A geochronological and isotope–geochemical study of alkaline basalts from three areas of young magmatism within the northeastern part of the Arabian Plate (Southeastern Turkey), Batman, Kurtalan and Alemdağ, was carried out. The obtained isotope data have indicated that the volcanism in the studied region developed over a 5-Ma period from the end of Miocene to the middle Pleistocene during four pulses separated by breaks in magmatic activity: 6.1–4.9 Ma (Batman area, hawaiites), ~3.0 Ma (Alemdağ plateau, phase I, basalts), 2.0–1.9 Ma (Alemdağ plateau, phase II, tephrites), and 1.5–1.3 Ma (Alemdağ plateau, phase III, basalts; Kurtalan area, basalts). A comparison of spatial–temporal changes of magmatic activity evolution in the studied part of the Arabian Plate and within the largest basalt plateau of Arabian foreland, Karacadağ Plateau, located to the west, was carried out. The results of Sr–Nd–Pb isotope–geochemical studies show that the development of young basalt volcanism in the Arabian Plate was characterized at different time by the contribution of various mantle sources in magma generation under this region. Initial pulses of magmatic activity are associated with melting of Arabian subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM). The processes of fractional crystallization combined with crustal assimilation (AFC) have played an important role in the petrogenesis of lavas as well. Later, a deep mantle source (PREMA) with a depleted isotopic composition played a leading role in the formation of basaltic magmas of increased alkalinity. The melts generated by this source were mixed with the SCLM material in various proportions at different stages of magmatism with a limited participation of AFC processes in the petrogenesis of the rocks. It was concluded that young basalt volcanism of increased alkalinity in the northeast of the Arabian Plate is not related to the collision of the Eurasian and Arabian plates genetically, but presumably manifested here as a result of the migration of the initial rift geodynamic setting from the Red Sea basin to the north along Levantine and East Anatolian transform faults due to directed convection flows in the lower part of mantle under this part of the Earth. Abstract—The Rudny Altai metallogenic province, which is concordant to the structures of the eponymous terrane and located in the Central Asian orogenic belt (CAOB), is one of the largest volcanic massive sulfide (VMS) provinces in the world. Lead isotopic composition of galena (61 samples in total) was measured for the first time with high accuracy (±0.02%, SD) for 20 sulfide base metal deposits representing the dominant Kuroko type in the Rudny Altai. They are enclosed in the Early–Middle Devonian volcano-sedimentary sequence in association with volcanic rocks of the bimodal basalt-rhyolite series. We studied the large and superlarge deposits of this type: Ridder-Sokol'noe, Tishinskoe, Novo-Leninogorskoe, Zyryanovskoe, Zmeinogorskoe, and Korbalikha. In the province, the isotope ratios 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb vary within narrow limits. At average values of 206Pb/204Pb = 17.820, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.517 and 208Pb/204Pb = 37.669, the root mean square variations (variation coefficient, %) are 0.22, 0.038 and 0.063% respectively. Even more homogeneous composition is observed within ore districts of the province (0.054, 0.012 and 0.020%) and especially within deposits (0.025, 0.010 and 0.013%), where the scale of variations of lead isotope ratios reaches their measurement error (±0.02%). The lead isotopic composition in the province shows no isotopic "signatures" of juvenile (asthenospheric) origin. The evolutionary characteristics of the lead source (its depletion in uranium, the old model Pb-Pb age, and moderate values of the µ2 parameter) together with the persistent isotopic composition allow us to regard the lithospheric mantle consisting of metasomatized and recycled rocks as its source. This source was of regional significance, chemically (U-Th-Pb) and isotopically (Pb-Pb) homogeneous, and common for all deposits. Among other CAOB terranes, including the Chinese Altai, the 206Pb, 207Pb and 208Pb isotopes in the ore lead of the Rudny Altai terrane have the least radiogenic composition. The previously noted (Chiaradia et al., 2006) systematic decrease of radiogenic isotope content in the lead of ores and rocks of the CAOB terranes from the southwest to the northeast correlates with a decrease in the lower crustal contribution in the same direction in their composition, where fragments and blocks of Precambrian crust are also involved. The peculiarity of the Pb isotopic composition of the Rudny Altai terrane is largely determined by the absence of Precambrian crustal blocks in its composition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We studied the Pb, Sr, and U isotopic composition and the concentration of toxic metal elements in sediment core samples collected in Lake Balaton at a sediment trap that was deep dredged in 1979, to analyze their changes in the last 40 years. Pb isotopic composition profiles of cores taken from the sediment trap showed different 206Pb/207Pb ratios ranging from 1.206 ± 0.002 at the bottom of the core (phase 1) compared to 1.185 ± 0.002 at the top of the