Automated knowledge extraction from scientific literature can potentially accelerate materials discovery. We have investigated an approach for extracting synthesis protocols for reticular materials from scientific literature using large language models (LLMs). To that end, we introduce a Knowledge Extraction Pipeline (KEP) that automatizes LLM-assisted paragraph classification and information extraction. By applying prompt engineering with in-context learning (ICL) to a set of open-source LLMs, we demonstrate that LLMs can retrieve chemical information from PDF documents, without the need for fine-tuning or training and at a reduced risk of hallucination. By comparing the performance of five open-source families of LLMs in both paragraph classification and information extraction tasks, we observe excellent model performance even if only few example paragraphs are included in the ICL prompts. The results show the potential of the KEP approach for reducing human annotations and data curation efforts in automated scientific knowledge extraction., Comment: 16 pages

Dispersion measures (DM) of fast radio bursts (FRBs) probe the density of electrons in the intergalactic medium (IGM) along their lines-of-sight, including the average density versus distance to the source and its variations in direction. While previous study focused on low-redshift, FRBs are potentially detectable out to high redshift, where their DMs can, in principle, probe the epoch of reionization (EOR) and its patchiness. We present the first predictions from large-scale, radiation-hydrodynamical simulation of fully-coupled galaxy formation and reionization, using Cosmic Dawn (``CoDa")~II to model the density and ionization fields of the universe down to redshifts through the end of the EOR at $z_{re}\approx6.1$. Combining this with an N-body simulation CoDa~II--Dark Matter of the fully-ionized epoch from the EOR to the present, we calculate the mean and standard deviation of FRB DMs as functions of their source redshift. The mean and standard deviation of DM increase with redshift, reaching a plateau by $z(x_{HII}\lesssim0.25)\gtrsim8$, i.e. well above $z_{re}$. The mean-DM asymptote $\mathcal{DM}_{max} \approx 5900~\mathrm{pc\, cm^{-3}}$ reflects the end of the EOR and its duration. The standard deviation there is $\sigma_{DM, max}\approx497 ~\mathrm{pc\, cm^{-3}}$, reflecting inhomogeneities of both patchy reionization and density. Inhomogeneities in ionization during the EOR contribute $\mathcal{O}(1$ per cent) of this value of $\sigma_{DM,max}$ from FRBs at redshifts $z\gtrsim 8$. Consensus is arguably the most studied problem in distributed computing as a whole, and particularly in the distributed message-passing setting. In this latter framework, research on consensus has considered various hypotheses regarding the failure types, the memory constraints, the algorithmic performances (e.g., early stopping and obliviousness), etc. Surprisingly, almost all of this work assumes that messages are passed in a \emph{complete} network, i.e., each process has a direct link to every other process. Set-agreement, a relaxed variant of consensus, has also been heavily studied in the message-passing setting, yet research on it has also been limited to complete networks. A noticeable exception is the recent work of Casta\~neda et al. (Inf. Comput. 2023) who designed a generic oblivious algorithm for consensus running in $\radius(G,t)$ rounds in every graph $G$, when up to $t$ nodes can crash by irrevocably stopping, where $t$ is smaller than the node-connectivity $\kappa$ of $G$. Here, $\radius(G,t)$ denotes a graph parameter called the \emph{radius of $G$ whenever up to $t$ nodes can crash}. For $t=0$, this parameter coincides with $\radius(G)$, the standard radius of a graph, and, for $G=K_n$, the running time $\radius(K_n,t)=t +1$ of the algorithm exactly matches the known round-complexity of consensus in the clique $K_n$. Our main result is a proof that $\radius(G,t)$ rounds are necessary for oblivious algorithms solving consensus in $G$ when up to $t$ nodes can crash, thus validating a conjecture of Casta\~neda et al., and demonstrating that their consensus algorithm is optimal for any graph $G$. Finally, we extend the study of consensus in the $t$-resilient model in arbitrary graphs to the case where the number $t$ of failures is not necessarily smaller than the connectivity $\kappa$ of the considered graph., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures

We propose a model that can describe the entire range of FRBs, from non-repeating to highly prolific repeaters. Coherent radio waves in these bursts are produced in the polar cap region of a magnetar, where magnetic field lines are open. The angle between the rotation and magnetic axes, relative to the angular size of the polar cap region, partially determines the repetition rate and polarization properties of FRBs. We discuss how many of the properties of repeating FRBs - such as their lack of periodicity, energetics, small PA swing, spectro-temporal correlation and inferred low source density are explained by this model. The systematic PA swing and the periodic modulation of long duration bursts from non-repeaters are also natural outcomes. We derive a lower limit of about 400 on the Lorentz factor of FRB sources using this model for bursts with a linear polarization degree greater than 95%., Comment: Submitted

