Abstract

Chen and Chv\'atal conjectured in 2008 that in any finite metric space either there is a line containing all the points - a universal line -, or the number of lines is at least the number of points. This is a generalization of a classical result due to Erd\H{o}s that says that a set of $n$ non-collinear points in the Euclidean plane defines at least $n$ different lines. A line of a metric space with metric $\rho$ is defined in terms of a notion called the betweenness of the space which is the set of all triples $(x,z,y)$ such that $\rho(x,y)=\rho(x,z)+\rho(z,y)$. In this work we prove that for each $n\geq 4$ there are $p_3(n)$ non isomorphic betweennesses arising from \emph{quasimetric} spaces with $n$ points, without universal lines and with exactly 3 lines, where $p_3(n)$ is the number of partitions of an integer $n$ into three parts. We also prove that for $n\geq 5$, there are $2p_3(n-1)$ non isomorphic betweennesses arising from quasimetric spaces on $n$ points, without universal lines and with exactly 4 lines. Here two betweennesses are isomorphic if they are isomorphic as relational structures. None of the betweennesses mentioned above is metric which implies that Chen and Chv\'atal's conjecture is valid for metric spaces with at most five points., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The combined matrix is a very useful concept for many applications. Almost strictly sign regular (ASSR) matrices form an important structured class of matrices with two possible zero patterns, which are either type-I staircase or type-II staircase. We prove that, under an irreducibility condition, the pattern of zero and nonzero entries of an ASSR matrix is preserved by the corresponding combined matrix. Abstract

The proper conflict-free chromatic number, $\chi_{pcf}(G)$, of a graph $G$ is the least $k$ such that $G$ has a proper $k$-coloring in which for each non-isolated vertex there is a color appearing exactly once among its neighbors. The proper odd chromatic number, $\chi_{o}(G)$, of $G$ is the least $k$ such that $G$ has a proper coloring in which for every non-isolated vertex there is a color appearing an odd number of times among its neighbors. We say that a graph class $\mathcal{G}$ is $\chi_{pcf}$-bounded ($\chi_{o}$-bounded) if there is a function $f$ such that $\chi_{pcf}(G) \leq f(\chi(G))$ ($\chi_{o}(G) \leq f(\chi(G))$) for every $G \in \mathcal{G}$. Caro et al. (2022) asked for classes that are linearly $\chi_{pcf}$-bounded ($\chi_{pcf}$-bounded), and as a starting point, they showed that every claw-free graph $G$ satisfies $\chi_{pcf}(G) \le 2\Delta(G)+1$, which implies $\chi_{pcf}(G) \le 4\chi(G)+1$. In this paper, we improve the bound for claw-free graphs to a nearly tight bound by showing that such a graph $G$ satisfies $\chi_{pcf}(G) \le \Delta(G)+6$, and even $\chi_{pcf}(G) \le \Delta(G)+4$ if it is a quasi-line graph. These results also give evidence for a conjecture by Caro et al. Moreover, we show that convex-round graphs and permutation graphs are linearly $\chi_{pcf}$-bounded. For these last two results, we prove a lemma that reduces the problem of deciding if a hereditary class is linearly $\chi_{pcf}$-bounded to deciding if the bipartite graphs in the class are $\chi_{pcf}$-bounded by an absolute constant. This lemma complements a theorem of Liu (2022) and motivates us to study boundedness in bipartite graphs. In particular, we show that biconvex bipartite graphs are $\chi_{pcf}$-bounded while convex bipartite graphs are not even $\chi_o$-bounded, and exhibit a class of bipartite circle graphs that is linearly $\chi_o$-bounded but not $\chi_{pcf}$-bounded., Comment: 24 pages, 1 figure. Abstract