core (phase 2). Phase 2 is the fraction reflecting isotopic signatures of the latest 40 years. At 80–100-cm depth, a transition zone was observed. Pb concentration together with Zn, Sb, Cu, Cd, and Fe showed elevated, 2–4 times higher values in the top phase of the sediment. The calculated Pb isotopic composition of pollutant Pb fraction was 1.177 ± 0.005 in the case of the 206Pb/207Pb and 2.456 ± 0.004 for 208Pb/207Pb, which shows good agreement with literature data for lead ores in Poland and Germany, but it is distinct from literature data for leaded fuel concerning Middle and Eastern Europe. The marked difference in the Pb signatures of phases enabled the construction of a sediment deposition rate map. U and Mo showed a characteristic concentration peak positioned exactly at the depth of the Pb signature transition. The isotopic signature of U based on 234U and 235U also showed a similar pattern. We suggest that the deposition of U and Mo can be related to cyanobacterial blooms in Lake Balaton in the late 1970s and early1980s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study is to reveal the effects of regional human activity on trace metal accumulation in remote alpine ecosystems under long-distance atmospheric transport. Trace metals (Cd, Pb, and Zn) in soils of the Mt. Luoji, Southwest China, were investigated along a large altitudinal gradient [2200–3850 m above sea level (a.s.l.)] to elaborate the key factors controlling their distribution by Pb isotopic composition and statistical models. The concentrations of Cd, Pb, and Zn in the surface soils (O and A horizons) were relatively low at the altitudes of 3500–3700 m a.s.l. The enrichment factors of trace metals in the surface soils increased with altitude. After normalization for soil organic matter, the concentrations of Cd still increased with altitude, whereas those of Pb and Zn did not show a clear altitudinal trend. The effects of vegetation and cold trapping (CTE) (pollutant enrichment by decreasing temperature with increasing altitude) mainly determined the distribution of Cd and Pb in the O horizon, whereas CTE and bedrock weathering (BW) controlled that of Zn. In the A horizon, the distribution of Cd and Pb depended on the vegetation regulation, whereas that of Zn was mainly related to BW. Human activity, including ores mining and fossil fuels combustion, increased the trace metal deposition in the surface soils. The anthropogenic percentage of Cd, Pb, and Zn quantified 92.4, 67.8, and 42.9% in the O horizon, and 74.5, 33.9, and 24.9% in the A horizon, respectively. The anthropogenic metals deposited at the high altitudes of Mt. Luoji reflected the impact of long-range atmospheric transport on this remote alpine ecosystem from southern and southwestern regions. This study examined the recycling of lead (Pb) in ash from wildfires, its source and potential contribution to environmental contamination. Ash from wildfires was collected from four Australian sites following uncontrolled fires during 2012 to 2013 close to major urban populations in Sydney (New South Wales), Hobart (Tasmania) and Adelaide (South Australia). The samples were analysed for their total Pb concentration and Pb isotopic composition to determine the sources of Pb and the extent, if any, of industrial contamination and its recycling into the ecosystem. Median ash concentrations (23 mg/kg) released from a wildfire close to Australia's largest city, Sydney, exceeded the median ash Pb concentrations from wildfires from the less populated locations of Hobart, Adelaide and NSW Central Coast. Lead isotopic compositions of Duffys Forest wildfire ash demonstrate that anthropogenic inputs from legacy leaded petrol depositions were the predominant source of contamination. Despite the cessation of leaded petrol use in Australia in 2002, historic petrol Pb deposits continue to be a substantial source of contamination in ash: petrol Pb contributed 35% of the Pb in the Woy Woy ash, 73% in Duffys Forest ash, 39% in Forcett ash and 5% in Cherryville ash. The remobilisation of legacy industrial Pb depositions by wildfires in ash results in it being a persistent and problematic contaminant in contemporary environmental systems because of its known toxicity. The paper reports the results of Pb isotope study of several gold deposits of the Russia's largest metallogenic province of Northern Transbaikalia. Potential sources of the ore material are considered by the example of new and previously published Pb-Pb data on nine deposits and occurrences of different scales. The comparison of Pb-Pb isotope-geochemical characteristics of ores, Paleozoic granitoids, as well as metamorphic pyrite from barren metasedimentary sequences shows that the Neoproterozoic terrigenous-carbonate rocks of the Baikal-Patom fold belt (BPB) served as the main source of lead and other components in the mineral-forming systems of the deposits. Significant variations of Pb isotope ratios typical in general of the considered deposits of the BPB reflect the initial isotopic heterogeneity of Pb source. This heterogeneity is caused by mixing of two geochemical types of continental crust during sedimentation: old (Early Precambrian) crust of the Siberian craton with long-term geochemical evolution and newly formed Late Precambrian crust. The fuzzy comprehensive