We present the localization and host galaxy of FRB 20190208A, a repeating source of fast radio bursts (FRBs) discovered using CHIME/FRB. As part of the PRECISE repeater localization program on the EVN, we monitored FRB 20190208A for 65.6 hours at $\sim1.4$ GHz and detected a single burst, which led to its VLBI localization with 260 mas uncertainty (2$\sigma$). Follow-up optical observations with the MMT Observatory ($i\gtrsim 25.7$ mag (AB)) found no visible host at the FRB position. Subsequent deeper observations with the GTC, however, revealed an extremely faint galaxy ($r=27.32 \pm0.16$ mag), very likely ($99.95 \%$) associated with FRB 20190208A. Given the dispersion measure of the FRB ($\sim580$ pc cm$^{-3}$), even the most conservative redshift estimate ($z_{\mathrm{max}}\sim0.83$) implies that this is the lowest-luminosity FRB host to date ($\lesssim10^8L_{\odot}$), even less luminous than the dwarf host of FRB 20121102A. We investigate how localization precision and the depth of optical imaging affect host association, and discuss the implications of such a low-luminosity dwarf galaxy. Unlike the other repeaters with low-luminosity hosts, FRB 20190208A has a modest Faraday rotation measure of a few tens of rad m$^{-2}$, and EVN plus VLA observations reveal no associated compact persistent radio source. We also monitored FRB 20190208A for 40.4 hours over 2 years as part of the \'ECLAT repeating FRB monitoring campaign on the Nan\c{c}ay Radio Telescope, and detected one burst. Our results demonstrate that, in some cases, the robust association of an FRB with a host galaxy will require both high localization precision, as well as deep optical follow-up., Comment: submitted to ApJL

This is a pedagogical paper where we present a physically motivated approach to introduce the coherent states of a harmonic oscillator from which it is simple to rigorously derive their mathematical definition. We do this in two different ways that turn out to be equivalent but emphasize two related but different aspects of classicality. First, we analyze which are the quantum states that are the closest one can get to a point in phase space and demonstrate the validity of the following theorem: (i) The product of the uncertainty in position and that of momentum saturates the bound imposed by Heisenberg uncertainty relations for all times if and only if the state is an eigenstate of the annihilation operator. Second, we analyze the way in which the difference between the expectation value of the energy and the energy associated with the expectation values of position and momentum depends on the state, and show the validity of the following theorem (ii) the difference between the expectation value of the energy and the energy associated with the expectation values is minimal if and only if the state is an eigenstate of the annihilation operator. We also show that the reason why coherent states are chosen as the most classical ones by the decoherence process induced by coupling the particle to an environment in the standard Quantum Brownian motion model, is precisely due to the validity of the two above theorems.

The future neutrino research program will require improved precision. A major source of uncertainty is the interaction of neutrinos with nuclei that serve as targets for such experiments. Broadly speaking, this interaction often depends, e.g., for Charge-Current Quasi-Elastic (CCQE) scattering, on the combination of "nucleon physics" expressed by form factors and "nuclear physics" expressed by a nuclear model. It is important to get a good handle on both. This talk presents a fully analytic implementation of the Correlated Fermi Gas (CFG) Model for CCQE electron-nuclei and neutrino-nuclei scattering. Electrification, a key strategy in combating climate change, is transforming industries, and off-highway machines (OHM) will be next to transition from combustion engines and hydraulic actuation to sustainable fully electrified machines. Electromechanical linear actuators (EMLAs) offer superior efficiency, safety, and reduced maintenance, and they unlock vast potential for high-performance autonomous operations. However, a key challenge lies in optimizing the kinematic parameters of OHMs' on-board manipulators for EMLA integration to exploit the full capabilities of actuation systems and maximize their performance. This work addresses this challenge by delving into the structural optimization of a prevalent closed kinematic chain configuration commonly employed in OHM manipulators. Our approach aims to retain the manipulator's existing capabilities while reducing its energy expenditure, paving the way for a greener future in industrial automation, one in which sustainable and high-performing robotized OHMs can evolve. The feasibility of our methodology is validated through simulation results obtained on a commercially available parallel-serial heavy-duty manipulator mounted on a battery electric vehicle. Late-stage Ca-sulfate-filled fractures are common on Mars. Notably, the Shenandoah formation in the western edge of Jezero crater preserves a variety of Ca-sulfate minerals in the fine-grained siliciclastic rocks explored by the Perseverance rover. However, the depositional environment and timing of the formation of these sulfates is unknown. To address this outstanding problem, we developed a new technique to map the crystal textures of these sulfates in situ at two stratigraphically similar locations in the Shenandoah formation, allowing us to constrain the burial depth and paleoenvironment at the time of their deposition. Our results suggest that some Ca-sulfate analyzed was formed at a burial depth greater than 80m, whereas Ca-sulfates present at another outcrop likely precipitated in a shallow-subsurface environment. These results indicate that samples collected for potential return to Earth at the two studied locations capture two different times and distinct chemical conditions in the depositional history of the Shenandoah formation providing multiple opportunities to evaluate surface and subsurface habitability.