Cell-based models provide a helpful approach for simulating complex systems that exhibit adaptive, resilient qualities, such as cancer. Their focus on individual cell interactions makes them a particularly appropriate strategy to study the effects of cancer therapies, which often are designed to disrupt single-cell dynamics. In this work, we also propose them as viable methods for studying the time evolution of cancer imaging biomarkers (IBM). We propose a cellular automata model for tumor growth and three different therapies: chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy, following well-established modeling procedures documented in the literature. The model generates a sequence of tumor images, from which time series of two biomarkers: entropy and fractal dimension, is obtained. Our model shows that the fractal dimension increased faster at the onset of cancer cell dissemination, while entropy was more responsive to changes induced in the tumor by the different therapy modalities. These observations suggest that the predictive value of the proposed biomarkers could vary considerably with time. Thus, it is important to assess their use at different stages of cancer and for different imaging modalities. Another observation derived from the results was that both biomarkers varied slowly when the applied therapy attacked cancer cells in a scattered fashion along the automatons' area, leaving multiple independent clusters of cells at the end of the treatment. Thus, patterns of change of simulated biomarkers time series could reflect on essential qualities of the spatial action of a given cancer intervention., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

We present a method to derive new explicit expressions for bidiagonal decompositions of Vandermonde and related matrices such as the (q-, h-) Bernstein-Vandermonde ones, among others. These results generalize the existing expressions for nonsingular matrices to matrices of arbitrary rank. For totally nonnegative matrices of the above classes, the new decompositions can be computed efficiently and to high relative accuracy componentwise in floating point arithmetic. In turn, matrix computations (e.g., eigenvalue computation) can also be performed efficiently and to high relative accuracy.

8. A Values Based Leadership Approach to (Re)defining Latino Manhood and Masculinity

Abstract

Utilizing a values-based leadership philosophy, the authors explored how Latino undergraduate men make meaning of their masculinity and how this meaning shapes their understanding and performance of leadership. The findings highlighted Familismo Leadership as a form of leadership practiced by Latino men related to how they define masculinity as a form of strength, identify the role of provider as a form of leadership, and consider the performance of leadership as direct action. Recommendations include the importance of an approach to research and practice that engages Latino undergraduate men students via leadership development and involvement that is reflective of the way Latino masculine gender identity and leadership performance is socialized within the social construct of familismo.

10. Portfolio Choice with Indivisible and Illiquid Housing Assets: The Case of Spain

Abstract

This paper studies the investment decision of the Spanish households using a unique data set, the Spanish Survey of Household Finance (EFF). We propose a theoretical model in which households, given a fixed investment in housing, allocate their net wealth across bank time deposits, stocks, and mortgage. Besides considering housing as an indivisible and illiquid asset that restricts the portfolio choice decision, we take into account the financial constraints that households face when they apply for external funding. For every representative household in the EFF we solve this theoretical problem and obtain the theoretically optimal portfolio that is compared with households' actual choices. We find that households significantly underinvest in stocks and deposits while the optimal and actual mortgage investments are alike. Considering the three types of financial assets at once, we find that the households headed by highly financially sophisticated, older, retired, richer, and unconstrained persons are the ones investing more efficiently.

11. Measuring Systemic Risk: Common Factor Exposures and Tail Dependence Effects

Abstract

We model systemic risk using a common factor that accounts for market-wide shocks and a tail dependence factor that accounts for linkages among extreme stock returns. Specifically, our theoretical model allows for firm-specific impacts of infrequent and extreme events. Using data on the four sectors of the U.S. financial industry from 1996 to 2011, we uncover two key empirical findings. First, disregarding the effect of the tail dependence factor leads to a downward bias in the measurement of systemic risk, especially during weak economic times. Second, when these measures serve as leading indicators of the St. Louis Fed Financial Stress Index, measures that include a tail dependence factor offer better forecasting ability than measures based on a common factor only.

12. Are all Credit Default Swap Databases equal?

Abstract

We compare the five major sources of corporate Credit Default Swap prices: GFI, Fenics, Reuters, CMA, and Markit, using the most liquid single name 5-year CDS in the iTraxx and CDX indexes from 2004 to 2010. Deviations from the common trend among prices in the different databases are not random but are explained by idiosyncratic factors, financing costs, global risk, and other trading factors. The CMA quotes lead the price discovery process. Moreover, we find that there is not a full agreement among databases in the results of the price discovery analysis between stock and CDS returns.

