuente de ingresos y, aunque los grandes cambios quedaban a veces lejos de su alcance, no dejaban de influir en el devenir diario del país. Analizar y trabajar sobre los vínculos entre estos dos espectros de ámbito local nos dará una perspectiva generalista del entramado estudiado.