Non-equilibrium phase transitions of open quantum systems generically exhibit diverging classical but not quantum correlations. Still entanglement -- characterizing the latter correlations -- can be sensitive to the phase transition. Furthermore, mutual information, bounding the total correlations, should exhibit critical scaling at the transition. In this work, we study these quantities in the steady state of open quantum Ising chains with power-law interactions (with the exponent $0\le \alpha \le 3$) where spins are subject to spontaneous emission. The bulk of this paper is dedicated to a detailed analytical as well as numerical analysis of the infinite-range model ($\alpha=0$), a model that is closely related to the paradigmatic open Dicke model. Our main findings are that the entanglement, while being finite, peaks, exhibits a kink and takes a universal value at the transition, while the mutual information exhibits critical scaling not only at the transition but well into the ordered phase, underscoring a hidden criticality that is not captured by (two-point) correlations. We consider three distinct entanglement measures: logarithmic negativity; quantum Fisher information; and, spin squeezing. Specifically, we show that the collective spin operator that maximizes the quantum Fisher information can be identified with the \textit{gapless} mode of the phase transition, while the squeezed direction is that of the \textit{gapped} mode. Finally, we investigate power-law interacting models using matrix product states where we find comparable bounds on squeezing even when no phase transition is expected (for larger $\alpha$), thus the connection to the phase transition does not appear to hold for shorter-range interactions.

We prove that the automorphism group of an affine, cubic surface with equation $xyz=g(x,y)$ contains ${\mathbb Z}$ as a finite index subgroup. These equations were first studied by Mordell. v.2: small changes, references updated.

Air-vented ionization chambers exposed to clinical radiation beams may suffer from recombination during the drift of the charge carriers towards the electrodes. Thus, dosimetry protocols recommend the use of a correction factor, usually denominated saturation factor ($k_{\rm sat}$), to correct the ionization chamber readout for the incomplete collection of charge. The two-voltage method is the recommended methodology for the calculation of the saturation factor, however, it is based on the early Boag model, which only takes into account the presence of positive and negative ions in the ionization chamber and does not account for the electric field screening or the free electron contribution to the signal. The numerical simulation shows a better agreement with the experimental data than the current analytical theories in terms of charge collection efficiency. The classical two-voltage method, systematically overestimates the saturation factor, with differences increasing with dose per pulse also present at low dose per pulse. These results may have implications for the dosimetry with ionization chambers in therapy modalities that use a dose per pulse higher than conventional radiotherapy such as intraoperative radiotherapy but also in conventional dose per pulse for ionization chambers that suffer from significant charge recombination.

Semiconductor quantum dot arrays are a promising platform to perform spin-based error-corrected quantum computation with large numbers of qubits. However, due to the diverging number of possible charge configurations combined with the limited sensitivity of large-footprint charge sensors, achieving single-spin occupancy in each dot in a growing quantum dot array is exceedingly complex. Therefore, to scale-up a spin-based architecture we must change how individual charges are readout and controlled. Here, we demonstrate single-spin occupancy of each dot in a foundry-fabricated array by combining two methods. 1/ Loading a finite number of electrons into the quantum dot array; simplifying electrostatic tuning by isolating the array from the reservoirs. 2/ Deploying multiplex gate-based reflectometry to dispersively probe charge tunneling and spin states without charge sensors or reservoirs. Our isolated arrays probed by embedded multiplex readout can be readily electrostatically tuned. They are thus a viable, scalable approach for spin-based quantum architectures., Comment: 15 pages 5 figures