Abstract

This paper proposes a new measure of tail risk spillover. The empirical application provides evidence of significant volatility and tail risk spillovers from the financial sector to many real economy sectors in the U.S. economy in the period from 2001 to 2011. These spillovers increase in crisis periods. The conditional coexceedance in a given sector is positively related to its amount of debt financing, and negatively related to its relative valuation and investment. Real economy sectors which require substantial external financing, and whose value and investment activity are relatively lower, are prime candidates for depreciation in the wake of crisis in the financial sector.

15. Default Supply Auctions in Electricity Markets: Challenges and Proposals

Abstract

This paper studies premiums got by winning bidders in default supply auctions, and speculation and hedging activities in power derivatives markets in dates near auctions. Data includes fifty-six auction prices from 2007 to 2013, those of CESUR in the Spanish OMEL electricity market, and those of Basic Generation Service auctions (PJM-BGS) in New Jersey's PJM market. Winning bidders got an average ex-post yearly forward premium of 7% (CESUR) and 38% (PJM-BGS). The premium using an index of futures prices is 1.08% (CESUR) and 24% (PJM-BGS). Ex-post forward premium is negatively related to the number of bidders and spot price volatility. In CESUR, hedging-driven trading in power derivatives markets predominates around auction dates, but in PJM-BGS, speculation-driven trading prevails.

16. Time-zero Efficiency of European Power Derivatives Markets

Abstract

We study time-zero efficiency of electricity derivatives markets. By time-zero efficiency is meant a sequence of prices of derivatives contracts having the same underlying asset but different times to maturity which implies that prices comply with a set of efficiency conditions that prevent profitable time-zero arbitrage opportunities. We investigate whether statistical tests, based on the law of one price, and trading rules, based on price differentials and no-arbitrage violations, are useful for assessing time-zero efficiency. We apply tests and trading rules to daily data of three European power markets: Germany, France and Spain. In the case of the German market, after considering liquidity availability and transaction costs, results are not inconsistent with time-zero efficiency. However, in the case of the French and Spanish markets, limitations in liquidity and representativeness are challenges that prevent definite conclusions. Liquidity in French and Spanish markets should improve by using pricing and marketing incentives. These incentives should attract more participants into the electricity derivatives exchanges and should encourage them to settle OTC trades in clearinghouses. Publication of statistics on prices, volumes and open interest per type of participant should be promoted.

17. Tail Risk of Electricity Futures

Abstract

This paper compares the in-sample and out-of-sample performance of several models for computing the tail risk of one-month and one-year electricity futures contracts traded in the NordPool, French, German, and Spanish markets in 2008-2017. As measures of tail risk, we use the one-day-ahead Value-at-Risk (VaR) and the Expected Shortfall (ES). With VaR, the AR (1)-GARCH (1,1) model with Student-t distribution is the best-performing specification with 88% cases in which the Fisher test accepts the model, with a success rate of 94% in the left tail and of 81% in the right tail. The model passes the test of model adequacy in the 100% of the cases in the NordPool and German markets, but only in the 88% and 63% of the cases in the Spanish and French markets. With ES, this model passes the test of model adequacy in 100% of cases in all markets. Historical Simulation and Quantile Regression-based approaches misestimate tail risks. The right-hand tail of the returns is more difficult to model than the left-hand tail and therefore financial regulators and the administrators of futures markets should take these results into account when setting additional regulatory capital requirements and margin account regulations to short positions.

18. Are EU Climate and Energy Package 20-20-20 targets achievable and compatible? Evidence from the impact of renewables on electricity prices

Abstract

This paper studies the realizability and compatibility of the three CEP2020 targets, focusing on electricity prices. We study the impact of renewables and other fundamental determinants on wholesale and household retail electricity prices in ten EU countries from 2008 to 2016. Increases in production from renewables decrease wholesale electricity prices in all countries. As decreases in prices should promote consumption, an apparent contradiction emerges between the target of an increase in renewables and the target of a reduction in consumption. However, the impact of renewables on the non-energy part of household wholesale electricity prices is positive in six countries. Therefore, decreases in wholesale prices, that may compromise the CEP2020 target of decrease in consumption, do not necessarily translate into lower household retail prices.