assessment was undertaken to evaluate the marine sediment quality in Daya Bay, China based on the monitoring data of 2015 and China National Standard for Marine Sediment Quality (GB 18668-2002). The results demonstrated that the average metal concentrations (mg/kg) were 0.08 (Cd), 51.30 (Pb), 91.30 (Cr), 29.63 (Cu), 143.42 (Zn), 0.03 (Hg), and 7.31 (As), which were clearly higher with respect to their corresponding background values. Cr was the major pollutant based weight matrices calculated. Taken as whole, the membership degree of class I was a range from 0.65 to 1, suggesting that the marine sediment quality in Daya Bay belongs to class I. Pb stable isotopic analysis coupled with geographic information system (GIS) approach showed the sedimentary Pb mainly originated from petrochemical industry at northwest coast of Daya Bay. We report on the chemical and Pb isotopic compositions of epiphytic lichens collected from small tree branches in the urban area of the city of Metz (NE France). Lichens were collected in five different years between 2001 and 2009. The data are first compared year to year in order to document any temporal change and trend in metal atmospheric fallout. The area studied was then subdivided into different zones on the basis of land use (urban, suburban, rural and industrial) in order to determine potential spatial gradients. The median concentrations and enrichment factors (EF, normalized to Al) of Pb and other metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Ni, Cr, Hg, Fe) in lichens from the urban, suburban, and rural zones show no systematic variation between 2001 and 2008. However, the metal EFs show spatial variation and are generally highest in the urban area and lowest in the rural area. Lichens within the industrial zone (collected in 2009), which is dominated by steel industries, are richest in Al, Fe, Cr, Pb, and Zn. Although the Al concentration is high in these lichens, the EFs for the cited metals are several times higher than those measured in lichens from the other three zones. No significant differences were noted for Hg, Cd, Cu and or Ni. Pb isotopic compositions measured in lichens may be highly variable from year to year and from zone to zone. The variation is primarily interpreted to result from mixing between: (i) Pb added to gasoline (and recycled through re-emission of road dust in the atmosphere); (ii) regional industrial Pb from long-range transportation and/or mixed with urban Pb; and (iii) local industrial Pb. The median isotopic compositions of individual zones are distinct, suggesting variable mixing of these three sources. The annual variations show that 2001 was most affected by gasoline Pb, whereas 2003 and 2006 were more affected by the local steel industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Torngchanghe native copper-chalcocite deposit at Ninglang occurs in low-Ti basalts of western Yunnan, and the mode of fault-filling & metasomatism metallogenesis indicates that this deposit is of late-stage hydrothermal origin. This makes it more complicated to define the source of ore-forming materials. This paper introduces the Pb isotope data of Himalayan alkali-rich porphyries, regional Early-Middle Proterozoic metamorphic rock basement and various types of rocks of the mining district in western Yunnan with an attempt to constrain the origin of the Tongchanghe native copper-chalcocite deposit at Ninglang. The results showed that the ores are relatively homogeneous in Pb isotopic composition, implying a simple ore-forming material source. The three sets of Pb isotopic ratios in the Himalayan alkali-rich porphyries are all higher than those of the ores: the regional basement metamorphic rocks shhow a wide range of variation in Pb isotopic ratio, quite different from the isotopic composition of ore lead; the Pb isotopic composition of the Triassic sedimentary rocks anti mudstone and siltstone interbeds in the late Permian Heinishao Formation (corresponding to the forth cycle of basaltic eruption) in tile mining district has the characteristics of radiogenic lead anti is significantly different from the isotopic composition of ore lead; like the ores, the Emaishan basalts in the mining district and those regionally distributed possess the same Pb isotopic composition, showing a complete overlap with respect to their distribution range. From the above, the possibilities can be ruled out that the ore-forming materials of the Tongchanghe deposit were derived from the basement, a variety of Himalayan magmatic activities, etc. It is thereby defined that the ore-forming materials were derived largely from the Emeishan basalts. From the data available it is deduced that the native cupper-chalcocite-type metallogenesis that occurred in the Emeishan basalt-distributed area has the same metal source as the Tongchanghe deposit. Atmospheric heavy metal contamination is becoming a serious threat to environmental and human health in Chinese megacities. This study evaluated the concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) and Pb isotopic compositions in herbarium and native bryophytes collected from Guangzhou from 1932 to 2018. Relatively low mean metal concentrations were measured for bryophytes collected in the 1930s. The highest mean concentrations of Cd (0.72 ± 0.32 mg/kg), Cu (28.1 ± 9.8 