The extended ultraviolet (XUV) disks of nearby galaxies show ongoing massive star formation, but their parental molecular clouds remain mostly undetected despite searches in CO(1-0) and CO(2-1). The recent detection of 23 clouds in the higher excitation transition CO(3-2) within the XUV disk of M83 requires an explanation. We test the hypothesis: the clouds in XUV disks have a clump-envelope structure similar to those in Galactic star-forming clouds, having star-forming dense clumps (or concentrations of multiple clumps) at their centers, which predominantly contribute to the CO(3-2) emission, surrounded by less-dense envelopes, where CO molecules are photo-dissociated due to the low-metallicity environment there. We utilize new high-resolution ALMA CO(3-2) observations of a subset (11) of the 23 clouds in the XUV disk. We confirm the compactness of the CO(3-2)-emitting dense clumps (or their concentrations), finding clump diameters below the spatial resolution of 6-9~pc. This is similar to the size of the dense gas region in the Orion A molecular cloud, the local star-forming cloud with massive star formation. The dense star-forming clumps are common between normal and XUV disks. This may also indicate that once the cloud structure is set, the process of star formation is governed by the cloud internal physics rather than by external triggers. This simple model explains the current observations of the clouds with ongoing massive star formation, although it may require some adjustment, e.g., including an effect of cloud evolution, for a general scenario of star formation in molecular clouds., Comment: A&A accepted; 15 pages, 8 figures - after proof

We give sufficent conditions for a derivation of a $k$-algebra $A$ of finite type to be $\infty$-integrable in the sense of Hasse-Schmidt, when $A$ is a complete intersection, or when $A$ is reduced and $k$ is a regular ring. As a consequence, we prove that, if in addition $A$ contains a field, then the set of leaps of $A$ is finite along the minimal primes of certain Fitting ideal of $\Omega_{A/k}$.

The H{\alpha} nebular emission line is an optimal tracer for recent star formation in galaxies. With the advent of JWST, this line has recently become observable at z>3 for the first time. We present a catalog of 1013 H{\alpha} emitters at 3.73 obtained based purely on spectroscopic data, robustly tracing galaxy star formation rates (SFRs) beyond the peak of the cosmic star formation history. We compare our results with theoretical predictions from three different simulations and find good agreement at z~4-6. The UV LFs of this spectroscopically-confirmed sample are in good agreement with pre-JWST measurements obtained with photometrically-selected objects. Finally, we derive SFR functions and integrate these to compute the evolution of the cosmic star-formation rate densities across z~4-6, finding values in good agreement with recent UV estimates from Lyman-break galaxies, which imply a continuous decrease in SFR density by a factor of 3x over z~4 to z~6. The shift to electric and hybrid powertrains in vehicular systems has propelled advancements in mobile robotics and autonomous vehicles. This paper examines the sensitivity of key performance metrics in a electrified heavy-duty mobile manipulator (HDMM) driven by electromechanical linear actuators (EMLAs) powered by permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). The study evaluates power delivery, force dynamics, energy consumption, and overall efficiency of the actuation mechanisms. By computing partial derivatives (PD) with respect to the payload mass at the tool center point (TCP), it provides insights into these factors under various loading conditions. This research aids in the appropriate choice or design of EMLAs for HDMM electrification, addressing actuation mechanism selection challenge in vehicular system with mounted manipulator and determines the necessary battery capacity requirements., Comment: This work is submitted to IEEE VTC 2024