26. Multiscale porosity in mesoporous bioglass 3D-printed scaffolds for bone regeneration

Abstract

In order to increase the bone forming ability of MBG-PCL composite scaffold, microporosity was created in the struts of 3D-printed MBG-PCL scaffolds for the manufacturing of a construct with a multiscale porosity consisting of meso-, micro- and macro-pores. 3D-printing imparted macroporosity while the microporosity was created by porogen removal from the struts, and the MBG particles were responsible for the mesoporosity. The scaffolds were 3D-printed using a mixture of PCL, MBG and phosphate buffered saline (PBS) particles, subsequently leached out. Microporous-PCL (pPCL) as a negative control, microporous MBG-PCL (pMBG-PCL) and non-microporous-MBG-PCL (MBG-PCL) were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy, mercury intrusion porosimetry and micro-computed tomography demonstrated that the PBS removal resulted in the formation of micropores inside the struts with porosity of around 30% for both pPCL and pMBG-PCL, with both constructs displaying an overall porosity of 80-90%. In contrast, the MBG-PCL group had a microporosity of 6% and an overall porosity of 70%. Early mineralisation was found in the pMBG-PCL post-leaching out and this resulted in the formation a more homogeneous calcium phosphate layer when using a biomimetic mineralisation assay. Mechanical properties ranged from 5 to 25 MPa for microporous and non-microporous specimens, hence microporosity was the determining factor affecting compressive properties. MC3T3-E1 metabolic activity was increased in the pMBG-PCL along with an increased production of RUNX2. Latino, Black, American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN), and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander people have the highest hospitalizations and death rates from COVID-19. Social inequalities have exacerbated COVID-19 related health disparities. This study examines social and structural determinants of COVID-19 vaccine uptake. Results from logistic regressions suggest Latino and Black people were less likely to be vaccinated. People that did not have health insurance, a primary care doctor and were unemployed were more than 30% less likely to be vaccinated for COVID-19. Greater perceived health inequalities in one's neighborhood and perceived racial/ethnic discrimination were associated with a decreased odds in being vaccinated. People that suffered the loss of a household member from COVID-19 were three times more likely to have been vaccinated. Establishing policies that will increase access to health insurance and create jobs with living wages may have lasting impacts. Abstract

3D porous scaffolds based on agarose and nanocrystalline apatite, two structural components that act as a temporary mineralized extracellular matrix, were prepared by the GELPOR3D method. This shaping technology allows the introduction of thermally-labile molecules within the scaffolds during the fabrication procedure. An angiogenic protein, Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor, and an antibiotic, cephalexin, loaded in mesoporous silica nanoparticles, were included to design multifunctional scaffolds for bone reconstruction. The dual release of both molecules showed a pro-angiogenic behaviour in chicken embryos grown ex ovo, while, at the same time providing an antibiotic local concentration capable of inhibiting Staphylococcus aureus bacterial growth. In this sense, different release patterns, monitored by UV-spectroscopy, could be tailored as a function of the cephalexin loading strategy. The scaffold surface was characterized by a high hydrophilicity, as determined by contact angle measurements, that facilitated the adhesion and proliferation of preosteoblastic cells., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

We present a limits-to-arbitrage model to study the impact of securitization, leverage and credit risk protection on the cyclicity of bank credit. In a stable bank credit situation, no cycles of credit expansion or contraction appear. Unlevered securitization together with mis-pricing of securitized assets increases lending cyclicality, favoring credit booms and busts. Leverage changes the state of affairs with respect to the simple securitization. First, the volume of real activity and banking profits increases. Second, banks sell securities when markets decline. This selling puts further pressure on falling prices. The mis-pricing of credit risk protection or securitized assets influences the real economy. Trading in these contracts reduces the amount of funding available to entrepreneurs, particularly to high-credit-risk borrowers. This trading decreases the liquidity of the securitized assets, and especially those based on investments with high credit risk., Comment: 33 pages