mg/kg), Pb (125.9 ± 62.4 mg/kg) and Zn (273 ± 130 mg/kg) were found in the bryophytes from 1979 to 2000, following the commencement of the Reform and Opening-Up Program in 1978. The mean Pb concentrations (74.7 ± 6.3 mg/kg) decreased sharply from 2001 onwards, following the cessation of leaded petrol across the Chinese mainland in 2000. However, these values are still higher than those in 1950–1978, corresponding to a significant increase in atmospheric Pb emissions from coal combustion, nonferrous metal smelting and motor vehicle petrol consumption in China in the 2000s. The lead isotopic ratios of bryophyte archives (206Pb/207Pb 1.141–1.229, 208Pb/207Pb 2.376–2.482) indicate that lithogenic input and anthropogenic input arising from leaded petrol and industrial emissions have been the main sources of atmospheric heavy metal deposition in the city of Guangzhou over the past 85 years. • Pb isotopic variations exceed uncertainties by up to 2 orders of magnitude both at 10m and cm scales. • Pb isotope diagrams require at least seven isotopically well distinct fluid circulation episodes. • S isotopic compositions show heterogeneities. • Leaching of country rocks can produce observed Pb isotope composition and trace element patterns. • Different end-members identified by the Pb isotope correlation can be linked to different country rocks. The Janggun lead-zinc-(silver) deposit in South Korea was formed by hydrothermal-metasomatic processes. We collected 12 samples over a 100 m transect in one of the five orebodies recognized in the deposit and analyzed a total of 68 sulfide minerals. Detailed mineralogical observations show successive modifications and overprint of pristine sulfide by replacement reactions, suggesting several distinct petrogenetic events. We distinguished four different phase assemblages, which occur in contiguous zones of the transect. This suggests multiple alteration fronts. Major and minor element concentrations of sulfide phases were measured for the different sulfide generations. Milligram-sized sulfide mineral samples were micro-drilled for Pb and S isotope analyses with a resolution of 200 µm to 1 mm. Pb and S isotopic compositions (206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, 208Pb/204Pb and δ34S) are variable, showing 206Pb/204Pb ranges from 18.334 to 18.879, 207Pb/204Pb; 15.667 to 15.692, and 208Pb/204Pb; 38.682 to 38.899, and δ34S ranges from + 4.4 to + 6.2‰. Although Pb isotopic compositions and δ34S data are similar to literature data from different areas of the Janggun deposit, the Pb isotopic variations between the different samples (at the 10 m scale), and within individual polished sections (at the cm scale) are well over 100 times larger than the analytical uncertainty. The scatter in sulfur isotopic compositions confirms the Pb isotopic heterogeneity at both the cm and 10 m scales. At least seven isotopically well distinct fluid circulation episodes are required in the study area to explain different projections of common-denominator Pb isotope diagrams. This suggests that fluid pulses of distinct chemical and isotopic compositions circulated in distinct spatial and temporal episodes. To investigate the role of country rocks as sources of the metals transported by the ore-forming fluids, we leached 13 samples of country rocks (Janggun limestone, Chunyang granite, granophyre, and dyke) with dilute acid and analyzed both leachates and residues. Correlations are observed between Pb isotopic compositions and trace ratios (e.g. Co/Ni, Cu/Ag, and Zn/Cd). The Pb isotopic compositions of country rocks and Precambrian basement suggest that leaching of country rocks by circulating fluids is able to produce the observed Pb isotope and trace elements variations in the sulfide minerals, whereby different end-members in the isotope correlation diagrams can be linked to different country rocks. Lead (Pb) isotopic composition analysis is a useful tool to accurately identify the origin of Pb in environmental media. The existing calculation method of the contribution of Pb sources from Pb isotope ratios greatly restricted the development of Pb contamination source apportionment. In the present study, a new distance model for calculating the mass proportion of Pb sources, which is based on the distance between the samples and the possible Pb sources in the Pb isotope ratios plot, was presented. The inverse distance model was applied to calculate the contribution proportion of two Pb sources in three previous studies. The average absolute differences between the proportions calculated by the conventional binary mixing equation and the inverse distance model were 0.21%, 1% and 1.9%, respectively, indicating that the new model agreeably calculated the contribution of two Pb sources. The anthropogenic sources proportion (52%) calculated by the inverse distance model of three Pb sources to park soil Pb in Shanghai was comparable to the result that was calculated by the conventional ternary mixing equation (53%), which showed the validity of the new model in calculating the contribution proportion of three Pb sources. Rational results were obtained by the inverse distance model in calculating the contribution of four Pb sources, illustrating that the new model has potential use in calculating the apportionment of four or more Pb sources.