This paper presents VARnet, a capable signal processing model for rapid astronomical timeseries analysis. VARnet leverages wavelet decomposition, a novel method of Fourier feature extraction via the Finite-Embedding Fourier Transform (FEFT), and deep learning to detect faint signals in light curves, utilizing the strengths of modern GPUs to achieve sub-millisecond single-source runtime. We apply VARnet to the NEOWISE Single-Exposure Database, which holds nearly 200 billion apparitions over 10.5 years of infrared sources on the entire sky. This paper devises a pipeline in order to extract variable candidates from the NEOWISE data, serving as a proof of concept for both the efficacy of VARnet and methods for an upcoming variability survey over the entirety of the NEOWISE dataset. We implement models and simulations to synthesize unique light curves to train VARnet. In this case, the model achieves an F1 score of $0.91$ over a 4-class classification scheme on a validation set of real variable sources present in the infrared. With $\sim2000$ points per light curve on a GPU with 22GB of VRAM, VARnet produces a per-source processing time of $<53\mu s$. We confirm that our VARnet is sensitive and precise to both known and previously undiscovered variable sources. The global push for sustainability and energy efficiency is driving significant advancements across various industries, including the development of electrified solutions for heavy-duty mobile manipulators (HDMMs). Electromechanical linear actuators (EMLAs), powered by permanent magnet synchronous motors, present an all-electric alternative to traditional internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered hydraulic actuators, offering a promising path toward an eco-friendly future for HDMMs. However, the limited operational range of electrified HDMMs, closely tied to battery capacity, highlights the need to fully exploit the potential of EMLAs that driving the manipulators. This goal is contingent upon a deep understanding of the harmonious interplay between EMLA mechanisms and the dynamic behavior of heavy-duty manipulators. To this end, this paper introduces a bilevel multi-objective optimization framework, conceptualizing the EMLA-actuated manipulator of an electrified HDMM as a leader--follower scenario. At the leader level, the optimization algorithm maximizes EMLA efficiency by considering electrical and mechanical constraints, while the follower level optimizes manipulator motion through a trajectory reference generator that adheres to manipulator limits. This optimization approach ensures that the system operates with a synergistic trade-off between the most efficient operating region of the actuation system, achieving a total efficiency of 70.3\%, and high manipulator performance. Furthermore, to complement this framework and ensure precise tracking of the generated optimal trajectories, a robust, adaptive, subsystem-based control strategy is developed with accurate control and exponential stability. We study the observable spectral and temporal properties of kilonova remnants analytically, and showcase quantitative differences with respect to supernova remnants. We provide detection prospects of kilonova remnants in the context of ongoing radio surveys. We find that there is a good chance to expect 10s of such objects in future surveys with a flux threshold of $\sim 0.1$ mJy. Kilonova remnants from a postulated population of long lived supramassive neutron star remnants of neutron star mergers are even more likely to be detected as they are extremely bright and peak earlier. For ongoing survey with threshold of $\sim$ mJy, we expect to find 10-100s of such objects if they are a significant fraction of total kilonova population. Considering that there are no promising such kilonovae candidates in current surveys, we constrain the fraction of such extreme kilonova to be no more than 30 percent of the overall kilonovae rate, depending on the details of ejecta mass and external density distribution., Comment: Comments welcome

Interest is growing in social learning models where users share opinions and adjust their beliefs in response to others. This paper introduces generalized-bias opinion models, an extension of the DeGroot model, that captures a broader range of cognitive biases. These models can capture, among others, dynamic (changing) influences as well as ingroup favoritism and out-group hostility, a bias where agents may react differently to opinions from members of their own group compared to those from outside. The reactions are formalized as arbitrary functions that depend, not only on opinion difference, but also on the particular opinions of the individuals interacting. Under certain reasonable conditions, all agents (despite their biases) will converge to a consensus if the influence graph is strongly connected, as in the original DeGroot model. The proposed approach combines different biases, providing deeper insights into the mechanics of opinion dynamics and influence within social networks.

We demonstrate the first end-to-end integration of high-performance computing (HPC), reliable quantum computing, and AI in a case study on catalytic reactions producing chiral molecules. We present a hybrid computation workflow to determine the strongly correlated reaction configurations and estimate, for one such configuration, its active site's ground state energy. We combine 1) the use of HPC tools like AutoRXN and AutoCAS to systematically identify the strongly correlated chemistry within a large chemical space with 2) the use of logical qubits in the quantum computing stage to prepare the quantum ground state of the strongly correlated active site, demonstrating the advantage of logical qubits compared to physical qubits, and 3) the use of optimized quantum measurements of the logical qubits with so-called classical shadows to accurately predict various properties of the ground state including energies. The combination of HPC, reliable quantum computing, and AI in this demonstration serves as a proof of principle of how future hybrid chemistry applications will require integration of large-scale quantum computers with classical computing to be able to provide a measurable quantum advantage., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

A critical milestone for quantum computers is to demonstrate fault-tolerant computation that outperforms computation on physical qubits. The tesseract subsystem color code protects four logical qubits in 16 physical qubits, to distance four. Using the tesseract code on Quantinuum's trapped-ion quantum computers, we prepare high-fidelity encoded graph states on up to 12 logical qubits, beneficially combining for the first time fault-tolerant error correction and computation. We also protect encoded states through up to five rounds of error correction. Using performant quantum software and hardware together allows moderate-depth logical quantum circuits to have an order of magnitude less error than the equivalent unencoded circuits., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

We propose different estimators to probe the epoch of reionization (EoR) intergalactic medium (IGM) using the dispersion measure (${\rm DM}$) of the FRBs. We consider three different reionization histories which we can distinguish with a total of $\lesssim 1000$ ${\rm DM}$ measurements during EoR if their redshifts are known. We note that the redshift derivatives of ${\rm DM}$ are also directly sensitive to the reionization history. The major point of this work is exploring the variance in the ${\rm DM}$ measurements and the information encoded in them. We find that the all-sky average $\overline{{\rm DM}}(z)$ gets biased from the LoS fluctuations in the ${\rm DM}$ measurements introduced by the ionization of IGM during EoR. We find that the ratio $\sigma_{\rm DM}/\overline{{\rm DM}}$ depends directly on the ionization bubble sizes as well as the reionization history. On the other hand, we also find that angular variance (coined as $structure$ $function$) of ${\rm DM}$ encodes the information about the duration of reionization and the typical bubble sizes as well. NT experiments have demonstrated core performance on par with positive triangularity (PT) H-mode without edge-localized modes (ELMs), encouraging further study of an NT reactor core. In this work, we use integrated modeling to scope the operating space around two NT reactor strategies: a high-field, compact fusion pilot plant concept and a low field, high aspect ratio concept. By integrating equilibrium, core transport, and edge ballooning instability models, we establish a range of operating points with less than 50 MW scrape-off layer power and fusion power comparable to positive triangularity (PT) H-mode reactor concepts. Heating and seeded impurities are leveraged to accomplish the same fusion performance and scrape-off layer exhaust power for various pressure edge boundary conditions. Scans over these pressure edge conditions accommodate any current uncertainty of the properties of the NT edge and show that the performance of an NT reactor will be extremely dependent on the edge pressure. The high-field case is found to enable lower scrape-off layer power because it is capable of reaching high fusion powers at a relatively compact size, which allows increased separatrix density without exceeding the Greenwald density limit. An increase in fusion power density is seen at weaker NT. Infinite-n ballooning instability models indicate that an NT reactor core can reach fusion powers comparable to leading PT H-mode reactor concepts while remaining ballooning-stable. Seeded krypton is leveraged to further lower scrape-off layer power since NT does not have a requirement to remain in H-mode. We contextualize the NT reactor operating space by comparing to popular PT H-mode reactor concepts, and find that NT exhibits competitive ELM-free performance with these concepts for a variety of edge conditions while maintaining relatively low scrape-off layer power., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures. The first achievement of highly radiating plasmas in negative triangularity is shown with an operational space featuring high core radiation at high Greenwald fraction obtained with the injection of reactor-relevant seeded gases. These negative triangularity (NT) shape diverted discharges reach high values of normalized plasma pressure (BetaN > 2) at high radiation fraction with no ELMs. We demonstrate that as long as the impurity level in the core is kept low to avoid excessive fuel dilution and impurity accumulation, integration of NT configuration with high radiation fraction not only is achievable but it can lead to confinement improvement with stabilization effects originating from collisionality, ExB shear and profiles changes due to impurity radiation cooling. The underlying physics mechanism is robust and holds for a variety of impurity species. The absence of the requirement to stay in H-mode translates in a higher core radiation fraction potentially allowed in NT shape effectively mitigating the power exhaust issue. The results presented here demonstrate a path to high performance, ELM free and highly radiative regime with rector-relevant seeding gases making this regime a potential new scenario for reactor operation.

Quantum metrology offers significant improvements in several quantum technologies. In this work, we propose a Gaussian quantum metrology protocol assisted by initial position-momentum correlations (PM). We employ a correlated Gaussian wave packet as a probe to examine the dynamics of Quantum Fisher Information (QFI) and purity based on PM correlations to demonstrate how to estimate the PM correlations and, more importantly, to unlock its potential applications such as a resource to enhance quantum thermometry. In the low-temperature regime, we find an improvement in the thermometry of the surrounding environment when the original system exhibits a non-null initial correlation (correlated Gaussian state). In addition, we explore the connection between the loss of purity and the gain in QFI during the process of estimating the effective environment coupling and its effective temperature.

We present a method to prepare non-classical states of the electromagnetic field in a microwave resonator. It is based on a controlled gate that applies a squeezing operation on a SQUID-terminated resonator conditioned on the state of a dispersively coupled qubit. This controlled-squeeze gate, when combined with Gaussian operations on the resonator, is universal. We explore the use of this tool to map an arbitrary qubit state into a superposition of squeezed states. In particular, we target a bosonic code with well-defined superparity which makes photon losses detectable by nondemolition parity measurements. We analyze the possibility of implementing this using state-of-the-art circuit QED tools and conclude that it is within reach of current technologies., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures and supplemental material

With security threats increasing in frequency and severity, it is critical that we consider the important role of threat hunters. These highly-trained security professionals learn to see, identify, and intercept security threats. Many recent works and existing tools in cybersecurity are focused on automating the threat hunting process, often overlooking the critical human element. Our study shifts this paradigm by emphasizing a human-centered approach to understanding the lived experiences of threat hunters. By observing threat hunters during hunting sessions and analyzing the rich insights they provide, we seek to advance the understanding of their cognitive processes and the tool support they need. Through an in-depth observational study of threat hunters, we introduce a model of how they build and refine their mental models during threat hunting sessions. We also present 23 themes that provide a foundation to better understand threat hunter needs and five actionable design propositions to enhance the tools that support them. We report the suppression of Type-I Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) in the EAST tokamak under ITER baseline conditions using $n = 4$ Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs), while maintaining energy confinement. Achieving RMP-ELM suppression requires a normalized plasma beta ($\beta_N$) exceeding 1.8 in a target plasma with $q_{95}\approx 3.1$ and tungsten divertors. Quasi-linear modeling shows high plasma beta enhances RMP-driven neoclassical toroidal viscosity torque, reducing field penetration thresholds. We constrain the redshift dependence of (rest frame) host galaxy dispersion measures of localized FRBs by assuming it to vary as a simple power law ($\propto (1+z)^{\alpha}$). We simultaneously fit $\alpha$ as well as the host dispersion measure to the data of FRBs with known redshifts. We find that $\alpha\approx 0$ is preferred over higher values of $\alpha$ with either a positive or negative sign. Such constraints have implications for our understanding of galaxy formation and can be used to inform galaxy and large scale simulations., Comment: Comments welcome

Autonomous driving for urban and highway driving applications often requires High Definition (HD) maps to generate a navigation plan. Nevertheless, various challenges arise when generating and maintaining HD maps at scale. While recent online mapping methods have started to emerge, their performance especially for longer ranges is limited by heavy occlusion in dynamic environments. With these considerations in mind, our work focuses on leveraging lightweight and scalable priors-Standard Definition (SD) maps-in the development of online vectorized HD map representations. We first examine the integration of prototypical rasterized SD map representations into various online mapping architectures. Furthermore, to identify lightweight strategies, we extend the OpenLane-V2 dataset with OpenStreetMaps and evaluate the benefits of graphical SD map representations. A key finding from designing SD map integration components is that SD map encoders are model agnostic and can be quickly adapted to new architectures that utilize bird's eye view (BEV) encoders. Our results show that making use of SD maps as priors for the online mapping task can significantly speed up convergence and boost the performance of the online centerline perception task by 30% (mAP). Furthermore, we show that the introduction of the SD maps leads to a reduction of the number of parameters in the perception and reasoning task by leveraging SD map graphs while improving the overall performance. A plasma scenario with negative triangularity (NT) shaping is achieved on MAST-U for the first time. While edge localized modes (ELMs) are eventually suppressed as the triangularity is decreased below $\delta$ < -0.06, an extended period of H-mode operation with Type-III ELMs is sustained at less negative $\delta$ even through access to the second stability region for ideal ballooning modes is closed. This documents a qualitative difference from the ELM-free access conditions documented in NT scenarios on conventional aspect ratio machines. The electron temperature at the pedestal top drops across the transition to ELM-free operation, but a steady rise in core temperature as $\delta$ is decreased allows for similar normalized beta in the ELM-free NT and H-mode positive triangularity shapes.

Nanographene-based magnetism at interfaces offers an avenue to designer quantum materials towards novel phases of matter and atomic-scale applications. Key to spintronics applications at the nanoscale is bistable spin-crossover which however remains to be demonstrated in nanographenes. Here we show that antiaromatic 1,4-disubstituted pyrazine-embedded nanographene derivatives, which promote magnetism through oxidation to a non-aromatic radical are prototypical models for the study of carbon-based thermal spin-crossover. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy studies reveal symmetric spin excitation signals which evolve at Tc to a zero-energy peak, and are assigned to the transition of a S = 3/2 high-spin to a S = 1/2 low-spin state by density functional theory. At temperatures below and close to the spin-crossover Tc, the high-spin S= 3/2 excitations evidence pronouncedly different temperature-dependent excitation energies corresponding to a zero-field splitting in the Hubbard-Kanamori Hamiltonian. The discovery of thermal spin crossover and temperature-dependent zero-field splitting in carbon nanomaterials promises to accelerate quantum information, spintronics and thermometry at the atomic scale.

Controlling the light emitted by individual molecules is instrumental to a number of novel nanotechnologies ranging from super-resolution bio-imaging and molecular sensing to quantum nanophotonics. Molecular emission can be tailored by modifying the local photonic environment, for example by precisely placing a single molecule inside a plasmonic nanocavity with the help of DNA origami. Here, using this scalable approach, we show that commercial fluorophores experience giant Purcell factors and Lamb shifts, reaching values on par with those recently reported in scanning tip experiments. Engineering of plasmonic modes enables cavity-mediated fluorescence far detuned from the zero-phonon-line (ZPL) - at detunings that are up to two orders of magnitude larger than the fluorescence linewidth of the bare emitter and reach into the near-infrared. Our results evidence a regime where the emission linewidth is dominated by the excited state lifetime, as required for indistinguishable photon emission, baring relevance to the development of nanoscale, ultrafast quantum light sources and to the quest toward single-molecule cavity-QED. The $k$-center problem is a central optimization problem with numerous applications for machine learning, data mining, and communication networks. Despite extensive study in various scenarios, it surprisingly has not been thoroughly explored in the traditional distributed setting, where the communication graph of a network also defines the distance metric. We initiate the study of the $k$-center problem in a setting where the underlying metric is the graph's shortest path metric in three canonical distributed settings: the LOCAL, CONGEST, and CLIQUE models. The recent demonstration of laser excitation of the $\approx 8$ eV isomeric state of thorium-229 is a significant step towards a nuclear clock. The low excitation energy likely results from a cancellation between the contributions of the electromagnetic and strong forces. Physics beyond the Standard Model could disrupt this cancellation, highlighting nuclear clocks' sensitivity to new physics. Accurate predictions of the different contributions to nuclear transition energies, and therefore of the quantitative sensitivity of a nuclear clock, are challenging. We improve upon previous sensitivity estimates and assess a ''nightmare scenario'', where all binding energy differences are small and the new physics sensitivity is poor. A classical geometric model of thorium-229 suggests that fine-tuning is needed for such a scenario. We also propose a $d$-wave halo model, inspired by effective field theory. We show that it reproduces observations and suggests the ''nightmare scenario'' is unlikely. We find that the nuclear clock's sensitivity to variations in the effective fine structure constant is enhanced by a factor of order $10^4$. [Abridged] The relation between nuclear star clusters (NSCs) and the growth of the central SMBHs, as well as their connection to the properties of the host galaxies, is crucial for understanding the evolution of galaxies. Recent observations have revealed that about 10 per cent of nucleated galaxies host hybrid nuclei, consisting of both NSCs and accreting SMBHs that power active galactic nuclei (AGN). Motivated by the potential of the recently published multi-wavelength data sets from LeMMINGs survey, here we present the most thorough investigation to date of the incidence of hybrid nuclei in a large sample of 100 nearby nucleated galaxies (10 E, 25 S0, 63 S, and 2 Irr), covering a wide range in stellar mass ($M_{*,\rm gal} \sim 10^{8.7}-10^{12}~\rm M_{sun}$). We identify the nuclei and derive their properties by performing detailed 1D and 2D multi-component decompositions of the optical and near-infrared $HST$ stellar light distributions of the galaxies using S\'ersic and core-S\'ersic models. Our AGN diagnostics are based on homogeneously derived nuclear 1.5 GHz $e$-MERLIN radio, $Chandra$ X-ray (0.3--10 keV) and optical emission-line data. We determine the nucleation fraction ($f_{\rm nuc} $) as the relative incidence of nuclei across the LeMMINGs $HST$ sample and find $f_{\rm nuc} =~ $100/149 (= 67 $\pm$ 7 per cent), confirming previous work, with a peak value of 49/56~(= $88 \pm 13$ per cent) at bulge masses $M_{*,\rm bulge} \sim 10^{9.4}$- $10^{10.8}~\rm M_{sun}$. We identify 30 nucleated LeMMINGs galaxies that are optically active, radio-detected and X-ray luminous ($L_{X} > 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$). This indicates that our nucleated sample has a lower limit $\sim$ 30 per cent occupancy of hybrid nuclei, which is a function of $M_{*,\rm bulge}$ and $M_{*,\rm gal}$. We present a simplified model consisting on two linear elliptic boundary-value problems that represent a single step and single fixed-point iteration in an electrochemical battery model. The main variables are the concentration and the electric potential, whose equation is assigned a Robin BC with a very important physical interpretation. The solvability of both equations is studied in different funcional settings, to finally prove the well-posedness of a broken mixed variational formulation. The latter formulation opens the opportunity of performing discretization and numerical solution via the Discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin (DPG) method, which guarantees discrete stability thanks to optimal test functions. With only the usual assumptions on the data and the discretization, we show that the method herein proposed is convergent. This analytical effort complements other recent works on batttery multiphysics, that have been more modeling and computing oriented, and establishes the DPG approach as a valuable tool to contribute toward an efficient analysis and design of batteries., Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure.
